LIFESTYLE & REAL ESTATE

From the deep mountain lakes of northern Idaho to snowcapped mountain peaks and endless golden prairies in Montana, the Inland Northwest is one of the most environmentally diverse places on the planet. But it goes beyond the landscape. From northern Idaho to eastern Montana, you’ll find every type of community: university towns exploding with youth and excitement, and small towns where things move just a little bit slower (in a good way). On the pages that follow, you’ll get a taste of that diversity with stories about places to get away to and ways to surround yourself with the communities and culture that make this region so special.
While each town and place are a little different, the one thread they all share is an unparalleled quality of life. It’s why people choose to live here and those born here never want to leave. It’s about endless vistas, deep powder, pristine waters, wide open spaces, thriving communities, and endless opportunities. It’s about home.
Whether you’re a lifelong resident or a newcomer envisioning making this your forever home, PureWest Real Estate is here for you. As the leading brokerage in the region, which spans Montana and now includes Sandpoint, Idaho, PureWest is synonymous with local knowledge, community values, and unparalleled service. Our agents are your neighbors and friends, and they share the same love, passion, and fascination you have for this place.
If your story takes you away, we’re here for that, too. PureWest Real Estate has earned its reputation as a global leader in the real estate industry, and our affiliations with Christie’s International Real Estate and Leading Real Estate Companies of the World mean that we can deliver exceptional real estate results across North America and beyond.

The Godmother OF MONTANA CERAMICS
A Q&A WITH Potter Julia Galloway
WITH ITS TOWERING PEAKS AND endless plains, Montana has inspired generations of artists, from iconic landscape painters like Charles M. Russell to author, poet, and essayist Jim Harrison. Perhaps less known are the potters and ceramic artists who have come from and settled in Big Sky Country, thanks in large part to the robust scene here. At the center of that scene is the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts. Founded in 1951 by entrepreneur, brickmaker, and arts patron Archie Bray, the Helena-based organization has been hosting ceramics artists for years, including Julia Galloway.

An urn from Julia Galloway’s endangered species series, featuring the leatherback sea turtle.
Based in Missoula, Galloway has been featured in shows across the country and has been dubbed the “Godmother of Montana Ceramics.” We caught up with her about her work, how she uses her pieces, and her current efforts to raise awareness about endangered species.
PW: How did you get your start in pottery?
JG: I got into pottery because my high school had a ceramics studio, and I was just kind of good at it naturally. I loved making art and I found it so satisfying. Even all these years later, I still find it challenging conceptionally and technically. Of course, at the time, I didn’t know that being a potter would lead to such an amazing life, but it ended up that way.
How I got that first pottery wheel is kind of a funny story. I saved up all my babysitting money and I went out, bought the wheel, and dragged it home on the subway where I grew up in Boston. And I should say, a pottery wheel is not small! But I just love the doggedness of that young woman.
PW: What was your education like and what brought you west to Montana?
JG: I went to college in New York, I studied in Japan, I went back to Boston for a few years, then went to graduate school in Colorado, and then taught for a year in Virginia. It was very indicative of an artist’s early career, which is often spent bouncing around doing different residencies to develop our own show record and develop a little bit of a reputation. I moved around quite a bit during those early years. After all that, I taught at the School for American Crafts in Rochester, N.Y.
I first came to Montana because there is a fabulous artist-in-residence program in Helena at the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts, and I spent two years there building my career. While I was there, I just fell in love with Montana. So, years later, when a job opened up at the University of Montana, I jumped at the chance to go back west.
PW: You describe yourself as a “utilitarian potter.” Tell me a little bit about what that means to you.
JG: It’s kind of a funky phrase. But to me, at its very heart, it means that the type of pottery I make is meant to be used. It’s domestic pottery for your kitchen or your living room. It means they are both useful objects and art objects. And maybe it’s a bit finicky to use the word “utilitarian” but I think it helps people understand what I do.
PW: When you say it’s domestic pottery, does that mean you want people to actually use these?
JG: I get asked that a lot, actually. I think it’s up to the person who has the piece. I have seen some incredibly beautiful dresses that I would never wear, but someone else might wear them right away with no hesitation. I think it really comes down to the person and their tenacity.
When you use a pot or a mug, you form a different type of relationship with it. We all have our favorite mug. Maybe it’s bigger or you like the color or it has a good handle, right? The beauty of handmade pottery is that people really come to love specific pieces and I think that’s just fabulous. When you really fall in love with a piece, it’s not as disposable as others. When it breaks, it actually hurts. I got a phone call from a woman who bought a piece from me back in Boston many years ago. She hunted me down to tell me that she had broken my mug. And I was kind of dumbstruck when I got the call, I didn’t know what to say, I didn’t know if she wanted me to replace it or something. I just said, “I’m so sorry.” And she said, “I used that mug every day for 15 years and it was a great mug, so I just wanted to say thank you.” I thought that was so cool that she called after all those years.
PW: Do you use your own work?
JG: Absolutely, all the time. I use pieces done by my friends, which I like because it’s almost like I’m having breakfast with them.

