There seems to be confusion in the collective press coverage of who does what in the psych-rock combo Post Animal. New York magazine, in its writeup, has band member Joe Keery playing drums, whereas Vice identifies Keery as a guitarist, and 20 Watts says it’s Keery on vocals as well as guitar.

All agree, however, that Keery’s other claim to fame is his acting work in a certain popular Netflix sci-fi/horror series... And based on what else is known about this six-piece from Chicago, the differing accounts of his band duties make a certain sense: In assorted interviews, Keery’s mates have spoken of how cooperatively they approach music. They all wind up at the same place — sensory songs that are both weighty and blissed out. But the path there can vary depending on who had an idea, who else was around to flesh it out, and how many people were in the band. POST ANIMAL

Post Animal began as a trio and expanded over the course of recordings including Post Animal Perform the Most Curious Water Activities (2015) and The Garden Series. A group of six recorded a forthcoming album, due this year, at a lake house in the upper Midwest. All of Post Animal’s music, in fact, sounds like it comes from a far-off place. There’s an expansively imagined, spatial quality to the airy singing, textural guitars and thudding drums. The first comparison that listeners tend to make is to Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker, and they’re not wrong, but where Parker is increasingly interested in popcraft, Post Animal are off exploring frontiers of lightness and heaviness, plumbing for new heights and depths in metal, prog and acid rock. Where Post Animal are ultimately headed is an intriguingly open question. Unlike, say, Mastodon, they’re not totally dug into one sonic pocket. Post Animal also switch up sometimes and play in a metered, dance- or coldwave-inspired pulse. But even then, the backbeat is still a string of muffled sonic booms, as Post Animal try to reconcile their starry gaze with an interest in music’s earthly present. PureHoney presents Post Animal on Wednesady, June 28 at Respectable Street w Peyote Coyote, The Water Colors and Nakatomi Plaza! sub-culture.org. June 29 at Churchills w. Tig Notaro & Trevor Noah Five years ago, comedian Tig Notaro spun her hardships into humor with her still-cringeworthy standup bit “Hello, I Have Cancer,” in which she deadpanned her way through true tales of breakups, bacterial infections and the death of her mother. She also revealed her own breast cancer diagnosis with this one-liner: “Guys, relax, everything’s fine. I have cancer. OK, it might not be OK. I’m just saying.”

Trevor Noah’s comedy profile has risen through similar stories of hardship, stemming from his racismfilled South African upbringing as the son of a black mother and white European father. Noah, who dropped his ninth comedy special “Afraid of the Dark” on Netflix in February, was raised in a poor household by women, who kept Noah indoors because it was illegal to be mixed-race under apartheid. Noah recalls this experience in his recent special “Trevor Noah: Lost in Translation” and also in his 2016 memoir, “Born a Crime,” but he’s just as accessible as host of the “The Daily Show With Trevor Noah,” where he keeps in his crosshairs the latest gaffes of the Trump presidency. Noah’s performance at the Kravis Center on June 18 will be his second local date in a year, after promoting his memoir last November at the Miami Book Fair.

Kwaku Alston

With unsparing honesty and a dry demeanor that barely registers as emotion, Notaro – Louis C.K. is widely credited with boosting her cred after seeing her “I Have Cancer” bit – has built a career on baring her personal scars. Sometimes literally: On her recent Emmy-nominated HBO special, “Boyish Girl Interrupted,” Notaro went topless, unbuttoning her shirt onstage to reveal double mastectomy scars. Notaro can fill an auditorium with Andy KaufmanTIG NOTARO style unease and shock value, but her material feels more like an act of defiance than it does a pity party, veering from experimental to confessional so smoothly it smacks of a parody of her life. Notaro’s upcoming set June 3 at the Broward Center –she’s halfway through her 2017 tour – is her highest profile gig in South Florida.

