Cellphone restrictions in schools take effect as part of actions to keep kids safe, healthy

Cellphones and other digital devices will be restricted in B.C. schools when students return to school next week as part of a series of actions to keep kids safe and healthy.

“Every child in British Columbia should feel safe, supported and engaged when they head back to school next week,” said Premier David Eby. “Our government is ensuring students can reach their full potential by restricting cellphones in classrooms, keeping harassing protestors away from school grounds, and making sure kids are fed and ready to learn.”

All school districts now have policies in place to restrict cellphone use at school. These policies address when students can use cellphones at school, while also considering the use of devices for accessibility and medical needs. Policies may differ between school districts and age groups.

“We want to ensure that when kids are in the classroom, they can learn without distractions that take away from their ability to thrive in school,” said Rachna Singh, Minister of Education and Child Care. “This work will help to minimize some of those distractions so we can set students up for success, and we can then focus on empowering students to develop safe, informed, healthy habits when using technology and social media.”

This action is part of a larger effort to keep kids safe and healthy, including:

protecting children from online predators and extortion;

protecting students and staff from harassing protesters through the implementation of access zones around schools;

creating and expanding school food programs through a $214-million investment; and

beginning work this school year to make cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) learning mandatory for all students prior to graduation –90% of public secondary schools already offer CPR learning.

The Safe Access to Schools Act gives the Province the legal authority to prohibit people from interfering with safe access to school grounds. Access zones are in place at K-12 schools, and police can arrest or issue tickets to anyone found impeding access, disrupting or interfering with educational activities, or attempting to intimidate an individual within 20 metres (66 feet) of school property. The zones will be in effect on school days from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m., and during extracurricular school activities at all of B.C.’s K-12 public and independent schools, with limited exceptions.

The Province is also providing digital literacy training for students and parents, so they have the knowledge and tools they need to stay safe from online harms, become good digital citizens and develop healthy relationships with technology.

Public accounts show B.C. put people first amid wildfires, global challenges

The Province supported people through a record wildfire season and a global economic slowdown in 2023-24, while continuing to build the schools, hospitals and homes people need.

“With British Columbians continuing to face challenges amidst high inflation, a growing population and climate emergencies, we remained focused on supporting people and the services they count on,” said Katrine Conroy, Minister of Finance. “Record wildfire costs and the impacts of slower growth added to challenges, but B.C. was an economic leader in Canada, and we have continued to build a stronger, more secure B.C. for everyone.”

Public accounts show B.C. ended the year with a deficit of $5.035 billion, lower than more recent forecasts,

but $819 million higher than Budget 2023 due to increased emergency spending, lower natural-resource revenues, and increased support for priority services, including health care, education and housing as B.C.’s population continued to see record growth.

B.C. had higher-than-expected revenue from most sources, offset by reduced revenues from the naturalresource sector amid lower prices.

Expenses were higher than Budget 2023 to support priority services and respond to climate emergencies. The Province spent $1.1 billion on fire management – the highest year on record – and $401 million more than budget under the Emergency and Disaster Management Act in response to flooding and other events.

To support a growing population and build an economy that works better for people, the government focused on building the infrastructure communities need, including hospitals, schools, homes, transit and roads.

The Future Ready Action Plan was launched to provide people with the skills they need to get good-paying jobs.

“Some say we should respond to challenges by making deep cuts to services and leaving people to fend for themselves, but that’s the wrong approach,” Conroy said. “With a slower world economy and a growing population, we cannot afford to have a deficit of services. When we provide the services and support people need to build a good life, it makes our economy stronger and more resilient.”

At 1.6%, B.C.’s 2023 economic growth outpaced the national average. B.C. continues to have one of the best credit ratings and one of the lowest debt-to-GDP ratios among provinces.

Faced with an economic slowdown and a need to respond to climate and weather emergencies, taxpayersupport debt increased by $15.514 billion from 2022-23 to ensure programs could support people in the province through the year and into the future as B.C.’s population grows.

Public accounts for the previous fiscal year are part of ensuring transparency and accountability within government’s finances. The next report on provincial finances will be the first quarterly to be released in September.

1 September: First Prakash of Adi Granth Sahib

Today is the Guru Granth Sahib's first prakash purab (illumination day). On this day in 1604, the Guru Granth Sahib was inaugurated and ceremoniously opened within the revered Harimandar Sahib in Amritsar. It took the form of the Adi Granth Sahib.

