Holli, can you tell us about your Montana roots?
Holli:
I was born in Bozeman. My dad’s family were some of the original settlers in Bozeman, moving here from Germany and Switzerland in 1880, right around when Bozeman was incorporated. We have a lot of family history here. Bozeman was a small town back then. By high school, I was anxious to leave, to see some other things. Did you feel drawn to

anyplace in particular?
H: During my undergrad, and again in law school, I had the opportunity to study abroad and travel Europe. I became very interested in international travel and international affairs. When I graduated from law school, I took a job in Woodland Hills, California as legal counsel at a small defense contractor. That’s where I met my husband. Scott, what brought you to that company?

Scott: I grew up in
Southern Idaho, went to college in Idaho, and decided it was time to head to the beach. I’m a systems engineer, and I found myself in Southern California working in the defense industry. I really enjoyed it—I built my life there. I really enjoyed mountain biking in the Santa Monica mountains, and hanging at the beach. When Holli and I were dating, and things got more serious, we had a conversation. “It may be that I ask you to marry me, but before you say yes,
above: The you need to Simcoes used consider that a PureWest I made my life agent to find perfect in SoCal, and their home outside I plan to stay Bozeman. here.” Two years later we were moving. And that was the best thing ever, as it turns out.
What changed?
H: I was growing very weary of the Los Angeles traffic, and the crowds, and the lack of distinct seasons. It was hard to get to places easily and enjoy outdoor activities.
Q&A One day, I realized that our time off was consumed with mundane errands in the San Fernando Valley like trips to Costco and Home Depot rather than enjoying the beach or mountains. Also, I had started my own law firm with a partner in Calabasas, California. It was right around the dot com bomb, and the economy took a hit. S: When Holli decided to exit her law firm, we left for Portland, Oregon. Her sister was there; we had friends and family there. By this point, I was in the medical device industry, developing technology solutions to treat patients with heart conditions. My current focus is on remote monitoring solutions for patients with Pacemakers, Defibrillators, and Heart Failure monitors. I collect input from various stakeholders—like clinical customers, internal marketing folks—and convert that into a specification for the software developers. When we moved, my employer, based in Los Angeles, let me stay on for a couple months to finish a project. It’s been 16 years of working remotely since then. How did you make your way back to Montana?
H: In Portland, I had been working for a small healthcare consulting firm. They were acquired by Huron Consulting Group, a large
business-consulting firm based in Chicago. My role became less oriented toward the Portland office, and more oriented toward Huron as a global company. My title is Associate General Counsel. From the legal perspective, I support aspects of Huron’s consulting business, like helping write and negotiate contracts. In a bigger picture, I’m responsible for making sure the company is minimizing its risk, abiding by legal requirements, and, as a public company, that we’re responsible to our shareholders. Scott and I had our daughter, Josie, and we weren’t seeing our Montana and Idaho relatives as much as we wanted to. I asked my boss if I could work from home from Montana, and Scott did the same. We got a positive response. What brought you back to Bozeman?
H: I love the beauty. The sunsets. There’s top: Holli and just something Scott relax on about the air; it their porch. middle: Scott in really hits you his home office bottom: Holli when you fly plays the piano into Bozeman and step outside the airport. Maybe it’s because I’m from here and my roots are here, but I think most people here feel the same way. The schools are amazing; the access to outdoors is at your fingertips. We also chose Bozeman because it was a little further ad-

vanced in having some of the infrastructure we needed to work remotely, and the busier airport. If you add up all the factors for where you want to raise a family, Bozeman wins, hands-down. Nobody takes it for granted.