Black Marble Ghostly International

“This record has a lot more guitar on it,” says Chris Stewart of 2016’s It’s Immaterial. “I write and record everything on Black Marble records so when you hear a new instrument, it’s me trying to learn how to play something new.” BLACK MARBLE Since his debut EP Weight Against the Door in 2012, Stewart—under the moniker Black Marble— has continuously added and challenged the status quo of coldwave and dark pop minimalism. Stewart’s early work harkens back a purer era in synth-driven music and while there are numerous digital and electronic appliqués to his work, he has always managed to retain an organic feel to his music, making it enjoyable to dance to and rewarding to listen. Deeply tied to New York’s music scene saw a recent shift in attitude an execution with a relocation to the West Coast. “I’ve been concentrating more on art and photography out on the West Coast as well as writing music and touring; the quality of life is so much better in LA versus NY,” confesses Stewart. “My house is five times the size for the same money. In NY, if you have any spare space, there’s someone living on or under it. When I lived in Brooklyn, my friend paid $500 a month to live under a coffee table.” On this album, Stewart captures nuanced transitions through introspection and a staunch DIY belief. Almost like self-therapy, Stewart’s work is at the crossroads of his physical move, the passage of time and the hubris of life and cherishing everything he loves within the context of an album’s narrative. While it could almost derail from overstuffing, Stewart handles it expertly; like a Borgesian Aleph where everything exists at the same moment in time. On a tour that takes him through the Southeast and back on the road to his new home out west, Stewart finds humor in a Rolling Stones’ documentary in which they claimed “three weeks” of touring almost broke the band up, “I have no complaints about touring, I love it, but all I could think was like man, you guys are flying around in a private plane with catering and a briefcase full of drugs. Your logo is on the side of the plane. What’s so hard about that?” Black Marble and Body of Light at 9pm on Monday, June 19 at Gramps. Visit blackmarble.bandcamp.com. ~ Abel Folgar

Perfect Trip, Miami Psych Fest In the aftermath of the Fyre Festival and its Battle Royale set-up that left people stranded in the Bahamas having shelled out tons of dough for tents and sandwiches on a beach with nary a celebrity in sight; it’s a wonder that festival culture still thrives. But, while that situation was clearly a con, there is still a healthy culture of multi-day, music and arts festivals. For every Fyre Festival, there is a Riot-Fest or Marley Fest that brings like minded people together to enjoy themselves and their specific interests. South Florida seems to be the perfect spot for a psych fest, we have the beach, drugs, great bands and a party atmosphere that lends itself to getting lost in the midst of all of those vices. The Perfect Trip: Miami Psych Fest is a labor of love that was inspired, in part, by Levitation Festival. The idea behind, what will hopefully become an annual event: The Perfect Trip, is that while all MIAMI PSYCH FEST the bands that are playing may not be psych rock bands, they do fit together in a way that makes sense; basically, they would all be fun bands to hang with while under the influence. The acts on the bill range from sun drenched bummer rockers, Heavy Drag to the noise rock influenced Ian Iachimoe, the psych and folky music of the Dewars and the straight noise of the Kenny Millions Trio featuring Rat Bastard and Steven Bristol. The mixed bag of bands is an effort to capitalize on the local crowd and get everyone excited enough to come out and support the music community that has found new interest in festivals. With I.N.C, Three Points and the recent Rolling Loud Festival, The Perfect Trip joins a plethora of annual events that spotlight the best parts of the city and some of the most exciting up and coming acts South Florida can offer. While some of the more established festivals have the ability to book major acts, The Perfect Trip is more about establishing the festival status with locals and eventually getting the big name acts interested in playing. In other words: If you book it, they will come. The Perfect Trip: Miami Psych Fest takes place June 23 to June 25 at the Bridge in Miami. Tickets are just $10 a day, or $15 for a weekend pass. ~ Tim Moffatt

Manta Collection MANTA Collection presents the opposite of whatever neon colored stringy thing that is sold as swimwear to tourists in beachside shops in South Florida. The lines are sophisticated, and the fabrics appear in muted neutrals or patterns inspired by nature: stingray, banana leaf, marble. This is Swim Noir, brought to us by West Palm Beach based designer Janeane Marie. Starting her career in women’s Portland, Oregon with her eponymous line, fashion has taken Janeane to the East Coast, Europe, and Asia. Two years ago, she found herself again in South Florida designing a collection of swimwear for women that is inspired by the ocean at night. Janeane was never really interested in working for a big corporate fashion house. After a go on Project Runway Season 7, she found herself looking for new surroundings. MANTA COLLECTION In the summer of 2010, she got an offer the would bring her from the cool climes of the Pacific Northwest to the decidedly brighter Sunshine State as head designer for tattoo artist and fellow reality television veteran Kat Von D. Working for Kat in West Palm Beach allowed Janeane to really understand the global manufacturing process. For two years, she travelled to factories across China, sourcing fabrics and gaining insight into where the clothes we wear come from, and the humans who are behind their creation. The next big move took her to Brooklyn to design everything from winter coats to tops for Brooklyn Industries. Responsible for the entire Women’s collection, swimwear was the last thing on her mind. But, she missed the warm waters of South Florida, and later realized just how much as she flipped through her sketchbook to find illustrations of swimwear that she had been subconsciously designing. She and her husband returned to Florida when Janeane was 9 months pregnant with their first child. They left the city, and soon after, MANTA was launched. The line is undeniably modern and chic-- not to mention sourced and manufactured in the United States, using fabric made of recycled commercial fishing nets collected in the open ocean. The line debuted at Curve Expo in February 2016, and was picked up by Oak NYC in Brooklyn. The line is currently available online as well as in a few select boutiques. MANTA can be found on Garmentory.com and the Resort Collection featuring an artwork collaboration with artist Heather Chontos that will be available in November. Project: Project Series On November 1, 2010, Matt and Melissa Hudson were living in Texas and expecting their second lively child to come into the world. When Harrison Everett arrived, he didn’t make a sound.

