The Thermals

The Thermals Indie-rock has developed into a really rough game these days. The hallways of the buildings built on the might of ‘90s college radio and ‘80s alternative have grown crowded with new comers, revivalists, and old blood still fighting for relevance in an environment where the only constant is change. In a realm so saturated and unpredictable, the fact that The Thermals are closing in 12 years as a band is all the more impressive. However, perhaps more importantly, the anniversary is indicative of a group that truly values its art beyond the promise of major success: Punk rock in its very essence. The Portland based trio released Desperate Ground earlier this year to the acclaim of fans and critics alike. The album shows a band that has honed in upon the very best parts of its sound and sidestepped the cliché of bloated late career albums many groups release after similar tenures in the service of indie-rock. As South Florida prepares to receive The Thermals for the first time in the band’s lengthy career, we caught up with drummer Westin Glass to discuss tour life in Europe, the making of Desperate Ground, and dark vibes with light sonics. PH: How was the band’s Europe tour? Westin: It was really fun, we had a really good time over there. Had some good shows, had some really exceptional shows, too. It was kind of a short tour for us, but, we like it that way, it gets kind of tired. PH: Everyone I know in an American band that has toured Europe always comes back raving about how great the crowds are over there. W: Yeah, I mean, we have some really really great shows over there, and there’s some places where people don’t know our band that well. Germany we always do really well, and this time -- I was surprised -- Italy did really good for us and we’ve kind of struggled there in the past, but it was good on this last tour. PH: What was the best thing you ate over there? W: Oh wow…It’s funny because we always joke that it’s all just bread and cheese the whole time. Like, every day, every country, everywhere you go, it’s just bread and cheese, and it’s good, but it’s kind of like a rough diet. But, we did have a really amazing meal in Amsterdam: There’s an Indonesian restaurant there that is probably my favorite food I’ve ever had in my life -- it’s so good. Just incredibly good. PH: Has the band ever performed in South Florida? W: I’ve been in this band for five years now out of ten or eleven that the band has been around. In the time that I’ve been in the band, the farthest south we’ve been is Orlando. I’m really excited for this tour because it’s a lot of cities I’ve never been to before! PH: On your entrance into the band: Was it awkward entering a band with such a rich history so late in the game, or was the fit very natural? W: Actually, it was awesome. On a personal level and a musical level we all just clicked really well together. I’ve been a fan forever, so it was cool to learn all of these older songs, and you know, I was learning songs from all these records that had been recorded by three different drummers, so each record had a slightly different drumming style, you know? It was kind of a fun challenge to try and learn those older songs and try to play them true to how them were recorded, but also to the unique chemistry that three of us have going on as well. Yeah, it felt really natural since the beginning. PH: When a new member joins a band so well established, it can really change the energy and reactivate a creative spark. Do you feel like your joining helped with the band’s creative longevity outside of just playing the role of a drummer? W: I think so, for sure. I mean, the last two records before I joined were written and recorded entirely by Hutch and Kathy by themselves, so it was cool when I joined because we started writing as a three piece again. It’s hard to say, I joined when they had just finished recording Now We Can See, and I started with them just as that record was about to come out. So, the next two years after that record came out we toured so much, like, so hard. It really feels like the time since I’ve joined has been pretty intense. We’ve worked hard and we’ve toured a lot and recorded a lot and it’s been a blast. I think Hutch and Kathy would never stop, I’d think they’d be doing this no matter what, but I’m the same way -- I love it so much -- so I feel like I brought that and they matched it, or vice versa. PH: On Desperate Ground, the musical content is extremely approachable and catchy, but the lyrical content heads to some pretty dark places. It’s an interesting juxtaposition; was that the natural way those songs developed, or was someone in a specifically dark place when writing the lyrics? Sweet Bronco plays the patio. Tickets are $10 advance, $12 at the door.

Mesoamerica Resiste Nine years in the making, The Beehive Design Collective is launching their most epic illustration to date! MESOAMERICA RESISTE is just about ready to be scattered far and wide! The large poster in this month’s PureHoney only showcases a small portion of the entire piece. Please help them launch the completed print out into the world! Watch the video and check out their Kickstarter campaign at: http://kck.st/17GFrjd ABOUT THE PROJECT Our planet is being transformed by extreme resource extraction, rapid industrialization, and economic globalization. With climate change compounding the high stakes, the exchange of stories and strategies is more important than ever to our collective survival. In this elaborate illustration, stories of social and environmental struggles are depicted through highly detailed drawings of over 500 unique species of plants, animals, and insects that are native to Mesoamerica, highlighting the immense importance of cultural and ecological diversity. The result is a visual tour de force, packed full of compelling and inspirational tales of resistance and resiliency in this era of immense change. Our hope in releasing this graphic into the world is that it will live and evolve as a dynamic tool for organizing and educating about some of the most important issues of our times. ABOUT US The Beehive Design Collective is a wildly motivated, all-volunteer, activistart collective dedicated to “cross-pollinating the grassroots” by creating collaborative, anti-copyright images for use as educational and organizing tools. We work anonymously as word-to-image translators of complex global stories, gathered and shared through first hand conversations with affected communities. Our Kickstarter campaign aims to fund a massive print run of posters and fabric murals which teams of traveling storytellers will tour with, far and wide! Our goal is always to return half of what we print to the regions the stories came from. Please join us in getting the word out! Thanks so much, ~the bees www.BeehiveCollective.org

Quintron & Miss Pussycat

Quintron & Miss Pussycat another year of Art Basel Miami Beach.

