You can’t deny its pretty and we all got that xmas feeling slightly earlier than Xmas day – but, it was damn annoying! JANUARY Haiti trembles, the world cries and 2010’s first steps were marred by misfortune. At around 5pm (local time), on Tuesday 12th, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Haiti changed the course of the nation. Haiti’s earth trembled 52 times in total, by 24th January, affecting more than three million people. Disaster figures were frightening: more than 230,000 dead, one million homeless...but that was just the beginning of the nightmare for this ill-fated nation. And now the cholera epidemic is spreading faster than predicted and is likely to affect hundreds of thousands of people.
FEBRUARY Alexander McQueen is no more; the fashion world was in mourning because of the sudden death of this show-stopping designer. The British fashion designer was found dead at his home in London in the morning on 11th February. Paramedics who discovered him said that nothing could be done to save him. He was 40 years old and he was about to launch his new collection at Paris fashion week. Farewell our fashion friend, you shall be missed.
MARCH Google has had its fill of Chinese censorship. On 23rd March, following months of complaints, the global search engine provider decide to give China the short shrift by redirecting all search views in China from Google.cn to Google.com.hk. The American owned company was fed up with web censorship and took matters into their digital hands. The solution was open to risks because the unpredictable Chinese government could cut down the line with the server at any time.
APRIL Spring has sprung and it’s all happening at sky and sea – an ash cloud in Europe and an oil spill in the States – in scenes reminiscent of ‘Independence Day’. Airports in Europe collapsed on 15th April when the dreaded volcanic ash from Iceland began to spread into European air space. Delays and cancellations ensued for weeks on end in different countries from Ireland to Norway, reaching as far south as Italy at one point. Across the Atlantic, the oil spill problem kicked off just five days later with an explosion. It spread along the Gulf of Mexico for three months and that wasn’t the only thing to kick off - BP were soon to become public enemy number one.

With the Labour party ousted the Tories, led by David Cameron, won the UK General Election on 6th May. A hung parliament was the result of none of the parties winning the 326 seats needed for an overall majority. The Lib Dem yellows formed a coalition government with the Tory blues on the 12th of this month, making not the green party but a ConDem government. A tearful Gordon Brown announced his resignation as Prime Minister after his party failed to strike a deal with the Liberal Democrats. Mr Brown had left the building – no. 10 Downing St that is.
JUNE The big news was an apology on Bloody Sunday, from Prime Minister David Cameron: “There is no doubt, there is nothing equivocal, there are no ambiguities. What happened on Bloody Sunday was both unjustified and unjustifiable. It was wrong”. This is only part of his speech in Parliament on 15th June, as a result of a court decision about the 13 people who died on that fateful Sunday. But the apology was well received by a cheering crowd who gathered in Derry’s Guildhall Square, including the families of those killed, as a much anticipated response to the Saville Enquiry.

SEPTEMBER Bye bye Big Brother, you’ll be sorely missed by lovers of this guilty pleasure. The loveable Brian Dowling, an Irish former air steward, was crowned the ultimate winner of the show. Channel 4 bid farewell to ten years of British BB, on 10th September, which brought in the Show’s second best rating’s figures since 2002.

JULY Spain and Derry make hit the headlines for sport and culture. On 11th July, Spain had a ‘Viva Espagna’ moment, winning the World Cup final against the Netherlands 1-0, with Iniesta’s goal in extra time. Four days later, closer to home in Liverpool, Derry/Londonderry, was crowned the first UK City of Culture 2013 – another welcome boost for the great North West.
AUGUST Cat Bin Lady makes the nation’s cat lovers squirm. Yes, 24th August was when Mary Bale gained national notoriety. She later claimed to be ‘profoundly sorry’ and was fined for dumping a cat into a wheelie bin with no explanation. Security cameras caught her in the act but thankfully little Lola was rescued unscathed – miaow!
OCTOBER A heartwarming tale with a happy ending in Chile. Although the 33 Chilean miners were known about since August, as a result of a mine collapse, on 13th October the world shared the joy of the unlikely heroes. San José mine, near Copiapó, captured the world’s attention when, one by one, the miners were brought back up to ground level.
NOVEMBER Lula’s successor, Dilma Roussef makes history for becoming Brazil’s first female president. She softened her image during her election campaign by ditching her glasses for contact lenses, getting a new hairdo and a bit of plastic surgery nonetheless! This tough little lady is hoping to make her mark when she takes office in January what with Brazil’s economic success and the gaining the spotlight for the World Cup in 2014 and Olympics in 2016. The nation mourns the loss of Leslie Nielsen, the comic actor from Airplane who died from pneumonia. Long will this comedy great be remembered for his one-liners such as “Don’t call me Shirley.”
DECEMBER Christmas came early this year, at least the snow did at the end of November, leading into this month. The coldest temperatures on record for this time of year and didn’t we feel it! Travel disruptions, school closures and an onslaught of Christmas songs lead us to a climax of “a turkey and some mistletoe”, in the words of the late, great Nat King Cole “Merry Christmas to you.”

One of the UK’s most famous fashion designers committed suicide at his home in London. Media reports suggested Alexander couldn’t cope with recent death of his mother.
Corey Haim – Aged 38 10th March 2010 American filmstar famed for his roles in The Lost Boys and Dream a Little Dream was found dead after a suspected drug overdose.
Gerry Ryan – Aged 53 10th March 2010 Gerry Ryan, one of Ireland’s best known broadcasters, was found dead in his Dublin apartment. Often controversial, Ryan was part of a new wave of young radio and television stars that emerged in the 1980s. Recent news breaks of the toxicology reports from the autopsy that Ryan died of cocaine abuse.
Simon Monjack – Aged 39 23rd May 2010 British film director and husband to the late actress Brittany Murphy was found dead in America just months after the untimely death of his wife. Media reports suggest both Brittany and Simon died of Pneumonia as a result of bathroom mould.
Gary Coleman – Aged 42 28th May 2010 The 4ft 8” mini-star, famed for his role on ‘Different Strokes’ died of a brain haemorrhage. Soon after his death the US media pointed the finger at his wife Shannon as his murderer. Shannon denies this and the case continues ...
Dennis Hopper – Aged 74 29th May 2010 American megastar Dennis died of advanced prostate cancer in a Manhattan hospital. Dennis had a lengthy career lasting over 60 years in film, TV and photography and was best known for his roles in Easy Rider, Apocalypse Now and more recently speed.
Norman Wisdom – Aged 95 5th October 2010 The London-born star was known for his slapstick film roles in the 1950s and 1960s, famously playing Norman Pitkin against frustrated boss Mr Grimsdale. Wisdom died after a series of strokes which lead to a decline in his health.
Tom Bosley – Aged 83 19th October 2010 Most famous for his role as Howard, the father from TV cult-series ‘Happy Days’. Additionally Tom starred in ‘Murder she Wrote’ and also portrayed the eponymous Father Frank Dowling on the TV series Father Dowling’s Mysteries. Tom died in California after a long illness of Lung Cancer.
Leslie Nielsen – Aged 84 28th November 2010 Nielsen starred in over 100 films and 1500 television programmes over his career which spanned over 60 years but was most famous for his roles in Airplane! And the Naked Gun. Cuse of death was Pneumonia

16th July 2010 Location: The GuildhalL To say the atmosphere in the Guildhall was electric was a serious understatement. Pure were lucky enough to be inside the Guildhall when the announcement was made live on television from the BBC’s One Show and beamed direct on the big screen inside. Our competitors included Norwich, Birmingham and Sheffield and when our Culture Minister, Ed Vaizey made the announcement, the crowd of 100s inside the Guildhall literally erupted. It was a very proud moment for the city and one that proved our city is steeped in culture moreso than others, and that together, we as a city can achieve a lot when we work together. 2013 is set to be an amazing year and already the promise of large national events like the Clipper festival and Turner Prize are coming our way along with the possibility of future events like the MTV music awards and The Brits.

