B.e. Easy Jams The Bubble Anybody who frequented (or even accidentally visited) the jam scene within the past five years or so, in virtually any area of the country, likely crossed paths with South Florida’s own Ben Evans; smiling character, familiar to numerous satellite communities orbiting around the enchantment of live music and adventure. Last year, Ben, like so many others, was lost far too young to the dark side of that enchantment. Rather than sullenly mourn, friends and family are instead gathering to celebrate Ben’s spirit by organizing a music & arts festival in his honor. Set for July 28 at IWAN venue “The Bubble” in Fort Lauderdale, The B.e. Easy Music & Arts Festival will benefit a scholarship fund founded by the Evans family to provide help for those struggling with addiction. The all-day extravaganza will feature an arts & crafts marketplace, art exhibitions, food trucks, interactive art installations, raffles, open vending, and live performances on two stages from over a dozen acts, including local and regional staples such as Crazy Fingers, The Funky Nuggets, Cope, Aquaphonics, Ancient Sun, and Lucky Costello, among many others. It all starts at noon and goes until midnight, with a free late-night after party at the Poorhouse in Downtown Fort Lauderdale for those who pace themselves properly. Tickets are on sale now for $15 and will be $20 at the door. All proceeds from this event will go to the B.e. Easy Scholarship Fund. After spending 15 years as an artist manager and booking agent, Brian Kurtz grew frustrated with labels’ lack of communication and nourishment towards bands. Exacerbated by labels’ time constraints and the added pressure of demanding instant sales on artists, Kurtz set out to start a label on his own terms in 2011. “Certain bands and albums take longer to sprout, so worrying about first week/ month numbers is no way to run an indie label,” said Kurtz who began his label, Limited Fanfare, as an artistfriendly solution to the traditional record label way of doing things. Based out of Miami, Florida, Limited Fanfare has already released records by The Ettes (Teeth,) MonstrO (Anchors Up!,) and Lil Daggers (eponymous release,). The records are all available on vinyl at www.Limitedfanfare.com. On deck this year, Limited Fanfare has releases scheduled to drop from PAPER (project by Mike Marsh of Dashboard Confessional fame), Zebra Tracks, Sunday Driver, North&South, Stallone and an Astronautalis and Rickolus split 7”. Kurtz points out that Sub Pop, Matador and Merge didn’t grow up overnight and neither will Limited Fanfare. “I put out records because I love the music and the bands that I work with and treat each project with as much care -- as if it were my own.” Find tracks by Paper and Zebra Tracks on this months PureHoney Compilation! Antiwarpt Music Festival III Looking for a good excuse to split town for the weekend; perhaps a manageable road trip to clear your head for a bit? Well then, you should be considering the third annual Antiwarpt Music Festival in Saint Petersburg, Florida. It’s certainly a viable option considering f e s t i v a l organizer Sean O’Brien has 99 bands lined up in 10 different venues for your audible p l e a s u r e . Scheduled for July 28, the Antiwarpt Festival was created by O’Brien and his partners at Tampa Bay Area booking and promotions company Brokenmold Entertainment as an alternative to the tween punk cookie-cutter ways of the Vans Warped Tour. As the name suggest, “Antiwarpt” formed as local reaction to the commercialized method of that tour, O’Brien and crew aligning several local bands on the same date as the skater company Hot Topic-loving festival as a platform to showcase top notch Floridian bands. “Because of our name, we can’t escape it, but we are slowly becoming our own identity,” said the booking ace. Antiwarpt has certainly taken on a life of its own indeed, during its first year it brought 25 bands to perform in four venues; the second year had 74 bands in eight venues. Year three now has 99 bands on tap and lo and behold a seriously titillating national band in eccentric lo fi Claremont, California outfit, Mountain Goats. South Florida represents with Deaf Poets, Jacuzzi Boys, The Dewars, Honey Train and Beach Day. In addition, it’s just $25 bucks at the door. That’s like 25 cents per band, what a steal. Six Antiwarpt bands: The Woolly Bushmen, Wet Nurse, Poetry ‘n Lotion, Day Joy, Tallhart and Alias Punch are on this months free PureHoney Compilation. Get a listen then hit the show! By Alex Rendon

Crocodiles: Poised To Kill Post-punk, psychedelic rock star band Crocodiles just released their third full-length album Endless Flowers. After spending serious time in the recording studio they are now relishing in the summer sun with nothing but open roads ahead. Since forming Crocodiles in 2008, the core duo of Welchez and Rowell progressed into today’s five-piece band with keyboardist Robin Eisenberg, bassist Marco Gonzalez, and drummer Anna Schulte. Last summer, shortly after the band paid us a visit, they headed overseas to Berlin and began to rehearse and record Endless Flowers. “Overall, I think the feeling of it definitely came from living in Berlin. People ask us to articulate that, but it’s difficult.” In a recent interview for Paste Magazine, Rowell explains that although Welchez and him had written most of the album last winter, their time in Berlin made the album evolve and become what it is. “I think if we recorded the album in New York the album would sound different. We were using all this German equipment. We wrote a couple of songs in Berlin, and they came out the way they did because we were there.” The self-produced album Endless Flowers was released in Europe on Souterrain Transmissions and in the US on French Kiss. “The album’s still gritty and punk, but it’s also really big and loud and psychedelic. It’s just a lot more organic.” Last May the band delivered one of the most memorable performances we have ever seen. Needless to say, we were left wanting more and have been anticipating their return ever since. July 19 & 20, the road brings Crocodiles back to WPB and Miami for much anticipated encore performances at Respectable Street and Vagabond. Hear Crocodiles on this months PureHoney Compilation!
