PureWest Christie’s has earned an international reputation for real estate excellence. Local experience, as well as our affiliations with Christie’s International Real Estate and Leading Real Estate Companies of the World, means we have the reach and resources to deliver exceptional results every single time. Just as a house is not a home, real estate is not a transaction. It is a relationship with people and place and purpose. We know why you want to live here. It’s why we live here, too. It’s more miles of trail than anyone could explore in a hundred lifetimes. It’s the glacial lakes framed by crooked Whitebark pine. It’s 400 inches of dry powder that falls every winter. And it’s the creative communities—in the cities and small towns alike—that drive Montana forward through constant innovation. The people who choose this

place also choose each other, and the resulting sense of kinship makes our neighborhoods tight-knit. If there’s a better way to live, we haven’t found it. The following pages showcase unique quality homes from every corner of Montana. Flip through, dream a little, and envision living this Montana life. Once imagined, it’s a dream that will stick with you. Our promise is to make it real. Welcome home.

YOU KNOW THE TURN that means home is just around the corner. Maybe it’s the hard left around an ancient Douglas fir. Or the gentle right-hand turn that follows a sparkling creek. Perhaps there’s no turn at all, just a long, arrow-straight road that cruises through wind-tousled grass, leading you straight to your doorstep. Traveling these familiar roads gives you a sense of comfort and certainty that this—right here, right now—is where you’re meant to be. It’s fate; even if you’d taken a different path, you would have ended up right here just the same.

Kurt and Melissa Puckett welcome with open arms anyone who knocks on the door of the Covered Wagon Guest Ranch. Neither of them grew up thinking they’d ever own and operate a family-friendly guest ranch in Southwest Montana, but they wouldn’t have it any other way.
Q&A Pure Montana: Kurt, can you tell us how you found your way to the Covered Wagon? K: My family’s been in the same spot in north Georgia since 1850. I grew up there with cattle and horses on cropland. But I had always wanted to come out west. I remember going up the canyon the first time, in the spring of 1998. It’s beautiful. It was snowing big 10

snowflakes. At the Covered Wagon, I jumped in a pickup with Will King, the owner at the time, and drove down to the corrals. He said, “Go catch that horse.” It was kind of old-school. He offered me a job as a wrangler, and I lived in a cabin by the creek, making $650 a month. I was happy as a pig. That summer, the Covered Wagon got in my blood.

PM: And how did you come to own the guest ranch? K: After a few years, I went to work for a big cow outfit, Sitz Angus in Harrison, Montana. That’s when I met Melissa. In 2011, the owners of Covered Wagon called, saying they’d like to retire. By then, Melissa and I wanted to have a family, and the Covered Wagon was home to me. It had my heart. We
bought the former owners out completely by spring of 2013. My family’s been in Georgia a long time—my mom and dad were raised a half-mile apart—so it took them a while to warm up to the idea of me being out here. But once they came here, and saw the passion I had for this place, they knew I wasn’t coming back down to the south.
Q&A
PM: Melissa, what about your Montana roots? M: I’m not nearly as complicated. K: I don’t know about that. M: (laughing) Well, my family on both sides ranched in central Montana. My grandmother was like my whole world; she took me under
her wing and put horses in my brain. Her and my mom both rodeoed. They’re big horse people for sure. I went to school in Dillon to become a teacher and met Kurt when I graduated. He talked me into moving into the canyon. Originally, I told him my grandfather would be rolling over in his grave if he knew I was going to work at a guest ranch—my fam-
ily is not big into tourism, they’re into locals and family. But then Kurt showed me the place, and I could see how much he loved it. I fell in love with it, too, and decided to go in with him on it. He told me, “The guests will change your life. You’ll cry when they leave.” I thought, there’s no way I’m going to cry when some yahoo from the city leaves. Our P U R E M O N TA N A

first guests were a couple on their honeymoon from the United Kingdom. Sure enough, I was crying my eyes out when they left. I’m still friends with her today. PM: What makes the Covered Wagon unique? M: Kurt says there’s just a special feeling, which I never understood until I came

here, but now I have to back him up on that, 100 percent. To us, the ranch is home, but a lot of guests consider it their home, too. K: People come back every year. Maybe they miss a year here and there, but some of them have been coming for 40-plus years. We’re not scheduled; it’s a place where people come and get to take a step back. We sit down with a cup of coffee, have a conversation, and bring them into our world. We just visit. M: In the mornings, we figure out what they want to do for the day. Go for a full-day ride. Relax in the morning and go for a hike after lunch. Go someplace with a view. Trailer out of the ranch. Over half the guests are experienced riders, but if they’re a brand-new beginner, we’re known for our teaching program. K: And we push our horsemanship. With a lot of our 12

horses, we can rope a cow and then turn around and put a 6-year-old on it. We’re overly passionate. M: We raise and train performance and ranch horses. We hold them to the highest regard possible. It’s what we’re known for. It’s our passion, our love. PM: What kind of childhood do you hope to give to your kids? M: Kurt and I grew up similar, 2,500 miles apart. It’s important to continue the tradition of being raised on a ranch, with those values. His momma and my dad come from big families, and the Covered Wagon, it’s like having a big extended family. We call our longtime guests bonus grandparents because a lot of them have literally watched our kids grow up. K: We want our boys to know what it means to work hard. They’re more

technologically advanced than I am—even at age 6 and 3—but we try to balance that with the old-school. We want them to be outside, work down at the barn, and learn the value of a good day’s work. Then, at the end
of the day, we all eat dinner together-family style: guests, crew, everybody at the same table. M: I think in today’s world, it’s important to teach them how to look people in the
eye, shake their hand, have a meal with them. People are just people. It doesn’t matter what their background is; that’s one of my all-time favorite things about the Covered Wagon. We have people who could own the
state of Montana, and people who saved up five years to come to the ranch, and when they sit down together at dinner, they become great friends. It’s the best feeling in the world to see that.

