PUBLISHERS’ MESSAGE Welcome to the July edition of Pure magazine! We’re still nursing hangovers after our big win at the CIPR Press and Broadcast Awards in Belfast recently. Being awarded overall category winner for Magazine/Supplement of the Year is a massive achievement for our small team and we want to thank you all for your warm messages of congratulations. Well done as well to our fellow Derry publication the Derry News for winning Weekly Newspaper of the Year. We’re delighted to be bringing you one of our most glamorous editions ever, with (as promised) a fabulous interview with Ms Carrie Bradshaw herself, Sarah Jessica Parker! We’ve been to see the fabulous SATC 2 several times already, and never tire of the hilarious antics of Carrie and her gals.
Those of you who attended our gala SATC 2 premiere on opening night deserve the highest praise. We were overwhelmed by how stunning all our guests looked (male and female!) and the night was a great success. We had a snapper on call for the event, so check out our picture special to see all the style goddesses in their best frocks! In addition to the joys of SATC, we have a wealth of fantastic interviews and features to keep you entertained. Our editor Mary-Anne had the pleasure of talking to former Destiny’s Child member and current solo diva Kelly Rowland about her latest album, while rising rapper/ singer Example also dropped by for a chat. As you all know, Derry’s bid for the City of Culture 2013 has been sent off to the judging
panel, and Pure would like to congratulate the bid team at Derry City Council and everyone in the city who has done their bit to try and make the dream a reality. We’re all on tenterhooks now awaiting the outcome (due mid July), but we’re convinced our proud and vibrant city stands a brilliant chance of success. As usual, the mag is packed to the gills with superb competition prizes, so turn to page 51 (as if we need to tell you that by now!) and check out all the goodies up for grabs this month. And, as ever, please take the time to check out what our advertisers have to offer, as without them, we wouldn’t exist! Happy July, readers! Love David & Sinead

are Pure wins Magazine of the Year at top industry awards event The CIPR Press and Broadcast Awards were held in the magnificent banqueting hall of the Europa Hotel in Belfast recently, and there was no louder table than Pure’s when we were named Magazine of the Year. The icing on the cake, though, was when we were then announced overall winners of the best magazine/supplement category! We’re absolutely thrilled that our small team was able to take on the big Belfast publications and bring this award back home to Derry. The CIPR Awards are the last word when it comes to recognition of excellence in the press and broadcast industry in Northern Ireland, so we are both humbled and profoundly proud that the committee of top class judges considered our independently-run magazine worthy of such a great accolade. One pick up this magazine has always been the driving force behind Pure since we launched our first edition in August 2009, so when the judges praised our commitment to delivering exclusive interviews, entertaining features and first rate design, we were all overjoyed at their comments. The past few years have been financially challenging for most of us and will no doubt continue to be so, and in that context our aim has always been to produce a magazine that brings a little joy into people’s lives and a smile to their faces. Thanks again for all your phone calls, emails and message of support on our Facebook page. Your response to our success has been overwhelming, and has encouraged us to strive to make Pure even better in the year ahead!

‘Carrie’s been married for a short amount of time, and she’s not quite wearing it as comfortably as she wants to be’
Hi Sarah. The new film looks fantastic. Why did you want to do another one?
What’s it been like getting back together with the girls?
I think it’s a very good question; why come back and do another one? Doing a second movie, it’s not necessary; it wasn’t required, and because we were in a position to choose, it really made us be that much more thoughtful and really take it seriously because we ask so much of everybody who participates in this particular beast. It’s just a Herculean task. And along with that comes wonderful challenges and we love it, but it’s big and it’s hard to describe why unless you’re in the thick of it, but we’re all there because we want to be.
Well, I think what was interesting about this experience for me - I can’t speak for the rest of the women, but I can to the degree that we noted it and talked about it - is that we‘ve never had a chance to live together before. We were all removed from the most important people in our lives. We were all taken away from friends, family, children, husbands, boyfriends, girlfriends, wives, the extended family, the extended family that is ours as grown-ups. When we first got to Morocco (which doubles as Abu Dhabi in the movie) we were all in the same hotel. We literally lived together and it was amazing. I think it’s the best time we ever had as
The production values, as usual, are top notch… The series was a big effort every week, I think much more so than people probably realise because we shot on film in New York City almost entirely on location with big scenes and scripts. With the first movie, while we were actually outside more in New York than in this film, it was a far more interior narrative because it was about what it means to be an adult and how one deals with disappointment and friendship and love, and all the sort of internal thoughts we have as grownup people. But this movie is really a romp. It should be a caper, so it’s big. There are massive amounts of travel and it’s very cinematic and it’s big shots and costumes and hundreds and hundreds of background players and all sorts of backgrounds, literally.
a group because we knew intimately what our experiences were. We weren’t working and then going home to the people I just mentioned. We were going home to each other and I think it was the best thing in the world for us. It was the best time we’ve ever had. SATC is a global phenomenon, with legions of adoring fans. What does it feel like to be part of such a huge success story? It’s very moving to be part of something that people have connected with and that people have strong feelings about. That people are warm and excited about Miranda’s life or Charlotte or Samantha or Carrie, is remarkable, it really is. That will never happen again in my life and I’m cognizant of it all the time. What’s happening with the lives of the four main characters in this film?
You’ve got male: SJP with co-stars Chris Noth (left) and Willie Garson.
It’s two years after the end of the first film and, as we know, Carrie is married to the love of her life, the man she has spent most of her adult life pursuing, and all the women, at this point in their lives, seem to have found some kind of contentment that is mostly, I think, what they thought they wanted. But what you discover is that Charlotte is conflicted about what it means to be a good mother and a stay-at-home mother and how she feels about herself in relation to her own sexuality and how her husband might look at her. And, of course, Miranda is wondering where she is professionally and what she really wants and what’s most important to her in terms of being a
mother and a well thought of, respected attorney. And Samantha is really dealing with the idea of aging and what it means to her and what she wants it to mean and how she wants to feel about it versus how she feels about it. As for Carrie, she’s written a book about marriage. It’s called I Do, Do I? and it’s a book on her experiences of marriage these first couple of years. What brings everyone to the exotic and fabulous Abu Dhabi? Samantha invites the rest of the girls to an allexpenses-paid trip to Abu Dhabi. Charlotte is worried to leave her husband for some interesting reasons; Miranda is like, ‘Count me in. I’m there.’ And Carrie is really happy to go because she would rather be out of the country when her book comes out and is reviewed, so they get on a plane and they head to Abu Dhabi. The location shoot in Morocco looks amazing. How was it? The whole Moroccan experience was incredible. It’s very curious to me because it was really, really hard work and long days. But, being there, and seeing what we were seeing, and to be shooting in the Sahara desert in those dunes, which seemed untouched, was stupendous. It was crazy. But what wasn’t captured on film was the drive between wrap in the evenings. We were losing the light around four-thirty, five. You get undressed, you get in a van, you head back to your hotel and the drive was a pretty long drive. There was no road. We just took a path and it was just twilight, dusk, magic hour and then going through until almost dark and seeing things on that drive from the dunes to our hotel, I can’t even describe it to people because it’s as far away as you’ll ever feel from home. What are your two male co-stars, Chris Noth and John Corbett, like to work with?
while flattering, it’s a complicated relationship for him, but I’m so grateful to Chris. And John Corbett, words cannot describe the incredibly special and gifted person that he is. I just think he’s one of the great actors. There’s ease to his work and maybe people think therefore that it comes to him really easily, but he works as hard as anybody. And the pressure of coming back, having been absent from the show for eight or nine years, and having two days of work and hitting the ball out of the park every scene, it’s too much. All the fashionistas out there will be salivating at the style in the film. Apparently there are so many clothes they’re kept in a huge warehouse?
Hunky: Carrie has a ‘moment’ with former beau Aidan in the new movie.
Chris is just, you can’t know him. It’s the great privilege for me of knowing him that I know you can’t know him and what it takes and how much he has turned over to me and how he’s really let me in. He counts on me and I count on him and I think he really trusts me and I completely trust him. I really don’t believe that anybody could have played this part but Chris Noth and it’s a burden for him sometimes. I mean, to spend your days walking down the street and people shouting, ‘Hey, Mr. Big!’ at you,
the focus has shifted… Carrie has spent her entire career writing about being single and for the first time she’s writing about a different topic. And the truth is she doesn’t know a lot about being married because she has been married for a very short amount of time, and she’s not quite wearing it as comfortably as she wants to be. She’s able to intellectualize it, but emotionally, I think, she’s not actually where she wants to be in a marriage, which is dealing with the conventions of it and really being able to say, ‘I feel good about the expectations of my partner and myself.’ It really becomes, for Carrie, a story about, ‘Yes, I had a wedding, but am I married?’ and I think at the end of the movie she answers that question.
Everybody should know that that room didn’t start off like that. That room has morphed over the last 12, 13 years into some kind of alternate universe. When we started doing the series, we had a budget, I think, of about ten thousand dollars an episode, for everybody – and I mean everybody. And what’s really important to know about that number is that nobody would loan us a thing. We couldn’t get anybody to loan us a sock for 24 hours! And that’s what was so incredible about Pat (Patricia Field, legendary SATC stylist). She was so industrious and smart and creative and she always has been and that’s why I wanted her to design the show, because I knew she would see New York the way New York really was at that time. But the use of vintage was a big part of Carrie’s wardrobe, which really established who she was in a lot of ways. And part of it was just a necessity, but it was also a design choice, so to arrive where we are today or were six or seven months ago when we started prep for this movie, there is a room, an industrial floor, that’s three thousand or four thousand square feet, with hundreds, literally hundreds, of racks of clothes of every important and emerging designer in the world in the room. Then you have a massive room that is only shoes, a room that is only fine jewellery, a whole other section just for bags. I mean, it’s just bizarre. Carrie spent the majority of the TV series writing about being single, but in the new film

