BUMBLEFEST 2018: LUMERIANS, scott yoder, santoros, gustaf
Where do you go today for that — to support the insurgents whose first big step up would have been from creaky vans to back-ofthe-pack tour buses? Who showcases, as their mission, the offbeat emerging talent that used to be the festivals’ forte? Here in South Florida, there’s BUMBLEFEST, a block party of great indie performers assembled at a quintet of West Palm Beach venues on one downtown street, in a sort of scavenger hunt of fun. Voltaire and Respectable Street anchor this year’s Bumblefestivities, with Hullabaloo, Kismet Vintage and Subculture Coffee rounding out the Clematis Street circuit — nothing so far apart that one can’t wander on foot to take in all the sights and sounds. Bumblefest belongs to a breed of hometown festival such as Fun Fun Fun in Austin, Texas and III Points in Miami that absolutely wants your freak flag flying. They’re here to connect you with the new, exciting and sometimes strange music you didn’t know you needed. Sure, you could pile into Sunfest to see the Pixies or Ice Cube or whichever legacy act is playing a waterfront jammed full of people who aren’t really interested in music. Or you could head farther west to the 500 Block of Clematis Street to see the bands that everyone else will be talking about one, five or ten years out. More than two dozen acts will play. Here are a few of the highlights: — Hailing from Oakland, California, LUMERIANS are what Silver Apples and Kraftwerk would sound like collaborating on a psychedelic space rock opera. The group, formed in 2006 with a name that references “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” is known for incredible live shows with trippy visuals to enhance the equally out-there sounds. A Lumerians audience is basically lulled into a trancelike state that is captivating to behold and insane to be a part of — a full frontal-cortex assault that is part cult of personality and part alien abduction. Listening to albums such as “Transmalinnia,” their slowto-gestate 2011 debut, or 2013’s “The High Frontier,” is like a Marshall Applewhite ascension ritual that you actually get to live through. ”I guess we live in a spaceship that bends the universe around it rather than flying,” a Lumerian explained to Dangerous Minds in 2012, “or maybe it’s a beach house, except instead of sand and water outside, it’s got taco trucks and human trafficking.”
SANTOROS (Los Angeles)
Veterans of bills with the Butthole Surfers and more recently My Bloody Valentine, the band is presently touring in support of “Call of the Void,” an album exhibiting shades of John Carpenter movie music and the Tangerine Dreamchanneling Survive — they of the “Stranger Things” theme. It seems fitting that an act from Oakland, one bridge over from the birthpod of hippie culture, would be the new ambassadors of envelopepushing, audiovisual sex, drugs and space travel.
— SANTOROS is a pure Mexican garage-rock, psychedelic-surf act straight from Los Angeles. The group is currently touring in support of “Bad Habits,” a four-song EP that’s all jangly, beach-kissed fun in the sun. “When You Cry at Night” starts off as an instrumental throwback to the Ventures and evolves into a keyboard-driven pop song about forlorn love on a sand dune someplace.
Santoros embrace both their Mexican and Southern California roots. Mostly raised in the San Fernando Valley, the band members cut their teeth on L.A.’s Echo Park music scene, starting out as drinking buddies who decided to jam and liked what they heard. The brotherhood that is Santoros was raised around music, surfing and the west coast lifestyle. It doesn’t hurt to have oldies stations and the mighty KROQ-FM to nurture bourgeoning musical passions, and it’s no surprise that this combination of SCOTT YODER (Seattle) surf, sun and fun would translate into the sounds the band is making; it’s been the West Coast rock muse since forever. PureHoney booked Santoros for an amazing Delray play almost four years ago when they tripped through town with Psychomagic. @littlemisskasey

The halcyon ’90s saw the rise of touring music festivals that paired iconic headliners and cult powerhouses with their re sp ective scenes’ upand-comers. Lollapalooza, Warped, Ozzfest, H.O.R.D.E., and the less genrebound, more LUMERIANS (Oakland) gender-powered Lilith Fair — before they all dwindled down from cutting-edge to “meh,” discontinued or stopped traveling, they formed a movable ecosystem that broke major musical groups in their infancy and connected audiences with many acts they otherwise would never have seen.