S: Having grown up in Idaho, and being very active in outdoors-related activities, Montana was a natural fit. Having the outdoors so easily accessible, it’s good for the soul. My go-to fishing spot is the Gallatin River, between Bozeman and Big Sky. I find it extremely relaxing to be throwing a fly out, whether I catch anything or not. The isolation and the
Q&A rhythm of the river helps get rid of the stresses of work. It allows me to just relax. What’s it like to work remotely?
H: It’s all about the flexibility. That’s the whole reason I do this. You can work full-time, while having a flexible schedule. I’ve taken lunch breaks and gone out the door on a cross-country ski loop. You can open your windows, and have fresh air. Huron is a global firm, and I support our businesses in the US and abroad. On any given day, I may be talking to someone in the UK, Switzerland, Singa-
pore, Australia, India, or any of the fifty states. Technology is the key and it continues to evolve in ways that make remote work seamless. People coming here to Bozeman, it’s not often for a job or a career, but a lifestyle, and you find ways to make your career fit your lifestyle, rather than the other way around. S: I get down to California once a month for work, and now, I wonder why I thought I wanted to stay there for the rest of my life. H: The natural beauty, that we all love, is why we live here.

What makes a house a home? What makes a neighborhood a community? We think it’s about the love you put in, the bonds you grow, and the commitment it takes to work towards a better future. At PureWest, we build relationships for life, and that includes dedicating regular contributions to numerous charitable organizations, including these:

mission is to connect people who care to causes that matter, to build a better community. They do this by strengthening Bozeman’s local nonprofit sector through grant funding and professional development, helping donors to give by creating charitable funds to support causes they care about locally, and inspiring a culture of giving in their community, through initiatives like the Give Big Gallatin Valley fundraising event. Recent highlight: The Bozeman Area Community Foundation recently received accreditation with the nation’s highest standard for philanthropic excellence. Northwest Montana Rugged, quiet, and developing
PHOTO CREDIT: LEFT: JACOB FRANK, GLACIER NATIONAL PARK
IN NORTHWEST MONTANA, where the Great Plains run up against the Rocky Mountain front, the landscape abruptly shifts. Sudden relief between jagged, bald alpine summits and lush valleys creates a striking sense of drama. The Continental Divide arcs through the Bob Marshall Wilderness and Glacier National Park, which together constitute one of the largest, most intact, most biodiverse ecosystems of its kind. These are truly untrammeled lands. Where carpets of wildflowers meet crystalline lakes; mountain goats and bighorn sheep make their home. Human inhabitants enjoy seclusion and serenity within the region’s undulating topography. From West Glacier, the national park’s primary entrance, all the way to Eureka, the final outpost before the Canadian border, you’ll find small and tight-knit communities. Life here is marked not by the hustle and bustle of Main Street, but by the quiet and intimate connection to nature. People love to hike, golf, hunt, mountain bike, fish, and camp—and there’s no shortage of opportunities to do so. Quaint dirt roads connect farms, ranches, and public lands.
towards year-round tourism by embracing its easy access to outdoor recreation. Whitefish, with its ski area, lake, and charming Central Avenue, is a humble resort town. Kalispell, the seat of Flathead County, is the geographical, cultural, and economic center of the region. With a diversifying economy, an international airport, state-of-the-art healthcare, and a well-respected community college, Kalispell draws workers and business owners from across the nation.
You’ll also find three of Montana’s fastest growing towns in the heart of the Flathead Valley. Columbia Falls sits on the main stem of Flathead River, at the mouth of Bad Rock Canyon. This former logging town is seamlessly pivoting
Whether you’re drawn to the city center or a property at the end of a long back road, Northwest Montana is a place to experience unspoiled western country and thriving, dynamic communities.

VISITING GLACIER NATIONAL PARK? IF YOU HAVE ONE WEEKEND:
The scenic Going-to-the-Sun Road cannot be missed. This 51-mile road, regarded as an engineering marvel, punches through sheer rock walls, reveals expansive views, and gradually wends its way to Logan Pass, 6,647 ft., on the Continental Divide. You’ll notice numerous trailheads—each one leads to someplace amazing. Tread carefully, for you may encounter fields of wildflowers in bloom, herds of mountain goats, and a total sense of wonder.
pavement and path. Now, for the trifecta: Explore Glacier’s edge by boat. The leisurely North Fork of the Flathead River runs along the park’s western limit, and the frothing Middle Fork fences the southern boundary. Both river segments boast Wild & Scenic credentials, meaning they’re among the nation’s most pristine waterways. Book a trip with a West Glacier-based outfitter to ensure your rafting experience runs as smoothly as a river pebble. ONE SUMMER: 700+ miles of
trail connect 65 backcountry campgrounds. Spending day after day with no to-dos other than walking through wild country does the spirit good. Travel a portion of the famous Continental Divide Trail, or make up your own unique route. ONE LIFETIME: Lucky you.
You’ve got time for all of the above. Rinse and repeat.

