LOVELORN AT PROPAGANDA Lovelorn is the creative output of husband and wife team Anna & Patrick Troxell, formerly of the Philadelphia psych-noise band Creepoid. They call themselves “drug pop,” which is to say the music they play is somewhere between Morphine and Mazzy Star with a danceable backbeat. It’s not all that different from Creepoid in a lot of ways, but where that band existed on an obvious downbeat with, in some cases, hardcore influences, this newer outfit owes a debt to the electroclash scene of the early aughts. Still hailing from the City of Brotherly Love, Lovelorn make music that swirls around the room like cigarette smoke and vintage jazz. It wouldn’t seem out of place to imagine the duo sprawled out on bean bag chairs on shag carpeting with Portishead and Lee “Scratch” Perry records side by side, while underground disco records playing in the other room bleed into this disarming space. That may seem like an improbable set of intersecting musical lines, but sometimes things come together organically and just exude an idea that is 100% the sum of its parts without being derivative. So, maybe drug pop (or “Philly acid house,” as they also hashtag their work) is exactly the correct way to describe a sound of shoegaze-y vocals with muted dark tones and dance beats. Perhaps that’s a thing you’re into? I imagine drug pop is kind of a sexy night out with friends or a loved one. Perhaps the road that Lovelorn is traversing is the key to a whole new generation of people reared on punk rock, steeped in deep, breathy vocal patterns with throbbing bass lines and danceable beats? Lovelorn played SXSW in 2019 and are returning for this year’s edition. They have the podium, and while we wait to see what this new generation of listeners grows up to be, we can speculate watching this sexy and slightly interstellar-alien entity do its musical thing. For now you’ll still hear more of Lovelorn in person than through their small, allcassette discography. They’ve been teasing a first full-length album, and for fans it can’t arrive soon enough. Lovelorn, with Planet Loser, Glass Body, Real People play 8pm March 9 at Propaganda in Lake Worth. lovelornphilly.bandcamp.com ~ Tim Moffatt

BERLIN AT THE GROUND If it’s the perfect embodiment of emotional, high-energy, ’80s synth pop you want, it’s Berlin you will get. Formed in 1980 at the precipice of that musical era, front-woman Terri Nunn, and founding members John Crawford (bass/synth), and David Diamond (synth/guitar), Berlin wove themselves into the sleek fabric of the decade’s keyboardpowered sound.
BERLIN
They claimed their stake with massive hits such as “The Metro,” “Sex (I’m a …)” and the movie power ballad “Take My Breath Away.” To the dismay of their diehard fan-base, the band split in 1988 and didn’t play another show for over a decade. In that time, something beautiful must have cleared, because they have been back to touring and recording since the early 2000s. While staying true to their roots, Berlin’s sound has evolved, introducing an even darker, moodier temperament in more recent projects. Eight albums and four decades later, the band is kicking off their 40th Anniversary celebration in Miami just before their run as headliners aboard The 80s Cruise, a weeklong Caribbean voyage and floating nostalgia bash produced by Entertainment Cruise Productions. Co-headlining the kick-off show on land will be ’80s Scottish rockers Big Country. Audiences may be left awestruck at how, almost 40 years post-heyday, Big Country’s musicality and presentation are as energetic and entertaining as ever. This is probably because Big Country have been touring their own shows and festivals almost annually since their inception. With the success of Berlin’s 2019 album, “Transcendance,” and an impressive 2020 touring schedule, it seems there’s no clear end in sight for these ’80s icons. On Berlin’s YouTube page, Nunn says of their latest single and music video, “Animal,” “I wanted to film people of all ages enjoying their animal natures.” She credits video director Chad Michael Ward (Marilyn Manson and Combichrist) for perfectly capturing the essence of the song. The youngest heathen in the video is just 19, while the oldest is 76. Nunn, being badass at 58 herself, can surely attest to the age-defying animal power of pop. fem-ale brewfest A craft-beer drinker in the male-dominated world of micro brews, Frances AntonioMartineau decided a few years back that she wanted to address the gender imbalance in artisanal beer circles, and shine a light on women making waves with suds. It was a logical aim, considering AntonioMartineau’s role as founder of Fem Collective, a networking group for female entrepreneurs in South Florida. “I wanted to find a way to combine my two passions,” she tells PureHoney in an interview.