— SCOTT YODER could easily be mistaken for the 21st century version of Marc Bolan. He’s a glam rock-inspired folk fella based in Seattle who spent his formative years playing in the Pharmacy for Burger Records, and a self-described “glitter-folk elf prince … touring the world with his backing band of glammy freaks and misfits.” Yoder’s specialty is the dreamy, spell-casting ode to impossible love. Think Big Star and Donovan at their most turned-up sharing a cloud with Nick Drake in a dreary sky and you’re starting to get the picture. All pomp and circumstance that’s simultaneously way too much, but never enough, the music is psych-pop and punk raised on the promises of T-Rex and Ziggy Stardust, and filtered through a lo-fi dreamscape. Check out Yoder’s “Goodbye Lady Day,“ and be prepared for the possibility of numerous in-concert romantic breakups, with people so transported by the experience of Yoder in person they ditch their significant others to go live among elven royalty. The band snuck into town on a Tuesday night three months ago and performed an intimate super secret surprise pop up for us at Kismet Vintage. If you were there… you know;) GUSTAF (New York) — GUSTAF, the nom de plume of New York-based artist Lydia Gammill is, in the band’s own estimation, an irresistibly danceable combination of ESG, Jonathan Richman and Alan Vega. Dropping those names in an official bio sets the cool bar very high, but Gustaf sounds confident enough to deliver. A debut album is due this summer, in time for Gustaf’s Bumblefest debut. The group itself — Gammill with Tine Hill, Tarra Thiessen, Angela Tornello and Vramshabouh — hasn’t been around for long. But Gammill is a veteran player and has put the work into making people sit up and take notice in a place, Brooklyn, where you can’t swing a cat without hitting a musician. — PLEASURES are our local (Saint Petersburg) heroes dabbling in experimental psych rock and dark noise abstractions that wouldn’t be entirely out of place in a David Lynch film. The band describes itself as dark and stormy space rock from the Swamplands of Southwest Florida and quite frankly it would be hard to argue against that description. They’re part BATTLES, part Tame Impala, PLEASURES (St. Pete) with a dose of Grizzly Bear, but completely original in their stage presence and sound Bumblefest (33 bands on 6 stages) takes place on September 8 on the 500 block of Clematis Street in downtown West Palm Beach. facebook.com/bumblefest Limited $5 advance tickets go on sale Friday July 27 at Ticketfly ~ Tim Moffatt
CHAMPAGNE SUPERCHILLIN’ “Champagne Superchillin’” There’s something playfully snobby about the moniker yet also kind of innocent. Almost as though a French person who’s only consumed American TV had to come up with something telling of French culture for American audiences. Fronted, as it happens, by a French expat, Juliette Buchs, and fully realized by keyboardist/guitarist Ben Trimble and drummer Charles Garmendia, the band formed in Nashville, where Buchs had CHAMPAGNE SUPERCHILLIN’ landed after marrying an American musician. Trimble and Garmendia, formerly of Fly Golden Eagle and Clear Plastic Masks, respectively, found in Buchs a fellow traveler interested in new routes through familiar sonic territory. The path led them through French music (think yé-yé and French new wave), American surf, ’60s pop, heroin-chic jazz and Latin/World sounds. Driven and muscular without sacrificing sensuality and approachability, the music is oddly reminiscent of the legendary Lebanese chanteuse Fairuz crossed with the Gainsbourg family tree. More contemporary listeners will fit them on the same shelf as Nouvelle Vague and SoKo (the Cat). Relocating to Brooklyn with two albums in tow — their 2017 full-length debut, “Destino!” and this year’s follow up, “Beach Deep” — has been a boon for the band. Their sophomore effort is infuriatingly delicious — no need to speak French to enjoy. It hits all the points and lays out the emotional tonality in a meticulously balanced manner. It truly is a summertime masterpiece best enjoyed with the ceremonial sabrage of a cold jeroboam while chilling super hard by the pool. More than a welcome and refreshing entry to the current playlist of American music, Champagne Superchillin’ is the perfect soundtrack for role-playing a bygone era without sinking into retro tropes. Is it a lazy name? Non, mon ami. What it is, is a hyper-aware moniker for a group that knows what it wants and, in a very short time, has gotten it. Where they go next will undoubtedly be just as, if not more, amazing. Champagne Superchillin’ performs an early show with Donzii on August 4 at Voltaire in West Palm Beach. ~ Abel Folgar
THE SAVANTS OF SOUL Years go by and Gainesville, Florida keeps on keeping on. Synonymous with DIY punk rock and college culture for close to four decades, the deceptively sleepy campus town has churned out some of the most beloved acts in punk and ska over the years. It makes sense — but it still kind of amazes — that as a center for cultural and educational exchange, the University of Florida environs continues to produce newer and cooler acts, not all strictly punk.