This was truly a refreshing and sparkling fashion-fix courtesy of Appletiser, whose popular StyleFIX fashion show series arrived to a huge and enthusiastic audience in Derry. Chic models strutted down the catwalk showcasing a variety of trends such as military chic, pretty pastels and double denim - a fashion must this summer. Also making an appearance on the catwalks were boudoir-inspired lace, sheer fabrics and citrus brights, and top cosmetics teams treated audience members to make up tips and beauty know-how. As well as free advice from experts, audience members at the show enjoyed complimentary Appletiser – delicious. This was a great boost for shoppers in the city, so please can we have more shows like this!

The magic of Miranda With the magic of SATC 2 currently lighting up our screens, we’ll all be looking for that added bit of glamour, because who knows, ladies, Mr Big could be just round the corner! This month, I’m turning my attention to SATC favourite Miranda Hobbs (played by Cynthia Nixon) as an example of how pale skin can be super stylish and sexy. Girls with this colouring can sometimes struggle to get make-up to suit, but can I just say Girls Aloud’s Nicola Roberts didn’t have to bring out her own make up range as bareMinerals caters for alabaster skin really well!
SJP NYC prices start at £14 (15ml) The latest release from Sarah Jessica Parker is a tie-in with the new movie and meant to reflect the personality of her character, Carrie Bradshaw. This strawberry-tinged scent is extremely sweet, but there’s a nice musky base to undercut it. It may be too fruity for some, but for many it will be the vibrant and fun fragrance that signifies their summer.
Benefit Bathina ‘take a picture... it lasts longer’ Body Balm £22.50 Fans of Benefit’s original Bathina will love this upgraded version. They’ve tweaked the shimmer from a silvery pink to a warm golden glow, a shade that will probably suit more skin tones. If you’re planning on flashing a bit of flesh this summer, then this sweet-smelling balm will have you shimmering like a Greek goddess!
Natio Skincare Traveller Kit £6.50 Australian skincare and beauty line Natio is the latest brand to hit the Debenhams shelves. This handy travel kit will also help you look you best on holiday this summer, as it meets airline travel requirements. Containing cleaner, toner, moisturiser and hand cream, Natio prides itself on its use of natural herbal ingredients, and we have to say the products in this kit had a lovely gentle effect on the skin.
Here’s how to achieve the perfect dramatic look: Face For an even and fresh skin tone, buff fairly light foundation all over your face, then apply illuminating mineral veil. This will lock in and seal your minerals giving you a flawless complexion. Eyes Use prime time for the eyelids, then dampen your shadow brush and apply a small amount black emerald shadow on your eye lid. Then brush just above your eye socket and blend in small circular movements just above the crease until even. Apply intense, big and bright lining pencil along the inner rim of your eye to give added sexiness. Then finish with big tease mascara to get that flirty lash! Brows Defining your eyebrows is just as important as your eyeliner or blusher. Try and think of your eyebrows as the frame and your face as the picture. Use medium brown brow shadow to fill in your brows and seal with bareMinerals clear mascara. Cheeks and Lips
Natio Extreme Volume Smudge Proof Mascara
As the main focus is the smoky eye, we want to keep the cheeks and lips simple but still defined, so apply blusher in hint over your cheeks. For the lips we want a real high shine gloss that will last long after cocktail hour is over, so trixie is the shade of pale pink, slightly shimmery buxom babe you want. The only thing left now to complete your Miranda look, ladies, is a shaken but not stirred cosmopolitan in your hand!
£8
Ask Naomi
As the £8 price tag suggests, this Natio product is highly affordable, but is it good value for money? Well, it goes on really cleanly and there’s no hint of a smudge. Volume-wise, the effect maybe isn’t dramatic as other mascaras out there, but if you prefer a more subtle look, this will be right up your street.
Q Naomi, I waste half my night out stuck in the toilets reapplying lipstick. No sooner do I take a sip of wine than my lips are all but bare. What can I do to ensure my lippy stays on all night? Sarah, Limavady A. Sarah, start by rubbing an old toothbrush over your lips to exfoliate and leave the skin soft and smooth. Then apply concealer, as this will give your lippy something to hold on to. Finally, apply your lipstick and liner - save the liner to last as this will add a touch of freshness and keep you smiling all the way home!

Designer Focus Halston Heritage The very name Halston conjures up images of old school Studio 54 glamour featuring streamlined, simple designs in luxurious fabrics. With Sarah Jessica Parker recently named creative director and wearing several of the designs in the new film, the label is destined to experience a new injection of life with fans clamouring to purchase their timeless elegant pieces in this season’s summery palettes. Although slightly higher in price than most purses can stretch, it’s the eternal elegance of the designs and quality of the fabric that ensures that Halston pieces are investments in fashion rather than one-season showstoppers. Their striking range of vibrantly-coloured dresses are sure to carry through from season to season,

The real Charlotte She’s often overshadowed by her more colourful colleagues, but Charlotte York is Sex and the City’s hidden gem, argues Pure’s Aimear Lynch... Sex and the City portrays strong, independent women who do what they want and look fabulous doing it. Carrie’s the sassy writer, Miranda the feisty lawyer and Samantha a sexually promiscuous cougar. Then we have Charlotte. In both the TV show and the movies, Charlotte is something of a black sheep. With her privileged upbringing and enduring belief in true love, she represents the hopeless romantic in all of us. We all watched hopelessly as she fell for stuffy cardiologist Trey, then sympathised when he halfheartedly accepted her proposal with a lukewarm ‘Alrighty’. While her girlfriends ate, shopped and bedded half of Manhattan, Charlotte served as their moral compass, always following ‘the rules’ of dating. Her conservative nature in contrast with her friend’s libertine ways made for great comedic moments as she cringed her way through their ‘sexploits’. But beneath the “Park Avenue Pollyanna” facade, Charlotte was quite the saucy minx herself, and this exploration of her inner sex kitten made for hilarious viewing. When she quit her job to pursue her dream WASP lifestyle, she soon realised it wasn’t all it was
cracked up to be – a situation many women can identify with – but eventually found true love with divorce lawyer Harry. The pair shared some of the most moving storylines in the series, and embodied the real life difficulties many couples face. We are as elated as Charlotte when she falls pregnant and equally devastated when she suffers a miscarriage. Her profound pain is etched on her face, yet she somehow musters the strength to attend the first birthday party of Miranda’s son Brady; this is quite possibly one of the most moving scenes of the entire series, and a testament to Kristen Davis’ acting prowess. It makes her happiness all the sweeter, therefore, when the couple adopt a beautiful baby girl Lily and in the first film we see a new addition to the family. In the latest movie, Charlotte is faced once again with the difficulties involved in raising a family, but her humanity ultimately shines through. Intensely loyal and with her friend’s best interests at heart, Charlotte is a great addition to the foursome on screen. Plus, she totally rocks in Burberry – no easy task!

