BC Liberal plan keeps seniors at home longer, provides single-room long-term care homes More can and must be done to ensure seniors and our loved ones can stay at home, close to family and friends, for as long as possible and are provided with the best possible place to live when a care facility is needed.

• The Seniors’ Home Care Tax Credit, which provides a new tax credit of up to $7,000 a year for those receiving home care so more seniors can live in their own homes longer. • A five-year, $1-billion longterm care home plan that will replace and upgrade outdated long-term care homes and assisted living residences to ensure every senior who wants a private room can have one.

The BC Liberals are announcing the new Seniors’ Home Care Tax Credit in addition to a five-year $1-billion plan that will help seniors stay in their homes longer and live their best possible lives in long-term care facilities. “The heartbreaking COVID-19 impacts on our long-term care facilities “Unlike the NDP’s plan, which does and assisted living residences are a nothing for seniors now, our plan protragedy that can never happen again,” vides relief for seniors immediately, concluded Wilkinson. “We need to and will help them stay at home lon- make it easier for seniors to stay at ger with a tax credit of up to $7,000 home longer and when long-term care for home care services,” said BC is needed — our loved ones get the Liberal Leader Andrew Wilkinson. care they deserve.” “Our $1-billion plan will improve long-term care homes and get seniors The BC Liberals will act to help get their own rooms far sooner than the seniors the supports they need right now, unlike John Horgan’s approach NDP’s 10-year plan.” of offering unrealistic 10-year plans The BC Liberal seniors plan will and making promises he never actually keeps. introduce:

3 small savings sources you haven’t thought of

(NC) With so many of us looking for ways to save a buck and make our dollars go further, here are a few lesserknown savings sources worth taking advantage of. No-fee accounts With interest rates so low, that highinterest savings account isn’t likely to net much over the coming months or years. Add banking fees to the equation and it’s possible you’re losing money. No-fee accounts are widely available from Canadian banks, credit unions and even retailers, and while you won’t see a credit on your statements, you may keep a lot in savings. Automated bill payment A single missed bill payment can not only cost you in interest, but may even impact your credit score. Banks and credit cards have plenty of options for

PAGE 10

setting up automated or preauthorized bill payments to make sure you never miss a single one. Just remember to keep an eye on the account you’re paying from and maintain enough float to cover your costs. Accounts that offer points Points cards that let you earn on everyday items are perfect for anyone looking to get more for their money. While we typically associate points with credit cards, there’s also an option for anyone who’d rather not spend on credit. The PC Money Account offers rewards on every dollar spent anywhere you shop and even gives points for bill payments too.

Half of Small Business Voters Undecided Undecided voters provide a big opportunity for all parties to put forward their ideas on how to support small businesses and strengthen our local economies. Less red tape, reduced taxes and fees, and lowering property tax burden rank as top priorities. New survey data released by The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) today shows the urgent need for commitments on small business initiatives in advance of the provincial election on October 24, 2020. Survey results show 20 per cent of small business owners do not yet know how they will vote. An additional 29 per cent who have an idea of how they would vote say their decision could change. “As parties begin announcing platform commitments, CFIB urges them to focus on small business initiatives,” says Muriel Protzer, Senior Policy Analyst, BC and the North. “Businesses took a significant hit earlier this year to close their doors, leaving some without any revenues to pay the bills. Targeted initiatives that support local businesses

and jobs are necessary to spur the growth our province needs to get on the right path to recovery,” adds Protzer. When asked which measures were most important and would influence how they vote, small business owners said reducing provincial red tape (56 per cent), reducing provincial taxes and fees (54 per cent), and working with municipalities to lower property taxes (50 per cent) were the most important and influential initiatives. Two parties have announced Provincial Sales Tax (PST) initiatives in recent weeks. Other taxes, such as the Employer Health Tax and property taxes have had less of a focus, but remain top of mind for small business owners. CFIB’s Small Business Recovery Dashboard which is part of the #SmallBusinessEveryDay campaign shows BC has a long path to recovery. While 64 per cent of SMEs have returned to full operations, just 34 per cent are back to full staffing capacity and only 27 per cent are making normal revenues.