NORTHWEST MONTANA
Kalispell Steps Boldly Into The Future On the first day of 1892, a ceremonial silver spike driven into newly constructed rail track officially connected Kalispell to the nation-building Great Northern railroad. “The iron horse has at last snorted in the Garden of Eden of Montana,” the newspaper read. Kalispell’s star quickly rose as a freshly minted railway town, and even when the Great Northern re-directed its main line north to Whitefish in 1904, Kalispell maintained its position as the economic core of the region. Freight cars have continued to bustle fastidiously to and fro’ downtown Kalispell—up until late 2018, when the very last train rolled out of Kalispell.
While the railway heralded the prosperous turn of the 20th century, transportation trends evolve. What’s next for Kalispell’s old rails? A transformation into walking trails, which will connect green spaces, locally owned businesses, and neighborhoods. Local leaders believe this public infrastructure project will spur the rebirth of downtown Kalispell as an accessible, welcoming, and vibrant community center. Already, the trail is proving to be a development catalyst, with private sector investment pouring in. Case in point: a new craft brewery recently opened up shop along the old tracks, raising a glass to the next chapter of downtown Kalispell.

Whitefish
The quintessential Northern Rockies resort town WHITEFISH’S LOCATION AT the head of a large valley surrounded by millions of acres of protected wildlands lends this resort town a quietness not commonly found across the Rocky Mountain west. It is growing, however, thanks in large part to widespread recognition of its ski area, Whitefish Mountain Resort. Last winter, readers of SKI Magazine voted Whitefish #1 in “Overall Satisfaction,” which highlights the resort’s commitment to character, community, and the core ski experience. The resort sees an average of 300+ inches of snowfall per year on its 3,000 skiable acres. Like the greater Whitefish Range, the mountain is forested, which means that, even days after a storm, local skiers and snowboarders will still find fresh powder stashes hidden within serene larch and whitebark pine forests. alongside Whitefish River connects downtown, neighborhoods, and Whitefish City Beach. There is a vibrant nightlife, varied restaurant scene, and bustling shopping district in Whitefish. Yet, at three stories high, the Great Northern Brewery is the tallest building in town— which serves as testament to Whitefish’s determination to preserve its small, Western feel. The community is expanding as more people discover its many secrets, but the rich history and deep-set roots mean that the local lifestyle is here to stay.

Before there was a ski area here, Whitefish was just another small logging town on the Great Northern Railway. While residents harvested the dense forest resources, the mountains attracted visitors from the Midwest, Seattle, and beyond. Many stayed—can you blame them? Glacier National Park and Flathead Lake are a quick drive away, as are Canadian towns like Fernie and Kimberley. You barely have to leave the town boundary to explore miles of gorgeously maintained hiking trails, and, within city limits, you’ll find multitudinous golf courses and other green spaces. BLOOMS, BLOSSOMS, and BERRIES: A GUIDE CAMAS Camas, a commonly found Rocky Mountain lily, is no less exceptional for its ubiquity—a namesake road, creek, campground, and lake in Glacier National Park indicate just how beloved this bud is. Beautiful in a dried bundle or fresh bouquet, the purpley-blue camas has long been a food staple for Indigenous peoples. BEARGRASS Perhaps the most distinctive of Montana’s plants, the ivory-white beargrass is neither a grass nor a mainstay of griz diets. Go figure! However oddly named, and however oddly shaped, this beautiful lily has adapted well to the Rocky Mountain environment. Among the first plant species to repopulate wildfire-scorched earth, beargrass is an elegant symbol of nature’s resilience.