I dragged my first wheel home on the subway.
- Julia Galloway

PW: You became concerned with the state of our natural environment and since 2017, you began making a series of pieces that reflect that concern, specifically commemorative portrait plates and now urns dedicated to endangered species. Tell us about that.
JG: I have had a successful career as a potter, and I wanted to do something more meaningful with my skills. A few years ago, I was listening to a podcast while waiting for a plane at an airport about the albatross, which is this amazing bird that can stay aloft for a month by putting half of its brain to sleep. I mean, isn’t that amazing? It can fly over the ocean for a month! They go out over the ocean to get fish and then bring the fish back to their young on land. They’re sleeping and flying at the same time. I thought it was so cool. So, I’m listening to this podcast about these birds, and then they say, “These birds are dying because they keep getting fish attached to fishing lines, and the birds get dragged under the water. And they’re
dying at a rate of one every 20 minutes.” I heard that, and it was just a gut punch to me. It was so sad. That’s when I decided to do something to raise awareness. So, I started with commemorative plates. I was in this show in California, and I made a series of six plates with endangered species that could all be found within a mile of the museum where they were being displayed. And the response to the show was amazing. It had a profound impact on the viewers. So, I did those plates for a few years, and I did a few shows like that, including one in Pennsylvania, and again, it got a great response. What was interesting about that show was that people who came remembered a lot of the species that were on the plates, and they realized that their children were not seeing them as much as they did when they were kids. It was really interesting. After that, I thought I wanted to make an object that had more presence, that was a little bigger. At the same time, I was studying burial urns in different cultures. I went to China and learned how to carve all of these beautiful
Potter Julia Galloway in her studio with her urns commemorating endangered species.

species. So, I’ve done urns of whales and lynx and even spiders.
I don’t know if I would have done that endangered species project if I was still living back east. Being in a place like Montana, the natural world is right there all the time. Being here really raised my awareness about these creatures.
PW: What made you want to become a professor and what surprised you about getting into that part of the profession?
JG: I’m a studio rat by nature. I love to get in there and get to work. But it can also be really isolating. So, the first time I taught a class, I was so surprised about how much I was learning by teaching. Intellectually, it was wonderfully challenging. And I loved that we’d be in these classes laughing and having these wonderful discussions about
art, and I realized that this would be a really good move for me.
PW: What are you working on now, and what’s next?
JG: I’ll be working on these endangered species urns until at least 2027. I’m going alphabetically and I’m on the letter H right now, so I still have a ways to go. That’s what I’m working on now. And then we’ll see. Usually, one project leads to the next.
I’m really rooted in the studio, though. I still spend at least an hour every day working in the studio and so everything I do is going to be rooted in that.

PUREWEST
GIVES BACK
At PureWest, we like to build relationships that last a lifetime. And that goes far beyond the relationships built between our agents and our clients: we also aim to build strong partnerships with the communities that we serve. Like you, we want to make the places we call home better communities for everyone. That’s why we like to work with the many charities that strive to make the lives of Montana and Idaho residents better, from adopting families during the holidays to providing meals to those in need. Here are just five community efforts that we would like to recognize.
ADOPT-A-FAMILY
The holidays can be a trying time for anyone, especially those less fortunate than others. In an effort to help families in our own community, members of the PureWest team in several Montana towns adopt multiple families during the holiday season, providing toys, gifts, and other donations to make the season just a little bit brighter.

SOROPTIMISTS INTERNATIONAL OF HAMILTON

Sometimes, we like to help the helpers. That’s exactly why we partnered with Soroptimists International of Hamilton. Founded in 1974, the Soroptimists aim to help the needs of women, girls, and families in Ravalli County. To do that, they support other causes like Stop Human Trafficking, Adopt a Classroom, Bitterroot Literacy, Child Care Resources, and the Linda Massa Youth Home.

