The Executive Report

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! The last several months I have been very busy attending all four of the national shows. It has been a privilege to be able to watch those beautiful Milking Shorthorn cattle parade across the show rings with proud owners and breeders at their halter. The cattle at the shows have been of high quality. It was thrilling to watch Cates Ruben Tulsa-Time EXP win the Grand Champion honors once, twice and the third time was the charm, making her the first winner of the Jim King Triple Crown Award! A special congratulations to Pete Cate on his victories! She is a beautiful cow and bred and owned to top it off! The first place winners at all the national shows consisted of a high percentage of bred and owned animals. I find this to be an outstanding accomplishment and tribute to our breed. Many times the animals that were first place and not a bred and owned originated from the other first place bred and owned farms, so our Milking Shorthorn breeders bred them right for whoever shows them. Not only was I able to watch the shows, but I was able to visit with many of you the breeders at the shows, getting to know many of you better and being able to chat about our breed and where we should be headed in the future, as well as answering questions and solving problems. Visiting with you the breeders is definitely the best part of the job. As I am writing this, the AMSS Board is preparing to travel to Beloit for the Winter Board Meeting. There is a full two-day schedule as the board reviews all aspects of our Society. The 12-member board takes their job seriously as they make important decisions about the future of the organization. One of the decisions that was made at the Summer Board Meeting was to hire an Office Manager to work out of the Beloit office. Applications were accepted, interviews were completed and the job was offered to Kathryn Lynch of Beloit. Kathy began work December first and has already jumped in with both feet. I will be working with Kathy to train her over the next couple of months, as well as having some training assistance from the Brown Swiss office. Her responsibilities will include completing all registrations, transfers, embryo work, as well as bookkeeping. She will also be answering phones as well as many of the other day-to-day tasks in the office. As she is training, please be as kind and patient to her as you were to me when I started. Kathy does not have any dairy background but she does have the technical skills that we need in the office. She has already made the statement that this will be her last job. She plans to work for AMSS until she retires, which is years away. I am excited to have her on board to assist me in serving you the members. As we start into the New Year, I want to remind everyone of a couple of changes. Starting JanuCont. on pg. 8

President's Corner

By Scott Cailteux The leaves have fallen, the temperature is dropping, and another year is close to going into the history books. As I write this letter, it is a few days before we celebrate an original American holiday –Thanksgiving Day! I hope that each of you will be able to spend quality time with your family during the holiday season. We are truly blessed to live in the United States of America, the most prosperous country in the world. Despite our differences, we are all united under a common belief in freedom for all. Reflecting back on 2015, AMSS has a lot to be thankful for. Our registrations and transfers have remained stable, interest and demand for Milking Shorthorn cattle appears to be on an upward trend, our financial position is strong, and we have many dedicated and loyal members who tirelessly work to improve the breed. Jane and I were fortunate to be able to attend the Milking Shorthorn shows at the Iowa, Illinois, and Kansas State Fairs and the All-American and World Dairy Expo this fall. We thoroughly enjoyed watching the shows and spending time with our Milking Shorthorn friends. The quantity and quality of Milking Shorthorns shown at these events were very impressive. The enthusiasm and sportsmanship of our members is contagious. People from the other dairy breeds are starting to notice the tremendous progress we are making with our cattle. Lazy M Farm’s Innisfail-WO Mega Ladyluck ET was the Supreme Champion at the Iowa State Fair. Pete Cate’s Reuben Tulsa Time-EXP was Grand Champion at the All American, World Dairy Expo, and NAILE Shows, thus becoming the first winner of the Jim King Triple Crown award. Way to go Pete! I am pleased to inform you we have hired Kathryn Lynch to fill our recently created Office Manager position. Kathryn lives in Beloit, Wisconsin, and has over twenty years of office administration experience. She is very excited about becoming part of the Milking Shorthorn family. Beginning December 1, we will once again have an employee in our office at the Brown Swiss building in Beloit. We expect the quality of our membership services to steadily improve as Kathryn

Triple Crown Champion - It's Tulsa-Time!