Flathead Lake
CRISP, GLACIAL FLATHEAD LAKE is so massive that its currents are influenced by the rotation of the earth—and yet, its shores are strikingly quiet. Lakeside and Somers, neighbors on the northwest shoulder of the lake, sit squarely between beaches and Flathead National Forest. With growing economies, these once-seasonal towns now attract year-round, community-building residents. Polson, population 4,800, commands the southern tip of Flathead Lake. It’s the cherry capital of Montana, with orchards sprawling out to the east and the west. No matter the season, there’s abundant recreation. Healthy trout populations make for some of the region’s best fishing. Blacktail Mountain Ski Area, a beloved community business, is right in the backyard. Miles of groomed Nordic trails offer a serene escape into winter wonderlands, and old logging roads are perfect for snowmobiling in winter, or mountain biking and car-camping in summer. Be warned: It may be difficult to ever pull yourself away from this lake and its refreshing, pristine waters. 48

The biggest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi
FLATHEAD LAKE
FIND YOUR WAY AROUND FLATHEAD LAKE Exploring Flathead Lake might seem daunting. It is, after all, the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi. So where should you start?
1 WEST SHORE STATE
PARK | LAKESIDE Here,
the dramatic shoreline of Flathead Lake is on full display. This is an excellent access point for lake adventures—BYO watercraft, or an on-site concessioner rents out kayaks, canoes, and more.

is accessible only by boat, and the opportunities for wildlife watching, swimming, and hiking are well worth the voyage. (And, yes, wild horses do roam here!)

STATE PARK | FINLEY
POINT Launch your boat
from this park, which is located on the secluded southeastern shore of the lake. While you’re driving there, be sure to stop by a roadside cherry stand for a refreshing snack to eat on the water!

SO FRESH, SO CLEAN When renowned freshwater biologist Jack Stanford first visited Flathead Lake, he says he almost accidentally drove right in. It’s a joke— but, in all seriousness, that’s how clear the water is here. What makes this lake so pure and clean? A majority of the Flathead watershed lies within public lands, including the
million-acre Glacier National Park, and the 1.5 million-acre Bob Marshall Wilderness. The Swan and Flathead Rivers run through this pristine landscape, eventually pouring into Flathead Lake. Their natural stream flow pattern is defined by seasonal snowmelt, which is a crucial factor in the watershed’s character
and overall purity. Through Montana’s long, cold winters, the mountains collect snow, effectively storing water until spring. When the mercury rises, this well-preserved reservoir melts rapidly, flushing the basin with pristine glacial water. If you visit in spring or early summer, you might even observe a plume of river sediment fanning into

the lake—a sign of the river’s power. This deluge contributes to Flathead Lake’s rapid twoyear “retention time,” or, the timespan it takes for all the water in a body to be replaced. Compare this to Lake Tahoe, a deeper lake with a 650-year retention time. CANNONBALL!

SPRING
SUMMER
Catch an indie flick during the Bigfork Independent Film Festival, which screens short, feature, and documentary films with Montana connections. Gasp as the whitewater kayakers and rafters take on the Swan River’s rambunctious “Wild Mile” during the annual Bigfork Whitewater Festival. Blacktail Mountain Ski Area harbors north-facing powder into April. Take a scenic drive along the east side of the lake while the cherry orchards are in full, fragrant bloom. Join a sailing club to participate in casual midweek races, or competitive long-distance events. As the mountains melt out, set off into the Swan Mountains on horseback—there’s a lot of fresh ground to cover.
Lay out your picnic blanket for the Flathead Lake Blues & Music Festival, and also the LIVE! in Lakeside summer concert series. Get patriotic during Bigfork’s famous Fourth of July parade, then ooh and aww over fireworks exploding above the lake. Learn to scuba dive… seriously. Get season tickets to the Bigfork Summer Playhouse, a well-respected repertory theatre that counts Oscar-winning actors among its alumni. Catch the sunset during Margarita Mondays at the Raven, a lively restaurant on Woods Bay. Spend an endless summer day on the lake—at the 48th parallel, there’s a seemingly infinite supply of sunlight.

