MY BLOODY VALENTINE We all can’t be fortunate enough to be proposed to on Valentine’s Day like Amanda Linton, co-owner of Ink & Pistons Tattoo Shop and Slushbox Art Gallery, but we can mend our broken hearts with a peek into the souls of more than thirty artists’ relationships with love. While the shop has only been open since last July, the My Bloody Valentine: an Art Show about The Sweet and Sour Side of Love will already be their sixth event. Ink & Pistons provides a venue for local rising artists to begin... and expand their collections. Seeing the artists personal growth within the shop’s gallery has been the most rewarding and exciting part of the events for Linton. She has been producing art and craft events for over seven years which might be one reason for the shops growing popularity. She modestly jokes that “some may be there for the beer” but attendees can expect a packed house of viewers and buyers. Displayed on February 23 will be art featuring the sweeter, softer side of being in love complemented by the darker, heartbreaking aspects of love lost and unrequited. No matter whether you prefer photography, watercolor, ink, or acrylic, you’re guaranteed to find something there to win your affections. Valentine’s Day treats and drinks will also be served. All pieces will be available for purchase during the show, with prices ranging from $50-$300, and will remain on display thru April 2. If you simply can’t wait, there is a whole store full of affordable prints and products from various South Florida artists. The unofficial list of scheduled artists includes: William Butler, Caron Bowman, SID GRAVES, Colleen Newcomb, Eduardo Servigna, Heather Pioro, Melissa Goldman, Alexis Colbert, Stefanie Polly, Janet Hinkle, Dave Berns, Carolina Lebar, Molly Grabill, Jenny Lee, Allison Kotzig, Tim Palmer and Erika Taguchi-Newton. Attend My Bloody Valentine on Saturday, February 23 from 7pm-11pm – Free! 2716 S Dixie Hwy, West Palm Beach, FL www.InkandPistons.com ~ Amanda Vasile
MAGNALIA CHRISTI With a band name like Christ, Lord, you would think the Atlanta orchestral troupe of said name is a serious cast of evangelic born-again Christian players. According to the sextet’s charismatic drummer, Billy Mitchell, however, the group is not religiously inclined. “We are not Christian nor proSatan either, our name is just a play off our lead singer’s (Christian Ballew,) first name,” explained Mitchell. He does admit that the moniker may have helped them book gigs initially, “people seemed to be intrigued by [the name,] and are always curious to hear what our music sounds like.” Christ, Lord’s musical output is far from a church choir but its gentle violin strings and breezy cello strokes do evoke a certain weightless and heavenly air. The ensemble’s first album, Magnalia Christi (Latin for The Glorious Works of Christ [in America], also the title for the 18th-century work of author Cotton Mather,) pulls from Eastern European and vaudeville influences. Its use of upright bass, string instruments, trumpet and clarinet and in particular, Ballew’s dolorous vocal quality, will have discerning listeners drawing comparisons to Zach Condon’s whimsical gypsy musicinspired project Beirut. “Beirut is definitely an influence,” admits Ballaw, adding however, “Christian’s voice just kind of sounds like, he can’t help it.” He says that band always takes Beirut comparisons as a compliment, but point out, “we’re moving away from that and striking out into much more original territory.” Mitchell says the group is just a month away from completing its second album. He describes the sound as a mix between New Orleans street pop and Eastern European freak out. “We try to draw from classical and modern influences, and create an ‘old contemporary’ type of sound.” The group is eager to be touring through South Florida. “The weather feels stickier in Florida, but that’s ok because people seem to feel more comfortable with letting their freak flag show down there.” Christ, Lord plays somewhere in WPB on 2/19 and Sweat Records on 2/20 www.facebook.com/christcommalord ~ Alex Rendon

EMILY KEMPF, IRON JAYNE Those lucky enough to witness the theatrical freak-out folk dished out by spastic Atlanta troupe Back Pockets will tell you their live performance was a spectacle like no other. Featuring upwards of 14 people on stage, with elaborate costumes and set designs, and propelled by a banjo, keyboard, guitar, bass, harmonium, trombone, violin, and drums cacophony, Back Pockets were part demented performance art and part experimental folk. The paroxysmal ensemble broke up last summer however, but the group’s talented lead vocalist Emily Kempf, is not hanging up her musical aspirations just yet. PureHoney was lucky to track down the 28-year-old firecracker at the Atlanta, Georgia home she shares with three members of orchestral folk group Christ, Lord. Kempf had just wrapped up band practice with one of her new outfits, Iron Jayne. PH: So how did band practice go?