But that didn’t guarantee its success. The FemAle Brewfest debuted in 2017 in a small warehouse in Fort Lauderdale’s FAT Village arts district, with 15 participating breweries and, by the end of the day, a not-unimpressive 700 people attending. The festival has grown in participation and attendance every year since, Antonio-Martineau says. She expects the FEM-ALE BREWFEST upward trend to continue: The fourth FemAle Brewfest, set for March 21, is moving to bigger digs at the new Dania Pointe shopping center. “I expect to have about 30 breweries participating this year, possibly more,” AntonoioMartineau reports. “Currently I have four out-of-state breweries traveling to be a part of the festival, with more reaching out to me.” Along with more beer, there will also be an expanded menu of ways to enjoy the festival — talks, workshops, tailored festival experience packages, and even yoga. “I am working on developing the festival into a mini summit,” Antonoio-Martineau says. Count on Denielle Mizrahi to be there. A co-founder of Yeasty Brews, an artisanal beer maker in Lauderhill, Mizrahi says in an interview that this will be her second consecutive time as a participating vendor.

“Not only did I have a great experience last year, but my participation and friendship with Frances has inspired and empowered me to grow my involvement,” she says. Mizrahi says female brewers are often overlooked and underrated, even as key players like AntonioMartineau are doing essential work building female participation. “Females can be intimidated to pursue their passion of craft beer because it has been a male-dominated industry,” Mizrahi says. “But I see that starting to change.” More women are entering the beer industry, and as they do they’re finding different ways to connect with potential customers. Popular local breweries like Twisted Trunk in Palm Beach Gardens and LauderAle in Fort Lauderdale feature yoga on Sunday mornings. Antonio-Martineau sees her festival and a more female artisanal brew culture flourishing in tandem. “It is a celebration and a curated craft beer festival experience like no other in South Florida,” she says. FRANCES ANTONIO-MARTINEAU “Attendees will have the opportunity to explore and discover breweries from around the country, as well as talk beer with some of their favorite beer experts.” Theres a “Sensory Training” workshop led by by Kristen Lorow-Hunter, brand marketing coordinator at Funky Buddha Brewery in Oakland Park, and a Florida chapter member of the Pink Boots Society, which helps women develop everything from their brewing techniques to their beer palates. Lorow-Hunter is a Certified Cicerone — the trade’s title for hospitality workers who’ve proven their beer savvy through intensive courses and an exam. Her workshop will focus on avoiding common mistakes that crop up in craft beer brewing and handling. There’s also a presentation on “Fermentation Diversity” led by Michelle Pagano, a cider maker, gluten-free beer home brewer and Instagram influencer from New York. And Danii Oliver, owner of Brooklyn’s Island to Island Brewery, will be representing “Beersgiving,” a project to encourage veterans and military spouses to establish themselves in the brew trade. Scheduled speakers include: J. Nikol Jackson-Beckham, a Ph.D. communications professor who was recently named the first-ever diversity ambassador of the Brewers Association nonprofit trade group representing independent craft brewers; Megan Stone, a brewer, consultant and “beerfluencer” who has worked at Delaware’s Dogfish Head and other celebrated breweries; and Ren Navarro, a co-founder of Canada’s Society of Beer Drinking Ladies, and the founder of Beer. Diversity. “Through the fest, I hope to continue to inspire other women and young girls,” says Antonio-Martineau, “whether it be to get in the brewing industry or in a[ny] field that is male-dominated.” It’s true when they say the future (of beer) is female. FemAle Brewfest is 1-6pm Saturday at Dania Pointe, 139 S. Compass Way, Dania Beach. General admission $45 and includes admission from 3-6 p.m., unlimited beer samples and access to beer talks. Tickets prices vary for earlier entry at 1 and 2 pm, and for included workshops and packages. femalebrewfest.com. ~ Olivia Feldman

