RSC: 25 Years of Oblivion Respectable Street celebrates “25 Years of Oblivion” on August 25 with its annual block party. The mainstay indie rock venue’s anniversary party will feature 25 bands on four stages, an open bar for one hour (8-9pm) as well as a midnight cannon blast that will distribute colored ping pong balls redeemable for prizes (such as drink tabs) to partygoers. It’s not the prizes that will draw the event’s usual hordes to Clematis Street. It’s the oblivion and the music. Horror punk legends The Misfits will lead this year’s line-up of standout local bands. The Band in Heaven will blast its psychedelic shoegaze, femalefronted Darling Sweets will bring the folk punk, and Retrocities will deliver a nostalgic drone of postpunk. Other wellknown local outfits, such as Lavola, Leading the Heroes, Symbols and The Hard Richards will represent the gamut of indie rock subgenres on the event’s four stages. Between the stages, amid the noise and among the throngs of patrons is the other part of the oblivion: the crowd. From the mid-40s set who’ve been patronizing the club since the early days to the newly-legal indiephiles who flaunt at Flaunt, Respectable Street is home to locals who dance to and celebrate original, independent rock music. The landmark 25th anniversary seems an appropriate moment for reflection, but what’s to ponder when the club’s culture has been fairly steady from conception? “It hasn’t changed as much as most people think,” says Respectable Street owner Rodney Mayo. “The music is indie rock. The crowd is still a mix of older people and younger kids. If you’d asked me during the grunge years, you probably would have gotten a different answer. There’s no more moshing or slam dancing. Over the last couple of years, it’s closer to the music that we played when it first opened.“ While you’re partying, take a few moments to notice Respectable Street’s new look. The club will be closed for one week prior to the party to hang this year’s installation of fresh art by local artists. Respectable Street’s 25th Anniversary Block Party starts at 8pm on Saturday, August 25. Bands include: THE MISFITS, ORDINARY BOYS, RIBBON DANCER, THE WRONG, BAND IN HEAVEN, SYMBOLS, DARLING SWEETS, LEADING THE HEROES, FEROCIOUS STONES, OLD HABIT, SWEET CHARIOTS, LUNA REX, THE HARD RICHARDS, RAGGY MONSTER, IN BOXES, FALL OF OLYMPUS, THE RIOT ACT, LAVOLA, HOWLING WINDS, RETROCITIES! ~ Courtney Hambright
HIT & AHOL
RUN Exhibit by SNIFFS GLUE Earlier this year our dear friend and beloved local artist, Ahol Sniffs Glue, showcased a series of works dedicated to the working class hero in his exhibit, Ahol: Full Time. Ahols upcoming exhibition, Hit & Run (named after a recent traffic accident from which he is still recovering) continues to explore the everyday struggles of the middle class. How long have you been working on this exhibit? This has been an ongoing body of work I have been creating for quite sometime. Some are newer than others but all never seen before. What is the concept behind the artwork you will showcase? The idea behind this show is that anything goes. I am always working and creating and so this show was bound to happen. I couldn’t be more thankful than to have the opportunity to show it in Greggs Gallery. How many pieces will you be exhibiting? A bunch. The place is huge!
What different media/mediums will you be incorporating? Paintings, drawings, mixed media, sculpture and a lot of surprises. What message are you trying to convey through this work? Creating is full-time. The mind never stops. Forward is the only way regardless of the speed bumps life puts in your tracks. Opening Reception Thursday, August 9, 7-11pm at Gregg Shienbaum Gallery in Wynwood. After-Party hosted by (((Shake))) Thursdays at The Vagabond in Downtown Miami from 10pm-5am. by Stef Vidal for TROPICULT For full interview and photo gallery visit http://tropicult.com

Adam Sheetz Ain’t Pretty 23 short years of life has equated to 23 long years of observing a generation chock full of instant gratification, possessing a depth no greater than face value. Excess has become t h e yardstick by which our success is measured, w h i l e humility remains the feeble antiquity of generations p a s t . Having said this, I can now better explain my work and myself. Nothing is pretty. Pretty is pointless, pretty is fake, pretty is a distraction; therefore, pretty will never make its way into my work, for it is a waste of both time and ink. My work is intended to reveal all that is hidden beneath the surface, to shred through the wool that’s been stretched across our eyes and force some glimpse of ugly truth into the consciousness of those that can spare a precious moment. Look closely, no matter who you are you will find yourself in my work – if this makes you uncomfortable, good. Comfort is the last thing one should find amidst a splattered work of crude lines spilled from a cynical heart. If you are offended by my work, there is probably a reason – you’ve been coddled far too long; no one has made you see things as they are. My work is intended to be the Benzos pumped down your throat to rip you out of whatever trip has you thinking that your world is perfect and pretty. The world in which we live seems to be nestled somewhere uncomfortably at the crossroads of whimsy and terror, and that is where you will find me, pen in hand, and ink in my veins.
PureHoney
Turns
One
Rarely have I skimmed a letter from the publisher that I actually enjoyed reading. They always seemed, for the most part, bloated and overly pompous. With PureHoney, I purposely avoided this until now and simply allowed the content to speak for itself. One year ago I was relatively jobless. After returning from tour with The Dewars, Surfer Blood and The Drums I had a very difficult time getting back to the reality of being back in South Florida. I was bouncing around with a few odd shows at different venues: Little Munich, Propaganda, Dada, Speakeasy, Respectable Street, and working with Longboards when they first opened, when I suddenly decided to launch a print publication. Crazy right? Who reads papers anymore? Far too many to thank individually, I am extremely grateful to everyone who has participated in this weird little experiment. I totally appreciate everyone who has contributed stories, songs, art, time, press, advertisements etc. That said, having a full time job, it’s often been a struggle. Every now and then I’ve asked myself “Should I keep doing this? Should I focus on some other personal hobby?” Each month, without fail, I’ve been greatly encouraged time and time again by the overwhelming response PureHoney receives. People seem to genuinely appreciate the simplicity of having a physical monthly to pick up to find out what’s happening. Many others, of course, turn immediately to the centerfold see what that months poster looks like. Since last August, the monthly music compilations have had over 22,000 plays and 5000+ downloads. At the end of the day, this was the primary goal... to get more people to see and hear cool under-the-radar stuff. Awesome! PureHoney still needs your support and is searching for an experienced advertising salesperson. Someone who can pull in local businesses, national sponsors and festivals. We’d love to continue publishing but breaking even is only fun for so long. We would also love to go full color and increase our distribution in the coming months. To accomplish this, we need your help! Please encourage local businesses to sponsor us. Or... if you personally have deep, deep pockets and want to truly support the underground arts community… we welcome your gift. Perhaps someone out there would like to help launch a kickstarter campaign. Your thoughts and ideas are welcome. Thanks again! ~steev Sketch by Paul Simundich