O

nly a few get to experience the thrill of multiple champion wins – let alone in one year. Added to the list of great cows such as Alfair and Kewpie is this year’s multi-champion, Cates Ruben Tulsa-Time EXP. The first Jim King Triple Crown winner in history, she garnered the banners at Harrisburg, Madison and Louisville this year. Instituted as a new award in 2013, the Jim King Triple Crown Award is presented to any animal that wins three Grand Champion awards at three separate national shows in the same year. The only requirement is that one of those three national show champion awards must be the World Dairy Expo show. A premium of $3,000 is paid from the fund established to honor the late Jim King, previous president and director of the AMSS and owner of Kingsdale Milking Shorthorns of Illinois. Cates Ruben Tulsa-Time EXP is owned by Pete Cate of Warren, New Hampshire. Pete’s history with the cow family is deep. His parents bought the foundation cow of this great ‘T’ family in 1967 and they have continued to develop this family for almost 50 years. Tulsa-Time was tapped by judges as the first-place Four-Year-Old at the Eastern National, International and Winter National shows and ultimately selected as Senior and Grand Champion and Best Udder at all three shows as well. She is an Innisfail Ruben out of a long line of winners. Her dam is the EX-90 Cates KAO Daytona ET, winner of the Spring Yearling class at the Northeast National Show in 2005. Tulsa’s granddam was Cates Rebel Tangerine 2E-93. Tangerine’s accomplishments included Unanimous All-American Sr. Three-Year-Old in 2000. That year she won an unofficial Triple Crown as Intermediate and Reserve Grand Champion at the World Dairy Expo, Grand Champion at the Eastern National Show in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and at the Northeast National in Springfield, Massachusetts. Tangerine went on to win Grand

6

again at the All-American show in 2001. Tulsa’s fifth dam, Cates MHPS Toots EXP, was the Cate’s first bred and owned cow to win her open class at a national show, the Four-YearOld class at Eastern States in 1991. She was Grand Champion of the Eastern National Junior Show three times as Two-Year-Old (’89), Four-Year-Old, (’91), and a Six-Year-Old (’93). This cow family has also produced bulls making an impact on the paternal side of the breed. Cates PT Tangerines Target and Cates Tangerines Perles Titan are both scored EX90. Both bulls have had great success within the Shorthorn world. Titan was the sire of Green Acres Titan Mascara 2E90 who was named the Cow of the Year in 2014 and the National Milk Production Champion of the Breed for 2014 with 7-09 305D 33,470M 989F 926P. Target is the sire of Halpins Mona II who was All-American Five-Year-Old and Reserve Grand Champion of the 2013 World Dairy Expo. Target also sired Green Acres Target Spice who was Unanimous All-American Five-Year-Old in 2009 and Honorable Mentional All-American Aged Cow in 2010. Tulsa was raised at home as a calf and a heifer. She was bred to calve out as a twoyear-old and milked in the backyard with a portable milk pump twice-a-day. That year she was exhibited at Expo where she placed 21st. The decision was made to change things up and she was sent to Burgess Farm in Bradford, Vermont, as a three-year-old. Burgess Farm was housing the other show cows at the time. She fared much better on the colored shavings as a three-year-old standing second at both Harrisburg and Madison and ending the year as the Reserve All-American Sr. Three-Year-Old. As a Four-Year-Old she and the other show cows were relocated again, caused by an unexpected retirement. Tulsa was moved to Morrill Farm in Penacook, New Hampshire, where Ryan Morrill had already experienced

working with Tulsa. He agreed to take her in. She calved there in June with a heifer calf sired by Lands Brook Clancy, named Cates LBC Texas-Tea. Tulsa now lives in a special stall with one other cow where she will stay for the remainder of her lactation. She is lovingly referred to as Ryan’s girlfriend or the red-headed step child by the Morrill Farm family.

he Eastern National Show was held September 15 and 16 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania with Dean Dohle of Missouri serving as the official for the show. “It’s an easy winner for me,” said Doyle as he named Hard Core Premum Fire Maid EXP as his Junior Champion of the show. Owned by Peter Vail, Frank and Diane Borba and Hillpoint Partners, the first-place Fall Yearling Premium daughter returned to the winner’s circle for the second year. Last year’s Supreme Junior Champion of the All-American Dairy Show, the September 2013 heifer is backed by multiple Excellent dams. The Reserve Junior Champion banner went to the first-place Fall Calf, Cate’s Titan Mick Lite, owned by Peter Cate of Warren, New Hampshire. Also the Best Bred & Owned heifer of the show, she is a September daughter of Titan. Intermediate and Reserve Grand Champion was the first-place Senior Three-Year-Old, HC-HP Red Rob Fireball EXP ET, owned by Peter Vail and Hillpoint Partners of Valatie, New York. The 90-point Red Robin daughter is a previous All-American nominee. The Reserve Intermediate Champion was Innisfail JD Lady 217 EXP, owned by Mike Halpin of Cullom, Illinois. She was the second-place Senior Three-Year-Old. Senior and Grand Champion honors as well as the Best Bred and Owned of the show went to Cate’s Ruben Tulsa-Time EXP. The firstplace Four-Year-Old is a Ruben daughter also owned by Peter Cate. Reserve Senior Champion honors were won by Kuszmar Arkansas Mud EXP. The 2E93 Mudslinger daughter was the first-place 100,000 pound cow and is owned by Steven & Susan Kuszlyk, of Batavia, New York. The Total Performance Winner was Hard Core Ace Roxy EXP, owned by Keith and Donnette Fisher, of New Enterprise, Pennsylvania. They were also named the Premier Breeder & Exhibitors of the show.

