Earlier, Phulkari embroidery was done over just head scarfs and shawls, but with each passing day, the meaning of Phulkari also changed. Now, this kind of embroidery is done on the collars of men's kurtas also, leave women or girls. Now, Phulkari is of three kinds- phulkari, Adhabagh, and bagh. Phulkaris mean just shawls or Punjabi Phulkari dupattas, Adhabagh means scattered phulkari work on the clothes, and bagh means when the entire attire is full of phulkari embroidery. In the case of Phulkari embroidery, the entire embroidery is done with yellow or white silk floss on the cotton khaddar. Usually, other embroideries start from either of the both ends of the cloth but when it comes to phulkari, it starts from the center and the fabric on which it is used is called chashm-e-bulbul.

Phulkari of South western and south Punjab region: In this type of Phulkari embroidery, there are wide edges on which bird and animal designs are embroidered. GhunghatBagh: This one originated in Pakistan's Rawalpindi. The GhunghatBaghPhulkari embroidery is overly embroidered in the center in a way that when it is worn over the head, the design of the phulkari is clearly visible. This embroidery can also be used as a veil. Neelak: This type of phulkari is basically a bright red or yellow Phulkari embroidery on a red or black background.
