Spred the dub South Florida being the tropical paradise it is, it’s no surprise we’d be home to a party-friendly reggaeska band like Spred The Dub, who’ve been making the tri-county rounds (and venturing several steps beyond) since forming in 2007.

What’s surprising is how few vintage-minded reggae bands live here. Sure, there’s always the steel drum guys Spred The Dub playing covers in weekend pickup groups on the beach. But a soul-and-blues-based rocksteady act has been a mirage in these parts since the latter days of the 90’s, when bands like Jive Step Bunch and Magadog ruled these shorelines. And even they were overshadowed by the comical clown music that was latter-day ska before it mercifully went out of fashion. Maybe it’s the way that pork pie hats go well with tailored suits and jazz influences make everything fancy, but there’s no denying the durable sophistication and appeal of old-school ska and rocksteady. Spred the Dub began as revolving players united by a need to jam rocksteady and dub. They coalesced into a core unit with a focus. “We like to call it good-time reggae, but it’s a mix of ska, a little punk, a little r&b, soul. It’s very eclectic,” band members said in April during an interview and live radio performance with Kenny Walker of 102.7 The Beach. They’ve been a go-to local opener for international reggae acts including The Skatalites, Black Uhuru and Yellowman. Their regular Monday night gig on Clematis Street in downtown West Palm was named best weekly party by Broward Palm Beach New Times in 2014. And they’re now Miami New Times’ best band of 2017. This month, Mick Swigert (vocals), Kevin Johnson (bass), Ryan Cross (drums) Sam Zpendyk (trombone) Eric Cohne-Greenberg (keyboards) and Hunter Hutchings (guitar) will release the band’s third album of original songs, “Friends and Enemies.” “We went all out to record and produce something we are really proud of,” the band says. “Working at Power Station Recording Studios [in Pompano Beach] with engineer Paul Kronk was a blast and made it easy for us to get our ideas on to tape.” Spred the Dub’s album release party is December 22 at Voltaire. of Montreal

An of Montreal concert is more than a show; it can be classified as an otherworldly experience. Band members in pig masks and leotards crowd surf on an inflatable raft, or wear robotic horse costumes with fake guns. Or beam rainbow camera projections on to their white outfits. Even after two decades, of Montreal still radiates the youthful quirk and ‘60s-inspired dancepop weirdness of the band you first saw in a dingy club selling PBRs.

The band’s forever-young frontman, Kevin Barnes, is the pin on which of Montreal spins. With blue glitter splashed across his eyelids, he passionately sings about girls (like his daughter, Alabee) and Greek myths. And though the music is psychedelic, Barnes himself is not an advocate of creativity through hallucinogenics. “well i don’t really do a lot of drugs, i’m more of a gin and tonic man now a days,” he posted in a 2013 Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything), “i don’t normally write ‘under the influence,’ I find it distracting and often it just creates obstacles, i tend to write better when i’m just speeding on Yerba Matte [sic].” Through 14 studio albums spanning 20 years — one album every 18 months on average — this mainstay of the eclectic, Athens, Georgia-based Elephant 6 Collective has channeled everything from pop to prog to electronica. Where else is there to venture? Of Montreal’s most recent album, “Innocence Reaches,” takes them back to their indie pop roots — but not entirely. Barnes is still pulling inspiration from the Beach Boys and the Beatles, but also borrowing from EDM groups like Jack U. He told The Aquarian in 2016 that he wanted to “pay more attention” to his contemporaries — potential heresy in indie circles. “It’s important for artists to live in the moment and not even consider … other people’s desires or their work,” Barnes said. The “Innocence Reaches” standout, “It’s Different for Girls,“ also has contemporary resonance in light of the sexual assault allegations shaking show business and politics. Barnes surveys the social terrain and sings, “They’re not expected to sit/ and take a lesser man’s shit.” Of Montreal with Christina Schneider’s Genius Grant and Dead and Loving It perform December 9 at Respectable Street in West Palm Beach. ~ Olivia Feldman

BEN KATZMAN’S DEGREASER

Degreaser

The open can of whupass that is Ben Katzman’s DeGreaser urges you to embrace, while you can, the electrical thrill of clutching real vinyl LPs. “Kiss! Madonna, too!/Until you buy your records from a feeding tube,” frontman Ben Katzman wails on “Record Store Babe,” a Mudhoneychurning ode to the indie music shop and the serene goddess therein who holds sway over both merch and clientele.

