ORDINARY BOYS play voltaire While people might roll their eyes at the mention of a cover band, they might want to give Miami’s Ordinary Boys: The Smiths & Morrissey Tribute Act a shot. The group’s haunting recreation of this influential ’80s British band and its iconic singer is an apt precursor to the spookiest day of the year — and a break from the scary, cringe-inducing 2018 version of Morrissey. Founded in 2010, Ordinary ORDINARY BOYS Boys debuted at Churchill’s Pub in Miami and have gone through several lineup changes in a continuous effort to refine and deliver the meticulous sound that is a trademark of both the Smiths and frontman Morrissey in his solo incarnation. Ordinary Boys sound anything but when they hit the stage. A voice not unlike that of Manchester’s Pope of Mope pours out of lead singer AJ Navarrete, who sounds just as emotional and pleading. Smooth guitar chords a la Johnny Marr by Michael Setton accompany the vocals. Bass player Uned Correa, guitarist and keyboardist Byron Lopez and drummer Rees Bridges round out this polished reflection of the original. Named after a song from Morrissey’s 1988 debut solo album, “Viva Hate,” the group plays solo Morrissey mainstays such as “Irish Blood, English Heart” and Smiths perennials including “How Soon Is Now?,” “This Charming Man” and Navarrete’s personal favorite, “There is a Light That Never Goes Out.” Their music videos, filmed in black and white, exude nostalgia. And when they play, it’s easy to forget that they’re just some dudes from Miami. In an interview with The New Tropic in 2017, Navarrete talked about how he and the rest of the band balance performing with their day jobs; in essence, their ordinary lives: “I’m not saying we’re just as good or better than the real thing, but we get to recreate it. And the band is great — any little hiccup will be picked up immediately and we’ll be able to recoup in a millisecond.” It takes real work for a tribute band to sound like their heroes, which this outfit has managed to do while still making the music sound effortless. THE breeders at fillmore mb It’s odd to think that the Breeders, whose power resides in their unmatched sibling chemistry, began life at the dawn of the 1990s without one of the two sisters on board. Bassist and singer Kim Deal started the band with Tanya Donnelly of Throwing Muses and Belly fame. But twin Kelley Deal soon stepped in on guitar and vocals, and the rest, as they say …
Hypnotic in a way that many bands aim for but never quite THE BREEDERS achieve, the Breeders would go on to represent everything that made college rock, or alternative music in the original sense, so special. They are haunting, abrasive and all heart. Kim was integral part of the Pixies, with Frank Black the blueprint band for the later emergence of grunge. The Pixies pioneered the loud-quiet-loud songwriting sonics embraced by none other than Nirvana front man Kurt Cobain. Kelley brings a different, complementary flavor to the project than former Black Francis collaborator Kim — and it shows. Breeders harmonies can slay you in an instant, whereas some of the recent Pixies output minus Kim, who quit in 2014, is hit-or-miss.

The Breeders never sound out of place or out of date. Their new album, “All Nerve,” could have been released right alongside “Last Splash” — their breakthrough album with the playful, peak-’90s single, “Cannonball” — and would have sounded just as peak. Likewise there’s nothing in 2018 to undercut its production, songwriting or playing. It’s as if every time the Deals pick up their instruments and decide to sing together, they’ve lost no time at all. To call the group magical seems simplistic, however; the Deals haven’t cakewalked to where they are today. Kelley has had very public brushes with rehab. Kim’s other ventures have been up and down — her side project The Amps was a killer band that produced an amazing album, “Pacer,” that almost nobody heard. The Breeders is where Kim and Kelley Deal really shine. They are indelibly kin, and tough to imagine apart. Twenty-one is a milestone: A gateway in years lived to legalized drinking and gambling; and the first full turn around the sun after completing that second decade. For any person, that’s celebration enough. For a band in the modern era, it’s a miracle. Especially if your band’s moniker is a throwaway joke taken from the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band.
DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE
Yet here they are, alt-stalwarts Death Cab for Cutie. Twenty-one years after standing themselves up in the musicproud Pacific Northwest, they’re a model of atmospheric, meticulously made rock; a major-label act with place of pride in indie lore; and a lineup with just enough (in)stability to keep throwing off creative sparks.
In August they released “Thank You for Today,” their first full-length since the 2014 departure of a founding member, guitarist Chris Walla. With the band now fully led by another founder, singer and guitarist Ben Gibbard, “Thank You for Today” is garnering mostly positive reviews. For Gibbard, now in his 40s, songwriting combines his trademark quasi-sociopolitical commentary with a middle-aged sense of patience. For a band that managed to polarize its fan base with recent recordings, this is probably the best case of damage control for possible detractors zeroing in on Walla’s lack of input. In a recent interview with Billboard, Gibbard said the recording environment for “Thank You for Today” compared favorably to earlier studio outings. “It was very open,” Gibbard said. “I don’t want to frame this as a Chris problem. He’s a brilliant producer, [but] a lot of times we would be seeing things differently, and passiveaggressively fighting for our ideas.” Gibbard’s bandmates today are co-founding bassist Nick Harmer, drummer since 2003 Jason McGerr, and two touring members — keyboardist Zac Rae and guitarist Dave Depper — who boarded Death Cab permanently after Walla quit. While 21 doesn’t always denote maturity, it is time enough for some form of it to develop. Death Cab for Cutie are not a band that needs to be told to “grow up.” If anything, they look poised to step into a new chapter. HYPOLUXO at voltaire With two founding members from Palm Beach County, it’s a homecoming of sorts any time Brooklyn-based Hypoluxo plays South Florida.
