FROM THE EDITOR Raman S. Dhillon
With Elections, COVID-19, and health experts warning of yet again another wave of the pandemic for the winter months; many are probably wondering what else 2020 will bring before the year is officially over. The year 2020 will forever be remembered as the year COVID-19 hit and caused a global economic crisis. Leaders from all over the globe struggled to come up with safety regulations and ways to adjust to a pandemic world. Social distancing became the new norm and many were forced to rely on technology to keep the economy running. The pandemic crisis caused a high demand in transportation in harder impacted areas. With the holiday season just around the corner and many consumers having taken their shopping needs online, the high demand for transportation shows just how important our fellow truck drivers are to the economy. If there is one thing many have learned through this year’s experience other than just how important our truckers are, it is how technology is our future and how we must embrace it and not fear for the change
it will bring but learn how to evolve with it. During the pandemic, the use of digital format skyrocketed. Consumers turned to technology to get things done. A lot of businesses turned to going completely online when their businesses were forced to shut down due to the COVID-19 outbreaks. Advances in technology are meant to help us. Many trucking companies are going through technology changes which will increase safety and bring more efficient results. Advancement in technology brings excitement in some while it leaves others a bit skeptical whether or not these changes will make a positive impact. This year has been filled with so many hurdles for everyone. Health experts in the past have warned we were not ready for a pandemic if one were to happen and they were right. No one was ready for this but we can all learn from our past mistakes as we move forward into a new year. Other countries have gotten COVID-19 under control and we could too if we learn from them. Before we enter 2021, the staff of Punjabi Trucking would like to wish everyone a safe and Happy Holidays!

Futuristic Autonomous Pod Like Trucks Are Coming To America
A
s if leaping from the screen of some science fiction movie, futuristic podlike vehicles from Swedish autonomous truck company Einride will soon be rolling down America’s roads. In partnership with tire maker Bridgestone, Einride is launching a pilot program in the U.S. Unlike other autonomous vehicle (AV) manufacturers such as Daimler, TuSimple, and Waymo, who have put AV technology in conventional-looking cars and trucks, Einride has designed a cab less electric freight carrier without mirrors, windows, or doors that resemble something out of Star Wars. Gone are steering wheels, gas pedals, and, of course, drivers. These robot pods are simply tasked with shipping cargo long distances on trucking routes. Remote controllers will guide the pods from a command center. In Sweden, these pods are already carrying goods between two warehouses for Swedish logistics company DB Schenker. Einride is the brainchild of Swedish entrepreneur and former Volvo engineer Robert Falck, who holds degrees in both mechanical engineering and economics. Falck envisions a future where automated, electric vehicles, much like those that are already toiling in modern factories, carry freight on

public roads. Falck said, “Without a cab, the pod weighs less overall than a comparative electric truck, is more aerodynamic, and has more room for cargo on board. This translates to better range and load capacity than a truck designed for a human driver.” Falck sees the current model using diesel-powered tractors and trailers as unsustainable, partly because of the environmental damage he sees being done by CO2 emissions. The goal of Einride, according to Falck, is to “offer transport intensive companies a business model for going sustainable.” Einride recently scored a $10 million public funding haul and plans to further develop autonomous electric vehicles, from the AET 1 to the AET 4. These vehicles can carry up to 16 tons at differing speeds with the AET 1 working at slower speeds for delivery to ports and warehouses. It has a speed of about 20 mph and can travel between 80 and 110 miles. The AET 4 has a speed of 55 mph and can carry local freight. Falck said, “We can already see strong traction from the market to start using autonomous and electric transport. The benefits are clear.”