FALL Tour the Miracle of America Museum, which tends one of the West’s largest collections of American History. Visit the National Bison Range, established in 1908 as a wildlife sanctuary. Step into the time machine at Bigfork’s annual Retrospective Film Festival. Cheer on the participants in the Montana Dragon Boat Race, who sprint across the lake in traditional Cantonese-style canoes to the beat of a drum. Forget leaf-peeping—here, the coniferous Tamarack’s needles turn ochre in autumn. It’s stunning. Don’t let the cooler temperatures deter you from fishing, because the rivers are at their calmest, boosting your chances of landing a monster trout.
FALL: Tamarack Time, a not-so-amateur food competition
WINTER Attend as many screenings as possible during FLIC, the Flathead Lake International Cinemafest, a destination film festival in Polson. Take a soothing detour to Hot Springs, a town named for, well, you know. Find your secret powder stash at Blacktail Mountain Ski Area, while taking in views that reach to Glacier National Park and the Mission Mountains. For an even quieter experience, cruise the local Nordic trails. Feel the rush behind a dog sled by booking a trip with a local outfitter. Volunteer to help the “Bigfork Elves” deck the halls, turning downtown into a veritable Santa’s Village.

bigfork
A community steeped in nature and the arts DEEP WITHIN THE UNTRAMMELED Rocky Mountains, tiny streams converge again and again, flowing into each other, eventually forming Northwest Montana’s two mightiest rivers. The Flathead and Swan Rivers each drain massive glacial watersheds that encompass millions of acres of land—including Glacier National Park, as well as the Bob Marshall and Mission Mountains Wilderness areas. They never converge, but they pour into Flathead Lake just two miles from each other, on the lake’s northeastern shoulder. Here sits the charming, artsy community of Bigfork. Bigfork traces its history back to the mid-1880s, when folks from well-developed settlements south of the lake gathered the resources and gumption necessary to forge this gigantic body of water. Early homesteaders found that plump cherries grew like magic on Flathead Lake’s fertile soils, and, before long, blooming orchards covered the entire east shore. The name of Bigfork’s main street, Electric Avenue, comes from the town’s historical power plant, but it’s also an apt description of life downtown. Arts and film festivals run all year long, and you’ll find a robust roster of galleries, museums, and locally owned boutiques.
The popularity of this area with tourists means that Bigfork, with a population of 4,300, can support a flourishing fine dining and vibrant art culture unlike anything else in the Flathead Valley.

Keen adventurers learn that it takes little effort to find a quiet trailhead and disappear into open country. Summertime brings golf, hiking, camping, and mountain biking. Of course,
there’s also long days spent on Flathead Lake—people swim, sail, ski, and even scuba dive. Restaurants and watering holes perch on the shoreline, creating a social lakeside culture. Come winter, weekends fill up quickly between dog sledding, ice fishing, and cross-country skiing. There’s also nearby Blacktail Mountain Ski Area, which is a family-friendly and locally owned business.

Missoula & the bitterroot A college city with picturesque neighboring towns
IN NORTHWEST MONTANA, where there was once a glacial lake of truly mind-boggling proportions, there is now an undulating, grass and wildflower-covered landscape that 73,400 people call home.
Missoula, named among the Best Towns in America by Outside Magazine, is the region’s biggest city. As Outside put it, Missoula is “a place where people who could live anywhere choose to live.” This means that the city is fresh with innovation, passion, and community-building zeal. Nowhere is the town’s personality better expressed than on the “Hip Strip,” a downtown district where unique and locally owned businesses thrive—think record stores, funky art galleries, breweries, and bike shops. Among outdoors people, the Clark Fork River, which bisects town, is a go-to for easy-access fly-fishing and kayaking. Numerous natural hot springs are close enough to visit on a Sunday afternoon whim. And Missoula’s home ski hill, the Montana Snowbowl, is cherished for its downhome character and challenging terrain. For quieter living, follow the Bitterroot River to the south. The sage-carpeted Bitterroot Valley sits squarely between the Selway-Bitterroot and Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness areas. This means that all the small towns along scenic Route 93,
which travels up the center of the valley, are adjacent to wild country. In warmer months, recreationalists—especially rock climbers—flock to the region’s deep granite canyons. An hour south of Missoula, Hamilton’s historic “Old Town” district feels like a living time capsule. But its well-preserved Western character belies the fact that this is one of Montana’s fastest growing towns. Once a quaint ranching and agricultural community, Hamilton’s economy is diversifying, and its close proximity to the city makes for an effortless commute. In Missoula and the Bitterroot Valley, the past, present, and future of Montana flow together smoothly, framing a culture unlike anywhere else.

