People encouraged to prepare for strong winds
People living in the coastal regions of British Columbia, as well as in Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley and parts of the Interior, can expect stormy weather and strong winds starting Tuesday, Nov. 19 and extending through Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2024.
Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued wind warnings and special weather statements due to a significant fall storm that will bring southeasterly winds through the afternoon on Tuesday, with peak wind speeds expected that evening for most coastal regions.
The strong winds are likely to continue on Wednesday morning but are expected to ease later in the day.
Wind warnings and special weather statements are in effect for most coastal regions, in addition to the Fraser Valley, Metro Vancouver and other parts of B.C. For up-to-date weather forecasts and alerts, visit: https:// www.weather.gc.ca
The Province continues to monitor conditions closely and work directly with communities to support preparedness and response actions.
The Province is taking a number of actions to keep people and communities safe in the event of flooding at all times of the year, including:
The Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness is working closely with communities on preparedness activities, including weekly Natural Hazard Information calls and event-specific co-ordination calls with First Nations, communities and partner agencies.
The River Forecast Centre is monitoring weather patterns and river conditions and remains vigilant for any shifts toward extreme wet weather.
The Ministry of Transportation and Transit will have maintenance contractors monitoring conditions, clearing culverts and pre-positioning crews and equipment to respond quickly to potential flooding or debris buildup during
this weather event, to ensure safe and clear roadways.
The Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness is able to issue broadcast intrusive alerts as requested by First Nations and local governments to warn people in areas where there may be imminent threats due to flooding.
People are asked to take precautions, including developing a household plan, putting together emergency kits, connecting with neighbours and learning about the local government emergency response plan for their area.
Following any disaster event, property owners and residents are advised to contact their insurance provider immediately to obtain advice about their next steps in cleanup and repairs resulting from the disaster.
Some areas can also expect heavy rain at times during this storm, but winds will remain the primary concern. People are encouraged to take the following steps:
Have a plan:
Prepare for a possible power outage or other disruption to infrastructure by creating a household emergency kit with enough nonperishable food, water and supplies to support your household for a week. Make sure it is stored in an accessible location that everyone knows about. If your lights go out, check to see whether BC Hydro is already aware of the outage by visiting: https://www.bchydro. com/index.html
Assemble an individual grab-and-go bag for each member of the household with the essentials they will need if asked to evacuate.
Protect your home:
People are advised to prepare for possible strong winds and flooding of low-lying areas by securing loose outdoor objects and moving equipment and other assets from low-lying areas to higher ground, where possible. Clear perimeter drains, eavestroughs and gutters.
Sandbags also help and can be made available through your local government.
Recognize the danger signs:
If you live near a waterway, a change in water colour or rapid change in water level, especially a drop, could indicate a problem upstream. Call your local fire, police or public works department immediately if you suspect something is out of the ordinary.
If you face a threatening flood situation, park vehicles away from streams and waterways, move electrical appliances to upper floors and make sure to anchor fuel supplies. Listen to local officials if you are asked to evacuate.
In the event of flooding, some tips about what to avoid:
Steer clear of river and coastal shorelines:
Keep away from river edges and shorelines. During periods of high flow, river banks may be unstable and more prone to sudden collapse. Stay away and keep young children and pets away from the banks of fast-flowing streams and flooded areas or bridges.
During a storm surge or coastal flooding, people should:
Move away from the shoreline if you see signs of coastal flooding.
Do not drive through flood waters.
Do not go out on the water, as storm surges can generate strong currents.
Do not assume it's safe to go on the water or to the shoreline if the water recedes.
Evacuate if instructed to do so by local authorities.
Do not drive through flood water:
Extensive water pooling on roads can be expected. Never attempt to drive or walk in flood water. Approximately 15 cm (six inches) of fast-moving water can knock over an adult,
PUNJABI PATRIK A STAFF pMjwbI p`iqRkw stw&
and 61 cm (two feet) of rushing water can carry away most vehicles, including SUVs and pickup trucks.