Ryan Melaugh takes to the skies to check out the latest aviation simulator...
Airport Control Simulator (PC, Iceberg Interactive)
Airport Control Simulator takes out the boring aspects of being an air traffic controller and leaves the fun challenge of guiding the planes to safety. Its addictive game play revolves around landing each plane onto the air strip while battling winds and difficult turns. This may seem a little simple at first, but as the game progresses through all 15 international airports, the difficulty is ramped up as you rush to guide an influx of high speed planes onto the tarmac. You begin in Moscow with a single runway and a single plane with the goal to rise through the ranks of your peers and graduate to working in some of the most prestigious of airports from Paris, Rome, London, New York, Tokyo and many more.
You’re given total control of the speed and height of the plane as you guide it onto the runway, but you’ll soon find that having five or more planes at once on screen can be difficult as you juggle the work between them. For those looking for a serious simulator, beware; this is an arcade game built solely for quick fun with little effort. One of the benefits of its simplistic graphics is the plain fact that it will work on most computers, and with a quick install and small 200Mb size, it’s clear this game was built for laptops and notebooks. Airport Control Simulator is game for when you’re on the go, be it train, car or plane. Who knows; you might even end up guiding yourself in to land.
OUT THIS MONTH Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Nintendo Wii) Bursting with new features and gameplay elements, there’s bound to be something for everyone in Mario’s latest adventure. Alpha Protocol (PC, PS3, XBOX) Third-person action adventure game revolving around the exploits of rookie spy Michael Thorton.
Mark Dalzell heads to Eakin Brothers in Campsie to take the Chevrolet Spark out for a spin
Chevrolet Spark Three years ago Chevrolet created three concepts for a city car and put them to a vote. The American public opted overwhelmingly for the Spark (or the ‘Beat’ as it was then called), and the design team went to work bringing it to life. This jaunty five-door may not be the biggest car in the world but, as the name suggests, it’s got bags of personality. I was given the metallic green top-of-therange model to test, and from its big bold lights to its playful contours, the Spark
seduced me immediately with its funky persona. The feelgood factor extends to the interior, which for a budget car has a nice, quirky and rather expensive-looking dashboard design - not bad for £9,845 on the road! The Spark has been tailor-made for the city, and I was able to nip around Derry city centre with ease as my eager ally responded promptly to my every touch. I then took a spin down the rural and windy Ardlough Road, and have to say I was impressed at the Spark’s taut suspension and ability to hug even the sharpest of bends. The only downside, perhaps, is that the engine gets a tad noisy once you hit the dual carriageway and speeds approaching 60, but a few raised notches on the volume button of the deluxe mp3ready stereo soon solved that problem. As you rise through the ranks of the various
models, the nifty features we boys love really begin to stack up. Sports grilles, silver-effect roof rails, 15” alloys, sports bumpers; all the aesthetically pleasing touches are here, and if you decide to opt for the range-topping model you’ll still have change out of ten grand. (Unless you go for metallic paint £365 extra). But with the basic model costing a mere £6,945, it’s no surprise the Spark is becoming increasingly popular with newly-qualified drivers
“as the name suggests, it’s got bags of personality” looking to get on the first rung of the car ownership ladder (though both the high seat and parking sensors are also a big draw for an older class of clientele). With such a nifty design having such an affordable price tag, we expect Sparks to fly...straight out of Eakin’s showroom!

GLASGOWBURY
Get ready for Glasgowbury Small but massive! The Pure team has been out shopping for tents and cosy sleeping bags in preparation for the Glasgowbury festival at Eagles Rock Valley, Draperstown, on July 24th. We attended last year’s event and it was an absolute blast, and we can’t wait to head up the Glenshane later this month to enjoy the craic once more at what will be the tenth anniversary of this innovative local music festival. The line-up this year is jaw-dropping, from the soon to be massive General Fiasco to Derry’s own Little Hooks and Wonder Villains. Also rocking up to the event will be Fighting With Wire, Duke Special, Paul Casey and loads more. Glasgowbury is billed as the small festival with the big heart, and this encapsulates the ethos of the event to a tee. Big festivals like Glastonbuty and Oxegen are great, but there’s something about the friendly and laid-back vibe of Glasgowbury that make it hugely enjoyable, and the organisers deserve the highest praise for giving music lovers from Derry and the North West access to such a fantastic musical experience. Tickets are available now from HMV, Richmond Centre and from number of independent retailers. Tickets are priced at £30 (festival only) and £40 (festival and two nights camping). For more info, see www.glasgowbury.com

With the ultimate prize at stake, the upcoming 2010 World Cup promises to have its fair share of controversy. Mary-Anne McNulty looks back at some notorious incidents that have gone down in World Cup history...
Ronaldo gets Rooney sent off 2006, Germany Wayne Rooney was stitched up good and proper by his Man Utd club mate Cristiano Ronaldo during England’s crunch quarter final match against Portugal. Roo reacted angrily to having his shirt pulled by Portugal’s Ricardo Carvalho by trodding on the defender’s groin during a tackle, prompting drama queen Ronaldo to pile in and feign outrage at
Rooney’s actions. The ref insisted Ronaldo’s histrionics didn’t influence his decision to send Rooney off, but the cocky midfielder’s knowing ‘mission accomplished’ wink to his home bench told its own tale. Deprived of their most valuable player for the majority of the game, England lost out on penalties after the game ended 0-0.
Disaster: Roo sees Red
And the Oscar goes to...Rivaldo 2002, Japan and Korea Brazilian playmaker Rivaldo disgraced himself in a group match against Turkey with a shocking display of play-acting that resulted in the sending off of Turkish defender Hakan Unsal. With the ball out of play, Unsal kicked it at Rivaldo as he stood by the corner flag. The ball hit the Brazilian midfielder’s thigh, but he
fell to the floor and clutched his head with an exaggerated flourish that would make even the world’s hammiest actor, Brian Blessed, cringe with embarrassment. Unsal was sent off for a second yellow card offence, but Rivaldo was later shown up for the cheat he was by the video evidence and fined £5,000 by FIFA.

Maradona gets divine help 1986, Mexico With emotions still raw in the aftermath of the Falklands War, this quarter final match between England and Argentina was always going to be a heated affair, but the infamous ‘hand of God’ goal poured fuel on the fire even more. Rushing in on lofty England ’keeper Peter Shilton to challenge for a high ball, pint-sized
attacking midfielder Maradona raised his left fist and appeared to punch the ball into the net. The Argentinians went on to win the match 2-1, and the whole of England went ballistic. Cheeky Maradona later admitted: “The goal was scored a little bit by the hand of God, a little by the head of Maradona.”
Maradona’s mischief put paid to England’s World Cup hopes
Zidane loses the rag 2006, Germany French captain Zinedine Zidane’s last ever game as a professional was clouded in shame after the midfielder head-butted Italy’s Marco Materazzi in the chest during the 2006 final. ‘Zizou’ was immediately sent for an early bath, leaving France with 10 men in the crucial final minutes of extra time and minus their star player for the consequent shoot-out that the

Tipped as one of this year’s best comedies, this charming caper features a winning performance from Russell Brand, reprising his role as the hilarious rocker Aldous Snow from director Nicholas Stoller’s previous hit Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Jonah Hill also shines as the idealistic talent scout whose job it is to get Snow to the Greek theatre in LA for the launch of his comeback tour. With the exception of a few bum notes, the gag factor is high in this well-paced and energetic comedy.
Death at a Funeral
Wild Target

(Starring: Rupert Grint, Emily Blunt)
This US reworking of the 2007 British black comedy is given a distinctly urban spin by director Neil LaBute. Chris Rock is ably supported by an excellent supporting cast in this wonderful screwball affair set in a family home during a funeral. The bad taste factor is high, but the laughs are plentiful.
Rupert ‘Ron Weasley’ Grint shrugs off his wizard robes to join Emily Blunt and Bill Nighy in this amusing British comedy. Nighy stars as a highly-strung assassin who spares the life of his intended target (Blunt), then ends up in an unlikely alliance with both her and Grint as they attempt to evade the murderous advances of the villainous Rupert Everett.