DOG TAG BUDDIES

ENNIS SENIOR CENTER AND MEALS ON WHEELS
The Ennis Senior Center opened in October 2015 and, in the years since, has served more than 10,000 meals. But not everyone can make it into town for a nourishing meal. That’s where the Meals on Wheels program comes in. The Ennis Senior Center has been able to bring healthy meals to community members, and it’s our honor to help support this cause.
Montana ranks third in the nation for veterans per capita. Dog Tag Buddies is focused on helping veterans live fulfilling lives through training and building a relationship with their service dog. This helps them find methods to recognize and manage the symptoms of their disabilities, and discourages self-isolation, as well as offers a renewed sense of purpose.

Classic Sights, Local Favorites
GLACIER NATIONAL PARK
Inside Glacier National Park’s one million acres are some of the most iconic scenes in all the West: the sprawling vista of the Lewis and Clark Range looming over Lake McDonald, the sun illuminating Heavens Peak from Logan Pass, and the icy mass of Grinnell Glacier sitting in the valley it carved out thousands of years ago. They are all iconic for a reason, regardless of whether you’re a long-time local or a new arrival. But for each iconic view, hike, or hangout spot, there’s a local favorite that is a little less appreciated. Here are a few of our favorites.

The hike from Many Glacier Lodge to Grinnell Glacier is among the most famous in the park, and for good reason. This challenging yet rewarding 8-mile round trip has incredible views for nearly its entire run. If you want to skip part of the hike and enjoy a unique experience, you can also take a boat to the far end of Swiftcurrent Lake to start your hike to the glacier. The trek to the glacier is so well known that even locals are bound to want to do it every few years.
A great alternative to Grinnell is the hike to Cracker Lake, which also begins not far from the Many Glacier Hotel. This 12-mile round trip features breathtaking views and its payoff at the end is more than worth the effort. Located in an amphitheater of mountains, Cracker Lake is a deep turquoise color because of how light reflects off the suspended load of glacier silt within. It’s unlike anything you have ever seen.

Hike

Picnic Spot
Lake McDonald is perhaps the most visited site inside Glacier National Park: It’s one of the few areas in the park that is accessible year-round, and it’s an incredible view. At 10 miles long and 500 feet deep, it is the largest lake in Glacier National Park and is a direct result of glacial carving. The most popular spot to enjoy a picnic along the
D rive
The Going-to-the-Sun Road has been taking people’s breath away for more than 90 years as it traverses the heart of Glacier Park. But at the height of summer, it can be hard to escape the crowds. If you’re looking for a nice drive with great views, consider U.S. Highway 2, along the southern edge of the park. Starting in West Glacier, you’ll travel east through John F. Stevens Canyon toward Essex.
water is at Apgar, which features the closest lake access to West Glacier. But locals will tell you the best spot to hang out, enjoy a picnic, and hit the water is just west of there at Fish Creek. Located near a campground, there is plenty of water access and many little coves where you can find solitude just across the water.
Stop at the Goat Lick Overlook to see if you can spot one of its most famous namesake residents. Continuing on to Marias Pass, you’ll be mesmerized by the peaks of the south edge of the park. At East Glacier Park, get a bite to eat and explore the historic lodge. The best part about driving U.S. Highway 2? Unlike the beloved Sun Road, it’s open year-round.
NORTHWEST MONTANA

FROM THE ENDLESS PRAIRIES ON THE ROCKY
Mountain Front to the centuries-old giant red cedars in the rainforest-like atmosphere of the Kootenai National Forest, Northwest Montana is one of the country’s most environmentally diverse regions. At the center of it all is Glacier National Park, a 1-million-acre preserve established in 1910 and dubbed “the backbone of the world” by Indigenous members of the Blackfeet Nation. Here, icy glaciers still dominate the landscape. And at a single spot called Triple Divide Peak, a bottle of spilled water will travel three ways: north to the Hudson Bay, south to the Gulf of Mexico, and west to the Pacific Ocean.
To the west of Glacier National Park is the Flathead Valley, the cultural heart of this region. Whitefish is an old logging town turned ski town, with some of the finest restaurants in the area. Kalispell is the
economic heart of the valley and is quickly emerging as a cultural center, with the opening of the Wachholz College Center at Flathead Valley Community College, which is attracting acclaimed musicians and artists. And Columbia Falls is an up-and-coming community that has positioned its resurrected downtown as the “Gateway to Glacier.” Head west out of the Flathead Valley on either U.S. Highway 2 or U.S. Highway 93, and you’ll enter the Kootenai, a region rich in history and recreational opportunity. Lake Koocanusa, near Eureka, stretches 90 miles long and has some of the best boating and fishing opportunities in the area. Then further west, near Troy, the Ross Creek Cedar Grove, features some of the tallest and most impressive trees in the state, red cedars that have loomed over the forest for some 500 years. It’s a quiet spot to reflect on all this stunning region has to offer.