The Savants of Soul, formed in 2011, are, in their own words, a “9-piece retro-soul group performing original soul music inspired by the sounds of the 1960s, contemporary retro-soul groups and the group’s diverse collection of influences ranging from punk to hip-hop to Chicago blues to 1950s cool jazz.” THE SAVANTS OF SOUL
Five members are Gainesville natives, with one Texas transplant and the remaining three from elsewhere in Florida, giving the band a genuine hometown feel that carries over into its infectious music. Frontman Justin McKenzie — the self-proclaimed “Reverend of Rhythm” — and trumpeter-vocalist Mandy Ferwerda lead the way, joined by other veterans of the Gainesville scene: horns of Jacob Armstrong, Jordan Jones and Ray Vigil, guitarist Will Campbell, keyboardist Zack Emerson and the rhythm section of bassist John Gray Shermyen and drummer Alex Klausner. With a handful of EPs and singles also to their credit, the Savants’ lone fulllength effort to date, “Downtown Sound,” is the ideal showcase for a band that has taken the time to perfect its internal chemistry and develop an experience for its audience. Whereas someone might consider the retro-kitsch a little bit contrived, the Savants do right by their nomenclature and evangelize effortlessly; their love for the sound they’re working is genuine and respectful but not afraid to be jolted with something new. Danceable is an understatement; they’re a full-on, out-of-body experience. That they play all kinds of engagements off the club circuit — festivals, weddings, mitzvahs — is a testament to how much they want to share their joy. Dust off your Docs, your 2-tones, your patent leathers — anything you like to move in — and catch them live. The Savants of Soul perform with Public Sounds Collective during Funktion on August 16 at Voltaire in WPB. savantsofsoul.com ~ Abel Folgar

HAUTE TENSION Change is good. Imagine a world in which we’re grooving to the likes of the Tea Set, the Salty Peppers and the Weak Heart Drops — and then thank the musical heavens that those outfits instead became Pink Floyd, Earth, Wind & Fire and the Clash, respectively. As sound evolves, so, too, do band names. Take Haute Tension, the band formerly known as Mo’Booty, as further proof of evolution — from surf-ish, guitar-driven pop punk to HAUTE TENSION compositions fleshed out through myriad influences such as French new wave, decent top 40 and lo-fi home recordings. “We saw a street sign that read ‘haute tension’ while touring in France last summer and were inspired by the concept of a reference to Booty’s [a.k.a. Alexandre Merbouti] French and Algerian heritage,” bassist Monica McGivern tells PureHoney, “as well as the general high tension of past and present world issues.” As the band approached its third birthday and the release of its debut album, a new name beckoned. And while a lot has changed, the drive that animates McGivern and guitarist Merbouti has not. They’ve embodied the will-playanywhere DIY spirit that keeps South Florida’s music scene afloat. “There is this feeling of setting a clean slate with the new name but in a way it gives a sense of clarity and allows us to push ourselves forward in a more focused way,” says McGivern. Haute Tension has company in recent rebranding with a couple of other bands: Las Nubes (nee Smvt) and Glass Body (the Water Colors). The coincidence has yielded plans for a merry triple-booking of “The Formerlies,” together for one night, date pending, as part of Haute Tension’s grand, ambitious micro-tour of greater Miami. The forthcoming “31 Concerts in 31 Days in Dade” will precede U.S. and Europe dates in support of the debut album. On tour, McGivern and Merbouti will be joined by drummer Nabedi Osorio whereas the LP features new addition Cody Mentelos on the skins. “We will always continue to evolve as a band,” says McGivern, “and now that the first album is recorded, that leaves us room to experiment with something new.” Haute Tension throw a record release party on August 31 at Sweat Records in Miami. hautetensionband.com ~ Abel Folgar

AMERICAN FOOTBALL Halftime for American lasted almost 15 years.
