The Brazilian Girls

Nothing beats live dance music, and The Brazilian Girls -- actually three guys and a front lady from Rome who met in New York City – can put on a hell of a groovy live show. Though they have not released a full-length album since their brilliant 2008 album New York, people are still drawn to their tours, which started again in 2012 after singer Sabina Sciubba took maternity leave for a few years.
The band, which also includes Didi Gutman on keyboards and computers, Jesse Murphy on bass, and Aaron Johnston on drums, have been performing new songs since reuniting, teasing new and exceptional live material. This year was to see the release of a new EP, but the band recently announced via Facebook they would wait to release new music until they had enough for a full-length album, which is now slated for a 2016 release. No matter, they are coming to Miami, and are still worthy of headlining a show. They hop through as many dance genres as Sciubba sings languages (French, English, Spanish, Italian, German and even old Latin). Their songs have elements of reggae, electronica, jazz and bossa nova, but it never feels like a hodgepodge. Below the hybrid genre stylings are rhythms that pulse along to make their music easy to listen and flow with. They burst on the scene in 2003 with a self-released EP called “It’s Huge,” whose songs included highlights like the chill out favorite “Lazy Lover” and the singalong soca swing of “Pussy.” All the songs off the EP wound up on the band’s debut self-titled album, released on Verve Records in 2005. Fast forward through two more albums, and the band’s songs have grown more sophisticated and quite possibly even more infectious. If the musical stylings aren’t enough to capture your attention, Sciubba owns the role of front woman, often donning theatrical costumes on stage made by notable designers, including the avant-garde fashion group threeASFOUR. The Brazilian Girls are definitely one of those groups who deserve their longevity as a live act. The Brazilian Girls with MillionYoung, Bluejay, Grey 8s and The Hongs. Nov. 6, 5pm. – 10pm. The Growlers The Growlers make music that mirrors some aspects of life in South Florida brilliantly well. Sure, the band lives and bleeds California-cool, but the disparity between the two worlds is really not so far off that a parallel cannot be made. As anyone that is both steeped in the lore of the Growlers’ music and has passed through the seedier parts of South Florida’s beach communities can undoubtedly tell you, the band’s songs tell many of the same stories which play out The Growlers | Credit: Pamela Littky along bars and coastal sprawl of South Florida, simply through the lens of a Californian experience. The dusty, hazy, drug-addled sonic aesthetic that permeates the Growlers’ self-described “beach-goth” sound also feels perfectly suited to the humidity and heat of the region, which has lent a surely backdrop to similar stories of depression and debauchery as those found in the Growlers’ tunes. The band represents something unique amid the ever-proliferating world of indie-rock tropes, purveying a sound that is retro without leaning too heavily on any one historically relevant genre, the Growler’s music is somehow vague in origin without being bland or basic. Replete with spooky, droning organ, reverb-soaked guitars, a touch of traditional latino influence not unlike that which finds its way into much of South Florida’s music through osmosis, and a crooned delivery via the velvet-smooth voice of frontman Brooks Neilsen, no one really sounds like the Growlers. The band’s music is a celebration of relatable weirdness and darkness that is never forced nor contrived, and seems permanently stuck in a some glorious forgotten tiki bar that exists within an unmade John Waters’ film, or a lost Bukowski novel, or maybe a Tom Waits B-side. The ideal soundtrack to night driving through the scenes that happen within the neon-festooned motel jungle that lines A1A and shadowboxes Hollywood Beach, or the drug-addled stretches of forgotten beach the punctuates the more high-falutin’ areas of coastline between Miami to Jupiter. The band’s most recent release, Chinese Fountain, delivers the goods promised by the band’s critically-lauded past efforts, and elaborates on the Growlers’ sound without abandoning any of its charms. The group will be appearing at Fort Lauderdale’s Culture Room on Tuesday, November 3rd for a night of sweaty, psychedelic-infused beach-goth revelry with Broncho and Heavy Drag. 7:30pm, $15. Things are absolutely certain to get weird. ~ Von Bader