Landslide risk:
Heavy rain may contribute to landslides and dangerous debris in creeks and waterways. Be safe and do not go to watch the rushing water. If you notice trees beginning to lean or bend near your home, or cracks developing in the hillside, consult an engineer or contact local authorities.
There are more details in PreparedBC’s Flood Preparedness Guide. The guide contains useful information to help British Columbians better protect themselves and their homes and understand what to do if their home or community is at risk of flooding.
Driving safety:
Crashes can be prevented when motorists are prepared. Some helpful tips for travelling in wet weather and winter driving conditions:
Research the current road conditions before you leave at DriveBC’s website. More than 1,000 highway webcam views are available at more than 450 locations throughout the province.
Check the weather forecast and consider postponing travel. If travel is necessary, wait until conditions improve.
Wear comfortable clothing that does not restrict movement while driving. Bring warm clothing, such as winter boots, coat, gloves and hat, in case you need to get out of the vehicle.
Have an emergency plan. Ensure your vehicle is equipped with a full tank of fuel, a windshield scraper and snow brush, food and water, a first-aid kit and other emergency supplies.
Do not panic if you get stuck or stranded. Stay with your vehicle for safety and warmth.
If you have a cellphone, call for roadside assistance. For emergencies, call 911.

2024 Mazda CX-90 PHEV –Seats Seven or Eight in Style.
Review by Veeno Dewan
2024 the Mazda CX-90
The large
crossover can seat eight occupants and represents the company’s new flagship vehicle. For now, it is the only electrified three-row crossover on the market available. The body is designed to be sleek with crafted curves and a typical Mazda design language. Discreet chrome trim is tasteful and spare. The CX-90 rides on available 21-inch diamond-cut wheels that feature a slick well integrated black metallic finish. It is features the typically sensuous, sculpted sleek looking Mazda design language Mazda fans love so much.
There are three powertrains for buyers to choose from. The base CX-90 Turbo as tested has the 280-horsepower, turbocharged 3.3-liter inline six-cylinder engine with a 48-volt Mild-hybrid Boost and i-stop setup.
The PHEV (plug-in hybrid) model as tsted combines a 2.5-liter fourcylinder engine, an electric motor, and a 17.8-kilowatt-hour battery, for a total system output of 323 hp. The most powerful version is the Turbo S, which uses the same basic engine as the Turbo but bumped up to 340 hp, giving it the most horsepower and torque of any production engine from Mazda. All three versions put the power to the road through an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The three-row SUV can be configured to
carry six, seven, or eight occupants. Mazda rates the CX-90 PHEV with a up to 42 km of pure electric range or you can cleverly “store” the charge for later use. Charging times for the battery come in at 1.3 hours on a Level 2 plug: and 6.4 hours via Level 1.
The 2024 Mazda CX-90 has a starting entry -level MSRP of $45,900 to $64,3350. The GS, DS-L and GT version features a 280 horsepower 3.3L e-SKYACTIV engine with 332 lb-ft torque. The signature edition meanwhile adds front and rear parking sensors, a 360-degree camera, driver attention alert, automatic emergency rear braking, and traffic jam assist. The Signature also appoints luxury touches like exclusive Nappa leather-trimmed seating and other enhancements.
The CX-90’s cabin design has a luxury premium feel. High quality materials, such as Nappa leather, wood, and toneon-tone fabrics that all come together harmoniously. Top line Signature models have an even more premium look and feel with unique Japanese Kumihimo stitching using negative space to create a unique design ethos. There is room for up to eight passengers. Opt for the second-row captain’s chairs and the total seating drops to seven.
New, advanced technologies and amenities enhancements include such features as an optional 10.3- or larger 12.3-inch infotainment display
controlled via a click wheel on the CX-90’s center console, which is more intuitive to use, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard, The CX-90 offers a 12-speaker Bose premium stereo. available third-row USB-C charging ports, air conditioning vents, and upgraded interior lighting, are among many more features.