Kempf: We worked on
just one song for two hours, it is a new song called “Crush and Kill.” No one has heard it. We played a variation of it at a show, which just consisted of me losing my vocals over a kraut rock tempo. Tonight we made it into a real song. PH: Are the Back Pockets really kaput? Kempf: Yes, broken up forever, dead. As the queen bee of the group, I can tell you I don’t want it to happen again. PH: What happened? You seemed to have a really nice following. Kempf: I think we were such a hit because our shows were so theatrical and in your face. We played every show like it was our last show. However, all 15 of us, lived on the tour bus together and at the end we outgrew each other. PH: How does Iron Jayne compare to Back Pockets? Kempf: No theatre people; it is not the same type of crazy. In Iron Jayne we create chaos and harness it. In Back Pockets, it was always there. It is a smaller group, so you can hear what I’m singing about. The melodies and writing take center stage. I’m definitely doing things differently than with Back Pockets. PH: What kind of differences? Kempf: I hired a publicist, shopping a label and thinking about using a booking manager. In the Back Pockets, I did everything. I learned that I don’t like being stressed out. I want to have fun now. I can die at any second. PH: Nice work on the tour posters for Christ, Lord. You also drew a great deal of the Back Pocket’ album art. Is art just a hobby or do you work it professionally? Kempf: I have been drawing since I was four. I did the Back Pockets’ flyers and CD cases. I don’t make money in art though... I probably could if I focused on it. PH: Tell us a bit about your creative process. Kempf: I’m writing songs all the time, and carry a notebook around so I can be writing lyrics. Art just happens to me; it is not something I think about it. I don’t know how else to be. PH: How about performing? Kempf: I love performing because it is the only environments where I can be my hyperactive self and it’s actually accepted and encouraged by the audience. PH: What does the future hold for Iron Jayne? Kempf: We have a short tour of Florida planned the first week of March. We are in the studio right now until February. We hope to put out the EP in the spring and shop the rest of it to a label. PH: What’s happening with your other band Perfect High Fives Every Time, where you share the stage with Christ, Lord’s drummer Billy Mitchell? Kempf: None of us takes the band seriously. Literally, the only motive is to have fun. We have a blast performing and improve well together. We have heard from people who have seen our show, they describe it as, ‘being a part of an inside joke.’ Although Kempf insists there is no chance for a Back Pockets reunion, fans will take comfort in knowing that there is a film in the works about the band’s last tour. Kempf has no plans to revisit that project because she is “fulfilled musically in the three other groups she is in right now.” Yeah she has yet another group; one she has never spoken publicly about called Heavy Dreams. It is a girl group in the “Jell-O stages,” as Kempf describes it, with “crazy harmonies and lots of instrumentalstyle vocals in the vein of the Dirty Projectors.” Kempf is a busy bee indeed, with the kind of dynamic energy to pull off fronting three brilliant bands, this woman is definitely going places. www.facebook.com/IronJayneATL ~ Alex Rendon
DETOURBUTTERFLY With 23 exhibits in 2012 alone, Boca Ratonbased artist Nikki “Detourbutterfly” Saraiva maintains a busy schedule with the multigenre art career she’s been fostering since leaving the fashion industry in 2010. The former wardrobe stylist and boutique owner now artist has participated in such local exhibits as South Florida’s Red Eye, ArtServe’s Trash 2 Art Exhibit and F.A.T. Village’s Annual Day of the Dead Art Show last year, and earned accolades for her work at a handful of shows. In 2012, she received the Judges Recognition Award at the Spring Open-Theme Exhibit at Broward Art Guild, first place at the Trash 2 Art Exhibit and a Best in Show Award at the Controversy exhibit by Broward Art Guild. Saraiva is taking her art career to another level in 2013. On January 18, she presented her first solo exhibition at The Beat Cup in Delray Beach, the venue where she debuted a couple of her pieces in 2010. That show featured over 50 pieces, mostly assemblage works, scenes and sculptures that she creates by connecting found objects with hardware. “It’s exciting to have a solo show. To go from having a couple of pieces there a couple of years ago to have a solo show there. Now, it’s come full circle... It feels good and it feels only right to have it there” Her second solo exhibition will be on Valentines Day at Coastars Coffee Bar in Lake Worth. Saraiva has only been in the local art scene for a couple of years, but those who witnessed her exhibit at F.A.T. Village’s Annual Day of the Dead Art Show know she is well-prepared to present on her own. Massive in scale, meticulous in detail, the wall-sized assemblage piece consisted of a combination of paintings and delicate sculptures made of bones, doll heads and old-fashioned keys, arranged as an altar befitting the event’s theme. Nikki “Detourbutterfly” Saraiva plunged into her artistic endeavors in response to a turn of events that might have overwhelmed or defeated others. She simply says, “I had a lot of changes in my life in 2010. I decided I have nothing else to do right now, so I put a lot of my struggles and energy into my art.” Things started going her way. “I was financially in a bind as a single mom with three boys.. desperately needing work but not wanting to put my son in daycare. Space of Mind [a Delray Beach school] contacted me and asked me to come in for a lunch and hired me as a part-time coach. It was like it was sent to me out of the blue at such a tough time.” Through her work at Space of Mind, Saraiva picked up another art-related part-time job at Art House of Delray and continues to work around the clock to create and present her assemblage pieces. Experience her solo exhibition on February 14 at Coastars Coffee Bar in Lake Worth. www.detourbutterfly.com ~ Courtney Hambright