STUDY: MASK MANDATES SHOWN TO Mukh Mohit’s LIFECARE HOMEOPATHY SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCE SPREAD OF UNIT OF NATURAL HOMEOPATHIC SOLUTIONS INC. COVID-19

A

new study by Simon Fraser University (SFU) researchers has found clear evidence that wearing a mask can have a significant impact on the spread of COVID-19. The researchers, from SFU’s Department of Economics, have determined that mask mandates are associated with a 25 per cent or larger weekly reduction in COVID-19 cases.

places is a powerful policy measure to slow the spread of COVID-19, with little associated economic disruption in the short term.

The study also found that relaxed restrictions on businesses and gatherings (including retail, restaurants and bars) were positively associated with subsequent COVID-19 case growth – a factor that could offset and obscure the The finding of their study, still in health benefits of mask mandates. preprint and not yet peer-reviewed, conclude that mandating indoor masks The most stringent restrictions on businationwide in early July could have nesses and gatherings observed in the reduced the weekly number of new data were associated with a weekly decases in Canada by 25 to 40 per cent in crease of 48 to 57 per cent in new cases, mid-August, which translates into 700 relative to the trend in the absence of restrictions. to 1,100 fewer cases per week. The study analysed the impact of mask mandates that were implemented across Ontario’s 34 Public Health Units (PHUs) over the course of two months. Researchers compared the results of PHUs that adopted mask mandates earlier to those that adopted mandates later. They determined that, in the first few weeks after their introduction, mask mandates were associated with an average weekly reduction of 25 to 31 per cent in newly diagnosed COVID-19 cases, relative to the trend in mask mandate absence, in July and August. A further Canada-wide analysis with province-level data found a significantly negative association between mask mandates and subsequent COVID-19 case growth – up to a 46 per cent average reduction in weekly cases in the first several weeks after adoption.

The study authors note that while the results are significant, their sample period does not allow them to definitively say whether the effect of mask mandates persists or weakens beyond the first few weeks after implementation. However, they conclude that, combined with other policy measures, mask mandates can be a potent policy tool for slowing the spread of COVID-19.

I don't take myself too seriously as an actor : Nawazuddin Siddiqui

In 2003, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, a struggling actor then, had dropped in on the Kolkata set of Sudhir Mishra's Calcutta Mail, featuring Anil Kapoor and Rani Mukerji. An admirer of the filmmaker's work, he was hopeful of landing a role in the movie. "I happened to be in the city at that time, and was keen to meet sir [Mishra], hoping that he would consider me suitable for a role, but could not even reach him. I was just another struggler," recounts the actor.Almost 17 years later, Siddiqui has realised his dream of working with Mishra. The actor is earning rave reviews for his nuanced performance as the ambitious Ayyan Mani in Serious Men. Describing himself as a director's actor, he says, "You have to understand the director's mind. Before the film rolls, there are rounds of meetings and

readings, that's when I start internalising what the director wants. I don't take myself too seriously as an actor. I do what I have to, and leave the rest to the audience." The Netflix film is an adaptation of Manu Joseph's 2010 novel of the same name. The actor did not pore over the book, but followed Mishra's vision to bring alive the protagonist, who is willing to go to any extent to provide a better life to his son. "I could identify with Ayyan's character as I have had my share of struggles in real life. I have a son, so the connection was stronger. Every parent wants the best for his child." One of the finest actors of the current generation, Siddiqui doesn't shy away from admitting that he was intimidated by Chennai-based co-actor Aakshath Das, who plays his son. "He would come well-prepared on the set, like Hollywood actors do. I realised from the first day of the shoot that yeh toh baazi maar le jaayega; I knew he would steal the show. There is no way of being one-up on a child. I didn't have to be patient with him, but rather scared of him," says Siddiqui.

Intimate scenes get difficult for me sometimes : Sneha Ullal

Actress Sneha Ullal, who is best known for starring opposite Salman Khan in the 2005 release, "Lucky: No Time For Love", opened up about how she deals with intimate scenes."There are difficult scenes that I'm sure every actor goes through. For me, if intimate scenes are not organised correctly, or not choreographed correctly, they don't keep the ambience comfortable then that affects me and my performance. I am the same in my personal life as well, I always need everything organised. Most of the times a lot of people get uncomfortable choreographing such scenes and the discomfort rubs onto me. So, intimate scenes get difficult for me sometimes," Sneha shared.Sneha will be seen in the upcoming thriller show, "Expiry Date", which revolves around two couples and extra-marital affairs that they are involved in.