KeepTruckin’s Long Anticipated Smart Load Board Is Now Available
D
rivers with KeepTruckin (KT) accounts can now utilize, free of charge, the company’s new Smart Load Board, an electronic freight matching system. The newly introduced software is built directly into the company’s fleet management platform. Drivers, however, should be aware that the board will work better when paired with KT’s electronic logging device (ELD). KT boasts that the new board will allow drivers to access “thousands of loads from trusted industry partners that can’t be found on other boards.” Information such as destination, rates, weight and other data can be gleaned from the board to make it easier for drivers to find the right load. Partners include many of the “largest and most innovative brokers in North America, including Echo Global Logistics, Uber Freight, Convoy, Edge Logistics, Bennett, EPES Logistics, Page Trucking, Keller Freight Solutions, and any broker powered by Parade.” KT’s product manager Aman Shahi recommends that drivers use the board in conjunction with the company’s (ELD) to create seamless communication. www.punjabitruckingusa.com
Although drivers not using the KT ELD can still access the board, the relevance of load recommendations may not be appropriate. In fact, KT collects data from its ELD to help match drivers with available loads. Shahi said, “Anybody can use the Smart Load board, but we’re really able to drive value for this product if they’re on our ELD—the power and impact on the day-to-day operations is much greater if you’re on the ELD.” Shahi stressed that KT does not share data with brokers unless a driver uses the “book now” button on the app which will match a driver’s availability with freight. KT gives drivers full control and guarantees that “consenting carriers who move loads for specific brokerages can proactively choose their KT location information, which will allow the brokerage to access it specifically for the duration of the load being moved—and no longer.” Shahi also indicated that KT has begun to hire back staff that had been part of layoffs as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. He stressed the company is committed to protecting customer data. November & December 2020

Cummins Introduces EPA Compliant 2021 X12 And X15 Series Engines Rhea Randhawa
B
uilt on the architecture of their 2017 models, heavy-duty engine designer and manufacturer Cummins Inc. recently announced it’s 2021 Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) emissions compliant X12 and X15 series engines which are in limited production. Full production of the new engines from the Columbus, Ohio-based company is
depend on Cummins’ agreements with its OEM partners. He said, “We have really designed them around absolutely delivering uptime, total cost of ownership, and ease of operation.” The X15 and X12 include the Efficiency and Performance Series. Cummins claims its “industry-leading” oil drain interval (ODI) will increase with both of the new X12 and X15 engine
to choose powertrain features that had been previously unavailable above 500 horsepower. These include the new “SmartCoast” feature, Predictive Cruise Control, and Predictive Road Speed Governor. For powertrain specifications, the Cummins PowerSpec Web is accessible anywhere on multiple platforms. The PowerSpec is an “accessible website
slated for the beginning of next year. “Cummins’ 2021 heavy-duty products were designed with three core deliverables in mind: increased uptime, better overall total cost of ownership, and improved drivability,” said Cummins Vice President Brett Merritt. “By delivering on these focus areas, Cummins’ products will offer better performance for the customer’s bottom line.” Merritt also made a point of saying that the new engines would carry only a small price increase which would
series. Drivers averaging between 5 mpg and 7 mpg will see their ODI extended by 10,000 miles. To save time, Cummins will also schedule fuel filter and oil changes at the same time. Cummins says the new engines will be more fuel-efficient with as much as a 1.5% increase in the X15 Efficiency Series. This is on top of the 2020 X-15’s improvements which saw an increase of 3.5% in fuel economy. In addition, the X15 Performance Series will give customers the ability
resource for complete powertrain “spec’ing” for Cummins engines in the on-highway market,” according to its website. Its advantages include “a gearing calculator, complete descriptions of electronic features with video content, instructions on how to optimize parameter settings, additional resources that help with the spec’ing process.” PowerSpec is available free of charge for Windows 8.1 or 10 through any Cummins dealer.