rehab Pure’s Jacqui took a trip to Therapie ... and returned a new (younger looking) woman! At 37 and with a not so healthy lifestyle I know I should be doing something to help my skin.
I’m way too chicken to have a chemical peel and not quiet ready for botox. I’m using more creams than you can shake a stick at with little or no effect; so having been invited along to try out a jet peel (an alternative to microdermabrasion, and where water and vitamins are sprayed over skin a thigh speed) and infrared skin tightening at the shiny new Therapie Salon, I couldn’t wait. I have to admit to feeling a little apprehensive. The word peel strikes fear into me; but the new Therapie Salon looks amazing! Very modern, clean and futuristic looking. The staff are really friendly and reassured me I had nothing to worry about, as I’m a real pansy when it comes to anything that may cause me pain. I had look around the salon purely to sate my own curiosity (yes I am very nosey) and loved what I saw. I was taken into one of the rooms where Angela explained exactly what was going to happen during the treatment. The process includes intense exfoliation, hydration, and reduction of fine lines and wrinkles, whilst also stimulating collagen production for tightening of the skin, leaving long lasting results. I was instantly put at ease as the treatment is fully natural and involves a mix of oxygen and vitamin infused saline and applied at a very fast speed. I Was expecting a mini power wash on my face, but it was really relaxing and felt like a mini high-power hair dryer and wasn’t at all unpleasant. When half of my face had been finished Angela let
me check out the results in a mirror, and I can honestly say I was stunned. One half of my face was grey, dull and tired-looking, whilst the other was fresh clean and bright … I really didn’t expect results like that. After the jet peel I had the infrared tightening treatment. This is were the dermis below the skin is heated to aid new collagen growth. This helps tighten the skin and can ward of sagging dryness and even age spots. I’m a bit of a baby were heat is concerned but was advised it is impossible to burn the skin with this treatment. Again I was pleasantly surprised as it was actually quiet relaxing and I lay back and enjoyed. Now for the part you all really want to know. What were the results? Well they were nothing short of astonishing. There was no sign that I had been for a treatment, no redness or irritation. And Ladies after an eyebrow wax I usually look like I have just gone 10 rounds with Mike Tyson. Straight away my skin felt smoother and more plump, My good friends Martha and Betty as I like to call the deep lines in my forehead had been drastically reduced. But the best was yet to come, the Guys in the office noticed an instant difference! On waking up the next morning, things only got better again. The horrible acne breakout on my chin had gone. Even the one reoccurring spot I had vanished. I genuinely had to stop myself from touching my skin as
it really was baby soft.The usual 2inches of double wear foundation seemed a crime to apply to my new uber clean face! A week later and the results are still there. My skin is still baby soft and much plumper, and there is no sign I ever had a break out. I cannot recommend this treatment enough. A gift voucher for Therapie is definitely on my wish list. I won’t be telling the other half what it will be used for, because he’s under the impression cutting out coffee, fags and the odd glass of Chardonnay is responsible for my new clean fresh look.

The first step to scoring this vintage, Beyonce-inspired look is to section off the top mid-section of your hair between your temples. Girls Cocktail Night
For an alternative to the usual saturday night entertainments this town has to offer, take a trip to The Waterfoot hotel to sample the Girls Wanna Have Fun Package! Perfect for that special occasion or just a get together with the girls. For just £20 per person you take part in your own masterclass on cocktail making and you get to drink the cocktails you make as you work your way through the list! Pure tagged along with the girls from Sienna one ‘quiet’ thursday in November. Lets just say these girls know how to have fun – we raised a good few eyebrows from guests dining at the restaurant but a great night was had by all! We set course to the Waterfoot in our own limo which made a nice touch to arriving in style, and although this isn’t included normally it can be arranged if required by the team at the hotel. Within seconds of pulling up at the hotel, we were greeted by a nice glass of fizz and directed to our seats – this was no easy task as organising 12 bubbly hairdressers around the hotel proved a bit difficult to manage – Sorry Rory & Helen (“,) So first on the menu was a Fruit Bellini. Rory talked us through the ingredients and set to work on teaching us how to make our own. For this first challenge ___ took up the gauntlet and recreated Rory’s version step by step. To be fair her version looked nice, tasted well and scored 7/10 on average from the group – not bad for a first timer. Moving on, we decided on the Blackberry Bramble. This seemed a much more complicated mixture, so I stood up for the team and set to the challenge. With this one there was building, muddling, pouring and a mix – I gave it my best stab but clearly Rory’s version looked and tasted heaps better than mines and I’m ashamed to say I scored 5/10. Lastly we set to work on the last cocktail of the evening, the classic cosmopolitan. Made famous as its the drink of choice for the glamorous ladies from Sex and the City. This seemed a pretty easy one in creating so _ took up the challenge and set to work on creating this. Being the loudest of the bunch it was clear she would start to show off and she knocked the socks off the rest of our attempts. Hands down she down just as well as teacher, scoring a huge 9/10. By the end of the night, myself and the girls from Sienna laughed and joked. A great night was had by all and this is certainly a great package to supplement a great night out with the girls and as we stumbled out the door, heals in hand – everyone commented on how we should all do this again!

Nuts Ball: Best Dressed Award Joanne Casey awarded most stylish female at the friendly business awards. For the first year, Pure magazine teamed up with the Londonderry Junior Chamber and their ‘Friendly Business Awards’ at the Nuts Ball, held at the Waterfoot Hotel on Saturday 6th November. The friendly business awards recognise local businesses for their talents and achievements at customer service and day to day operations. Pure was here for a very different reason. We were on the hunt to find the most glamourous lady in attendance on the evening and our award for ‘Best Dressed’ went to local lady-dietitian, Joanne Casey. It has to be noted that everyone really made an massive effort on the evening and there was over 200 people who were all dressed to perfection; but one person stood out from the crowd... our winner! Joanne wore a long shimmering metalic silver ball gown with matching fur gilet. This was a perfect choice as the length in Joanne’s gown accentuated her height and the contast of colours perfectly complimented her skin and hair tones. Joanne was presented with her award and a selection of prizes consisting of £30 voucher for Boudoir Boutique, Hair Makeover at Suede and a meal for two at the Waterfoot Hotel. Many Thanks to those who supplied prizes and to the Junior Chamber, congratulations in putting together a hugely successful event & to our winner Joanne for being the most glamorous in attendance.

After two years in hiding, Duffy returns with her second album ‘Endlessly’. Here she speaks to Pure about living life in the Spotlight, highs and lows of fame and her future plans. Duffy took the world by storm with her debut album ‘Rockferry’ selling over 6.5 million copies worldwide and winning numerous accolades including three BRITs and one Grammy. ‘Rockferry’ was the biggest selling album of 2008 in the UK, from one of Universal Music’s most successful debut artists ever. Now’s shes back and getting ready to take the UK by storm ... again! Your new album ‘Endlessly’ is coming out, are you excited by it? Do you see this as the next step in your career? “I think the next few years in my life are going to be the telling years as to who I truly become as an artist. It’s one thing being catapulted on the public scene and the people’s conciousness, it’s another thing really setting your mark as you develop through the years. So, yes, I’m very excited because I really think this record solidifies certain parts of myself that I’ve needed to solidify” So do you think it’s more of a personal record this time? “I don’t know. I don’t know about being a personal record, I don’t think there is such a thing. I think you’re so emotionally engaged and emotionally involved in what you do as an artist when you write the songs. I don’t know if it’s more personal but of course through the experiences I’ve had, I’ve possibly learnt to become a bit more eloquent on how I say things more directly, that’s something that I feel as though I’ve experienced” Would you say, with the success of ‘Rockferry’, that you have become more confident in your abilities as a performer and a songwriter? “I think you become more convicted, but whether or not you become more confident I’m unsure of, I don’t think I will ever be confident, I think that would make me too self assured. Being confident as an artist is a dangerous quality.” The whole promotional schedule is now gearing up, is that something you enjoy, you are an international artist
so, I can only imagine what the work load would be like… “Yeah the workload, it’s never been an issue either, I’m a bit of an insomniac! I need to give a lot to feel as though I’m contributing. The work load? its more the demands, its more the trying to be in different places, the knowing that you have a global demand, that can be so daunting if I allow myself to think of it. The fact I’ve got to make a trip to Japan, back to New York, back to L.A, then again to France, back to Germany or go to Australia, all the while wanting to remain a British artist” Because you are the sole focus, people do like to gossip and generate rumours, how do you feel about that? How is that something that you cope with? Do you pay attention? “I don’t really pay attention actually. I like to form my own opinion of myself. If I was searching for myself in others, I think I would be very lost, even more lost than I have ever been so I just shun away from it to be honest. I do my work, I keep my head down and try to avoid any speculation” You have travelled far and wide with your career, is there anywhere that you’re hoping to visit for the first time… is there anywhere left to visit for you? “We never did get to go to Brazil. Brazil and probably the Antarctic are the places I wanted to visit. I know that in Brazil, the response to the music is tremendous. I could probably play a gig to about 60,000 people out there, but I just haven’t had the chance to go. I cant wait to party in Brazil.”