THE FLATHEAD’S OWN GLACIER RANGE RIDERS
For years, there’s been a desire for a pro baseball team in the Flathead Valley. Then, in 2022, the Glacier Range Riders rolled into town as part of the independent Pioneer League. Since its inaugural season, the baseball team has been filling the stands at Glacier Bank Park, located just north of Kalispell.
While the team is new, it has embraced the Flathead’s deep connections to nearby Glacier National Park. The name is a reference to the first park rangers who patrolled the 1-million-acre preserve
more than a century ago. During games, the team’s mascots — Huck, a grizzly bear, and Cliff, a surefooted mountain goat — also bring a bit of Glacier to the ballpark. The Glacier Range Riders are also the only professional sports team to use the governmentissued shade of National Park Service green as its primary color.
The Range Riders’ season kicks off in May and usually goes into September. For more information, visit gorangeriders.com.

CHEERS! NORTHWEST MONTANA’S BREWING BEER SCENE
Arobust beer renaissance is underway in Northwest Montana with more than a dozen breweries in operation in the Flathead Valley and beyond. In Kalispell, Bias Brewing and SunRift Beer are the local staples with locations on Main Street and along the new Parkline Trail, respectively. SunRift also recently opened a new location in Whitefish, joining that town’s robust offerings with Bonsai Brewing Project and Jeremiah Johnson Brewing Company. Just up U.S. Highway 2 north of Kalispell is Sacred Waters Brewing Company’s taphouse, which is always a beehive of activity, especially in summer when the back patio is open.
In Columbia Falls, the local hangout is Backslope Brewing, known for both its beers and its food. Down on the lake, Flathead Lake Brewing Company in Bigfork and Tamarack Brewing Co. in Lakeside offer great ales and great food. And don’t worry, if beer isn’t your beverage of choice, two Kalispell cider makers have you covered with Rough Cut Hard Cider and Big Mountain Ciderworks.
If you want to indulge in it all, be sure to book a tour with Big Sky Brews Cruise. The local guides will take you to all the right spots to enjoy this state’s robust and growing brewery scene. For more information, visit bigskybrewscruise.com.

for Montana. But long before it was named one of the best small towns in America by Travel+Leisure Magazine, it was a rough-and-tumble logging and railroading community dubbed “Stumptown” because of all the tree stumps scattered around town.
Today, most of the stumps are gone, but Whitefish is still a top-notch destination. Whitefish Mountain Resort plays host to some of the best skiing in the region with a dozen lifts to access more than 3,000 acres of terrain. Below that is Whitefish Lake, featuring nearly 16 miles of shoreline and plenty of room to paddleboard (a local favorite), motorboat, or cast a line. The quaint downtown features some of the finest dining in the state, including the newly opened Herb & Omni, and a wide variety of entertainment – from live music at the Great Northern Bar & Grille to shows at the O’Shaughnessy Cultural Arts Center, home to the Whitefish Theatre Company. Regardless of where you come from and what you’re searching for, Whitefish has something for everyone.

THE TRAILHEAD NEXT DOOR
WHITEFISH TRAILS OFFER YEAR-ROUND RECREATION
In some places, a trip to the trailhead takes a lot of planning. It involves researching the best trails, packing for a lengthy road trip, and fighting for parking once you get there.
Not so in Whitefish, where a truly robust trail system is maintained by the nonprofit Whitefish Legacy Partners, a community collaboration to preserve clean water, public access, recreation, thriving forests, uncluttered natural views, and wildlife. Since the effort began in the early 2000s, the Whitefish Trail system has grown to include 47 miles of trail and 15 trailheads — all
just minutes away from downtown Whitefish. The system is comprised of scenic loops and overlooks that are perfect for running, hiking, biking, and — on some trails come winter — cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The Big Mountain Trailhead, located just below the famed Whitefish Mountain Resort, features 5.5 miles of trail through the scenic Haskill Basin and, in the winter, 23 kilometers of groomed Nordic trail courtesy of the Glacier Nordic Club.