Throughout the lineage of the Gurus, the Sikh community upheld a robust tradition of scribal practices. This tradition's significance is evident from secondary sources such as the writings of Bhai Gurdas ji. Bhai Gurdas ji references a book (kitab) that Guru Nanak Sahib carried during his udasis (travels). This strong scribal heritage was pivotal in safeguarding the Sabad, the Divine revelation, and disseminating

it across distant regions as the Sikh panth expanded.

The Janamsakhi, a tradition of biographical narratives about Guru Nanak Sahib, informs us that the Guru would sing Sabads to congregations of Sikhdevotees. Certain dedicated Sikhs would then transcribe these Sabads. Guru Nanak Sahib often asked Guru Angad Sahib to write down the Sabads he had revealed. This established a tradition of preserving and transmitting the revealed Bani to successive Gurus.

Ultimately, under the supervision of Guru Arjan Sahib, the compositions of previous Gurus, Bhagats, and Sikhs were compiled into

the Adi Granth Sahib, with the scribing overseen by Bhai Gurdas ji. On Guru Arjan Sahib's instruction, Baba Buddha ji inaugurated the Granth Sahib and shared its first Command (hukam). This marked a significant milestone in the Sikhcommunity's evolution, signaling its definitive journey towards embracing the Guruship of the Sabad as its guiding principle.

Later, Guru Gobind Singh Sahib prepared the current recension of

the Guru Granth Sahib by adding the composition of Guru Teghbahadar Sahib to the Adi Granth Sahib and conferring Guruship upon it in 1708. To this day, the SikhPanth holds the sweet profound utterances of the Guru.

What is Sikhism

The word ‘Sikh’ means a ‘disciple’. A Sikh is a person who believes in One God and teachings of the Ten Gurus, enshrined in the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh Holy Book. Additionally, he or she must take Amrit, the Sikh Baptism.

Brief History

The Sikh religion was founded by Guru Nanak, who was born in 1469 AD in the village Talwandi, now called ‘Nankana Sahib’ near Lahore (Pakistan). Right from his childhood his keen mind would not accept all the groundless rituals, superstitions and dogmas which passed for religion in those days. Guru Nanak and the nine Gurus who succeeded him, set a wonderful example of living spiritually, while yet taking an active and secular part in the world. The tenth and the last Guru, Guru Gobind Singh (1666-1708 AD) initiated the Sikh Baptism ceremony in 1699 AD; and thus gave a distinctive identity to the Sikhs.

The first Five Baptised Sikhs were named Panj Pyare (Five Beloved Ones), who in turn baptised the Guru on his request--an event hither to unknown in the history. Shortly before passing away the Guru ordained that Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh Holy Scripture would be the ultimate spiritual authority for the Sikhs and the temporal authority would vest in the Khalsa panth-- The Sikh Commonwealth. Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh Holy scripture was compiled and edited by the fifth Guru, Guru Arjan Dev in 1604 AD. This is the only scripture in the world which has been compiled by the founders of a faith during their own lifetime. Guru Arjan also built the world famous Gurdwara--Darbar Sahib, at Amritsar which is nucleus of Sikhism.

During the eighteenth century the Sikhs were subjected to various suppressions and persecutions by the authorities of the time motivated by communal fanaticism. They had to make supreme sacrifices to protect and preserve their faith and separate entity. The Mughal Empire was on the verge of disintegration: The Afghans had started invading the country under Ahmed Shah Abdali. The Sikhs availed of this opportunity to establish their own kingdom which they ultimately achieved under Maharaja Ranjit Singh (1780-1839 AD). The Sikh Empire lasted for half a century and was annexed by the English in 1849 AD During the freedom struggle of India a large number of Sikhs kissed the hangman’s noose, faced all the brutalities and braved the bullets and suffered long term imprisonments in order to liberate the country. Although the Sikhs constitute only 1.8 percent of India’s population, yet they have made a name for themselves in almost all walks of life such as armed forces, agriculture, sports, industry, education, medicine and engineering etc. through sheer dint or hard work and with a missionary dedication. Their adventurist and enterprising nature has taken them to almost all countries of the world.

Religion and Philosophy

The Sikh religion is strictly monotheistic, believing in One Supreme God, Absolute yet Ali-pervading, the Eternal, the Creator, the Cause of Causes, without enmity, without hate, both immanent in His creation and beyond it. It is no longer the God of one nation, but the GOD OF GRACE. That being so, He creates man not to punish him for his sins, but for the realisation of his true purpose in the cosmos and to merge in from where he issued forth.

‘O my mind, thou art the embodiment of Light; know thy Essence’ O my mind, the Lord is ever with thee; through the Gurus Word enjoy His Love; Knowing thy essence thou knowing essence thou knowest thy Lord; and knowest thou the mystery of birth and death.’

