You know the World Ayrshire Conference is coming to the U.S. in 2016. You know the dates are September 20 – October 9. The conference will start in New England at the Eastern States Exposition and thread down to the MidAtlantic region, go across the Mid-West and end in Madison, Wisconsin with the World Dairy Expo. There will much to see, lots to learn and new friends to meet. So, what does all this mean for U.S. breeders? Engage! We know the conference is long, and covers a great geographic area, making it very difficult for many U.S. Ayrshire breeders to participate in the entire event. You can pick portions to attend a’la carte. We encourage you to meet up with the tour as it goes, even if it’s for an afternoon or two days. We will pro-rate the fees for the portions you can attend. Contact the ABA or a member of the core planning committee, and we will do our very best to accommodate your needs. Support! There is lots of planning that goes into preparing for an event of this size and scope. We can use your support. Do you have vendors that might support the conference? We have materials already prepared that you can utilize in soliciting their donations. The ABA has a special fund for this event; the more contributions we get, the more we can promote U.S. Ayrshire breeders and genetics. Are you curious about how Ayrshire breeders are faring in other countries? Come and meet our guests, engage them in conversation, and make them feel welcome. Do you have a few hours you can volunteer to help during the World Ayrshire Federation meetings or maybe in the World Dairy Expo booth? We will need manpower and much positive energy to get all of the tasks completed. Market! Take advantage of this opportunity to share what you’re doing in your herd with our international guests, and your fellow American breeders. The September/October issue of the Ayrshire Digest will be the special world conference issue. There will be ads and articles from each member country of the World Ayrshire Federation. All advertisers will have the opportunity to have their ad displayed in a special World Conference section online at Dairy Agenda Today. Many extra copies will be printed and sent to all member countries, as well as being online. This will be THE issue you don’t want to miss advertising your Ayrshires. The deadline is July 25, 2016. The Ayrshire Yearbook has been growing and improving every year since its inception. Copies of it will be presented to all international guests at the conference, as well as placed in the ABA booth at World Dairy Expo. Again, you won’t want to miss this special opportunity to participate. Promote the best cows and heifers in your herd, along with a color photo for each, pedigree/production information and anything else noteworthy about the animal. The cost is just $100 per animal, or a discounted rate of $75 per cow when you advertise four or more. Every Ayrshire herd in the U.S. should be represented in the Yearbook, whether it be your high producers, flush cows, show cows, promising heifers and more! Bulls with semen being marketed may also be advertised in the Yearbook. The deadline is August 1, 2016. A virtual farm tour will be put together consisting of all U.S. Ayrshire owners who want to participate. It will be shown on the tour bus monitors, and all conference attendees will receive a copy of the complete virtual tour on a jump drive so that they may share the experience with others at home. The fee is $150, and the participation deadline is June 1, 2016. In other international marketing activities the ABA has conducted over the years, we’ve learned from the U.S. Livestock Genetics Export (USLGE) program that for approximately every $1 US invested, there is the potential for $7 US in return. Breeders are hungry for information, and they eagerly share with each other. Learn! Phase III will begin with the World Ayrshire Federation meetings, and we encourage everyone to attend. We anticipate that these few days will have the largest attendance of the conference. In addition to conference guests, we have invited industry professionals and others of interest. Each member country will give a presentation explaining the status of the