There’s something spectacular about inventing instruments for a throwback sound. The man known only as Quintron is such an inventor. The New Orleans-based musician has blessed South Florida with many appearances with his wife, Miss Pussycat, singing and playing maracas alongside him. In a manner of a few days, they will return to Miami, as part of many events celebrating

On stage, Quintron often stations himself behind the grill of a classic car, working headlights included. He plays a hybrid keyboard made of a Hammond organ and a Rhodes synthesizer. Incessant beats are generated electronically and often involve his “Drum Buddy,” which is composed of oscillators, lights and possibly a tin can. His songs have a vintage garage rock quality that swing hard and groovy. A true original, Quintron would make for a fascinating interview. However, the notion of asking this playful, creative genius questions about his method would be futile. In one rare interview, he once told writer Phil Hunt: “I am aware that this interview is a game and I can step outside of this page to see it for what it is. You know, I may never say what I have just said in another interview ever. I can be inconsistent, unreliable, contradictory ... like electricity or plumbing.” There’s even conflicting information as to his real name. It’s either Robert Rolston, according to Wikipedia or Jay Poggi, according to the All Music Guide. But who cares about the person when his music is so raucous and fun. Maybe the sublimation of persona assists the free-wheeling creative feel of the loose, relentless jams Quintron so smoothly weaves. Though he hasn’t released a full-length album since 2011’s rollicking Sucre Du Sauvage, those attending his upcoming show can expect a limited edition 100-minute cassette entitled Changes 999 that covers almost 20 years of career highlights and some new material. Quintron & Miss Pussycat play the Art Basel Kick Off at Churchill’s Pub with Cop City Chill Pillars, White Mystery, Rubber (O) Cement, Dino Felipe on Thursday, December 5. $10, 8pm. ~Hans Morgenstern | The Independent Ethos

Hollow Daze Party If you’ve ever worked in an office, you know that most holiday office parties are about as appealing as the boss’s birthday celebration, with the toxic sheet cake in the break room, and the unenthusiastic, off-key singing, and the self-deprecating jokes about being another year older. Office Christmas parties may be an even worse form of mandatory revelry, because there’s still the off-key singing, only this time there’s a lame gift exchange and alcohol involved. As a result, there will doubtlessly be at least one person doing something embarrassing with a candy cane or a Santa hat that will turn up on Facebook and then come frighteningly to mind every time you see that person in a prim pantsuit near the water cooler. Luckily, this (dare we say) wonderful zine you’re holding in your hand doesn’t have an office, just the home computer of founder/publisher Steev Rullman. For us here at PureHoney, an by jennifurr witchfingurrss “office party” is just an excuse to get a few great bands together on an awesome stage, along with the publication’s top writers, artists, advertisers, distributors and sponsors. Thus, we’re treating you to the third annual PureHoney Hollow-Daze Office Party on Dec. 13 at Propaganda, a free opportunity to mingle with the team that makes this zine happen and possibly take home some comp party favours. Mostly however, it’s a chance to showcase a few of our favorite local acts under the same roof. The lineup features throwback shoegazers Sweet Bronco, supporting its wonderful soon-to-be-released album “Morning Night,” which sounds like a forgotten Creation Records release from 1984; Symbols, a skittish, atmospheric witch-house/trap outfit; Whorish Boorish, Miamian Rebecca Lima’s vintage garage-psych project; and Boxwood, Jose Ferrer’s ridiculously lush, experimental, shoegazey yet hooky one-man-looping sound vehicle. PureHoney has worked hard to support these bands, so we thought a nice holiday gift exchange might be to ask them to share their feelings about PH. According to Lima, PureHoney is “a significant bastion of resources with pure passion for local and not-so-local artistry, whatever medium it may be. They know… cool.” Chris Horgan, of Sweet Bronco, added, “PureHoney is a huge lover of bands, and it shows. No one (arguably-ed) has displayed more persistence in the mission of sharing great music with the community for such a long period of time.” Aww… don’t you want to just snuggle up with some spiked eggnog and kickass indie rock now? It all goes down Dec. 13 at Propaganda, 6 South J Street, Lake Worth, starting at 9pm For information, call 561-547-7273. ~John Thomason

Wynwood Map Wynwood Map is a new online initiative designed to catalog and organize the ever changing and evolving street art of Miami’s trendy Wynwood district. Imagine you’re at the largest outdoor museum in the world. You pick up a free guide telling you about every single piece of art painted on the walls: who the artist is, when the piece was created, and where it’s located in the museum— that’s basically what Wynwood Map accomplishes. It’s a website (not an app) but the easy-to-navigate platform was specifically designed for Smart-phones. Basically, if you’re in the neighborhood, often criticized for a lack of organization, you now have access to information. You can walk around with your own personal docent in your pocket. It’s a cool project.