MISSOULA & THE BITTERROOT
THE METCALF WILDLIFE REFUGE’S INCREDIBLE NAMESAKE In 1928, on a picturesque 300-acre farm just outside Stevensville, in the Bitterroot Valley, a 17-year-old Lee Metcalf built his own radio set to listen to politics. This scene, of a young, hardworking kid plowing rural fields and then tuning the airwaves to sharpen his thinking, is a perfect metaphor for Metcalf’s career. Montanans who elected him as a U.S. Representative and Senator, deeply appreciated Metcalf’s wellbalanced and fastidious advocacy for the common good. Though he worked on behalf of laborers, veterans’ rights, congressional reform, and education funding, Metcalf is best known for his efforts to preserve the natural environment. As the Butte Standard reported in the early ‘70s, he was “a conservationist when most Americans thought the Sierra Club was a fancy bar.”
PHOTO CREDIT: BOTH: MONTANA HISTORICAL SOCIETY RESEARCH CENTER PHOTOGRAPH ARCHIVES, HELENA, MONTANA
When Metcalf died in early 1978, the Ravalli National Wildlife Refuge, a 2,800-acre sanctuary just two miles north of his childhood hometown, was renamed in his honor. Today, it provides habitat for 242 bird species, 40 mammal species, and 11 reptile and amphibian species, including 45 species of concern. Metcalf, whose ashes were scattered in Montana wilderness, would have loved to visit this beautiful area, which is just a 25-mile drive from Missoula.

SURF’S UP MISSOULA? The Pacific Ocean is some 400 miles from Northwest Montana, but those seeking a swell need travel no further than Missoula. You’ve heard that a river runs through it, right? And this river has waves. The most well-known is Brennan’s Wave, a manmade break on the Clark
FUN FACT:
Fork River that’s formed by an underwater concrete structure. When Brennan’s was built in 2006, local whitewater kayakers dominated the scene. Then came along Idaho-born pro surfer Kevin “KB” Bernhart Brown. In 2008, he opened a surf shop, a five minute’s walk from Brennan’s, where he hand-made custom boards
suited to river riding, which is markedly different from its sister sport. Ocean surfers paddle out to sea and wait for the perfect wave to roll in from the big blue beyond. On a river, the same wave keeps breaking and breaking, endlessly. Surfers can session a single spot for hours, and curious spectators can easily observe from