Katzman tells PureHoney he wrote it about an employee he met while playing an in-store at Fort Lauderdale’s Radio-Active Records: “I was like, ‘Who is this cool person?’ ” The song followed, and then a video shot on premises with said employee featured. “She thought it was hilarious,” he says. Humor is not something Katzman shuns on self-produced headbangers such as 2015’s full-length “Rok N Rol Community College” and the 2017 six-track “We Bled to Shred.” The ethic is lo-fi DIY and the product — from sounds to words to pictures — is replete with 20th Century signage: Iron Maiden, Cheap Trick, Spinal Tap and more. DeGreaser is like a race car covered in references. But under the protective coating of irony is a glimmer of true belief that kick-ass, riffdispensing music has credibility, too, whatever the solons of Pitchfork say. Katzman is likewise kidding-not-kidding about his next album, which he started recording in November in Los Angeles with indie rocker Colleen Green producing. He says it’s “a cross between Van Halen and blink-182 and Men Without Hats.” He also describes it as a reckoning. “A quarter-life crisis,” he says, with songs about “trying to make it all work through the confines of being a 25-year-old” and “living in the Internet age.” Even at his most antic, Katzman sounds interested in figuring out what’s true and what’s vapor. There’s a searching restlessness in his mobility — Boston, Miami, Los Angeles — and in his accomplishments to date: co-founding a record label (Bufu), managing one of its artists (Tall Juan), and playing in one friend’s band (White Fang) while also making, under his own name, three LPs and an EP about love, high school and rocking out. SINNERS & SAINTS

Sinners & Saints

Whiskey is the cause and cure for many terrible moments in a lifetime. It’s no wonder, then, that this devil’s libation goes so well with alt-country blues music, the soundtrack to broken hearts and dark nights of the soul. Sinners & Saints are a duo from Charlotte, North Carolina whose songs embody the spirit of both. Their music is a unification of several different styles, but with an emphasis on Americana — sort of a reckoning of past deeds and old ghosts through

an ambersoaked glass. Perry Fowler and Mark Baran have been kicking around and slinging their sounds since 2011. They have toured extensively and developed a knack for sharing bills with a diverse but kindred roster of musical acts, everyone from Celtic punkers Flogging Molly to indie folk darlings Sun Kil Moon to Southern soul band St. Paul and the Broken Bones to fellow acoustic two-piece Shovels & Rope. Live and on a pair of LPs, including 2017’s more country-flavored “On The Other Side,” the duo favors instruments and arrangements that keep the sounds layered and the roster slim: guitar, banjo, stand-up bass, harmonica and harmonies, and, for both of them, “foot-powered percussion from an abandoned drum kit,” in their own words. “I like to say we play mountain music,” Fowler told Middle Tennessee Music magazine.

While Fowler and Baran write of heartache and bad times, there is an uplifting camraderie in delivery. Even the most the most dire murder ballad has a cathartic ring that says no matter how bleak things look, everything will turn out alright. Sinners & Saints are about having people to laugh and cry with; so basically: friendship. As they say in their online bio, “We’re all sinners and we’re all saints, and we’re all in it together.” When Sinners & Saints bring their acoustic P.M.A. to South Florida, with the Wandering Girls and Boston Marriage as support, it should be a nice mélange of folk, country and experimental. Let’s see if we can conjure some laughs, a healthy dose of mischief, perhaps some puppy love, and drink it all down with a double shot of brown liquor. Sinners & Saints perform w The Wandering Girls, Boston Marriage on December 15 at Voltaire in West Palm Beach. ~ Tim Moffatt

Dan Hosker 6 Teajay Smith

A construction worker by day, Dan Hosker could probably hammer a nail truer than any punk rock musician who ever lived. But his preferred tool was guitar, and he swung that pretty straight, too. Like many of the best players, he learned the lead guitar clichés early on. Then he spent the rest of his life deconstructing them.