The English Beat The English Beat; aka, the Beat, in England; aka, the British Beat, in Australia; has been making their brand of 2-tone ska for nearly 40 years. Originally, they were part of the second generation ska revivalist bands that sprung up out of the punk rock community in England. However, unlike some of their contemporaries, they relied less on the aggression of punk rock and embraced the poppy groove of their rock steady predecessors. Their first single was a cover of the Smokey Robinson and the Miracles tune, “Tears of a Clown.” A song about stifling anger and pain behind an empty smile; a fitting track for an upbeat band immersed in the dystopian scene of late 70’s British The English Beat - Dave Wakeling punk rock scene. They followed it up Credit: Bryan Kremkau with, “Hands off…She’s Mine” and “Mirror in the Bathroom.” All of which appeared on the Beat’s first album, “I Just Can’t Stop It.” They continued putting out an album a year until 1983 when the Beat decided to call it quits and try new things. Dave Wakeling and Ranking Roger, the front men of the English Beat went on to form General Public, with ex-members of the Clash, Dexy’s Midnight Runners and the Specials. While other members went on to form Fine Young Cannibals with vocalist Roland Gift. General Public had a top 40 hit in America with, “Tenderness.” The decidedly more New Wave direction the band was moving in seemed to perfectly meld with their 2-tone roots and they followed it up with, “I’ll Take You There” another soul classic re-interpreted for modern times. As the decade wore on the members of the English Beat continued collaborating with their stable of super talented musician friends of excellent pedigree, but the shadow of the English Beat was always there.

There have been several attempts to re-unite the original line-up, but at this point the group is splintered into three different factions: The English Beat, featuring Dave Wakeling on vocals; the Beat, featuring Ranking Roger on vocals and, The Beat (UK)/English Beat which features original players from the band’s original era. The English Beat, tours through the states while the other Beats stick to mostly European gigs. It’s a strange and convoluted story with an all star cast of musical characters; however, any story worth hearing is going to have some rough edges. Good thing the English Beat brings some sweet sounds to smooth out the details. The English Beat, play the Culture Room in Fort Lauderdale on November 13. Doors are at 8pm, $20. ~ Tim Moffatt

HopeFest 2015 More than just a full day of music, Hopefest is the life-changing venture of a Jupiter couple, Matt and Melissa Hudson, launched in memory of their infant son, Harrison, who was born with unsurvivable physical defects.
Dumpstaphunk | Credit: Jim Mimma
Harrison died in 2011, at four months, and today he is remembered through an annual benefit concert at Abacoa Amphitheater in Jupiter that raises funds for selected families facing similar challenges — special-needs children requiring major care.
With a national headliner, the groove-minting New Orleans jam band Dumpstaphunk, and a deep roster of area performers, Hopefest 2015 is also a testament to the Hudsons’ love of music. Matt Hudson told the Palm Beach Post in 2014 that once the family decided to start a foundation, “We weren’t going to do golf tournaments. We needed live concerts.” The homegrown lineup ranges across rock, roots, funk, alternative, acoustic and electric. There’s the ghostly, voice-and guitar soundscapes of alt-troubadour John Ralston; earthy, unplugged jams from Sosos; and a straight-up James Brown tribute by Fusik. Also mobilizing for Hopefest 2015 are South Florida acts Boxelder, Luna Rex, Chaucer, Mike Mineo and Uproot Hootenanny. Not all of Hopefest’s young beneficiaries are fated to lives as brief as Harrison’s. But their needs do not automatically recede as they progress through childhood. Take Gabriel Castle, a four-year-old born with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC), a disabling condition in which stiff, underdeveloped joints restrict both motion and muscle development. Gabriel’s mother, Meghan Castle, tells Matt Hudson in a podcast that multiple surgeries in her son’s early life have given way to regular physical, occupational and speech therapy — Gabriel is also developmentally disabled. For all the demands his care places on him, Gabriel remains a happy child whose favorite TV show is “Thomas the Train,” says his mom. In a video at HopeFestFL.org, Matt Hudson says the event is also about getting families like the Castles out of the house and letting music be their therapy for a day. There’s also a Kids Zone, food vendors and, for the grownups, service of craft beers, wines and specialty drinks. Hopefest 2015 runs noon to 10pm, Saturday, Nov. 21, rain or shine, at Abacoa Amphitheater, 1267 Main Street, Jupiter. Advance tickets are $20 at Eventbrite. com, Kids 12 and under are admitted free. ~ Sean Piccoli
Public Image Ltd There are moments when the new album by Public Image Ltd, What The World Needs Now … sounds like frontman John Lydon leaning on his old punk infamy and letting his résumé do the performing. Between the cute irony of the album’s title, with its amputated reference to Hal David, and the cheeky opener, “Double Trouble,” which skewers domestic drudgery, the erstwhile Johnny Rotten of Sex Pistols fame is effectively mugging for the camera, as if to say, “I’m baa-aack.”
