GET TO KNOW... YOUR CANDIDATE FOR ABBOTSFORD-MISSION
I was first elected MLA for Abbotsford-Mission in 2013 and re-elected in 2017. I have served as a member of Treasury Board, the Select Standing Committee on Public Accounts, and the Committee on Finance and Government Services, and Assistant Deputy Speaker. Through our constituency office we have assisted over 3000 families and individuals. I have also successfully secured $37 million in funding for many community organizations

(including $15 million for Mission Transitional housing). Some areas I will be focusing on: ✓ Widening Highway #1 through Langley and Abbotsford ✓ Provide funding for diagnostic equipment for Mission Hospital ✓ Completion of second Fraser River sewer pipe crossing. ✓ Focus on homelessness and addictions by improving the level of care In our community

GET TO KNOW... YOUR CANDIDATE FOR ABBOTSFORD WEST
I am asking you to ‘re-hire’ me as your representative for Abbotsford West. As a community we have accomplished a great deal working together and yet there is more to be done. Rebuilding after Covid-19 will require leadership, experience, and understanding of the challenges that families are facing, and I believe I can do the job serving the people of Abbotsford. My track record of delivering for Abbotsford has always started with the notion of working together for a common goal and I will continue to do so. Since being first elected in 1994 as your MLA, we have worked together to build the new Abbotsford Regional Hospital, the David Lede campus of care, Abbotsford airport expansion, highway interchanges, new schools, Discovery Trail and affordable housing. We helped the University of the Fraser Valley obtain its university status and secured the funding for the new courthouse. I have heard from many of you to focus on the following:
VOTE!
✓ I will follow through on expanding Highway 1 which was fully funded by the BC Liberal government in 2017 and subsequently cancelled by the NDP government. ✓ I will work to establish a light rail rapid transit line between Abbotsford and the sky train terminus in Langley. ✓ Improve and expand seniors’ care and culturally sensitive housing. ✓ Restoring the rights of farmers discriminated against by the NDP government. ✓ Directly address the crisis for condominium homeowners, who’s insurance costs have skyrocketed. ✓ Ensure that the hospital emergency room expansion, announced by the BC liberal government in 2017, which the NDP has delayed, is built immediately.

Your next go-to 30-minute pantry meal (NC) Sometimes it feels like dinner just comes around too quickly. For weeknights when you’re feeling strapped for time, there’s nothing better than being able to make your family a healthy meal using a staple ingredient that’s bound to be in the cupboard.
even dried fruit like apricots for a hint ½ hot house cucumber (medium diced) of sweetness.
Canned tuna is budget friendly, extremely versatile and wonderfully good for you. Look for sustainably sourced options like MSC certified tuna with the blue fish label. When you purchase seafood that is MSC certified, you can enjoy wild, sustainable seafood while helping to preserve the ocean.
Ingredients:
Couscous Tuna Salad Prep time: 10 mins Cook time: 10 mins Serves: 4
3 preserved grape leaves (layer leaves, roll them tightly and "chiffonade"- cut into thin strips) Dressing Ingredients:
4 oz can MSC certified tuna (broken ½ cup cider vinegar into chunks) ¼ cup grapeseed oil ¾ cup uncooked Moroccan couscous 1 tbsp lemon juice 1 cup vegetable broth 2 tbsp orange blossom honey ¼ tsp Kosher Salt Salt and pepper 2 tsp grapeseed oil Directions: ½ red bell pepper (medium diced) To make the couscous, add vegetable 3 oz seeded red Kalamata olives broth and grapeseed oil to a small saucepan; bring to a boil. Stir in the 3 oz seeded green olives couscous, cover, and remove from 2 tbsp Italian parsley (roughly heat. Let stand for five minutes, then chopped) fluff with fork, and set aside to cool.
A great quick idea is to pair the tuna with couscous. If you’ve never made the grain before, fear not, because if you can boil water, you can make couscous. Once cooked, it’s also a good leftover that keeps well in the refrigerator. Feel free to add other ingredients that you may already have 1 heirloom beefsteak tomato (me- To make the dressing, combine all dressing ingredients in a small glass like fresh spinach, spring onions or dium diced)
bowl and incorporate thoroughly. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Plate by folding together the couscous, vegetables and desired amount of dressing in a large bowl and fluff. Add the flakey chunks of tuna on top of a bed of couscous salad and drizzle remaining dressing over salad and tuna. Garnish with fresh lime wedges, a sprinkle of parsley and fresh-cracked black pepper.

