Drag the River at Lion & Eagle
Drag the River
Drag The River is Jon Snodgrass and Chad Price. Their songs and stories conjure up a great mix of Uncle Tupelo, Mats, and Waylon, and yet they’re unique to these two gifted voices. I’ve had the pleasure of being on the road for a couple of tours with DTR when I was in The Enablers, and it’s always good to talk with them. Jon made some time for a chat while playing Mr. Mom, and some of it went like this...
Dan: Have you noticed new faces at your shows after opening up for Social Distortion? Jon: Maybe. I think you need to do that kind of thing several times, you know, which we’ve never done before. I think it was definitely helpful. Dan: Was it enjoyable for you? Jon: Yeah. Oh yeah. I liked it. I didn’t know if I would or not, but I did. We’re used to playing our own show and doing whatever we want to do, playing for a long time. It was great letting someone else have the pressure of bringing all the people to the show. Just show up and play. It was kind of nice just being told what to do and what time to be there. That’s great. I can do that! Dan: Is there another tour like that you’d like to be on? Jon: Well, sure. Anyone that I respect. We just played with X last week. I had met them before as a fan and stuff. They were so kind and they were real genuine about the whole thing. They said some good stuff and I know that they meant it. It was cool. I would absolutely love to do that type of thing with them because they were great. Plus, they’re one of my all-time favorite bands. Dan: Is there anything you would want people to know about DTR? Jon: I’m proud of our band. I think we’re good. You have to have a little bit of cockiness to do what you do, to think you’re good enough to be able to go out and do these things, but at the same time be pretty humble. I realize that we’re just another band out there. We’re better than most, but we’re not the best. ZHU at The Fillmore For seeking to ply his trade in one of the most “cult of personality” genres in dance music, producer, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist Steven Zhu might be the hardest working electronic musician trying to stay out of the limelight. Whether this is a ploy to propel him further into the mainstream or not, remains to be seen. ZHU, who goes with the stylized all caps of his last name, is certainly keeping up appearances. With a Grammy nomination for his 2014 future house hit “Faded,” creating more media interest, ZHU has managed to remain elusive and short, looking to keep the focus on his work and not himself. And while this does indeed stink of a ploy in the reverse-psychology, self-aggrandizing variety, there are a few facts pointing to the veracity of what could very well be an agoraphobic fear of fame. A 2011 graduate of the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music, Zhu leaves behind ZHU an academic record pointed for his outcast status in the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity and for shying away from EDM. Hiding his identity didn’t hurt him none when he released “Moves Like Ms. Jackson” in early 2014, to high praise from the blogosphere. He’s been busy at work, collaborating with Skrillex and THEY, setting himself release goals like the “52 to ZHU” project, and releasing his first proper album on Columbia Records, last year’s Genesis Series. There might be something prophetic there too, with the Judeo-Christian tradition seeing “genesis” as the beginning. ZHU might be onto something, certainly not the beginning of something new, but something familiar done better. This is a refreshing entry into the world of button pushers and knob twisters who’ve come to rely more on who they are to sell tickets than what they’ve produced. ZHU could, with time, become one of those types of dance music personalities, though it is unlikely that it would happen any time soon. For now, ZHU remains deeply committed to his craft, and as such, continues to play the hermit when the media comes a ’calling. For an artist who wants to be judged by his work, he’s got the bravura set for a favorable verdict. ZHU’s Neon City Tour with special guest Gallant closes out in Miami at 9pm on Saturday, May 21 at the Fillmore Miami Beach at Jackie Gleason Theater, 1700 Washington Ave, Miami Beach. Tickets cost $32-$45 plus fees. Call 305.673.7300 or visit fillmoremb.com. ~ Abel Folgar