the same woman since 1978.)
But the knowingness also works in Lydon’s favor. It’s funny, and he knows it, that this old slayer of queens and prime ministers can now be heard complaining — or at least mimicking complaints — about household maintenance. (He’s been married to
Staying angry is tough work, career-wise, in the arts, especially if the field keeps rewarding you for sticking around, but this Brit-punk godfather is still nursing enough spleen to sound off believably. The fury that is an expression of Lydon’s disappointed humanism continues to serve him pretty well as he nears 40 years (spitting) in the public eye. Most of that stretch, he has spent in a conflicted relationship with his Pistols legacy and his early Rotten persona, all while he invested himself a great deal more in his prolific and varied if unavoidably less celebrated output as John Lydon. Amazingly, in hindsight, it was in 1978 that Public Image: First Issue arrived, eleven months after the Pistols fell apart. What the World Needs Now … PiL’s tenth studio release. This latest is not on a par with 1986’s artful punk opus, Album, but is sharp and engaging enough overall to demand notice as Lydon and his terrific band grapple with modernity and make an appealing racket. Where the one-album Pistols were practically built to burn and leave scorched earth, PiL has traveled the technological, informational age with its caustic bandleader holding up everything to questioning or mockery. His Rottenness endures, and in PiL his vocal arsenal of snarls, barks and warbles inhabits deep grooves and pooling synthesizer chords as well as bed-of-nails punk-band noise. Public Image Ltd plays 8pm Thursday Nov. 5 at Culture Room, 3045 N. Federal Hwy., Fort Lauderdale. 954-564-1074 cultureroom.net. Tickets are $25 ~ Sean Piccoli
NEWT Miami NEWT Transforms the Magic City Skyline.
light, color, and sound.
Synesthetes experience a neurological phenomena in which stimulation of one sense triggers the simultaneous experience of another. Chromesthesia is a kind of synesthesia where one experiences sounds as colors or colors as sounds. If you’re in Miami during the first week of November, you may be able to know what this feels like when NEWT takes over the Intercontinental Miami building with a public art project integrating
From several vantage points, people will be able to watch an installation of colors and lights on a 19-story digital canvas while listening to synchronized music on any mobile device - smartphone, iPad, or even an iWatch. NEWT co-founder Dejha Carrington says “The InterContinental hotel’s digital exterior presented itself as an opportunity: a vertical canvas to do something that’s artistically rigorous and accessible as public art. “ The conversation with the InterContinental began about a year ago, but the idea for a site-specific sensorial activation had been brewing for much longer. In fact, it may have started somewhere around 1666 when Isaac Newton refracted a beam of white light through a prism to reveal a seven color spectrum that he later correlated with the seven notes on a musical scale. Carrington credits composer and NEWT co-founder Kelly Nunes with developing the creative aspect of the project. Spring boarding from Newton’s theories on color and sound, Nunes worked closely with animator and art director Adam Sajkowski to bring together their vision for an interactive art and music installation. “Some animations were created to be composed, and some compositions were written to be animated,” Nunes says. “We wanted synchronized content, which feels like it is neither leading nor following, but emerging harmoniously.” Festivities begin with a free reception and panel discussion on November 3 at MDC Museum of Art +Design at Freedom Tower and continue with a series of community engagement events like NEWT’s Yoga in El Barrio at Bayfront Park. The installation debuts at sundown on November 10. The events are free and open to the public. Carrington hopes that since there are so many vantage points of the InterContinental Miami “that maybe the residents with the best views of the hotel will invite a few friends over, play the music on their wireless speakers, and vibe out.” More information can be found at ProjectNewt.com ~ Jessica Chesler
CANVAS West Palm Beach CANVAS Makes Art Matter in West Palm Beach Miami is arguably the center of the South Florida art world-- think Art Basel and Wynwood. Now try to think of another place south of St. Lucie evocative of visual creativity and artsy vibes.
