he winter board meeting was held the first week of December. Following are the motions and changes instituted by the directors for the benefit of the membership.
The Type Committee suggested the classification schedule be moved to every seven months versus eight months. This will both be an advantage for all young sire programs as well as the ability to collect more data. The motion was made and approved.
The registrations and transfers for 2015 are showing an increase to date. The board approved the 2016 budget as presented.
A sample registration paper was presented that included an RFID field below the Tattoo field on the registration paper. This could be an option for owners who do not want to register their animals using the 15-digit 840 number but they are still able to cross-reference with genomic results. The motion was made to add the RFID line under the tattoo field on all registration papers. The motion passed. A motion was made and passed to add the following recommendation: The Brown Swiss Association strongly recommends a tattoo be the permanent I.D. of the animal, however it is not required. However, if all forms of Permanent I.D. have been lost, parentage needs to be proven through parent testing at the expense of the owner. If this cannot be validated the animal will revert to ID. As of January 1, 2016, the following show results will be listed on pedigrees as approved by the board of directors: the top six placings at the International Show; the top three placings from the other national shows; class winners only from all other qualifying shows; All-American, Res. All-American and Hon. Men. All-American for all group class members. Brown Swiss Bulletin subscription fees were discussed with an increase approved by the board for 2017. 1st Class Fees 1 Year U.S. - $65 3 Year U.S. - $190 1 Year Canada & Mexico - $100 3 Year Canada & Mexico - $275 1 Year Europe-Central/South America-Pacific - $125 3 Year Europe-Central/South America-Pacific - $350 In regards to national shows, a motion was made and passed that a letter be sent to the management of California State Fair along with the California Brown Swiss Association stating the following: If show management does not manage and enforce the ultrasound procedures they will not be considered a national show. The current statement must also be removed from the State Fair Premium Book releasing the Brown Swiss Association from liability. It was also approved to remove the dry cow classes from all national shows. The committee recommended to the board that a 95-point cow be made attainable. The board approved the recommendation with the following rules as stated in the table at right. The first classifier will nominate the animal to become ‘EX95.’ Within 30 days a second classifier will score the cow and if that classifier scores her ’95’ it will become official. The breeder will pay the expenses of the second classifier up to a maximum of $500. A motion was made to reduce the Brown Swiss Bulletin editions published from 12 issues per year to 11, combining July and August issues into one. The board approved hosting the 2020 World Conference and approved these states hosting conventions through the year 2020: Minnesota – 2016; Ohio – 2017; Iowa – 2018; New York – 2019 and New England – 2020. 4

his year one cow took home both the Vernon C Hull Total Performance and Cow for All Seasons Awards from the 2015 show season. Velva Notter and the late Bill Notter of Holyoke, Colorado sponsor the Total Performance award in honor of Vernon C. Hull, a gentleman who had a tremendous impact on the improvement of the breed through the breeding program at Lee’s Hill Farm. The award is presented to the cow that produces the most lifetime milk in the least amount of days over two years of age combined with a high 305-day Energy Corrected Milk (ECM) record and places well in her respective classes at the national shows. Sponsored by Purebred Publishing of Columbus, Ohio, the Cow For All Seasons is also awarded based on the highest 305-day two-time ECM record at a national show and must be awarded to a cow in milking form. This year’s winner, Jonlee Secret Langwathby is no stranger to the winner’s circle. A 2014 National Bell Ringer and All-American nominee and the 2015 winner of the Total Performance and Nasco International Type and Production winner at two national shows this year, the 91-point Cutting Edge Secret ET *TM daughter is owned by Dalton Freeman of Bremen, Indiana. Bred by John and Lisa Roberts of Butterwick Farm in Vermont, she has a completed 4-00 300-day 3X record of 40,820M 5.1% 2,080F 3.5% 1,444P. Her High ECM is 50,681M. She is a member of the Nor-Bert Dairy which milks 140 head of Brown Swiss, Holsteins, Ayrshires and Jerseys using Lely robotic milkers.