PUREWEST GIVES BACK What makes a house a home? What makes a neighborhood a community? We think it’s about the love you put in, the bonds you grow, and the commitment of working towards a better future. At PureWest, we build relationships for life, and for our agents, that means devoting their time and resources to local organizations, including these three, which deserve a special shout-out for the good work they do:
The Gallatin Valley Food Bank The Gallatin Valley Food Bank is the critical link between food and the people who need it. Last year, this food bank distributed more than 2 million pounds of food to area families and nonprofit organizations. Every fall, the Montana State University 14

MSU Bobcats community “won”, collecting 437,265 pounds of food. The PureWest offices in Bozeman and Missoula together collected 7,809 pounds of food—including 5,000 pounds of potatoes donated by a local ranch.
The Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital The Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital, in Hamilton, provides advanced, accessible, and quality healthcare in rural Ravalli County. In spring 2019, the hospital unveiled a new 26,000-square foot surgery center. The highlight? A DaVinci
robotic-assisted surgical system. The robot’s tiny instruments bend and twist exactly like a human hand, meaning the physician-operated device can translate the surgeon’s movements in real-time. The new center is a “quantum leap”
from the old facilities, as the chief of surgery told local news. The Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital Foundation, established in 2001, was essential for making this $15 million improvement possible through its philanthropic efforts.

EVERY SEASON IN
GLACIER NATIONAL PARK
From the lowest river valleys to the tallest rocky summits, Glacier National Park hums with the spirit of wilderness enchantment. Mountain goats skip down secret, dizzying trails cut across sedimentary cliffs. Grizzly bears lumber through thick huckleberry patches. Westslope Cutthroat Trout fight their way up sparkling alpine streams to set yet another life cycle in motion. Here in the “Crown of the Continent,” as the ecosystem encompassing Glacier Park is called, human visitors immerse themselves in a pristine northern Rocky Mountain landscape.
SPRING Glacier’s centerpiece, the Going-to-the-Sun Road, shines in spring. This road begins in West Glacier, at the foot of McDonald Lake, which sits in the park’s lowest valley. The smooth pavement climbs nearly 5,000 feet over 21 winding miles to Logan Pass and the Continental Divide. Cyclists travel through dense cedar-hemlock forests, above precipitous cliffs, under the wildflower-studded Garden Wall, and, finally, into the subalpine, where faraway mountain summits appear at eye level. During the summer, this road is popular among motorists, but before it’s fully cleared of snow, only two-wheeled travel is permitted, giving cyclists an opportunity to freewheel through Glacier’s beauty all by themselves.
SUMMER Glacier’s backcountry is never more accessible than during summer. If we had to pick one trail to recommend… well, we can’t. Here’s our top three: 1. Visit the Grinnell Glacier Trail in the Many Glacier Valley to be gobsmacked by glacial lakes in all their shimmering teal and turquoise glory. 2. Meandering through the high meadows of Logan Pass, the Hidden Lake Overlook ushers visitors to one of Glacier’s most iconic views. 3. Experience the company of 500-year-old trees by following the Trail of the Cedars boardwalk into a lush, mossy forest. This looped trail’s highlight is the bridge over the churning waters of lower Avalanche Gorge.

FALL Fall is a season of uncommon beauty. The first dusting of snow in the alpine highlights the contours of the high peaks, moody weather patterns dramatize scenic overlooks, and the forests glow with vibrant color. On the east side of the Continental Divide, lemon-lime aspen groves shimmer in the breeze, while Tamarack needles on the west side burst into sunflower-orange before falling to the ground. Though a quieter season for human visitors, fall in Glacier is a bustling time for plant and animal life. Bring binoculars to observe wildlife making preparations for the hard winter ahead.
WINTER When Glacier’s roads and trailheads are buried under snow, vast portions of the park become untouchable. But this gives visitors the opportunity to explore the edges of the park so easily overlooked during warmer months. Snow is considered a durable surface, so with proper trip-planning and gear, you can wander wherever you’d like off-trail, discovering secret spots of solitude. Keep an eye out for tracks in the snow—it may feel quiet now, but life goes on for local wildlife. Visitors without skis or snowshoes can still drive up the serene North Fork Valley, or visit the shores of Lake McDonald to watch evening alpenglow alight the white canvases of mountains overlooking this valley.