UPCYCLE ART AT 1909 If there is a growing consciousness away from self-absorption and toward an understanding of our fates as shared, events like Up-Cycle are one way this transformation can actually be carried out and lived. With hands-on sustainable sewing lessons, live screen printing, informational talks and more (wine will be served), it will be a day to learn the ins and outs of textile up-cycling — extending the life of clothing material, and decreasing consumption and waste. Up-Cycle’s partners are the vintage clothing retailer Goodwill Bluebox, the West Palm Beach co-working space 1909, and a local collective called Kärnl Moon that is focused on the well-being of underserved South Floridians. “Our intention is to educate and empower the community with tools and new skills to up-cycle their own clothing items at home, or to start buying up-cycled clothes,” the collective tells PureHoney in a written statement. Goodwill Industries is known worldwide for storefronts that collect and resell donated and vintage clothing, and provide jobs and job training in their communities. It was Gulfstream Goodwill in West Palm Beach that invented the wildly popular Goodwill Bluebox — veritable “mystery boxes” of donated apparel, 10-12 items per box, assembled by gender, size and type, and sold online for $19.99. Since Bluebox debuted in 2019, the brainchild of Gulfstream Goodwill Director of E-Commerce Jacob Adair, the parcels have been selling out in minutes after each week’s re-stock. Bluebox is fast becoming a brand, also selling salvaged vintage and curated clothes, including recycled tees with new screen printing, beyond the box. “The mission is to reduce textile waste by digging through our salvage piles before they get sent out as a textile export or go to a landfill,” Gulfstream Goodwill Digital Commerce Manager Joshua Simkowitz tells PureHoney. Bluebox proceeds are distributed to nonprofit causes that Goodwill regularly supports. “People have the power to change the narrative when it comes to the fashion industry by changing their buying habits,” the Kärnl Moon statement adds. UpCycle is putting that power into people’s hands to build a more interesting and livable world. Up-Cycle is 4-8pm Saturday, March 28 at the co-working space 1909 in West Palm Beach. Admission is free. goodwillbluebox.com, www.karnlmoon.com, weare1909.org/ ~ Freddie Zandt

Update the scene when Lewis, Ed, Bobby and Drew run afoul of the north Georgia locals in “Deliverance.” Chances are the soundtrack cue for that moment when the protagonists realize they’re all kinds of backwater fucked will be any track from the growing Dark Water Rebellion catalogue.
And there’s a reason as to why only this band could capture that sinking feeling: DARK WATER REBELLION Everglades water run through a strainer of goth, grunge and garage. Formed in South Florida in 2015, DWR quickly took to the road and crisscrossed the U.S. making temporary homes of Los Angeles and Las Vegas before settling back east in Cleveland in 2017. The core trio of guitarist/vocalist Brent Gorcie, drummer Danielle Romanowski and bassist Fabian Abarca have gelled well with their new environs in the world’s rock ’n’ roll capital. Their self-described (and accurate) “Southern Gothic Swamp Rock” has resonated with locals and these South Florida expats have become darlings of the Cleveland press, drawing routine accolades for musicianship and showmanship. Fans of the Cramps, roots rock and delta blues will find something within the numerous layers of their deceptively simple compositions. Driven by Gorcie’s gravel-hot vocals, voodoo guitar and the rock-solid precision of the rhythm section, DWR commands repeat listens. Their self-titled 2017 debut album showed teeth sharpened by the demands of the road, while their 2019 follow-up, “Macabre,” is a fine-tuned and deliberate effort displaying the maturity of a band knowing their instinct is on point. Their video for single “Chamensea,” directed by Gorcie, was filmed in Cleveland’s beloved punk dive Now That’s Class but the track’s name and drive, with the band and its Chilean bassist playing a “jam in C,” is a phonetic funny that bilingual South Florida will appreciate. DWR’s music would also benefit greatly for a vinyl release; it begs for the crackle and pops of dust living in the grooves. Their dark and gritty, hip-shaking live sets turn the “Deliverance” energy of the recordings into sweaty, juke-joint abandon. Think snake-handling, devil-on-yourshoulder sexiness — it’s the kind of good time that skirts the knife’s edge and that you won’t soon forget. Dark Water Rebellion perform 11 p.m. Thursday, March 12 at Respectable Street in West Palm Beach. darkwaterrebellion.com ~ Abel Folgar