My Journey to Canada: A Year in Nelson
fter spending a very exciting year at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, it was time for me to get a taste of the beautiful Kootenays in the Southern Interior of British Columbia. At that time, it was the home of a small private university in Nelson, the queen city of the Kootenays. Nelson is a lovely town of more than 10,000 people on the banks of Kootenay Lake. Notre Dame University (NDU) had students from around the globe. It was like an international campus. The faculty was also a mix of various nationalities. It had two prominent members of the South Asian community. Dr. T.S Bakshi and Dr. Darshan Singh Sahri were prominent members of the NDU Faculty. However, the student population was confined to just two students of Indo-Canadian heritage- I and another student from the Punjab. However, we never felt lonely. It was like a big international family. There were a number of students from Trinidad- Tobago, Peru, Malta, Portugal, Bolivia, Columbia, Chile, and Hawaii in addition to the ones from Alberta and BC. etc. NDU later became the Nelson campus of Castlegar based Selkirk College.
international flavour at the university, some of us formed an organization called Club International. I was given the honour of being its president. Under its auspices, we sponsored a number of very impressive functions and debates.
Nelson is a good example of small town British Columbia. It had one newspaper- Nelson Daily- and one radio station. NDU being the only postsecondary institution in town received a lot of coverage in the media. Both of these media outlets would always welcome any input from faculty and students at NDU. The atmosphere in town was also very pleasant. The surroundings were great for outdoor activities such as skiing, swimming, hiking etc. . . . I still vividly remember our hiking trips to the lovey Kokanee Glacier Park and historic towns Kaslo, New Denver, Silverton, Sandon, etc. Not very far from Nelson was a very popular Ashram nestled in a beautiful setting. I believe it is still there. Nearly every town in BC has a special place of interest. Around Nelson, it is the beautiful Kootenay Lake and a Lakeside Park along the lake. This lake is a part of the famous Columbia River system that begins in the Rocky Mountains Throughout the academic year at NDU north of Revelstoke and flows all the I stayed in the dorms (residence) on way to the Pacific Ocean near Portland, campus. MLA Candidate BC NDP - Abbotsford West IF YOU LIVE IN ABBOTSFORD, YOU KNOW THAT THE HWY 1 IS A MESS. FOR THE PEOPLE OF THE FRASER VALLEY, IT IS ONE OF THEIR TOP ISSUES IN THIS ELECTION. So, what is the solution?
ELECT
The Liberal solution is a single HOV lane that will reach us some time around 2050! We must do better. The traffic issues are affecting us now. That’s why the BC NDP has committed to expansion plans on a much faster timeline with the project completed in 2026…five years from now instead of 30. Additionally, we’re undertaking a review to look at other options such as light rail, express buses, and the full range of public transportation options. More than 60% of Abbotsford’s labour force, work outside of Abbotsford. Most get on that freeway behind me and then experience the grid lock that costs them time and money, every single day. Our economy and the livelihood of hard-working families rely on our transportation system to be efficient. I hope you’ll send me to Victoria as your Abbotsford West representative so we can keep our economy moving. Let’s keep our people, and our Province, moving! Preet Rai 604-852-8027

With interest rates so low, that highinterest savings account isn’t likely to net much over the coming months or years. Add banking fees to the equation and it’s possible you’re losing money. No-fee accounts are widely available from Canadian banks, credit unions and even retailers, and while you won’t see a credit on your statements, you may keep a lot in savings. Automated bill payment A single missed bill payment can not only cost you in interest, but may even impact your credit score. Banks and credit cards have plenty of options for setting up automated or pre-authorized bill payments to make sure you never miss a single
one. Just remember to keep an eye on the account you’re paying from and maintain enough float to cover your costs. Accounts that offer points Points cards that let you earn on everyday items are perfect for anyone looking to get more for their money. While we typically associate points with credit cards, there’s also an option for anyone who’d rather not spend on credit. The PC Money Account offers rewards on every dollar spent anywhere you shop and even gives points for bill payments too.