Delightful animated version of the classic fairytale set in the French Quarter of New Orleans. Disney have come up with great songs and, as usual, jokes that will have kids and adults chuckling.

What Came From Fire

Smoke & Mirrors
The Liverpool indie band, in the best tradition of the likes of Snow Patrol and Embrace, have gone seriously anthemic for this latest collection of heartfelt and emotionallycharged songs. The stadium-friendly ‘Architects’ rocks, and with big choruses and a big sound all round, this album could be the one that propels Sound of Guns to the very top of their field.
British rapper/singer Example has brought in the cream of the UK’s producing talent on this album, and the quality shines through. The result is an exhilarating slice of bouncy electro-pop, plus a few nice little ballads that show off his deeper side. With UK rap at last getting the attention it merits, Example is a welcome addition to the likes of Plan B, Dizzee Rascal and the rest.
Derry native John Deery’s latest release is a collection of beautifully crafted songs oozing with musical and lyrical confidence. Produced by acclaimed Irish producer David Odlum, Smoke & Mirrors combines upbeat, bluesey numbers with some achingly beautiful ballads. A little gem from one of the city’s finest talents.
Stand-out tracks: ‘Golden Soul’, ‘Carry Me Home’

The New Jersey indie rockers’ sequel to the ’59 Sound is a soulful, guitar driven collection that bears strong comparison to both Bruce Springsteen and The Clash. Lead singer Brian Fallon’s raw vocals are bursting with confidence and emotion. Stand-out tracks: ‘Bring It On’, ‘Orphans’
The Geordie indie rockers have delivered an exciting debut album that blends stirring guitar riffs, booming drums and raw lyrics to superb effect. There are hints of Velvet Underground and Gomez here, but the overall sound is as unique as it is magnetic. Stand-out tracks: ‘Prophecy’, ‘Kiss The Sun’

The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner (hardback) Stephenie Meyer The biggest selling author of the last two years brings us a companion piece to the phenomenally successful Twilight series. This novella is told from the perspective of Bree Tanner, a newborn vampire who readers first met in Meyer’s third novel, Eclipse. Nobody combines danger, mystery and romance quite like Meyer, and this tale of
the newborn vampire army’s journey as they prepare to close in on Bella Swan and the Cullens is bound to thrill hardcore fans. Although Bree’s story can work as a standalone piece, there are certain elements which rely on the reader’s familiarity with the existing Twilight books, so if you’re a Meyer novice it’s advised you get acquainted with her earlier stuff before you sit down to this.

Jennifer Johnston
This animated storybook, brought out ahead of the release of the third Toy Story movie, is cute as a button, and a must-have for children under ten. The illustrations, as you’d expect from the design wizards at Pixar, are stunning, while the latest tale of Woody, Buzz and the gang as they face an uncertain future now that teenager Andy is leaving for college, is funny and moving in equal parts.
Renowned novelist and famous Derry resident Jennifer Johnston’s latest novel is, at 152 pages, quite a slender read, but there’s still plenty of her trademark insight and stylish economic style to enjoy. London journalist Caroline visits Dublin to interview reclusive literary giant Desmond Fitzmaurice, where she becomes immersed in the author’s complicated and mysterious personal life.

CELEBRITY INTERVIEW
Kelly Rowland
Mary-Anne McNulty talks to pop sensation Kelly Rowland on fame, her new material and life after Destiny’s Child... As one third of the global pop phenomenon that was Destiny’s Child, Kelly Rowland has lived a fair share of her life in the limelight. Destiny’s Child, the sassy and confident trio of independent women made up of Rowland, Beyonce Knowles and Michelle Williams, stormed the charts on both sides of the Atlantic in the late 90s/early 00s with smash singles such as ‘Bills, Bills, Bills’, ‘Say My Name’ and ‘Survivor’, to name a few. But while Beyonce has gone on to achieve superstardom as a solo recording artist, Rowland’s journey has been slightly more low key. Her albums Simply Deep and Ms Kelly were big sellers, but it was as a result of her collaboration with acclaimed French DJ David Guetta on the smash hit ‘When Love Takes Over’ in 2009 that
she really started to emerge as a huge solo star in her own right. Her latest single, ‘Commander’, is another collaboration with Guetta, and showcases Rowland’s versatility, vocal superiority and general va va voom. When we get together to talk, Rowland’s mood is upbeat, and she exudes an open and relaxed air, despite the fact that she’s been on the go, she tells me, since daybreak. As you’d expect from a Southern belle (she was born in Georgia and grew up in Texas), her manners are impeccable, and she’s really down to earth for someone who lives in a world where diva-like tantrums are not only tolerated, but expected. So without further ado, I give you the one and only Ms Kelly...
Hi Kelly. Your full name’s Kelendria; where did that come from?
You turn 30 next year. What is the most important thing you’ve learned over the past ten years?
My mother thought of the name. When she pushed me out I guess she decided I was a Kelendria!
(Laughs) I’m far from that day at the minute, thank you very much! It’s so crazy, I’ve grown up in a world where everything has to be pleasing to everyone and the one thing I’ve learned over the past few years is that I need to be happy and please myself.
You have a new album coming out. What’s it called? I’ve yet to think of a title for the album; it’s the hardest thing. It isn’t quite complete. There are one or two more tracks to be finalised, so hopefully I’ll get some inspiration for the title by then! The vibe of this album is me feeling like I’ve finally come into my own. I started working on it 18 months ago and I remember thinking to myself ‘Kelly, be sure to have fun doing this’. I didn’t want to put a timeline on it, so I’m still recording more songs, and I’m not putting pressure on myself. Your collaboration with David Guetta on ‘When Love Takes Over’ was a massive hit over here. How are you enjoying life as a solo artist? The reception from fans over the past few years has been amazing. I’ve done quite a lot of live performances of my new single ‘Commander’ and the fans are singing along with me. They know it, they know all my other stuff, and that’s a great feeling. Obviously you’re best known as a member of the phenomenally successful girl group Destiny’s Child. What were the high and low points of having such huge success? In any and everything we do there are good and bad points. The best thing was that I had the opportunity to do what I love to do and travelled the world with Beyonce and Michelle, who I consider my sisters. To be honest with you, there weren’t really any low points. If I had one regret it would be that we travelled to some of the most amazing places in the world but didn’t really get to explore them because we were so busy performing.
“My mom said ‘Kelly, you just got your gift from God’, and I truly believe that”
You’ve founded a charity called ‘I Heart My GirIfriends’ a support system for teenage girls. What made you do that? I thought about myself as a kid, and remember thinking that I really would have benefitted from an outlet where females could support each other and feel secure within themselves. Whether you want to be a singer, dancer, journalist, doctor or whatever, you can be, and I Heart My Girlfriends was created to inspire, empower and uplift young women. We’ve got an educational programme in place and are starting up camps where girls can learn from each other.
“As women we always seem to be sizing each other up, and I find that ridiculous” So you don’t buy the theory that woman have to be especially ruthless to be successful? Absolutely not. As women we always seem to be sizing each other up, and I find that ridiculous. We should have each other’s backs and do all we can to empower one another. Do you keep in touch with the girls from Destiny’s Child? Oh yeah. They’re my sisters, period. I love them, I love talking to them, and I’m behind them 100 percent in everything they do. Your last album was called Ms Kelly. Any plans to become a ‘Mrs’? As of right now there are no plans to become ‘Mrs’ anybody! I’m just enjoying being Ms Kelly, being myself, and doing what I love to do.
You and Beyonce go way back, having been childhood friends in Houston, Texas. What was your relationship like in those days? We were just like your average kids, you know? Obviously music was a big part of our world and we had a lot of fun hanging out, singing and dancing. Were you nervous about the direction your career would take after Destiny’s Child came to an end? After we had so much success together you just want to continue on from that, but you never know what life holds, so I’m in a place right now where I’m finally not afraid of what might happen and enjoy it. I loved being in Destiny’s Child and I love being Kelly. Do you come from a musical background? I don’t really come from a musical family. My aunt sang a little bit, but that was about it. My mom always said ‘Kelly, you just got your gift from God’, and I truly believe that. Your solo output has still retained an urban flavour, but there’s also a very strong European dance influence. How is that style going down in the States? People here are becoming much more receptive to that Euro, electro vibe, and I think the success over here of people like David Guetta, Akon and Lady Gaga has been a contributing factor to the rise of that genre’s popularity in the States. Beyonce’s collaboration with Lady Gaga on ‘Telephone’ was a smash hit. Is there anyone you’d like to hook up with? Right now I would love to collaborate with Fergie. Like me, she loves big vocals, and I have huge respect for her as a performing artist. I’ve asked her about the possibility of us doing something together, so we’ll have to wait and see!
What’s next for Kelly? Well, right now, it’s all about the new single, ‘Commander’, and getting the album finished. There are some amazing songs on it, and the talented people I’ve been blessed enough to work with is unbelievable; the list just goes on and on. But the biggest thing for me is that I’ve come into my own; I’m very excited about where I’m at right now.
Kelly’s new single Commander’ is out now.