Thrill lies in process not medium for actors : Shweta Tripathi

It makes me happy when people refer to me as 'Choocha' or 'Sexa' : Varun Sharma

Actor-comedian Varun Sharma says when fans call him by the names of his popular on-screen characters, it is the biggest compliment he can get."It makes me really happy when people refer to me as Choocha or Sexa (his characters in the 'Fukrey' films and 'Chhichhore' respectively) instead of my name. It's a blessing for any actor to be recognised by the names of the characters they portray," said the actor.Varun, who has made his mark as one of the funniest talents in Bollywood lately, has now bagged an interactive stand-up comedy

show as host. Titled "Sabse Funny Kaun?", the new show has 10-minute episodes and features 10 comedians. "I am truly thankful to the audience for showering so much love, and I'm happy to be back to entertain them. As an actor whose forte is comedy, people are always looking for you to crack them up and I am eager to give people that opportunity as the host of 'Sabse Funny Kaun?'," said Varun. Every episode sees two participants dishing out jokes across topical and alternative comedy. "Sabse Funny Kaun?" is now live on the Flipkart app.

Actress Shweta Tripathi feels waiting around for things to open up could be futile and thus artistes across all mediums should be open to exploring new adventures in professional life. She says for actors, the thrill does not come from the medium but from the process."We knew Covid

would have a far-reaching impact on the industry. As actors, we should do our best to make art slightly differently than we are conditioned and educated to. I have watched quite a few virtual plays in the last few months. The joy on the faces of the performers is unmatchable," Shweta said."For actors, I believe the thrill doesn't come from the medium but from the process. It matters that we reach our stories to people. It shouldn't matter if it's on a stage or on zoom call," she added.Shweta says she sees writers work upon scripts in a way that they fit the virtual format. "It's essential we work around our way to perform and go with the flow. It's an endless wait, and beyond a point it could have emotional ramifications. I urge my friends to keep finding new ways to tell stories. Art is boundless and cannot be restricted by language or place of execution," said Shweta, who was recently seen in sci-fi film "Cargo" co-starring Vikrant Massey.

Vaani Kapoor is 'grateful' the film industry 'is bouncing back'

Even as the government on Wednesday evening announced its decision to open cinema theatres in a phased manner, several film units have already started shooting amid the new normal. Among units that are filming overseas is the Akshay Kumar-starrer "Bell Bottom". The cast and crew have been shooting in Glasgow, Scotland. Actress Vaani Kapoor, who is paired opposite superstar Akshay in the film, says she is happy to see the industry bouncing back."Shooting for 'Bell Bottom' has been fun and a good experience. Despite the ongoing challenges amid the ongoing pandemic,

the team managed to have a really smooth and safe shooting experience while filming with a large crew, for which they deserve all the credit," said Vaani."We were made to feel safe on the sets because of their commitment to safety and hygiene," she added.Vaani is also gearing up to start shooting for Abhishek Kapoor's untitled romantic drama opposite Ayushmann Khurrana."I'm looking forward to shooting with Ayushmann for this progressive love story that is being directed by Abhishek Kapoor. I couldn't feel more grateful that my industry is slowly bouncing back."

“BRIDGING COMMUNITIES”