Mid-Atlantic National Junior Ayrshire Show – Harrisburg The Mid-Atlantic Naitonal Junor Ayrshire show was held September 14th as part of the All-American Dairy Show in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Judged by Tom McCauley, 121 quality junior-owned animals were paraded across the shavings. The first-prize Winter Calf caught judge McCauley’s eye and went on to be named Junior Champion. “She’s big, she’s tall, she’s deep and she’s dairy,” said McCauley of Sco-Lo Dream Mistress-ET, a Nexus Dreamer daughter exhibited by Tyler Bruchey of Westminster, Maryland. Mistress is out of a Nominated AllAmerican VG-88 Loto, followed by an EX93 second dam who was All-American in 2007. “The heifer that follows closest is the March calf,” said McCauley as he named Mowry’s Gibbs Cayenne the Reserve Junior Champion for Jordan Helsley of Roaring Spring, Pennsylvania. Cayenne is a Palmyra Reality Gibbs-ET daughter of a Pyrennes, followed by a VG second dam who was Reserve All-American in 2010. Intermediate Champion was the tall, impressive first-place Senior Three-YearOld, Cedarcut Burdette Clove Colata, exhibited by Erin Curtis-Szalach of Cazenovia, New York. The Palmyra TriStar Burdette-ET daughter is scored EX-90 and is out of a VG-88 Ambush, followed by an EX-91 Masterpiece. “What a beautiful, dairy, balanced cow she is,” commented McCauley. “There’s not a lot of holes in this cow.” He then named another Burdette daughter Reserve Intermediate Champion for Britney Hill of Bristol, Vermont. Hall’s Burdette Ha-Ha-ET, the first-place Senior Two-Year-Old, repeats her success from last year, when she was Honorable Mention All-American Yearling in Milk. Ha-Ha is backed by two EX-93 dams, both with AllAmerican honors. For his Senior Champion, Judge McCauley went with the Aged Cow who he called a “milk tank with wheels,” FourHills Tdent Snoopy 2634, exhibited by Britney Hill. Snoopy, an EX-93 daughter of Ardrossan-EV Kates Trident *TF, was Unanimous All-American in 2011 and 2012. McCauley followed her with the Cont. on pg. 8

Poinsettia, an EX-90 daughter of Kellcrest Avenger-ET exhibited by Cassandra Plummer of Galena, Maryland, was Junior All-American in 2014 after being named the Grand Champion of two National Junior Shows. She is backed by a VG-88 Chancellor. McCauley named his Intermediate Champion, Cedarcut Burdette Clove Colata Grand Champion of the show for Erin Curtis-Szalach, stating, “She’s the cow who can do the most damage down the road this fall. I just fell in love with this three-yearold in her class and I haven’t fallen out of love yet.” McCauley then named his Senior Champion, Four-Hills Tdent Snoopy 2634, Reserve Grand Champion for Britney Hill. Queen’s Corner Hello Everyone!, Fall is coming in strong a n d the further we go it seems the more work that needs to be done. Many of you I know are happy to finally be back home from Madison for a break before your next big adventure. I always enjoy being able to see everyone in Madison, and of course, the beautiful Ayrshires we all love. Many of you also know that Madison took an unexpected turn for quite a few of us which led me to thinking a lot about the value of family. We all know what it means to grow up on a family farm or what a lot of people believe is a family farm. No matter the size, big or small, family is always involved in the farm is some way or another such as my mom and sister, who always get to travel with me almost everywhere I go, and then my brother and father who usually stay behind to manage the dairy and show cattle we left at home. As we get close to Thanksgiving we need to all be thankful for family. Every person plays an important role in our life and with the future of our Ayrshires. It was good to see everyone in Louisville again! Happy New Year! ~Leanne

he International Ayrshire Show was held Tuesday, September 29th. The all-day event consisted of an impressive 265 head that were paraded for judge Mary Creek of Hagerstown, Maryland and her associate Selwyn Donald of Featherston, New Zealand. The deep-quality heifer show consisted of 139 head and came to a conclusion with the naming of Sco-Lo Dream Mistress-ET as the Junior Champion of the show for Tyler Bruchey of Westminster, Maryland. Mistress, a Nexus Dreamer daughter, was also the Junior Champion of the open and junior shows at Harrisburg. She is out of a VG-88 Loto with an All-American Nomination and her granddam is an EX93 Reno who was All-American in 2007. Several of Mistress’ maternal sisters also placed extremely well in heifer and cow classes. Reserve Junior Champion honors went to last year’s Honorable Mention Jr. AllAmerican Winter Calf, Family-Af-Ayr Burdette Destiny-ET, shown by Kristin Allen of Cecil, Wisconsin. A Burdette daughter, Destiny is out of an EX-90 AllAmerican Nominee whose dam is the legendary A.I. bull mother and 2002 AllAmerican 5-Year-Old, Family-Af-Ayr DK Desiree EX-95 4E. Her title helped FamilyAf-Ayr Farm of Caledonia, Illinois achieve the Premier Breeder of the Heifer Show banner, while Steve Searles of Stillmore Cattle Company, Pine Island, Minnesota took home the Premier Exhibitor of the Heifer Show title. While there was a whopping 126 head