bozeman A thriving city with a jaw-dropping backdrop
OVER THE LAST few years, Bozeman has been in the national spotlight more often than not, and it’s for good reason. In both 2018 and 2019, this Southwest Montana city won recognition as the country’s #1 strongest “micropolitan” economy. Bozeman has a strong foundation for growth, with a robust tech sector, a fantastic airport, and a generation of brilliant young minds studying at Montana State University. And lest you forget, this powerhouse of a city is also nestled within a region of incomparable natural beauty.
PHOTO CREDIT: JACOB FRANK, YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK
You might think of Montana’s Rocky Mountain backbone when you think of beautiful wilderness areas in the state. But Bozeman finds itself on the east side of the Continental Divide, which lends itself to a more wide-open, endless sky sort of character. Sunrise and sunset are not to be missed— especially in winter, when snow-caked mountaintops bask in the alpenglow. Still, more rain falls here than upon the state’s eastern grasslands, and fertile soils earned Gallatin Valley its nickname, “Valley of the Flowers.” Mountain ranges stack up in succession outside Bozeman, including the Bridgers—made famous by the grassroots, community-owned Bridger Bowl Ski Area—as well as the prominent Absaroka and Beartooth Mountains. Blue-ribbon trout rivers thread through deep ravines, drawing anglers and whitewater rafters alike. In the rugged Hyalite Canyon, a super-short drive from downtown, you’ll find rock climbers, mountain bikers, and backcountry skiers.
This mountainous scenery seamlessly gives way to Yellowstone National Park—Bozeman’s access to the famous national park is a 90-minute drive. Replete with kaleidoscopic hot springs, gushing geysers, and other magnificent geothermal features, Yellowstone’s landscape is endlessly captivating. Both a booming economic hub and a gateway to breathtaking nature, Bozeman is growing steadily, but purposefully. Updated downtown development plans highlight the preservation of what made Bozeman special in the first place: its local commerce, character, and community.

THE HEADWATERS Where it pours into the Mississippi River, just north of St. Louis, the Missouri River is a powerful force. Have you ever traced the current upstream, through a watershed that encompasses more than a half million square miles? The country’s longest river flows through four states. It’s headwaters trickle forth from the crest of the Rocky Mountains in Montana.
In July 1805, Lewis and Clark, traveling upstream on the Missouri with Shoshone guide Sacagawea, reached the end of the river: a famous confluence known as Three Forks. This marked a major
point in their quest to find the best pass through the mountains. As Lewis wrote, here, “the country opens suddenly to extensive and beautiful plains and meadows which appear to be surrounded in every direction with distant and lofty mountains.”
the Missouri now officially begins where the Jefferson and Madison Rivers meet, with the Gallatin River joining in about one mile downstream. (Lewis and Clark agreed upon these names honoring their President and Secretaries of Treasury and State.) Bozeman is a 30 minute’s drive from this epic confluence, which is a state park and a National Historic Landmark.
Because of how dramatically the tributaries have shifted over the years,
THE DINO MUSEUM No bones about it, the Museum of the Rockies houses one of the most fascinating paleontological and natural history collections in the country. The scope of its exhibits reach way back, more than 500 million years, to the formation of Southwest Montana’s geologically rich landscape. Here, the layer of rock dating back to the Mesozoic Era—the age of dinosaurs—simply happens to be sitting at the earth’s surface, where wind, rain, and humans can easily uncover it.

CAN’T MISS: YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK “We’ll believe it when we see it!” 1
Cautious skepticism and utter incredulity met early written accounts of the Yellowstone Region’s geothermic marvels. Today, vivid images of the nation’s oldest national park abound, but if you’re a Yellowstone neophyte, we’d encourage you to hold onto a pinch of salt. This way, when you finally visit, the world-famous volcanic hot spot will be even more astounding—if that’s even possible. For optimal wonderment, might we suggest you visit these five sights?