The safety suite is good. Mazda CX-90 gets smart brake support front, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise with stop and go, lane keep assist, and road departure protection standard across the board. Mazda has also introduced a new Driver Personalization System that uses cameras to ID your face and switch dozens of functions to your setting. Great for a
body lift on tight corners to enhance the grip and allows all occupants to maintain a natural posture. The steering is responsive, and despite its size and weight, the CX-90 is fairly agile. Fuel ratings are 9.9 L/100 km city; 8.7 highway; and 9.4 combined. The CX-90 also has a good towing ability at up to 5,000 lbs.
To sum up, the 2024 CX 90 is an attractive proposition, with a PHEV version offering decent fuel economy, all electric range for urban and city driving up to three rows of seats and eight seating capacity- what’s not to love? A must buy if you need maximum people carrying ability and comes highly recommended.
family ride that sees multiple drivers. On the road – ride and handling is stand out thanks to Mazda Kinematic Posture Control, which suppresses

Movember: More Than Just a Moustache
This month you might have noticed more men growing moustaches, though very stylish, its more than just about growing facial hair, its Movember. Movember is a global movement that is dedicated to raising awareness about men’s health, a topic that is often overlooked or stigmatized. From prostate and testicular cancer to mental health and suicide prevention, Movember encourages men to prioritize their well-being and aims to break the silence around these critical issues.
Prostate cancer is the most diagnosed cancer in men across 118 countries, making it the number one cancer in men for 66% of the world. Its risk increases significantly after age 50, particularly for those with a family history. Prostate cancer is often called a silent disease because it usually presents no symptoms in its early stages, highlighting the critical need for regular check-ups. Routine health screenings, such as PSA blood tests, can detect prostate cancer early and significantly enhance treatment success rates. Unfortunately, discomfort or fear often prevents men from seeking screenings. Movember serves as a reminder of the importance of prioritizing health check-ups and promotes conversations about prostate health.
While prostate cancer typically affects older men, testicular cancer is a significant concern for younger men, primarily between the ages of 15 and 40. However, it’s important to note that testicular cancer can occur at any age, it is the second most common cancer among boys aged 15 to 19, following leukemia. Approximately 6% of cases are diagnosed in children and teens, and about 7% occur in men over 55. Though less common than prostate cancer, testicular cancer is highly treatable when detected early. Performing a simple selfexam can help identify unusual lumps, swelling, or changes. These warning signs should never be ignored. If you notice anything unusual, be sure to contact your doctor as soon as possible.
Mental health is another focus of Movember, as many men struggle silently with mental health challenges. Societal
pressures to appear strong and self-reliant discourage men from opening up about their feelings or seeking help. This stigma can lead to isolation, worsening mental health conditions like depression and anxiety. Unlike physical illnesses, mental health challenges often go unnoticed by others. Speaking to a trusted friend, family member, or professional can be the first step toward healing. Movember works to normalize these conversations, reminding us that mental health is just as important as physical health.
The concerning statistics surrounding men’s mental health emphasize the need for open conversations and support. Men are three to four times more likely than women to lose their lives to mental health struggles, accounting for nearly 75% of the estimated 4,000 annual deaths in Canada linked to these challenges. Many of these tragedies could be prevented if men felt more comfortable seeking help. Recognizing signs of distress, such as withdrawal, changes in behavior, or expressions of hopelessness, can empower loved ones to step in and offer support. Even a simple, heartfelt conversation, asking how someone is really doing and listening without judgment, can open the door to lifesaving assistance. Movember reminds us of the power of connection and that reaching out could make all the difference.
Movember is more than moustaches, it’s a global movement addressing men’s health issues, including prostate and testicular cancer, mental health, and prevention of tragedies tied to mental health struggles. It empowers men to prioritize their wellbeing and breaks the stigma around seeking help. Whether by growing a mustache, joining a fitness challenge, donating, or simply starting a conversation with the men in your life, everyone can contribute. Visit Movember.com to discover how you can get involved and make a difference. Movember reminds us that by encouraging open conversations and supporting one another, we can help men live healthier, longer, and happier lives.