Sinead says...
“I’ve been a Shiseido disciple for many years now, and the reason is simple: the quality of their product is superb. I have quite sensitive skin and have found other brands quite harsh on my face, but with Shiseido my skin feels pampered and rejuvenated. Whether I want to give my eyes a little pick-me-up or use an exfoliator that is effective but doesn’t feel like sandpaper, Shiseido has the perfect product. Below are just some of the products that I consider essential items for my bathroom shelf and make-up bag...”

Day Moisture Protection SPF 15, £32.03
Bio Performance Super Corrective Serum, £89.90
This UV-shielding moisturizer is an absolute essential heading into the summer, when even 15 minutes in the sun can leave my skin dried out and itchy. Nice and gentle for daily use, but resilient enough to battle the sun’s harmful rays.
This serum is pricey for sure, but it truly is a magic potion: after just one application my lines become less visible, and in about a week the firmness of my skin is unbelievably improved. It gives my face an evenness that means I often don’t bother with foundation during the summer months.
Hydro-Nourishing Softener, £23.53 The visible effects of this dual-action hydrating and exfoliating lotion are always instant: I make sure to use this when my skin is looking a little dull or tired, because within seconds my face takes on a velvety soft and radiant glow. And– as always with Shiseido – a little goes a long way.
Perfect Rouge Tender Sheer, £19.92 I adore this product. It’s so sleek and smooth, and adds a dash of colour on casual days when I don’t fancy the full-on ‘lipsticky’ effect. It’s got loads of moisture in it so my lips never feel chapped and the nice sheen means there’s no need for lip gloss.
Shiseido Zen Eau de Parfum 2010, £45 This limited edition scent is gorgeous. I’m a big fan of perfumes with a punchy oriental signature, and nobody does this better than Shiseido – they’re a Japanese company after all! The stand-out aromas in this are orange, rose and lotus flower, and I have to say I am currently smelling particularly yummy!

d Sinead Melaugh explain why they’re the giant’s biggest fans...
“Shiseido is one of the biggest companies in the world, but there are times when I genuinely believe their 1000-strong research team have worked personally on my behalf to come up with products that are specifically designed for my skin. My complexion suffers from multiple personality disorder: one day it’s really greasy and oily, the next it’s dry as a bone, but whatever mood it’s in, there’s a Shiseido product in my bag of tricks to take it on! I’m a Shiseido man from top to toe, so read on for some of my top tips...”
Shiseido Men Moisturising Emulsion, £27.03 I’ve had more than a few dry skin days, and struggled to find an effective moisturiser. Then I discovered this a few years ago and couldn’t believe how good and long-lasting it was. Moisture is the cornerstone of a good complexion, and all my friends and family have commented on how much my skin has improved in the last two years.
Shiseido Men Energising Formula, £27.03 I always apply this after shaving to give my face a spruced-up look. The cool gel is very soothing and has a light moisturising effect, while the special defence formula provides added protection against the elements.
Zen for Men Shower Gel, £26.70 I’m not really a morning person but I burst out of the shower doing karate kicks thanks to this really invigorating gel. It has an amazing smell too, and gives my hair a great shine.
Zen for Men Aftershave, £43.41 (50ml) This popular scent doesn’t really need much of an endorsement from me, as its reputation as one of the classiest aftershaves on the market speaks for itself. The woody-aromatic notes in this are subtle enough for daytime use but sophisticated enough for a romantic evening.
Shiseido Men Deep Cleansing Scrub, £17.02 My skin is transformed after using this effective but soothing scrub. It chases away blackheads and dead cells, rids my face of excessive oiliness, and generally prepares my skin for the day ahead.

Ireland’s legendary crooner comes to Derry for a gig that promises to be packed to the rafters. The silk-tongued Donegal man has been at the top of his game for more than 20 years, and his diverse repertoire of standards from rock n roll through to country never fails to delight audiences worldwide.
The legendary singer-songwriter returns to Belfast to perform tracks from his new studio album Songbook alongside hits from his 45-plus year back catalogue. Mary-Anne McNulty speaks to latest rap/singing sensation Example (aka Elliot Gleave) about new single ‘Kickstarts’, his latest album and his upcoming appearance at this summer’s Oxegen festival...
Hi Elliot. The new single ‘Kickstarts’ is very catchy... Thanks. It’s got a nice upbeat vibe, and I’m really excited because the video was made available to view on YouTube last month and it’s already had millions of hits, which I’m thrilled about. The video is really cool and I had a great time making it. Your new album Won’t Go Quietly is out this month. There’s a lot of buzz about it... Yeah, I’m really happy with it. I think it’s an ideal album for the summer; hopefully it’ll be the soundtrack to a lot of people’s barbecues. It starts off poppy, there’s a few ballads in the middle bit, then it gets quite full-on towards the end. You worked with some of the top names in the business on this album, such as Calvin Harris and MJ Cole. How was that for you? The first album was much more of a sheltered process; just me, my producer and my sound engineer. With Won’t go Quietly, there are 14 songs produced by ten different people, so it was a real eye-opener in terms of seeing different techniques and creative processes. Working with great talents like MJ Cole and Chase & Status was a real learning curve for me. Like Plan B, you rap and sing on your tracks. There seems to be a really big audience for that particular style at the minute. I’m really pleased that UK rap is no longer underground. People like Dizzee Rascal, Tynchy Stryder and Plan B have really opened the door and made it mainstream. In the past, if you were labelled a ‘white rapper’ you tended to get put in a box, but nowadays radio stations that would never even have considered playing anything with rap on are starting to take note. Besides, my music’s as much about singing as it is rapping, so it’s great not to be pigeonholed. You’ve a got a real cheeky chappy persona, but this album, though still very funny in places, seems a bit more grown-up than the last. Are you getting all sensible on us? Not a chance! Anyone who goes to my gigs will notice that I still resemble someone from a mental institution!
34
But yeah, I think it’s fair to say that the new album is less tongue-in-cheek than the last. It’s more serious, and the references are less about London and much more global. Music critics and Radio 1 DJs have been queuing up to sing your praises. Is critical acclaim important to you? Yes, very much. It’s one thing having your friends and family saying you’re good, but that’s to be expected, and it’s not until I heard my songs getting extensive radio play that I really felt I’d achieved something. At the end of the day music is made to be listened to, so the fact my stuff has an audience means a lot. What can people expect from your live shows? They’re defined by lots of energy; it’s like a big party. No matter what type of music you’re into I think you’d enjoy my show – unless maybe if you’re a Def Metal fan. The YouTube video of me performing at the2009 UK Headline tour gives a pretty good idea of what people can expect. You’re playing Oxegen in July. Have you played Ireland before? Yeah, I’ve done loads of gigs in Ireland. When the Irish fans get into someone they really throw themselves into it. I supported Lily Allen in Dublin and the response I got on Facebook and Twitter was amazing. So many people had chased up my back catalogue and the enthusiasm for my music was fantastic, so I can’t wait to take to the Oxegen stage!
IT WASN’T UNTIL I HEARD MY SONGS GETTING EXTENSIVE RADIO PLAY THAT I REALLY FELT I’D ACHIEVED SOMETHING Example’s new single ‘Kickstarts’ and his album Won’t Go Quietly are both out now

