THE MIND-MELTING MAYHEM OF CHUCK LOOSE
Iron Forge Press proprietor Chuck Loose is a multi-faceted, visionary artist with a mainline into South Florida music. Over the past couple decades, he played drums and/or sang in local punk acts including Chickenhead, the Crumbs, Drug Czars, and The Heatseekers, and promoted many a show via subversive Kinko’s-style cut-and-paste flyers. His artistic chutzpah lives on at Fort Lauderdale-based Iron Forge Press, a design firm he runs with partner Ian Rowan that’s known for some of the most arresting screen-printed concert posters -- utilized by Live Nation, and smaller D.I.Y. events around the country. Everyone from Beyoncé to Fucked Up to Surfer Blood has appeared on Iron Forge’s colorful, witty and mindmelting illustrated posters, which harness the psychedelic talents of Rowan, area creatives including Jessy Nite, Dave Berns, and Francesco Lo Castro, and obviously, Loose’s own award-winning ideas. The promotional materials for Respectable Street and O’Shea’s yearly MoonFest party -- a Halloween extravaganza lighting up Clematis Street in downtown West Palm Beach on Saturday, October 29 -- will feature Loose’s handiwork. forward motion for KRISTI HOUSE
Each month in PureHoney we like to spotlight a charitable arts/music related event that helps raise awareness and money for a local cause that is making a difference in South Florida. This month we shed light on Kristi House, a Miami-based charity that assists children of sex abuse and their families. Starting out in 1994, the nonprofit corporation filled a critically unmet need in Miami-Dade County by providing child victims of sexual abuse with the necessary counseling and emotional, physical and legal support to get them through their traumatizing ordeal. Because sexual abuse is often times linked to a family member, Kristi House also provides counseling the other family members and assists the family with housing to help remove them from the abusive environment. The Kristi House cause is something that outspoken Miami musician and Forward Motions label head Fernando Perdomo truly believes in. “There is a lot of heart in their mission,” said the proud new father of a four and a half-month baby boy named Adrian Bleu, about the charitable organization. Perdomo, with the help of fundraiser Karen Russo, will generously be donating all door proceeds to Kristi House at his label’s one-year anniversary party at Fort Lauderdale’s Revolution Live on Thursday, September 29. For only a $10 cover, attendees will be treated to an ambitious night of music, spanning 16 artists from the budding label (Perdomo-lead progrock unit Dreaming in Stereo and Grammy-winner Jorge Moreno included) and other notables from South Florida’s verdant singer-songwriter scene. FOR SUB POP RECORDS’ MEMORYHOUSE: LIFE IS JUST A FANTASY
Memoryhouse, the dream-pop impressionistic duo from Toronto, plucked its name from composer Max Richter’s debut album Memoryhouse. The soubriquet is more than just a tribute to the German-born composer, but a window into the duo’s aural intention to create a moody blur of reality and fantasy. Like Richter’s album, Memoryhouse’s debut EP The Years (re-recorded, re-mixed, remastered and re-released by Sub Pop Records) is a cinematic experience that creates a sensational experience for the listener. Singer Denise Nouvion’s angelic vocals bend, break and hover over Evan Abeele’s robustly solemn productions – a reflection of his classical training and minimalistic leanings. In short, Nouvion and Abeele are equipped to make you feel. Memoryhouse’s lyrics are fueled by literary giants like Virginia Wolf, David Foster Wallace and Samuel Beckett. “Caregiver,” a fourminute song with 77 words presumably about life and death, displays a poetic economy: “In broken light, the cold grey night/a ghost still around me/ Leave another ghost behind.” Haunt and comfort together, articulated as we know it. Memoryhouse visits The Speakeasy Lounge in Lake Worth on Oct. 28 as part of a 31-stop tour which includes dates with notable acts such as Radio Dept., Neon Indian, The Rest, and a CMJ showcase in New York with J. Mascis and Miami’s Jacuzzi Boys. ~ William Alton
ATL’S MOOD RINGS SPARKLE, SWIM IN POP NOSTALGIA The Atlanta-based four-piece Mood Rings sounds like it emerged straight out of 1992, which I mean as a complement, of course. Formed in the fall of 2009, originally under the name Dirty Girls, the band channels the dreamier side of that textured, pedal-heavy shoegaze sound, awash in reverb and echo – think Swirlies, Slowdive. Marrying these blissed-out melodies with heavenly, Beach Boys-style vocal harmonies, the group conjures multiple moods – as its name suggests – and textures, all of them shuttled from bygone eras. “We each bring a different vision to the band,” says vocalist and guitarist William Fussell. “The way the songs are written, one person will bring a basic idea, and songs are formed together by everybody’s tastes.” Mood Rings’ headphone-tailored, four-track debut EP Sweater Weather Forever shows considerable range while remaining faithful to the cyclonic musicality at its core. The band has toured three times outside of Georgia, and their performance with Orlando’s Saskatchewan on November 17 at The Speakeasy Lounge marks their first appearance in Florida. Mood Rings’ debut 7” features “Promise Me Eternity” b/w “Exorcised Painting” and is now available in the Double Phantom online store. ~ John Thomason w w w . d o u b l e p h a n t o m . c o m www.moodrings.bandcamp.com