Are The Repairs Worth It?
Pash Brar
I
have encountered multiple clients receiving huge repair bills for their trucks in the last few months. The invoices from mechanics are so high, that they cost more than what the truck is worth. Truck maintenance and repairs are inevitable and unavoidable. A truck must be kept in good working order and proper inspections must be done to keep it on the road. This ensures everyone is safe and money can be made. But when the repairs cost more than the market value of your truck, do you pay that amount, or get a newer truck instead? One client approached me to finance his previously paid off truck and explained he needed the money to repair his truck and pay the mechanic. When I looked at the repair invoices, they were triple the value of the truck. An independent appraisal was done on the truck and it confirmed the truck was no where near the value of the repairs, and even after the repairs were completed the value would never reach the invoiced amount. The bank of course only offered 14
November & December 2020
the amount of the appraisal and the client was stuck. The only money available was the equity in his home, so the client took out a second mortgage to pay for the truck repairs. I also recently had a mechanic who fitted a brand new motor in to a used truck. A client agreed to buy the truck, but first wanted other cosmetic work done. He requested the mechanic get the body redone, paint it all, add chrome and lights and make it into a show truck. The mechanic did so and added all the extra work done to the sale invoice. The client thought he could finance the whole thing. Unfortunately, all the extra work done put the invoice to almost the price of a brand new truck. The bank of course refused to finance the full amount and would only pay for the market value of the truck. The bank even suggested they buy a new truck with full warranty instead. The client wanted only the used truck and had to give a huge down payment and huge payments for the first year to bring the value of the truck to
its market value. The client was warned, if there is an accident or anything happens to the truck in that first year, the loss will be their own because insurance will never cover the full amount he paid for the truck. I spoke to an insurance adjuster who handles heavy equipment accident claims and he confirmed the same. More and more truckers are paying too much into trucks that need to be retired and put to salvage, which are leading to significant financial losses. Trucking is a business and it is up to the trucker whether they want to repair a truck, sell it as is, or salvage it to buy something else. The insurance adjuster confirmed one person he knows only keeps trucks that are under warranty. Once the warranty is running out, the truck is replaced with another truck under warranty. His accountant advised him to do this and I believe it is good advice. He has never experienced any significant losses, so it is sound business advice. Is overpaying for a used truck worth it when its near the end of its life expectancy? www.punjabitruckingusa.com
INDUSTRY NEWS
When insurance companies look at a claim on these trucks, they pull comparable truck values and use formulas to determine the value of the truck. A rebuild does add some value yes, depending on where it was done, like a dealership, and if new parts were used, how many miles were on the new motor etc., but the added value will never be anywhere near the actual amount you paid for it. An example of an argument the insurance company hears is “I paid $40,000 for this rebuild and $40,000 for this truck, so give me $80,000 because that is the value.” No; that is not how it works. Unfortunately, its NOT the value. Just because you paid that, it doesn’t mean you will get that same amount from insurance. Insurance company’s will advise you to “prove your loss”. Showing 50+ pages of maintenance bills will not add value to your claim. Those bills just show you maintained your truck like you were supposed to. You can spend literally months arguing, and in the meantime you are not working. So now add your loss of income sitting at home to the equation and any lawyer fees you may have incurred. You will realize that maybe you should have taken that first offer and just gone back to work, because that is all
you ended up getting anyways. It all boils down to educating yourself. An average engine lasts about 750,000 miles. It’s not a surprise, but a guarantee that this truck needs a new motor soon. If you want to buy a truck with a 600,000 miles, you need to first realize the value of a truck in that condition. It should be discounted heavily. Do not overpay. Next, you need a contingency plan. You need to have enough money saved up to repair that truck plus a few months of income to cover downtime while you wait for the rebuild. That amount can range from $30-50,000 or more. You also need to realize that if something happens to the truck once the work is completed, you will NOT get the amount you just spent on that truck back from insurance. So, the decision is yours. Do you buy this truck in the first place, and do you fix it and possibly take a loss later? It could also take up to a year or more to payoff what you put in. Now you’re in a negative income situation. Is that worth it? You truck to make money and now money isn’t being made. Some get themselves in a situation where they experience a loss and may end up owing that loss amount to a finance
company. This can lead to carrying the debt over to another truck. For example, they may have taken a $20,000 loss on a truck and owe that amount to a finance company. They don’t have the cash to pay the loss, so the finance company adds that existing debt to another truck because they want their money back with interest. Now you are once again in the same negative equity situation. You are owing more than what the value of the truck is. This is a vicious cycle and unfortunately a lot of truckers are stuck in exactly this situation. When you work for yourself and get into a tough financial predicament, there is only one person to blame. Going forward, overpaying trucks is not a situation that will disappear anytime soon. There are many who stand to gain from the demise of a misinformed trucker; the seller of the truck, the mechanic doing the repairs, and the finance company. I don’t think a trucker is stupid for getting stuck in these situations, but they may be naïve. As an owner operator you are running your own small business, so your job is to educate yourself on every aspect of your business. If you have not educated yourself, you can only blame yourself.