NORTHWEST MONTANA
NORTHWEST MONTANA begins where an ocean of prairie smacks suddenly into the Rocky Mountain front. Here, you’ ll find valleys car ved from glaciers and limestone mountains with cragg y summits. The Continental Divide slices through the heart of the Bob Marshall W ilderness and Glacier National Park, which together constitute one of the largest, most intact and bio-diverse ecosystems of its kind. Human inhabitants between West Glacier, the national park’s main gate, and Eureka, the final outpost before the Canadian border, enjoy seclusion and serenity within the region’s undulating topography. An off-grid and independent-minded community in the North Fork Valley revolves around the rustic outpost of Polebridge, where
you’ ll find world-famous baked huckleberr y treats. In the cradle of the F lathead Valley sit three of Montana’s fastest growing towns. Kalispell, the seat of F lathead County, is the geographical, cultural, and economic center of the region. W hitefish, with bountiful outdoor recreation opportunities in the nearby mountains and lakes, is the region’s resort town. Columbia Falls, overlooking the main stem of the F lathead River, is a former logging town seamlessly transitioning into a more diverse, tourism-oriented community. W hether you’re drawn to a downtown townhome or a property at the end of a long back road, Northwest Montana is a place to experience western woods and thriving communities. P U R E M O N TA N A

Your “Parkitecture” Primer
Because the man-made sights in Glacier National Park are worth scoping, too Two distinct architectural styles dominate the mountainous landscape of this national park: I. At its inception, Glacier Park was dubbed “America’s Switzerland,” so, naturally, its first lodges were built in the Swiss chalet-style. Hallmarks include gabled roofs and wide eaves, ornamental wooden balconies, massive fireplaces, large windows, exposed timber beams, and weatherboard siding. Case Study: Built on the shores of Swiftcurrent Lake in the early 1900s by the Great Northern Railway, the Many Glacier Hotel was known as “The Jewel of the Rockies.” In 2017, the park completed a $40 million historic renovation.

II. During the economic boom following World War II, visitation skyrocketed at national parks, overwhelming the small, rustic log cabins that served as visitor’s centers. Architects moved away from classic styles to embrace more modern elements like sleek glass and steel, as well as designs showcasing natural light and open-air spaces. Case Study: In the early 1960s, designers of the visitor’s center at Logan Pass knew that the structure needed to be big enough to accommodate millions of guests per year—it was never going to be able to blend into its surroundings. And yet, it strikes a modern, elegant harmony with the landscape.

olf is “a passion, an obsession, a romance, a nice acquaintanceship with trees, sand and water,” as American sportswriter Bob Ryan famously described a game that is so much more than a mere pastime. If golf is your way of life, you’d be wise to acquaint yourself with the Flathead’s best fairways: The Buffalo Hill Golf Club has called Kalispell home for more than a century. Its Championship 18 delivers scenic splendor, while the Cameron Nine is one of Montana’s most challenging nine-hole courses. Rated by Golf Digest among Montana’s top 10 courses in 2019/20, the Northern Pines Golf Club links-style course is regarded for its natural feel. The namesake Ponderosa pines
create a sense of privacy and serenity, while the peaceful Stillwater River flows by the back nine. Designed by Bill Robinson, the meticulous Village Greens Golf Course spans gently rolling hills close to downtown Kalispell. With challenging options for golfers of all abilities, everyone can enjoy the spectacular mountain views. Just to the north, in Whitefish, the Iron Horse Golf Club “may just be the last best place for mountain golf,” Tom Fazio has said. Iron Horse member homesites are within striking distance of Whitefish Lake and Whitefish Mountain Resort. You’ll find other beautiful greens in Columbia Falls, Bigfork, and elsewhere in the Flathead Valley.

This year-round resort town has a neighborly atmosphere

WHITEFISH
T H IS RESORT TOWN sits at the foot of cr ystal-clear W hitefish Lake, and at the head of the F lathead Valley. This sweeping watershed is surrounded on all sides by forested mountains and public land. The high peaks of the nearby northern Rocky Mountains are mostly hidden from sight—but from some spots, like the bridge over the railroad that begat W hitefish, you can catch dramatic peek-a-boo views. Originally, this town grew as a small logging outpost along the Great Northern Railway. P lucky pioneering residents hauled their skis up to the Big Mountain above
town, and before long, the entire community pitched in to establish a ski area for ever ybody. Last winter, readers of SKI magazine voted W hitefish Mountain Resort No. 1 for “L ocal F lavor,” No. 2 in “ Value,” and No. 3 overall best ski resort in North America. D ue to its proximity to Glacier National Park, W hitefish draws even more tourism in the summer than the winter. Indeed, the community is expanding as more people discover this region, but W hitefish’s rich histor y and deep-set roots mean that a local lifestyle is here to stay. P U R E M O N TA N A

All Roads Lead Home: Whitefish
I
f you call the jewel of Northwest Montana home, the best part of a road trip may very well be pulling back into your driveway. If you have an evening… Whitefish curls around the outlet of Whitefish Lake, which is six miles long. The much smaller, more secluded Upper Whitefish Lake is the perfect quick getaway to clear your mind—it is just an hour north of town in the Stillwater State Forest. As it climbs upstream, this Beargrasslined road looks out towards the roundshouldered Salish Mountains. 36

//
If you have a day… The Canadian Rockies are within reach. Fernie, Whitefish’s sister city, is one right-hand turn and two hours away. Visit for the world-class skiing and mountain biking at Fernie Alpine Resort, in the Lizard Mountains. After a big day, refuel at the colorful Himalayan Spice Bistro. The route to Fernie, which follows the Elk River valley, is easily traveled any time of year. If you have a weekend… The ultimate road-trip loop in Northwest Montana connects two iconic roads.

