VIOLENCE and ROBOTS and SEA CREATURES
A journey starts with a single murder, and this journey has begun. As Oleander and Mint flee their home in the Appalachians, we meet a mostly metal robot, a concerned inventor, a creature from the depths of the sea wrestling with her place in evolution, and a crew of characters that somehow meet because of an unintentional death off the Blue Ridge Parkway. Love, murder, engineering, and evolution send this cast of lonely creatures into each other’s orbit finding out that time was always waiting. Oleander and Mint is the collective project of three men that were raised below the Mason-Dixon line. Drawing on an agreed love of American landscapes, love, and violence, they created a cast of characters to walk around in those spaces. Two of the men write because they cannot draw. One man draws because he cannot write. In the rich tradition of Gethsemane, these are men that would sleep while the other prays with the knowledge that at dawn all would stand in war. This all started with a drawing of a man and a woman that needed a story. They all knew that there would need to be death... as deliberate and fantastic as any mound men have ever made. They also knew that there would need to be violence and robots and sea creatures if the story were to catch fire. It was an easy match, and within the natural cadence of America, Oleander and Mint became a Republic. Look for their first book to drop in December and meet them in person at Art Basel.

WHY STOP DOING WHAT YOU LOVE TO DO?
Filmmakers Saratoga Ballantine and Dea Lawrence describe their feature length documentary perfectly: “What’s the craziest career choice anyone can make and spend over 60 years pursuing that path? ’Troupers’ profiles actors aged 80+ in Hollywood giving new meaning to the phrase ‘hang in there.’ Meet 12 talented, successful people who beat the odds, followed their dream and still worked well into their 80s and 90s. ‘Troupers’ takes a humorous look at how this fearless group survived parental disapproval, the black list, poverty, divorce, rejection, disappointment, depression, The Depression, bad acting coaches, nasty casting directors, and decades of auditions to do what they wanted to do: Act. Why stop doing what you love to do? Age has nothing to do with anything.” Produced and directed by Dea Lawrence and Saratoga Ballantine. Featuring Carl Ballantine, Betty Garrett, Justine Johnson, Harold Gould, Bruce Kirby, Connie Sawyer, Ivy Bethune, Allan Rich, Marvin Kaplan, Jane Kean, Pat Carroll and Kaye Ballard. FUSSING AROUND W. GUY HARVEY
“It’s meant to be a weird South Florida shout-out,” says Adam Perry about his group’s moniker, a homonym for prominent marine wildlife artist Guy Harvey. The easygoing vocalist and guitarist tells PureHoney that when he moved back down to West Palm Beach four years ago he noticed fish paintings on everything. “I think people get it,” Perry says about the name’s association with South Florida life. First time listeners would probably have a hard time placing the group as a Florida band however, considering the chiming, melodic guitar pop heard on Guy Harvey’s debut 7-inch (“Take Your Time (With Me)”/”Never Seen Snow”) released on local charitable imprint Discosoma Records. Perry agrees, stating that Kiwi bands such as the Chills and others signed on notable New Zealand label Flying Nun Records played a part in influencing his group’s final autumnal output. That is a good thing though; Guy Harvey is evocative in all the right ways. The five-piece just returned from a successful slew of Florida shows with fruitful West Palm Beach indie rockers Surfer Blood. Another 7-inch is in the works, “The Rope”/“Dog Park” is being pressed by the Jameses’ Jesse Bryan’s Mayonnaise Factory label. Although Perry admits his group has been “fussing around” for a while, he promises us that a Guy Harvey full-length is not far away from fruition. In the meantime, you can check out his Kiwi-inspired, flying-sailfish painter-named group perform with Band in Heaven and Miami’s Jacuzzi Boys on Friday, November 4 at Respectable Street. ~ Alex Rendon g u y h a r v e y . b a n d c a m p . c o m