TRUCKING EDUCATION
Paves the way to Safer Travels
A
s long as the wheels of the trucks are rolling, the livelihood of millions is blooming and all thanks to the trucking industry as it helps in smooth movement of the American economy. But in order to keep the process going many factors are to be taken into consideration and one of them is the importance of educational training in this industry. Driving a truck is not easy, it is not as simple as driving other four-wheelers. The fact that it has 18-wheels itself makes truck driving far more
different and complex. It requires good organizational, mechanical, and driving skills. The fact that the truck drivers must be on road for thousands of miles, itself is risk taking as roads are prone to accidents. Lack of knowledge and training in handling, driving, and 18

managing trucks results in severe impacts that can hamper the trucking process. The idea and purpose of education is to give truckers the skill and knowledge they need to drive trucks and to keep up with the fast-changing trucking technology and be safe drivers on the road. There are many factors that a truck driver must consider. Apart from being a good driver a trucker must have knowledge about the vehicle’s mechanical, transmission and brake systems. His ability to balance cargo loads and managing timing and service guidelines are all a part of trucking education. The trucking industry is coming forward and serving as an educational link between the drivers and the trucks. They are following a blended learning approach which involves the use of both online and offline learning tools. Different forms of training are required and available such as Hours of service training, driver vehicle inspection training, GHS training, defensive driving www.punjabitruckingusa.com

training, distracted driving training, eye safety training, and many more. Many of these training services are available online for free and are downloadable Some of the services available in form of CD-drive, hard-drive, etc. are paid. Other widely used educational training gadgets like pamphlets, instruction manuals, PowerPoints, etc. are also useful. Some of the companies also provide video lessons and in-person training classes in order to deliver the information in every possible way. Even though all this stuff may seem hard, but the outcome of education and training is fruitful. Truckers need to change their mind-set about training and need to understand that it helps in improving their performance, boosting their morale, and gives them a sense of safety and satisfaction. It is a step towards progressive trucking where the the driver knows all about his truck and can effectively handle adversities on the road. Apart from making on-road judgements, training also helps him in monitoring alerts, tracking, and operating GPS systems, handling communication tools, and maintaining records. Training also helps the trucking organizations in better understanding the loopholes in the system, which in turn guides them in addressing and handling different situations properly. This consistency in the system results in increased productivity and enhanced reputation of the company through the combined efforts of both the trucker and the company. Education and training can thus make the lives of all involved in the trucking industry simpler, safer, and easier.

FEMA Enters Into An Agreement With A Private Sector To Streamline The Production Of Medical Supplies
A
uthorized under the Defense Production Act, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is encouraging industry to voluntarily take part in a supply chain program that would better coordinate the production and distribution of important health care essentials in order to mitigate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The voluntary agreement, titled the Manufacture and Distribution of Critical Healthcare Resources Necessary to Respond to a Pandemic program gives private sector companies the ability to share information with the government and between industrial competitors that might normally run askew of federal antitrust laws. The Defense Production Act allows the federal government to mobilize private industry to produce items that the president deems of utmost importance in the interest of national defense. FEMA representative Cynthia Spishak said, “It’s crucial that the government and the private sector continue to partner and collaborate as much as possible so we can improve from our collective lessons learned in the last year and start to prepare for what may come.” Critics have consistently chastised the Trump administration’s slow and seemingly disorganized response to a health crisis which has devastated the U.S. economy even though President Trump declared a national emergency back in March. An agency with the Department of Homeland Security, FEMA has, however, been active with several programs to procure needed medical supplies, including Project Airbridge which chartered more than 250 freighters to transport medicines and personal protective equipment (PPE). FEMA has also worked to supply states hit hard by the pandemic with PPE, respirators, and even the establishment of field hospitals. Despite those efforts, state governors have often had to compete on the free market for essential items. Cooperation between private industry and the government will be managed by www.punjabitruckingusa.com
FEMA’s Office of Business, Industry, and Infrastructure and hopes to take the “collaboration to the next level.” Not only will this voluntary agreement be important for the current pandemic, but the five-year plan will hopefully act as a blueprint for future threats to the U.S.