Top home renovations to invest in this fall (NC) Upgrade your kitchen The kitchen is the heart of your home, and where you’ll be spending lots of time cooking for the holidays and entertaining your small social circle. So, give it a facelift to make sure it’s a bright and welcoming environment. A great DIY project is painting the cabinets in a bold or warm shade and updating the hardware in a metallic neutral. You can also invest in sleek, energy-efficient appliances for a clean, modern aesthetic and get fresh seasonal linens for your tablescape. Finish your basement A finished basement extends your living space and has an excellent return on investment. It’s also the perfect place to turn into a spacious dedicated home office, so you can finally stop working on your dining table or couch and boost your productivity and comfort. But whether you want to turn your basement into that, a rec room or inlaw suite, the first step is installing a high-performance subfloor. The best

option for this is Dricore subfloor panels, which are designed with air gap technology to help protect against mould and moisture and keep floors dry, comfortable and cozy all year. It’s an easy DIY project, as the panels are easy to install and a room only takes half a day to do. Elevate your exteriors Not only does the exterior of your home make the first impression, it can also extend your living space – which is crucial when we’re working, living and playing at home. Make the most of it with areas you can spend time in even when the temperature drops. For example, you can create a sitting area to relax in or host smaller outdoor get-togethers for your social bubble by screening in your porch or installing an awning over your backyard patio. Laying down Dricore panels can work here too, as they will make cold surface feel warmer, softer and cozier for your feet. Complete the space with a heating lamp and you’ll be able to enjoy your exteriors almost all year-round.

Something from the past that you might want to go back to will require a lot of attention to detail. This could also mean putting new methods or means in place. This could be a choice you are making for yourself when it comes to what has been your responsibilities or commitments, especially if boundaries have been lacking.

You can become suddenly enlightened in relation to something that needs to be settled or put in place. This could involve family. Don’t be tempted to take risks where there is little clarity. Work out what you want to enjoy in the future and what could be altered in practical terms to set yourself down a new path towards this.

Get to work on anything at home that could do with newness in some way. Others might encourage this in some way though you could discover that they don’t support some things that are a priority to you. It might also be that you feel you are expected to do more than you want to, especially if it interferes with enjoyment.

Communication with others could take a new direction, especially when it comes to listening to your ideas. There could be differences though when it comes to what you want to put in place. You will want to wind back on responsibilities, not increase them. Don’t spend impulsively on something of instant appeal. Think.

Before you jump into any obligations you need to weigh up exactly how they could affect your personal position. It could also be that something pleasurable may have more commitments attached than you initially realise. A new direction might develop with a situation that is running smoothly. Don’t try to change anything.

The New Moon this week occurs in your sign, providing you with the opportunity to take a new direction with anything important to you personally. Remain confident about the way you feel with any slight risk that might be involved. The opinions of somebody else may lack understanding when it comes to what is important to you.

Stay focussed on what you think needs to be established or put in place. This can involve home or family matters but not necessarily. This can bring to an end a lack of clarity that has existed with regular routines or matters. There is no need to respond to any impatience of somebody else. Let matters take their own course.

Involvement with friends or any situation with a group of people is likely to be enjoyable, especially when it comes to the exchange of ideas. You could learn something new or hear about connections that might prove useful to you later. Take your time considering your options, if somebody expects an instant response.

New opportunities can arise in relation to your work, either present or something you might be seeking. At the same time you could feel pushed to become more innovative when it comes to generating a future direction that gives greater peace or balance. Don’t be afraid to utilise people who are in a position to help. They will.

New directions or future goals that could be pursued can become very obvious. You should feel very comfortable when it comes to having the ability to cope. It is best to do things in small steps – this way you will have greater control of the obligations attached. This will limit you from taking on too much at once and burdening yourself.

Somebody who is quite sure of themself could resonate in a surprising manner with you. This won’t necessarily mean you will feel as though you completely understand them but you should feel comfortable. This might encourage you to think about what you would like to head towards in the future, which could be next year.

New directions involving other people can generate opportunities for you to experience the fulfilment of priorities quite easily. Some differences of opinion may arise but even this does not need to produce difficulty. It might mean you will have to consider something out of the ordinary that will result in being more efficient.