Robert William Wynwood Map was curated and created by Robert William, a local Miamian who loves street art and has been chronicling the neighborhood for years. “We owed it to the artists to create this. Not only to the artists, but to the people in this city who don’t know what we have on our walls. The world is paying attention to Wynwood, so why not show them 365 days out of the year?” There is no other neighborhood quite like Wynwood. Almost all of the world’s street artists have work somewhere in the vicinity including: Shepherd Fairey, Space Invader, Ron English, Aiko, Nunca. The list is very long and includes just about every street artist, except for Banksy.

It cannot be confirmed definitively if the elusive English artist has work in Wynwood. “I can’t say yes for sure, but there is a Banksy boombox/ NY cap stenciled rat at the Wynwood Kitchen and Bar outside in the back patio,” explains Mr. William. With the world getting ready to parachute into the streets of Miami for Art Basel and all of the satellite Fairs—there’s two things we know for sure: the landscape of the neighborhood will definitely change with new artwork plastered to its walls, and Wynwood Map will chronicle it. “It really says something when hundreds of artists from all over the world arrive just to leave us a piece of what’s in their minds,” explains Mr. William. “They make this place a must-see go-to destination, every single year. Our goal is to create the world’s largest street art database. There is no better place to start then Wynwood. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that it’s also in our hometown.” For more information about Wynwood Map check: www.wynwoodmap.com ~J.J. Colagrande

Dan Hosker Continuum On Saturday May 19, 2012, our friend Dan Hosker - local musician beloved by so many in the South Florida original music scene - was in a tragic accident driving home from a gig. At Broward General Hospital his body fought hard for three months, but his injuries were too great and on Saturday August 11, 2012 he passed away. A fixture of the local music scene for over 20 years, Dan played with the Holy Terrors, Harry Pussy, The Bikes, Boise Bob & His Backyard Band, Mr Entertainment & the Pookiesmackers, Aquafly, The Girls Named Lourdes, Underskor… and dozens more. As devastating a loss as this was to his friends and family, we all vowed to keep the memory of this very special person alive. Towards that end, his sister Chris started a music scholarship in Dan’s name at their high school in Danvers, MA. In December last year around Dan’s birthday we held the first show for this cause, and the Dan Hosker Music Continuum was born. Each year, two deserving students with a passion for music will receive a scholarship of $500 Dan Hosker to further their musical pursuits. The first two prizes were awarded this past June, and this will be the second school year that the Continuum scholarship will be awarded to two deserving students at Dan’s alma mater, Bishop Fenwick. The second annual Dan Hosker Music Continuum is scheduled for Saturday & Sunday, Dec. 7 & 8. Once again it will be held at Churchill’s in Miami (Dan’s musical home-away-from-home for many years), and this year’s Continuum is going to be a little different: This year, participating musicians and bands will be asked to collaborate with OTHER musicians/bands they might not normally play with in a kind of musical mash-up that should certainly make things very interesting and will definitely be in the spirit of Dan, who was always looking to expand his musical horizons. More info on the line-up for this year’s show and info on donating to the Continuum can be found online at www.facebook.com/ DanHoskerMusicContinuum We hope you can make it out to help us honor and remember the life of someone who made a difference in the lives of so many of us – and can now continue to make a difference in the lives of future musicians. ~Rob Elba

Kings Head Records In under employed America, sometimes instead of getting a job you have to make one. This is what happened in the beginning of 2013 when two brothers, Daniel and Ben Washburn, and their friend Will Garcia started King’s Head Records. They discovered an old modeling agency to use as an office, built a studio, and signed their first artist- Ben Wash. Their goal was to put out hard hitting electronic music, position their roster alongside already established artists and thrust KH directly into an exploding electronic music scene. Less than a year later, things are buzzing at that old modeling agency. KH has put out three EPs and a single from their now three artists. A fashion designer runs operations and an Argentine journalist runs the one woman press department. They even have an office manager. During this time they have learned how to be a record label, amassing music, events, images and ideas that make up a 21st century brand.

Ben Wash Currently they are on the eve of their biggest project yet, Ben Wash’s debut full-length album “Snob Rock”. They believe it genuinely has the makings of what could be one of the strongest debuts by an electronic artist ever. It has a wide array of intense electro, dark and beautiful vocal tracks, and a grand sweep that will make it a real listening experience. As it goes with EDM, there will of course be remixes by established crowd pleasers.

King’s Head is all about new experiences. Their recently launched, highly interactive website draws visitors into the future. In “Visions” listeners can play games, manipulate shapes and be dazzled by visual tricks while listening to the artist’s songs. In a time when having someone sit through a three minute music video is a real challenge, “Visions” is an interactive experience that is new and completely engrossing. King’s Head has also created a “Castle” series of events in Miami. Once each month, at The Garret in Grand Central, they showcase both label and local artists as DJ’s for what might be the hippest party in Miami for electronic music. Each party is color themed with a mind bending projection system. These events, like everything else they do, showcase the touchstones of King’s Head: dark-convulsive dance music, intriguing visuals, all delivered with a wink. ~Lauren Wolfe