HOTEL REVIEW
Fitz, Glitz and Glamour
Pure’s Sinead Melaugh checks out what Belfast’s five star Fitzwilliam Hotel has to offer...
Think 1930s Hollywood glamour and you’ll not be too far away from the interior of the Fitzwilliam Hotel. Dark and moody may not be everyone’s taste, but I actually really liked it. The lobby is extremely stylish although not very inviting; beautiful to look at but not enticing for weary travellers afraid to crumple the cushions.
Being one of a handful of five star hotels in Belfast, I was eager to get checked in. The reception staff were pleasant and helpful, however they did fail to tell us on checking in that there is a charge for overnight parking. This is not unusual for hotel parking in the centre of Belfast but I prefer to be told these things on checking in rather than checking out. The corridors to the rooms are very dimly lit, again something that I quite liked but I’m not sure everyone would. Dark walls and moody light lend themselves to a real touch of glamour, with mirrored panels on all of the exterior bedroom doors; a scary prospect at night when you have to look at your own face after a few cocktails. The bedrooms were large and full of light and I
loved the decor; very art deco with a real modern twist. The dark walls are set off with crisp white bedlinen and there are splashes of mustard yellow on the soft furnishings and a mustard yellow sofa to lift the colour scheme and although not as dramatic as other parts of the hotel; just as glamorous. Robes and slippers in the room would have been a nice touch but sadly these weren’t provided. We dined in the hotel restaurant whose menu has been designed by Kevin Thornton, famed for two Michelin stars from the Fitzwilliam’s sister hotel in Dublin. I was pleased with the choice on the menu; although not extensive, there was certainly enough to tempt the palate of any discerning diner.
Generally the food was very good; my starter of warm leek and potato veloute with poached quails egg was lovely and the main of venison loin equally delicious but was slightly let down by the mashed potatoes which weren’t very pleasant. The wine list is fantastic with some very affordable bottles and some higher priced wines for the
connoisseurs out there. The Fitzwilliam has a lot to offer the experienced traveller on a city break; a fantastic central location a mere stones throw from all of Belfast’s bars and restaurants and a sleek modern interior with a glamorous 1930s twist. The lobby area may not have been very inviting on arrival but following our night out, the warm fire and leather sofas offered some comfort on our return.

Garden de-luxe
Weather permitting, we’ll all be spending lots of quality time in the garden this summer, so be sure to lounge in style...
1.
38
Terrified though we are to tempt fate, we’re going to go out on a limb here and wager that the current sunny spell suggests a decent summer is on the cards. The garden is a social hub in summer time. Friends are made, wine is uncorked and old resentments are buried as the sun works its magic on even the grumpiest of dispositions. Achieving the right atmosphere is hugely dependent on how you utilise your space. Whether you have bags of room or a humble few acres to play with, a dash of colour in the form of vibrant crockery or quirky ornaments has the ability to lift the mood immediately. Comfort is also key. If you’re enjoying the company of friends and family well into the twilight hours and beyond, a plastic set of rickety chairs may not cut the mustard. With the recession biting down hard on us all, the need for a small semblance of luxury has never been so important. Annual holidays are beyond many budgets at present, so investing in a quality lounger or daybed, though pricey, could help recreate that holiday feeling right here at home. And ,provided you don’t leave your furniture exposed to the elements, they will serve you well for many summers to come.

Nights Pure explores the heady delights of beautiful Barcelona... As Spain’s most dynamic and cosmopolitan city, Barcelona caters to a range of holiday tastes, from the party seeker or sun worshipper to the culture vulture. Set on the sea and leading up to forested hilltops, Barcelona offers a heady combination of restaurants, bars and tourist attractions to keep the visitor busy for several days or longer. This vibrant city is the capital of Catalonia, an area with its own language, history and culture and this is displayed in its many forms of architecture, from the old trade centre’s gothic structures to the bizarre buildings of the modern era. Home to the famous Sonar Festival, the city is awash with activities, attractions and beautiful landscapes to drink in.

Eat Cal Pep, Plaza Olles, 8
Barcelona’s favourite tapas restaurant earns its reputation by providing fresh and original high quality tapas with excellent service. The squid rings, deep fried prawns and baby octopus are highly recommended. Leave plenty of time or book well in advance as lunchtime queues are often an hour long! It’s not the cheapest option but certainly the best for seafood lovers.
Drink Las Cuevas del Sorte
You’ll never go hungry in food-loving Barcelona.
Located in a remote part of the Cituat Vella district, this unique bar is set in a cave lit with thousands of tea lights to add to the atmosphere. Sit on a tree stump, admire the cave walls and mushroom bar and sip on a cocktail from the large list as you soak up the
funk and jazz music in the laid back ambience.
For the family
Barcelona Aquarium, Moll Espanya, Port Vell One of the city’s most popular tourist attractions, this world-renowned aquarium boasts a wide array of impressive aquatic creatures and an eye-catching wraparound tank containing sharks and rays. At €17.50 for adults and €12.50 for children, it’s a tad pricey, but with 11,000 animals and 450 different species to admire, it’s well worth it for lovers of the life aquatic and a great way to keep the kids amused for a while.
TRAVEL
El Cortes Ingles, Placa de Catalunga, Las Ramblas This department store is a shopper’s paradise, and also offers a stunning view from the ninth floor cafe. Las Ramblas is the main boulevard for eating, drinking and shopping and is lined with stalls, buskers and mime artists. Beware of bag snatchers and pick-pockets, though, as this is Barcelona’s most infamous area for petty theft.
Admire Sagrada Familia Far and away Barcelona’s top attraction is this imposing Catholic church designed by Antonio Gaudi. Although construction is set to continue until at least 2041, it has already become the city’s most important landmark. It will have 18 towers when it’s finished, but in the meantime you can go up the towers that are already there. Be prepared for an elevator ride and a long walk, though; not recommended for those with claustrophobia or a fear of heights!

Contact www.spainbookers.com to arrange a personal guide to the Gothic quarter, the Historic quarter, Picasso’s favourite haunts or all the gourmet delights the city has to offer. The fruits of success With the City of Culture 2013 result set to be announced in July, Pure explores the potential advantages of a win for Derry...

Harry’s makes the grade
Pure would like to congratulate Harry’s restaurant in Bridgend on being included in the Bridgestone 100 Best Restaurants Guide 2010. The popular Inishowen establishment scored a double whammy, as they also featured in the guide’s ‘top ten restaurants to beat the recession’ list. Well done to manager Donal Doherty and all the team down there; we think your well-hung steaks are to die for and this accolade is much deserved!
Waterfoot wows wedding market
City of Culture status could potentially see even more big shows hit the Millennium
Tourism The City of Culture status alone would undoubtedly attract even more tourists to Derry, and it is hoped our already vibrant tourism programme would grow organically Historic: Derry’s walls attract visitors from all over the world to encompass even more concerts, festivals, events and attractions.
Investment
Culture
An amazing arts and cultural programme is under development to support the bid and is sure to attract many visitors and entice locals from their routine. As City of Culture, there would undoubtedly be a massive buzz in the music, theatre, art and dance scene, providing a unique opportunity for the people of Derry to showcase their talents and bring out their enthusiasm, skills and pride in their city.
Regeneration
The aesthetics and feel of any city is vital, but as City of Culture winner Derry would have to look tip top. If successful, it is hoped we’ll see any derelict or shabby looking buildings get a nice facelift before the hordes of international visitors arrive!
Derry is harnessing support from public and private sector agencies to build on our outstanding cultural achievements and help us flourish in 2013 (fingers crossed!). When Liverpool took the title they experienced a £1.5 billion increase in economic activity in the city and a rise in employment in creative industries of 50 percent.
Congratulations to our friends at the Waterfoot Hotel, which has just celebrated its first birthday – many happy returns! Following the enormous success of their 2010/2011 ‘WOW’ wedding package, the team has just announced the details of their 2012 deal. The new package starts from £7,000 for mid week weddings and £8000 for weekend weddings, and the list of goodies included in the price is as long as your arm. The package also includes a WOW wedding account that will allow couples to call in and pay off their account on a regular basis – a great idea in these financially challenging times! For full details call the Waterfoot on 028 7134 5500.
Retail
As we attract more visitors we must provide more services and this resonates through the world of retail. Liverpool offered shoppers a discount card which provided a wide range of discounts to shoppers of fashion, lifestyle and culture. A successful bid would provide a welcome boost to the city’s retailers by bringing increased tourism and a wider market to sell their goods.