of milking cattle shown, when it came down to it, one cow truly stole the show: Cedarcut Burdette Clove Colata, shown by Erin Curtis-Szalach of Cazenovia, New York, was named Intermediate and Grand Champion of the show. The EX-90 Burdette is the daughter of a VG-88 Ambush, then an EX-91 Masterpiece and was Honorable Mention All-American in 2012 and was the Reserve Grand Champion at Harrisburg earlier in the year. Judge Creek then named Reserve Intermediate and Grand Champion as the second-place Senior Three-Year-Old, Ski-Pal L G Kalina, commenting on how incredible the pair looked together. Kalina, the Reserve All-American Senior TwoYear-Old in 2014, is a daughter of BroneAyr Loto Greg-ET and has a two-year-old record of 5.0% fat. Her granddam is an EX93 Lot with multiple All-American honors. Senior Champion went to Right-Angle T Harley, the winning 100,000 Lb. Cow for Yarrabee Cows and Ski-Pal Ayrshires of Brooklyn, Iowa. Despite being the oldest cow in the ring, her youthfulness of mammary system was outstanding. She is an EX-94 4E daughter of Right Angle BBBK Traveler with 139,959M 4,977F 4,525P LTD with eight All-American nominations and two All-World titles. Reserve Senior Champion was awarded to the winning Aged Cow, Vieux Village C. Diamond, shown by Florent, Vicky & Bianca Foley of Piopolis, Quebec. The EX-95 2E CAN Cedarvale Charleston daughter was the Grand Champion of the International Show in 2014 and is backed by an EX-93 6E CAN B B Kellogg. Grand-View Sumtotal Divot was named

the Total Performance Cow for Timothy & Katie Busch of Cecil, Wisconsin. The high-placing production cow is an EX-94 3E daughter of Maple-Dell Sum Total with 5-10 365 29,390M 3.8% 1,113F 3.2% 942P and over 101,000M life to date. Dot, an EX-92 Calimero daughter, has a 3-07 record of 365 29,290M 3.9% 1,137F 3.1% 920P. Family-Af-Ayr Farm was announced the Premier Breeder & Exhibitor of the show while they were in the ring capturing the first-place Exhibitor’s Herd. The State Herd banner went to Iowa. The Junior Champions of the junior show were also Junior Champions of the open show. Sco-Lo Dream Mistress-ET repeated her feat of winning open and junior shows at Harrisburg by taking the banners home that day. She is a Nexus Dreamer daughter of a VG-88 Loto then an EX-93 Reno who was exhibited by Tyler Bruchey of Westminster, Maryland. Reserve Junior Champion was Family-Af-Ayr Burdette Destiny-ET, the winning Winter Calf for Kristin Allen of Cecil, Wisconsin. Destiny is a Burdette granddaughter of the legendary Family-Af-Ayr DK Desiree EX95 4E, dam of Doublwhammy and Dozer. Juniors stayed strong into the cow classes, with the Intermediate and Grand Champion of both junior and open shows being named Cedarcut Burdette Clove Colata for an ecstatic Erin Curtis-Szalach of Cazenovia, New York. The EX-90 Burdette daughter was also Grand Champion of the junior show at Harrisburg earlier in the year and was the Total Performance Cow of the International Junior Show as well. The Reserve Intermediate Champion honors went to the second-place-junior Senior Three-Year-Old, Starlight-Acres Edge Cinabun, shown by Sydney Kleingartner of Gackle, North Dakota. The EX-90 Bar-Vue Edge daughter was Honorable Mention Jr. All-American in 2013.