(Guru Granth P-441)

The basic postulate of Sikhism is that life is not sinful in its origin, but having emanated from a pure Source, the True One abides in it. Thus sayeth Nanak:

‘O my mind, thou art the spark of the Supreme Light; know thy essence’

Not the only whole of Sikh philosophy, but the whole of Sikh history and character, flows from ‘this principle’.

Don’t be afraid of budgeting: Your financial costume for success

As Halloween approaches, many of us embrace the season’s playful spirit. Amidst the celebrations, it’s easy to overlook a crucial aspect of our lives: our finances. Embracing budgeting, much like wearing a clever costume, can transform your financial outlook. Budgeting will also help you achieve your long-term goals. Here’s how to get started; spooky surprises not included.

Why budgeting matters

Budgeting helps you set spending limits, reduce expenses, save money and live within your means. It gives you control over your finances and offers more resources for what truly matters.

Planning your financial goals

Reflect on your financial goals before diving into budgeting. Goals can be shortterm and long-term. To prevent financial stress, consider establishing an emergency fund to cover 3 to 6 months of living expenses.

Tracking your money

Understand where your money goes by tracking your spending for a month. Categorize expenses into “needs” and “wants” to see where adjustments can be made.

Small changes can significantly impact your budget over time.

Creating your budget

The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada has a free online budget planner tool you can use to input your income, savings and expenses, providing insights to help balance your budget. It also compares your spending with averages and provides personalized tips to enhance your financial management.

Review and adjust

Once your budget is set, stick to it and refine as necessary. Keep track of receipts, update your budget with any financial changes and regularly compare your budget to actual spending. This ensures you stay on track and adjust for unexpected expenses or changes in income.

Enjoy the process

Embracing budgeting doesn’t have to be a trick, it can be a treat. Just like selecting a costume that suits your personality, finding a budgeting approach that fits your lifestyle makes the process enjoyable. A well-planned budget can be your most valuable asset, helping you save for the future and manage your finances with confidence.

South Asian Community in Canada at Crossroads

The South Asian community in Canada, due to its high profile, usually comes under a microscope from time to time. There are several reasons for it. There is no doubt that since its arrival in Canada more than 130 years ago, it has gone through numerous ups and downs. Our pioneers struggled hard to establish themselves here in Canada. Losing the right to vote in 1907, the racial riots at the turn of the 20th century, the Komagata Maru (aka Guru Nanak Jahaz) tragedy of 1914, restrictive and race based/discriminatory immigration policy are some of the dark chapters in Canadian history relating to our community. Despite these obstacles and hardships our pioneers did not give up but with their determination and hard work made a very respectable place for our community in Canadian society. Their resilience, persistence, sacrifices and struggles paved the way for the younger generations to succeed and excel. The fruits of their labour are now visible throughout Canada.

Today, one of our languages- Punjabihas become the third most spoken language in Canada. Members of our community are occupying prominent positions in every area and at every level. They are excelling in every area, be it business, industry, technology, sports, politics, media or what not. This is a great credit to the dedication, hard work and resilience of the members of our community. A vast majority of South Asians are hard working and law-abiding citizens. They have been making a commendable contribution to Canada. Unfortunately, there is a very small segment of our community that is tarnishing its hard-earned image.

Our radio talk shows and media reports indicate that during the past few years, like many other communities, our community has now also been plagued by a lot of unsavoury characters who are a disgrace to any community. Some of these shady characters have only one main objective in mind. That is to make money by hook or by crook. It is very disheartening to hear and

read about incidents of gangs, fighting, violence, extortions, tax evasion, fraud, abuse and misuse of laws of Canada. Only a few shady characters in the community are giving a bad name to the entire community. Consequently, during the past few years such negative activities have severely tarnished our community’s image. To reverse this trend, we need to put pressure on the provincial and federal governments. Both levels of government have the responsibility and obligation to take appropriate action to rectify the situation. In addition to that, In order to change this narrative, each one of us -individually and collectively-needs to get actively involved in this process. It is not an easy task. However, it must be done.

Let us not forget that Canada is a very open, welcoming, inclusive, multicultural and compassionate country. It welcomes people from around the globe. Incidentally, Canada was the first western country in the world to adopt the Multiculturalism Act. Our

constitution protects our basic rights. As a matter of fact, Canada is one of the most desirable countries to live in. Every year it welcomes hundreds of thousands of newcomers as international students, temporary foreign workers, refugees, permanent residents and others.