BRIAN FALLON AT REVLIVE Moments of clarity come and go. For former Gaslight Anthem frontman Brian Fallon, it would be the nightly musical undressing of his soul on an acoustic tour that would bring him the clarity he needed to create his third solo album.
The New Jersey native’s natural storytelling talents were surely amplified in the decade he rocked out with the Gaslight Anthem, but his band hiatus since 2015 has also been time well-spent. With two well-received albums under his BRIAN FALLON belt, the upcoming third, “Local Honey” – due out later this month – shows a level of maturity and openness brought on by letting go. “Every single song is about right now,” Fallon said in a statement. “There’s nothing on this record that has to do with the past or even the future, it just has to do with the moments that are presented and things that I’ve learned and I’m finding in my day to day.” The genesis of “Local Honey” was a guitar and piano tour with The Hold Steady’s Craig Finn. The epiphany was a simple one, and the heartfelt acoustic songs Fallon performed on the road were later arranged for recording with multiple instruments. At eight songs, “Local Honey” is short, but the songs are fully fleshed out. At 40, Fallon has enough road travelled to be experienced but is young enough to exude hope without gimmick. Love, mental health and the quotidian take the spotlight in songs like “You Have Stolen My Heart” and “21 Days,” the latter directly connected to him acting on his therapist’s instructions to disconnect bad habits. Fallon and his backing band, Howling Weather, will support the album with an extensive North American and European tour. “This record is 100 percent about the day today. It’s not about these glorious dreams or miserable failures, it’s just about life and how I see it,” Fallon said. Also, of note: Consuming a locally sourced honey is a healthy and natural way of gaining clarity in a seasonal fog… and that’s a pro tip you should act on. Brian Fallon performs an all ages show 6:30 pm Wednesday March 18 at Revolution Live in Fort Lauderdale with Justin Townes Earle and Worriers. jointherevolution.net ~ Abel Folgar
CLAN OF XYMOX AT RSC Formed in the peaceful and prosperous Netherlands in the dawning ’80s, early dark wave terrors Clan of Xymox have never really gone away. Of the original trio, only frontman Ronny Moorings remains on board, but that hasn’t stopped the Clan from continuing to make shadowy synth-pop/ electro dance music that makes goth kids swoon in their caves.

Clan of Xymox celebrated nearly 40 years as a band by releasing “SHE,” a new single, on Valentine’s Day. How better to celebrate a holiday of love than with a band embraced by tormented dark wavers? Goths are romantics in their own way, even if they’re not happy unless they’re also feeling bereft. Valentine’s and Xymox are for them.

SPEAKEASY
Moorings recently told Spectrum Culture that he doesn’t mind being among the last of his cohort still active: “The fact that I actually like what I do and [am] interested in what is going on around me makes me still enthusiastic about music and the scene.” Early Clan had high-profile champions including the influential BBC disc jockey John Peel and their dark-hearted mates, Dead Can Dance, on the pioneering 4AD indie label. Clan of Xymox and bands of that ilk were staples in the ’80s and ’90s at South Florida venues like Kitchen Club and Squeeze. Their 1989 album and major-label debut, “Twist of Shadows,” is a goth milestone, and last year got a richly deserved anniversary reissue. “Without this album there would be no way forward at the time,” Moorings told CNET’s Download.com. “It was an album opening up a whole new dimension for the band.” Xymox have classified themselves as a rock band, but fit firmly in the dark wave niche that grew up around them. It’s not a bad place to be. The Cure are considered goth, too, yet they still have some pretty sunny tunes to jam out with your mom to on a long car ride. Heck, it’s entirely possible some of you millennials were conceived on a Saturday night after a Clan of Xymox set. So treat them well, and show respect for your weird parents’ twisted version of Barry White. Clan of Xymox with the Bellwether Syndicate play 8pm Saturday, March 21 at Respectable Street in West Palm Beach. clanofxymox.com ~ Tim Moffatt