We recommend beginning on Highway 2 in West Glacier and traveling east up the Middle Fork Flathead River canyon. Stay a night in East Glacier Village or St. Mary before driving back, west-bound on the Going-to-the-Sun Road, which cuts through the absolute glory of Glacier National Park. Give yourself time to stop along the road more than a few times. Going further afield… The Glacier Park International Airport (FCA) in Kalispell hosts five airlines and serves 13 major cities.

WHITEFISH
The Rise of Mountain Modern Meredith, of InnSpace, discusses how she’d like to see this popular trend evolve
“M
ountain modern is generally a muted, neutral palette, with mixed materials and textures. The materials are the pops of color on a neutral background— like exposed beams. It’s an open floor plan. It’s bringing the outside in, and extending the outdoor living space. A light and open, airy design. You’ll see comfy furniture, with sheepskin, and other luxe materials, on upholstery. And warm, cozy blankets. We can add more pop. I’m ready for more color: on the walls, the furniture, maybe the cabinetry. I’m not saying to add color to every surface. I’d just like to see more of it. What if you had a really fun rug? I would add more patterns, too. Make it a little more eclectic. Give it a pop of creativity. People need to take more chances, be more
whimsical. I like when people make ‘mountain modern’ their own—not a space where it feels like anybody could live there. We don’t need to bring back nick-knacks or family photos plastered all over the space, but maybe include a family heirloom, or something special you picked up while traveling. Add things that have meaning, anything you love. I do appreciate a good cowhide rug, and big, oversized sofas. Sheepskin is still one of my favorite materials. It’s neat to see exposed natural elements. Just find a better blend between rustic and sleek, and then make it your own. I like when people think outside the box, like painting their antler chandelier. Put a spin on something. Do your own take.” P U R E M O N TA N A

F lathead Lake
Relax by the shores of the largest freshwater lake in the West
GLACIAL FLATHEAD LAKE is so massive that its currents are influenced by the rotation of the earth. Welcome to the biggest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi. Crisp and clean, its shores are uncommonly serene. Northwest Montana’s two mightiest rivers, the Swan and the F lathead, supply the lake with its characteristically pristine waters. To the east, the Swan and Mission Mountain ranges climb straight up from the lakeshore, providing a dramatic backdrop for alpenglow. The friendly towns of Lakeside and Somers, neighbors on the northwest shoulder of the lake, sit squarely between beaches and abundant F lathead National Forest land. and locally owned business, is right in the backyard. On the lake’s northeast corner, you’ ll find Bigfork, a tight-knit community that draws enough tourism to support a vibrant fine dining and arts culture. The name of Bigfork’s main street, Electric Avenue, comes from the town’s historical power plant, but it ’s also an apt description of life downtown. Polson commands the southern tip of F lathead Lake. About halfway between W hitefish and Missoula, it ’s a well-positioned town that originally made its name as a steamship port. Today, the F lathead Lake area is known as the cherr y capital of Montana, with sprawled-out orchards infusing the summer air with the sweet smell of a bloom.

ith 161 miles of uncrowded shoreline, Flathead Lake is a mariner’s dream. Two mountain ranges to the east, the Swans and the Missions, shape consistent wind patterns. “Flathead Lake has the finest sailing on the North American continent,” Dayton Yacht Harbor owner Jim Lekander has said. Newcomers overwhelmed by seemingly endless coves, inlets, and islands to explore will want to start here:

better embodied than at the Raven, a colorful and carefree waterfront restaurant with an onsite dock.

Flathead History Nugget: In 1970, at 21 years of age, Robin Lee Graham, now a resident of Somers, became the youngest person ever to sail around the globe solo. It took him five years to complete the adventure. The book and movie “The Dove” are based on his story. P U R E M O N TA N A

Breathing Fire
Forget about Flathead Nessie folklore. You’re more likely to see a dragon on the biggest freshwater lake in the West.
T
he legend of dragon boat racing goes way back—like, 2,000 years—to China’s Warring States period. As the story goes, the poet Qu Yuan threw himself into the Milou River in a protest of government corruption. Racing to save him, local fishermen plied their long, narrow boats across the river’s churning waters, but they were too late. The following year, a dragon boat race was held to commemorate Qu Yuan’s impactful life—he is regarded as China’s first people’s poet. In the mid-1970s, the Hong Kong tourism association revitalized this legend with modern competitive flair, staging the inaugural International Dragon Boat Festival. Requiring 54

synchronicity, power, and finesse, dragon boat racing is now one of the world’s fastest-growing sports. It’s becoming popular even in faraway corners of the globe… like Flathead Lake, where an annual Dragon Boat Festival has been hosted since 2011. In dragon boat racing, teams of 20 paddlers (plus a steerer and a drummer) paddle 46-foot Hong Kong-style boats. Last year, attendees loved the Riveting Rosies, who sported matching red bandanas; and the Silver Linings, Montana’s first official breast cancer team. On the shoreline, crowds of up to 6,000 spectators—hailing from across Montana, Canada, and the West—go wild.