ARTS IN THE PARK HUCKLEBERRY DAYS
If you’re walking in the woods of Northwest Montana in late July and early August, look down and keep an eye out for one of the sweetest delicacies around: Huckleberries. These mountain berries are a beloved summer treat in these parts.
But these aren’t the only “huckleberry” to keep an eye out for during the long days of summer in August. There’s also Huckleberry Days, an arts festival held annually in Whitefish’s Depot Park. This year it runs from Aug. 9-11. Hosted by the Whitefish Chamber of Commerce, this event has been held for more than 35 years and attracts artists and artisans from across the Pacific Northwest. From bakers to painters, the annual Huckleberry Days festival has something for everyone, especially those looking to get a taste of that beloved mountain berry. For more information, visit whitefishchamber.org/huckleberry-days.

FLATHEAD LAKE
A NCHORING THE BOTTOM OF THE ROCKY Mountain Trench — a 1,000-mile-long valley also known as the “Valley of a Thousand Peaks” that stretches from the Yukon to Northwest Montana — Flathead Lake is the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi River. With more than 200 square miles of water and 185 miles of shoreline, it is also an endless source of summertime fun for boaters, anglers, and recreationalists. On the northwest corner of the lake sits the historic communities of Somers and Lakeside. Somers became the industrial hub of the valley with the arrival of the Great Northern Railway in the 1890s. Just down U.S. Highway 93, Lakeside proves that this area isn’t a one-trick pony, with the pristine ski slopes of Blacktail Mountain looming over the community. On the south end of
the lake, Polson stands as the economic and cultural heart of the Flathead Indian Reservation, plus a prime basecamp for adventures into the lush Mission Valley to the south.
Traveling up the east shore of Flathead Lake along historic Montana Highway 35 will take you through the rich cherry orchards that make this area famous. No road trip along this century-old highway would be complete without a stop at one of the many roadside cherry stands that open in late summer. Just up the road from the orchards on the northeast shore of the lake is the community of Woods Bay, which comes alive in summer as boaters crowd dockside bars and restaurants. Beyond Woods Bay lies Bigfork and the north shore of the lake, back to where we began our journey around this pristine recreational paradise.

HUNTING FOR THE FLATHEAD LAKE MONSTER
Spend enough time around Flathead Lake, and someone is bound to mention her name: Flossie. While a newcomer to the Flathead Valley might think some crusty old local is trying to pull their leg with tales of an alleged “Flathead Lake Monster,” it is true that for over a century, people have been spotting some mysterious creature in the chilly waters of the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi River.
Those who have seen the mysterious creature report that it’s anywhere from 20 to 40 feet long, is round with a brown or blue color, and looks almost like a giant eel. It also allegedly has “steel-black eyes.” One of the first modern sightings of the monster was from Captain James Kerr, who piloted the U.S. Grant, a steamship that moved passengers and freight up and down the lake. In 1889, Kerr and his passengers
reported seeing what initially appeared to be a log start to move through the water. When the creature got closer, someone began to shoot at it with a gun, and it retreated below the surface.
Since then, there have been more than 100 reported sightings of the creature “from drinkers and non-drinkers,” along with “mothers, doctors, lawyers, biologists, engineers, anglers, and policemen.” While some believe it’s simply a sturgeon, a large freshwater fish native to the Columbia River system that lives in the Kootenai River in northern Idaho, others are convinced it’s something more. The Flathead Lakers, a nonprofit dedicated to protecting the lake, encourages those who see the creature to report it to them. “We will not laugh or make fun, and we will sincerely enter your comments into the historical archives of the Flathead Lake Monster.”
SOMERS DEEP ROOTS ON THE LAKE