As such, as residents of Canada, no matter under what category we came here, we have the responsibility and an obligation not only to respect and abide by Canadian laws and values but also promote them. Let us not forget that, except the Aboriginal communities, whether we are here for generations or have just arrived, we are all immigrants to this country. As such, we have an obligation and responsibility to respect and obey Canadian laws. Canada did not force us to come here. All of us have come here on our own free will to better ourselves. So rather than engaging in inappropriate activities and behaviour, we should make this country proud of ourselves.

Use caution, be fire safe this long weekend

People are urged to continue to use caution and remain vigilant to prevent human-caused fires when enjoying the outdoors this Labour Day long weekend.

Although some areas have benefited from recent rain, much of the province is experiencing above-normal drought conditions. Residents and travellers should continue to use caution and take steps to reduce the risk of wildfire by staying up to date on current conditions, following fire bans and restrictions, and having an emergency plan that is shared with friends and family. The most up-to-date information on wildfire activity in B.C. can be found here: https://WildfireSituation.nrs.gov. bc.ca/dashboard

While the BC Wildfire Service has lifted its campfire bans, people

should check with local governments, First Nations and other authorities, such as BC Parks, to see if any burning restrictions or bylaws are in effect.

People planning to have campfires should do so safely. Avoid having a campfire when it's windy, choose a proper fire pit or make a ring of rocks at least three metres from trees, shrubs, structures and debris, and do not leave a campfire unattended for any amount of time.

People are encouraged to safely explore British Columbia. As conditions can change quickly, people who are travelling should check ahead for road closures, evacuation alerts, evacuation orders and other prohibitions such as BC Parks closures. Please follow all instructions from local governments or First Na-

tions. For more information about emergencies or road closures in the province, please check https:// EmergencyInfoBC.ca and https:// DriveBC.ca before you travel.

The BC Wildfire Service relies on members of the public to report wildfires and thanks the public for its ongoing help in reporting wildfires quickly. Approximately 40% of new fires are first reported by the public. Reporting wildfires or dangerous activities that might cause wildfires is a way people can help keep everyone safe. The sooner a wildfire is reported, the sooner a response can begin.

To report a wildfire, unattended campfire or an open-burning violation, call 1 800 663-5555 toll-free or *5555 on a cellphone or download the BC Wildfire Service app.

The newly improved BC Wildfire Service mobile app allows people to check the current wildfire situation, road conditions, and weather forecasts. Users can also report new wildfires and submit photos, which helps inform BC Wildfire Service operational decision-making.

Additional precautions:

Anyone riding an all-terrain vehicle on or within 300 metres of forested land or rangeland must have a spark arrestor installed on the vehicle.

To help reduce wildfire risks, check the condition of the muffler, regularly clear buildups of grass or other vegetation from hot spots, stay on dirt paths and avoid tall grass and weeds.

Dispose of smoking materials responsibly, ensuring they are completely extinguished.

More certified teachers coming to B.C. schools

Recruitment and training initiatives are underway for the coming school year to get more certified teachers into B.C. classrooms and build B.C.’s K-12 workforce.

“We know that the record numbers of newcomers moving to B.C each year means we need more teaching staff in schools,” said Rachna Singh, Minister of Education and Child Care. “We’re actively working with our education partners on K-12 workforce initiatives to support the recruitment and retention of more certified teachers and build a sustainable education workforce for years to come.”

Through the Province’s StrongerBC: Future Ready Action Plan, $12.5 million over three years is supporting provincewide recruitment and training initiatives for teachers. This year, almost $4 million is going toward recruitment and training programs, with a focus on supporting teacher retention in the sector, improving flexibility in teacher education programs, and recruiting more teachers in rural and remote communities.

“Training the next generation of certified teachers is an important part of our Future Ready Action Plan,” said Lisa Beare, Minister of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills. “Building flexibility in education programs supports more people in choosing teaching as a career and helps to fill in-demand positions, providing goodpaying jobs for British Columbians.”

A provincial hiring incentive that brought 50 new certified teachers to rural and remote schools in 2023 is on track to hire almost 60 more teachers for the coming school year. Supported through $1.5 million in provincial funding over three years, this program provides cash incentives of as much as $10,000 for teachers to work in areas with the highest need. This initiative has supported hiring needs in several remote communities in B.C., including northern B.C., Vancouver Island and the Thompson-Okanagan region.

“When looking at opportunities this spring, a position with Peace River North District stood out for a number of reasons,” said Kylee Campbell, primary teacher, Upper

Halfway Elementary school. “I wanted something in a rural setting where people know each other better and I can personalize my instruction for each student. Working in such a remote setting does have challenges that the generous incentives offered by the Province helps to offset.”