SASI receives 3 million+ photographs taken by late BC photojournalist Chandra Bodalia, making this the largest bequest to UFV
The South Asian Studies Institute (SASI) at the University of the Fraser Valley received 3 million+ photographs taken by the legendary BC photojournalist late Mr. Chandra Bodalia for stewardship and preservation. The SASI plans to digitize, preserve, and provide open access to the photographs through its key initiative, South Asian Canadian Digital Archive (https://sacda.ca/) in partnership with the Royal BC Museum (RBCM), and BC Archives.
The Bodalia family donated the photos to SASI’s care and SASI Director, Dr. Satwinder Bains states, “We are deeply beholden to the Bodalia family for trusting us with this family treasure. Their altruistic motive of his family to ensure that Chandra`s work is preserved and memorialized as well, is to be commended. For many years, they have been the loving stewards of this legacy of Chandra’s and the emotional heartfelt goodbye his son Vimal said to the photos will forever remain with us as caretakers of this valuable Canadian asset”.
The Chandra Bodalia collection is the largest known private collection of a South Asian Canadian community member in Canada and the largest bequest to UFV. The collection spans three decades, from the 1980s to 2017, and covers a tremendously vast and diverse population demographic..
“I am very attached to all of Chandra’s photographs,” said Candra’s motherChanchalben Bodalia. “They keep the memory of my son alive for me. But I was also concerned about the deteriorating condition of these photographs in our garage. I am, therefore, very thankful to SASI for taking the initiative of digitizing his photographs and to the RBCM for safely storing them. Thanks to them, my son and his contributions will be remembered forever.”
Chandravadan “Chandra” Bodalia was born in 1948 in the village of Sisodra near Navsari in Gujarat, India. Bodalia immigrated to Canada in 1976 and settled in Vancouver, BC. His artistic spirit followed him in all his work as he began a career as a photojournalist in the late 1980s. His photographs provide a vital link between the past and present since a significant amount of South Asian immigration to BC and Canada occurred from 1970s onwards. The collection is a vast and critically important body of records of arts and culture from diverse South Asian Canadian community events, activities, and supportive activism. The photographs also reflect the intercultural connections and collaborations within the immigrant communities in Canada as well as the ongoing complex transnational ties to the South Asian region.
“This is such a remarkable collection,” said Vimal Bodalia (Chandra’s son). “It
shows the history of the Lower Mainland and the province whether it was political, religious, or events around the communities of British Columbia. Our family is so grateful that years of hard work and attending these events can be displayed for everyone to see. We are looking forward to seeing all the important historical events around the province that our father has captured.”
Director of Archives, Emma Wright affirms, “We are honoured to partner in preserving these records and assist the important community archiving efforts spearheaded by SASI. The Royal BC Museum’s ongoing support for the SACDA over the last few years reflects our commitment to amplifying marginalized and excluded voices. With the BC Archives future acquisition of this collection, we are actively working to address a more inclusive and representative archives.”
In partnership with the Royal BC Museum and the BC Archives, the SASI is responsible for the appraisal and arrangement of the Bodalia collection to identify materials for permanent preservation, digitization and digital preservation. Following digitization, the physical collection will finally be transferred for description, rehousing, ongoing preservation and public access by the Royal BC Museum at their new PARC Campus facility. The digitization and digital preservation will follow a methodical selection process and consultation with
project partners, a Community Advisory Committee, and community members, and will focus on significant records from the 1980s onwards. The collection will be openly and freely available on the South Asian Canadian Digital Archive (https:// sacda.ca) in the following years.
“This is a monumental collection,” says Thamilini Jothilingam, Digital Archivist for the South Asian Canadian Digital Archive. “The width and breadth of the diversity of the South Asian Canadian communities Bodalia documented here is very important. In the context of Canadian history and historiography that has systematically silenced and erased the South Asian Canadian lived experiences for decades and centuries, Bodalia’s photographs hold the evidentiary and visual narratives, the ethnographical traces of a collective, intercultural, and communal presence.”