Dan loved to confound expectations. He was a blue collar guy who liked to read, a Renaissance man who could hang a door. He had opinions, but his charm was in the way he solicited yours. It was probably a bit like that for the countless musicians who played with Dan — like having an intense exchange with someone who creates space for you. That selflessness helps explain why Dan was so beloved in the South Florida original rock music scene for two decades and change, before his untimely passing in 2012 at age 46. He was best-known for his incendiary guitar work in the Holy Terrors, but numerous bands counted him as a member or collaborator. Dan Hosker

The compilation CD for the sixth Dan Hosker Music Continuum benefit features 33 previously unreleased tunes by artists who played, or were friends, with Dan. I could single out tracks — songs as infectious and as smart, as moving or as satisfying, as anything I’ve heard. But naming favorites wouldn’t be true to Dan’s spirit. He was far more open-minded than I. Suffice to say that the royalty of South Florida original rock from the 1990s forward are well represented here. Several artists on the disc — including Charlie Pickett, Nil Lara, Diane Ward, Jacuzzi Boys and Shark Valley Sisters — will be performing at this month’s DHMC6 benefit and release party in Miami. I can picture Dan smiling and nodding his approval at the music in this collection, “Unreleased: Distinguish the Sound.” Proceeds from the anthology’s sale and the concert help fund a music scholarship for students at Bishop Fenwick High in Peabody, Massachusetts — Dan’s alma mater. Proceeds also go to a stroke recovery fund for Xela Zaid (Alex Diaz), who’s also playing the release party. By taking part you’re furthering Dan’s legacy. You’re helping him build something. The DHMC6 release party is December 3 at Las Rosas in Miami. ~ Todd Anthony

Wu-Tang Clan Courtesy of III Points

It’s been nearly 26 years since the Wu-Tang Clan declared themselves “Nuthing ta Fuck Wit.” While most rappers indulge in braggadocio, Wu-Tang Clan have backed up their claim. What makes the collective’s rotating cast of MC’s fascinating is that, at their core, the original Wu-Tang members are hyper-aware vortices of pop culture. It’s a trait that informs their music and personas, and has given rise to a hip-hop empire built on samples of kung-fu flicks Wu-Tang Clan and outrageous rhyming. Even the various off-shoots and side projects are groundbreaking entities unto themselves: Gravediggaz, the Method Man & Redman collaborations (Red now an honorary Killa Bee); not to mention all the now-classic solo records. No other squad has translated so effectively and successfully into other realms of entertainment culture: RZA and GZA into soundtrack and movie production; Redman and Method Man into acting. Simply put, Wu-Tang are self-aware, well-rounded characters. Each original member chose his stage name from comic books in order to represent a facet of the group’s collective personality. They’re also MC’s with a knack for comic timing. The Clan has hit its share of speed bumps. Charter member U-God sued his mates in 2016 over unpaid royalties. Wu-Tang also did business with pricegouging “pharma bro” Martin Shkreli, who shelled out $2 million dollars in 2015 for the one and only copy of the Clan’s “Once Upon a Time in Shaolin.” (Shkreli has since re-sold the record on e-Bay at a nearly $1 million loss and, as a recent convict for securities fraud, could be facing jail time, so: Karma.)

This year during Art Basel, the Wu-Tang are coming to Miami during a stacked week of events. The Wu show at Mana Wynwood is being brought to the area by promoters Like Minded and III Points, and was originally supposed to be part of the Off Weekend Festival at Virginia Key. However, the festival was scrapped and all tickets were refunded after complications from Hurricane Irma. Virginia Key’s loss is Wynwood’s gain. We suggest using public transportation. Parking and traffic during Basel are nothing to fuck with. Wu-Tang Clan perform on December 9 at Mana Wynwood in Miami. ~ Tim Moffatt

Courtey of Davey Suicide

Davey Suicide

Davey Suicide

Extreme hairstyles? Check. Morning-after runny clown makeup? Check. Thick, grooving nü-metal licks with anguished scream-o vocals? Check. Bad blood with former record label, with the band ultimately prevailing? Check. Access to the Cenobites’ wardrobe? Check. Stage antics somewhere in the region of GWAR, Sweet Tooth’s “Twisted Metal” universe, and a hybrid of Steel Panther’s humor with Ministry’s industrial metal/punk crossings? Check.