The Lowdown on “Lake Living” Style
Hunter Dominick, of Hunter & Company Interior Design, dishes on designing functional exterior spaces for lakefront homes
“W
hat I spend a lot of time doing for lake homes is creating what I call interior spaces on the exterior, which ties together architecture, interiors, and landscape. With outdoor furniture, it’s so easy to transform an exterior space, connect it to the interior, and make it functional. An outdoor sofa, chair, and coffee table set-up can be just as comfortable as your living room. People often have phenomenal proximity to the water that can be used much more functionally with some minor tweaks. It can be as simple as stringing up patio lights, because now you can use the space into the later hours of the night.
Over the past few years, trends have gone from really rustic to very contemporary, and now I feel like we’re back to what’s important, back to function. Which looks like a really rustic Adirondack chair made by a guy in Polebridge that’s sitting in front of a contemporary home. The dining design can be as raw as a picnic table with some fabulous place settings, or as fancy as a Dedon table. The trend is creating space for communal gathering, rather than a particular aesthetic. Everybody’s living this rat race of a life, but at the lake, people want to decompress, slow down, and come together at the table.” P U R E M O N TA N A

DEEP WI T H I N T H E UNT RAMMELED Rocky Mountains, tiny streams converge again and again, flowing into each other, eventually forming Northwest Montana’s two mightiest rivers. The F lathead and Swan Rivers each drain massive glacial watersheds that encompass millions of acres of land— including Glacier National Park, as well as the Bob Marshall and Mission Mountains W ilderness areas. They never meet before pouring into F lathead Lake, their outlets just two miles from each other on the lake’s northeastern shoulder. Here sits Bigfork, a small community with rich Montana histor y and a creative culture. Bigfork traces its histor y back to the mid1880s, when folks from well-developed settle-
ments south of the lake gathered the resources and gumption necessar y to forge this gigantic body of water. Early homesteaders found that plump cherries grew like magic on F lathead Lake’s fertile soils, and, before long, blooming orchards covered the entire east shore. As the settlement grew, the lakeside lifestyle and inspiring scener y attracted many new residents. Today, arts and film festivals run all year long, and you’ ll find a robust roster of galleries, museums, and locally owned boutiques. The popularity of this area with tourists means that Bigfork, with a year-round population just over 4,000, supports a flourishing fine dining and vibrant art culture unlike anything else in the F lathead Valley.

Missoula & the Bitterroot From a colorful college town to classic Montana communities, the west-central region has it all
MISSOULA & THE BITTERROOT
NEAR T H E CONFLUENCE of three Montana rivers, where there was once a glacial lake of truly mind-boggling proportions, you’ ll find Missoula, home to some 75,000 people. Named among the Best Towns in America by O utside magazine, Missoula is “a place where people who could live anywhere choose to live.” This attracts creatives and innovators, fuels the University of Montana, and translates into an atmosphere buzzing with community-minded energ y. Nowhere is the city ’s personality better expressed than the “Hip Strip,” a downtown district home to thriving, unique, and locally owned businesses. Follow the Bitterroot River upstream, to the south, and into the sage-carpeted Bitterroot 68

Valley. Here, communities sandwiched between the Selway-Bitterroot and Anaconda-Pintler W ilderness areas, offer quick access to alpine lakes and steep-walled granite canyons. An hour south of Missoula, Hamilton’s historic “Old Town” district feels like a living time capsule. But the well-preser ved Western character belies the fact that Hamilton is one of Montana’s fastest-growing towns. Once a quaint ranching and agricultural community, Hamilton’s economy is diversifying, and its close proximity to the city makes for an effortless commute. The past, present, and future of Montana flow together smoothly in Missoula and the Bitterroot Valley to create a culture unlike anywhere else.

t’s hard to want to leave this eclectic, colorful city but you’ll treasure your time away from home on these three road trips. If you have an evening… Hop on Route 93 in Missoula heading south, into the Bitterroot Valley, then turn onto Highway 12 heading west. Thirty-seven miles later, you’ll reach Lolo Hot Springs Resort, where a restorative session in the 106-degree mineral waters will cure any ache, pain, or worry. If you have a day… Beginning at an intersection with Montana Highway 200, scenic Route 83 travels up the quiet Seeley-Swan Valley corridor through Lolo and Flathead National Forests, connecting Missoula with Bigfork. The Swan Mountains to the east and the Missions to the west are
equally stunning ranges. You’ll pass by hundreds of lakes on the Swan Highway, with ample opportunities for picnicking. If you have a weekend… When the road conditions permit, drive south to the Bitterroot Valley and travel through the Sapphire Mountains, over scenic Skalkaho Pass. The pass itself is wooded, but the views open up as the road drops down towards the small town of Philipsburg, which is known for its charming historic district. Spend the night here—you’ll need the time to stop by the award-winning local brewery, historic candy store, and sapphire-mining attraction. Going further afield… The Missoula International Airport (MSO) in Missoula hosts six airlines and serves 13 major cities.