The SASI welcomes all to join this collective archival journey! If you know Chandra Bodalia and/or if you or your organization have been photographed by him at any events, please reach out to us. We invite you to become a Volunteer Community Curator and help us select, sort, classify, and identify people and places from the Chandra Bodalia collection.

SASI receives $300,000 USD Mellon Foundation grant
The South Asian Studies Institute (SASI) at the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) is excited to share the announcement of $300,000 USD funding towards a transformative digitization project: Histories of South Asians in Canada: A Visual Ethnographic Documentation of Chandra Bodalia.
The awarded project is supported by the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) as part of the Digitizing Hidden Collections: Amplifying Unheard Voices Awards which are generously funded by the Mellon Foundation. The awards program focuses on thematic digitization efforts, prioritizing materials that deepen public understanding of historically marginalized communities and unrecognized perspectives. A complete
list of projects and summaries is available at https://www.clir.org/hiddencollections/ funded-projects/
The goals of the award are to amplify historically overlooked voices, providing opportunities for public engagement and understanding. These aims support the recent bequest to SASI of 3 million+ photographs taken by the legendary BC photojournalist late Mr. Chandra Bodalia for stewardship and preservation
“We are grateful for this unique funding that will allow us to appraise, arrange, preserve, digitize and provide public access to a tremendous treasure trove of photographs”, said SASI Director Satwinder Bains. “Chandra Bodalia diligently documented the vibrant linguistic, social, cultural, political, economic, and
religious diversity of South Asian Canadian communities in BC, Canada for over 30 years “.

Debris, downed trees prompt travel advisory for Vancouver Island highways
A significant fall storm is impacting Vancouver Island. Downed power lines, debris and fallen trees have resulted in multiple highway closures on the island.
Drivers are advised to avoid travel for the remainder of Tuesday night, Nov. 19, and into the morning of Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2024.
Highways closed include:
Highway 4 from Highway 4A (Errington) to Port Alberni, and from Port Alberni to Tofino/Ucluelet junction
Highway 14 west of Sooke
Highway 18 at Hillcrest
Highway 28 from Gold River to Campbell River
Pacific Marine Circle Route
Drivers can expect additional closures as the storm moves through. Environment Canada warns that strong southeasterly winds will continue throughout the night and into Wednesday morning but should ease late in the day on Wednesday.
As soon as its safe to do so, maintenance contractors will begin clearing debris, and BC Hydro is prioritizing repairs to the many power outages across the island.
The arrival of a significant storm to the south coast of British Columbia is a reminder to drivers that weather conditions can change quickly at this time of year, and to be prepared for the onset of winter road conditions.
If snow or freezing temperatures are in the forecast, people should check DriveBC before setting out, so they know what road conditions they will face. Drivers should stay off the road should conditions worsen and ensure their vehicle is properly equipped with snow tires should they need to travel.
Drivers can help maintenance crews by moving over safely when they see a vehicle with an amber light approaching. This will allow crews to clear snow and improve road conditions to reduce hazards for drivers and help them get to where they’re going safely.
With any winter weather event, road and bridge conditions can be unpredictable and
can change quickly. The Ministry of Transportation and Transit’s contractors monitor the weather closely and will apply anti-icing brine to road surfaces when freezing temperatures are forecast.
As well, the Port Mann and Alex Fraser bridges are equipped with a cable collar system to remove ice and snow from the cables. Advanced weather data means crews are better prepared and can activate the systems sooner to remove snow in bad weather as quickly as possible.
In certain conditions, a partial or full closure of the bridges and roads may be necessary to ensure driver safety. The ministry will update people as quickly as possible about any closure via DriveBC and its social media channels, and through other methods such as signage and traffic advisories to local media.