Taking home Senior and Reserve Grand Champion banners was Bar-Vue BBK Goldy-ET for the Kruses of Dyersville, Iowa. The first-junior Aged Cow is an EX91 BBBK who was most recently named All-American Aged Cow in 2014. She has over 101,000M life to date. Reserve Senior Champion was named GarnetLane Avenger Poinsettia, last year’s Grand Champion of the International Junior Show. She is an EX-90 Avenger with five Junior All-American nominations, including one win, and is owned by Cassandra Plummer of Galena, Maryland. Spring Heifer Calves (14) 1. From All-American Dairy Show

Dr. Douglas Evans, DVM, owner-operator of Sunny Acres Farm of Georgetown, NewYork, was the recipient of the 2015 Obie Snider Award, the top honor of the All-American Dairy Show. Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding presented the award at the show’s Dairy Farmer Appreciation Banquet on Monday, September 14, at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center. The award, established in memory of Obie Snider of Bedford County, Pennsylvania, a founding father of the All-American Dairy Show, recognizes an individual who places significant value in service to the industry and community and displays high standards of conduct. “The All-American is a success because of the longstanding dedication, participation and support given by those who love this show,” said Redding. “Dr. Evans embodies that commitment to the show and the industry through his involvement in many avenues. He is an ambassador and continues the legacy of excellence inspired by Obie Snider.” As a full-time large animal veterinarian who farms 245 acres and milks a registered herd of Ayrshires, Evans keeps busy. For 33 years, he and his family have traveled to Harrisburg, bringing an outstanding show string of registered Ayrshires to compete in the All-American Ayrshire shows. The Obie Award winners are recognized for their character, laudable ethics, a high level of professionalism, leadership within their profession, and civic and public community service. Dr. Evans is a highly respected veterinarian and leader within the Ayrshire community. He is the sixth generation on the family farm, and his children have now taken on management roles in further developing the herd and farm. Nationally, Evans has served on the Board of Directors of the U.S Ayrshire Breeders Association for more than 25 years, recently completing a term as the president of the association. The herd has won more than 20 Constructive Breeder Awards and numerous French Trophy recognitions for national production. Evans is a graduate of Cornell School of Veterinary Medicine and is the owner of the Georgetown Veterinary Practice that specializes in bovine work. His leadership and service to his community are evident in his membership in the Ayrshire Sire Committee of the Eastern AI Cooperative, the Madison County Cooperative Extension Board, the Otselic Valley School board and the Georgetown Planning Board. Evans is an internationally recognized judge, officiating at the Canadian Royal Winter Fair, the International Ayrshire Show in Quebec, and numerous shows across the United States. He officiated the All-American Guernsey Show in 1996, the Pennsylvania State Junior Dairy Show several times and also donated his time to judge the All-American Dairy Show Showmanship Contest. Sunny Acres Farm has found perennial success in the tanbark at the All-American. Sunny Acres has won the prestigious Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor banners at the All-American for a combined 16 times since 1991. Ten Ayrshire Grand Champions have been owned and exhibited by the Evans family since then as well. Evans and his Sunny Acres Farm team are known as avid Ayrshire enthusiasts and friends to fellow exhibitors, always willing to lend an animal to the All-American’s judging contest. Evans has given back in still other ways, as a class sponsor and member of the Show Advisory Committee for more than two decades. Doug and his wife Kathryn have four children. Andrew and Gregory are part of the family farm. Their daughter Laura and her husband are in the process of relocating to Houston, Texas, while other daughter Rachel is working as the calf manager for a large InVitro Fertilization (IVF) farm in Canada. Evans joins a group of outstanding recipients who share Snider’s visionary leadership for a stronger dairy industry. Previous Obie Snider Award winners are, in order of receipt: Donald Seipt, Easton; Creedin Cornman, Carlisle; David Patrick, Woodbine, Maryland; Berneta Gable, New Enterprise; Dieter Krieg, Lititz; George Cashell, Shippensburg; John Cope, Mechanicsburg; Janet Harding, Clarion; William Nichol, State College; Samuel Yoder, Shoemakersville and Jane Pepple, Oxford. 23