always knew that this was going to happen. I think my determination was something that couldn’t be measured. I don’t know why I wanted to belong in music. I don’t know what pushed me forward; I still to this day don’t know what I’m looking for, but they knew I was going to succeed, or die trying. I think they just had to wait in the wings and see how fate would take me. With the fame, are there up sides and down sides and can you give us some examples?
When you are away, do you get homesick for Wales? Or for where you live now? “I obviously long for the finer things I used to experience which is being on an empty beach, walking with only myself and my thoughts for miles around, but that being said, I never have any regrets. I don’t yearn, I don’t really look back; I’m constantly looking forward so I don’t give myself the opportunity to lick my wounds and want to be somewhere else. I decided that this is the place I have chosen to be and I accept it whole-heartedly.” Are you glad that you’ve had this opportunity? “I know I put myself in good stead when I stand in front of 60,000 people, I feel as though I have earned it. I’ve worked from 150 capacity venues all the way through to what you see today, so I definitely know what its like to be on stage, I’ve been on it thousands of times now, so I don’t feel as though it’s a place that is alien to me, in fact, it feels quite peaceful and happy.” Do you mind me asking, how does your family feel about your success? You’re one of the biggest selling British female artists of the decade… Yea… I’m still the daughter, still the sister and still the friend, but they

When you have any kind of success, you earn the right to have your say and I’ve wanted that for a very long time. It was very difficult at 19 to convince people I knew what was best for me, so now I’m getting closer to that. If I think about the down sides of fame, I guess it’s the fact that nothing can be erased. The fact that whatever you do will stay around forever; from this interview to whatever you do in your private life. I’m very cautious of that. I’m fully aware that it could always be something that I regret; when I look back when I’m 60 because of the age of the internet. I’d have to look back at myself coming out of a nightclub really drunk and half naked. That’s why I’m very cautious of doing those things. I try to keep my private life to myself, so that I can keep my vices to myself…If I’m going to go out and be young and wild. I just cant afford to do it because it will jeopardise what I stand by.”
CELEBRITY INTERVIEW That’s what sets you apart from some of the people around who do that….
Are you able to go out and walk your dogs unnoticed when you’re at home?
“I am very much one of those sort of wild, young girls, I like to enjoy myself. When I get drunk I either laugh or cry. So I think back to the last few years how many moments I could have been seen with mascara on my face, pouring my heart out to friends about something over numerous bottles of wine and how lucky I have been that I made the right choices to do it in private.”
“I have to admit, I have a dog walker. I don’t know if I’d want to be seen in my vintage coat with a set of Wellington boots… I remember taking them to Wales, on the beach, that was amazing and nobody was around. I just love those kind of things, I think they are so healthy. I sometimes forget to live in the moment and take a look around me and appreciate what’s going on. So we have to be kind to ourselves and enjoy those moments when we’re not working or worrying or obsessing or being passionate, we just have to be.”
Obviously, now you’re in a loving, stable relationship, you’ve also got two dogs. Does having this kind of normality in your life really help? Is it something you enjoy? “I think Stability is really important for anybody in life. The finer things that keep you grounded and make you feel safe wherever it might be and whatever it is you do and so for me I definitely feel as though I’ve got something to hold close to my heart that even when I’m thousands of miles away from the place I call home, I have something I feel connected to.”
What are your plans in 2011 for the UK? Are there touring plans, are you starting to plan? “Of course behind the scenes there is a lot of talking about what I would like to do in terms of my live performance and I’ve said I’d like to wait until at least February to announce any dates. To allow others to live with my record, to allow people to have it in the backgrounds of their lives so that we can all stick together.”
“I think pop star more than showbiz. Showbiz sounds a little bit too feather boa!” Are you planning something spectacular? “Of course I want to make it visually amazing, I sometimes feel that because I’m an organic artist as they call me, that I sometimes get forgotten about for pulling tricks out of the bag. You look at a Kylie Minogue concert and its full of visuals and dancing and the same at a Take That concert as well. I want to push myself in those departments. Just because I’m organic and I can sing, I write the material and I’m considered a songwriter, doesn’t mean I don’t want to have a blast and explore my pop star elements also”. Yea… Why cant you be a showbiz woman…? “I think pop star more than showbiz. Showbiz sounds a little bit too feather boa!” You’ve had your first film role with ‘Patagonia’. You’ve been approached before about film roles but have wanted to focus on your music. Was it something you enjoyed doing, is it something you would like to do more? “I can’t quite explain the response I seem to get from the film world and it came as quite a surprise to me, its something that I never quite expected. That being said, my decision to do ‘Patagonia’ was not because I wanted to explore my acting skills although equally they were valuable for me. I wanted to go back and make a welsh movie that would belong to the welsh public and that they would cherish. It was slow moving and beauti-
fully shot and romantic and charming. I was drawn more to the context of the piece rather than my introduction.” So if it was a story that did grab your interest, would that be something that was of interest to you going forward? “I think it has to be something that I feel passionate about and something that I feel drawn towards and that I feel would stand the test of time” And finally… Any great plans for Christmas? “I have plans but whether I will see them through is another matter. I only know what I’m doing as far as the end of today in terms of the diary. I shall keep it open and hope that I can have lots of fun and raise a glass…”