When it Comes to Car Accidents, What is Illegal Activity?
A major car accident can leave a driver, passenger, pedestrian or cyclist with serious injuries including broken bones, spinal cord injury that leads to paraplegia or quadriplegia, and traumatic brain injury. While personal injury lawsuits are based in the law of negligence, criminal charges and illegal activity frequently factor into ICBC claims. Entitlement to ICBC insurance coverage and the determination of fault for the accident are some of the important aspects of a personal injury claim that can be impacted by illegal activity. When it comes to car accidents, what is illegal activity?

When it comes to car accidents and illegal activity, there are other perhaps less obvious offences to be aware of, as they may impact insurance coverage, ICBC claim eligibility, and policy limits (in other words, the maximum amount of insurance that can be paid out to an accident victim). Examples include driving while prohibited, driving while your licence is suspended, driving without insurance, and failure to notify ICBC if a vehicle you own or were driving is involved in an accident that injured someone or damaged property. These offences may result in denial of ICBC coverage and can lead to an at-fault party being personally responsible for civil damages.
Driving while impaired by drugs or alcohol, street racing, and stunt driving are three well-known examples of illegal activity. These clearly dangerous driving behaviours increase the risk of car accidents and can cause significant injuries to other drivers and users of the road. Such illegal activity can lead to both criminal penalties and civil Failing to stop after a car accident consequences. The Patrika Media "All Candidates Newspaper Meet" On October 24th, B.C. residents are heading to polls. Needless to say, this election is nothing like we’ve seen before. Voters are limited in their abilities to meet with their local candidates to learn about their platforms, and similarly, candidates are limited in their abilities to campaign face to face. Therefore, the Patrika Media has organized an “All Candidates Newspaper Meet” for ridings in Abbotsford and Mission, which will inform our readers of each candidate’s platform. Some of the responses from the can-

The NDP brought in the Infant’s Act which stopped police and parents from being able to rescue their children from the lure of predators into drugs and prostitution. sterilization, arrest physical development of bones, brain, and organs and flood young bodies with hormones. Hormone Replacement trials have revealed increased cancer in some treatments. These children will be drug dependent the rest of their lives. This is similar to the “Emergency Act” where Indira Ghandi sterilized millions of young men. The Liberals have legislated that Dashmesh and MEI will also have to follow this agenda. They are using the courts to silence all opposition by hiring lawyers for children who then attack parents with legal action for trying to protect their children.

community who are living with lower incomes? Keeping people housed is vital to the stability of our community. Open businesses and let people get back to work. Quarantine sick people and let our 6 million residents continue their lives. Extend SAFER subsidies available to seniors, to the disabled and low income. Reduce red tape and encourage development. Avoid job-killing, apprenticeship destroying NDP platform of forced union membership which even threatens the existence of some unions. Encourage mixed employment of both union and private sectors to build more housing. Work with industry to become efficient, develop value added products and reduce prices for supply locally. Help students with massive loan debt enter the job market by regulating the maximum number of hours worked in areas such as nursing. This will also help avoid medical errors due to exhaustion working double shifts. Repeal legislation limiting the number of patients seen at a walk in clinic. Repeal “ten minute” doctors visits to address one symptom and replace with wholistic approach to healthcare including nutrition. Encourage more progressive care that includes chiropractic and alternative health options. Work towards standards that would allow health professionals immigrating to Canada to fast track their return to their careers. This would relieve pressure on the lack of doctors and nurses locally.