MISSOULA & THE BITTERROOT
Better in the Bitterroot
You may have heard all about the river that runs through it, but don’t overlook the mountains here In Hamilton, the evening sun sets behind the Bitterroot Range, a rugged segment of the Rocky Mountains that’s characterized by deep forests and even deeper canyons. As Montana’s largest mountain range, there’s plenty here to explore. But where to begin…
Blodgett Canyon Overlook | 3 miles There are dozens of high-walled canyons in the Bitterroot region, but there’s nothing else quite like this trail. Short, sweet, and close to town, the magnificent views from the overlook showcase the dramatic glacier-carved landscape.
St. Mary Peak | 8 miles With views that go on forever, this is perhaps one of the best panoramas of the Bitterroot Valley. You can even see into the Idaho backcountry to the west. A decommissioned fire lookout graces the summit of this 9,351-foot mountain.
Kootenai Creek Trail #53 | 20 miles This grade is gentle at first, but the trail soon steepens, climbing up into the granite mountains. You may travel the full length of the trail to reach the Kootenai Creek headwater lakes or go only as far as any of the enticing, springfed swimming holes along the way.
To dig deeper into Bitterroot-area hiking, the guidebook “Hiking the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness” by Scott Steinberg is a wealth of information about this rugged backcountry zone. 70

MISSOULA & THE BITTERROOT
Railroad Roots in Missoula PureWest’s office location speaks to our strong connection to local history and community Sitting at the end of Railroad Street in historic downtown Missoula, the PureWest office occupies an iconic corner that played an essential role in the city’s development. In 1883, the Northern Pacific reached this small trading post of a town, transforming it practically overnight into the region’s industrial and commercial city center. In 1901, a passenger rail depot was built at the end of North Higgins Avenue by the Minnesota architecture firm that designed more than 100 depots in America, including Grand Central Station. The Grand Pacific Hotel opened across the street a year later. Where the original restaurant, bar, and hotel lobby were, you’ll find PureWest’s office today. The hotel operated under different names—Kennedy Hotel, Park Hotel—until the mid-1970s, when it finally closed. In 1983, it was listed on the National Historic Register. It’s
one of only a handful of remaining hotels associated with Missoula’s railroad boom. Its aesthetic hasn’t changed very much in more than a century’s time. We’ve called it home since fall 2016. From our office’s east-facing windows, we can see out to Circle Square, which is visually dominated by the “Crossings” sculpture, paying homage to Missoula’s railroad roots. Conceptualized by Arlee-based artist Taäg Peterson, the sculpture’s design of four 12-foot-high X-shaped steel brackets recalls railroad trestles. The Xs are bright red, a nod to the depot’s brick construction. From spring to fall, when the famous Missoula Farmer’s Market is open for business, we can walk past the Xs for an afternoon treat: fresh produce, local cheese, flowers, honey, and pastries such as frosted raspberry hand pies.

EVERY SEASON IN
YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK
Here in America’s first national park, the magic of nature is on full display. About 20 times per day, Old Faithful erupts a skyscraper of steam and searing water—and after you’ve checked this famous geyser off the list, you’ll only have 9,999 more geothermal features to visit! Amid the northern grasslands, the Grand Prismatic hisses and steams in technicolor. Thermal flows at Mammoth Hot Springs sculpt alien-looking terraces, where colorful algae make their home in scalding pools. Aside from these famous sights, smaller wonders await visitors of Yellowstone National Park around every bend in the road or switchback in the trail.
SPRING This is a season of dramatic differences and rapid change. Winter holds on tight in the high country, where skis remain the best tool for efficient travel. Down low, however, the valley bottoms emerge anew from under the melting snow, and early-season hikers in the Lamar Valley may be lucky enough to witness bison or pronghorn calving. Meadows alight in yellow and purple as buttercups, glacier lilies, and shooting stars poke through the soil. As campgrounds and roads open up, visitors make themselves at home here for the first time in months.
SUMMER During Yellowstone’s busiest season, slip away from the boardwalk crowds and into the backcountry for a stay at one of 300 designated backcountry campsites. Adventurous visitors who forge out beyond the roadside attractions are rewarded with a deeper sense of this park’s grandeur. You don’t need to trek for days into the deep woods—find solitude only five miles from Artist Point at the peaceful lily pad-covered Ribbon Lake, where you might catch a Great Blue Heron taking flight. When night falls, sit by the shore to soak up this precious solitude under the enormous night sky.

To plan your trip to Yellowstone National Park, visit www.nps.gov/yell for current conditions, recreation resources, and more information.
FALL As the days grow shorter, it gets easier to wake up with the sun. You might find yourself awakened early, in any case— beginning in September, herds of mating elk greet every morning with a chorus of bugles. Meanwhile, bison wander down to lower elevations as snow dusts the mountaintops, and migrating birds fill the skies above. The park’s interior roads close to vehicles in early November, giving cyclists full reign of the pavement before the snows come. Covering ground quickly and quietly, there’s no better way than bicycle to experience the season’s crisp, cool air and witness the changes and critters of autumn.
WINTER Old Faithful doesn’t care what season it is—this iconic geyser erupts whether or not there’s a crowd assembled to ooh and ahh. Visitors, who travel by snowcoach, snowmobile, snowshoe, and ski, witness how the areas surrounding Yellowstone’s geothermal features take on new life in the grip of winter. When hot steam billows into the sky, the chilly temps freeze airborne water molecules, creating showers of snow crystals that slowly fall to the ground, glimmering. Nearby trees morph into “snow ghosts,” as layers upon layers of hydrothermal steam harden on their boughs. Furry bison accumulate a winter’s worth of snow on their coats. Delightfully, the curious sunshine-yellow monkey flower continues to bloom amid the white wonderland.
Bozeman
The rising star of Montana, a thriving city in a jaw-dropping setting
BOZEMAN
YOU MIGHT THINK OF MONTANA’S Rocky Mountain backbone when you think of impressive wilderness areas in the state. But Bozeman finds itself on the east side of the Continental Divide, which lends itself to a more wide-open, endless sky character, where sunrise and sunset command your attention. Still, the mountains appear endless, and the Gallatin’s fertile soils earned it the nickname, “ Valley of the F lowers.” O ver the last few years, Bozeman has been in the national spotlight more often than not, and it ’s for good reason. In both 2018 and 2019, the city won recognition as the countr y ’s #1 strongest “micropolitan” economy. Bozeman has 82