Since 2023, certification standards were updated so that more internationally trained educators could work in B.C.’s classrooms, with the application fee reduced from $395 to $245. These initiatives have helped to double the number of international teacher applications over the past year, setting record application levels to become part of B.C.’s future K-12 workforce. The Province also provides $100,000 in scholarships each year to high school students in B.C. who want to pursue teaching as a career, with the goal of growing the number of local educators in B.C. schools.

With B.C.’s continued enrolment growth, these are just some of the workforce initiatives underway to support recruitment and retention in the K-12 sector. The Province is continuing to work closely with education partners to explore more ways to build a sustainable and skilled K-12 workforce in B.C.

Other provincial initiatives underway include:

In partnership with the First Nation Education Steering Committee, a research project was conducted in 2024 to hear directly from First Nations teachers about their experiences working in the sector and better understand school districts’ humanresources practices to attract, recruit and retain First Nations teachers.

As part of the Province’s commitment to build a sustainable and engaged K-12 workforce, the ministry will support the implementation of a new provincewide teacher mentorship program with several K-12 education partners, including the BC Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) and the BC Principals’ & Vice-Principals’ Association (BCPVPA). Under a new program in 2024, $8,000 will be given to more than 30 student teachers to complete their practi-

Outstanding individuals honoured with Coronation Medal

The King Charles III Coronation Medal was awarded to outstanding individuals in British Columbia during a ceremony with the lieutenant governor.

The Coronation Medal was created to mark the coronation of His Majesty King Charles III, which took place on May 6, 2023. It is the first Canadian commemorative medal to mark a coronation.

Recipients represent a diverse group of individuals who have made significant contributions to British Columbia or to a particular region or community in the province or attained an outstanding achievement abroad that brings credit to B.C.

“I extend my sincere congratulations to the recipients of The King Charles III Coronation Medal,” said Premier David Eby. “This distinguished honour recognizes your dedication, unwavering commitment and the profound impact you have made on your communities and our province. It is a testa-

cum in a northern B.C. school this year.

These awards will be offered to students relocating to rural communities, such as Haida Gwaii, Peace River South, CaribooChilcotin and Nechako Lakes, helping to support northern school districts, while building partnerships with teacher education programs for the future.

The Province is investing $800,000 to make teacher education programs more flexible for students who want to become certified teachers:

UBC’s Rural and Remote Teacher Education Program supported 24 students in 2022, who live and work in a rural or

ment to the respect and admiration you have earned.”

The Government of B.C. is presenting 551 medals. All members of the legislative assembly and cabinet ministers were invited to participate in awarding the medals, ensuring they reach as many deserving people in the province as possible. Ceremonies are being held throughout the province.

Quick Facts:

The Office of the Secretary to the Governor General is responsible for administering The King Charles III Coronation Medal program.

The medal will be awarded to 30,000 deserving individuals across the country.

Nominating partners include provincial lieutenant governors and territorial commissioners, provincial and territorial governments, members of Parliament, senators, the Canadian Armed Forces, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and several other organizations.

remote areas to become certified teachers without having to move to a new community to attend university. With $300,000 in provincial funding, a second student cohort has been created through this program that will support 43 more students to become certified teachers by 2026.

As part of the provincial K-12 workforce plan, the Province is providing $500,000 over two years to increase the availability of hybrid and online-learning options so more people in B.C, including those in remote areas, can better access teacher education programs to become certified teachers in their communities.

Summer Soirée at Salon Picasso Helped to Raise Funds for Renal Ultrasound at Abbotsford Regional Hospital

In a show of community spirit Salon Picasso welcomed members of the public to a Summer Soirée on Wednesday, August 21, 2024. Organised by Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation, the salon’s owner Rada Sidhu hosted the event which drew in community

members eager to contribute to a cause close to home.

The event was a lively affair which helped to raise funds for a much needed ultrasound to help kidney patients in the Renal Department at Abbotsford Regional Hospital.

Kidney Disease affects more than 4 million Canadians and yet there is so much more we can do to understand the systemic disease. According to Dr. Jassal, donor relations, “a kidney ultrasound uses sound waves to diagnose if there is damage to the kidney--vital organ that helps eliminate waste and extra fluid from the body. The renal

ultrasound will definitely be a great asset to our care teams helping our patients”.

As a community we have the power to help create change for patients-incare and at this time there are still more funds needed to purchase the renal ultrasound. If you would like to show your support in helping us fund this vital piece of equipment please visit fvhcf.ca

The Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation raises funds for vital equipment and programs funded or endorsed by the Fraser Health Authority. They serve the communities of Abbotsford,

Mission, Chilliwack, Hope, Agassiz and Harrison Hot Springs.