Raymond Jarratt

~ The Man Beh By Becky Payne, Executive Director

Top photo: Old friends Raymond and Doug Murray catch up on a beautiful summer day at the Jarratt ranch. Bottom photo: Like all doting granddaddys, Raymond supported his granddaughter Lynn Marie in the show ring.

Janet Jarratt’s Comments We chose Ayrshires originally in the 1950s because milk was priced with 4% butterfat as the base, which was consistent with the Ayrshire breed. Because of the pricing of milk above and below 4% butterfat, producing milk exactly at 4% was the most profitable, and Ayrshires were the logical choice. Over the years even as pricing structures changed, Ayrshires proved to be very efficient in utilizing feed for milk production. Additionally, in the commercial setting that we have, the Ayrshires have proven to be highly resilient to widely fluctuating weather conditions. In New Mexico, our dry lot operation has experienced years of drought with temperatures at 105 degrees and 3% humidity, and 40 degree temperature changes from day to night is typical. The Ayrshires have proven very tolerant of that condition, more than any of the other breeds we’ve had with them. Our winters generally are snowy with hard freezes in late May, and winter daily temperature fluctuations almost matching that of summer, conditions in which the cows also prove very tolerant. The newborn Ayrshire calves are very vigorous, up, moving and nursing quickly. The cows are very aggressive feeders, able to compete in any situation. The Ayrshire cow’s udder quality, hardiness, adaptability, and strong character is an essential combination for us in today’s world of commercial dairy.

L

ife as a dairy farmer in New Mexico is different from what most Ayrshire breeders can imagine. Over the years, many of us have gleaned small glimpses through our interactions with Ayrshire breed patriarch, Raymond Jarratt. Raymond has served the Ayrshire Breeders’ Association over a broad expanse of years in varying capacities, including committee member, board member, vice president and two separate terms as president. His infectious laugh and stern comments, when the occasion required them, will long be fondly remembered. Shady-Dale Farms, LLC, located in Los Lunas, New Mexico, is owned by Raymond and Fenella Jarratt and their adult children: Karen, Ray Jr. and Janet. The herd is milked twice daily, with 320 cows averaging 53 pounds of milk per day in the heat of summer. Nearly 75 2-year-olds freshened by summer’s end. Optimally, the family likes to be milking 350-360 head. To keep everything in perspective, picture this: The Shady-Dale herd is the largest registered Ayrshire herd in the U.S., yet they are the smallest dairy herd in the state of New Mexico. The average dairy herd size in New Mexico is 2,500 milking cows; and they also get some of the highest production averages per cow in the U.S. Weather conditions in New Mexico can vary greatly. Raymond recalls temperatures dropping to -25 degrees during the winter of 1971/1972, and -17 just last year. ShadyDale Farm has never sold an animal in a public sale, mostly because of the trucking costs to get animals to the more highly populated Ayrshire territories. Even their method of finding and retaining good

