Disney stories are easy to fall in love with because the hard times are conquered and your favourite character is soon on top of the world again. This article reminded me of one of our contributors in this issue of Vitalise. Kevin Rutter works with boys who don’t always have both parents and often particularly lack a father figure in their lives. Their stories don’t always have the same happy ending as on the big screen – the kids he works with sometimes have to grow up too quickly. Rutter, a true champion for the kids with whom he works, shares his story in this issue of Vitalise. Be sure to give it a read – it may awaken the activist in you.
time. Vital’s nutritional expert, Pam Pillay, provides insight into the consequences of over-indulging; implementing her advice will save you some new-year-getting-backon-the-wagon-pains. Trust me. days of activism:
time to take a stand The 16 Days of Activism campaign for no violence against women, children and the vulnerable is a global campaign that starts on 25 November and ends on 10 December. This campaign raises awareness about gender-based violence as a human rights issue at a local, regional, national and international level.
T
he South African 16 Days of Activism campaign is aimed at raising awareness as well as strengthening partnerships between State agencies, nongovernmental organisations and the corporate sector. The South African Constitution enshrines and protects human rights for all, but particularly the most vulnerable in our society. Violence in all its forms devalues human dignity and the self-worth of the person and must be eradicated from our society.
ACTIVISTS NETWORKING AGAINST THE EXPLOITATION OF CHILDREN The work of Activists Networking against the Exploitation of Children (ANEX) focuses on counter-trafficking, anti-child labour and youth development. Despite the diversity of the scope, all its programmes are linked to the eradication of all forms of the enslavement and trafficking of children and the youth. ANEX works in the central Karoo towns of Beaufort West and Murraysburg. Human trafficking, the business of trading in human beings, is a big problem in the central Karoo. Many youths and children are trafficked largely from poor rural areas to urban centres like Johannesburg and Cape Town. ANEX has four crosscutting programmes to raise awareness of child and youth trafficking. For more, please visit www.anexcdw.org.za
The Vital Foundation will actively continue pursuing progress in eradicating this scourge. To create more awareness, the foundation will share all activity on its social media platforms, but would also like to request that the public share their participation to create discussion and involve communities. The Vital Foundation would like to make a meaningful change, one life at a time, as creating healthy families and healthy homes is the end goal. CALLING ORGANISATIONS FIGHTING WOMAN AND CHILD ABUSE The Vital Foundation funding applications will be open at the end of January 2015. Please visit www.vitalfoundation.co.za to download the application form. We want to know about your organisation and all the good work being done to help victims of abuse. The cut-off date is 28 February 2015.
Did you know? Women aged 15 to 44 are more at risk of rape and domestic violence than cancer, motor accidents, war and malaria, according to World Bank data. Between 500 000 and two million people, the majority of them women and children, are trafficked annually into life-threatening situations including slavery or servitude.

n Saturday, 15 November 2014, Vital Health Foods teamed up with Helderberg Harriers, in collaboration with Run/Walk for Life Somerset West, to campaign against abuse. This was the launch of the event, where for the first time two races merged, the Winelands Marathon and the Vital Run, becoming the Vital Winelands Run. The day was a great success as 5089 athletes finished the race and a total of R40,000 was raised. All proceeds from the event were donated to the PATCH Helderberg Child Abuse Centre.

A CLASSIC APPROACH TO CARE On Friday, 21 November 2014, with the support of friends and suppliers of Vital Health Foods, the Vital Foundation handed over a cheque to the Drakenstein Palliative Hospice and Butterfly House. Butterfly House speaks to the core of what the Vital Foundation is about, as it provides services, often in partnership with other organisations, which will add to the quality of life of patients, their families (infected and affected) and others made vulnerable through neglect, abuse, malnutrition, substance abuse, extreme poverty and illness. Over the past 16 years, Vital Health Foods has been proudly associated with the work the Drakenstein Hospice does for the Helderberg community, and hopes to continue the positive relationship that results in a lot of people getting the critical aid they require.
It begins when illness is diagnosed, and continues regardless of treatment received.
Health providers must evaluate and alleviate a child’s physical, psychological and social distress.
Effective palliative care requires a broad multidisciplinary approach that includes the family.
Makes use of available community resources (even if resources are limited).
Can be provided in tertiary care facilities, community health centres and in children’s homes.