Football
For 15 years after the 1999 release of their self-titled full-length debut, the emo trio from Urbana, Illinois didn’t record a note. American Football toured behind that first record, but soon everybody returned to nonFootball pursuits even as the album gained a life of its own.
A 2014 reissue and well-received mini-tour opened the door to a reunion in the studio. A new album, also dubbed “American Football,” AMERICAN FOOTBALL emerged in 2016, the same year Rolling Stone put the first LP on its list of emo’s 40 greatest. This year finds the band reconnecting with its dedicated fan base on a five-day jaunt that wraps in Fort Lauderdale — American Football’s first time in Florida. Drummer and trumpeter Steve Lamos tells PureHoney that touring is more enjoyable today. “I’m glad to be at it at this point in my life; it makes more sense to me now,” says Lamos, now a Ph.D and associate professor of English at the University of Colorado Boulder. “I think I was a little too obsessed with the whole lifestyle of playing music and the kind of running around, and I think I had this vision of what touring should be or could be, even though I’d never really done it.” Lamos, singer and guitarist Mike Kinsella and guitarist Steve Holmes (joined on recent tours by bassist Nate Kinsella) stood apart from contemporaries such as Sunny Day Real Estate and Jimmy Eat World by virtue of intricate math-rock rhythms and jazz melodies. They captured heartsick teen angst in songs like “Never Meant” and “Honestly” while using the instruments to really tell the story. Now that they’re husbands and dads with kids under 10, themes of aging, commitment and mortality color the 2016 edition of American Football. “I think in contrast at this point we all have lots else going on, and so when [touring] happens like on these long weekends or these five-day stretches, we can appreciate it for what it is,” says Lamos. “We have a chemistry that I think has been hard to replicate.” American Football and special guests You Blew It! perform Aug. 11 at Revolution Live in Fort Lauderdale. americanfootballmusic.com. ~ Olivia Feldman

zigtebra play voltaire Zigtebra could be your best friend’s indie band. They send postcards from their van to fans who leave them concert reviews on Facebook and, as audiences here will discover, they truly want people who see them to feel a connection. Chicagoans Emily Rose and Joe Zeph met through an LGBTQ dance troupe called “Pure Magical Love” and were artunderground veterans even before they jointly gravitated ZIGTEBRA toward synth pop as an accessible form of indie music. With influences as varied as Animal Collective and Aphex Twin, the drum-and-synth grids that give shape to Zigtebra tracks such as “The Greatest Love” and “Spectre” complement an emotional but fun lyricism that explores love and friendship as well as the darkness life can bring. “I want to write music that can be an anthem for an emotion,” Rose tells PureHoney. “If I’m feeling so grieved about heartache, I want a song that is just total, treacherous agony that I’m feeling, because I know I’m not alone in that feeling.” Rose and Zeph in 2017 took on a couple of ambitious projects: a day-jobobliterating four-month tour, and a commitment to create one new song and music video for each month of the year. They completed both assignments, even after Rose’s laptop was stolen, and re-recorded the songs once they came off the road for a planned new album. “Stuff came out of that project that wouldn’t be there if I was waiting for the perfect inspiration, the perfect setting, the perfect studio with air conditioning and a coffee,” Rose says. “It made us write music in dirty Taco Bells in the middle of Texas and record vocals in a hot van in Flagstaff, and having cramps and being sweaty and mad. Some of the best things in life are the things you worked hardest for.” Expect their West Palm Beach show to be, according to Rose, slightly spooky and sparkly,’ and “pretty dance-y, but a little strange.” “I want it to be an experience,” she says. “I definitely want them to come and bring a friend because it’ll be a fun connection moment.” Zigtebra, Donzii and Monster Teeth perform August 23 at Voltaire in West Palm Beach. sub-culture.org ~ Olivia Feldman