employees is unique in comparison to many other farms. Raymond has found over the years that it is helpful to keep the families of employees close to increase their happiness. He currently has employees that are brothers, with one having his son helping during summers. It has enabled them to retain very loyal employees, with one of the brothers growing into the foreman position over his almost 20 years. Components are a very serious consideration when looking at what genetics to use in the herd. Raymond feels strongly that feed and genetics go hand-inhand. The only difference is that he has the ability to change and improve the genetics he uses, while sometimes feed quality consists of using the best available for the season. The Jarratts started feeding hominy instead of corn five years ago. In addition, the herd gets dried distillers grain, cotton seed, canola and corn silage. In the early to mid-1970s, the dairy consisted of two separate herds; with Ayrshires and Holsteins bred AI. At the time, they had 60 daughters of the Holstein bull, Elevation. Raymond thought to be a good breeder, he had to go one way or another with registered cattle. The advantages of the Ayrshire breed won out – the initial cost per animal was lower, greater income from higher components, lower maintenance costs, and hardier and more heat and cold tolerant stock. Raymond says these same breed advantages exist today, and have thrived despite the recent extremes of weather the Southwest has experienced. The Jarratts are always scouring the A.I. lists looking for bulls that will provide outcross genetics for the herd, while continuing their tradition of high components and Ayrshire purity. It’s a great

Mentors and Memories

Raymond Jarratt has a steep history with the Ayrshire breed, as a breeder and a servant to the Ayrshire Breeders’ Association. He served as ABA president on two occasions and was a World Ayrshire Federation president. He was honored by the ABA with the Distinguished Service Award in 1996.

If you want a glimpse into what this herd looks like, visualize this scenario. On their first classification round, 219 cows were evaluated, including 95 first lactation cows and 71 second lactations. There were nine Excellent, 98 Very Good and 102 Good Plus cows. The average score was 84.4. Of the Excellent cows, 30% were sired by their own bulls. The second time with the classifier, the herd again excelled. There were 132 cows evaluated with 47 first lactations and 46 second lactations. The average score was 85.6 with 13 Excellent, 77 Very Good and 42 Good plus. Now that they are in the classification cycle, the Jarratts are surely focusing on their young cows. The most recent classification yielded an average of 84.5 with 49 first lactation cows and 13 second lactations. There were six Excellents, 34 Very Good and 26 Good Plus cows. Giving back to the community… In his mid-90s! It won’t come as a surprise to anyone in Ayrshire circles that Raymond Jarratt Cont. on pg. 30

Q: Why Ayrshires? A: The first 10 Ayrshires were purchased around 1953 from Ohio breeders with help from Ohio association secretary Griff Roberts. Raymond joined the Association right after that. He remembers Good Acres Triumphant, a bull marketed from COBA. The Ayrshires were very heat tolerant and hardy. Some would be out eating in the heat all day while the Holsteins would seek the shade. Q: What are the most influential cows to you? A: There were many Betty daughters that I liked. Q: Who were your mentors? A: When my wife and I attended our very first Ayrshire convention, Merritt Cook and his wife took us under their wing, introducing us to other people, making us feel welcome. This made a big difference to us, and got our participation in the Association off to a good start. Louis Zumbach was an honest, upstanding man who always had the Ayrshire breed at heart. Doug Dodds was an all-around cow man. He taught me a lot about cattle and how to deal with people. David Gibson was a very influential executive secretary. Tom Whittaker knew a lot of Ayrshire history. He knew the people and the mechanics of the Association; and it was valuable. There are lots of people I can name that are good friends, and have helped whenever needed. However, I have to say that, without John Dalton and Doug Murray for support and help, things might have been very different for me. Q: What herds did you admire and why? A: There were several Kansas breeders that had great herds, such as G. Fred Williams, Willy Watson and the Alford Family. Q: What was your most memorable moment? A: There are too many to name. Lots of annual conventions, board meetings, sales and other Ayrshire gatherings are among my fondest memories. One time that does stand out is the emotion I had when, as President, I had to ask the board to sell the building in Brandon, VT. On the lighter side, another is when the Association auctioned off my white hat to benefit the youth fund. I still have the hat! Hosting International Visitors By Sharon Tentinger The Hurlstone Agricultural High School is located one hour southwest of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, consisting of 260 acres. Greg McAlphin, Chris Castle Deputy and Karen Johnson, instructors at the high school, along with 13 students and chaperones, came to tour Iowa from August 11th to September 9th. Katie Steinlage, an embryologist employed with Trans Ova Genetics, assisted Greg coordinating the tour. Their goal was to see Iowa farms that were involved in beef, sheep, swine and dairy. Other sites included a John Deere factory, Field of Dreams, a yogurt dairy farm, Trans Ova Genetics, colleges and many other points of interest. The school has over 900 students from all over the state. It includes the 7th grade to the 12th grade. One hundred of these students board at the school. Their farm consists of boer goats, a nine-sow intensive piggery, Suffolk and first cross ewes, Limousin herd, layer hens and a commercial dairy. The dairy includes a milking herd of approximately 50 cows twice a day, producing roughly 400,000L a year. They are milked in a half, six-stall herringbone. The herd is predominately registered Ayrshires and the farm is one of the oldest Ayrshire studs in the state. On Sunday, August 30th, TenAyr Dairy