Pure speaks exclusively to Natalie about her new life as a mum, Eastenders, wedding plans and her life in the spotlight …. Natalie Cassidy has come along way since her trumpet blowing days as Sonya on Eastenders. Since leaving the soap, Natalie shed mounds of weight, released a fitness DVD and stole the show on Strictly Come Dancing. Nowadays, life is all very different to her past life as lagerhound and all round east-end party girl with the birth of her first born child, Eliza Beatrice and engagement to Fiancée, Adam.
How are you finding being a Mum and how has life changed for you? “I mean anyone who says life doesn’t change is lying. She absolutely is my life now. My life is now centred around the baby and making sure she ok before everything else, and that she has everything she needs. It’s absolutely wonderful, apart from the not sleeping!”
Natalie lived her pregnancy through a lens with her hit ‘fly on the wall’ show airing on e4, Becoming Mum. Natalie’s honest ‘warts and all’ portrayal, shows an honest insight into her celebrity life, personality and all the fears new-mums have pre-birth.
Would you have any advice for our readers on motherhood? “I would just say enjoy every second of it, because you won’t have it forever. Eliza has already changed so much. I just can’t believe how much.”
Rarely out of the tabloids, Natalie now longs to turn her back on late nights, fags and booze and turn over a new leaf. But can she really give up all her vices? How will a young celebrity cope with juggling pregnancy and her showbiz career? Will she be able to deal with the pressures of press and paparazzi intrusion? And can she balance a career in the spotlight with a ‘normal’ family life?
Most newly engaged Ladies can’t wait to show off their engagement ring, did you find it hard keeping your hidden? (Natalie couldn’t show of her ring due to a magazine deal with OK!) “I did yeah, I really did. Um but obviously due to the reasons with exclusivity I had to keep it hidden. I knew I would have to. I have had that ring for such a long time, as my mum passed away 8yrs ago and it was left it to me. So in the end, it was just really lovely to put the ring on my finger, for all the right reasons and because of the wedding.”
We’ve been following the show and it’s really funny; seems much more down to earth than some of the other shows. “Oh really, I’m glad you’re enjoying it. That’s exactly what I want. I’m really enjoying it. I wanted to show a different side to me, rather than being all diva-ish and glamorous with photo shoots. I wanted to show it’s just a job.” Did you find it intrusive having a camera crew around? “It can be intrusive if you’re tired or having a row or something, so you think, oh just go away. But, that’s what I have signed up to do, so I just had to get on with it.” What was the worst thing about making Being Mum? “Um, the worst part was being out and about with the camera. I already get recognised after enders (Eastenders) and strictly. I really don’t mind that, but when you take a camera crew to the Isle of Wight festival or in the supermarket, it attracts quite a lot of attention and I’m not really an attention seeking kind of person so I found that quiet hard.” You mentioned strictly, have you been following the show this year? “Yes I have absolutely. There’s a lot of great people there, but I want Scott Marsden to win obviously, because he’s part of the Eastenders family.”
Speaking of the wedding have you made any plans yet? “We haven’t made any plans at all. We’ve have been so busy with the baby! I want to start planning as well, but it’s so expensive these days to plan a big wedding.” So it’s a big wedding you would prefer? “Well I want a traditional church wedding with lots of people there, so I suppose we will just have to wait and see.” It was quiet clear in the show that the tabloids like to twist news stories to sell more papers. For instance, when it was insinuated you had been drinking at the Isle of Wight festival when in fact, it was only lemonade that you had been drinking. How do you cope with that? “Well I think it was quiet good, that’s why its brilliant to do this kind of show because people can watch it and see what actually happened that day. People really do believe everything they read. It is unfair, and it’s so bad but people pay for a paper so they believe what they read. Saying I was drinking when I was pregnant was out of order but, because they insinuate rather than saying Natalie Cassidy was drunk, they just get away with it.”
CELEBRITY INTERVIEW The press eventually discovered your new address. Do you find it hard to trust people incase they leak stories to the press? “I think its hard because you can’t go through your life without meeting new people and trusting the people you know; But at the same time, I think it’s there in the back of my mind, thinking are these people for real? I’ve been in the public eye now for 17 years, so I can pick up on it straight away. It was inevitable that the tabloids would find out my new address but I would have liked it to take a little longer. Its OK, I know they are only doing their job.” Fashion wise who would be your all time favourite designer? “That would definitely be Coco Chanel. I think she was really beautiful and the way she dressed was absolutely amazing. I love black and white and I love a crisp clean look. In modern day, I love Riahanna. I love the way she looks and how she dresses.” Can you give us one piece of winter fashion advice? “My advice would be to invest in a vintage fur coat. The animals haven’t been harmed recently and the coats are just hanging around doing nothing so we should use them to wrap up well for winter.”
You recently pre-
sented the five o’clock show, did you enjoy that? “I really enjoyed myself; It was a full hour. I never thought I would have a chance to do something that big, but hopefully, maybe someday I could do something like that again.” Have you been following Eastenders recently? “I haven’t seen too much of it, but I seen my onscreen brother die, which was weird. I watched them all come back for that and I was thinking, I wish I was there.” Do you keep in contact with any of the cast? “Yeah I keep in contact with Patsy Palmer and Katie Anisworth, and most of my on screen family and also Steve McFadden.” Can you ever see yourself go back? “Absolutely! It’s always in the back of my mind, it really is like a second home to me.”

Hi Brian, How are you? Are you enjoying this weather? “Very busy but that’s good, the weathers awful! it’s nipples ahoy! I would need nipple plasters today.” Your life has changed dramatically over the past 10 years, do you miss you days with Ryanair at all? “Mmm, you know what I do, some times. I think I miss the freedom of what we did at Ryan Air. We travelled all over Europe, I met great friends; friends that I’ll have for life. We laughed every single day and we never knew what would happen, as there was something spontaneous every single day. I don’t miss the delays and I don’t miss being spat at!”
Do you have a particular funny story from your time with Ryanair? “Well I can’t you them all because Ryanair may sue me. But I can say there was one time I got in a physical fight with a female passenger. She was trying to get into the flight deck with a pair of scissors. I know it doesn’t sound funny but I had to have her arrested by the German Army when we landed and she was then banned from flying with us again. Stupid Witch” You were crowned Ultimate big Brother this year how did that make you feel? “Do You know what it was really really weird, It was amazing to be the last person standing in the house and out of the last eleven years is an amazing achievement. I think that it hasn’t hit me in a sense, I think I probably realise what an achievement it was over time. But at the moment I’m just like, I won Big Brother, Yeah! I feel dead chuffed but that makes me sound really arrogant. I am glad it was me and not Makosi or Nadia, you know what I mean.”
What are the main changes in your life since winning big brother? Oh the fact that you are in the public eye changes your life straight away. People recognise you and approach you and stuff. If it wasn’t for BB I wouldn’t be living where I’m living and wouldn’t have the life I have. So from that side everything’s changed. I think it’s made me a better, stronger person and I don’t take myself as seriously as before BB. Can you tell us your best and worst experiences from the bb house? “I suppose the best experience is just actually being in the bb house. The fact that you’ve been chosen to be part of something so amazing. The worst bit was missing your friends and family and the nominations. When you nominate people, you almost feel as if your stabbing them in the back. It’s easier if you don’t like them but when you actually like everyone, it can be hard.”
You have recently been doing wagons den how was that? “I loved that. I have a really big input into what goes on in the show, Katherine Lynch is a really great comedian, she does the show as one of her characters Sheila chic. It’s so funny and a little rude. We have celebrity guests we kinda take the piss a little but in a good way. It’s a laugh to take people away from the dreary reality at the moment.” You have been lined for cheerio’s panto again this year what keeps you going back for more? “Money laughs Brian, no they write the part for me every year and I can really have a creative input to it. I can sit down and go, I’d do that. Its in Ireland, runs for six weeks and it’s good fun.
Who was your all time favourite house mate? “I would say Nadia; I thought she was amazing, the whole story & the whole fight night thing! I loved getting to spend time living with her in the ultimate big brother.”
Did you spend any time with Jade away from Big Brother? “Me and Jade would meet socially at different events and stuff; We would have a chat and a laugh and a drink. We weren’t kind of friends in a way. The thing with Jade is that she changed her life completely and the term celebrity. Jade was a very nice person.” You are Currently the face of coca colas designated driver Campaign, can you tell us a little about that? “The campaign is award winning and every year people get behind the wheel after having been drinking. People put their lives and strangers lives in danger. This is a way to say, if your sensible and don’t drink, we will give you free drinks. It’s just a way to highlight the fact that people socialise more, so if your going to drive we will give you free coke and sprite and fanta or even sprite zero, No calories, it’s all about the calories girl. It really is a serious thing, I think people should never drink and drive, just don’t! Why would you?”

