OUTER SPACE WAVES The Rhythm Foundation and Heineken present the 11th Heineken TransAtlantic Music Festival - a celebration of modern world music at the oceanfront North Beach Bombshell on April 5/6. This Festival is international showcase that features electro-tango group Bajofondo, Zuzuka Poderosa, Kush Aror, and Colombia’s Bomba Estereo. Miami’s own local favorites - Psychic Mirrors, Krisp, and The Hongs, will be setting the tone and giving them warm welcome. PSYCHIC MIRRORS Thursday, April 4, 9pm Kick-Off Party at Blackbird Ordinary The neo-funk boogie band, Psychic Mirrors, will kick-off the festivities with a concert in the beautiful outdoor backyard of Brickell’s Blackbird Ordinary. This fiesta is FREE - GRATIS (!!!) and will welcome one and all (21 years old and over) to hop on to Psychic Mirror’s outer space waves (don’t forget the cosmic chronic). BAJOFONDO + THE HONGS Friday, April 5, 7pm at North Beach Bandshell +After-Party at Sandbar Lounge The first official evening of the Heineken TransAtlantic Music Festival at the official North Beach Bandshell location opens with a special live performance by local trio - The Hongs. The Hongs’ sound brings out electro’s dark and twisty vibe with a touch of (new) wave and taste of sweet sugary pop. Keep your eyes on these guys Miami, they seem to be taking the local music scene by storm! Then, cue electro-tango legends - Bajofondo, delivering another energetic live performance at this years fest. This collective brings together talented young musicians and artists from both sides of the Rio de la Plata (Buenos Aires, Arg. and Montevideo, Urg.) to create a unique blend of classic tango with electronic audio and visual elements. BOMBA ESTEREO + KRISP Saturday, April 6, 7pm at North Beach Bandshell +After-Party at Sandbar Lounge Saturday’s opening set for the second day of the festival will be dropped by Miami’s favorite electro-indie-dance group, Krisp. Then, Bogota-based group Bomba Estereo, also returns to the bandshell with the raw sound of classic Colombian rhythms like cumbia and champeta colliding with club sounds - techno, hip hop, dub. The evening will also feature a performance by Zuzuka Poderosa and Kush Arora, Carioca Bass artists bringing a groovy baile-funk-dance rhythm north from Brazil. BEAT MACHINES Sunday, April 7 Closing Party at Gramps Bar “All good things must come to an end...” For the closing ceremony, Beat Machines is bringing a myriad of musical components - electro, hiphop, latin flavor, to Gramps Bar in Wynwood. Expect nothing short of an incredibly fun and entertaining farewell concert. Tickets & More Information at http://TransAtlanticFestival. com. BLOCK x BLOG DOES FTL No one could accuse Phillip Roffman, the hyper-energetic head of South Florida promotion arm Subculture, of thinking small. Since the twentysomething formed his company last year, he’s already helmed a handful of successful themed events in Fort Lauderdale that crossed the borders of the city’s underground culture. An event dubbed Sincerely Yours, Marty McFly invited area bands an artists to gorge on a heap of nostalgic retro-futurism, while the party By Way of Wes Anderson took things in a twee direction.

solidify its emerging identity.