In North America we have destroyed the affordability of our housing by make housing a “store of middle class wealth”. They don’t have that problem in lots of other countries. I note that, after world war 2, when so much of the housing in Europe was destroyed, it fell upon local governments to rebuild housing and make it affordably available to its lower income and most at-risk citizens. To this day, the U.K.’s “Council housing estates” provide affordable housing for a significant portion of the citizens. Let’s follow that example and rather than save money in our houses, lets save money in our credit unions and banks.
In what ways will you or your party The Fraser Valley is woefully short on enhance healthcare services for resirapid/mass/commuter transit. dents in (your riding)? We need to get Skytrain out to Langley and then connect Chilliwack and Abbotsford to that Skytrain with light-rail or bus systems. I’m all-in for widening Hwy 1, but only if the new lanes are dedicated to buses and rapid transit, and/or to commercial vehicles only. I do NOT want to widen the highway to facilitate additional commuter car traffic. Large U.S. cities, like Los Angels, have clearly shown us that 10 lane freeways just clog up with more cars……. city planners call it “induced traffic”. What incentives would you put forward to encourage more choices in affordable housing for those in our community who are living with lower incomes?
You keep talking about “my party” but the Greens don’t “whip” my vote so I’ll advocate for whatever our community thinks is most important. Currently 40% of our provincial budget is healthcare so rather than increasing spending I wonder about changing the ways that we do things. Like totally and utterly reworking the way we utilise hospital emergency departments by diverting people to clinics. And I am concerned about our aging population because our elderly citizens consume the vast majority of our healthcare services. What can we do better and more efficiently with our elder care? Maybe things like enabling our elderly to stay at home longer before they go into long term care homes.

A new direction or new position taken by somebody else could make you feel left out in some way. It could also be that they will become more assertive in a subtle way when it comes to commitments expected of you. This could make you realise that the time has come for you to reassess your own situation up to mid November.
The opportunity to come to an agreement can arise but you need to be prepared for the other party to either change their mind or want to alter something about it, not that far down the track. For this reason you should not take any chances, hoping for the best. There is too much that is not obvious just yet, so be patient.

Something you have needed to be detailed about since late September can now reach a turning point in which you could realise a more balanced way of creating a well-structured situation. It can be a challenge to ensure you are able to maintain some level of enjoyment when a lot of pressure is applied for just the opposite.
Attempting to put something new in place at home or in relation to family matters can generate reactions you didn’t necessarily expect. It will certainly bring things out into the open and you will know what you are dealing with. Not that this needs to daunt you or put you off. You are quite capable of creating ways around it.
There could be something from the past that you will consider re-establishing especially if you feel present ideas will be difficult to carry forward in the future. The amount of time and work something generates may get you thinking about better ways around it. This might need to happen in stages rather than all at once.
Matters involving finances may need to take a new direction. This might be generated as a result of greater insight as to someone else’s expectations. You need to resist any pressure to take risks. It will be through you seeking out information for yourself that you will eventually gain a sense of peace and security.
The New Moon this week falls into your own sign. It will encourage you to look at the way your life has become structured, especially in the last 3 years and its value to you personally. Anything you think needs changing doesn’t have to be acted on instantly but it is important you make some decisions by the end of the year.
Don’t be surprised to find yourself changing your mind on something you thought was a certainty since late September. This could have a lot to do with matters that are out of your hands. Best just to step back and see what presents itself up to mid November. It will be from then until early December decisions can become final.

Any new directions taking place that involves a group of people or perhaps a friend could certainly present some challenges. Amongst them can be some similarity to something that has happened before. If this entails any risk to financial security you need to tread carefully. Be careful of convincing yourself just because you want it.
You could take a new approach to something that was important to accomplish, especially if you have experienced greater personal pressure than you originally anticipated. Generating more time for pleasure in the future could now become a priority. Not that all responsibility will be dropped but it can be tempered.
It can seem there is a driving force to set new goals for the future though exactly how that can be managed will not be clear. You could gain some insight into the expectations of somebody else and opportunities this could provide for you. Being in a position to move forward and make definite decisions won’t come until early December.
You could feel your priorities are not being considered when it comes to the desires of somebody else. They could feel it is time to make a new start or move forward, especially if money is involved in some way. You are not in a powerful position when it comes to resisting and you need to be sure you are not being unrealistic.