Everyone’s favourite ASBO teens, Nathan (Robert Sheehan), Kelly (BAFTA-nominee Lauren Socha), Curtis (Nathan Stewart-Jarrett), Alisha (Antonia Thomas) and Simon (Iwan Rheon) are back for a second series and a Christmas special of E4’s hit comedy drama Misfits. So to recap; a freak storm left our posse of social outcasts with super powers; Curtis can turn back time, Kelly can read minds, Simon can turn invisible and Alisha can send people into a sexual frenzy with just one touch. Then there’s their two dead probation workers (one is buried under the local environmental monitoring station; the other stored in a freezer in the community centre). And finally, unbeknownst to the others, Nathan is trapped six feet under in a coffin, immortal and very much alive. The cast of Misfits are having a John-andYoko moment – which is to say, they’re all lying in the same double bed in their trailer on the set of the second series of the BAFTAwinning drama. Although in their case, they don’t appear to be protesting against global warfare, but merely against the concept of standing up. Lazing around in their orange jumpsuits, they look every inch the troubled, ASBO youths they play in the series. But such an impression lifts the moment they enthusiastically respond to questions. You GUYS ARE THE STARS OF A BAFTA WINNING DRAMA. hOW DOES THAT FEEL? DO YOU KEEP PINCHING YOURSELVES? All: Yeah. Iwan: We were just happy to get nominated. Nathan: We weren’t expecting to win at all. We were just enjoying the champagne. Antonia: Yeah, I sat down, took my shoes off, ready to enjoy the ceremony. Lauren: It was the first award. We all thought The Street was going to win. At least, with it being the first one up, none of you would have been drunk. Iwan: No, and then we got to get drunk. It’s not bad going, because it was your first big TV role for most of you, wasn’t it? Nathan: Yeah, I’d mostly done theatre - some stuff at The Royal Court and The Almeida. Lauren: I’d just been to a workshop in Nottingham called the Television Workshop, and then I did a film called The Unloved. This came straight after that, really. Antonia: I’d just left drama school. The day I left was the day I started Misfits. Iwan: I was doing a show called Spring Awakening in the West End, and that finished and the filming for Misfits started. Do you like the fact that the show’s got a real dark side? Iwan: Yeah, I think that really makes it what
it is. It’s a bunch of normal people with these mad superpowers that they can’t control. They’re really very reluctant superheroes, and they’re a bit rubbish, and I think that means people can watch it and identify with their characters. I’ve no doubt that you get asked this in every interview you ever do for Misfits, but if you could have a superpower, what would it be? All (instantly, confirming that they’re asked this all the time): Shape-shifter. Iwan: Actually, I think I’ve changed my mind about this. I think teleportation. I was sitting on the train the other day, and I was thinking “I would just never have to do this.” It’s even better than flying, I think. Nathan: That’s quite good, actually. Antonia: Also, Penny Crayon. Nathan: That doesn’t really count. Antonia: No it does, man, it’s a power. She has this incredible crayon, and anything she drew became real. Nathan: Yeah, but that’s not her, that’s the crayon. Antonia: Oh, is it not her? Lauren: I’d like to be Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Iwan: What’s her power, though? Lauren: Everything. Nathan: She’s not really a superhero though. You’ve got to stay in the genre. Antonia: Okay then. Shape-shifting’s pretty cool.

MISFITS Which one of you is the most like your character? [They all pause, giggle and look at Lauren]. Lauren: Probably me. Me and Kelly are like that! [Crosses fingers]. Antonia, you have a lot of sex scenes. Is that embarrassing to do? What do you do to cope with them? Antonia: Yeah, I think when we first started series one I was really nervous about them. I was nervous, as an actress, about being perceived to do a lot of sex scenes. I was a bit worried about the whole typecasting thing. But it’s still a great character and a great part, and you just have to get into the character and get into the mode and just do it. But you get used to it, it’s fine. All (laughing): Robert. How have your lives changed as a result of the success of Misfits?
Antonia: Day to day not at all dramatically. But work-wise it’s been quite nice. It gives you a bit of a profile so that casting directors know who you are, and they’re more likely to get you in to see them, which is a start. That’s been great. Iwan: It’s injected an enormous amount of self-belief into the work that we’re doing. We always had that, but now we’re even more passionate about the show. We believe in it and we love it and we want it to be as good as possible. When you’re out and about, do you get recognised much? What’s that like? How have people been? Nathan: People have been cool. Iwan: Yeah, people have been really good. Lauren: Most people are nice, not many want to make trouble. And you tend to ignore it if they do. You just keep your head down. But I’ve not changed, I’ve still got the same boyfriend, I still live with my mum. You guys went on Jonathan Ross. I imagine that was pretty nervewracking? [They all agree vigorously]. Lauren: I wanted to try and get a little bit tipsy, just so you’re at that confident level, but I just felt too sick to drink. And I had Jedward next to me, and Kim Cattrall. What can we expect from the second series? Iwan: It’s bigger, much larger scale. And it’s funnier. There are new characters coming in with some crazy superpowers.

Saturday afternoon in town is already ramping up a gear in the run up to Christmas. I am not a fan of all the hustle and bustle, so I was delighted to escape from the hullabaloo for lunch at encore. Having booked a table for the fabulous Jazz Lunch we headed off with growling tummies and sore feet. The moment I entered Encore there was a distinct shift in atmosphere, to a relaxed and comfortable setting. With a Jazz trio lead by Ursula on vocals and Rory and Peter in accomanyment, providing an entertaining but in no way overwhelming background. What a treat to have a relaxed lunch served with good live music. The menu was inviting and had just the right amount of dishes. I opted for the spiced honey salmon served with noodles. And what a treat it was the salmon was moist and sumptuous, and the noodles cooked to perfection. My colleague selected the Mexican lasagne which I thought was a brave choice as he has never been happy with any lasagne he
has been served previously. Not this time though, as the lasagne with a Mexican twist went down a treat and was followed with a statement that completely astonished me as he deemed it the “best lasagne ever tasted”. Both of us selected the chips as a side after sneaking a peek at other diners plates theirs looked totally to die for. The jumbo sized homemade chips were perfectly crisp on the outside and soft the whole way through. I opted for a latte served with a flake and thought there was a definite ‘eye bigger than the belly moment’ when my colleague opted for the raspberry ruffle cheesecake. Talk about food envy and although the latte was delish, I couldn’t help feel a little jealous when his cheesecake arrived. It was so well presented it was almost a crime to eat. Wow what a desert the biscuit was, exactly the right consistency and the spoon just cut through it.
The food was exceptional; I really cannot do the presentation or flavour of the food any justice and only by trying it, can you truly appreciate it. The Jazz lunch at encore is definitely the most entertaining lunch I have had in this City . I’m heading back there this week and cannot wait this time as I won’t make the mistake of skipping the desert. Martin John McCafferty is no stranger when it comes to the music scenes of Derry and Belfast. He has headlined the City of Derry Jazz festival, amongst past greats such as Jules Hooland and Van the man, armed with his 12 piece Swing Time Big Band, and with several long standing residencies in Belfast; most notably Cafe Vaudeville for the last 5 years, Martin John has made Swing and Jazz his career, and a successful one at that.

His performances of the golden standards of the Rat Pack era however have not been confined just to Northern Ireland, and to date, his career includes performances in Claridges London, for Liz Hurley, at Old Trafford for the 50th Birthday of Eamon Holmes, in front of guests such as Sir Alex Ferguson and Jonathon Ross, and as further afield as New York and at the Plaza In Las Vegas. With the help of his continued success performing this genre of music, behind the scenes Martin has been able to develop and hone his song writing skills, and now at 29 years of age is finally ready to let us sample some of his own original material. Martin says, I have been writing music from a very early age, and have always wanted to perform my own material. When i was younger i though the best way to do this was to enter the TV talent shows, which i did, and while somewhat successful in Fame Academy getting down to the last 30 and down to the final 22 on the X Factor in 2007, this, in hind sight, would have been the wrong route to take given how manufactured some of those performers end up. So now with an ever growing fan base, i can get my own music out there and hopefully where they have enjoyed my version of those great swing classics, they will also enjoy my own offerings.’
Recently Martin John gave us a glimpse of his own offerings performing at the City of Culture celebrations in the Guildhall Sq, followed by the Magners Light Fall for fashion event, where he officially launched his new unswung material backed by his brother, Mickey McCafferty (Macfest 2011), and Stephen Sheridan from John Derry and the Heads, an all start line up to say the least, and two amazing musicians. With a great response already following these gigs, Martin, fresh off a Cruise Ship, performing Frank and the fella’s, will now be getting his head down in the studio to work on his original tracks and expects to have completed his debut album, by March 2011. Local band, Django Django; 2010 was a great year for Django Django (Last month’s Local Talent). They released their second single ‘Wor’ on their our own label in March and got a great reaction from UK press, including featured as single of the week on NME. Coca Cola then approached the band as they’d made a $5 million video with a well known skateboarding director and wanted to use the full version of ‘Wor” as the backing track. Their debut album is set to be released in April. Alongside recording they managed to fit in some festivals over the summer playing Glastonbury, Stop making sense in Croatia, Jersey Live, and End of the Road and have just been signed to French record label, Because Music.
Boy & Bear are a five-piece alternative band from Sydney who have toured with Mumford and Sons. Currently touring the UK with a sold out debut headline show at The Luminaire in December and release their debut EP ‘With Emperor Antartica’ on the 6th December. Florrie is as traditional a musician and performer as there could possibly be, but at the same time a completely new type of independent pop artist. The British 21 year old is a multi-talented drummer, singer, songwriter, programmer and guitarist. She is the former Xenomania house-band drummer and has now fought her way out from behind the band to take centre stage with her own music. Florrie is also quickly becoming a hit with the fashionistas with the likes of Vogue taking her to their hearts after her roof-raising performance at a recent Ponystep party in East London.
Gypsy & the Cat are 22-year-old Xavier Bacash & 24-year-old Lionel Towers, who only a year ago began making music in a garage in Melbourne. With a sound that is filled with glorious melodies and soaring epic choruses, their endlessly endearing dreampop is already making waves in Australia where their album has been receiving rave reviews.
The Heartbreaks are originally from Morecambe but now residing in Manchester formed in May 2009 after bonding over shared passions; Motown, bittersweet romance and the English seaside. All in their early 20s, The Heartbreaks have stolen hearts and set pulses racing with their determinedly romantic take on British pop culture. The Heartbreaks are currently working on their debut album and will tour cities of the UK this December before releasing a new single early next year.