Toyota, Hino To Produce Class 8 Fuel-Cell Truck in North America
22
November & December 2020
I
n a joint effort first introduced last spring, Toyota Motor Corp. and Hino have committed to manufacturing a North American version of its heavy-duty fuel-cell truck which is currently being developed in Japan. Road testing is set for 2021. Hino’s Senior Vice President Glenn Ellis said, “Expanding upon our proud heritage of the Hino powertrain, Toyota Fuel Cell Technology offers our customers a commercially viable, extendedrange, the zero-emissions vehicle in the near term.” Hino trucks have a long history in the United States, having first put its FF175 on the road back in 1983. It’s partnership with Toyota makes sense as designers continue to work on zero emission heavyduty trucks. Ellis continued, “Hino shares a common focus with Toyota when it comes to durability, reliability, and innovation with the customer at the center of the design, which makes this collaboration a gamechanger.” The new prototype, labeled the Hino FCET is based on the company’s XL series and will utilize Toyota’s fuel-cell technology. Hino and Toyota first combined for a 25-ton truck for Japan with a range of 373 miles. “A fuel-cell-powered version of the Hino XL Series is a win-win for both customers and the community. It will be quiet, smooth, and powerful while emitting nothing but water,” said Tak Yokoo, senior executive engineer for Toyota Research and Development. “Toyota’s 20-plus years of fuel-cell technology combined with Hino’s heavy-duty truck experience will create an innovative and capable product.” Hino’s XL series, first available in 2018, offers both Class 7 and 8 trucks. The new FCET will have the Toyota Mirai fuel cell stack located behind the cab and could generate as much as 670 horsepower with over 1,300 foot-pounds of torque. Currently, Toyota is busy building a megawatt-scale hydrogen fuel power plant in California. Based at the Port of Long Beach, the 2.35-megawatt Tri-Gen plant will use agricultural bio-waste to generate water, electricity and hydrogen. The new plant will not only power Toyota’s new trucks but also its fuel-cell autos. When the plant was first announced in 2017, a Toyota representative said, “Tri-Gen is a major step forward for sustainable mobility and a key accomplishment of our 2050 Environmental Challenge to achieve net zero CO2 emissions from our operations.” www.punjabitruckingusa.com

New Drivewyze Safety+ Service Provides Innovative Alerts And Real-Time Data
T
outing itself as the “Nation’s Largest Weigh Station Bypass Service,” Drivewyze is announcing a new service as part of its goal to give truckers important information about what lies ahead on the road in an effort to improve logistics and safety. Drivewyze’s intelligent transportation system already assists drivers in getting past state highway weigh stations without stopping by digitally transmitting information such as weight, credentials, and safety records to station officials. The service saves both time and fuel. Now, the company is rolling out its new product, Safety+. Drivewyze labels its new app as “the industry’s first proactive driver safety management platform.”
Safety+ provides drivers with proactive speed alerts, parking alerts with real-time parking status, custom safety zones that match a driver’s safety protocol, and risk zone insights which give drivers alerts about steep grades, speeding occurrences, and low bridges. In a blog post, Drivewyze said, “It’s an entirely new way of thinking and managing drivers when it comes to safety. It can help prevent speeding infractions by warning a driver on an upcoming ‘high infraction zone,’ provide an alert for an upcoming high rollover corner, even help with safety alerts down mountain passes.” 26
November & December 2020
The new app has been piloted with eight fleets which range from very large fleets to fleets as small as ten trucks. Fleet managers will be able to monitor and change the behavior of drivers, especially when it comes to safety. It can also “record
how a particular driver is reacting to safety notifications.” One of the most innovative aspects of Safety+ is its ability to alert a driver before they enter a “speed violation zone” which is an area with a high citation rate helping drivers avoid a potential speeding ticket, costing both time and money. In addition, it provides “dynamic parking alerts” which tells a driver the current number of parking spots available in real-time, giving drivers the chance to decide whether to “continue on to the rest area, or look for other alternative parking.” Another feature of Safety+ is its ability for fleets to create Custom Safety Zones where, because of high accident areas, restrictions, road closures, and weather, drivers should either avoid or use care when entering. Drivewyze boasts that its system can make drivers safer, avoiding high insurance rates, costly accidents, and even costlier court cases. In fact, “insurance providers look to insure companies that are proactive in safety. www.punjabitruckingusa.com