Today, the tiny hamlet of Somers (population 1,169) is a quiet community on the north shore of Flathead Lake; the ideal place to put down roots and enjoy the peace and serenity that make Montana so special. But a century ago, this little town was the “industrial hub of the Flathead Valley” thanks to the arrival of the Great Northern Railway in the 1890s.
One of the key items needed to build a railway is wooden crossties, the sticks of lumber that keep the iron rails in place. Just as it is today, Northwest Montana was lush with timber, and so the railroad’s president, the famous “Empire Builder” James J. Hill, established a sawmill and tie factory on the shores of Flathead Lake at Somers. All around the lake, logs were dumped into the water and then floated to Somers where they were turned into railroad ties. To move those freshly made ties around, the railroad used a quirky little fleet of “fireless” locomotives. Instead of burning wood or coal to boil water and make steam, the locomotives were connected to the sawmill’s boiler and filled with steam, enough power to shuttle loads around the mill for an hour or so. The advantage to this was that the little locomotives didn’t spew sparks which could burn the freshly made ties. The mill would churn out crossties until the 1980s, but one of those little green locomotives is still on display today at the Somers Company Town Museum on Somers Road, just across the street from local favorite Del’s Bar. At the museum, the full story of this industrious little town is on display.

BIGFORK

LOCATED ALONG THE SHORE OF THE WEST’S largest freshwater lake, Bigfork is a tiny village that packs a big punch. As locals like to say, “Whatever Montana you dream of, you’ll find it in Bigfork.” The Swan River that roars through town is home to some of the area’s best whitewater kayaking, which is why the “wild mile” hosts the annual Bigfork Whitewater Festival held every Memorial Day Weekend. Just beyond the Swan River’s mist sits downtown, home to a thriving theater scene where notable actors like
Oscar winner J.K. Simmons got his start. And before or after a show, locals and visitors alike can take in one of Bigfork’s many fine dining establishments. It’s not just the attractions within Bigfork that make it a great spot to put down roots. The scenic wonders of the Flathead National Forest and Glacier National Park are a short drive away, while the conveniences of Kalispell are also easily accessible. Indeed, quaint Bigfork seems to be a distillation of the best things this corner of Montana has to offer.

QUICK FACTS
THE LITTLE PLAYHOUSE THAT CAN

In 1960, Dr. Firman “Bo” Brown and his wife Margery Hunter Brown were in search of a place for University of Montana theatre students to perform during the summer. They found their answer about 100 miles north of campus in the village of Bigfork, on the shore of Flathead Lake. That year, they founded the Bigfork Summer Playhouse at the 200-seat Community Hall in town. The hall also served as the playhouse’s rehearsal space, set building shop, dining hall, and living space. Things were tight, but the Browns and their student actors made it work. A few years later, they hired Don Thomson as a technician. He’d later go on to own the playhouse with his wife, Jude Irvine, who had joined as a piano player in 1965. They still run it along with their son Brach. As the decades rolled on, the Bigfork Summer Playhouse earned a name for itself as one of the premier theaters in the region. That reputation was aided in large part by the many talented alumni who passed through its doors. Some six decades later, the little playhouse that can is still selling out shows (in a considerably larger space now) and cementing its place as one of the cornerstones of Montana’s cultural scene. NORTH IDAHO
THE IDAHO PANHANDLE — OR AS LOCALS call it, North Idaho or simply the Panhandle — is one of the crown jewels of the Inland Pacific Northwest. Sandwiched between Montana to the east, the Canadian Rockies to the north, and the fruitful Palouse region of eastern Washington to the west, this part of Idaho is full of lush forests, rugged mountains, wild rivers, and welcoming small towns.
The region is also home to three mountain ranges that surround Lake Pend Oreille, the largest lake in the state of Idaho with a surface area of 148 square miles. Centuries ago, the Salish Tribes built camps along the water to fish here during the summer. In the early 1800s, Canadian fur trader, surveyor and cartographer David Thompson came to the area on behalf of the North West Company (while Meriwether Lewis and William Clark have long been celebrated characters in Northwest history, it was Thompson who put much of the region on the map — literally). Along the shores of Lake Pend Oreille is Sandpoint, one of the many thriving communities that dot the landscape here.
For people who want the best of everything, vibrant little towns but plenty of land to escape into the solitude of the great outdoors, North Idaho might be the place.