This is Davey Suicide. Formed in 2010 and comprised of the eponymous front man, Drayven Davidson (drums), Niko Gemini (guitars), Needlz (keys), and Derek Obscura (bass), the band has had quite the ride in its seven years. Scouted by Linkin Park’s former manager and signed in spring of 2012 to Standby Records, the band toured extensively and released an EP and an LP. They had fans, momentum, and people’s attention. And then Davey Suicide got a taste of the music industry’s dark side with the release in late 2014 of their second album, “World Wide Suicide.” The following year-plus would be spent primarily in litigation, not music-making, with Standby accused of having abandoned the album instead of promoting it, and Davey Suicide effectively grounded. It took a performance of sorts to break the stalemate: In August of 2016, Davey himself posted a 10-minute video, entitled “Record Label Scandal,” detailing his troubles. The clip drew more than 1.2 million views, and Standby quickly settled, granting the band its freedom and ownership of its recordings. With catalogue tucked safely under wing, Davey Suicide have resumed the grind with a new album, “Made From Fire,” and a tour featuring a novel meet-greetand-get-tattooed package. Nü-metal might take some flack, but Davey Suicide transcend the genre. They don’t take themselves too seriously — just seriously enough to guarantee their followers a great experience. “Rock fans haven’t gone anywhere; they just need a reason to fall in love again,” is Davey’s oft-repeated credo. Buoyed by their legal win, they’re back in control of a destiny that looks bright. And it’s no mystery who they’re “sick, so sick of” in the lyrics of their recent single “Rise Above.” Davey Suicide perform December 13 at Respectable Street w. Dark Basel

Sebastian Dooris

Local opinion of Art Basel varies, but with musical performances multiplying alongside the parties and installations, it’s welcome to see an industrial-tinged concert lineup casting a shadow across the glitz. Club Space’s new medium-sized venue, The Ground, hosts the aptly named and heavyhitting Dark Basel, a co-op between Anti-Language Records and Too Much Love Magazine.

3TEETH

weeklong invasion of plasticine people.

From the classic industrial metal of 3TEETH, the surf-inclined dark wave of Vowws, and the modern New Wave synth pop of Bestial Mouths all representing L.A., to local favorites Astari Night and Sci-Fi Affair counterprogramming sunny South Florida, Dark Basel promises a respite from the

3TEETH’s newest album, “<shutdown.exe>” is the group’s sophomore effort, and members Alexis Mincolla (vocals), Xavier Swafford (keys), Andrew Means (drums), and Chase Brawner (guitars) have grown considerably in the three years since their self-titled debut. High-profile tours with Tool, Primus and Rammstein have undoubtedly helped shape the tone of this record. The end result is a cohesive narrative in which the listener follows the process of rebooting and reformatting with plenty of social commentary thrown into the mix. Their single “Atrophy,” draws allegorical comparisons between politics and the complexities of S&M relationships. Vowws have been making waves for a spell now and while they’ve ebbed and flowed through moments of darkness, it has been their surf-rock sensibilities that have propelled them into the forefront as a thoroughly enjoyable act. From collaborating with Gary Numan in 2015 to their upcoming album, “Under the World,” Vowws’ profile continues to grow with crossover appeal. Their hype single, “Forget Your Finery,” might be a call to arms against societal norms, but it is also a pleasurably danceable number. Recalling the erotic exotic of Siouxsie Sioux, the angular moments of KUKL, and tribal digitization, Bestial Mouths is fueled by the engrossing silkiness of Lynette Cerezo’s voice — as at home over lushly produced soundscapes as it is guiding clean minimalism. She’s a banshee enchantress with soulful glow — a guiding light out of the morass and hubris this week in art has unfortunately come to be known for. Dark Basel takes place December 2 at The Ground in Miami. ~ Abel Folgar