Her debut single, ‘Do It Like A Dude’, out on January 7th, is a heavy urban-pop anthem which already has airplay support from the likes of Kiss, 1xtra and radio 1.The swaggering video for the single has become an internet phenomenon, receiving over 2 million youtube views in just one week.
Based out of the Lower East side of Manhattan, The Knocks are emerging as a real force to be reckoned with in the world of music production. They’ve made a name for themselves producing tracks with undiscovered acts such as Alex Winston, as well as remixing some of the biggest names in the game such as Ellie Goulding, Marina and The Diamonds and Passion Pit.
22-year-old Pearl, AKA Katie Sutherland and her band The Puppets, have been receiving a steady stream of attention over the last year with performances on the BBC Hogmanay show on New Year’s Eve, sets at a host of summer festivals including T in the Park along with support tours with The Hoosiers and Alphabeat and their own packed out headline shows. Pearl and the Puppets released the ‘Because I Do’ EP earlier this year which was a collection of instantly loveable feel-good summer folk-pop songs and Pearl is currently in the studio working with a host of writers and producers on her debut album due out in 2011.
20-year-old urban pop artist Talay Riley had his first UK #1 last year with Chipmunk’s ‘Oopsy Daisy’ which he wrote. He followed this with a UK Top 10 as a featured artist and co-writer on Chipmunk’s ‘Look For Me’. Talay’s debut single ‘Humanoid’. With an N-Dubz support tour and most recent support gig for Jessie J already under his belt, Talay is building a strong following and is currently working on his debut album which will be released in 2011.

One woman, One world, One Year…… Buckle your seats and enjoy the ride. So after sitting in work one day and loosing the head, after several ‘I’m definitely going to travel the world this year’, that’s exactly what I did……
I reach Bangkok after a somewhat interesting flight, between finding out the two boys seated next to me only live 10 miles down the road, or the strange emotional feeling I got while waking up mid- flight looking around at everyone sleeping and realising ‘I really am doing this…… I really am jetting off to take on all the ‘wonders of the world’ alone, me, by myself on my lonesome’, but how wrong could I possibly have been. Arriving in Bangkok, the sun was shining, it was humid and the smells around the airport were inviting. Waiting for my rucksack to arrive I stumbled across two guys in the same situation, got chatting, grabbed a cheap fare ride to the city and as the saying goes ‘the rest is history.’
Thailand, as a tourist country is often known as ‘The Land of Smiles’. The culture there is unique and refreshing. Arriving onto the great Khao San Road at approximately 8pm was an eye opener, one of the busiest night markets in Bangkok. Perhaps more than any other city, Bangkok is a city for the senses. There are amazing sights- like the golden- spired ‘Wats’ that dot the city; amazing sounds- the whir of tuk- tuks and buzz of conversation; amazing touch- the feel of silk and the touch of the Thai massage and of course the amazing smell and tastes of the Thai food! Have you ever savoured on duck noodles or had boiled minced pork wrapped in yellow dough? I didn’t think so! Well, it’s Bangkok, the largest collection of street stalls you will ever come across. Any sane human being would get confused with the wide array of stalls that line the streets. Bangkok is the place you can visit over and over again and always find something new. Bangkok has hundreds of temples, each with thousands of reflective surfaces that dazzle.

Temples, Buddha and incensories compose the mass majority of the city scene. The Royal Grand Palace is in reality a walled town covering an area of over a square mile. Chinatown is a colourful, exotic and pleasingly chaotic area, packed with market stalls and probably the highest concentration of gold shops in the city. The Floating Markets offer an authentic experience. Imagine hundreds of wooden row boats floating by, each laden to the brim with farm-fresh fruits, vegetables or flowers. Food vendors fill their vessels with cauldrons and charcoal grills, ready to whip up a bowl of ‘boat noodle’ or seafood skewers upon request. Wat Pho (The Temple of the Reclining Buddha), It’s the largest temple in Bangkok and famed for its huge and majestic reclining Buddha measuring 46 metres long and covered in gold leaf. The Buddha’s feet are 3 metres long and are exquisitely decorated in mother-of-pearl illustrations, this is definitely a must see! Simply Magical. If Bangkok had a colour, it would most definitely be pink. Hot pink. Like a girl’s brassiere, or those gorgeous metallic fuchsia and violet taxis which ply the streets and walkways.
With millions of visitors from all over the world each year, Bangkok inevitably makes for an ideal place to ‘people watch’. And where could be more interesting to do so, than this famous melting pot? An exhilarating cocktail of sights, intoxicating aromas and cosmopolitan pleasures, Bangkok’s flavours are at first intense. Once you acquire a taste however, you’re hooked! So, what are you waiting for? Grab a seat, get a drink and enjoy the show!

The chancellor has raised the rate of VAT from 17.5% to 20% in a move that will rake in £1bn a month towards cutting the vast public finances deficit. The new higher rate of tax – which brings Britain into line with the European average – will take effect from 4 January 2011, slightly earlier than most business groups and economists had expected. There are concerns, however, that the new higher rate of VAT could also stoke inflation, cause cash-flow problems which could push some businesses into insolvency and trigger higher interest rates – increasing the danger of the economy lurching back into recession. Are the days of recession over or will this bring around round two?

Members have also attended a number of business events and conferences organised by the senior Chamber. Annually, the Junior Chamber host the now well-established ‘Voice of the Future’ a public speaking competition for local schools as well as the ‘Friendly Business Awards’ for local independent and multiple retailers in relation to customer service excellence. In relation to the social aspect of the chamber – jazz weekends, casino nights, wine evenings, film premieres, cocktail & tapas events as well as attending business dinners, formals and orchestral concerts are just some of the wide range of activities undertaken. The event highlight of my year as President has been the Annual Nutt’s Ball which we held on Saturday 6th November 2010 in the Waterfoot Hotel. This event was well attended and was funpacked – there was an award for ‘Best Dressed Female’, spot prizes and raffles (with prizes donated by a large number of local businesses), a gourmet banquet and dancing till late. An event not to be missed. However, events come and go – but for me as President the highlight and legacy of my year in office has been working with the Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice – a charity which cares for children and young people with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions, and supports