Canadian Auto Workers Agree To
A New Deal With Fiat Chrysler
I
n an agreement ratified on Oct. 18 with Canada’s largest private-sector union, Unifor, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV has agreed to invest $1.1 billion (C$1.5 billion) in a Windsor, Ontario assembly plant. More than 9,000 local auto workers will benefit from the investment. Fiat Chrysler will follow the same wage and benefit demands which Ford Motor Co. reached with Unifor workers in September. The company also announced it would spend about C$1.5 billion on a new section of its Windsor plant which would produce electric vehicles, adding 2,000 new jobs, replacing the 1,500 workers who were laid off earlier this year, and guaranteeing the plant would reprise a third shift of workers. “This is a home run for the community of Windsor,” Unifor President Jerry Dias said at a press conference. “We know that with this investment, and as vehicles start to roll off the assembly line in 2024, that our third shift will be back.” Unifor represents 20,000 Canadian auto workers. The plant at Windsor represents 10% of Fiat Chrysler’s manufacturing capability. The plant has the nickname, “Home of Minivans” and produces the Pacifica minivan, a cheaper version of Fiat Chrysler’s Grand Caravan. Unifor’s members voted overwhelmingly in favor of the three-year deal with 78% voting in the affirmative, slightly below the 81% ratification vote by the Ford workers. The deal includes a 5% hourly wage increase, a $7,250 signing bonus, and a $4,000 inflation bonus. “The commitments we have secured in these negotiations will stabilize FCA’s operations in Canada and position us as a global leader in the transition to zeroemission vehicle production,” said Dias. www.punjabitruckingusa.com
“Workers who have feared plant closures and job losses in recent years can now look forward to a bright future with good jobs for years to come.” Dias also said that Fiat Chrysler plans to produce new versions of the company’s iconic “muscle cars” such as the Challenger for each year of the agreement.

Fleets Look To Electric Powered Refrigeration For Lower Emissions And Increased Savings
G
overnment regulations meant to reduce America’s carbon footprint have inspired manufacturers and fleet operators to develop electric power for refrigeration solutions. Known as eTRUs, electric trailer refrigeration units may also lead to lower operating costs and reduced maintenance while they fulfill efforts to lower emissions on the nation’s roads. Trailer manufacturer Wabash National Corp. and specialty foods distributor KeHE Distributors have taken their efforts seriously. Ian Fox, a Wabash product manager, said, “There is a strong movement, in general, away from fossil fuel in the transportation and logistics industry to all-electric or hybridelectric systems.” Illinois-based KeHE recently partnered with Clean Energy Fuels to add low-carbon emission trucks fueled with renewable natural gas to their fleet. KeHE also currently operates more than 150 eTRUs. KeHE claims these units are less expensive to run than diesel powered units, although savings can depend on the cost of energy in various regions of the U.S. Fox stressed that eTRUs are more economical, saying, “Electric-powered refrigeration systems are a part of that [Green] movement. Running a reefer unit on electricity is significantly cheaper than running on diesel fuel.” A broader implementation of eTRUs will depend heavily on the development and increased use of electric and low-emission trucks. Analysts see full electrification of the truck and refrigerated 28

trailer as a long-term result of present efforts by Wabash and KeHE. Some experts, however, can see eTRUs being pulled by conventional diesel engines as well because of cost benefits to fleets and carriers. Lack of charging infrastructure will be the primary obstacle to full adoption of eTRUs in the near future. Another obstacle will be in diagnosing problems because the systems will be more complex. Paul Kroes, an executive at Thermo King, a leader in transport refrigeration, said, “Technicians are usually more adept—or at least used to —diagnosing a diesel-fueled system. Once you go to electric, the requirements for external diagnostic equipment, procedures, data downloads from the unit to figure out what’s gone wrong—that burden increases, or else it’s very difficult to figure out what needs to be fixed.” Wabash’s Fox also points to issues with the new technology, saying, “If you notice the gallon-per-hour fuel usage on a trailer is higher or engine hours are substantially higher for a certain unit, it is worthwhile to check the reefer unit for any recent fault codes and perform a good overall inspection of the trailer structure to ensure everything is in good working order.” Advancements in software are making these systems more dependable and can generally diagnose problems quickly and efficiently. New telematics have improved both monitoring and maintenance on eTRUs. www.punjabitruckingusa.com

EV Developer Hyliion Combines with Tortoise; Stock Price Soars
T
exas-based Hyliion Inc., a designer and developer of hybrid suspension systems and electrified power trains for Class 8 heavy duty trucks, has merged with special-purpose acquisition vehicle (SPAC) Tortoise Acquisition Corp. The new company, Hyliion Holdings Corp., saw a 300% spike in its stock price when it went public on Oct. 2. The surge in price has made Hyliion founder and CEO, 28-year old sports racer Thomas Healy, one of the world’s youngest billionaires with his stake in the company worth over $1.4 billion. Healy said, “We were fortunate on timing. If we were trying to close right when the stock market was on that downswing, we might have been having different discussions.” Despite being in the midst of one of the worst recessions in recent history, the stock market has continued to churn out profits for the ultra-wealthy, but the use of SPAC’s for creating such lucrative deals has drawn the ire of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission who has the job of making sure investors get timely disclosures on insider pay structures. Through the business combination, Hyliion will get $560 million in proceeds to drive its continued development and commercialization of its Hybrid and Hypertruck ERX electrified powertrain solutions. Healy said, “The completion of our merger greatly accelerates Hyliion’s growth plans and unlocks the potential value of our business. The future of commercial trucking demands reduced carbon emissions and more sustainable transportation options.” On the merger, Healy said, “In the first quarter, we kicked off our next financing round. Going public and being able to bring in more capital than we would staying private was attractive. We met with the Tortoise team introduced to us through investment bank Marathon Capital. That was the moment of ‘OK. Let’s do this!’”