BrewHouse Gallery Turns 2 “The Brewhouse Gallery has always been an art gallery first and that is truly the core of our model,” explains AJ Brockman. “Last year we were able to expand and along with that came a lot more cold-storage in which we were able to increase our craft beer offerings, bottle selection, craft sodas, vintage arcade games, community-style picnic seating and Diner Dogs Inc., an in-house food vendor.” Brockman, an artist and co-owner of the Brewhouse Gallery and The Kelsey Theater had a vision for reinventing the “art gallery” experience. The Brewhouse Gallery in Lake Park is now closing on its second year and its rapid growth has been due to the diligence of its staff, the support of the community, and the clientele – who have welcomed the quirky fusion of art, music, coffee, and beer. With a large number of craft beers on tap and a continuous showing of artists on their walls, Brockman prides the arrangement as more beneficial than a traditional art gallery setting with zero-commission on artwork sales and an estimated ten times more foot traffic which leads to sales. The craft approach is in full effect too. As he puts it, “performing artists have a true listening room where patrons come to hear the music not just have it as background noise. Our audience is very engaged and we pride ourselves on limited distractions such as loud TVs and poor sound quality.” Such high placement of focus on the art and artists is also evident in their taps. Boasting one of the larger rosters of craft brews, their selections reflect local love with international appreciation. Since last year’s one-year anniversary party – which took the Brewhouse by surprise and grew into a huge block party – the crew has, since this past October, assumed full proprietorship of the plaza in which they are situated. “With that came the opportunity to resurrect the rundown movie theater into what is now The Kelsey Theater,” he says. “The potential of the venue is huge and we are hoping that this is the ‘fuel’ to the fire we have already started to create in revitalizing Lake Park as a whole. We will be working hand-in-hand with programming, after parties, and special events to truly create a downtown vibe and further the success of our art district.” The Kelsey Theater, a nod to Lake Park’s former existence as Kelsey City, can be a game-changer for Palm Beach and a draw for touring acts as well as locals looking to expand their tri-county fan base. But Brockman retains the spirit and attitude of the Brewhouse flowing into this venue, “not only are we a music venue but we are also a true performing arts hub. We are capable of hosting anything from indie film showings, ballet, stage shows, comedians, you name it.” He goes on to describe the infrastructure of the Kelsey as suitable for event rentals as well like expos, weddings, conventions, and corporate retreats among others – all in hopes of reinforcing the burgeoning arts community while bolstering the tourism trade by creating a destination. Work has begun on creating the programming that will make it such a compelling enterprise that will honor the history of the establishment while giving it an updated and refined contemporary vibe. A big plus will undoubtedly be the symbiotic relationship between the two ventures. “[This] allows for some really great synergy. Instead of two businesses competing with each other, we are focusing on a flow of foot traffic between the two. Brewhouse will be the official after party for pretty much every event at Kelsey and always have complementary programming that does not compete with the events scheduled.” For the two-year anniversary, they’re looking to go bigger and better. A full day of music is planned between the two venues with 20 bands, rare beer tappings every hour, live painting, vintage goods and the tandem grand openings of few more businesses in the plaza like a tattoo parlor, hair salon, and a dance studio among others. For a local spot that grew out of “brewing,” stemming more from ideology than from beer and/or coffee, the Brewhouse Gallery and now the Kelsey Theater have gotten big fast. Brockman expects more challenges in the future, “good problems to have” as he puts it, like more dedicated parking, additional housing in the immediate area, etc… Promising what is pretty much “the official birth of the Lake Park Art District. One giant block party to commemorate our local art scene with music, fine art, food and craft beer,” he adds a quote from a Spielberg classic: “We are going to need a bigger boat.” May 14 from 12pm til 12am at The Brewhouse Gallery and The Kelsey Theater in Lake Park! Collie Buddz Block Party Lake Worth is a haven for local live music, and if there is a central locus or ground zero incubator for start-up and established Florida bands, it’s Propaganda. It is one of the few venues in South Florida that, because of its size and