Emergency alert test coming to cellphones, TV, radio
At 1:55 p.m. (Pacific time) on Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2024, a test of the National Public Alerting System will occur to improve public safety in the event of an emergency.
The test alert will go to all compatible cellphones, as well as interrupt radio and television broadcasts.
The test message to cellphones will read: “This is a TEST of the BC Emergency Alert system. This is ONLY a TEST. In an emergency, this message would tell you what to do to stay safe. This information could save your life. Click for more info: https://www.emergencyinfobc.gov.bc.ca/ event/test/ This is ONLY a TEST. No action is required.”
This test will assess the system’s readiness for an emergency and identify any required adjustments. The BC Emergency Alert system was launched on April 6, 2018, and is tested twice a year in spring and fall.
The National Public Alerting System is a collaborative initiative between federal, provincial and territorial governments, as well as industry partners. It provides a standard alerting capability to rapidly
warn the public of imminent or unfolding hazards and threats to life and safety.
Recognizing the importance of this tool, in 2022, the Province expanded the use of BC Emergency Alerts beyond tsunami warnings to include imminent threats from floods, wildfires and extreme-heat emergencies.
This year, the Province, in partnership with the federal government, announced that the Earthquake Early Warning system in British Columbia is operational. This system will automatically issue a BC Emergency Alert before strong shaking is felt, to give precious seconds of warning for people to better protect themselves and others.
Police issue alerts for civil emergencies and Amber Alerts.
During the 2023 and 2024 wildfire seasons, tens of thousands of people were asked to evacuate on short notice due to the threat of wildfires. BC Emergency Alerts are an important tool to provide people with timely, life-saving information.

Abbotsford Board of Education Re-elects Leadership Team for 2024-25
At the Annual Organizational Meeting held on November 5, 2024, the Abbotsford Board of Education re-elected Trustee Shirley Wilson as Board Chair and Trustee Preet Rai as Vice Chair, entrusting them to lead the district through another year of progress and innovation. Both Wilson and Rai bring continuity and experienced leadership to the district as they work alongside the Board to advance strategic goals that support Abbotsford students, staff, and families.
Reflecting on her re-election, as well as the board’s recent strategic planning process, Chair Wilson spoke passionately about the district’s vision for student success and the essential contributions of all employees. “Our school district serves as the heart of this community, a place where we foster each student’s unique potential and growth. Our 2024-2028 strategic plan keeps student success as our north star, creating a clear ‘line of sight’ from each employee’s role to our shared goals. Every contribution matters and together we are dedicated to fostering a supportive, engaged community to enhance all students’ educational journey,” Wilson remarked.
Vice Chair Rai expressed his appreciation for the continued opportunity to serve in this leadership capacity, stating, “I’m honoured to work alongside Chair Wilson and my fellow trustees to support the strategic direction of our district. Together, we are focused on creating engaging and equitable educational opportunities for every student, aligned with the district’s mission and vision.”
Each year, the Board elects its chair and vice-chair as outlined in Board Policies 4 and 5, ensuring a governance structure that remains responsive to the needs of the district’s community. Chair Wilson and Vice Chair Rai’s re- elections affirm the Board’s confidence in their leadership, as well as their dedication to advancing initiatives that make Abbotsford School District a recognized leader in educational excellence.
Chair Wilson concluded by thanking her colleagues for their trust in her leadership and congratulating Vice Chair Rai on his re-election. “It’s a privilege to work with such a dedicated team, all united in our commitment to providing a supportive, innovative environment for every learner in our district.”

Archway Recognizes Local Community Builders
Three local individuals and three organizations were honoured at the annual Archway Community Builders’ Awards on Thursday, November 7th at the Matsqui Centennial Auditorium.
“Our team gets to see thousands of unsung heroes who quietly commit themselves to building up our community. Tonight, we have the honor of recognizing 18 amazing individuals and organizations who strengthen the fabric of our community with their leadership,” said Rod Santiago, Archway Central Executive Officer in his opening speech to the 150 attendees.