The band is in the mold of urbane, post-punk revivalists like Interpol and Parquet Courts. Samuel Cogen’s baritone ripples like that of The National’s Matt Berninger, accompanied by heavy shoegazing guitar from Cameron Riordan. Riordan manages to churn out garageHYPOLUXO like noise on one song and on the next conjure smooth, effects-pedal ambience a la Virginia’s Wild Nothing. Tight drumming by Marco Ocampo and cool bass lines by Eric Jaso complete the eclectic musical group. Cogen and Ocampo form the band’s core — musical collaborators since high school and, at one point, both residents of Hypoluxo Road in Lake Worth before they moved to New York, taking the street name with them.
Their second LP for the Broken Circle label, “Running On A Fence,” released September 21, is full of songs about emotional experiences from both childhood and adulthood, expanding on 2016’s “If Language” and a four-song EP, “Taste Buds.” With its wide-ranging sonic palette, the new album delivers on a vow Cogen made when he spoke to PureHoney in 2016 and said, “We love the gloomy vibe we have been doing for a while which will never leave, but I want to experiment with different stuff.” On the new song “Trust Fall,” Cogen takes the listener through the harrowing experience of an almost catastrophic leg injury he suffered in the eighth grade. “I was unable to walk for a year,” Cogen said in an interview with The 405, “and the medication I had to take made me feel so unlike myself during those already awkward years. I hardly knew who I was. ‘Trust Fall’ is about the way I was feeling.” You can tell these guys are sensitive, and not just by their song lyrics; they identify themselves on their Facebook page by their astrological signs. The band has had its share of line-up changes. John Archuleta, who played on “If Language,” is no longer aboard. (He and former members Anthony Tredinnick and Matthew Hershoff are also identified by their star signs.) cursive at culture room Omaha, Nebraska is, for most people, less a destination than a middle-America reference point. But it’s also the longtime home of Saddle Creek, the Great Plains indie mecca that has put out foundational music by Conor Oberst and, from 1997 to 2012, the band Cursive. And whereas Oberst favors different incarnations — Bright Eyes, Desaparecidos, Monsters of Folk, et. al. — members CURSIVE of Cursive always seem to find their way back to this band as the outlet for their best, most adventurous ideas. Their groundbreaking 2003 album, “The Ugly Organ,” blended indie and unexpected elements with an audacity that influenced a generation of musicians. Using cello, for example, in post-hardcore music was a gamble with a high risk of fan rejection. But the experimentation paid off. It also marked a kind of endpoint. The ’90s had been good to Cursive, who were lauded for their concept-album ambitions and mentioned favorably alongside another great post-hardcore band, At the Drive In. It was also a period of relentless touring and life change. In 1998, founding guitarist Steve Pedersen quit to go to law school, and the band went on hiatus. Frontman Tim Kasher got married, moved to Portland, Oregon, and got divorced. Kasher channelled that experience into a band reunion (minus Pedersen) and into Cursive’s critically acclaimed 2000 album, “Domestica.” By the time of “The Ugly Organ,” it was clear to Kasher the band needed another break, and they approached the album as a summation and a swan song. Cursive poured everything into it, thinking it could be their last. That absence held for about two years. “Happy Hollow,” (2006), “Mama, I’m Swollen,” (2009) and “I Am a Gemini” (2012) followed. As it turns out, the longest interval between Cursive albums — six years — was the one bringing us to this year’s “Vitriola,” the band’s first album on their own 15 Passenger label. The core lineup is one that hasn’t played together since “Happy Hollow”: Kasher, singerguitarist Ted Stevens, bassist Matt Maginn and founding drummer Clint Schnase. “Vitriola” is also the first Cursive album to feature cello since “The Ugly Organ,” with cellist Megan Siebe and keyboardist Patrick Newbery rounding out the lineup. WEEN play fillmore mb Ween is the best band. It doesn’t matter if you aren’t familiar with their catalog; they are your new favorite band now, full stop. And how can this be? Ween is an amalgam of every genre ever created to please human ears, wrapped into a “Boognish” burrito that arrives in the guise of Dean and Gene Ween.