NORTH IDAHO

SANDPOINT A YEAR-ROUND DESTINATION
Sandpoint is a recreational paradise. With a pristine lake just steps away from a lively downtown and a ski hill overlooking it all, locals and visitors alike will never run out of activities in the heart of Idaho’s Panhandle Region. Lake Pend Oreille, the state’s largest, is a wonderful place to boat, fish, or paddleboard. Access couldn’t be easier with numerous state parks on its perimeter and a public beach not far from downtown.
The historic downtown is thriving, full of a unique collection of retailers, art galleries, and restaurants. Local favorites include the Utara Brewing Co. and the Pend d’Oreille Winery Tasting Room, home to some award-winning wines indicative of the Pacific
Northwest’s finest. The Panida Theater is the cultural cornerstone of the community, with live music, theatre, comedy, and more.
Overlooking it all in the heart of the rugged Selkirk Mountains — a mountain range that runs from Idaho deep into the Canadian Rockies — is Schweitzer Mountain Resort, a ski area with 2,900 acres of terrain and a reputation for some of the best tree skiing in the region. Home to two massive ski bowls, you’re more likely to find deep powder than endless lift lines on this hill. Schweitzer is part of the Ikon Ski Pass program, which also includes Big Sky Resort. All the more reason why Sandpoint is one of the Northwest’s premier year-round destinations.

MISSOULA & THE BITTERROOT

NESTLED WITHIN A LANDSCAPE CARVED OUT by glaciers that once held back a pre-historic lake of the same name, Missoula is among the most vibrant cities in the American West, with a lively downtown, rich cultural scene, a legendary football team, and a century-old college often called “The Harvard of the West.” Through the heart of Missoula flows the Clark Fork River, where on summer days, you’ll often find residents casting a line or floating by in tubes, a beloved tradition for locals and newcomers alike.
Easily accessible thanks to a growing airport and direct access via Interstate 90, Missoula is a great base camp for anyone looking to put down roots in
Montana while still being connected to other places. That accessibility also means Missoula is a regular stop for national touring acts and other attractions.
Missoula also serves as the trailhead for the stunning Bitterroot Valley to the south, a lush region pressed up against the imposing Bitterroot Mountains. Going south on U.S. Highway 93, you’ll pass through lovely communities like Lolo, Florence, Stevensville, Victor, Corvallis, Hamilton, and Darby. Each offers a setting for that small-town life Montana is famous for, while also having the conveniences and attractions of Missoula just a short drive away.

QUICK FACTS

12 GOLF COURSES

A CLOSE-KNIT COMMUNITY HAMILTON
Situated in the heart of the Bitterroot Valley, Hamilton is home to just under 5,000 people and is the county seat for Ravalli County. Founded in the late 1800s by copper baron Marcus Daly, the region has a deep history with agriculture, and it remains a major economic force in the area. However, in more recent decades, Hamilton has also become popular for retirees looking for a slower pace of life. It’s for that reason that Travel+Leisure magazine named Hamilton one of the “10 Best Small Towns in the U.S. for Retirees.” Among the many reasons cited by the magazine was Hamilton’s close-knit community spirit, ample outdoor recreational opportunities, and easy access to medical facilities, including the Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital. For people looking to relocate to the area, Hamilton offers it all, from stately homes in town to spacious properties just outside of town. Spend a day around Hamilton, and it’s easy to see why this has become a top destination for people of all ages.

A LEGACY OF CHAMPIONS
The Washington-Grizzly Champions Center, a 51,000-square-foot training and locker facility for University of Montana studentathletes, might be boldly named, but one needs only look at the football team’s winning history to see that it isn’t that far off from the truth. A member of the Big Sky Conference since 1963, the storied team has one of the winningest records in college football, including a streak of 25 consecutive winning seasons from 1986 until 2011. Most recently, the football team appeared in the 2024 NCAA FCS Championship. But success on the field is only part of the story. Missoula is home to one of the most exciting atmospheres in college football. With a capacity of more than 25,000, Washington-Grizzly Stadium is by far the largest in Montana and it’s the largest on-campus stadium anywhere in the FCS among teams that partake in the postseason (Yale has the largest, but the Ivy League school does not partake in postseason play). The stadium is often at capacity during home games in the fall and, spending even just a few minutes there, will turn just about anyone into a Griz fan.