Yellow Moon gets the SATC bug
Our fashion spy was at Yellow Moon’s ‘Hot Frocks’ fashion show recently, which was held to celebrate the launch of the new Sex and the City movie. The fashion on display was super glam and the craic was great, so well done to Mari and all at Yellow Moon, models Emma and Sarah, and the hair and makeup experts from Studio. Show me your teeth Tired of his dull gnashers, Pure’s David Kavanagh headed out to Killea to try out Revive’s budget-busting laser teeth whitening treatment... completely pain free, takes around 30 minutes and, once complete, the results are instant ... and quite frankly shocking! I literally could not believe my eyes. My teeth came up the scale 14 shades and are almost the brightest they can be. I just couldn’t shut my mouth to stop starring at the results - a massive transformation! There’s an aftercare system in place, which combines a booster appointment and daily brushing of special medicated toothpaste, but the complete transformation to my smile and confidence was worth the £89 many times over. Having a new Hollywood smile is fab and stained yellow teeth is now a thing of the past and something
I never want to experience again – I’ll be booked in every six months from now on for a quick top up to boost my new pearly whites back up the smile scale again! Definitely a best buy for any men and women out there who are watching the pennies but still want to look fabulous. A trip here is just as important as a trip the hairdressers because it’s an affordable measure and now an essential part of my grooming routine! At £89 for the first treatment and £30 for booster treatments thereafter (recommended every 3-6 months depending on the staining) this is definitely an option worth considering.
Before
After
I’m a hardened smoker, coffee addict and red wine fanatic, which I think you’ll agree is a recipe for disaster if you dream of having a pearly white smile. I try and take care of my teeth by brushing regularly and going to the dentist for check-ups, but I still wasn’t over the moon with the colour and staining of my teeth. I’d been toying with the notion of teeth whitening for a while but I wasn’t too optimistic on dramatic results that morning when I examined my stained gnashers before my appointment at Revive. At £89 a treatment, I wasn’t expecting miracles, but I thought I’d give it a shot. The treatment itself is

This month, Mary-Anne McNulty talks to promising Derry fashion designer Christopher Reid on landing a coveted position at one of london’s most prestigious fashion houses
Derry designer Christopher Reid (top) is just about to start a new phase in his career at the fashion house of the late Alexander McQueen (above left). Also pictured are some of Christopher’s latest designs.
Christopher Reid, impeccably dressed in an expensive-looking cream leather jacket and jeans with seams that could cut diamond, has a big smile on his face when we meet in a Derry coffee shop to talk about all things fashion. He’ll begin an exciting new phase in his professional life this month when he will take up a coveted position in the ladieswear design department at Alexander McQueen in London. The suicide of the innovative designer in February rocked the fashion world, but it is hoped the McQueen ethos will live on in the line that bears his name, and Christopher is looking forward to the part he will play. “I went to the interview to gain experience really,” says the Creggan native, “and never imagined I would get the job.” But the head designers, impressed by Christopher’s flair for freehand illustrative drawing and expertise with knitwear, surprised him with a phone call offering him the job. “First of all I was stunned, and then delighted - I would have taken a job answering phones there I’m so in awe of what they do.” The 27-year-old clearly has fashion in his blood. He says: “When I was young, I was always drawing clothes, or cutting up fabric and arranging it, or drawing things on my trainers. I didn’t really understand at that age what it was all about, but as I grew older it became obvious to me that fashion was the one thing I was good at.” Having done his degree in Manchester, Christopher came back to Derry where he did a HND in textile design at North West Regional College. “It’s a shame there isn’t a full fashion degree course available in Derry,” he says, “but I have to say that textile course was brilliant; the standard is really high, and I learned so much from it.” Christopher has just wrapped up a fashion shoot showcasing his latest designs, and as our stunning pictures suggest, the Derry man is primed to set the fashion world alight when he joins McQueen next month. With Christopher, though, modesty prevails, and he’s quick to point out that fame and fortune is not what drives him. “Fashion is in me,” he says. “It’s the only thing I’m good at, and I want to do well at it, but I’m not interested in being a big famous designer. “My true goal is to be a respected team member of a really reputable fashion house and influence people through the work I do.”
Congratulations to this month’s lovely hostess Laura O’Doherty on her engagement to the love of her life Sean Cassidy; Pure wish the happy couple many loved-up years to come and judging by Laura’s fantastic cooking skills, Sean will be very well looked after in the kitchen!
Looking to unwind after a busy week’s work with the Western Trust in Gransha, dinner party novice Laura O’Doherty opened the doors of her Ballykelly home for a truly unforgettable ‘Come Dine’ experience. Here, she tells Pure how the night went...
“
Apart from Christmas Day, I’d never really done a proper dinner party before, so I wanted to make an effort and have everything really nice. I thought it would be good fun to have place settings for everyone, so I made ‘Little Miss’ cards that I thought represented each of my guests - and they knew straight away who was who. My friend Ciara is pregnant, so she was ‘Little Miss Bump’, and there were no prizes for guessing who ‘Little Miss Chatterbox’ was – my sister Emma! When it came to the menu, I had originally planned to have fish, but knowing how fussy some of them are I decided to go for the safer option and have chicken as my main course. I have Louisiana Chicken quite often
when I eat out, so I had a fair idea of how to go about preparing it. I chose to make the soup and the panna cotta because I love Italian food, but also because these were two dishes that could be made the night before. It was really important to me that I would enjoy the night with my guests and not get stressed out, so I made sure my menu was going to be really tasty, but not overly ambitious. I have to say I really enjoyed the whole night, and hopefully my guests feel the same. The main thing for me was that they all enjoyed the food and had a bit of fun. They even got into the spirit of the TV show by checking out my bedroom drawers while I was cooking – thank God I gave the house a good clean before they arrived!
“ I have to say I really enjoyed the whole night, and hopefully my guests feel the same. The main thing for me was that they all enjoyed the food and had a bit of fun.”

Girl power: Laura and her guests enjoying the night
“Laura was a great hostess” says Danielle. “The presentation of the food was excellent, and the soup in particular was delicious. Laura had her timings spot on, and we all had a good rest in between courses so we could really enjoy all the food. The chicken main was as good as you’d get in any restaurant, and the little place cards and sparklers were a great touch. The only criticism we would have is that the bruschetta was a wee bit too crispy, but other than that she did an amazing job.” Score: 8/10

MENU On arrival Rossini: freshly blended strawberries with Champagne Starter Bruschetta Caprese: Bruschetta topped with buffalo mozzarella, garlic and sun-dried tomato served on a bed of rocket with a honey mustard dressing Soup Spicy tomato and roasted red pepper Main course Louisiana chicken: Free range chicken fillet on a bed of crushed potatoes, drizzled in chorizo cream sauce and topped with tobacco onions Dessert Panna cotta: Famous dessert of cooked cream, rum and sugar topped with white chocolate and fresh strawberries (topped with sparklers!)
Pure’s verdict:
Hostess Laura O’Doherty
Laura was a dab hand in the kitchen. The whole group was catered for from start to finish and we didn’t have to lay a finger on the dishes or make any trips to the kitchen for top ups on drinks - she had it planned to perfection and the whole night went perfectly. We loved the finishing touches Laura put to the evening. Each guest had a place setting and a corresponding ‘Little Miss’ to suit everyone’s personality, and the sparklers in the dessert showed Laura had really thought about all aspects of the evening. The food was cooked to perfection and the whole evening ran like clockwork. It takes a cool cook in the kitchen to pull everything off and still make time for banter in between courses without breaking into a sweat! Score: 8/10

“It was a brilliant night,” says Emma. “We were able to guess straight away which ‘Little Miss’ we were, and the presentation of the table was lovely. The food was cooked to perfection, and we were all saying we couldn’t get over how delicious Laura’s soup was. The craic was great, and Laura was a fantastic host; we really couldn’t fault her on a single thing.”
“The food was gorgeous,” says Ciara, “and I’m pregnant at the minute so I had no trouble eating my way through all the courses! I’m not a huge fan of desserts, but I really loved Laura’s panna cotta. She turned the lights out and brought it in with sparklers, which was a really nice touch. Overall, we think she did a great job. Everyone was well looked after and the presentation of the food and the table was top class.”