In her speech, Pamela Chatry, Archway Board Vice-President and Committee Chair thanked the organizing committee, volunteers, board and staff who helped make the event happen with a special mention to the sponsors, FortisBC and Hub International, for helping grow the event from its humble beginnings in 2006. The event was emceed by Dr. Khyati Shetty, the Director of the School of Business at the University of the Fraser Valley. She shared her experience moving to Canada four years ago and the welcoming environment she found.
Awards were given in the Community Builders Category, which recognizes long-term community service, and the Emerging Community Builders category which recognized those who may be younger, new to the Fraser Valley or have recently started giving back.

“A place is only as good as the people in it and Foundry would not be as special as it is without the contributions from volunteers like Kang,” shared Jade Randhawa, a Foundry Abbotsford staff member who introduced him.
Brian Neufeld
Brian Neufeld received the Community Builder Award for his collaborative efforts to rally teams of volunteers for the Archway Food Bank and generous support for community fundraisers.
Neufeld gives employment opportunities to young athletes and encourages his staff and contacts to join him in volunteering at the Archway Food Bank every month, including an annual Christmas event at the Food Bank Warehouse.
Dao Tran
Dao Tran was recognized for giving back through selfless volunteering throughout the community and generous financial support of organizations including Archway.
Tran moved to Abbotsford in 1985 after escaping Vietnam and that Tran “is so grateful to live in Canada and especially to live in Abbotsford. He feels that Abbotsford has given him so much that he wants to give back to this community he loves. He is the most prolific volunteer giving of his time and money to many organizations.”
Abbotsford Canucks
The Abbotsford Canucks received a Community Builder’s Award for their incredible support of the Abbotsford community, including partnering with Archway to fund vital programs, host events and give back through volunteering.
“Over the past four years, we have felt this community embrace us with open arms and it truly demonstrates Abbotsford’s ability to rally together for a common purpose,” said Cambree Lovesey on behalf of the Abbotsford Canucks. “Sports and specifically hockey, is something that brings people together despite living in a world that feels so divided. These days we take this responsibility of being an active and engaged part of our community extremely seriously, and Abbotsford has given us so many opportunities and Archway as well.”
BC Muslim Association – Abbotsford Branch
The Abbotsford Branch of the BC Muslim Association was recognized for their steadfast dedication to providing newcomers of all backgrounds with food, translation, medical care and transportation.
The organization’s work with refugees was introduced by Archway staff member Mirela Gigovic.
BCMA Chairperson Dr. Tahir Khalid spoke about how they started welcoming refugee families back in 2017 in partnership with Archway when the Syrian refugees began arriving.
Central Heights Church
Central Heights Church received an award for their long-term partnership with Archway and providing space, volunteers and resources to support newcomers, children, parents and more.
Brian Robertson, Archway Board Secretary and Executive Pastor at the Seven Oaks Alliance Church spoke about Central Heights’ visibility in the community, not just from their location but because of their many services and partnerships.
Shetty wrapped up the event with an inspiring message, “every nominee, every recipient, every volunteer and every person here tonight, you are the voice of hope. The hand of kindness and heart that inspires people to do more and give back, and also believe in the power of connection. Here’s to the future. We’re all going to build together: one step, one act and one heart at a time.”
In his closing speech, Santiago quoted the Honourable Murray Sinclair, who passed away the same week as the awards.
“We must never give up the responsibility of doing what we can, when we can. The teaching that I have learned is, at the end of my life, I will be turned around on my spirit journey. They will turn me around and they will make me look back on the trail that I created in this world.”

Any hectic activity that has just started to You are in a good position to make some final decisions on something you may have first considered late July to mid August. The position of somebody else may be clearer now, particularly if they decide to bring something to an end. If this does happen it can make it easier in some way when it comes to normal routines in life.
Someone else can be very straightforward as to what they either like or expect from you. Be careful you don’t read into this more than is being offered, particularly if there is an expectation for you to take on responsibilities or to put things in place. Make decisions up to late September that will keep you in control of your finances.