Eastern National Junior Show

The Eastern National Junior Milking Shorthorn Show was held Monday, September 14th as part of the All-American Dairy Show in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Tom McCauley of Michigan sorted the 85 junior-owned animals. T

he Winter National Milking Shorthorn Show was held Sunday, November 8th in Louisville, Kentucky. Judge Ted Smart of Anna, Ohio sorted the 184 bulls, heifers and cows. The show kicked off with several deep classes of young cows, cumulating with Washita Sami Ricibobi EXP being named the Intermediate Champion for Jesse Arthur of Pauls Valley, Oklahoma. The first-place Senior Three-Year-Old is sired by Mysha-WO Advent Liriano-ET and was the Reserve AllAmerican Fall Yearling in 2013. Innisfail Cy Rosalie 252 made a fitting Reserve Intermediate Champion for owner Cody Perry of Lawrenceburg, Indiana. The Mysha McNutmeg Cyclone daughter was the first-place Senior Two-Year-Old. Capturing an elusive Triple Crown title, Cates Ruben Tulsa-Time EXP was named the Senior and Grand Champion of the show for Peter Cate of Warren, New Hampshire. Tulsa-Time, also Grand Champion of the Central National and Eastern National shows this year, is sired by Innisfail Red Ruben and backed by an Othello dam, then a ‘2E-93’ granddam with an All-American title. Judge Smart then chose the second-place Four-YearOld, Halpins Gracie 2nd, to be his Reserve Senior and Grand Champion. Gracie 2nd, scored ‘E90,’ is owned by Amy Halpin of Buckingham, Illinois and was the Reserve Intermediate Champion of the Eastern National in 2014. She is sired by Halpins Morning After-ET and out of a ‘V88’ Romeo daughter with two AllAmerican titles. Following the impressive cow show, a group of bull calves were exhibited. The Grand Champion bull was named Walnut Grove Mike for William Voorhees of Green-

castle, Indiana. The Reserve Grand Champion bull was Molehill Snoopy Oppenheimer ET for Ryan Benter of Perryville, Kentucky. The heifer show boasted big numbers, but only one young animal could come out on top. That heifer was B-D-F Showtime Sweet Feet, the Junior Champion of the show for Dallas Butts, Cory, Indiana. The Hard Core R. Rob Showtime EXP daughter topped the Winter Yearling class and was the Reserve Junior Champion of the Indiana State Fair in 2014. Reserve Junior Champion was named HillsAcre Callie for Bob Hill of Williamsburg, Indiana. Callie is a Hills-Acre PN Captain daughter and was the first-place Winter Calf. Premier Breeder & Exhibitor went to Halpin Farms of Cullom, Illinois. Indiana captured the state herd banner, partially due to the help of the Total Performance Cow, Innisfail Ro Lady 7088 EXP, owned by Logan Lattire of Lawrenceburg, Indiana. Lady 7088 was also the Total Performance Cow at last year’s Winter National. She boasts records to 29,883M and has a lifetime total of 104,710M 3,043F 3,204P. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year from all of us at Purebred Publishing Cheri, Ashley, Robin & Deb In Memorium Samuel G. Yoder, 83, of Shoemakersville, passed away on Wednesday, November 25, 2015. Born February 21, 1932. He was the husband of Phyllis P. (Ryan) Yoder. They were married on January 26, 1957, celebrating fifty-eight years of marriage. Born in Shoemakersville, he was the son of the late Irwin H. and Thelma R. (Unger) Yoder. He was a 1949 graduate of Perry High School and a 1953 graduate of F & M College, Lancaster. While in college, Sam was a member and captain of the soccer team, which was the 1952 men's soccer NCAA national champion team. He was inducted into both the F & M and Hamburg Area School District Athletic Halls of Fame. Sam was a self-employed dairy farmer on his farm, Pinesedge Farm, in Ontelaunee Twp. Juniors ~ Juniors ~ Juniors ~ Juniors ~ Juniors ~ Juniors American Milking Shorthorn Junior Society Minutes