It might seem time is suddenly running out to work on getting matters that need to be dealt with on a regular basis in better order, as you had intended. Distractions of late can start to settle down in one way but social activity and more interaction with others will start to pick up. This is why it is important to get to and do things now.

Determination to do things your own way can bring a fighting spirit to the surface mainly because of what you want to accomplish in the long term. Something you were either not that clear about from mid August, which might also have included agreements that couldn’t be reached, will now move forward to mid September.

You will be able to move on successfully with something you initially planned or attempted to put into place from mid August. Don’t worry about the end result but rather make a decision to move forward and you could be surprised with what suddenly presents itself. Endings can result in greater harmony with daily routines.

A conversation you didn’t expect to have could take your mind in an interesting direction of wondering about future possibilities that seem unreal in some way. It can change the whole structure of your life. This is something you need to take your time to weigh up to late September. More questions will rise in your mind.

You can now go ahead and make final decisions to 9th September on something you might have attempted since mid August. Part of this could be realising that there is no point in trying to work out a mysterious position that somebody else might want to take. Someone who says it as it is will be the one to give you peace of mind.

Venus, your ruling planet will move into your sign this week where it will remain until 23rd September. This change can decidedly increase your determination to generate happiness and balance on a personal level. You can also move ahead to early September with priorities you may have been reconsidering since mid August.

There is benefit in keeping your own goals in mind, even if this requires some sort of rebellion on your part. Responding to others wanting you to be guilty and back off, is not the way to go. You might need to keep thoughts to yourself for now but with any contemplation you will start to move forward from now to 9th September.

The sudden realisation that somebody else will set out to please themselves can now place you in a situation where you need to find time to yourself to weigh things up and decide how best to structure your life. Commitments can come into this. You are in a better position to move forward with decisions to early September.

You could have a frank discussion with somebody else when it comes to their ideas or decisions they want to make and how this ties in with what are important priorities to you. This may have held you back from being able to think about future goals clearly since mid August but now to early September you can move forward.

An unexpected change in the attitude of somebody else could suddenly bring things out into the open. Where it may have been difficult to get an answer from them since mid August, they could now become straightforward with what they have to say or decide to early September. This is more likely to be to your benefit.

Any difficulty to ascertain what someone else has expected since mid August could begin to change direction to early September, though you would need to pay careful attention. Primarily you need to remain focussed to late September on the level of commitment you feel comfortable about dealing with, combined with usual routines in life.

If it is difficult to work out the position somebody else is taking, now is the time to ask in a straightforward manner, even if this is not the way things are normally done. Their tendency will be to become more secretive to late September. If there are details that you want to move forward with, now to early September will make this possible.

Elevate game day: The ultimate hockey parent picnic

As the leaves turn and the air chills, families across Canada return to the rinks, cheering on their young hockey players. Hours in the cold stands can make mealtime a challenge, often leaving parents to settle for the typical concession fare of hamburgers and lukewarm coffee. Let’s transform this experience this season with a hockey rink picnic that brings warmth and gourmet flair to game day.

Transforming the rink into an elevated picnic experience: Imagine trading the usual fast food for a spread that matches the excitement on the ice. Start by setting the scene with a picnic blanket in the team’s colors, creating a cozy and spirited base for your meal. Equip yourself with reusable utensils, napkins and hand sanitizer to keep things clean and green. This setup isn’t just for hockey parents – swimming, dance and all extracurricular supporters can adopt this stylish approach to sideline snacking.

Gourmet picnic menu: Elevate your game day with a menu that’s both delicious and nutritious. Begin with a selection of Grana Padano PDO (protected designation of origin) cheese, assorted crackers and fresh fruits for a simple yet sophisticated starter. Then, delight in caprese sandwiches layered with succulent Prosciutto di Parma PDO, a perfect match for the crisp autumn weather. For something heartier, bring a grilled garden vegetable salad, topped with shavings of Grana Padano (so you

use less salt in the dressing) and adorned with slices of Prosciutto di Parma. Keep a thermos filled with warm soup, freshly brewed tea or coffee to fend off the rink’s chill. And for a festive touch, pack some beverages or mocktails in reusable bottles, ensuring everyone stays hydrated and happy.

This reimagined hockey parent picnic enhances the game-day experience and fosters a sense of community and celebration around our children’s activities. It’s about more than just watching the game; it’s about creating memorable moments together.

Shopping Tip: If you’re looking for authentic European products (such as Prosciutto di Parma and Grana Padano cheese), look for stamps with a PDO label. The European PDO designation stands for “protected designation of origin,” meaning that it is authentic and produced in the region of origin.

