M83... Out of This World The Antibes-born M83— initially comprised of Anthony Gonzalez and Nicolas Fromageau— took their name from the spiral galaxy, Messier 83. Located in the Hydra constellation, it is an extremely close and brightly-lit galaxy, and, with binoculars, completely visible from Earth. It may seem trite and overwrought to compare M83’s sound to the galaxy from which it took its name. But it’s fair as M83’s sound is shiny and celestial and farreaching in scope, yet still close and accessible enough to connect with. They’ve been featured in countless television programs and films; their videos are almost always breezy, aesthetically pleasing short films about the aches and pains and beauties of youth. It’s shoegaze-inflected electro more ambient than the imaginary sounds of outer space, and for the past decade, have provided the soundtrack to every emotion imaginable. The word “epic” has unfortunately wriggled its way into frat-vernacular, but it’s the best way to describe M83’s latest release, the double-disced Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming, their most effortful—and seemingly effortless— album yet. Indeed, Anthony Gonzalez referred to it as such in a June 2011 interview with Spin). It’s the album they’re currently promoting via tour, but it’ll be incredible to hear anything from their discography. Their first return to Miami since Ultra is on September 26 at The Fillmore, and we’re amazed tickets have not sold out yet. By Monica Uszerowicz of SaltyEggs.com Image by Annouck Bertin

Remembering Dan Hosker

12/9/65 - 8/11/12 I first met Dan Hosker in the early part of 1984. He had put a listing in Rag Magazine looking for musicians. I don’t remember the ad exactly, but I’m pretty sure it mentioned Husker Du and something about “horns”. When we met up at a record store in Miramar, we were both wearing the same thing: jeans and a tan army shirt with the sleeves ripped off. It was awkward. Our first performance together was in April of ’84 at Open Books & Records. It was a Velvet Underground tribute and we played “Sunday Morning” on acoustics. We were not horrible.

After a five year stint in Massachusetts in a band called Inside Outburst, Dan and I eventually settled back in South Florida in 1990 and formed our band The Holy Terrors. Again - not horrible. Throughout the years Dan’s musical inquisitiveness would find him playing in too many bands/projects to mention. OK, I’ll try: Harry Pussy, The Bikes, Boise Bob & His Backyard Band, The Hivebuzzers, Doersam, Aquafly, Nacht, The Girls Named Lourdes, Wolfboy & The Fantods, Laundry Room Squelchers, Charlie Pickett, Mr Entertainment…and more! Anyone who knew Dan even a little bit would tell you that as good a musician as he was, he was an even better person. He had this cool-yet-quietly humble way about him. He was that rare intellectual music-guy that wasn’t also a dick. I played my last show with Dan on May 12th, 2012 at Churchill’s. A week later he was hit by a car on I95 coming home from another gig. For 84 days he struggled to survive, but his injuries were too great and on August 11th he drew his last breath. Dan was my best friend in the world, and as sad as I feel for myself, I feel sadder for those who never got to stand in his light. Quiet River, Rolling Onward Paul Simundich is a musician and illustrator based out of Brooklyn, New York. Originally from South Florida, he moved up to the city to play in a band called “Goolsby.” They played some great venues in both Manhattan and Brooklyn and started to gain some momentum after recording their second e.p. “Ghost Kids.” Due to turmoil in the band however, the group dissolved in less than a year. Paul remains in the city working at an architectural consulting firm and pursues music and art in his leisure. His favorite artists are Mike Mignola (creator of Hellboy 1 and B.P.R.D.) and Theo Ellsworth (Capacity). He dreams of one day writing and self-publishing his own comic. Currently his favorite Canadian indie rock band is the Constantines but the Weakerthans are a close second. Paul is in the middle of recording an album for his new band “Cowl” which should be finished by the end of October. The album is about his grandfather and his attempt to live up to his honor. The track “Bernard” on this months free compiliation was written for him. Paul is looking to return to school next Fall to pursue a career in graphic design. If you have any interest in reaching out to him, here is where he can be found… Email: Paulsimundich@gmail.com Website: cowl.tumblr.com http://cargocollective.com/paulsimundich

Built to Spill, Broken Chairs How does one encompass the awesomeness that is Built to Spill in 200 words? It just can’t be done. Brief bio: Formed in 1992, greatest thing to ever come out of Idaho up to and including potatoes, released three nigh-perfect albums in the 1990s (There’s Nothing Wrong With Love, Perfect From Now On, and Keep It Like a Secret) and three more great albums in the 2000s (Ancient Melodies of the Future, You in Reverse, and There Is No Enemy). Led by guitarist/antihero Doug Martsch, Built to Spill provided the epitome of guitar-heavy indie rock in the 1990s, along with Dinosaur Jr., Pavement, and a handful of others. The band plays a great variety of covers in its live shows, and its ability to absolutely destroy some of the greatest guitar gods of the past 40 years offers testament to the band’s greatness. You know a guitarist is a badass when he can outshitkick Lynyrd Skynyrd at one show, out-mope The Cure at the next, and top it off by out-noodling the Grateful Dead at the next. The group’s latest record, 2009’s There Is no Enemy, continued in much the same vein as 2006’s You in Reverse – and indeed, included the elements of literate songwriting coupled with blazing musicianship that has been the group’s successful formula since its inception. If you haven’t seen the band before, you must – and if you have, then you know you’re gonna be there again. Built to Spill play with Helvetia and Sister Crayon (both on this months free comp) Tuesday, Sept. 11, at the Culture Room. By Dan Sweeney of SaltyEggs.com Image by Graham MacRae
