GENERAL FEATURES
PROFESSIONAL QUALITY FLASHLIGHTS WITHIN EVERYONE’S GRASP LEDWAVE flashlights are instruments of great technical precision. They are designed and manufactured to suit the strict requirements of the world’s armies, law enforcement and professional user. Manufactured in CNC machined 6063-T aluminium. This type of aluminium is used both by the army and aeronautic industry and is also coated in an IIb-type anodised layer. Our flashlights have been tested and certified in accordance with the MIL-STD-461E and MIL-STD-810F standards. LEDWAVE flashlights are tough and precise, whatever the operating conditions. All LEDWAVE flashlight bulbs are protected by a tempered glass lens. The advantage of this material over polycarbonate is its greater resistance to the high temperatures produced after prolonged use and impacts. LEDWAVE flashlights are also weatherproof as they come with high-performance O-ring seals. Whatever the weather conditions, you may use your LEDWAVE flashlight without worrying about changes in its accurate performance. Our flashlights incorporate top performance CR123A lithium or rechargeable batteries. LEDWAVE flashlights are safe, reliable and hard-wearing.
GENERAL FEATURES
FOCUS OR PREFOCUS? LEDWAVE flashlights are equipped with a prefocusing system. The flashlight reflector has been designed by CAD to shed maximum light on the target. It yields a point of maximum intensity in the centre of the light beam and a very broad corona to guarantee maximum possible light diffusion. On manual focus flashlights either a maximum focus point or a wide corona can be chosen. The number of lumens of a flashlight is solely a partial indicator of its performance, as this only gives an idea of the light amount obtained at a specific point. What really needs to be taken into account is both the light intensity of the whole light beam focused on a target, and the flashlight’s reach.

LED, XENON OR HID When choosing a flashlight, the first thing to consider is its bulb type. For standard use and lighting up to a distance of 100 metres, LED is the best choice as it lasts virtually forever and consumes very little energy. Second and third generation LEDs are used by LEDWAVE and provides bright white light with such a high quality unrivaled on the market. XENON, a technology that also features great advantages and a reach of up to 250 metres, is available in our high-performance flashlights. Higher energy consumption is compensated by the use of rechargeable batteries or of the new system of lithium ion batteries that LEDWAVE has incorporated in some of its models. If you require even greater illumination, we can supply HID technology in a spot flashlight that generates pure white light and has a useful span life exceeding that of xenon. This bulb type takes a few seconds before reaching its maximum light intensity.

LIGHT COLOURS AND THEIR ADVANTAGES One of the “specialities” of LEDWAVE are the flashlights with different coloured LEDs, which are designed to suit the different uses and applications of armed forces and hunters worldwide. The main benefit of colour LEDs over and above colour filters applied on a white light flashlight is that intensity is not lost through the use of a filter; a loss that can reach up to 70%. With colour LEDs all the light power is preserved while using the colour required. The green light of the Wildfinder model performs several functions. It enhances night vision, is invisible to animals, and helps intensify contrast. The blue colour of the Tracking Light TL-1 model intensifies blood contrast. Since it has a very long and precise wavelength, bloodstains appear virtually black, while other items appear in different tones of grey. This helps hunters to know the place where an animal has been wounded, or professional forensic scientists to identify the remains of blood or other body fluids and traces. The red light of the Wildfinder II enhances the night vision of the human eye and attracts less attention from animals. It is therefore very useful for tracking game at night.

LUMENS VS. CANDELAS What is a (Lm) Lumen? A lumen is a unit of standard measurement used to describe how much light is contained in a certain area. What is a (Cd) candela? A candela is a measurement of the intensity of light, used in the International Standard (SI) measurement system. Both are very simple definitions on complex measurement units, but at Ledwave our will is to make understand our customers and flashlight enthusiast with very basic facts why Candelas and why Lumens. The most concern of all users is to know what is the real reach of the flashlight or how far the flashlight they carry in their hands can illuminate targets in darkness, at Ledwave we can give the exact answer of that by using candelas as a unit because it’s the unit that can provide the luminous intensity which is the only “real” way to know what is the reach that a flashlight can carry out. At Ledwave we provide exact readings over all our program of flashlights for users know the exact candela rating with the correspondent reach of each Ledwave flashlight according to Photometric and Gonophotometric official certified labs (ENAC) of the technical university of Barcelona (Spain).
Why other flashlight manufacturers advertise measurements in Lumens but not candelas? There might be many reasons for it, but the main is that surprisingly most of flashlight manufacturers don’t even know how to measure the flashlight light output from the flashlights they manufacture and they advertise the reach of the flashlight with the output of light contained in a certain area (lumens), by naked eye and with wrong measurement unit to know the reach. Many others just lie or invent measurements to sell more flashlights and confuse all users. At Ledwave we only provide the real measurement of every model manufactured with official government certifications and international certified standards provided by our labs in the University of Barcelona.
All the technical features of our flashlights in this catalogue have been made by an independent official laboratory (APPLUS).