Mushrooms: A surprisingly sustainable and versatile ingredient

Behold the humble mushroom. While most of us probably think of them as a tasty ingredient to add to soups, pizzas and veggie platters, mushrooms are both a versatile and sustainable foodstuff.

They’re water-friendly

While mushrooms themselves are mostly water, they require a lot less water to grow than many other foods we eat. It takes about 6.8 litres (1.8 gallons) to grow 0.5 kg (1 lb.) of mushrooms. Many of the other common vegetables that you find in your local supermarket can require an average of 17.6 litres (4.65 gallons) of water per pound of food and some animal proteins can tip the scales at an average

of 1,180 litres (312 gallons) to produce a pound of protein.

They’re local

Mushrooms are grown by Canadian producers year-round, from coast to coast. When you buy from local growers, you reduce the carbon footprint needed to get the food from farm to table. The mushrooms themselves also have a small carbon footprint of 0.5 kg of carbon dioxide per pound (0.5 kg) of food.

They don’t need a lot of room

It takes very little space to grow a lot of mushrooms. With just 0.4 hectares (1 acre) of space, you can grow up to

Strawberry and Cajun Chicken Salad

Prep time: 20 minutes

Cook time: 15 minutes

Makes: 2 servings

Ingredients:

1 pint (400 g) strawberries

1/2 bunch chopped basil

1/2 bunch chopped mint

3 tbsp (45 ml) honey

2 tsp (10 ml) black pepper

1 tbsp (15 ml) salt

1 tbsp (15 ml) Dijon mustard

2 tbsp (45 ml) white wine vinegar

1/4 cup (60 ml) olive oil

10 cherry tomatoes

1 red onion

2 cobs corn

2 tbsp (30 ml) vegetable oil

3 tbsp (45 ml) sliced almonds

1 chicken breast

2 tbsp (30 ml) Cajun spice

2 cups (500 ml) spinach

2 cups (500 ml) arugula

1/4 cup (60 ml) feta cheese – crumbled

Directions:

Trim and slice all strawberries.

Marinate two-thirds of the strawberries with chopped basil, mint, 1 tbsp (15 ml)

450,000 kg (1 million lbs.) of mushrooms.

They’re energy-efficient

Growing mushrooms requires very little energy. In fact, you can grow one pound of mushrooms using just 1 kWh of electricity. That’s the same amount of energy needed to run a 100-watt lightbulb for 10 hours.

f honey and a pinch of black pepper. Mix well and set aside to allow to marinate.

For the dressing, add Dijon mustard, white wine vinegar, and the remaining honey and strawberries to a blender. Blend on high while slowly pouring in olive oil. Finish this with a pinch of salt.

Slice your tomatoes and red onions, and remove the corn from the cob.

In a small pan on medium heat, add vegetable oil and toast corn kernels until slightly charred. Once cooked, remove from pan and allow to cool.

In that same pan, add almonds and cook on medium heat until they begin to toast and turn golden brown.

Butterfly the chicken breast (i.e. slice most of the way through the breast and fold it open so that it resembles a butterfly) and season both sides with Cajun spice.

In a cast iron pan or heavy-bottomed pan set on medium-high heat, sear chicken breast on both sides. You want the chicken to be charred and cooked to an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) (approx. 4-5 minutes per side).

Once cooked, remove from pan. Allow to rest for 2-3 minutes and then slice thinly.

For assembly, add spinach and arugula to a bowl. Then top with red onions, tomatoes, corn and the marinated strawberries. Next, drizzle a healthy amount of the dressing over top of the salad. Then finish with toasted almonds, crumbled feta and sliced Cajun chicken.

They’re a diverse, versatile ingredient

With dozens of varieties to choose from, including white, crimini, portabella, shiitake, oyster and king oyster, fresh mushrooms can be consumed raw or cooked, and used in an almost endless variety of recipes including soups, stews, pasta, stir-fries and salads.

2024 Hyundai Santa Fe Review: Bolder, Premium design design

The 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe has been redesigned to be a spacious, smooth, and distinct midsize midsize SUV. Now in its fifth generation it

has a completely new look. Square and bolder it looks almost Land Rover like in its premium looks and presence. There is a clever use of the “H ” motif in the shape of the head- and tail lights, and the bodycoloured trim bar across the lower fascia, its not at all gimmicky and looks cool actually. The interior is premium looking, impressive and contemporary, and three rows of seating is standard except on the Calligraphy trim. The handy grab handle hidden in the C-pillar makes accessing the available roof rails and optional accessories such has skior bike racks and even a rooftop tent easy.

