CARRABBA,OUTSIDE TO FIND IT You’re forgiven if Fort Lauderdale’s Bienes Center for the Arts is a cultural venue that hasn’t been on your radar. A space that has heretofore hosted the likes of children’s theater, classical music, and oldies acts, the intimate theater on the St. Thomas Aquinas High School campus will open its doors to more than 300 screaming fans of Dashboard Confessional’s Chris Carrabba for a Jan. 11 solo show that sold out immediately. “I’d been looking for a place to do a really small local show, and it seemed like a fun idea,” says Carrabba. Tiny hometown shows have a special place in Carrabba’s heart, particularly after opening stadiums for the likes of Bon Jovi. He sees his last-minute appearance at Propaganda in 2009 as a “warm-up” for the Beines Center show. “That place was on fire. People went bananas. I find that in South Florida specifically, the fans here enjoy a smaller show. It seems to be the general vibe.” As is customary with Carrabba’s solo shows, he’ll be playing without a set list and is open to requests – guaranteeing that if it’s a song he’s played in the past two years, he’ll give it a shot. You also may hear some new material to be released in the spring in what looks to be a prolific 2013 for Carrabba. He’s written about 20 new songs and isn’t sure if they’ll be Dashboard tunes, Further Seems Forever songs, or “something different.” He’s also excited about finally booking a hometown Further Seems Forever show – the band’s reunion tour with Carrabba was cut short by Hurricane Sandy – and producing music for other artists. If you’re more athletically inclined, you may catch him at the IMG Miami Marathon on Jan. 27. “When you work in music, you end up inside a club all day long, or in a studio, which is like a cave, all day long,” he says. “So I like a lot of outdoor stuff. Living down here is so inspirational, but you have to be outside to find it.” ~ John Thomason
ARTHEART DOUBLE DOSE Since 2009, philanthropic artist network ArtHeart has been hustling like raindrops to raise money for charities like Miami orphanages, World Vision, and Tsunami relief. ArtHeart’s brainchild, 36-year-old Katya Neptune, began the charitable organization as a vessel to promote promising- yet-underserved artists while simultaneously raising money for select charities. The inaugural ArtHeart event in 2009 was entitled Artist for Africa and featured an assortment of national and South Floridian burgeoning creative talent. For 2013, Neptune has her eyes set on Rwanda, Africa. Neptune was overwrought with grief over the genocide that occurred in Rwanda years prior. She tells us that she was too busy living it up back in 1994 to notice the atrocities when they actually occurred. With an overbearing sense of guilt and a heavy heart, Neptune discovered ZOE Ministry--a relief ministry that empowers Rwanda’s children orphaned by HIV/AIDs, war, disease, famine and other catastrophes. Going beyond the standard outreach ministry, ZOE’s Orphan Empowerment Program provides Rwanda’s youth shelter, life skills, health and disease prevention, and education. Neptune has seen the impact ZOE Ministry has had on the children, traveling to Rwanda last year and witnessing the magic herself. “It was amazing watching these kids graduate from the program, moving from dependency to complete self-sufficiency.” Neptune, a musician and aspiring artists herself (peep her work at www. katyaneptune.com,) aims to raise $18,000 for the ZOE Ministry this year. To reach this lofty goal, ArtHeart has constructed a double-decker dose of charitable goodness on January 26 at 12:30 pm with a skate competition at Fort Lauderdale indoor skate park Ramp 48 (darkside grinds and heel flips commence at 2pm, admission is $5. ) Once the sick ollies are spent, the crowd will flow over to Green Room for nighttime revelry. Admission is just $5 here as well. A stellar collection of art brut delights await, featuring Rwandan artist Bashimbe Bantuzeko Bezo, and works by pro-skater and artists Steve Caballero, Nathalie Alfonso, Blair Hess, Detourbutterfly, Emilee Rose McGovern (art above) and many more. JENSEN SERF COMPANY Once upon a time I pressed play on Jensen Serf Company’s, “Johnny Panic,”... I haven’t been able to listen to anything else since. Teenage longing within the Sunshine State is encapsulated in the lyrics, “I miss you, I miss you/Hangin’ out around the pool/Back when our lives were cool.” Their half-croon, half-wail vocals mix with dirty guitar instrumentals which evoke beach visions, the salt, and the “serf.” I’m convinced their rolling, lo-fi garage sound could entrance even the palest hermit into seeking sun. Their five song joint was released by Sturdy Girls Records in March of this year and the band is generously offering free digital downloads at www.jensenserfco.bandcamp.com Jensen Serf Company play Thursday, Jan 3rd @ Churchills w/ Girls on the Beach, Beach Day, The Gun Hoes. ~ Bridget Kant
LARS FINBERG IS A GENIUS Lars Finberg is a genius. So says The Stranger, Seattle’s best alt-paper, who honored the prolific postpunk musician with their coveted “Genius Award” in 2011. Finberg is the creative force behind his band, the Intelligence, and through their thirteen years of revolving door membership has written, recorded, and released seven singles, five split singles, two EPs, and seven albums. His songs range from lo-fi two-minute rage blowouts to Devorobot pop to tart/sweet almostlove songs, evolving from muddy bedroom cassette recordings to the clean, crunchy production of 2012’s “Everybody’s Got It Easy But Me” (In The Red). With desert-dry humor and incisive takes on everything from fellow bands (“F*ck Eat Skull”), to doomed birds (“La Brea Tar Pits”) to crumbling romance (“Fidelity”), Finberg’s smarts and clever musical hooks provide a sonic haven for garage/psych/punk fans. The guy is in demand, too, recently taking a year off from the Intelligence to act as extra kit-basher and guitar shredder on worldwide tours with Thee Oh Sees, and also dates with L.A.-based band Wounded Lion. Finberg is making a rare solo run to SoFla to participate in two special events, giving you definite plans for the first weekend of 2013. On Friday, January 4, Finberg will perform along with local bands Cop City/Chill Pillars and Black Seal at Dada (52 N. Swinton Ave, Delray Beach, 10PM-2AM, 561-330-3232; free) for “Kismet Vintage Presents: A Night Of Velvet Underground Covers.” The VU-themed party will also feature vintage wear from Kismet’s store with 25% of the proceeds benefitting Arts Garage. Saturday, January 5, will find Finberg, Cop City, and New Coke in the Wynwood Art District’s new retro-cool Gramps Bar (176 NW 24th St., Miami, 9PM3AM, 786-752-6693; $5). Finberg’s doing double-duty as DJ that night, which pretty much guarantees you are in for one helluva cool mix. ~ Marianne Spellman (photo too:)