at Remsen, Iowa, hosted a noon luncheon for the group. They toured the farm and its facilities. Jim Tentinger said “They were pleased to see so many Ayrshires at one place and were surprised to see the Ayrshire steers. In Australia, there is no market for dairy beef cattle. They asked many questions about our rations and the freestall barn. On the Hurlstone farm all cattle are grazed in paddocks.” Dr. Donna Mertz also was there to answer any questions regarding the genetics of the herd. She said, “It was great to have the opportunity to meet with these students and educators from Australia. I really enjoyed discussing A.I. sires available in both countries as well as the differences in management and veterinary practices. Even though we live in different parts of the world, the love of the Ayrshire cow made our time together feel as though we were old friends. I am excited to nurture and maintain the new friendships made today.” Their next stop included Plymouth Dairy near LeMars, Iowa, which includes over 3,000 head of milking Holsteins. They were able to watch how corn silage is harvested and stored in a large bunker. This was an unusual activity for the students and many questions were answered. During the following week, the group visited P & A Ayrshires near Dyersville,

Iowa. Tom Kruse said the students were interested in watching him mix the TMR and asked about the silage bags and how they were filled. They had never seen a tiestall barn and learned how the cows were fed in the barn with an electric cart. Sires were discussed along with seeing how the Kruses prepare their show animals. The Hurlstone students also show their Ayrshires throughout the year. The first show is in January, The International Dairy Show, which is the biggest dairy show in the southern hemisphere. They won Junior Champion Ayrshire with their heifer, Hurlstone Maybel Twilight, in 2014. The Sydney Royal Easter Show is their state show where over one million people walk through the gate each year. In 2015 Hurlstone won production awards as well as placing in several classes. At this show the students compete in fitting, parading Cont. on pg. 28

In 2014 their heifer, Hurlstone Major Finale, won the under one-year old heifer class in the 2014 All World Ayrshire Photo Competition. Jamie Whybrow commented, “At Hurlstone we are exposed to many incredible opportunities involving all farm animals, especially Ayrshires. We are very lucky that our school is involved with this breed and hope that many students and youth get the same opportunities to develop the passion for the dairy industry and Ayrshires.” Jamie has plans to go into animal medicine and become a veterinarian. Sarah Ludington has the goal to go into livestock production following her years at Hurlstone. She said, “We looked forward to experiencing and exploring the American Ayrshire community during our agricultural tour of Iowa. We are thankful to the host families for giving us this opportunity and their hospitality.” Katie Steinlage enjoyed being with this group. She said, “They were impressed with the neatness and the farms kept so clean throughout Iowa. Some of these students plan on coming back to the U.S. to attend the 2016 World Ayrshire Conference. They were impressed with the genetics of the Ayrshire cattle.”

Lang named International Person of the Year at World Dairy Expo

Kevin Lang has been the driving force behind the expansion of the Ayrshire breed in South Africa, one of the fastest growing Ayrshire populations in the world. Though his roots weren’t in the dairy industry, Lang seized the opportunity to start his own dairy farm when Wolworths, a local grocery chain, launched an exclusive line of Ayrshire products in 1990. Demand quickly grew and Lang expanded his business by processing milk from other local Ayrshire producers.

