Thee Oh Sees, An Institution There are an awful lot of current bands aping about in the intersection between late ‘60s psychedelia and garage rock. However, while many of these bands will come and go after a night or two of Pitchfork’s cold lovin’, Thee Oh Sees have proved much more than just another flash in the pan -- they’ve become an institution.
Thee Oh Sees
Truth be told, John Dwyer’s brain baby has developed into an archetype of contemporary psych, providing attentive would-be’s with a format and queuing trends in sonic fashion, all while reminding us that a rock ‘n’ roll show should be knock-down, white knuckle experience worthy of a day off from work the following day or at the very least, a stiff bloody mary with breaky.
As Miami’s own psych/garage scene proliferates and enjoys watching native sons, Jacuzzi Boys, take the country and blogsphere by storm, news arrives that Dwyer and his San Franciscan sect of art rockers will be hitting the Magic City on November 4th for what will no-doubt be a night of reverb-fueled ass shaking, sweat, and theatrics. For those just getting turned on to Thee Oh Sees brand of jangle-borne space rock, the band’s massive discography can seem a bit daunting at first. After all, Dwyer and co are a most prolific team, and since the band’s inception as OCS, there have been around 30 releases that can be (arguably) considered a part of Thee Oh Sees’ oeuvre. Though they all bring something appreciable to the table, we say skip the EPs for now and settle into the whir and buzz of the band’s more recent studio full lengths, with special attention paid to Castlemania, Carrion Crawler/The Dream (both released in 2011), as well as the band’s most recent release, Floating Coffin. Thee Oh Sees will have The Blind Shake and OBN III’s in tow to provide opening fare and we recommend that you don’t sleep on either band. This is a Monday night show and if you’re operating on Miami standard time, you will probably miss the opening sets. Both bands bring a different perspective to the garage/ pscyh genre, with the Blind Shake operating in a realm relatively close to Thee Oh Sees, but with a touch more approachability. OBN III’s sound like what might have happened if Creedance Clearwater Revival had decided to drop acid and listen to the Stooges in October of ‘72 instead of breaking up. A Closer View of Serena A Closer View of Artist Serena Dominguez Fun loving artist and Miami native, Serena Dominguez, has made a career out of doodling. Starting at a young age, Dominguez took her propensity for doodling all the way to the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) where she received the Bachelor of Fine Arts for her work there. “I was always a doodler, in school especially. It felt natural to go to art school and now, here I am.” Dominguez works primarily in ink pen drawings and focuses on a subject matter that is as honest as it is amusing. “I’m inspired by imperfections in general – static AM radio, banged-up old things, kitschy things, clustered things, funny little things. I’m kind of a hoarder of useless trinkets.” Dominguez brings to life the personalities of people, places and things she finds remarkable in her illustrations and vignettes, portraits that Serena fade seamlessly into her very detailed and often stellar backgrounds. Though ink drawings make up the majority of Dominguez’s portfolio, the artist does not limit her creative talent to solely pen and paper. Between her profile website, serenadominguez.com, and her Facebook and Tumblr accounts, Dominguez offers more than 100 pictures of her original works spanning from sculpted installation art to a self-portrait of the young artist worked into a slice of burnt toast. Dominguez’s art can be viewed in person both wheatpasted outside of Gramp’s Bar in Miami’s Wynwood Art District (home to over 70 galleries, museums and artistic collections) and exhibited in the Gesamtkunstwerk Gallery, where the artist recently celebrated her first solo showing. Of Dominguez’s favorites at the exhibition, “Jungle Mayo” depicts a highly detailed jungle scene with a bottle of mayonnaise planted smack dab in the middle. Pieces like ‘Jungle Mayo’ show off Dominguez’s ability to blend various movements in art culture like pop art and surrealism. The Gesamtkunstwerk exhibition will run from now until November 23rd of this year. “Anything that comes my way!” says Dominguez when asked about upcoming projects. “I’m currently doing some album art for a friend’s band and making illustrations for a book about wild fruits and veggies in Florida. I have a few personal projects I’m working on as well – so far they make me laugh.” Whether it is comedic cartoon depictions of life’s everyday oddities or classic looking portraits that tickle your fancy, Dominguez offers something for every type of sketch art lover. Giving hope to every young doodler out there, Serena Dominguez is an individual definitely deserving of a closer view. ~Danielle DiSpigna

Scott Putesky Benefit Scott Putesky has long been a contributor to the local music community, from Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids to Three Ton Gate and Kill Miss Pretty. Putesky recently announced his colon cancer diagnosis, and our community has responded. Amy T. Baxter is heading up the organization of a benefit in his honor. Erin Engwall: How do you know Scott? Amy T. Baxter: I knew him before the Manson days from the Reunion Room. We all hung out there. Three years ago, I decided I was going to play music again (with Shaved Hamster) and called Scott up and asked him to produce my album. He said great! We became very close friends over the years.

EE: What is your favorite thing about working with Scott? AB: His kind heart, and his ability to create from a place of emotion. He asks “What do you want this song to convey?” You tell him, and he runs deep with it!