a strong foundation for growth, with a robust tech sector and well-connected airport. There’s also a new generation of brilliant young minds studying at Montana State University—although just as many young people are drawn to Bozeman by the ski culture made famous by the grassroots, communityowned Bridger Bowl Ski Area. Just over an hour away from Yellowstone National Park, Bozeman is both a booming economic hub and a gateway to breathtaking nature. Downtown development plans highlight the preser vation of what made Bozeman special in the first place: its local commerce, character, and community.

it the wide-open road for these bucket-list trips within reach of this well-positioned Southwest Montana city. The Hyalite Canyon Road follows a creek by the same name, slowly gaining elevation as it winds deeper into the Gallatin National Forest. If you have a day… History isn’t hard to see in Southwest Montana. A Caffeine Dream Bozeman is for coffee-lovers
F
or much of the last decade, Gallatin County has been one of the fastest-growing counties in Montana and the United States. What’s the secret? Perhaps it’s the locally roasted coffee.
• On the north side of Bozeman, in the Mill District, Treeline has been “fearlessly roasting” since 2013. Founder Natalie Van Dusen’s coffee obsession dates back to a motorcycle adventure in Colombia, where she first learned about growing and fresh roasting from a local farmer. • With a focus on ethical and equitable trade, Ghost Town roasts specialty coffee from around the world. In collaboration with nearby Willie’s Distillery, in Ennis, Ghost Town’s Bourbon Barrel Conditioned blend is a signature 84

with distinct local flavor. • The owners of Rockford, Ryan and Kristin Wilson, moved to Bozeman from Seattle in 2004, and quickly built a loyal following for their solid, no-frills artisan coffee. Their roastery is also known for giving back to the community. So, where to go to get a cuppa? Coke Smoke Coffee House is frequently voted Bozeman’s best, and for good reason. Count on a fresh, seasonal, and frequently rotating selection. And what about the tea lovers? Townshend’s Teahouse has just the right atmosphere—as well as a selection of more than 100 top-grade loose-leaf teas, including classics, chai, herbal medicinals, bubble tea, and more.

Only Bozeman is Good Enough Since 1989, Gibson Guitars has manufactured acoustic instruments in Southwest Montana

O
n the west side of Bozeman, at 1894 Orville Way, luthiers bend over workbenches. They shape guitars. They sand guitars. They inspect guitars. Every instrument that leaves their hands and heads out into the world from Gibson’s small Southwest Montana factory is arguably a work of art. In 1894, Orville Gibson began crafting and selling string instruments out of his home on East Main Street in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Thanks to an innovative flat-backed mandolin design, Gibson soon became a household name among musicians, but it wasn’t until after World War II that the company’s star rose to mainstream prominence. Their mid-century designs have become iconic—like the Les Paul,
a solid body electric guitar. During the seventies and eighties, production moved down to Nashville, Tennessee, where Gibson’s electric guitars are still manufactured today. In the late eighties, a group of businessmen acquired the company and decided to have the southeast factory concentrate exclusively on Les Pauls and other best sellers. A mandolin-maker who lived in Belgrade persuaded Gibson’s new owners to bring acoustic production to Bozeman. Today, custom machinery occupies some of the warehouse floor, but this is no mass-production facility—it’s a workshop with genuine Bozeman personality, striking exactly the right note between creativity and craftsmanship. BOZEMAN
7424 BRIDGER CANYON ROAD, BOZEMAN 7424 Bridger Canyon Road is a true legacy property, rich in history and natural amenities, privately located in a natural sunny bow of the breathtaking and famed Bridger Canyon just minutes away from the thriving downtown of Bozeman and Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport. Native Americans revered what is now Bozeman and the Gallatin Valley as “the valley of flowers”. The Bridger Mountain Range and Bridger Bowl Ski Area are named for legendary mountain man, Jim Bridger, who brought his first mule train through this pass in 1864. Bridger Canyon holds access to the vast Gallatin National Forest, drawing those who love the outdoors; alpine skiers and snowboarders wanting to savor the “cold smoke” at Bridger Bowl, as well as mountain bikers, hikers, and naturalists accessing the vast public trails and mountain ridges. The property itself consists of 46 acres of blended forests and fields, 2 stocked ponds, 1,000 ft of private Bridger Creek frontage, 15 buildings for gatherings of family and friends
including a hip guest cabin, a 100-year-old farmhouse, a restored red barn and the historic Bridger Canyon dance hall, the heartbeat of the canyon used for decades by Bridger Canyon families as their community meeting place for dancing and pie socials. The main home, designed by local distinguished architect, Van K. Bryan and built by Swanson Construction in 2008, is an elegant take on the mountainmodern farmhouse. At approximately 7,600 sq ft, the main house has 5 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms, gourmet kitchen, 1,000 bottle wine cellar, butler’s pantry, formal and informal dining areas, wood-paneled den, bonus rooms, and a screened in porch with a dual-sided, wood-burning stone fireplace. This property is truly a once-in-a-lifetime investment opportunity for the sophisticated buyer seeking an extraordinary Montana lifestyle with easy access to the culturally rich and vibrant community of Bozeman. $7,185,000 // MLS# 338182 // MICHAEL THOMAS 406.581.2400 & WALLIS BRYAN 406.223.4778