There is a choice of either gasoline or hybrid powered models. We tested the Hybrid version powered by a 1.6L four-cylinder hybrid setup, with

231 hp and 271 lb-ft of torque. The XRT and Ultimate Calligraphy trims are powered by a turbocharged 2.5L engine paired with an eightspeed dual-clutch automatic transmission compared to the hybrid's sixspeed conventional gearbox. The XRT has a top towing capacity of 4,500 pounds The other gas models can tow up to 3,500 lb. when properly equipped, while the hybrids have a maximum towing capacity of 2,000 pounds.

In terms of equipment, the standard spec is goods as it always is

Hyundai, there is a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster in a slick looking a curved glass panel dash with an integrated touchscreen infotainment system. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on every model. A separate 6.6-inch touchscreen provides access to the climate controls. Two wireless smartphone charging pads and various

USB-C ports abound along with an available UV-C sterilization tray to help kill germs on passengers' phones, wallets, and other personal items!

Base prices for the Sant Fe start at $40,999 for the Preferred rim, XRT: from $46,999. The Luxury: $49,999 and the Ultimate Calligraphy at $53,499 The base model already includes many standard features as well as a digital key featured in other Hyundai vehicles that allows access to the SUV via a smartphone or smartwatch.

The Santa Fe Hybrid's interior is above anything else in its class I would

say. Ther is premium design ethos, and high quality evident everywhere. Hyundai has used ecofriendly materials throughout the Santa Fe Hybrid's cabin, including sustainable leather upholstery suede

stitched leather on the doors, dash, and center armrest. There are some

“H” and horizontal design elements, All three rows– have more headroom than any vehicle in this segment the second row with its stadium-style seating and even with the optional panoramic moonroof, the third row is accessed thanks be sliding for ward the second-row seat

and folding the seatback. The Santa Fe has 413 litres of cargo space behind the third seat row . Fold down 50-50 split third-row seats and this increases to 1,148 L of space.

Safety -wise, the Santa Fe arrives as standard with a host of driverassistance features and optional advanced tech, including an adaptive cruise control system with a lanecentering feature.

We tested the 1.6L turbo hybrid version with 232 hp, 271 lb-ft).The Santa Fe feels confident and capable, with a natural effort to the steering and some welcomed feedback when cornering. Body roll is restrained in common driving scenarios, though noticeable when charging hard into a

corner The hybrid is a tad slower than the gas engined model thanks to

being heavier. Canadian Santa Fes get off-road drive modes in addition to the three drive modes Sport, Eco and Custom, so drivers can select from Snow, Mud and Sand. The steering is light and the brakes firm with good modulation.

In terms of fuel economy, the hybrid models are rated at an average of 6.9 L/100 km (6.8 city, 6.9 highway) The non-hybrid trims have a combined fuel rating of 10.6 L/100 km (12.1 city, 8.8 highway), with the

XRT trim rated a bit higher at 10.8 L/100 km (12.2 city, 9.1 highway).

Down sides are few, note the hybrid powertrain is only available in the two entry level trims not the XRT and Calligraphy. And a PHEV version

is around but not making its way to Canada at this time. This new bolder Santa Fe continues to offer a lot of features and value for the dollar, as it

has always done, but now it also delivers a boulder , more exciting design, and a premium interior. An excellent buy in this sector – you won’t be disappointed!

He leaves behind his wife, Grace, his son Aman (Keena), his daughter Anita (Shawn), and his grandchildren, Sovaia, Asher, Isaac, Liam, and Noah. He also leaves behind four brothers, two sisters, many nieces and nephews, and numerous cousins, inlaws, and dear family friends.

Amidst all the pain and heartache of losing him, we continue to draw strength from his teachings, learning more about who he was as a human being and an individual. We now better understand the core values and beliefs that drove him to become the inspirational treasure he was in life—what he dreamt of and what he found purpose in. He would always say that life is a blessing. No matter the circumstances, he would appreciate what he had and did his best in whatever situation arose—and with the time that was given. they have been instilled in us as a family. The effectiveness of his teachings is apparent, and we have an enriched sense of life from having him as our father, husband, grandfather, teacher, mentor, and best friend.

On this second anniversary of Rupinder’s passing, we renew our commitment to carry his philosophies with us throughout our life journeys. We will always remember and appreciate everything he did during his time here on earth, all the sacrifices he made through the years, and all the uncon-

ditional love he gave us from the very beginning. Words can’t express the amount of love and respect we have for him. There simply aren’t enough words to convey that level of admiration. We will continue building upon his legacy and passing along the knowledge, wisdom, and perspective that he earned throughout his life. We will always keep him in our hearts, forever.