It has also recently entered into a global partnership with self-driving technology company TuSimple, which is already conducting self-driving deliveries in conjunction with 32

UPS in the Phoenix, Arizona area. The deal with Navistar would total $3.69 billion and has the support of billionaire investor Carl Icahn. Not surprisingly, Navistar stock surged in early trading on Oct. 16. VW’s trucks’ unit has been seeking to expand, and its acquisition of Navistar and its partnership with TuSimple is a sign of the company’s willingness to be a major player in the production of electric and autonomous commercial trucks. Traton is in the midst of a major restructuring and Traton CEO Herbert Diess called out the importance of adding Navistar in a virtual call with shareholders at VW’s annual general meeting. The partnership between Traton and TuSimple is, according to VW’s website, “the first of its kind in Europe, bringing
together a global OEM and SAE 4 [level 4 autonomy can handle even the most difficult driving situations without human interaction] self-driving technology company.” Traton and TuSimple have entered into a program to operate SAE 4 technology, using Scania trucks, on a “hub to hub route” delivering freight in Sweden. VW continued to say that, “Our partnership with TRATON GROUP accelerates the introduction of autonomous truck technology to new international markets, and we look forward to our global partnership.” Traton will continue to test its driverless fleet of trucks in Sweden, Germany, and other Western European countries as an answer to the continent’s continuing shortage of qualified drivers. www.punjabitruckingusa.com