Now, though, Roffman and Subculture, along with 3J Hospitality, are launching their most ambitious project to date: Block x Blog. A daylong shebang scheduled for Saturday, April 20, the festival will take over three venues simultaneously -Green Room, Revolution, and America’s Backyard -while presenting more than 40 artists. The goal, Roffman says, is to shine a light on Fort Lauderdale’s creative community and attempt to

“There are people who are awesome and who are communicating such great things within our environment in South Florida,” he says. “I wanted to create a festival that was for them, to really show what they’re doing within their community.” That m.o. is apparent just from Subculture’s high-concept approach to naming the festival. The “block” in question is, of course, the chunk of the downtown Fort Lauderdale core that houses the festival’s three venues. The “blog” part of it, meanwhile, refers to many of the event’s sponsors -- publications and sites like New Times Broward-Palm Beach, South Florida Music Obsessed, Salty Eggs, and, of course, PureHoney. But the thinking goes beyond that, says Roffman. “The name of it came about in the sense of a pixel. If you look at just one pixel, it’s a pixel, and that’s it,” he says. “But if you look at multiple pixels together and they all have their own associated job or color, you start to build a picture. The festival itself was built pixel by pixel, the greatest people from the community.” In practical terms for the area music fan, this means a six-hour buffet of South Florida’s artistic riches. Starting at 10pm, each venue within the event presents a distinct lineup of both visual and music artists from across genres. Many of those, naturally, represent Broward, from chillwave favorite Millionyoung, to triphoppers Astrea Corporation, to left-field MCs like Bleubird and Protoman, to oneman experimental rock phenom Boxwood. Others, however, hail from further south: Jacuzzi Boys, Krisp, Lil Daggers, Plains, AbdeCaf, Afrobeta, and Deaf Poets, to name a few, all come from Miami. But hosting cross-county-line acts in Fort Lauderdale proper -- along with the real booking wild card, Brooklyn dance act Holy Ghost! -- is part of the point, says Roffman. “When we made the lineup, we decided not to be entirely Fort Lauderdale centric so we wanted to have some friends and family come along. The reason why is because we wanted to have a diverse audience as possible,” he says. “When you start mixing those audiences together, they start communicating, and you start blurring that line between Miami and Fort Lauderdale, where it really becomes ‘South Florida’ and we’re all doing something together.” Still, Roffman sees Fort Lauderdale specifically, rather than other locales throughout South Florida, as particularly fertile ground for an event like Block x Blog. “Fort Lauderdale is ten times more accepting. People are ten times more adaptive to change here. There’s just more of an acceptance, of, ‘Okay, what can be done next?’” He says. “I think Fort Lauderdale has an awesome opportunity in the fact that it’s in an embryonic stage where things are really starting to happen.” As evidence of this, Roffman points to Radio-Active Records’ increasing event programming, and Green Room’s renewed curatorial energy as proof, among more recent developments in the scene. And he also feels primed to help unearth more hidden jewels through future Subculture events after Block x Blog. “At the end of the day, some of these artists are really wonderful, but they’re never going to get communicated because they’re not getting out there the right way and don’t necessarily know how,” he says. “The idea of Subculture is to go into areas that don’t have much obvious culture and show people what the fuck is going on.” Block x Blog with Holy Ghost!, Jacuzzi Boys, Afrobeta, AbdeCaf, Millionyoung, and many more. 10pm Saturday, April 20 at Revolution, Green Room, and America’s Backyard, 100 SW 3rd Ave., Fort Lauderdale. Admission is $25 to all venues all night; age 18 and up. Visit subculture.us for full details. ~ Arielle Castillo