CANVAS - Mural by Hula
north to West Palm Beach.
Gallery owner Nicole Henry has long recognized the social and economic benefits of a thriving arts community. With the opening of CANVAS Outdoor Museum Show, she hopes to extend those benefits
Henry has brought together a coalition of public and private organizations and a talented army of 20 artists to transform the downtown area. Henry says, “We’re very passionate about infusing art into the community.” When CANVAS opens, West Palm Beach will be infused with international wellknowns like the German street art duo Herakut who specializes in murals that combine words along with imagery. Then there is London based artist D’Face who has collaborated with H.R.H. Queen Elizabeth II and painted a portrait to commemorate the instatement of Pope Benedict XVI. Hawaii born, New York based Sean Yoro (aka Hula) has already been seen paddling around Royal Park Bridge on a surfboard preparing to paint another mesmerizing image of a woman appearing submerged in or about to emerge from the water. Local artists will also participate during a special event where they will each claim a garage door in a section of the city’s Northwood neighborhood, and some members of the community will have an opportunity to fill in part of a mural. Henry believes the city of West Palm Beach has yet to realize its potential to become an arts and cultural hub. She says, “Our CANVAS team is very excited to advance that destiny and see the eye-opening effects of our installations.” At the moment, Miami still gets most of the attention, and there is almost no art event more recognizable than Art Basel. However, CANVAS has a real chance of establishing itself as a major player with an impressive roster of artists and a supportive community. CANVAS will debut November 8 and continue through November 22. The 14-day event will feature a series of free events open to the public as well as VIP exhibits and parties with tickets ranging from $75 for the closing brunch to $200 for the OnBoard CANVAS Yacht Party. An app will also be available that allows voting for your favorite works. You can learn more about the artists and purchase tickets at CanvasWPB.org ~ Jessica Chesler
Aces High Music Fest Fall brings with it cooler weather, the beginning of the holiday season and an over abundance of pumpkin flavored delicacies. Every year during Thanksgiving weekend the Aces High Music Festival descends on Respectable Street to shine a spotlight on some of the brightest spots in South Florida’s musical landscape. This year finds the festival in a particularly celebratory state of mind for many different reasons; most importantly it’s the 10 year anniversary of the opening of the original Aces High Tattoo shop in West Palm. The line-up consists of many bands that at some point or another have played the shop’s parties over the years; making this a sort of homecoming gathering for some. This being a generally close knight group of artists and musicians; the Fest also brings with it other reasons to celebrate. The Darling Sweets, Lake Worth’s purveyors of roots-y, Americana, have been on a bit of a sabbatical for the majority of this year due to some of the members burgeoning family life; the Fest is a perfect chance to welcome them back to the fold. Everymen, a brood of fire breathing folk/punk madmen, are celebrating an impending month long tour of Europe in the coming new year. The Aces High fest is a celebration and a send off for the motley group of gypsy punks. Everymen headlines the inside stage with Spred the Dub, the Darling Sweets, Lavola and Bonnie Riot. West Palms resident hardcore stalwarts, Old Habits are headlining the outside stage and will be sure to get the crowds blood pumping. Old Habits is going to be taking things pretty slow after this show; with only a few dates scheduled for the foreseeable future; presumably so that the band, some of the hardest working people in the scene, can focus on their many other projects. John Wylie, the group’s guitar player, owns Aces High and Eulogy Records as well as being the guy in charge of putting together the festival. The outside stage will also feature: Sweet Nothings, Sunnyvale and Right Through. The Aces High Festival is an eclectic affair with all the right elements to appeal to a fairly broad audience of music goers and an opportunity to catch some of South Florida’s best. Come check them out so you can say you saw them way back when. The Aces High Festival takes place Saturday, November 28 at Respectable Street; doors at 8pm; $10 admission; 18+. ~ Tim Moffatt
