Vax for BC launches to get more people vaccinated, recognize pandemic heroes Working with health authorities throughout British Columbia, the Province is making it easier than ever for people to get vaccinated with the launch of Vax for BC, the next step in the Province’s campaign to help as many eligible people as possible get vaccinated. “With more than 80% of eligible people in B.C. vaccinated with their first dose and more than 60% fully vaccinated, we have made tremendous progress in our vaccine rollout,” said Adrian Dix, Minister of Health. “The next few weeks is a great opportunity for everyone not yet fully vaccinated to take advantage of the number of Vax for BC opportunities throughout B.C.” Beginning on Tuesday, July 27, 2021, and lasting throughout the month of August, community events, vax vans and mobile clinics will be up and running in dozens of communities in B.C. to get more people vaccinated with their first and second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. While registration and booking using the provincial Get Vaccinated system is still encouraged, these events will allow eligible people to walk-in and receive a vaccine without a scheduled appointment.

people in our province who have taken this step, not just for themselves, but for their larger community.” Along with regional events held by health authorities, Vax for BC will also include the first provincewide Walk-in Wednesday. On Aug. 4, 2021, clinics throughout the province will reserve approximately 20,000 doses for walk-in vaccinations for anyone 12 years and older still needing their first dose or people eligible to receive their second dose. As more British Columbians step up and get vaccinated through Vax for BC, the Province will gradually refocus its vaccine efforts from mass clinics onto programs targeting the hardest to reach people. In the weeks ahead, B.C.’s vaccine strategy will shift toward more local public health clinics, community outreach efforts, mobile programs and pop-up clinics. These will take place within specific communities and populations throughout the province, where the need is greatest. “I want to express my gratitude to the health authority teams and community partners for their exceptional efforts in delivering our vaccination program throughout the province,” said Dr. Penny Ballem, B.C.’s immunization lead. “And during the next push, there will be even more convenient opportunities for people to get a life-saving vaccine to protect yourself and those around you.”

In addition to drop-in events, Vax for BC will kick off an opportunity to recognize how far British Columbia has come together, providing a chance for people to share messages and notes of gratitude to pandemic heroes over the last 18 months. British Columbians are encouraged to share written messages Data from the BC Centre of Disease online, in their windows at home and Control (BCCDC) shows that less in-person at vaccination locations. than 5% of COVID-19 cases from “The rollout of mass COVID-19 vac- June 15 to July 15 were among fully cinations for B.C. has been the effort vaccinated people. New grants to promote reconciliation by educating people about B.C.’s past Indigenous communities, local governments and heritage organizations in British Columbia will soon have access to funding for projects that spotlight the Province’s diverse cultural heritage. “It has been 150 years since B.C. joined confederation, but the history of this place stretches back to time immemorial,” said Josie Osborne, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “To heal and move forward together, it is important that everyone sees themselves reflected in B.C.’s heritage and cultural programs. This is an opportunity for people to learn more about B.C.’s colonial past and to honour the resilience both Indigenous and non-Indigenous marginalized communities have shown. Let’s reflect on our whole story and what we can do together to make B.C. an even better place for generations to come.” Administered through the First Peoples’ Cultural Foundation and Heritage BC, the new, $30-million 150 Time Immemorial grant program will fund projects that educate people about B.C.’s colonial past, advance reconciliation and promote inclusivity and diversity for the province’s future. Indigenous communities, local governments and not-for-profit heritage organizations with an Indigenous or heritage mandate are eligible to submit applications starting in fall 2021. “The First Peoples’ Cultural Foundation and the First Peoples’ Cultural Council work in tandem on the revitalization of Indigenous languages,” said Lorna Wánosts’a7 Williams, chair, First Peoples’ Cultural Foundation. “We turn now to revitalizing our cultural heritage by focusing on the documentation, archiving and sharing the precious stories, knowledge and wisdom of the Elders and Knowledge Keepers for future generations to come.”

P a u l Gravett, executive dir e c t o r, Herit a g e B C , said, “ W e think of heritage as something in the past, but really it is the recognition of who we are and want to be. We look at the past to acknowledge important events and great sacrifices, and to measure our achievements and our failings. This is why the values of reconciliation, diversity and resilience are so important to heritage today. Based on these values, this unique funding program allows us to reflect on the past 150 years and time immemorial and as we work together for a stronger, more inclusive future.” The program will support projects in B.C. communities focused on reconciliation and building resiliency throughout the next 150 years and beyond, honouring B.C.’s diverse cultural heritage. “We are at a pivotal moment in history,” said Melanie Mark, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport. “We must acknowledge our past and continue to move forward in the inclusive spirit of true and lasting reconciliation. These grants will help communities further define B.C.’s diversity by sharing our many cultures. I look forward to seeing all of the events and projects that take shape and learning how they will enrich our communities for a brighter future.” The 150 Time Immemorial grant program will open for an initial intake in fall 2021. Funding to get Lower Mainland sport back into full swing

total of 86 Lower Mainland sport organizations are receiving funding to help them recover from the pandemic and welcome a safe return to play.