SWEATSTOCK MEETS RSD Do you cherish the idea of pacing back and forth between Churchill’s Pub and Sweat Records amidst an all-day block party of tunes, brews, and an overload of, of course, newly-released grooves? Yes, why yes you do. On April 20th, Miami’s own Sweat Records will be hosting its fourth-annual Sweatstock, which happens to coincide with Record Store Day, when vinyl lovers celebrate their affection for shiny acetate via extra special releases. 35+ bands and DJ’s are expected to perform including but certainly not limited to: Otto Von Schirach, Rat Bastard, ANR, Cog Nomen, Jean Jacket, Testokra, Dim Past, Gold Dust Lounge, Beat Machines, Holly Hunt, and This Heart Electric. Speedfreek Presents is curating the Churchill’s Main Stage and Roofless Records have some “super weird awesomeness lined up” for the Patio Stage. If that doesn’t have your engines yet revved, there will also be a number of food trucks and other assorted goodies (like ticket freebies) in store. Sweat Records owner Lolo Reskin kindly answered a few questions for PureHoney about what to expect: Sweat Records has been around for eight years--Sweatstock four. Congrats! What’s the key to longevity in the Miami area? Adaptability, networking, being nice, and having good karma. Recently via Facebook, I noticed an announcement saying that Jack White will be Record Store Days’ ambassador. What’s this entail? Jack White is the national ambassador. He’ll be putting out videos and information to get the general public excited about record stores, vinyl, and Record Store Day. What made you decide to combine Sweatstock and Record Store Day? Our original anniversary was in March but we moved that a while ago to separate it from WMC and Ultra. It makes sense for us to combine RSD and our anniversary – people come early for the RSD exclusives and stay for the live acts through the night. Everything happens in the shop, in the lot next to it, and at Churchill’s. What can we expect from the fourth edition of Sweatstock? Different bands (we rarely repeat year-to-year), fun food trucks, tons of vinyl, and as always – some surprises… How can one get involved and support this years Sweatstock? To support, people can donate via Indiegogo: http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/sweatstock-2013 or RSVP and spread the word on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/425245680890532/ ~Dilara Tuncer

UNOFFICIAL VINYL KING John O’Keefe isn’t just the owner of Top Five Records on J Street, he is the unofficial vinyl king of Palm Beach County. Back in 2009, he opened the highly respected record shop with his own collection of a staggering 50,000 records. It’s no surprise that he first fell in love with vinyl at the ripe age of 11. All it took was hearing some records on the radio that caught his ear; he went out and bought them and the rest is legendary. Even in the 1990s when vinyl was presumed dead and labels weren’t doing pressings, he was a loyal vinyl guy. With such a massive collection, John still has his favorites. He’s partial to the psychedelic era of the 1960s, labeling The 13th Floor Elevators “Psychedelic Sounds” and The Count Five’s “Psychotic Reaction” as favorites. So what is it that sets Top Five Records apart from the others? How has John’s lifelong adoration for vinyl translated to a storefront? In his own words “I have the finest examples of classic rock and roll in the country. Everything is in pristine condition, that’s my whole deal. My records are perfect. They are used, but they are perfect.” He opened with his personal collection, but John is building his stock daily with purchases from other record collectors—but only the finest make it onto the shelves of his primo Lake Worth location. A resident of Lake Worth as well as a business owner, John has seen peaks and valleys in the city’s music and arts scene, but sees it on a real upsurge right now. The shop is sandwiched between the brand new Coastar’s Coffee Bar and Propaganda, there’s a new art gallery across the street, next door to the Bamboo Room. J Street is officially a bustling little spot. Stepping things up a notch was the recent Lake Worth Vinyl Project featuring photos by Dave Earley & Lauren Vocino of participants with their most beloved record. The pictures are now proudly on display at Top Five, much to the liking of John who said “I thought the idea was fantastic and the pictures are now up permanently.” The latest revival of vinyl fans has produced an entire new group of consumers that John wasn’t expecting. He approaches the new age collectors with a bit of a “You kids get off my lawn!” but is constantly surprise by the depth of their rock knowledge. At the same time, John says “I think every teenager got a record player for Christmas last year.” With Record Store Day right around the corner, Top Five Records is looked to by many in the area as a must-stop. “The tradition we have is I feed and drink everybody” said John who is a little shaky about what this year’s activities will entail. Years past saw Lake Worth musician John Ralston lending a hand and booking as many as 20 performers in store. This year, we aren’t sure yet whether Ralston will be able to bring the goods, time will tell. All is not lost however if the performances don’t go through, John is going to put out 100s of unbelievable records that he has been stockpiling since December. He plans to pull out all the stops and promises customers are going to find treasures they have probably never seen before. We have no doubt Top 5 Records will deliver a Record Store Day worth spinning again and again. Top Five Records, 10 South J Street, Lake Worth ~ Dana Krangel