Lang was an early innovator in South African genetics, developing one of the highest-type Ayrshire herds in the world. Sourcing genetics worldwide, he breeds for showring type that is consistent with his production goals. In the showring, he has exhibited 21 Champion cows and received the South African National Show Gold Cup Trophy four times, an honor no other South African breeder has achieved, with his Grace Valley Ayrshires. Lang has worked diligently to improve

the South African dairy industry, founding the Sengai Trust which works to create strategic alliances between the government and farmers to benefit farm workers through skill transfer and land reform. He has been active with the South African Ayrshire Society and served as president of the World Ayrshire Federation. Kevin and his wife, Shannon, and their three adult children, Rachel, Caiden and Bethany, reside in Howick, KwaZulu-Natal.

and his family make giving back to their community a priority. There are no age barriers when it comes to a man with knowledge to share, a daughter who obviously shares his passion for agriculture and students willing to soak it up. Education has always been stressed in the Jarratt household. Raymond and Fenella and each of their children have college educations. The Jarratts’ county farm bureau (which Janet was president of) took on a project turning some state-owned land that had gone to desert back into a farm. The idea was for FFA members and agriculture classes at the high school to learn about soils, soil building and growing hay. The students would ultimately do the work, but the farm bureau would get it going. A scenario that we’re all familiar with, it ended up with Raymond, Janet and another board member doing the bulk of work. The first year they planted a few peanuts, some oats, and then peas to disc under and build up the soil. After that, alfalfa was planted. The ag farm is self-sufficient now, and supports the local ag program. The idea initially was to create an ag farm not only as a teaching environment, but also to earn

money to offset funding cuts the program was facing. So far it has been successful, and there are now beautiful fields right on main street in Los Lunas. Janet says, “Daddy was pretty inspirational to the kids. They couldn’t believe how old he is.” Farming with laser equipment after learning to farm with horses especially made an impression on them.

The World Ayrshire Event sale was held Wednesday, September 30 during the World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin. Ten live lots averaged a strong $4,437. The high selling lot was a very exciting choice of the two highest PPTI heifers in the breed. Sired by Kamouraska Rockstar, the two fancy March calves are out of the Nominated All-American Van-De Orkko Caitlin Corky EX-92 2E, the #4 cow on the August 2015 Elite CPI List. The calves boast two generations of Excellent dams with over 120,000M life each. The gavel struck just short of five figures at $9,900 for consignors Robert & Tiffany Hazeltine and family of Janesville, Wisconsin. Steve Rowley of Foxworth, Mississippi, purchased the choice. A pick of flush out of Sco-Lo Reality Maddie-ET and by a mutually agreeable sire was the second-high seller of the night at $6,200 to Alexis Winkler of Woodbine, Maryland. Maddie, scored VG-88 and by Palmyra Tri-Star Reality, was the winning Senior Two-Year-Old at the Central National Show the day before. In addition, two of Maddie’s maternal sisters were first in their respective class, with one, ScoLo Dream Mistress-ET, being the Junior Champion of both open and junior shows – a repeat from the Eastern National show earlier this fall. John Cannon of Dyersville, Iowa, consigned this promising choice. Mackinson FB Dinah-ET brought $5,800 for consignors Matthew and Mary Mackinson and Mike and Julie Hemp of Pontiac, Illinois. Sired by Terrace Bank Free Beer-ET, Dinah was the winning Spring Calf at the 2015 Illinois State Fair as well as placing fourth the previous day in the Central National Show. Her dam is Mackinson Oblique Darcy-ET EX-91, a two-time Junior All-American. Dinah sold entered in the upcoming show at Louisville November/December 2015

to Dakota Hall and Leanne Vanderlaan of Cushing, Oklahoma. New to the World Ayrshire Event this year was the opportunity of bidding online through Cowbuyer.com. There was a great amount of interest online, as 32 users bid 60 times. Two lots were even purchased online, and a total of 56 people tuned in via the internet.