CHAUCER

Harrison was born with undefined genetic issues. The Hudsons traveled to two hospitals in Texas and then a third in Florida to find answers, but doctors could not find a diagnosis. After 45 days at home in Florida, Harrison died in Matt’s arms.

“We were lucky to have such a supportive community during this crazy time, and we wanted to do the same for others,” says Hudson, who has two other children. The Hudsons founded Hope from Harrison to raise awareness resources and hope to families with children who have critical medical needs. It made sense for Matt and Christina to then pick music as the medium for their fundraising events, and this inspired the Project: Project 2017 Concert Series, which hosts a new slew of local bands every month at JJ Muggs Stadium Grill in downtown Abacoa in Jupiter. June 17 will feature Deerfield Beach roots-bluegrass-folk band Uproot Hootenanny, and July 8 will feature Chaucer, local power-pop trio Grey & Orange and Lake Worth singer-songwriter John Ralston. The Hudson family helps out several families each year, and this specific concert series is benefitting Bridgette Ludden and her daughter Stella. In the past, proceeds have gone to everything from nursing care to hardwood floor installation in a family’s house for a child who couldn’t have carpet due to his medical equipment dragging. “We fill in the gaps on things where insurance won’t help,” Hudson says. “We were so blessed when people helped us in those ways.” Community seems to keep coming through for the Hudsons: Uproot Hootenanny and John Ralston have played for them many times, and JJ Muggs offered their restaurant space for the benefit for free. Friends and family helped the Hudsons get through their grief over and struggle with losing Harrison, and now they bring this love back to them through music. “That’s what the whole ‘Project: Project play on words is: We’re projecting that love and compassion back into the community,” Hudsons says. The Hope from Harrison Project: Project 2017 Concert Series happens through August 12. Uproot Hootenanny will perform Saturday, June 17; and Chaucer, Grey & Orange and John Ralston will perform Saturday, July 8. Both shows start at 8pm at JJ Muggs Stadium Grill. 1203 Town Center Drive, Jupiter. Suggested donation of $10. hopefromharrison.org.

Hoot/Wisdom Recordings

HOOT/WISDOM RECORDINGS

“Hoot/Wisdom was created to provide students with the opportunity to apply what they learn in the classroom in a real setting,” says Jennifer Appel, Faculty Advisor to Hoot/Wisdom Recordings. “This year we had the pleasure of releasing the CompOWLation 5 consisting of a multitude of tracks covering a wide net of genres where the students were given the opportunity to produce from start to finish.” Established in 2003, administered and operated by faculty-supervised students as Florida Atlantic University’s (FAU) record label, Hoot/Wisdom is the Music Department’s Commercial Music Program in which students supplement their musical skills with real-world experience of the industry.

“The students began by searching for talent, develop the talent, record every song, and devise a proper marketing plan of attack with social media support, publicity, and an end-of-semester album release party,” says Appel of the process. To date, the enterprise has released over 20 projects, including full length albums, Eps and five compilations of FAU talent, the aforementioned CompOWLations (the Boca Raton school’s mascot is Owlsley the Owl). Back in 2015, Professor Alejandro Sanchez-Samper and his students produced the Latin Grammy-nominated tango album Bogotá – Buenos Aires for Colombian band Quinteto Leopoldo Federico. The Department’s pragmatic approach to preparing their music students for life after school is noted for concentrations in Commercial Music Composition, Music Technology and Music Business. Professor Michael Zager offers one reason behind this approach, “it’s a singles market and songs are shorter. This affects the way songs are produced. A listener’s response occurs in the first seven seconds!” Like real life, running a program like this faces certain challenges like coursework/ study loads, timing but finds that meeting these real world timetables, they “ensure the students understand the process it takes to complete a full album cycle from start to finish. We believe the outcome is professional and rivals the quality and artistry of professional record labels.” This gives FAU students a solid understanding of the industry and prepares them for one of the toughest industries out there. Adding a strong work ethic into the mix along with a sense of perseverance helps students understand the key to success: adapting to ever-changing trends. For more information regarding this program, visit hootwisdom.com and fau. edu/music.~ Abel Folgar