DJ JAMES BROWN SWEAT Nicholas Dewey is a born and bred South Florida boy with a knack for everything vintage; including a vinyl habit that dates back to before records were cool (again). Dewey, along with his wife and co-founder Kristen Lindholm and their two little girls, run The Modern Historic, a vintage furniture, home goods, and clothing store specializing in 1940s-1970s era goodies. Keeping their mid-century modern theme in mind, the shop recently changed locations to a larger, warehouse style store front, a perfect in -person carnation of their booming online store that has shipped goods as far as Australia and France. But Dewey is a local guy at heart, “We love local people buying this stuff,” he said. Dewey has a passion for specializing in the best vintage that Palm Beach has to offer, exactly what you would expect from someone whose alter-ego is DJ James Brown Sweat. A vinyl junkie since high school, Dewey originally picked up the habit because records were simply cheaper than CDs. “I used to collect records because I liked the actual record more than a CD,” he said. “I got into it more and more in high school and as I got older, I collected records only.” His favorites include Supercharger’s ‘Self Titled’, The Sonics’ ‘Here Are The Sonics’ and Grandaddy’s ‘Sumday’. To do the world a favor and expose young ears to old music, Dewey spins shows around Ft. Lauderdale. The emphasis is on 1950s and 1960s R&B with a little punk thrown in for good measure. More than just an advocate for the new revival of records, Dewey also lends his talents to the local art scene. In the early 2000s, he was over the basic show flyers with a band photo and decided to start designing flyers for local shows under the guise of “The Masked Flyer.” Getting to see his artwork up in his favorite record stores was a big plus. Among the flyers he remembers most fondly are The Intoxicators’ Hukilau Show, Fishermans’ Hukilau Show, and a Zombie show that featured a 6 foot die cut standee. Flash forward to 2013 and while Dewey dreams about one day designing a Rezillos poster, he is pumped to have created an exclusive Record Store Day poster for PureHoney. Let’s be honest, it doesn’t get more local arts and culture than Dewey and his family running a vintage store and spinning vinyl on the side. We salute you! FAU PIMPS ITS SOUL Not to be left out of the race to the top in South Florida’s parade of the bizarre and the absurd, Palm Beach County’s preeminent institution of scholarship, Florida Atlantic University, made headlines last month for its decision to sell naming rights to the school’s football stadium to the world’s largest prison-forprofit company, GEO Group, a company long notorious for human rights abuses in its facilities in Florida, across the U.S. and around the globe. This was the deal: Boca-hq’d GEO gets its name all over the stadium; Boca-based FAU pockets half a million a year for the next 12 years. This lets JailsRUs pose as a public-spirited corporate citizen and good neighbor, and lets FAU appear to be...what? Venal and callous? Desperate for cash? Blind to the ideals of higher learning? Word of the slimy deal drew protests from students, faculty and the community at large, and left the school a laughingstock, highlighted by a blistering few minutes of fame on the Colbert Report, whose host skewered the affair for all the world to see. FAU students, wits that they are, dubbed the field “Owlcatraz.” This public relations disaster and affront to common decency was cooked up in the offices of the school’s administration, a devil’s bargain between school president Mary Jane Saunders, the school’s board of trustees, and FAU alum George Zoley, GEO’s CEO, who, not coincidentally, had been for many years a trustee of the school and twice chairman of the board. In its mission statement, FAU purports to “make meaningful contributions in an increasingly complex global society...by supporting research and service that enhances economic, human, and cultural development.” GEO’s mission, on the other hand, is to squeeze every last drop of profit it can out of the misfortune and misery of others, buying influence to bend legislation that fills its gulag to the brim. George Zoley will walk away from this clusterfuck unfazed, secure at the helm of his pirate ship, unreached by public censure. President Saunders place is less assured. For sucking up to GEO, turning a blind eye to its offenses and undercutting the purposes of the institution she’s supposed to serve, we hope the GEO affair proves to be Mary Jane’s last dance. ~ Karlo M