I have chronic sinusitis and during the change of seasons and summer, my allergies get worse. My hay fever drives me insane. I find it difficult to get through the day at work. Does Vital offer a product that can provide relief? Firstly, I would advise you to consult with your doctor about what chronic medication you should take to prevent or ease the symptoms, as every case and individual is different. If you are already on medication, make sure that you take it consistently, even when you think you are feeling much better. I would like to recommend Vital Allergy Ease. This supplement is a natural herbal formulation that does take some time to work, but

my journey
INTO GENDER ACTIVISM Kevin Rutter is co-founder of Front Page Father, which is a media campaign dedicated to creating awareness about the value of involved fathers and to empower men to be more involved in the lives of their children and families. He is an activist, promoting men as non-violent and caring.

I
distinctly remember driving home from the hospital after Tarryn was born, a lot more cautiously than usual. I was suddenly overwhelmed with a sense of responsibility and the thought of making fathering a priority in my life. The truth is … a father was born the same day. I needed help, and when I started the research into fatherhood, and realised the extent of fatherlessness in our country, I felt a sudden empathy for literally millions of children growing up without a role model for their source of masculinity and identity. Who were they looking to for their developing manhood and self-image? In Fatherless America, David Blankenhorn says, “It is no exaggeration to say that fatherlessness is the most harmful demographic trend of this generation. It is the engine driving our most urgent social problems.” Current research backs up his statement. When fathers are disenfranchised for a variety of reasons, the results are as follows:
My life is now dedicated to healing men, because we will then heal women and children at the same time.
kevin rutter
In her dissertation The social construction of the South African male identity, Cilicia Senta Augustine comments: The importance of a father figure as a role model has been researched from a number of psychological perspectives. They have discussed the impact of absent fathers and the
need for fathers to be more emotionally available especially towards their sons and family in general. Recent research has focused on the life of a father, the pressure, the fear and the inability to communicate his love because of the masculine code of what society defines as a father and a man; a stoic, rational, inexpressive person who demands respect. Private stories of men in therapy, however, reveal a deep longing for connectedness and nurturing. They are frustrated by their inability to express affection to their wives and children. They fear being perceived as weak if they do so. Such patriarchal sanctions on the behaviour of men have detrimental effects for men themselves as well as their interpersonal relationships. This awakening led me to the place of realising that we need to do some serious work with young men, particularly offering up different models of masculinity (promoting men as caring and non-violent). It is only by examining the “man box”
As founder of Fathers in Africa, a non-profit organisation dedicated to running multifaceted programmes, Kevin believes that the future of South Africa lies in the character of her children, and that fatherlessness is the most significant social problem we face. The only credible strategy for reversing the current trend of declining child well-being is to begin the process of reconnecting millions of South African children to their fathers.
and traditional patriarchal views of masculinity, and ways that our boys are being socialised into this toxic masculinity, that we can begin to challenge these influences. My life is now dedicated to healing men, because we will then heal women and children at the same time.