Do you like the Beatles? What Deaner was talking about on WEEN 1994’s “Chocolate and Cheese” is an amazing homage to late-1960s Paul McCartney-isms. You like sea shanties? The Mollusk (1997) has you covered; it also has heart-shattering break-up songs, new wave freak-outs and a Broadway number. Ween has a country album. Ween does everything; they are the apotheosis of music The band fooled us all for a minute there by stating that they were breaking up. In reality it was more of an open-ended pause to let the members deal with their inner demons. Gene blindsided Dean by announcing the split in an interview without having briefed his band mate first. Dean went on to captain a fishing vessel (as you do) while Gene worked on his addictions. The world was briefly devoid of free-form silliness and genre-defying brilliance; collectively, as a planet, we were the worse for it. They’re back now, and on the road, confounding the uninformed with their inspired, style-jumping shows. It’s not every day that a band can be compared to the Butthole Surfers and Phish in the same sentence, but Ween is not any other band. Dean and Gene are graciously making our backyard the first stop on their “Florida-Georgia Line Tour.” Alas, the earlier sabbatical left room for one of the band’s old labels to misbehave. Hence, the newly released “Bananas & Blow” — an unsanctioned cash grab combining most of their 1990 debut, “GodWeenSatan: The Oneness,” with other Ween tracks owned by the label. This was a very un-Ween thing to do, but our heroes will prevail as they slay the beasts of naiveté across the land, one night at a time, winning over converts and spreading the gospel of Ween. andy dale petty at voltaire “I find myself very influenced by the weather and the seasons,” says modern troubadour Andy Dale Petty. “A certain song emerges when you’re driving in the blinding rain and snow. A very different one comes through when its spring in a vegetable garden. “My year usually revolves around touring with music,” Petty continues in a talk with PureHoney, “working shortterm labor jobs, growing food, sleeping outside as much as possible.” Born in Alabama and betrothed to the four winds, this young folk musician with a curled mop of hair and an earnest smile is an anachronism, in the good way, in an era that has forgotten its roots in the rush to technology — ANDY DALE PETTY forgotten what the soil feels like. Petty cites Leadbelly, Woody Guthrie and Big Bill Broonzy as early musical discoveries at his local shop, the late Sunburst Records in Huntsville, Ala.; at flea markets and antique stores he visited as a boy with his aunts; and in his exposure, he says, to “old instruments like zithers and accordions as well as old tintypes and farm tools.” He bought his first Kay banjo, which he considers “the rawest of all the stringed instruments,” at age 15. On Petty’s latest, “Frick’s Lament,” from 2015, he distills old-world transience into 12 fully-realized tracks of Americana that run the folk-canon gamut from Appalachian-styled numbers to story-driven ramblers to ethereal instrumentals. But the work isn’t nostalgia so much as a re-envisioning. “I’d like to think of myself as a somewhat modernized human preforming a collection of songs taken out of my life on stringed instruments,” he says. “My songs are about dreams, characters, places, memories.” This auteur of American primitive has also found audiences abroad — and the serendipity that calls to every wanderer. Touring not long ago in Italy’s Veneto region, Petty landed at Outside Inside Analog Recording Studio in Montebelluna and worked surrounded by antique instruments and tape machines. A key to Petty’s musical life is the seeming lack of planning or long-term concern — a devotion to his art that further cements his image as a vagabond, but again, in a good way.

viral video A good scare is a great thing for Jan Valentine of Technique Records in Miami, who is helping Technique to open Viral Video, a section of the record store carved out for strange movies you don’t stream off of a server — artifacts of arthouse, foreign, Giallo, grindhouse, B-movie and everything in between. Especially horror. Viral Video’s launch happens just ahead of Halloween. “We will be celebrating by spinning a movie soundtrack-based vinyl set, playing weirdo horror flicks, movie-related raffles and other horror-themed goodies,” Valentine tells PureHoney. “There will also be a costume contest so we ask that everyone dresses up as their favorite horror-movie character and the winner will walk away with a killer prize.” Better-known as the bassist for Shroud Eater and head honcho at Terribly Girly Photography, Valentine is a manager at Technique and a devotee of the horror genre — not a scream queen, necessarily, but a champion. She’s also partial to the playback formats that are synonymous with older films. VIRAL VIDEO
“Keeping obsolete/tactile media makes for a much more involved experience, especially for movie and music collectors,” she says. “It’s fun for me when people get excited about movies on VHS, especially ‘tape heads’ who collect, trade, and live/breathe movies on tapes.” This niche was last seen in these parts in brick-and-mortar form ages ago at Oh the Horror on Bird Road in Miami and up in Stuart at Groovy Movies. With “obsolete” media such as cassettes and Polaroids joining vinyl in a revival, a movie nook inside a record shop makes sense. Beyond her connoisseurship of genre and medium, Valentine the artist also sees the particular beauty of analog cinema and the need to maintain its tangible connection to the masses — especially in the context of the DIY, low budget know-how that she has adopted. “My vision is to continue to grow within Technique and I’d like to have monthly events,” she says. “Ultimately, it would be a dream to have a small video store set-up, hidden behind red velvet curtains, and nestled among tons of movies, posters and memorabilia.” Viral Video opens with a launch party on October 27 at Technique Records in Miami. techniquerecords.com ~ Abel Folgar