H
endrickson Truck Commercial Vehicle Systems announced today that it has partnered with Western Star Trucks to offer a comprehensive premium rear suspension portfolio as a part of the chassis enhancements of the Western Star 49X. The suspension offerings include the introduction of HAULMAAX® EX and the expansion of ULTIMAAX® and PRIMAAX® EX on the new Western Star truck. “When developing our trucks, we apply our vocationally-focused engineering and manufacturing expertise together with equipment from leading suppliers to create solutions that deliver the durability and dependability to benefit our customers’ operations,” said David Carson, senior vice president, Vocational sales and marketing, Daimler Trucks North America. “We’re deeply committed to the vocational market and are looking forward to adding the toughest Western Star yet to our portfolio” added Carson. With the new vehicle’s introduction, Hendrickson will also be debuting its next-generation heavy-duty rubber suspension, HAULMAAX EX. To address the growing demand for rubber suspensions across all vocational applications, the HAULMAAX EX suspension is optimized to provide increased site rating, expanded capacity ranges, and improved durability. “Customers today expect more out of their vocational suspensions and HAULMAAX EX exceeds those expectations by expanding on the capabilities of the current HAULMAAX design with
up to a 70,000-pound site rating for the 46,000-pound capacity suspension. HAULMAAX EX is extremely rugged, supporting the most demanding vocational applications and offering capacities of 40,000 pounds, 46,000 pounds, and now 52,000 pounds.” says Ashley Dudding, director of engineering for Hendrickson Truck Commercial Vehicle Systems. “Hendrickson utilized our industryleading analysis and validation techniques to ensure HAULMAAX EX would meet these rigorous demands, minimize maintenance requirements and deliver the lightest weight vocational suspension on the market” added Dudding. In addition to HAULMAAX EX, The 49X will also offer Hendrickson’s ULTIMAAX severe-duty rubber suspension for more extreme applications as well as PRIMAAX EX, Hendrickson’s severe-duty vocational air suspension for applications requiring the softer ride of an air suspension but still demanding rugged durability. ULTIMAAX is available in capacities of 52,000, 60,000, and 70,000 pounds and delivers enhanced stability, handling, and ride quality even in the most severe-duty environments where vehicles encounter harsh and unexpected ground conditions. The integration of Hendrickson’s proven walking (equalizing) beam technology, with its patented progressive rate spring, provides a balance of loaded stability and unloaded ride quality even in the most rugged environments. PRIMAAX EX is designed specifically for the rigorous demands of vocational, severe-service, and heavy-haul applications. The system features a robust structural design optimized for exceptional stability, handling, and ride resulting in higher driver comfort and less premature wear on expensive truck and body equipment. Initially, the new vehicle will feature PRIMAAX EX in capacities of 46,000 and 52,000 pounds with expanded capacities coming soon. New Technology is Replacing Pencil and Paper for Fleet Inspections
P
roviding timely maintenance is essential for any successful fleet. In fact, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration requires regular inspections of commercial fleets. Inspecting equipment, both before and after trips, has also long been a way to avoid costly maintenance or replacement of parts. Fortunately, we have come a long way from simply kicking tires or checking oil and then writing everything down on a piece of paper which may or may not make it to the maintenance department. Therefore, in order to become more efficient, many fleets have implemented advanced technologies to assist drivers perform routine inspections.
With that in mind, Zonar Systems has created the innovative Electronic Verified Inspection Reporting (EVIR) solution which has taken the standard Driver Verified Inspection Report (DVIR) to a new level by making “inspections truly verifiable.” Zonar’s website says, “Drivers cannot pencil whip EVIR inspections, nor can they rush through any part of the inspection itself. Drivers stay compliant with DOT, OSHA and MSHA regulations, and you know with certainty fleet inspections are being performed thoroughly and properly every time.” Once inspections are completed, they are uploaded into Zonar’s secure online portal to be accessed by fleet managers or federal agencies. 42
November & December 2020
Another fleet management tool is provided by Fleetio, a software app which helps fleets to eliminate paperwork, stay in compliance with federal regulations and address maintenance issues immediately. Fleetio claims its inspections are “an intuitive solution available on your smartphone or computer to help you manage and track the inspections process end-to-end.” Fleetio allows immediate communication between drivers and maintenance staff by simply opening the app, entering the problem and sending electronically. This allows maintenance departments to begin solving the problem right away. Fleetio stores inspection reports and maintenance history for every piece of equipment for up to six months. It also allows maintenance departments to view real time data on equipment defects and react as quickly as possible, with cost savings as a key benefit for fleets. At a time when a pandemic is raging throughout the U.S. and face to face meetings are often impractical, it is still important for fleets to stay in touch with drivers, especially when it comes to training for inspections. Some fleets have resorted to weekly group conference calls between drivers and maintenance staff to go over inspections, problems with equipment or complaints about drivers leaving maintenance issues untended. Fleets have even noticed that drivers have been able to form more camaraderie as a result of these weekly virtual meetings. Facebook Live events have become standard for communication between drivers and fleet managers. Topics such as proper inspections, safety and driver challenges are often central to these events. Some fleets even post tips and tricks on driver-only pages for drivers to download. www.punjabitruckingusa.com

Traton Agrees To Navistar’s Terms; Acquires U.S. Engine Manufacturer For $3.7 Billion
44
November & December 2020
W
ith priorities including electric vehicles and new diesel powertrains, Traton SE, a subsidiary of Volkswagen, has agreed to buy Illinois-based engine manufacturer Navistar International Corp. for the $44.50 a share which Navistar was asking. Traton is already one of the world’s largest commercial heavy-duty vehicle builders in the world, and, along with Navistar, owns MAN Truck and Bus, Scania, and the Caminhões e Ônibus (Trucks and Buses) brand. Traton CEO Mathias Gründler said, “We are pleased to have reached an agreement in principle for a transaction after intensive negotiations with Navistar. We are looking forward to completing our due diligence and obtaining the necessary approvals in respect of this exciting deal in order to welcome the new Traton family member.” The total purchase price is $3.7 billion. Traton had already owned about 16% of Navistar. Billionaire shareholder Carl Icahn and MHR fund management supported the purchase. Once the agreement is finalized, the two companies will continue to focus on a range of issues such as the faster delivery of parts to dealers, more efficient procurement, and systems support. The acquisition of Navistar will enable Traton to access the North American truck market, which accounts for the biggest chunk of industry profits. Traton and Navistar also would save substantial development costs related to new technology such as autonomous and electric vehicles. Both companies had recently partnered with San Diegobased self-driving startup TuSimple, with Traton already teaming with TuSimple using Scania trucks in Europe for limited deliveries. www.punjabitruckingusa.com