Diabetes is one of the fastest-growing diseases in the world – and this upward trajectory is likely to continue as the rate of obesity steadily increases. However, it is not all doom and gloom as following basic lifestyle guidelines can help prevent and manage type 2 diabetes as well as insulin resistance. Pam Pillay investigates.
the three treatment pillars To successfully manage or prevent the onset of diabetes, a three-step approach should be followed:
01. Diet 02. Exercise 03. Medication By following a healthy diet and a sustainable exercise regimen, you can keep type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance at bay. If you have been diagnosed type 1, 2 or insulin resistant and medication has become necessary, these conditions can be managed perfectly by ensuring all three steps are followed religiously.
DIET Your diet or eating plan should include plenty of the following:
• F resh fruit •V egetables •W hole grains • F resh fruit • Lean meats or proteins • Low-fat or fat-free dairy •H ealthy fats (omega-3 fatty acids) • Water
Maintaining this type of diet along with ensuring good blood glucose levels will ensure that the complications associated with diabetes like hypertension, heart disease, kidney disease, gout, neuropathy and deteriorating vision can be staved. The key to maintaining healthy blood glucose levels is focusing on the carbohydrate content of the foods and beverages you consume. The three main goals are to manage: The type of carbohydrates consumed: These should be of a low glycaemic index (GI). A low-GI carbohydrate will allow blood glucose levels to rise slowly in the blood, thereby avoiding hyperglycaemic (high blood glucose levels) or hypoglycaemic (low blood glucose levels) episodes. It will also place less pressure on the pancreas to release insulin.
and hyperglycaemia. It is a good idea to have main meals no more than four to five hours apart and include snacks in between the three main meals. Essentially, it would mean eating every two hours. It may sound like a lot of eating but it will ensure a more constant blood glucose level.
The key to maintaining healthy blood glucose levels is focusing on the carbohydrate content of the foods and beverages you consume.
The amount of carbohydrates consumed: Planning or knowing how many carbohydrates should be consumed at each meal ensures that there won’t be a large dumping of glucose into the blood stream, which could once again lead to hypoglycaemia or hyperglycaemia as well as straining the pancreas. The timing or distribution of carbohydrates consumed: This is also important in preventing periods of hypoglycaemia

“In 2006, I was diagnosed with diabetes. After going to see my optician, I was told that I had a small cataract that had begun to form. He then advised me to start taking beta carotene to help with my eyesight. I decided to try Vital Eye Boost, as the amount of beta carotene was quite high as well as the fact that it contained other nutrients for maintaining eye health. I have been using Vital Eye Boost ever since. I go for an eye examination every year, and to my delight my eyes have stayed exactly the same for the past eight years. I would encourage all diabetics to take Vital Eye Boost as your eyes are one of the most precious things that you have. Thank you Vital, for this supplement. Viv Mitchell/Durbanville, CAPE TOWN

Heart health tips Fibre, fibre and more fibre: Fibre-rich foods help to keep you regular. Try to include items like cherries, grapes, crunchy bell peppers, beans, whole grains and nuts. A daily intake of 20 to 35 g is recommended. Chewing gum: Chewing gum can help to relieve acid reflux and heartburn because it stimulates the production of acid-neutralising saliva. Weight loss: Even a little weight loss can improve gastrointestinal symptoms. Extra weight, especially around the midsection, can worsen digestive problems like heartburn, gas and burping. Eat small meals: Indigestion, bloating, heartburn and other digestive problems can be prevented by eating smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day. Fluids: Drinking plenty of fluids helps the body to expel waste and prevent constipation. The water requirement for each person varies; consult a doctor to find out how much water is enough for you. 015

