Autumn/Winter
from the editor
F
or two individuals featured in this issue—artist Will Barnet and collector Jack Warner—age is relative. Both men are in their nineties and going strong: Barnet, painting with a new palette he calls his “northern colors;” and Warner, actively collecting and continuing to build at his Alabama homestead, “Whispering Cliffs.” Writer Susan Breitner recently interviewed Barnet about a previously unexplored artistic progression from one of his early abstract works to his figural work of the 1990s. He was truly excited to elaborate on this “discovery” and we are delighted to share it with you (see pages 190–195). Meanwhile, Jack Warner and his wife Dr. Susan Austin share with us their expansive collection of American art. A collector for the past forty years, Warner pursues works that relate to the beauty and history of this country with unflagging determination. Featured on pages 154–167 are works in his two houses, his recently created museum, and the nearby yacht club—an astounding collection. A passion for objects and art drives members of The Decorative Arts Trust (pages 189, 209). Celebrating its thirtieth anniversary, the Trust is a nonprofit organization that supports learning about and exploring the decorative world through symposia and educational programs held around the country and abroad. Membership in organizations like the Trust, along with visiting museums and historic properties, conferring with experts, handling, and reading about objects are among the best ways to gain knowledge about collecting. One Boston couple, coincidentally members of the Trust, has formed their superb collection of classical furniture and decorative arts with the assistance of such resources and using the architecture of their Greek Revival row house as their guide (pages 176–188). Exhibit opportunities abound and we’ve got details of two of the best. Thomas Fletcher (1787–1866) and Sidney Gardiner (1787–1827) of Philadelphia were partners who created some of the most outstanding silver presentation pieces of their time, honoring important figures in the country’s early history. An exhibition opening this November at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and transferring to the Winterthur Museum & Country Estate features their key works (see pages 168–175). Architect, designer, and carver Samuel McIntire (1757–1811) also made notable contributions to the decorative landscape of the new nation. In celebration of the 250th anniversary of his birth, curator Dean Lahikainen has organized an exhibition at the Peabody Essex Museum highlighting the carving career of this talented craftsman (pages 200–208). Enjoy,

William M. Hart (1823–1894) A Respite by the River Oil on canvas, 18½ x 15 inches Courtesy of Meyer Fine Art, Inc., Yonkers, NY Most unsigned paintings never get authenticated with concrete evidence. Such was not the fate for this work by Hudson River artist William M. Hart. For sixteen years this outstanding landscape eluded identification by those familiar with it. Over the years it had been attributed to Winslow Homer, Thomas Anshutz, James Hart, and William Hart. When the painting was purchased in December of 2006 from the Alexander Gallery in New York, it had been given an 80% attribution to William Hart. On March 3, 2007, at 2:30 am, this long standing mystery was solved. While browsing the online catalogue for Pook and Pook Auctioneers in Pennsylvania, the owner came across a study that was signed by William M. Hart. At first glance it was recognized as the study for the mystery painting: the scene, though from a slightly different angle; the hand; and the color palette were aligned. The study was purchased and the two pieces were united. At last William M. Hart can receive the recognition for painting this beautiful American scene.

“Dealers and collectors have been guessing which decoy would be the first to reach the million dollar mark,” says decoy broker Stephen O’Brien, Jr. With his sale of this drake, and a concurrent sale of a Canada goose (see pages 146-148), also brokered by O’Brien, the answer lies with both birds — each sold for $1.13 million. When sold at Christie’s in 2003, deputy chairman John Hays called the decoy “the most important bird in America…by the best maker.” Similar praise was echoed by Decoy Magazine editor Joe 20

Engers, “Without a doubt, the [Crowell] pintail drake is the most familiar decoy in the world.” Commenting on the burgeoning decoy market, O’Brien said, “Waterfowl decoys are a uniquely American art form that have moved to the forefront of the folk art market. Both buyers and sellers have recognized their potential and prices are beginning to climb. The Crowell pintail drake is one of the most iconic and famous decoys of all.” Autumn/Winter

Inspiring Impressionism High Museum of Art, 1280 Peachtree Street, N.E., Atlanta, GA October 16 through January 13, 2008 For more information call 404.733.4444 Inspiring Impressionism is the first complete survey to explore the influence of Old Master painters on impressionist artists. This pioneering exhibition will display examples of the 17th-century Dutch and Spanish Schools and French Rococo style alongside works by 19thcentury French Impressionists. Included in the exhibition are 86 paintings and works on paper by artists such as Monet, Cézanne, Degas, Titian, and Rubens from the collections of over 40 museums, some of which have never traveled to the United States. Inspiring Impressionism will examine the ways in which impressionist artists were informed by their forerunners while creating a new style depicting modern life that came to be known as “Impressionism.” Among the impressionist works paired with traditional landscapes, still

lifes and portraits by Old Masters are Monet’s Summer (1874) and Renoir’s Confidences (ca. 1873). Pairings like Mary Cassatt’s Mrs. Duffee Seated on a Striped Sofa, Reading (1876) and Jean Honoré Fragonard’s Reader (1776) explore connections through use of similar artistic technique, composition, and subject matter. “Inspiring Impressionism asks visitors to rethink preconceived notions about the Impressionist movement and will allow audiences to discover how these artists, like many of their predecessors, imitated earlier art, borrowed particular motifs, and transformed existing compositions and techniques into something completely new,” says Michael E. Shapiro, the High’s Nancy and Holcombe T. Green Director. Highlights continues on page 30