set-up, still allows for an intimate experience with music and the musicians. On May 6, they will be taking over J Street with a block party hosted by Collie Buddz. You may be familiar with Buddz if you’re a follower of pop reggae artists like Shaggy, or remixes of Kid Cudi singles. No stranger to the festival circuit, Collie Buddz he has made the rounds at Lollapalooza, Outside Lands, Summer Jam, Reggae on the Rocks, California Roots Festival, Seattle City Arts Festival, and the Marley family’s 9 Mile Music Festival. New Orleans born, Bermuda bred Buddz will be rocking Lake Worth’s favorite live music venue along with West Palm Beach’s Making Faces, Florida’s tropical reggae, Karlos Marz Band, and California beach rock reggae band, Wheeland Brothers. Straight outta Boynton Beach, LFTD LVLS will bring it’s reggae rock rap fusion to the inside stage, with Jupiter’s self-described island indie band, The Helmsmen, and Weird at First, who held their debut show at Propaganda last December. South Florida is no stranger to reggae-ska-beach-rock-rap, and it’s not a bad way to bring in the early summer we enjoy here, (in fact, it’s incredibly awesome.) While the rest of the country is still in sweaters, you can show up as you are, in flip-flops and summer dresses, because everything is going to be alright at the J Street Block Party. Join the jam on Friday, May 6 at Propaganda at 6 South J Street in Lake Worth. The event begins at 6pm and goes on, rain or shine. The inside stage at Propaganda is up for those 18 and up. The outside stage is open to partiers of all ages. Advance tickets available at www.ticketmaster.com for $20 (or you can avoid those services fees & buy the tickets at Propaganda.) ~ Jessica Chesler
!!! aka Chk Chk Chk !!!, (pronounced chk, chk, chk,) have been making infectiously dancey, indie pop since the late 90’s. They are an amalgamation of several fairly eclectic bands originating from Sacramento, California. !!! were initially signed to the experimental, punk label Gold Standard Laboratories, which was co-owned by Omar Rodriguez Lopez of the Mars Volta. Although both bands have little in !!! common on the surface, they share a common goal in experimenting with sounds and concepts in their work. While !!! owe more to the slinky bass lines and funky guitar licks of Niles Rogers in Chic, and Bootsy Collins in Parliament, than they do to the punk crowd, add in a dash of idle rock, and watch a million hipsters swoon to the sounds of booty shaking dance pop. The line-up has seen some changes over the last 20 years, but the sounds have stayed consistently solid and the output of the band with the seemingly unpronounceable name has stayed unfailingly funky. !!! are touring for their latest foray into booty shaking, indie punk, As If. It was lauded by Exclaim! magazine as, “one of the most enjoyable, if schizophrenic, dance albums of the year.” Which pretty much sums up a band who is used to taking genres and blurring the lines in order to craft music worthy of club goers and indie loving hipsters, respectively. The band, which splits their time these days between Brooklyn, New York, and Sacramento, California, have 4 dates in our fair state; one of which is at Gramps in Miami. Strangely, (and in an awesome turn of events) !!! are opening for themselves with their side project, Stereolad. This side project is a tribute to the influential English band, Stereolab, and brings a krautrock feel to the festivities. No matter your preference for dance pop or krautrock, there is sure to be something for everyone who likes to cut loose at Gramps when !!! roll into town. Are you ready to leave some scuffs on the dance floor? You better be! !!! and Stereolad play Gramps: 176 NW 24th Street, 33127, Miami, FL, US (305) 699-2669 on Wednesday, May 25th. Tickets range from $15 - $18 and the show starts around 10pm. ~ Tim Moffatt
La Luz play Gramps
La Luz
In a world where every weak garage-rock band to ever hear a Kinks album seems to have weaponized their reverb pedals in an attempt to somehow qualify the most basic rock ‘n’ roll drivel as something more mature or “surfy,” bands like La Luz are one in a million. The quartet of ladies developed their altogether unique, yet simultaneously classic, “surfnoir” sound in the unexpected fog and rain of Washington State, (though the band has recently made the move to the sunnier environs of California.) Since the release of the group’s most recent full-length, Weirdo Shrine, (produced by Ty Segall), La Luz has become (in our opinion) the only surf-rock band that matters right now. What’s more, they’re a band that could easily have called Miami home.