$7,500 to non-profit sports organizations to assist with expenses such as insurance, administrative costs, rent, storage costs and equipment essential to providing sports programs.

“As B.C. makes its way through Step 3 of the Province’s restart plan, I want to thank the sport and recreational organizations for the central role they play in bringing people back together and in returning to the activities we love,” said Melanie Mark, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport. “Volunteers have done an amazing job adapting to the pandemic. Our government is proud to support these community-based sport organizations as they work to get people back in the game.”

“Sports and physical activity benefit our communities in so many ways and help contribute to our collective wellness,” said Dan Coulter, MLA for Chilliwack. “Through this second round of funding, we are doing even more to ensure local sport organizations weather the storm, maintain jobs and set people up for success as we move towards the final steps of B.C.’s restart plan.”

There are more than 4,100 local sports organizations in B.C., many of which have faced financial challenges due to the absence of registration fees, event revenues and sponsorships because of the COVID-19 limits on gatherings for public safety. The Local Sport Relief Fund provides grants of up to

This is the second allocation of funds for local sport organizations thanks to additional financial support provided by the Government of Canada. In this round, the Province is disbursing more than $1 million in grants to 214 organizations throughout B.C. In January 2021, the provincial government provided $1.5 million to 288 local sport organizations during the first funding allocation.

“It’s thrilling to be able to move forward in this province to a careful return to games, competition, and recreational activity,” said Charlene Krepiakevich, CEO, viaSport. “COVID-19 took a tremendous toll on sport organizations across this province. This funding acknowledges the need to financially support local sport organizations to ensure they are ready to help ramp up capacity as sport returns to communities.” The Province is focused on enhancing opportunities for a more inclusive, diverse and affordable future for sport. Local Sport Relief Fund grants awarded in both rounds prioritized organizations serving under-represented populations, including girls

and women, persons with disabilities, underprivileged youth, racially diverse and LGBTQI2S communities. “We are thankful to receive this financial support,” said Andrea Laycock, executive director, Fraser Valley Youth Soccer Association. “We are working hard to ensure we can provide a great recreational option and experience for youth in our community. This funding will help us meet costs as we kickstart our programming and aim for this goal.” PAGE 15

Young Guns Weightlifting Club is a FREE award-winning fitness program for youth located in The Fraser Valley. It was started by Pavi Toor and his two teenage sons in September 2019. Youth in our community need to get pound exercises such as front squats moving. There are numerous physical and deadlifts. Also working out with and mental health benefits to exercis- a group is more motivating than lifting weights alone. We reserve the entire gym so we could do circuit training and not wait around for equipment to become available. Major problem at local gyms during peak hours. Also youth feel more safe working out when it’s just them exercising, especially the girls in ing. The club was created to provide our program.rking o youth free weightlifting training so they could learn how to lift weight safely and get results. The issue with weightlifting is the youth need to work with a certified trainer or they could get hurt. Many beginners don’t even know which exercises to begin with often neglecting large muscle groups. It could take many months to learn proper technique for com-

profits and small businesses. We share many fitness tips so others can learn from h o m e . We are currently full but if a youth wants to try a session they are asked to contact us via Instagram or at (778) 3440713.

In 2020, Young Guns Weightlifting Club was nominated for the Not for Profit Award by the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce. Later on that year they became a social enterprise. In 2021, the program won the Fraser Valley Cultural Young Guns WC trains four times a Diversity Award for Innovative Initiaweek and has certified trainers who tive (Small Organization). coach up to 12 youth per session. A limited number of donuts are made and sold on Fridays. A six pack of donuts sells for $20. Each donut is cheaper than a medium latte. Bam Sidhu of Aerie Insurance Solutions Delivers Game Ball for Fraser Valley Bandits Bam Sidhu of Aerie Insurance Solutions delivers the game ball for the Fraser Valley Bandits game at Abbotsford Centre on Sunday July 25th. Aerie Insurance Solutions sponsored the event. We are finally here! Aerie Insurance Solutions officially opened doors on July 1st, 2021. We will be hosting an Open House soon with details to

follow. It has been a journey to say the least. The journey was all about establishing the brand and making sure we could support it. In supporting our own brand, we found great opportunity in supporting the community at large. Last week, we had the pleasure of sponsoring our very own professional basketball team here in the Valley. As the Fra-

ser Valley Bandits get set represent British Columbia in the 2021 CEBL Playoffs, we are proud to be a part of their journey and to have brought the energy of the community to the arena. Building links with the organizations within our community has truly been a great experience, and is something Aerie Insurance Solutions will continue to do.

