ROOFLESS, WORTHY SPECTACLES

Although South Florida has a reputation for electronic and booty bass music, we know there is more to our sunny shores than crunk, Rick Ross and boom-tiss. Just scratch the surface beyond that rap and dance façade and you will find material that encompasses tons of different genres. The next few issues of PureHoney will spotlight local labels that inspire us and arouse the local scene’s senses. This month we focus on Roofless Records. More cultural curators than a run-of-the-mill label, Roofless Records not only releases vinyl and cassette tapes, books and promotes shows, but also curates what label founder Matt Preira calls “worthy spectacles.” Currently Roofless is working on its ninth installment of its Cinema Sounds series-- a film and live music saturnalia,-that’s set to take place on November 23 at Wynwood’s O Cinema. Preira began the label in 2007 by releasing his first record, a Fas’ners/ The Würst “Live at the Sarasota Succulent Society” split cassette. As a New College of Florida student, Preira, took to archiving Sarasota and Tampa’s experimental music scene (working with such as Skeleton Warrior, Tyger Beat and My Left Uterus.) In 2009, Preira and fellow NCF colleague, Dana Bassett brought their operation to Miami. Since then the duo have orchestrated loads of imaginative events and have shown an eclectic palate to their catalog- releasing primo Floridian death metal act’s Slashpine’s 7-inch and The President’s kooky genre-hopping LeBron Deluxe CD. As if all this was not enough artistic moxie, Roofless is also in the printing business. No shit. The label is planning to release its second book, a collection of works by former Miami and now Chicago-based artist Nina Hartmann. ~Alex Rendon w w w . r o o f l e s s r e x . t u m b l r . c o m

WOOD MEMORIAL HOLIDAY BOOK DRIVE The 15th annual Wood Memorial Holiday Book Drive was started by Christina Wood, a local writer, in 1997 after the death of her parents, Peter and Helen Wood. Christina’s parents instilled in her a strong love for reading and her enthusiasm compels her to share this passion with at-risk children. New childrens books (ages 6 months-10 years) are collected every season and distributed by the Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County.

New books can be dropped at: O’Shea’s Irish Pub, Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge LLP, Dreyfoos School of the Arts, the Delray Beach Public Library, Centre for the Arts at Mizner Park, LRP Publications, Inc. and the South Florida Water Management District. If you are able to drop a book at the O’Shea’s drive on Thursday, December 8th, you will be greeted with live Irish music, a complementary traditional festive buffet (roast turkey, ham and all the trimmings) and an open bar from 7-8pm. They just ask that you to bring at least one new childrens book. For more information and a complete list of drop locations contact the Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County. w w w . l i t e r a c y p b c . o r g

KWAK: MEDIA KILLS/GREED KILLS Kris grew up in Jonestown, PA where she had been painting for most of her life. Before moving to south Florida, she had several exhibitions and sold a good chunk of her debut collection. Since moving to Delray Beach, she has had several showings throughout the state. Her paintings were featured in the sixth season of “Collage Hill”, BET’s hit reality show. The Delray Times and the Sun Sentinel have given her work outstanding reviews. Her latest collection was shown at The Schacknow Museum of Fine Art in Plantation, as well as the Luis Hernandez Art Shop & Salon & Ursula’s Fine Art at West Best. Kris constantly lends support by painting live at local charity events which allows the patrons to witness her process. She has also ventured into the elusive world of street art where she unveiled her latest project “Media Kills/Greed Kills”. MKGK’s purpose is to spread awareness about the reality of greed in mainstream media. The project has quickly gone global and you can find her designs as far away as Germany, France and Amsterdam. For more information about the project or any of Kris’ artwork, check out her website at www.theKwak.com or follow her blog at www.theKwak.me

PERSONAL ARCHETYPE by Daniel Pujol God isn’t dead, He has just stopped aging, and got really into mime.

He does the kooky kabuki, holding incredibly taut poses, where you can see Him shiver, trying to control his breathing in order to appear statuesque, static, and/or dead. He’s been doing the same play forwards and then backwards since D-Day called, “Ubermensch, Spidermensch, Batmensch,” but His silent scream is usually drowned out by sports-talk techno music, while shaman re-kill the suspicious dead with evanescent Silver Bullet by video game, humping the air like dogs, shredding their vocal cords, blood capsules exploding into sweat, veins ripping from their skull, to paint aloud their tombstone in frantic red, ”God isn’t dead, he’s just a flying robot that can see my heat but not my face.”

Living Art Meta Programs, Inc. (LAMP) is a Florida Non-Profit organization providing educational programs integrating art, science, and humanities promoting sustainability through community-based outreach programs. The aims of the LAMP, Inc. are to work for enhancement of the quality of our environment and to raise public awareness of the relationships between environmental and health science. MD Fairchild a longtime gardener, plant advocate, deep ecologist has been enjoying nature, growing gardens and exploring the world of healing plants for over thirty years. His Urban Foraging Workshop teaches about valuable / neglected plant species that can be used as food and or medicines found growing locally. We take walking tours that involve plant identification. A portion of the proceeds go to funding local non-profits involved in community outreach. Discover the ‘Green’ in your own backyard! The workshop will meet on Saturday, December 3rd at Harold’s Coffee in Northwood beginning at 1pm. Call 561.429.9183 to reserve your space. Visit L.A.M.P. online at lampinfo.org to learn more.