Winter 2015 Officers Present: President: Jessica Crawley Secretary: Liza Van der Laan Reporter: Jeremiah Johnson The 2015 American Milking Shorthorn Junior Society winter meeting was held at the North American International Livestock Exposition at Louisville, Kentucky, at 1:00 PM on November 7, 2015. Twenty-five members and three executive officers were present. President Jessica Crawley called the meeting to order. The officers introduced themselves along with their hometown and favorite type of shoe, followed by all attending members. After introductions, the secretary's report was read. Sarah Rhoades, Ohio, moved to approve the minutes. The motion passed. Old business followed. The new junior shirts for NAILE were discussed, with the juniors liking them. There will be a new color next year and juniors will pay $5 for a shirt. It was announced that the new multiple ownership rule is now in effect. Also, new juniors

can now join after August first and be able to show for the year, if they pay a $5 late fee. New members can also join at national convention. Following this, it was discussed that for any transaction of business at any meeting, 25 members and two executive officers must be present to have a quorum. Congratulations were extended to the new executive officers that were voted in during the 2015 Wisconsin Convention. The new officers are as follows: President-Jessica Crawley, Treasurer-Nicholas Achen, and Reporter-Jeremiah Johnson. The old business was then approved. New business was then discussed. The first item for discussion was about the 9-21 age rule. The current rule states that you must be 9 as of January first, and you age out when you are 21 as of January first. The option was to change it so that you can start showing right after your ninth birthday, and stop right after 21st. Members discussed the drawbacks of the current rule, and the drawbacks of changing it, as well as the benefits of both. Majority of attending members wanted to keep the current January first rule. This opinion will be brought back to the executive officers in their decision of this rule.

Six months may seem like a long time to some people, but to me, it’s equivalent to the blink of an eye. Six months ago I was in Black River Falls where I received my crown and the beginning of my reign; now I am halfway through my reign as queen and have been to three National shows and have been a part of history. Six months ago who would have thought that there would be a Triple Crown winner, but I got to watch Cate’s Ruben Tulsa-Time EXP complete that task this year. A lot of things happen in six months’ time. Six months from now I will have the opportunity to crown a new queen at the 2016 convention, in my home state of Ohio. I would like to cordially invite all of you to the 2016 National Milking Shorthorn Convention in Dublin, Ohio, next June. I am particularly excited about this convention, not only because it is in my home state but because I will get to end my reign at home. I strongly encourage any of you girls that are eligible to apply to do so, simply because this experience has been one of the most exciting of my life. I have been given a whole new respect for our industry and breed by seeing some of the behind-the-scenes activities at these shows and also by meeting many new people. Being the National Queen has only made my love for the Milking Shorthorn breed grow stronger and I hope that there are many girls that are planning to apply for this queen position. In six months’ time I hope to see as many former queens as I can, continue to meet people that share my passion, and complete my reign in a very positive way. I encourage you all to join us in Dublin, Ohio for fun, fellowship, and a celebration of our great breed at the 2016 National Milking Shorthorn Convention.

Office Manager Hired The American Milking Shorthorn Society is pleased to announce the hiring of Kathryn (Kathy) Lynch as the new Office Manager. Kathy began working in the Beloit, Wisconsin, office on December first. Kathy does not have any dairy background, however she is

Thomas Shaw, Ohio, moved to close nominations. Sarah Rhoades, Ohio, seconded. Voting was then held. New ownership rules for the 2016 show season, and that new members who miss the August first deadline have a $5 late charge, making their membership cost $30. Native Shorthorns New Promotional Piece Introduced Most dairy cattle breeders know Milking Shorthorns as the versatile, dual-purpose breed. She is able to produce enough milk to be competitive as a dairy animal, while still being hardy animals that bring a good price at market. However, with the recent push for more feminine, “show-ring type” style animals, some may think that this dual-purpose quality has left the breed. This is not so. There are still many breeders who produce truly multipurpose Milking Shorthorn cattle. “Native” Milking Shorthorns, also known as Heritage Milking Shorthorns, are those cattle whose entire pedigree can trace to the Coates Shorthorn Herd Book from 1822. To achieve this designation, cattle cannot have any breed other than Shorthorn in their bloodlines. Because of this, these Native Shorthorns are some of the hardiest, most adaptable cattle in the world. They boast an efficient reproductive system, superior feet and legs, competitive milk production and quality meat.

The Native Milking Shorthorns are just one of many different kinds of Milking Shorthorns that are adaptable to any operation. Milking Shorthorn breeders know this, but how can they spread the word? The American Milking Shorthorn Society has brochures available detailing the versatility of the breed. Thank you to Whispering Hills Farm for their generous donation to print this brochure. Also a thank you to Whispering Hills Farm and Nile Valley Milking Shorthorns for use of their photographs in the brochure.