Thank you to my family, friends, and colleagues. I could have not done it without your support. Watch for our Open House date. Aerie Insurance Solutions is here to stay! Come SOAR with us! Bam Sidhu, CFP Aerie Insurance Solutions Inc. PAGE 19

My idea is to not let image take over work I want to do : Tamannaah Bhatia Actress Tamannaah Bhatia has been acting for 16 years now. She has won a large fan base as one of the top glam queens of the South, and has also impressed as an actress of substance with select roles. She feels her idea is to not let any particular image dictate the kind of work she wants to do. Tamannah made her acting debut in 2005 at the age of 15 with the Hindi film "Chand Sa Roshan Chehra". The same year, she made her Telugu debut with "Sri" and the following year she made her Tamil debut with "Kedi". "I have evolved as a person and at every different point of time. I have continuously worked, so for me, most of my life is divided

into the films I have worked on. I enjoy it. For me, it is as new as it was on the first day," Tamannaah said. She feels the process of breaking an image has become challenging now. "In fact, it is a lot more challenging now because I feel like there is a constant need of unlearning and you are making something that has already been created in terms of an image, and moving forward my idea is to not let an image take over the kind of work I want to do. I want the work to kind of precede that," she said. Tamannah, who was recently seen in the web-series "November Story" on Disney+ Hotstar VIP, is now gearing up for the Telugu remake of the Hindi thriller "Andhadhun". The Telugu version is directed by Merlapaka Gandhi.

I don't work for stardom : Badshah

He is among the top rappers in the country but Badshah insists he doesn't work for the stardom. It's also the reason, he adds, why the fear of losing stardom never bothers him. "I don't work for the stardom. I work for the music that belongs in my veins and I know I will never lose that. It's God's gift to me," claims Badshah said . Life a cruise right now, of course. His run of chartbusters over the years has included 'Mercy', 'Paagal', 'DJ waley babu', 'Abhi toh party shuru hui hai', 'Kar gayi chull','She move it like', 'Wakhra swag', 'Garmi' and 'Genda phool',

and continues. He has appeared in Forbes India's Celebrity 100 in 2017, 2018 and 2019 as one of the highest-paid celebrities in India. Controversies around plagiarism charges and purchase of fake views, which hounded him last year, have also been forgotten. At 36, the musician who started out in 2006 with the group Mafia Mundeer, only sees his fan base burgeoning. Talking about the number he thinks has been a gamechanger, Badshah, whose real name is Aditya Prateek Singh Sisodia, diplomatically tags all of them as 'tide-turners'.

Yami Gautam to play journalist in her next film Understanding skin and honesty of a character is important : Shanaya Kapoor

Actor Sanjay Kapoor's daughter Shanaya Kapoor is ready to enter Bollywood soon. The 21-year-old is naturally excited."I'm extremely excited and looking forward to shooting the film. I have been doing several readings with my director, and been having lots of discussions on my character brief and breakdown of the scenes," says the new kid on the B-Town block, in an interview. Shanaya's first film is directed by Shashank Khaitan and, like the debut projects of many industry kids lately, will be produced by Karan Johar's Dharma Productions. She is cast opposite actors Gurfateh Pirzada and Laksh Lalwani in the film, a rom-com love triangle. The debutant actress has been preparing for the film before it goes on the floor after lockdown gets over. "I think understanding the skin and honesty of a character is important," she says. Before her debut film, Shanaya worked as an assistant director on the Jhanvi Kapoor-starrer "Gunjan Saxena" to understand filmmaking and how film sets function. Her father Sanjay Kapoor has lately been a regular on the digital space, he was seen in "Lust Stories", "The Gone Game" and "The Last Hour", and has "Finding Anamika" coming up. Shanaya picks her favourite from her father's recent works. "In my opinion, one of my favourites of my father is Lust Stories. The character my father played had layers, and I think it was cracked extremely well!" she says. Sanjay featured in Dibakar Banerjee's segment of the anthology film alongside Manisha Koirala and Jaideep Ahlawat.