EE: What is Beat 4 Life? AB: The first Beat 4 Life was an event that I organized in 2007, for my sister, who had breast cancer. We raised $14k as a result of this event, which helped with her medical expenses, got her house out of foreclosure, and raised money for Holy Cross Cancer Center. Since this first event, I’ve wanted to do a second one. When Scott revealed the severity of his diagnosis, it kicked me into full gear. The title of the event was inspired by our one heartbeat, in the music community. All of us are unified by our common interests.” EE: What can patrons of the event expect on the evening of Beat 4 Life? AB: Live music beginning at 6pm. Confirmed bands include: Humbert, Shark Valley Sisters, Jim Camacho, Jim Wuerster, Carey Peak, A New Way to Live Forever, Steve Carroll & Chad Pheubus, Brian Franklin, Shaved Hamster, and Manifest Test Subjects. W Kelley Lucas is coordinating the art portion of the event. Some of the artists participating include Sas Christian, Colin Christian, Francesco Locastro, W Kelley Lucas, Skot Olsen, Rich Rethorn, and Coma Girl. More to be announced. There will be an online auction. Beat 4 Life, a Cancer Benefit for Scott Mitchell Putesky will take place at Churchill’s Pub on Saturday, November 16 at 6pm. Think Outside The Club For years, if you wanted to see Miami band Gold Dust Lounge play a show, you’d be better off avoiding typical rock haunts like Tobacco Road or Churchill’s. Instead, this trio has found itself providing esoteric instrumental color to nontraditional venues, including residences at the Standard Hotel and Wynwood Art Walk, Art Basel, the Hukilau festival of Polynesian culture and, outside of our region, the Corning Museum of Glass in Upstate New York. “When I put the Gold Dust Lounge together, I wanted to incorporate the environment as an element that would influence the performance,” recalls founder and guitarist Russell Mofsky, who has been digitally releasing music as Gold Dust Lounge since Gold Dust Lounge 2007. “I wanted to play atypical places where you might not expect to see or hear live music. I came at it from a different angle: Instead of being concerned whether a club has a good walk-in crowd, I looked for places where people were naturally gathering.” So instead of playing cramped stages for sweaty throngs – which Mofsky was no doubt accustomed to in his old band, legendary SoFla punk group Quit – he plays spacious hotels and galleries, where wine-sipping hipsters and tourists toe-tap to a sound so idiosyncratic that it would seem otherworldly in any space. Combining acid surf, spy-fi, and what has been called “soundtracks to imaginary films,” Gold Dust Lounge is retro kitsch with a dynamic, classically trained musical pedigree. Early GDL tracks like “Memorial Day,” which sounds like the sort of quietly spacey, meandering ambience Yo La Tengo released on The Sounds of the Sounds of Silence, gave way, in 2012, to the groovier and stranger Wynwood Bootleg, a collection of twangy lullabies for lonely cowhands, vintage surf music circa 1963, and a few examples of what Esquivel might call space-age bachelor pad music. Mofsky’s more recent material stretches his band’s generic footprint even wider, incorporating more jazz, classic country and afrobeat, while creating plenty of expansive sonic adventures in which to invent your own narratives. Members of Suenalo and Femi Kuti’s Positive Force Band even showed up for a couple of studio recordings for GDL’s forthcoming LP, Lost Sunset, its first physical release. It has been funded largely by a $16,000 Kickstarter campaign. “Roughly 75 percent of the pledges came from people I don’t know, many of who wrote to share their enthusiasm and passion for our music,” Mofsky says. “It’s incredibly gratifying to know that our music has reach and really matters to our listeners.” We’ll have to wait until at least January to buy the record, but fans can hear some of these songs live, as Gold Dust Lounge is just embarking on a new frontier: Palm Beach County. The band will play The Bamboo Room, 25 South J Street, Lake Worth, at 9pm Nov9. Tickets are $7 in advance or $10 the day of the show. Call 561-585-2583. ~John Thomason

Sweet Bronco
Sweet Bronco at Plan-B Block Party in Ybor City From the first few seconds of Sweet Bronco’s soon-to-be-released debut album, Morning Night, a pronounced schizophrenic influence shimmers forth that reveals this record as refreshingly original. It’s a wash of fuzzy shoegaze mixed with stomping, raw Americana. “It’s hard for me to separate out all the influences,” admits the band’s mastermind, singer/ guitarist Chris Horgan. “Shoegaze and Americana are big for me, but the Pixies and Radiohead are in there too. And then there’s all the great ‘60s bands – the Stones and Velvet Underground, the Left Banke and the Zombies, etc. I can’t isolate any specific area of music as being a primary influence. I strive to write good melodies to rhythms that make me want to move.” The title track recalls the lethargic quality of The Donkeys and their creeping slow-building psychedelic roots rock. A little echo on the vocals reveals that Radiohead reference Horgan notes, and then the song turns decidedly psychedelic, building to Horgan open cooing, joined by the harmonic sighs of a female vocalist, as the drums turn double time, and electric wind of synths and guitar feedback washing over the entire thing. The shoegaze feel dominates much of the songs, and some of the influences are quite obscure. “King” reveals of A Storm In Heaven-era Verve influence, as a subtle howl of electric wind coats the track