THE REVIEWS
The Strand Sports Cafe
by Mark Dalzell Downstairs in the Strand Bar I’ve discovered a haven for football fans. With 18 wide screen, high definition televisions and six pool tables, it’s impossible not to join in the sporting atmosphere over a cold pint and a good feed. The bar staff were quick off the mark and two decent pints were served up pronto. No matter where you choose to sit in the bar, there’s a TV within eye and earshot, meaning that whether you prop up the bar or opt for a comfortable booth, you won’t miss any of the action. Match of the day was the FA Cup final between Chelsea and Portsmouth. I’m going to ’fess up here by stating my unswerving loyalty to Man United, but I have to say even I got a few goose bumps watching Drogba’s free kick sail past David James in glorious high definition. HD screens are tailor-made for sport, and as a football fanatic I have to say that this year’s World Cup has been made all the more enjoyable thanks to HD. Watching football is thirsty work, so it was good to see the Sports Cafe has a pile of promotions on. With pints at a nifty £1.99 during matches, I had a few pennies to spare for some grub. We went
lightly for starters with bruschetta and prawn cocktail but the portion sizes were more than generous and put us in great form for the match and the main course. A cheeseburger is essential for any sporting event and it didn’t disappoint; it was large and meaty with a good helping of garlic chips on the side. I was encouraged to try the Cock n’ Bull and I’m glad I did...a huge bowl full of juicy cuts of chicken and beef in a peppery sauce with a side order of your choice, hard to finish but somehow we managed it! Overall, the menu choices are plentiful and the portions generous so no complaints there. The atmosphere was electric, and while the clientele was male-dominated there were several ladies enjoying the food and football too. Don’t get me wrong; there’s no danger of any of the screens being tuned to Loose Women, but if fellas do fancy bringing the missus along they definitely won’t feel as if they’ve just walked into a testosteronefilled locker room. Definitely recommended for any sporting occasion that deserves wide screen, high definition and several beers.

THE REVIEWS
The Belfray Country Inn by David Kavanagh Located on the Glenshane Road on the site of the former Inn at the Cross, the recently renovated Belfray Country Inn is housed in attractive surrounds and perfect for a tasty bite away from the hustle and bustle of the city. New owners Brian and John have revamped the venue from top to bottom, and it’s obviously been a labour of love. The standard of decor, food and design here more than meets expectations, and I’ve spent many a happy business meeting or lunch here enjoying their top notch weekday carvery. With past experience of the venue, I was intrigued to see what their new restaurant menu had to offer, so myself and my dining companion visited the Belfray on a busy weekend evening to see if the quality I enjoyed on daytime visits was replicated during the evening hours. I’m pleased to say that the end result was better than ever. I had a great night, ate fabulous food and relaxed in luxurious and inviting surroundings. For starters I had cajun deep fried garlic mushrooms and my companion had smoked hoi sin duck salad. The
flavours were perfectly balanced and the portions humungous and - top of the list of criteria for all Pure restaurant reviews – the food tasted really fresh; we don’t need any fancy sauces if the ingredients can speak for themselves! The Belfray also boosts an impressive wine menu, with a varied selection of New World and European wines to choose from. We opted for a luscious and aromatic New Zealand pinot gris and settled down to our mains. I chose tempura of monkfish and my companion had sirloin steak with all the trimmings. The monkfish was to die for, flaky and steaky all at once, and my partners sirloin massive - there wasn’t a word spoken until we’d scraped our plates clean! Dessert came out and we somehow managed to find room to share a wonderfully sinful maltesers cheesecake followed by a lovely cheeseboard. Talk about gluttonous! The Belfray definitely gets the Pure stamp of approval: great food, great service and friendly staff - what more can anyone ask for?

MY FAVOURITE THINGS
Julian Simmons
UTV presenter and continuity announcer Julian Simmons talks to Pure about his love of travel, dance music and having the nation in stitches with his Coronation Street intros...
High life: Julian’s a frequent flyer
Double act:Vera and Ivy (picture: ITV Granada picture archive) Holmes is where the heart is: Eamonn is one of Jul ian’s best friends
I LOVE INTRODUCING CORONATION STREET ON UTV. I find that the people in that part of the world are very like the characters we have here in Northern Ireland - they tell it how it is. People come up to me and say things like ‘I loved the wee bit you did about Rita last Wednesday night’; it means a lot to me that my little intros make people laugh. MY ALL-TIME FAVOURITE CORONATION STREET CHARACTER was Vera Duckworth. When she and Ivy Tilsley were working in Frecsos the banter between them was hilarious – especially when Lynne Perrie came in one day with her lips bursting after plastic surgery! And of course Blanche will be sorely missed. Her caustic one-liners were legendary.

Hong Kong is a favourite haunt
Soft option: Cranberry juice
I LOVE TO TRAVEL. I used to work in the airline industry and many of my friends are cabin crew, so I’m always jetting off to somewhere or other. For an all-action few days, Hong Kong is hard to beat. For wild nights, it has to be Bangkok, and for a bit of peace and quiet I visit Guernsey three times a year.
my friends’ children when I’m out, which can be a bit awkward. I often wonder ‘what’s the protocol here? Should I come down off the dancing podium in my lycra cycling shorts and say hello?’! MY CLOSEST CELEBRITY FRIEND is Eamonn Holmes. I’ve known him and his family for many a year, and admire him deeply for his stamina and total professionalism. I’m also good friends with Sian Lloyd (ITV weather presenter) who comes over to Belfast now and again due to work commitments. She’s a fellow Celt, so we always enjoy a good natter together. IF I WASN’T A TV PRESENTER I’d still be in the airline industry. I worked for many years as part of the passenger service team for Air Canada. As you can imagine, we dealt with all aspects of the human condition, and after working for so many years in Heathrow’s Terminal 3 I can honestly say there’s nothing that embarrasses me. I even got stuck in a lift once with a women whose waters broke and held her hand for 50 minutes while the baby was born!
I’M A BIT OF A FILM BUFF. I love all the old Bette David movies – Now, Voyager is a classic - and I’m a sucker for a sad story. I find as I get older I bawl my eyes out very easily. I made an absolute exhibition of myself at Titanic, and the less said about ET the better! I love well-crafted movies, and I think it’s a bit of a shame that films seem to be moving away from that in favour of CGI and excessive gore.
MY PERFECT DAY would definitely involve some form of travel. I’m at my happiest when I’m getting up of a morning and preparing for a trip. My apartment’s clean, my bags are all packed and I’m ready to go; it’s the greatest feeling. And it doesn’t matter where I’m going. I’m just as happy sitting on the bus to Dublin as I’d be jetting off to Dubai.
I LOVE DANCE MUSIC, and I really enjoy the club scene in Belfast. Rain is a great club. I’m not much of a drinker, so my tipple is cranberry juice and that keeps me going on the dance floor! I’m starting to bump into
I LOVE COMING DOWN TO DERRY. The people here are so friendly, and I always look forward to hopping on the Maiden City Flyer and heading down. A night on the tear here is hard to beat!