Yami Gautam, who tied the knot with director Aditya Dhar last month, is revelling in the joys of matrimony. But soon, it will be work calling the actor. Gautam is expected to begin shooting for Pink (2016) director Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury’s yet-untitled next in August. A source reveals, “The film was supposed to be shot in Kolkata and Purulia in May, but the plans went awry due to the second wave of the pandemic. Now that the situation is improving, Aniruddha wants to kick off the shoot in Kolkata in

August. A major portion of the story is set in the city.” True to Chowdhury’s hard-hitting style of cinema, the movie will examine the crimes in journalism that sometimes go unnoticed. “Yami had loved the script right at the narration. She will play a journalist who propels the narrative forward. She is deeply invested in the project, and has had several Zoom calls with the director over the past few months to understand the finer details of the story,” adds the source.

If each one does his bit, won’t have suffering : Tisca Chopra With theatres having downed their shutters for the better part of 2020 as well as this year, those employed at cinemas have faced acute financial strain. Tisca Chopra is lending a helping hand to the community by hosting a ration donation drive — which will cater to 1,000 workers who have been rendered jobless amid the pandemic — at PVR Citi Mall in Andheri today. “I always think of Cinema Paradiso [1988] when I think of theatre workers. In small towns, cinemas are perhaps the only source of entertainment, and the workers are a part of the lives of the locals. They have been out of work all this while. So, I felt we must reach out in whatever way we can,” says Chopra, adding that the basmati rice brand, India Gate, has collaborated with her to distribute essentials among those in

need. Over the next few weeks, the drive will be conducted in different parts of Maharashtra, thus reaching out to a wider section of people. While she had initially started Tisca’s Table with chef Vikas Khanna to facilitate conversations between bright minds, Chopra has of late used the platform to extend support to the marginalised communities. “If each one of us does our bit, we may not have too much suffering in terms of food and essentials. [Media entrepreneur] Gautam Thakker has helped us set up this initiative with the theatre workers’ association, and exhibitor Akshaye Rathi has ensured that food reaches all over Maharashtra, including the Vidarbha region. We want to expand Tisca’s Table to welcome international funding, thus enabling relief work.”

Plans you had put in place could be disrupted by unforseen circumstances. This may force you to consider other ways or opportunities that will allow you to cut back on some of the expense. Someone else could decide it is time to move on from any situation that has been primarily social because it is time to become more serious.

You can come up with some inventive ideas or solutions to any problems you may have been trying to sort out. This could involve analysing your level of responsibility and whether you think this is what you really want. Any risks you feel you want to take from now to mid August need to have a practical undertone.

Taking it easy will be difficult as frustrations can arise when it comes to obligations. This can involve finances – it is no time to take any risks and hope for the better. You may not like to look of the level of responsibility that could be attached to situations you want to develop in the future. It might be time to trim down plans.

You could begin to see your future from a different perspective and this could be because you can see how something you have always wanted but perhaps thought impossible, could be accomplished. It can be a matter of altering your priorities and not attempting to get too much done at once. Take one step at a time in your mind.

It is better to handle things for yourself – greater clarity can begin to emerge. You need to work out where you have support and where you don’t. This will require you to pay close attention in relation to any discussions and then go away and think about it. That way you will become aware of those that won’t fit in with your wishes

Venus, the planet of peace, balance and harmony moves into your sign where it will remain until 16th August. This can immediately make you aware of any areas where too much is expected of you, or what may become too much to handle in the future. It will be up to you to lower the level. You may not be listened to, so persist.

Take action on the initial steps necessary to The ideas someone else has for the long

effort to mid August to alter any routines that seem to have established themselves that have become too much. You need to be authoritative.

to obligations that could be tied into something that seems more free and easy or pleasure based. It is better to narrow down what needs to take priority.

Don’t be tempted to increase your commitments – you need to go the other way to mid August. Someone else can be full of ideas that will put more pressure on you rather than on them. They certainly have faith in your ability to create the structure and to put the details in place but this is no reason to wear yourself out.

You are in a good position, from now to mid August, to make future plans with a sense of peace about what is realistic and manageable. This may encourage you to immediately drop some ideas you have been considering. Your ability to tune into what someone else is really looking for puts you in a good position to ask the right questions.

Someone else may begin to become mysterious, which could ongoing until mid August. You could feel they are acting out one thing but feeling something else. This is not a time to spend without thinking. You need to analyse the need to do this and how this might affect regular commitments you already have in place.

You could feel luckier than you have in while because of things going your way without difficulty. You can expect greater response from others from now to mid August, though there could be a level of caution attached. You could feel you have seen another side of a person this week. Take your time in processing this.