despite a rollicking, garage rock vibe. The result is a dynamic LP of layered, often atmospheric guitar work and propellant drums. Above it all are Horgans’ airy, crystalline vocals. The lyrics reveal a rather loose story that, he admits, kind of make Morning Night a concept album. “One night I was piecing together the lyrics for a new song when the notion of eternal night worked its way into the verse,” says the Fort Lauderdale-based musician. “Pretty soon I had a vision of a mass exodus of people marching willingly into eternal darkness. Then, in subsequent songs, I started developing a loose narrative that stemmed from that vision. I didn’t really set out to make a concept album so much as I created a world for the songs to grow out of.” The album was rather painstakingly constructed over a period of years. “The songs for the album were written between 2007 and 2010,” Horgan notes. “The recording process did not begin until 2010 and ended in 2012; 2013 has been all mixing and mastering.” Horgan says a variety of things accounted for the length of time he spent on this record, but don’t call him lazy. In fact, the time he spent making Morning Night marked a period of juggling various projects. “I have a hard time sticking to just one project at a time,” he explains. “Sometimes the inspiration goes out of one project and into another, so I’ve let myself get distracted by a number of other projects, and the consequence is that things take a lot longer to finish. I’ve probably recorded about four or more other albums during the recording of Morning Night, so I have a lot of releasing to do. I really hope this is the last time I allow myself to take this long to release something.” Despite that, the album has a true cohesive quality, beyond the obvious lyrical themes. But they also never have a redundant sameness to them, making for a dynamic record that Horgan hope listeners will enjoy as an experience. Therefore, he plans to release the album as a vinyl record, independently. “I’m still a big fan of albums,” he notes, “and I think vinyl is the best way to experience an album. Our future releases will likely be collections of songs, but Morning Night is an album, so we’re releasing it on vinyl.” Vinyl has transcended its fetishistic vintage resurgence as a serious source of quality audio compared to the compressed sonics of mp3s and even CDs. The spacious quality of the album would indeed be well-served with a vinyl version. However, Horgan says, he’s not above considering a cassette release either, which would even further insist the album as a solid experience. “I haven’t looked into the cost of cassettes yet,” he says, “but for Morning Night, we’ll probably give it a try.” As usual, Horgan keeps busy multitasking. A rotating group of musicians helped him record the album and play occasional live shows with him as Sweet Bronco across South Florida. Now he has to establish a touring band, as he hopes to take Sweet Bronco on the road. He remains optimistic about touring plans, though, he admits, “We still have a lot of work to do. But I feel like we’re building good momentum.” ~Hans Morgenstern | The Independent Ethos
Here Lies Bobby Load It was a very sad day on October 19, 2012, when the legendary singer of the South Florida punk band LOAD, Robert H. Johnston passed away. Bobby Load lies in our hearts and in the memories of the South Florida music scene. Who can forget him lying on that dusty old couch/pew at the back of Churchill’s Hideaway? As anyone who knew him can attest, he will never be forgotten. He had a smile, wit, and a certain charm that made one want to hang out with him. His scream, stage presence, and crazy antics were notorious throughout South Florida. On stage, Bobby Load was a maniac. Off stage, he was a kind, humble, artistic savant of sorts. He provided those who knew and loved him with a lifetime of “Bobby stories”.
Bobby Load them well-guarded.
In addition to LOAD, Bobby later fronted the bands Southern Flaw, The Vomits, The Little Bastards, and too many others to mention. He also played at various bars and open mic nights in the area – just Bobby and a guitar – oh, and a beer. Ironically enough, the artwork that he created and sold around town is now revered by many. Those who own his pieces cherish them and keep
Rat Town Records is putting out a LOAD Hits/Tribute type of album. We’ve been working with Rat Bastard. The other day we stumbled across a reel that was unmarked. When we heard it, amongst the very rare unreleased stuff, was “9th Grade Arkansas Plowboy”. I freaked, then Mr. E said, “The look on your face right now tells me we found a gem” We all knew we had found Somethin’ Fuckin’ Killer! On Saturday, November 2, Bobby Load’s home-away-from-home, Churchill’s Hideaway in Miami, will host a celebration of his life and music. Entertainment for the evening will include the 33 1/3s, the Psycho Daisies, Shark Valley Sisters, Southern Flaw, Homos, the Shakers, and a special performance by myself (Fausto Figueredo) and Jeff Tucci of LOAD and Bobby’s brother, Jeff Johnston will take the stage as well. D.J. Skidmark will also be on hand to spin some of Bobby’s favorite tunes. There will also be video projections of old LOAD performances and Churchill’s is setting up a small memorial for Bobby on the bar (Where else?). Bobby’s artwork will also be on display. Everyone is invited to listen to his music, sing along, tell stories and raise a glass to our friend and brother, Bobby “Load” Johnston, the best damn singer this town has ever seen. Saturday, November 2, 2013, 10pm Cover is free. ~ Fausto
