BRUISE CRUISE 2: WILD RESPECT PureHoney snagged a few of minutes away from Michelle Cable,
one-half (Jonas Stein being her counterpart,) of the team who orchestrated the inaugural three-day high seas garage rock bash known as Bruise Cruise. The amiable booking agent took time to answer questions about what the pair has in store for Bruisers this year. PureHoney: Everyone we have spoken to who went last year tells us what an absolute blast they had. Did things go off better than expected? Cable: We had some concerns with some of the wilder bands we were bringing on board—especially the Black Lips, -- but everything ended up going smoothly. Nobody ended up under cabin arrest; we did not lose anyone at sea. There were many crazy wild times, with lots of booze involved, but everyone was respectful. PH: Do you feel pressure to exceed people’s expectations for this year’s expedition? C: Definitely. Last year we had good programming, and I think everyone was amazed how organized we were. About 40 percent of Bruisers are coming back this year, so our goal is to top what we did last year, with many more surprises in store for everyone. We are going to be doing more pool parties, lots more giveaways, Fucked Up frontman Damian Abraham will be hosting The Bruiser Dating Game. People are also going to get a kick out of comedian Neil Hamburger, he is hilarious. PH: Thee Oh Sees seemed to be the surprise hit of last year’s cruise. Which band do you think will unexpectedly wow audiences this time around? C: It’s got to be The Togas, they are a super group of sorts-- consisting of Ty Segall, Philip Sambol of the Strange Boys, Shannon Shaw from Shannon and the Clams and Lance Wille of the Reigning Sound,--formed just for the cruise. They are going to be the ultimate party band, performing in togas and playing covers of the Beach Boys, Buddy Holly, the Temptations and other classics. Bruisers will have the chance to vote for covers they’d like to hear. PH: For the first time Bruise Cruiser, some essential items to bring on board, sunscreen, Dramamine, earplugs, condoms. Missing anything? C: A voracious appetite for food and drink consumption. An open-minded attitude, that’s for sure. Also I suggest a fanny pack, they really come in handy. Vitamins are important. Don’t forget the fine-dining wear as the Cruisers and bands will be having a three course dinner together. Bruise Cruise sails Feb. 10-13 with pre-parties on 8 The Stage. Although Bruise Cruise has expanded to modate 525 people versus last year’s 400, tickets ing fast. www.bruisecruisefestival.com ~ Alex

SPRENGEL & LIVERWURSTY: HARDLY ART, HARDLY GARBAGE CORA SPRENGEL: Skin flaps, some bright dirt, the gaieties of everyday life strain, Michael Jackson and TAMBORA REKOTZ: a small-german-town-namedHannover-based collective of friends inspired by Autofreier Sonntag (car-free sunday), old men with a passion for motorized pink handbags, a small dirty bar called Kötnerstube, some guitars, Expo 2000 remains, some TV overkills, old dogs, wind of change – earworms and mutual hate for the public transportation system. TAMBORA REKOTZ’s favorite work routine since 2007: mixing it all up and molding it into shows that are like exhibitions that are like shows, and that have made some people want to stay in Hannover. Nevertheless, Cora Sprengel and Bianca Liverwursty, two of TR’s founding members, are currently staying in New York City for a few months – to take a look around, bring some stuff back home, intern, see a lot of good bands and eat a lot of hamburgers. Besides creating a major part of TAMBORA REKOTZ’s posters and artworks, Cora Sprengel studies Scenography at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Hannover, after having quit her Liberal Arts studies in Bremen. Her drawings and comics were last shown at the Oberdeck, one of the very few lasting nonconformist arts and music institutions in Hannover. The artwork for BRUISE CRUISE is a collaboration between Sprengel & Liverwursty. Looking through Gary Gilmore’s eyes, for sure! D I S C O S O M A Since the start of 2010 Discosoma Records has been pressing first-
rate vinyl from South Florida’s optimum acts, releasing 7-inch singles from Plains, Guy Harvey, Beings, ANR, and Little Daggers to name a few. Run by marine biologist Colin Foord and musician Jared McKay, Discosoma is not your everyday record label—matter of fact, it would not be a stretch calling it a charitable organization. All the profits made from its limited-edition vinyl releases go directly to the Coral Restoration Foundation, a non-profit conservation organization committed to reef restoration in the Florida Keys. The name Discosoma actually refers to a genus of corallimorphs, which are circular-shaped cousins to corals. Besides running a record label, Foord and McKay also head MORPHOLOGIC, a marine biologymeets-art endeavor based in Miami. People had better scramble to get the Discosoma’s latest release, Social Creep —a posthumous 7-inch from the now broken up Miami unhinged postpunk troupe Beings. With only 100 copies made of these hand-numbered, glow –in-the-dark vinyl, with sleeve art by the band itself, we are sure they will not be in existence much longer. For 2012, the label is working on putting out a South Florida compilation called Flannel Beach , a 12-inch record that will feature Discosoma “regulars” as well as Jacuzzi Boys, The Jameses and The Dewars. www.discosomarecords.tumblr.com ~ Alex Rendon
REMEMBERING JEFF STRATTON I first met Jeff Stratton in December of 2000 when I interviewed for the job of calendar editor at New Times Broward/Palm Beach. This being my first job interview out of college, I did what I was supposed to do and wore a nice suit. The editor of the paper brought me into a smallish room with a table and chair, complimented my suit, and invited me to meet the music editor, as I had held that position at my previous gig working for my university’s version of an altweekly.
Jeff Stratton walked in wearing cut-off olive green shorts and a faded black T-shirt that, in Coca-Cola script, read “Enjoy Satan.” I have never felt so overdressed. Anyway, I got the job and worked next to the man for the next four years. After I moved to the other local weekly, City Link, we remained great friends. So when word came down of his sudden death this past week in Honduras, where he had moved a couple of years before, it hit me pretty hard. But while those of us who knew him and loved him feel his loss most deeply, Stratton’s death is a loss for everyone who knew his work. I went on at City Link to write that paper’s music column for four years. My editor there, Jake Cline, had written it for almost a decade. After I took it over, New Times went through a succession of music columnists, including Audra Schroeder and Jonathan Zwickel. Of all of us who covered music in the last decade, when Stratton was at his best, there was no one better. I loved him like a brother. ~Dan Sweeney