Turner Prize
Turner Prize to be held in Derry in 2013 as part of its City of Culture celebrations. It is the first time the prestigious art prize has been held in Northern Ireland. Derry will host a three-month-long exhibition created by the shortlisted artists, as well as the ceremony announcing the winner. Channel 4’s new series ‘The House That Made Me’ sees famous figures take a trip back in time, to their childhood home which has been meticulously transformed back to exactly how it was when they were growing up. One of those taking part in the series is pop star Jamelia, whose return to her Birmingham roots proved to be a fascinating, funny and moving experience. Here, the bubbly Brummie reveals why she wanted to make this series, how it was a more emotional experience than she’d expected, and why she used to get up at 5am every day when she was a teenager. Why did you decide to take part in this series? What was the attraction? I’m very selective about the TV shows that I
do - [Laughs] apart from panel shows, obviously! - and the TV shows that I do, particularly something so personal, like this - I wanted to know what it was going to achieve, I wanted it to be inspirational and make a difference. Being in the public eye is a big responsibility to me, and I don’t want to have a negative effect on people. Describe the area that you grew up in. I grew up on a council estate in Hockley in Birmingham. It was mainly populated by black people - it was one of the more multicultural inner city areas at the time, but it was mainly black people. When we moved in, all the houses were newly built. I think it represented progress for a lot of people who moved there at the time. I think people were very proud of their surroundings. I would describe it as
idyllic. I mean, it wasn’t a farm, and we didn’t have cows and chickens to feed, but it was a fantastic place to grow up. When was the last time you’d been back there? It was just before we moved out - I was 16 or 17 at the time. I moved to London permanently to do my singing. Going back there over 10 years later was really weird. It was a lot smaller than I remembered, but as soon as I was in there it felt like home. Were you impressed by the job they’d done in recreating the house’s original look? It was fantastic! As I said, I just felt so at home. It was a wonderful job, and it just showed how well everyone did who worked on the project. I was really, really impressed. I felt like a child

The lounge. That was the family room, the place where everything happened. It was the hub of my home. The kitchen wasn’t really big enough to fit two of us in, so in our house we all congregated in the lounge. When I went in there I was touching everything. There were so many memories attached to so many things. It was amazing. Your mum came back with you. What did she make of the experience? I think my mum was just thrilled really. As I said, her memories in the house weren’t as rosy as mine. But she says that what the house represents for her is change and progress. It represents a time that she got herself together and really made something of herself. I really appreciate that time, because it really inspired me. When we got to that house I was about 6, and I was very aware of the things that my mum was doing professionally, to work her way up. I was there the day that she volunteered at the local play centre, and I saw her progress from a volunteer up to the manager. To me that was really inspirational. It showed determination, and determination that she’s definitely passed on to me, and I hope to pass on to my children.
Has it led to a change in your relationship with your dad? He’s been calling and texting quite a lot. In all honesty I’m very wary, and definitely afraid of rekindling that relationship, purely because I don’t really think I could deal with another upset like that, another let-down from him, so I think maybe it’s better that we don’t really speak. It’s unfortunate, but it’s definitely a fear of mine, and I’m not so sure I want to go there. I’m really grateful for the opportunity, but I’m really not so sure that I want to go back and have that relationship again. You talk in the programme about how not having a positive male role model affected your brothers. Explain a bit about that. It’s very easy for single mothers to say “we don’t need a man, we can manage without a man,” but you do have to think about the children. I think where my mum was concerned, because men had let her down so much, she just didn’t have men around us at all. But that had an adverse effect when my brothers became teenagers, and didn’t have that positive, consistent role model that would teach them how to be men. So because of that they found

JAMELIA again in there, I was so comfortable. What was life like in that house for you? It was the absolute best. It was a time of no problems, no worries, happiness, laughter, music and warmth. My childhood was the best. I’m sure you realise when watching the programme that things weren’t as rosy for my mum, but she was a true parent in the sense that she didn’t allow us to know about the struggles that she was going through at the time, in the same way that I don’t do that with my children. Living in that house was just a time in my life that was fantastic, and it was nice to have the opportunity to go back there, even if it as only for a couple of weeks. Which of the rooms brought back the strongest memories for you?
Visiting the house was clearly a very emotional experience for you. Were you prepared for that? Not at all. I’m not someone who’s happy to show my deepest, darkest emotions at all. But something about being back home in a place where I was comfortable, I actually felt okay to be emotional and to expose those inner feelings. When I was watching the film I thought “I want people to know that it doesn’t matter what you’ve been through.” Going back to that house really inspired me. I got emotional because I was comfortable, and it did bring back a lot of memories. Not having my dad around was definitely a big part of it. That was something that I’d never, ever dealt with. I’d always been like my mum, just carried on without him, not knowing it was a problem. To have the opportunity to speak with my dad, and to ask him questions that I wanted to ask, it was bound to bring out some emotion. It’s an incredibly powerful moment, watching you meet up with your dad for the first time in six years. How did that feel? It felt really different to what I’d expected. I thought I’d be angry, I thought I’d really look at him with disdain, but when he stepped into the room, I just felt “It’s my dad!” And as we were in the house, it was like I was a child again. It was that whole feeling of “Oh, my dad’s here.” But then I realised I’m not that little girl any more - so many years have passed since that time, and you have to answer my questions. It was a real emotional struggle, that whole conversation. I felt like a little girl, but I’m not a little girl. It was a really poignant thing to happen in that house.
those role models on the street, which is why they ended up going to prison and going down the wrong road. You take your own position as a role model incredibly seriously, don’t you? Absolutely, 100 per cent. Every single thing I do, I think about the effect that will have on people who are looking at me and paying attention to what I’m doing. I have my own little girls, I’ve got lots of young family members, I’m my granddad’s oldest grandchild. I’ve always taken it seriously. I take my position very, very seriously, I want to be a positive role model, I don’t want anyone to say “I don’t like that Jamelia, she’s not a good person, I don’t want my child to be like her. And what kind of lesson do you want viewers to take away from watching the film? Don’t let class, position, circumstances deter you from your dreams. And don’t look down on anyone, because you have no idea what that girl from the council estate is going to become. And I want parents to watch it and see how much of a difference they can make to their children. Mums and dads who are doing great, and also the ones that aren’t doing so great. It’s us who produce the adults of tomorrow, and it’s entirely up to us how they feel about themselves, how they see themselves, and what potential they think thy have. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION.
Ten years ago, the world was a very different place. David Cameron was just a jobbing PR for Carlton television, Madonna was just about to marry Guy Ritchie, and nobody had even heard of an iPhone. Into this strange and alien place, a new TV programme came blinking into the world. Location, Location, Location had arrived.
This December Channel 4 will mark the tenth anniversary of this momentous first broadcast, with an evening of three one-off property-themed programmes. Here, presenter Kirstie Allsopp looks back at the decade that saw her welcomed into the nation’s living rooms, and wonders “Where did it all go right?”
You’ve got an evening of programmes coming up to mark the 10th anniversary of Location, Location, Location. Did you ever envisage that the series would run for so long and become such a phenomenon? There’s a simple one word answer for that. “No.” Absolutely not. It all came about very gradually. We had lunch with someone who asked us “How do you think you should approach doing a TV show about property?” and then we had another lunch, and they said “We’re going to make this pilot, do you want to be a part of that?” And Phil and I met, and we got on really well, and we made the pilot. And we assumed that they were then going to find real television presenters to present the show, and when it was commissioned with me and Phil presenting it, we were very surprised. And we decided that it was good money, and we were both self-employed,
so we’d do it at the weekends. We decided we couldn’t possibly film it during the week, as we had proper work to do. And it just sort of went from there. I sometimes feel like I’m still on the lookout for proper work. So the idea of it having been going for ten years is extraordinary. There are three programmes going out to mark the anniversary. One of them is a retrospective, looking back at four house buyers who you featured over the years. Having made so many programmes, how did you settle on which four to feature? Luckily, I wasn’t involved in that decision, because I would have really, really struggled. Obviously there’s a percentage of people who would go “Are you kidding, I never want to see those two again as long as I live.” And then there are people who have moved on from the houses they
bought. But we’ve got an extraordinarily good strike rate - the number of times we actually get houses for people is very high, and we’ve also got a very good track record in that we’re way below the national statistics on divorce. Remarkably few of the couples who have come on the show have subsequently separated. Do you think that’s because you’ve brought such joy to their lives by getting them the right house? It would be nice to think that, wouldn’t it? I think I’ll back off from making a claim like that, though! I think it’s maybe something to do with the vetting process - we’re looking for people who are committed to buying together. And being serious about a purchase, and thinking about what you want for the rest of your life, really does test your relationship.

