HE’S MY BROTHER, SHE’S MY SISTER consists of you guessed it, a brother-sister team. In this case, Robert and Rachel Kolar, backed by Oliver Newell, Lauren Brown and Aaron Robinson. The band’s debut record, a self-titled EP, came out in 2010 to great
local acclaim in HMBSMS’ Los Angeles stomping grounds. But however great the band’s recorded work, it’s live where the group truly shines Taking the glammy image and folksy lyricism of L.A.’s freak-folk movement and running with it to its illogical conclusion, HMBSMS serves up gorgeous vocals, nostalgic melodies and dance-ready beats provided by a rhythm section anchored by Brown, whose sparse kit belies her ability to produce a surprising variety of beats. If you’re not sure where that tambourine is coming from, it’s probably because you can’t see the instrument miked and stuck to the floor, where Brown stomps to produce drumming that involves both her hands and both her feet. The group will be releasing its debut full-length album soon, and the few tracks available sound as though the group has saved some of its best work for the LP. Tunes such as “Can’t See the Stars” and “Straight Shooter” manage to be both warm and sparse at the same time. And that isn’t the only neat trick that the band pulls off. HMBSMS takes the best of old-time folk and contemporary pop and manages to blend the forms to create a sound that is at once both a throwback and harbinger of what folk-rock may sound like in the coming years as a great many other bands catch up to this one. HMBSMS perform 9pm on Friday, May 11 at the Vagabond. ~ Dan Sweeney
TOUGH AS NAILS, DICK DALE Ernest Rutherford is widely credited as the first to split the atom in 1917. James Watson and Francis Crick presented the world with the first known structure of the DNA-helix, in1953. Dick Dale (born Richard Anthony Monsour on May 4, 1937) with his pioneering guitar style and trailblazing manner in which he challenged the maximum wattage his instrument could churn, has had that same impact in rock music’s pantheon. “When it can withstand the barrage and punishment of Dick Dale, it can withstand human consumption,” said revolutionary guitar manufacturer Leo Fender of Dick Dale’s maniacal staccato guitar playing. Dale mentioned this quote to us from Fender, whom he calls his second father, when we caught up with the surf rock legend at his ranch-two thousand feet above Palm Springs. According to Dale, it was not always easy for Fender to keep up, because Dale would keep blowing out the amps he customized for him. Together the two manufactured the first-ever 100-watt guitar amplifier. Dale though still plays with the same original reverb unit and Showman amps that he has been playing since the ‘60s. Challenged by multiple bouts of colon cancer, Dale has also become a champion and inspiration for cancer survivors. Dale, who turns 75 this May, attributes his resiliency to a life dedicated to the martial arts, the care of his wife Lana (a retired VA nurse two decades his younger), and a steadfast avoidance of drugs and alcohol. “Don’t allow your mind to destroy your body by putting things that don’t belong there,” he warned us. He tells us how he saw drugs and alcohol destroy one of his favorite mentees, Jimi Hendrix. “In the beginning he was such a humble kid,” said Dale about he first encounter with the young Hendrix, “but because of his peers, the drugs took over, it was such a shame.” To illustrate Dicks will power and courage, he has played shows while passing kidney stones. Dale says he pours everything he’s got into his performance and will often times need assistance to get off the stage. We are stoked to have such a tough-as-nails true-icon performing at Respectable Street on April 21and Churchills on April 22. ~ Alex Rendon

TRUST YOUR THRUST,JEFF SURGENER An old friend crossed over a few weeks back. Cancer. Nearly 200 people paddled out at Boynton Public on March 4 to celebrate the life and spirit of one Jeff Surgener. Local surfer, board-shaper, artist, husband and father, his company logo, Rhino Tuff, was ubiquitous over the last 20 years. Almost every board at the beach was shaped by Surge and “Trust Your Thrust”, my favorite slogan was visible on a number of t-shirts. This kid was one of a kind, a totally real character whose magnetic presence inspired those around him. Including myself. Alway quick with a witty quip or two or ten, Jeff’s wild ideas flowed consistently, over-flowing with exuberance and genuine enthusiasm. Too many to keep track of. Too many to fulfill. Many of us only dream of taking the road less travelled, Jeff carved his own path. I respected that. During the paddle back to shore, I overheard a story being told by a friend. “Many years ago after Jeff shaped my board he says “so what do you want me to paint on her ole Hodad”? I say “whatever you want to Jeff”. He gives me my board back a few days later with a 6ft naked woman with triple D’s, a muff from the 70’s and fire coming out of her head....I should have known!” Typical Jeff. Riotous laughter ensued. Two months ago he spoke with me excitedly about a weekly art show he wanted to produce in a small space on Ocean Ave. We also planned to run a piece of his artwork as the centerfold in PureHoney at some point. That point never came. To remedy this, a sketch he had given me is reproduced in this issue. I’m stoked to be able to share this piece and his talent with all of you and glad to have completed something we had talked about doing. May we all now at least attempt to do a few of those things we’ve always wanted to do and live our lives with as few regrets as possible. Please share his art with your loved ones. NOTE: If you attend Surfing Florida: A Photographic History at FAU Galleries in Boca, you will see a tribute photo and a new style board Surge had designed. The show runs thru May 12. You can also see one of the many boards he shaped to raffle off at RSC’s Dick Dale concerts on display at Top Five Records in Lake Worth. It has an image of Dick with his signature.
WAYWARD PARADE WORKS With a fresh new design by The Darling Sweets’ guitarist Adam Sheetz and two new signees to its label, Lake Worthbased Wayward Parade is in full marching order this year. The label, a collaboration between local tattoo mogul John Wylie and musicians Serge Witis (aka Captain Bobo,) of Everymen and Lindsey Sayre also of The Darling Sweets, was started last year with the purpose of releasing the work of those two aforementioned bands. Since that time however, Wayward Parade has grown to become the very heart and soul of Lake Worth’s crusty swamp- punk-bluegrass-rock (whatever you want to label it,) movement. Wylie and company have branched out, with the acquisition of Michigan’s Rickett Pass. The group, who performs a punk-charged take on bluegrass, will be releasing its debut with Wayward Parade on March 17. Also joining Wylie’s budding record empire is Fort Lauderdale’s Goddamn’ Hustle. This group is much more jangly than country, but still has a touch of Americana within its core-- comparing them to Guided By Voices lo-fi majesty would not be too far-fetched. Goddman’ Hustle is working on its debut EP with Wayward Parade; it is expected out in a couple of months and a new Everymen album is also in the works for this summer. The Everymen crew landed a few slots on the Vans Warped tour. The Darling Sweets, the female contingent of the Wayward Parade carnival, has plans to release another album this summer as well to coincide with a summer tour. Wayward Parade’s web store will be up very soon and Wylie tells us all releases will be available digitally-on iTunes, Spotify, etc. Wylie too plays guitar in a hardcore outfit called Old Habits. (wonder if this guy ever sleeps?) Old Habits just put up a new fist-in-your-face assault of a song on its Facebook page. Look out for that and a proper CD to drop on April 6, with a full on album release party at the Speakeasy in Lake Worth. www.waywardparade.com ~ Alex Rendon