IMPAIRED VISION? Sight is an essential part of everyday life, influencing how people of all ages learn, communicate, work, play and interact with the world. Yet millions live with visual impairment, and many more remain at risk for eye disease and preventable eye injury. Healthy vision is critical to your quality of life; ensure that monitoring your eye health is on your to-do list.
016 路 NOVEMBER 2014
THE PROBLEM The macula, an area responsible for detailed central vision, is part of the retina, which is a thin layer of nerve cells that lines the back of the eyeball. Macular degeneration occurs when light-sensing cells in this highly sensitive area start to degenerate and central vision loss takes place. Generally, women are more likely than men to develop macular degeneration and experience the effects of severe vision loss from the disease. Macular degeneration usually develops gradually and painlessly; signs and symptoms of the disease may also vary. Individuals with macular degeneration may first notice a blurring of central vision that is most apparent when performing visually detailed tasks such as reading and sewing. Blurred central vision may also make straight lines appear slightly distorted or warped. As the disease progresses, blind spots form within central vision. The extent of central vision loss varies according to the type of macular degeneration. Age-related macular degeneration is the most common type of macular degeneration. There are two types of Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD): dry and wet. More than 90% of all people with AMD have the dry form.
WIN! A vital Eye Boost hamper Click here to enter
DRY With dry macular degeneration, yellowwhite deposits, called drusen, accumulate in the Retinal Pigment Epithelium (RPE) tissue beneath the macula. Vision loss from dry macular degeneration occurs very gradually over the course of many years (sometimes decades). WET In the wet form, newly created abnormal blood vessels grow under the macula (called choroidal neovascularisation). These blood vessels leak, bleed and scar the retina, distorting vision or destroying central vision. Damage to the macula occurs rapidly. There are several forms of macular degeneration that affect children, teenagers and adults that are known as early-onset or juvenile macular degeneration. Many of these forms are hereditary and are more accurately
called macular dystrophies, instead of degenerations.
Risk factors • • • • •
Age: The risk of acquiring macular degeneration increases with age. Gender: Women are more likely than men to develop macular degeneration. Smoking increases the risk of acquiring macular degeneration. Family history: Macular degeneration appears to be hereditary. Obesity/diet: Obesity has been associated with macular degeneration.
Although no one has found a treatment or cure for the dry form of age-related macular degeneration, there are lifestyle changes and medications that can help slow the progression of the condition.
THE SOLUTION 1. Visit an eye care professional for an eye exam. 2. Supplement with vitamins A, C, E, zinc and lutein, as they are essential nutrients found in the retina. 3. Diet: Antioxidants are important for eye health. 4. Ultraviolet ray protection: Always protect the eyes with sunglasses. 5. Smoking cessation: Stopping smoking can decrease the development of macular degeneration. 6. Regular cardiovascular exercise will improve the body's overall health.

Tips to squash sugar cravings. Spot the hidden sugars and low-sugar alternatives. Healthy homes: advice for a sweet tooth.
Wash out sweet cravings Less is more
Five tips for squashing sweet cravings
A leading symptom of dehydration is a sweet craving. ♦ Drink at least six glasses of water per day. ♦ As an alternative to water, enjoy Vital Fruit Infusion Green Tea: it is sugar-free and has a lovely sweet aroma, which will help reduce sweet cravings.
You can reset your taste buds’ sensitivity to a lower level of sweetness. ♦ Gradually reduce the amount of sugar added to your beverages and cereals – the less you use, the less you need. ♦ Avoid intensely sweet-tasting foods. The less you expose your taste buds to sweet foods, the less sugar you will crave.
Fruit is your friend
How low-GI can you go?
Eat chocolate daily
♦ Eat a low-GI fruit – one apple or peach – one hour before your usual sweet craving hits. Don’t wait for the sweet craving to arrive, catch it one hour before its usual peak. Eating the fruit will help balance your glucose levels, thereby reducing the physiological sweet craving trigger.
♦ Start your day with Vital Original Muesli, it will help balance your appetite and reduce sweet cravings. ♦ Snack on a small portion (two tablespoons) of almonds. Research has shown this low-GI snack helps control appetite and supports weight loss success.
♦ Research has shown that people who follow a weightloss diet, and include a small portion of dark chocolate daily, are more likely to stick to their eating plans. ♦ Dark chocolate (at least 70% cocoa) is the key, as it contains very little sugar but all the chocolaty taste you crave.
DID YOU KNOW? 340 ml soft drink equals 12 teaspoons sugar / 350 ml drinking yoghurt equals 9 teaspoons sugar / 300 ml flavoured water equals 10 teaspoons sugar / 50 ml tomato sauce equals 3 teaspoons sugar.