“BRIDGING COMMUNITIES”

The Patrika Media "All Candidates Newspaper Meet" On October 24th, B.C. residents are heading to polls. Needless to say, this election is nothing like we’ve seen before. Voters are limited in their abilities to meet with their local candidates to learn about their platforms, and similarly, candidates are limited in their abilities to campaign face to face. Therefore, the Patrika Media has organized an “All Candidates Newspaper Meet” for ridings in Abbotsford and Mission, which will inform our readers of each candidate’s platform. Some of the responses from the can-

One of the great things is that we can increase the volumes produced when necessary and it is environmentally friendly. Mission has identified a secondary sewer line to the treatment centre in Abbotsford and frankly growth cannot happen without it. If there was a breach in the river portion of the existing pipe it would be an environmental disaster. We will need assistance to complete the project. There are a number of projects on the table and I intend to advocate for assistance. We need more affordable housing projects. We have more work to do with government and our local non profits to build more supportive housing. The massive increase in home values in 2016 and 2017 resulted in a shortage of affordable rental properties which marginalized many people. In Mission the majority of our homeless population is over 50 years of age and in Abbotsford the demographic is a little younger. Mission is close to seeing a finished seniors housing complex which I am sure will have a wait list upon completion. Mission is also desperate for a mix of both market and non market rentals. We need to ensure we have treatment options for those with mental health issues and drug addiction. Reading the coroner’s report each month I am horrified by the rise in numbers of overdose deaths. We need treatment options closer to home. We must address this with the same strength as we have the COVID pandemic. We have begun to see improvements in additional treatment beds but as the pandemic continues we are going to need further investment in access to mental health services. What is your plan to ease the highway traffic for the Fraser Valley? I will be advocating for Highway #1 improvements (widening) as without this, the entire region cannot realize

It also impacts our commuting residents who spend long periods behind the wheel and not at home with their families. Will you invest in public transit options? The bus garage will be complete in 2021 and both local governments and the province have committed to service expansions. There will be continuous investments in public transit that include more environmentally friendly buses. We are building denser communities which will have limited vehicle capacities for cars so investment in transit will be imperative moving forward.

vices. Abbotsford Regional Hospital is seeing an expanded ER but more will need to be done to accommodate new residents. The more Mission Memorial can offer the less pressure on Abbotsford Regional Hospital. A CT scanner in Mission is one such necessary improvement. Recently both Mission and Abbotsford have had primary care centre announcements which will help match patients to doctors which is certainly a step in the right direction. COVID has also taught us about best practises with respect to the design of long term care bed facilities which will be implemented in the building of the long awaited replacement beds in Abbotsford.

largely abandoned after the NDP were elected in 2017). A comprehensive plan to deal with homelessness and addictions is essential and critical to the social well/being of our communities. Mission Council has identified some critical infrastructure needs such the vitally important second Fraser River sewer crossing and traffic circulation issues. If elected, I will give them priority attention. Plans to ease traffic congestion As mentioned, our highway is now way over capacity and must be widened. New public transit initiatives will also need immediate consideration working cooperatively with local and provincial governments. Affordable housing Where appropriate, allow smaller homes including carriage homes. Expedite development applications for multi-family housing and work with neighborhoods to ensure that local residents are involved.

Encourage the construction of more rental developments, where suitable. Healthcare services I will make a CT scanner a top priority for the Mission hospital. Mission hospital needs more focused attention as the population has been growing significantly in recent years. Abbotsford hospital and Cancer Centre requires the addition of more acute care beds. The upgrade to emergency is appreciated but needs to be completed as soon as possible. PAGE 33

on government for maintaining – our courts, hospitals, public transportation, child protection agencies and mental health and addictions services, ICBC and BC Hydro have been run into the ground while the two major parties offer band-aid solutions and lip service for topical issues. This is not only recklessly irresponsible, but deeply immoral. Before we cripple our grandchildren’s grandchildren with the debt of billions more on pet projects that only serve to prop up a party and its supporters, we need to ensure proper funding and efficient management of the institutions and areas government is fundamentally responsible for.

all intrinsic to the provincial government, they have gone unattended for decades now. Number two is the cost of living. The government currently has its fingers in almost every pie and that provides an additional cost, as they take their cut in every conceivable way, thus driving up the price of everything. The most egregious offender in this regard is the carbon tax, which the BC Conservative Party has vowed to scrap from the day it was introduced. We also intend to advocate for turning ICBC into a co-operative and offering British Columbians a private option and giving BC Hydro a long look at where savings can be found. Number three is crime. We need better police funding and more emphasis on the rights of victims. Drug dealers are constantly being acquitted, dangerous sex offenders are being released in our communities and gang violence is on the rise. These are unacceptable. What is your plan to ease the highway traffic for the Fraser Valley? Will you invest in public transit options? Widening the highway? Both these initiatives need to be implemented post haste. If we look at most major metropolitan areas around the globe, trains are the answer. The West Coast Express can be expanded and major efficiencies found immediately. Highway 1 at 264th is ridiculous any time after 6AM and reveals the half-hearted measures we have seen from the establishment. Transportation corridors are essential to commerce and our prosperity and if we are going to create an economy to get us out of deficit spending and