Big Sky
Welcome to Montana’s quintessential recreation town
BIG SKY
THE BLUE-RIBBON GALLATIN RIVER churns through towering rock formations, pooling in eddies that often harbor massive trout. From the river’s edge, head west and drive up the lush alpine valley towards L one Peak (you’ ll know it when you see it) to experience Big Sky. This community ’s histor y is unique for Montana—the town didn’t spring from a mining claim, logging camp, or railroad outpost. At the turn of the 20th centur y, a smattering of homesteaders staked their claim in the region and maintained the quiet status quo for some 70 years. Then, in 1973, the Montanaborn news broadcaster Chet Huntley founded Big
Sky Resort, in a bid to return to his roots, relax in the mountains, and “get these damn deadlines off my neck,” as he famously declared. Huntley passed away before seeing his resort flourish, but it has become a destination for visitors and a home for locals who live out his dream. It won’t take you long to see why Big Sky Resort has earned its place in mountain culture lore. In the shadow of the Madison Range and Spanish Peaks, Big Sky ’s 165-acre walking village feels like a scene from a postcard. This resort town represents all there is to love about Montana, the Big Sky state, and not only in name. P U R E M O N TA N A

BIG SKY
A Skier’s Guide to Big Sky Here’s how you should ride America’s Alp
Green Circle From the Mountain Village, hop on the high-speed Swift Current chairlift to ski Mr. K, a gentle, low-angle slope with beautiful views. Beginner’s zones like this offer an opportunity to turn your pizza into french fries, but hiring an instructor is the best way to improve your skills in a safe and easy learning environment.
Black Diamond Welcome to cold smoke country. With skiing on all aspects of this mountain and ample wind to buff it out, there’s always quality snow for powderhounds to sniff out. We recommend hot laps on the slow, nostalgic Challenger lift. Or you might take the tram to shred Dictator Chutes, a set of steep and sustained, classic Big Sky lines.
Blue Square As part of the ambitious “Big Sky 2025” plan which will transform Big Sky into a world-class destination, the resort installed North America’s first eight-person chairlift on Andesite Mountain. Use the Ramcharger 8 to cruise rolling intermediate runs like Africa, Ambush, and Big Horn.
Double Black Diamond It’s easy for even experienced riders to scare themselves here. Just shoulder your skis and check out the huckable hike-to lines on Moonlight Basin’s Headwaters. Riders must register for a time slot in the ski patrol hut to access some of the resort’s heaviest zones, like the North Summit Snowfield, or Lone Peak’s iconic Big Couloir. Extreme terrain like this is the bedrock of Big Sky’s genuine skier culture.

Chad Fothacher, of Rocky Mountain Rustics (RMR) Group, breaks down the essential elements of building in Big Sky
“N
inety-five percent of the homes we do in Big Sky are slopeside, so the number-one priority is soil stability, making sure the soils are capable of supporting a load that’s only halfway in the hillside. There are ways to pin the house into the earth if necessary. With a single level house, if you want 4,000 square feet, you have to spread it over a large, flat area and the flow is much slower, and it lives a lot larger than a slopeside house, where you’re building up instead of building out. If you have a south-facing lot, you can pick up a ton of glass on the south side, for thermal gains through the winter.
Home automation systems, with full blackout blinds, are very popular for keeping the heat in or blocking it out. In building trends, we’ve seen a more modern style of construction versus the typical “parkitecture” or log homes that were super popular 10 to 15 years ago. There’s a lot more clean lines, and more thermally dynamic houses with more complex heating and solar systems. We focus on the walkout of the basement area for secondary living. It’s a great space to pick up accessory rooms, which allows more room to place the kitchen, living room, and master bedroom on the south-facing aspect upstairs, and keep that level very clean.”

ENNIS
ENNIS, A SMALL TOWN cradled by the Madison River, is known as a working cowboy town with a serious fishing habit. It sits in the valley between the Tobacco Root Mountains, the Gravelly Range, and the Madison Range, so it ’s a bit off the beaten path, but it ’s well worth the trip. Ennis is best known for being a fly-fishing and water recreation destination, thanks to robust populations
of rainbow and brown trout in the blue-ribbon Madison, as well as in shallow and warm Ennis Lake. Originally homesteaded during the gold rush by W illiam Ennis, the town has a long ranching histor y. Stroll downtown today and you’ ll find a vibrant commercial center that looks like the Old West, updated with boutiques, fly shops, and the lively W illie’s Distiller y.