Use of Linear Traits for Herd Improvement

or most purebred dairy cattle producers the emphasis in the classification is on final score. For many, final score is a marketing tool and a way to compare one herd with another herd. In addition, final score presents the impression to breeders of being able to see improvement from one generation to another. However, the most important role that classification plays is in providing genetic evaluations on specific traits. Classification results are converted into Predicted Transmitting Abilities (PTAs) that can tell us if a bull sires tall daughters that are narrow in the chest; or if he sires shallow udders with strong fore udders that are also weak in udder support; or if a bull sires a straight leg when viewed from the side on a strong pastern but his daughters severely hock-in when viewed from the rear. When you read the Type evaluation for a bull you will see numbers for the individual traits expressed as PTAs. For instance, Bull A is -1 for Stature, Bull B is 0 for Stature and Bull C is +1 for Stature. Intuitively you could conclude that on average, Bull A’s daughters will be shorter than Bull B and Bull C’s daughters, and Bull C’s daughters would be taller than Bull A and Bull B’s daughters if bred to the same cow. But what do the numbers mean? The PTAs for each trait are presented as standard deviations from the breed average for that trait. The average is recalculated at
every base change. The current base year is cows born in 2010. Logically you would expect that half the breed would be above average and half below average or that an average bull would have a PTA of 0. In this case a +1 for Stature indicates a bull’s average daughter, when that bull is bred to the average cow in the breed, will be taller than 84% of the breed: it does not tell you in absolute terms how tall the daughter will be. This point can be confusing. The first thought that comes into breeders’ minds when they see a +1 for stature is that it means the daughters will be one inch taller or some other similar unit. I think it is easier to think about our PTAs for linear traits as ranking percentile rather than a direct measure. From this perspective you can think of a bull that is +1 for a trait as being 84th percentile for that trait. (Note: we present Milking Speed in a different fashion with 100 being average and 5 points either way for each standard deviation. The older I get, the more I like that approach. Many countries present their type and management evaluations in such a fashion. I think it is easier for producers to understand that system and not overreact to negative numbers like we can see in Stature, Strength, Thurl Width, Body Depth, etc. ) The next complexity to think about when looking at linears is if a positive number is always what you want. In Milk, Fat, Protein, Productive Life and Fertility higher numbers are always considered better. But think about those in comparison to Somatic Cell, Sire
Calving Ease, Sire Stillbirth, Daughter Calving Ease, and Daughter Stillbirth where lower numbers are better. Higher is not always better! Not too many people will argue that you can ever have too high or wide a rear udder; positive numbers perhaps are always better. But what about Teat Length? Zero is average for a breed in Teat Length, negative numbers indicate shorter teats and positive numbers longer teats; perhaps 0 is not only average but ideal? The same issue arises with Rump Angle, positive numbers indicate more slope, negative numbers high pins; Rear Legs-Side View, positive numbers more set, negative numbers straighter legs; for Teat Placement positive numbers are closer, negative numbers are wider. Or consider Stature, can you get your animals too tall? Or too Strong/Dairy/Deep Bodied? In closing, think about linear type traits as differences from breed average presented as standard deviations, not as direct measurements. When looking at the numbers consider that the numbers tell you the direction on that trait from breed average, not the absolute value or economic worth. In some cases a negative number might be preferred over a positive number for a corrective mating, in other cases a positive number might be preferred. In all cases always ask questions and continue to study and learn.
Dan Rieder, Dist. V Director & breeder comments on using sire information: What is the first thing you look at when proofs are released? I look at the highest PPR bulls then concentrate on the highest four or five bulls with that index and then look for the highest type ones from among those. Feet and legs, udders and Daugnter Pregnancy Rate (DPR) rank up there high on the list too. We tend to hear about the problem with the breed not getting cows pregnant and as a breed we need to concentrate on this and use high DPR bulls. Where do you look to get your information first? The internet. Sites such as the Brown Swiss Association (www.brownswissusa.com) and Dairybulls.com is another good site for Brown Swiss bull information. When choosing a bull to use - what main factors do you consider for your herd? I rank the top four or five emphasizing udders, feet and leg composite, milk production, DPR, and fat and protein test. To me, if cows don’t have good feet and legs they can’t get around and won’t last long and if they don’t have good udders - they can’t push large volumes of milk through poor udders. DPR is a main issue - we need to get cows pregnant. As a breed we need to focus on getting cows pregnant. For me overall, cows have to produce a lot of milk and produce for a long time. How or do you work genomic information into selections? Almost every bull is genomic tested and it goes back to type and DPR. I look at genomics for young sires because it gives a prediction of what they are supposed to transmit. It’s a tool - diehard type breeders will use type bulls and young sires with high type numbers which come from genomics, regardless if they say they don’t. What advice do you have for young people or new breeders on utilizing genetic information? First, genomics is a useful tool and use it as a tool - it’s not 100% accurate but it’s a guide. Use it in relative terms - if udder composite is a 2.0 vs .5 then the obvious better udder bull is the 2.0. Use it as a tool for selection. Milk production, DPR and functional type should be a guide for young people. We need to keep the feet and legs strong and continue to produce good quantities of high solid milk that the breed is known for and we need to protect that. To me that’s the important factors along with the more animals tested for genomics the more accurate it will become. 8

The Harvest Royal Sale, held December 5 in Elkhorn, Wisconsin, finished with an average of $3010 on 64 head selling to 11 states. Topping the event at $13,500 was a special senior two-year-old from Double W Dairy., Holyoke, Colorado, Double W Pepp Clara ‘V87/88MS’. She was the Reserve Intermediate Champion and first Sr. Two and Best Udder of the 2015 Southwest National Show. She is a Cayenne Pepper out of Vinra James Cathryn. After a three horse race, John Cunningham, of R-John Holsteins, Petaluma, California, with Allyn Paulson and Tammy Voegeli of Wisconsin, emerged the winner over contenders Goldfawn Farm of Texas and Elite Dairy, New York. The last drop of the gavel produced the second-high seller at $4,600. Double W Pepper Delight ‘V85/85MS’ is a senior two-year-old who just finished with 25,546M and sold due in March. In Memoriam Jeremy Dwayne McDonald, 39, of Middletown, Virginia, died Friday, December 11, 2015. Mr. McDonald was born in 1976, in Winchester, Virginia, the son of Gary W. and Sharon R. McDonald. Jeremy was a graduate of Sherando High School. He was a farmer on the family farm “Shen-Val Farm” and a livestock judge that traveled the world. He was very passionate in showing cattle and lived for farming. Jeremy enjoyed wrestling and was the first Regional Champion from Sherando High School. He was a Virginia FFA State Star Farmer and won many state, regional and national livestock competitions. Jeremy had a great insight for people. He never met
a stranger at a cow show, had a great love for family and would never “cut himself short,” always giving his absolute best in everything that he did. He married Melissa A. “Missy” Purtlebaugh on December 24, 2002, in Winchester, Virginia. Surviving with his wife and parents is his son, Tyler J. McDonald. His sister, Brandie Jo McDonald, preceded him in death. Services were held Thursday, December 17. In lieu of flowers, arrangements are being made for memorial contributions to be sent to a trust fund for Tyler.