This means that tests were made in real conditions of use and for you the insurance to have same results with your LEDWAVE flashlight. The reaches of the flashlights have been measured with a minimal light of 0.5 lux following American norms IBC (International Building Code) in ICC norm (International Code Council) and the European norm EN 1838.

ANSI-NEMA FL-1 What is it?? On August 18, 2009, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) approved a new specification standardizing flashlight performance. The standard was developed by the Flashlight Standards Committee of the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA). The purpose of the standard is to allow consumers to make reliable comparisons of lights and to eliminate exaggerated light performance by quoting “emitter lumens” or “out-the-front lumens”. Ledwave performs its test with the necessary equipment and calibration which makes this a very expensive undertaking . These tests take place in the University of Barcelona independent lab APPlus certified by ENAC (spanish governent).
The FL-1 Standard Performance of flashlights is measured using new batteries included with the light when purchased or, if no batteries are included, the batteries recommended by the packaging. There are six criteria used:

Light Output Total lumens of output, measured in an integrating sphere after the light has been on for 30-120 seconds. 30 seconds gives a little time for the LED to get hot and the battery voltage to sag which will usually result in a lower output number. Runtime The amount of continuous runtime (in minutes) until the light output drops to 10% of its original value (measured 30 seconds after turning the light on). This test is done in an integrating sphere just like the lumen test with light output measured every 15 minutes. Peak Beam Intensity Light intensity in candela (cd) at the brightest part of the beam. A lux reading in the brightest portion of the beam is taken at some distance with the light on its brightest mode and tightest focus at some time between 30 and 120 seconds of turning the light on. The lux reading is multiplied by the square of the distance in meters to get candela. Regardless of the distance at which the reading is taken, you should end up with the same value in candela, therefore the measurement is independent of distance. A lux reading taken at 1 meter distance is the same as candela (since 1 squared is 1). Beam Reach The distance in meters at which the flashlight produces a light intensity of 0.25 lux. This is not very bright, about equal to a full moon.
This distance is not actually measured. Instead the value is calculated by taking the peak beam intensity measured above, dividing by 0.25 lux, and taking the square root of the result. Water Resistance There are three possible ratings: IPX4 “Water resistant” Light can be splashed with water from all directions without water getting inside. IPX7 “Water proof” The light can be submerged in 1 meter of water for 30 minutes. Water can leak into the light, but not into areas with electronics or batteries. The light must still operate when removed from the water and then is tested again 30 minutes after being removed. IPX8 “Submersible” The light can be submerged for 4 hours to some depth greater than 1 meter. The depth would be specified, e.g. IPX8 10 meters. Realistically the light is not put in the given depth of water, but instead is completely submerged in a container and the pressure is then increased to simulate the depth. Impact Resistance Height, in meters, from which the light (including batteries) can be dropped onto concrete without cracking or breaking and still function. Lights are dropped while in the Off position and allowed to come to rest before inspecting for damage. For ratings over 1 meter, each sample light is dropped six times with different faces towards the ground.

WHAT IS LED TECHNOLOGY? LEDWAVE flashlights are manufactured to meet the needs of the armed forces and of security corps and personnel. The quality of the materials used to manufacture them is therefore extremely important. OMBU performs constant research in order to incorporate the latest LED technology (Light Emitting Diode) in its products. Unlike traditional incandescent lights, LEDs are solid-state devices: light is generated on a molecular scale and not through the use of a filament. LEDs therefore have three great advantages over conventional incandescent lights: Energy efficiency: an incandescent lamp emits light by means of a filament heated by an electrical current. Heating this filament requires the consumption of a large quantity of energy, which is released not as light, but as heat (a normal bulb therefore heats up when it is on). LEDs have no filaments to heat and thus do not waste energy. They are therefore between 15 and 20 times more efficient than incandescent lamps. Long useful life: the part of the LED that emits light has a useful life of approximately 100,000 hours whereas the life of a normal incandescent lamp does not usually exceed 40 hours. Mechanical resistance: LED components are coated with optical quality epoxy resin, which is a practically indestructible material. There are neither glass parts nor breakable filaments. LEDs are therefore perfect for hostile environments and extreme temperatures. In an incandescent lamp on the other hand, the filament and the glass bulb are extremely fragile and can break at the slightest impact.