debt, we need to focus our efforts here. What incentives would you put forward to encourage more choices in affordable housing for those in our community who are living with lower incomes? We need more housing on all levels. Affordable housing will become available when more housing does. Demand is far outpacing supply, especially given the lack of oversight when it comes to things like money laundering. The Conservative Party is dedicated to prosecuting money laundering in the system, opening up Crown land for development and reducing the regulations that are preventing an adequate number of homes to be built. The problem is supply not meeting demand and the sooner we can offer more land and easier paths to construction, the sooner housing will become more affordable. In what ways will you or your party enhance healthcare services for residents in your riding? By streamlining services, cutting bureaucracy and maximizing the resources we presently have. The auditor general has time and again been ignored and there are massive amounts of waste currently that can be better allocated.

We certainly can’t wait for the widening of Hwy 1 somewhere around 2050 to help ease our traffic issues. We have to work with all levels of government to solve these challenges. We will take a leadership role. What incentives would you put forward to encourage more choices in affordable housing for those in our community who are living with lower incomes? Finance Minister Carole James has previously introduced measures in the BC NDP budget that would address these issues, including strategy in five policy areas: increasing supply, new tax measures, encouraging other projects, punishing bad actors, as well as making rentals more affordable and more stable. We’ve already seen these policies work. In fact, the speculation and vacancy tax meant that over 11,000 more long-term rental units came on the market. The BC Liberals want to get rid of the speculation tax and that would mean these 11,000 units would be empty again. In what ways will you or your party enhance healthcare services for residents in your riding? We are already doing that. We are investing in the Abbotsford Regional Hospital, more senior care facilities and overall investment in healthcare throughout the Province. PAGE 35

by the education system. Teaching unscientific sex change indoctrination is confusing children and trampling on parental rights. Many children are now going down the dangerous path to transitioning with cross-sex hormones and life altering consequences. The schools, medical, social services, courts and government have been culpable in collaborating to bring this destructive agenda forward. In British Columbia a 14 year old girl was told by the courts that she could change to be a boy without her parent’s consent. The desperate father was told to be silent and at one point he was told he could not speak privately to a friend about this situation. The girl was given cross-sex hormones and now has permanent changes to her voice. The father continues to speak out and will be facing 40 days in jail or longer for his refusal to be silent at what the Province has done to his child. Background Questions: What is your educational background? Graduate of Mouat Secondary School, Bachelor of Arts degree from Carleton University in Ottawa and a law degree from the University of Alberta. What is your professional background? After returning from university, I started a law practice here in Abbotsford. I began my public service as a school trustee for Abbotsford. I have served the people of Abbotsford as Member of the Legislative Assembly since 1994. When in government, I was most recently the Minister of Finance and Government House Leader. I also served in various other cabinet portfolios including Minister of Health, Attorney General, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, Minister of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation, Minister of Labour and Citizens’ Services, and Minister of Forests. I continue to serve as a senior member of the opposition caucus. I am Captain in the Canadian Armed Forces Air Force Reserve. Political Questions: What community projects or organizations in (your riding) are you or have you been involved with? • In 2017, the BC Liberal government had announced funding to expand Highway 1 from Langley to Abbotsford. Unfortunately, the NDP government halted this expansion. This commitment remains a high priority for the people of Abbotsford and I will continue to advocate for the twinning of the highway.

• I led the call for a new Abbotsford Regional Hospital during the NDP government. In 2001, when the BC Liberals formed government, I made sure our hospital and cancer centre was a key priority for the new government. Now I am calling on the NDP to stop delaying the Abbotsford Hospital Emergency Expansion that was funded by the BC Liberal government in 2017.