The brand of surf music La Luz purveys is chiefly the result of La Luz’s frontwoman/ guitarist Shana Cleveland’s creative labors, and can be described to the uninitiated as what might exist in the space between the station pumping out saccharine, broken-hearted girl group harmonies and the station blasting surf instrumentals at some undetermined point in the early ‘60s. Similar to the condition that often exists in South Florida, La Luz’s vibes are sonically quite sunny on the surface, however there is an underlying darkness to juxtapose those sounds in everything La Luz does, from the band’s lyrical content, to its penchant for spooky, minor key guitar vamps which show off everything Cleveland has learned in her years as a student, obsessing over the proper surf music of yore. That is to say that much like Miami’s music scene in general, things are more complex in La Luz’s music than what one might initially perceive. Lofty musical analysis aside, the ladies of La Luz have earned a rep for raucous live performances that inject the group’s ear-worm melodies and fiery guitar licks with the adrenalynn of a punk show and the energy of an ‘80s party scene, a perfect fit for Wynwood’s reigning party palace, Gramps. La Luz will play Gramps on May 4, with support from Veiny Hands, Ben Katzman’s Degreaser, and Massenger. Tickets are $12 online and $15 at the door. Gramps is located at 176 NW 24th St, Miami, FL, 33127. Show starts early at 9pm! Call 305.669.2669 for more info, or visit Gramps.com ~ Von Bader
Que Lastima Album Release Lake Worth is a quirky little town just outside of West Palm Beach. It’s an eclectic b o r o u g h whose visage is reminiscent of Key West and countless other sleepy, seaside towns. However, for such a small The Prescription community, the arts scene is extremely strong. Do you Que Lastima like punk rock? They’ve got it! Are you into hip hop? They’ve got some of the best! Gypsy punk is more your bag? Not a problem, what-so-ever. So, it’s no surprise that a band like Que Lastima would emerge from the fertile arts soup festering in the heat of the South Florida sun. The band consider themselves, “Dumpster Swing,” that is a pastiche of soul, punk, and swing music, with a healthy dose of roots and bad intentions. The band seems perfectly comfortable mixing gothic Americana and punk attitude an amalgamation that would make Tom Waits, King Dude, and Duane Peters proud to be bellied up to the same bar, swilling booze, chain smoking, and lamenting the loss of cold women on hot days. Paultergeist, the master of ceremonies of this motley ensemble, started the group after leaving his last musical incarnation, Viva Le Vox. He sent out a call for like minded miscreants into the ether and Que Lastima was conjured. The release party will feature Que Lastima, joined by the Zoo Peculiar, who are described as “circus music from outer space,” as well as Sunnyvale, Delray Beach’s “Alternacrunkcore” quartet, and the Hillside Spirit Revival, an Americana Indie Folk band, which, if any of these band descriptions are even remotely accurate, should prove to be an extremely interesting show- all brought to you by Aces High Tattoos, another staple of the community, in the small but extremely fruitful scene. Aces High regularly hosts a music fest that draws on the best of the best in the Lake Worth/ West Palm music scene. So, they know a thing or two about quality content in a crowded sea of talent. Come out, get weird, get drunk and be ready to dance to the best dumpster swing, outer space circus music, Alternacrunkcore, and Americana indie folk that Palm Beach has to offer. The record release for Que Lastima’s second full length album, “Tempered Tantrums.” is Saturday, May 21st at Propaganda, 6 South J Street, Lake Worth, Florida, 33460. Doors are at 8pm and $10 gets you in the door, and a copy of “Tempered Tantrums.” ~ Tim Moffatt