A polymer is a substance composed of molecules with large molecular mass composed of repeating structural units, or monomers, connected by covalent chemical bonds. Well known examples of polymers include plastics, DNA and proteins. A simple example could be polypropylene, polystyrene, polyacrylonitrile, Polyethylene, PVB, or PVC‌.
WHAT KIND OF POLYMER IS LEDWAVE USING? Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) UHMW is often referred to as the world’s toughest polymer. UHMW is a linear high density polyethylene which has high abrasion resistance as well as high impact strength. UHMW is also chemically resistant and has a low coefficient of friction which makes it highly effective in a variety of applications. UHMW can be crosslinked, reprocessed, color-matched.Typical applications include bumpers, dock fenders, wear strips, bearings, bushings, rollers, sprockets, guide rails, star wheels, conveyor tracks and chute, hopper and truck bed liners. WHAT IS THE XENON TECHNOLOGY? Ombu applies on his range of Xenon tactic lights a kind of bulb which is filled of gas. These are micro bulbs (small sized) filled with high pressure gas that enhances the brightness capability up to a 180% in most of our lights. HID TECHNOLOGY WHAT IS HID TECHNOLOGY? HOW DOES HID WORK? HID (High Intensity Discharge) is a technology that substitutes the traditional wolfram filament in halogen bulbs with a sealed capsule of xenon gas. The technology in high intensity discharge lighting is in some ways similar to fluorescent technology: an arc is established between two electrodes in a gas-filled tube which causes a metallic vapour to produce radiant energy. However, in the case of HID technology, a combination of factors shifts the wavelength of much of this energy to within the visible range, so light is produced without the need for phosphors. In addition, the electrodes are only a few centimetres apart (at opposite ends of a sealed “arc tube”) and the gases in the tube are highly pressurized. This allows the arc to generate extremely high temperatures, causing metallic elements floating inside the bulb to vaporize and release large amounts of visible radiant energy. There are three main types of HID lamps: mercury vapour, metal halide and sodium. The names refer to the elements that are added to the gases in the arc stream which cause each type to have somewhat different color characteristics and overall lamp efficiency. Like any gaseous discharge light source, HID lamps have a number of specific electrical requirements that must be supplied by a ballast. HID lamps require a warm-up period to achieve full light output. HID lamps are an ideal choice for applications where safety is a concern.

TACTICAL HOLSTER POLYMER, ADJUSTABLE Universal swivelling polymer holster for tactical flashlights is designated for professional use. It enables very fast tilt of the flashlight from the holder. It contains also a safety lock preventing spontaneous release of the flashlight. Special patented fastening clamp ensures its fixation on the belt with one hand only with no need of unbuckling the belt. The flashlight can be rotated in respect to the belt by full circle of 360 degrees with 16 locking positions. The flashlight in horizontal or slightly inclined position can be used for permanent lighting in front of the user, freeing thus his hands.

You can use our flashlights 100% assured. They successfully passed the following tests and norms: FCC rules (CFR 47 Part 15) 2004, subpart B + Directive 2004/108/EC UNE-EN 61000-6-3: 2007 UNE-EN 61000-6-2: 2006 These norms measure the radiated emissions RF, electrostatic discharges that flashlights can produce during their use. We also measure, the immunity of the flashlight against electromagnetic fields and low frequency magnetic fields. You can use our flashlights with all kind of weapons in total assurance. EMC: MIL-STD-461-E This norm tests the radiated emissions and the radiated immunity to electric fields produced by the flashlight. MIL-STD-810D:86 4 principal points: 501.2: The flashlight is placed in a chamber with a temperature of + 80ºC during 1 hour. During this time the flashlight must work properly. 502.2: The flashlight is placed in a chamber with a temperature of – 20ºC during 6 hours. During this time the flashlight must work properly. 503.2: The flashlight is placed in a chamber with a temperature of – 20ºC during 1 hour and in 5 minutes temperature is switched at + 80ºC during 1 hour. This cycle is made 20 times. The flashlight must work properly. 512.2: The flashlight is immersed in 1 meter depth water tank during 2 hours in ambient temperature. The flashlight must works properly.
MIL-STD-810F The flashlight is submitted at random vibrations on 3 axes during 1 hour on each axe. The flashlight must work properly and don’t produce any failure.