BIG SKY
big sky
Live between a legendary ski mountain and blue-ribbon river BIG SKY REPRESENTS all there is to love about Montana, the Big Sky State, and not only in name. Situated in a lush alpine valley halfway between West Yellowstone and Bozeman, the views from town will take your breath repeatedly, and often when you least expect it. Though the year-round population tallies under 3,000, the tourism-based economy is always bustling. The Big Sky region comprises three distinct districts, each named for their beautiful natural characteristics.
PHOTO CREDIT: LEFT PAGE: PEAK PHOTOGRAPHY; RIGHT: COURTESY OF BIG SKY RESORT
At the heart of it all is the Meadow, Big Sky’s gathering place. In the shadow of 11,000-foot-tall mountains, the 165acre walking village feels like a scene from a postcard. With all the boutiques, restaurants, galleries, and amenities needed for daily living, you’ll never want for more. That said, the “micropolitan” city of Bozeman is just an hour’s drive away. Besides, it’s the recreation that brings people here. In Big Sky’s front yard, there’s the Canyon. Here flows the Gallatin River. This blue-ribbon river plunges through famous whitewater rapids, glides gently past towering rock formations, and pools in eddies that often harbor massive trout. In the warmer months, rafters and anglers soak up sunny river days—and, even in colder months, hearty fishermen will still be knee-deep, casting for a big one.
In Big Sky’s back yard, there’s the Mountain. Welcome to the Biggest Skiing in America: Big Sky Resort boasts 5,850 skiable acres, 36 lifts, 4,350 vertical feet, and more than 400 inches of annual snowfall. With more acreage than any other resort in the United States, Big Sky delights skiers and snowboarders with terrain for all abilities, from meticulously groomed, family-friendly slopes to the chutes and gullies featured in ski movies. Lone Peak, accessed by a tram perched on a precipitous point, has earned Big Sky its place in skiing lore. You’ll know why when you see it.
THE FUTURE OF BIG SKY, WITH THE VP OF DEVELOPMENT It was the height of summer of 2016, and people weren’t really thinking about skiing—they were golfing and mountain biking and hiking. Brian Wheeler But Big Sky Resort and its owner, Boyne Resorts, dropped a huge announcement: They planned to invest, over the coming ten years, $150 million into infrastructure. That same summer, the resort installed two
new state-of-the-art ski lifts, quickly establishing the tone and pace of the development to come. Now, a few years on, Brian Wheeler, Big Sky’s Vice President of Real Estate and Development, updated Pure Montana about the project, which is called Big Sky 2025: A Focused Vision for the Future. “2025 represents our vision,” he said. “We’re getting close to the mid-point— with the best yet to come. It means expanded terrain, it means an improved
guest experience. It represents holistic growth: we’re not only working on mountain infrastructure, we’re including employee housing, for example, so we can have the best service possible at our restaurants and retail outlets… It sure has bumped property values. And it’s not just appreciation; it’s a better experience for owners when they come to Big Sky. At this point, we are the hottest, fastest-growing ski area in the country. We’re committed to fulfilling that momentum.”

SUMMER
Harvest the spring corn snow on Big Sky Resort until the end of April—it’s a party up there. Pause your golf game to observe a herd of elk. Any Big Sky region golf course, whether part of a private club or open to the public, boasts unbelievable views from every hole. Peruse local galleries, where works of art reflect Southwest Montana’s abundant natural beauty. Cycle on Yellowstone National Park’s roads in the seasonal window, before they open to vehicles. Don’t forget your binoculars… bison calving season is a spectacle, and the park’s wildlife is waking up from winter.
Every Thursday evening, stop by the free, outdoor concert series in town center: Music in the Mountains. Find your flow on Big Sky Resort’s mountain bike trails, whether you’re crushing downhill trails or savoring a mellow ride. Hit the dusty trail in Yellowstone National Park, and you’ll quickly lose the boardwalk tourists. Wander downtown Bozeman during the Sweet Pea Festival, a celebration of art, music, and food. Plan a picnic by a scenic spot, like nearby Ousel Falls, Beehive Basin, or the Uplands Trail. Run the Gallatin River’s most thrilling whitewater rapids—book with a river guide if you’re seeking a big adventure.

ennis
Remote and rustic, this is genuine Montana ENNIS, A TINY TOWN cradled by the Madison River, is known as a working cowboy town with a serious fishing habit. It sits in the valley between the Tobacco Root Mountains, the Gravelly Range, and the Madison Range, so it’s a bit off the beaten path, but it’s well worth the trip. Ennis is best-known for being a fly-fishing and water recreation destination, thanks to robust populations of rainbow and brown trout in the blue-ribbon Madison, as well as the shallow and warm Ennis Lake. Originally homesteaded during the gold rush by William Ennis, the town has a long ranching history. Cattle ranches flank the river, and the town is full of families that have made their living here for generations. But the community is not all cowboy culture—it also hosts an arts festival, fishing festival, and has a small bustling downtown with restaurants serving diverse cuisines.