Whatever you had to rethink when it comes to putting things in place since mid August will now allow you to be clear of mind to late September when it comes to something that might have been first discussed late July to mid August. You can now make decisions that please you. Don’t be tempted to spend too much though.
You are in an excellent position to be able to make decisions to late September that will take your life forward. You can feel as though you have greater personal choice or some control at last. There might be a second stage to this from January to April next year and for this reason it could be wise to ensure there is some flexibility.
Whatever financial decisions you may have first considered from late July to mid August can now be looked at more thoroughly, especially in relation to the best actions to take to be able to move forward. You need to be able to satisfy your own priorities, which may not necessarily fit in with the expectations of somebody else.
You are in a good position to come to realisations regarding any situations where you might feel as though you are taking on more than is reasonable on a regular basis. This is more about making decisions to bring matters to an end where commitments attached will have an inhibiting effect on possible future accomplishments.
Focus on anything you are determined to develop more for your own independence in the future. You can realise that contemplation alone will not move things forward. From now to early September you need to look at the commitments that would need to be taken on. Doing this in stages will help you to get used to the changes.
You could come to the realisation, from now to late September, that it is better to scale down ideas you might have had late July to mid August to be able to take these things into the future successfully. Others might have bigger ambitions but you can be happier with small steps, allowing you to have a feeling of better control.
Having absolute confidence about how you stand on any matter will engender respect from others, even though they may not fully agree with you. This could result in clarity when it comes to commitment and support, which may have been an issue from late July to mid August and was left hanging. Be mindful of the obligations you take on.
Something you thought had become evident since mid August where someone else’s decision making is concerned could again become more unknown to late September. It could be that they need to withdraw to make final decisions. These could involve taking your priorities into account as well as generating some sort of pleasure in life.
You are in a position to late September to contemplate future plans and possibilities that you may have wanted from late July to mid August but could not finalise. You have the opportunity to engage with others and get a response. This could also have a lot to do with leaving the past behind up to 20th November so you can move on with a new life direction.
Something that wasn’t made perfectly clear or finalised by somebody else between late July and mid August can now return to late September where final decisions need to be made by them. It can be up to you to ensure they do not avoid responsibilities that could leave you with too much to get properly organised or put into place.
Movember: More Than Just a Moustache
This month you might have noticed more men growing moustaches, though very stylish its more than just about growing facial hair, its Movember. Movember serves as a
reminder of the importance of prioritizing health check-ups and promotes conversations about prostate health. Performing a simple self-exam can help identify unusual lumps, swelling, or changes. These warning signs should never be ignored. If you notice anything unusual, be sure to contact your doctor as soon as possible. Mental health is another focus of Movember, as many men struggle silently with mental health challenges. Societal pressures to appear strong and selfreliant discourage men from opening up about their feelings or seeking help. This stigma can lead to isolation, worsening mental health conditions
like depression and anxiety. Unlike physical illnesses, mental health challenges often go unnoticed by others. Speaking to a trusted friend, family member, or professional can be the first step toward healing. Movember works to normalize these conversations, reminding us that mental health is just as important as physical health. The concerning statistics surrounding men is mental health emphasize the need for open conversations and support. Even a simple, heartfelt conversation, asking how someone is really doing and listening without judgment, can open the door to
lifesaving assistance. Movember reminds us of the power of connection and that reaching out could make all the difference. Movember is more than moustaches, it’s a global movement addressing men’s health issues, including prostate and testicular cancer, mental health, and prevention of tragedies tied to mental health struggles. It empowers men to prioritize their well-being and breaks the stigma around seeking help. Whether by growing a mustache, joining afitness challenge, donating, or simply starting a conversation with the men in your life, everyone can contribute. Visit Movember.com to discover how you can get involved and make a difference. Movember reminds us that by encouraging open conversations and supporting one another, we can help men live healthier, longer, and happier lives.