Do the four tales that you’re revisiting sum up what’s happened on the show, and in property, over the ten years? To an extent I think they do. Property comes up and goes down. A lot of people don’t quite understand what a rollercoaster ride one is always on with property. And there isn’t such a thing as a national house price, everything is linked to what’s going on in your local area. But it’s not just a story about property over ten years - you have to bear in mind that a lot of the show is about analysing people and their emotions and what makes them tick and what makes people pick the houses that they pick. What do you think you’ve learned in the ten years that you’ve been making the programme? That it’s not about the house. People’s decisions are based on so many other things - you have to understand what’s going on in people’s lives before you can find them the right house. The last ten years has also been pretty momentous for you, hasn’t it? Yes, there’s been a lot packed into the last ten years. When I started doing this show I was single, I’m now a stepmother to two, I’ve also got two sons, I live between Devon and London, I work on Locations, Relocations, Kirstie’s Homemade Home, Phil and Kirstie’s Perfect Christmas. You’ve also filmed a special Location, Location, Location for servicemen. Explain a little more about that. We had three different couples, all of whom were service families, some of whom were leaving the services, others of whom were buying a property while still working in the armed forces. We had one young man who lost his legs in a roadside bomb in Afghanistan in October 2009. I’m so full of admiration for him and his partner, they are so brave. He said “We’re not going to have a bungalow. We had our dream of a house before I lost my legs, and we are going to buy that house.” So we were under strict instructions not to show bungalows. But we did find a barn conversion that was all on one level and great for a wheelchair, and super cool. And we also showed him a house that was
exactly what he said he wanted – listed, thatched, historic, absolutely amazing. And I said to him “So what do you think?” And he said “I think the barn conversion would be the coward’s choice.” And about 20 minutes before, we’d been talking off camera about his comrades who had lost their lives or lost limbs, so I was already slightly wobbly, and then when he said this, I just lost it. You just can’t describe how much courage and optimism he had. It sounds incredibly moving. It was. But there were also some lighter moments. I can tell this story because he thought it was so funny. We have a lovely researcher who was calling up to find
What else do we see? There will be a look at some of the outfits I’ve worn over the years. Some of them are dodgy. Fashions change – the hair goes up and down, the heels go up and down. Fashions change – what can I say? Who has been more gaffe prone over the years, you or Phil? ME! There was a famous one where we had this brilliant, gorgeous lesbian couple, who everyone was raving about – not very edifying male fantasies – and I was sitting there, we were all having a glass of wine at the end of the show, and I said “Right, stop beating around the bush, let’s make an offer for this flat.” And nobody said anything, it was only when it came out on the telly that people said

I don’t swear a lot, but you do get incredibly stressed on shoots. people to come on the show, and they spoke, and at the end she said “We’re going to find a house that’s going to blow your socks off!” She felt horrendous! Of course he made jokes like that the whole time. But she just got off the phone and felt terrible. She felt sick. But he was just incredible – they all were, on that show. It was really a wonderful thing to be able to do. When you’ve been involved in finding a house for somebody like that – and it’s a cliché, but things are often clichés because they’re true – it’s properly humbling. So it’s quite a variety of shows to mark the anniversary – there’s the show looking back over the ten years, there’s the armed forces show, and then we’ve got a “funnies” show as well. The funnies show needs to come with a health warning. Which is? In ten years, you do build up a few “fucks”. I don’t swear a lot, but you do get incredibly stressed on shoots. You’re doing something and it’s really important that you get it right, and you get it wrong, then you do go “Oh fuck!” And it’s on record. So if you’re doing a half-hour funny show, you’ve got quite a few of them. So it’s going out after the watershed.
“Did she really just say that?” That is what happens to me.
Looking back over ten years of Location, Location, Location, what have been the high points for you? I think finding homes for people who really needed help to find them, and really loved what we found. Those are real high spots. As a personal thing, being mentioned on The Archers. Location, Location, location, or Phil and I, have been mentioned on The Royle Family, Corrie, EastEnders, Emmerdale, and The Archers. That is quite extraordinary. A night of programmes dedicated to Location, Location, Location’s 10th anniversary will tale place on Channel 4 on Thursday 30th December from 7:10pm

The Merchant Couture Wedding Show The Merchant hotel in Belfast is the new next big thing in wedding venues although a city centre venue, the art deco inspired decoration and very high standard of customer service transports you somehow to a feeling of being in residence at a stately home or palace fit for a queen – and we should know!! On the 7th November the Merchant Couture Wedding show hosted the Crème de la Crème of wedding suppliers including the likes of Wayne Pollock travel, Blue moon event design and the Vanilla cake company to name but a few!! But never mind that you want to know about the fashion don’t you well if we dropped the names of Vera Wang, Oscar De Larenta, Christian Louboutin, Christian Lacroix, Valentino and Ian Stuart into the mix would you be impressed? Well we are and they were!! Quaywest Definitely one of the cities busiest restaurants; Quaywest is packing them in on a nightly basis with the allure of a 30% discount ongoing off food and drink. It was high time Pure took a visit to see exactly why the crowds flock there week on week. Being a cold and stormy night in October, myself and two partners set course to Quaywest and on arrival the restaurant was busy and pretty much filled with guests on every table. Luckily we avoided the queues and before long were seated upstairs over the balcony, our waitress was fast, efficient and obviously under pressure with the teams of people dining in the restaurant. We chose a bottle of Matua Sauvignon blanc and made our decisions on the menu. To be honest the menu choice is pretty good – a nice array of meat, fish and vegetarian options to chose from and really something for every taste. For starters we decided on soup of the day, beef nachos and some capped mushrooms. The starters were pretty basic but exactly what was advertised, tasty and presented in a clean and fresh manner.
Pork En Croute. My colleges enjoyed their mains thoroughly and I enjoyed the Pork equally. The portions are large and the side dishes are pretty decent – so much so, we all finished feeling satisfied and with some left over on our plates. For desert we moved onto Pavlova, Summerfruit delight and the cheesecake – again nice big portions and a great accompaniment to cleanse the taste buds after our meal. In all we had a very pleasant evening. The food was really nice, service satisfactory and with a promotion like 30% off food and drink – there most certainly was no complaints from our table.

Da Vincis Da Vinci’s is one of the cities longest established restaurants; situated along the Culmore Road it is a firm favourite with many for a sociable drink or a relaxing bite at the weekend. Over the years the complex has earned its right as one of the premier nightspots at weekends and with news of a new restaurant menu, Pure took a trip down to taste flavours. Da Vinci’s restaurant has always been renowned for good honest food, served in a traditional setting and suitable for all ages and occasions; personally I’ve celebrated many a family occasion here, as I’m sure many of our readers have also. It’s the sort of place like the Cheers bar with the famous theme song lyrics … “Where everybody knows your name, and they’re always glad you came”. So, after a hard week at the office, my partner and I set off to Da Vinci’s to sample the delights of the new menu … One good thing about the menu was that it was clean, simple and so easy to chose from. No one needs a complicated choice when dinging out and another nice touch was that the restaurant was trailing out a new nifty piece of equipment that I loved! Each table was presented with a small call bell which alerted the waiting team to your attention anytime you need assistance – perfect if your like me – indecisive! We were seated within minutes, presented with our menus and shortly after, our drinks poured
into our glasses and a selection of breads and dips presented to nibble on – perfect service! The waiting staff are really friendly and they really look after your every need. Under their advise we chose from their recommendation for wine ‘The Stoneleigh New Zealand Marlborough sauvignon blanc’ which went down a treat at our table – a really tasty, light and fruity wine. The menu has a nice selection of mains dishes to chose from but I knew my selection from the start. I chose the monkfish thai green curry served on a bed of balsamic rice and my partner decided on a 10oz sirloin steak with a bacon and cheese topping along with garlic potatoes on the side.

My monkfish curry was delightful; cooked to perfected and evenly seasoned and I was really impressed with the sauce as sometimes some restaurants don’t get this right. My partner’s steak was equally as nice and tasty and they commented on how juicy the meat was with the bacon and cheese topping. For desert we chose the blood-orange cheesecake and a piece of seasoned berry tart; both came in very generous portions and were filled with sweet flavours – an excellent way to cleanse the palette. To summarise the evening in three words … Relaxing, Scrumptious and Amazing Value!