WHITEFISH
MISSOULA
YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK
During the second half of the 19th century, as America continued to move west, explorers and surveyors found a special corner of Montana that was deemed too perfect to be disrupted: Yellowstone National Park. In 1869, the members of the Folsom-Cook-Peterson Expedition wrote a story in Western Monthly Magazine where they declared that “this masterpiece of nature’s handiwork” had not yet been “desecrated” by man and that everything should be done to ensure it stayed that way. In 1872, the federal government ensured just that when it turned the 2.2 million acres in southwest Montana and northern Wyoming into the world’s first national park. While other preserves had been created in the decades before, none had ever been given “national” status. The reason Yellowstone was the first was partially a reality of geography: it was located in three different territories. More than 150 years later, Yellowstone continues to amaze visitors from both near and far. Here are a few favorite ways for both locals and newcomers to enjoy the world’s first national park.

Yellowstone National Park has some 250 hiking trails covering more than 1,000 miles. Picking just one might be impossible, but a great choice for families in search of some of the most iconic views in the park might be the Fairy Falls Trail to the Imperial and Spray Geysers. Besides the geysers, the trail also takes hikers to the Grand
Prismatic Spring, the largest hot spring in the United States and the third largest in the world. But perhaps more impressive than the records this feature holds are the rings of red, orange, yellow, green, and blue that circle it. If that’s not enough, you’ll also see the 200-foot-tall Fairy Falls.

Hike

Stay
With nine different lodges offering more than 2,000 rooms, there are plenty of places to stay inside Yellowstone National Park. But perhaps the most memorable is the Old Faithful Inn. Built over the winter of 1903 and 1904, the inn was one of the first great park lodges in the American West and
was located just steps away from perhaps Yellowstone’s most iconic feature, the Old Faithful Geyser. Today, it remains one of the largest log structures in the world. The rustic feel harkens back to the park’s earliest days and provides an unforgettable experience for anyone who stays there.
Drive
The federal government set aside Yellowstone National Park for future generations, sparing it from most development. And in the years after its creation, a robust road system was built within its boundaries, so visitors could access the scenic wonders within. Perhaps the most iconic route of them all in the park
is the Grand Loop Road, a 140-mile system that connects some of the most iconic sites within the park, including the Upper, Midway, and Lower geyser basins, Mammoth Hot Springs, Tower Fall, the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, and Yellowstone Lake.
BOZEMAN

LOCATED IN THE HEART OF THE GALLATIN Valley, Bozeman has been topping lists of “most livable” small cities for more than a decade — and there are many reasons why. In Bozeman itself, you’ll find some of the region’s best restaurants, a thriving arts scene, innovative businesses, and a world-class university that is helping fuel the community as a leading tech hub. Outside of Bozeman (but not too far), you’ll find awe-inspiring mountains, blue-ribbon fishing, rock climbing, skiing, hunting, hiking, and more.
First settled in 1864, the community was initially called Missouri. But a few years later, it was renamed for local wagon master and trail guide, John M.
Bozeman, who guided some of the first settlers into the Gallatin Valley. Since the 1870s, one of the biggest attractions in the area has been Yellowstone National Park, the first in the United States and widely considered to be the first national park of any kind in the world.
While Bozeman still maintains its frontier spirit and Old West vibes, it also serves as a crossroads between tradition and the future, thanks to its strong startup culture. In 2023, the community and Montana State University were dubbed a Regional Technology and Innovation Hub because of the institution’s focus on photonics and smart sensor technology, both critical for national security.

A RECREATION DESTINATION HYALITE RESERVOIR
Apristine mountain lake, a lush forest, and mountain peaks that touch Montana’s legendary “Big Sky.” The view from the shore of Hyalite Reservoir is among the most breathtaking in all of the Treasure State — a place awash with national treasure — and it’s all the more amazing when you find out that it’s located a short drive from downtown Bozeman.
While the Hyalite Reservoir looks as if it has been unchanged for centuries, it’s actually a somewhat recent addition to the area. Construction of a dam up Hyalite Creek some 14 miles south of Bozeman began in 1939, but it was quickly put on hold following the start of World War II. After the war, construction on the dam resumed, and in 1951, the reservoir behind it was filled. In 1993, the dam was reconstructed, expanding it to a surface area of approximately 490 acres. While the reservoir’s main purpose is to provide water for local municipalities and irrigation, a side benefit is that it’s an incredible recreational destination minutes from Bozeman. The lake is home to three different types of trout, has two campgrounds on its shore, and is a great place to cool down on a hot day.

DANCING IN THE STREETS
MUSIC ON MAIN
Twenty-three years ago, a popular local bluegrass band called Kane’s River performed on a side street near downtown Bozeman. That small show on South Bozeman Avenue in the summer of 2001 would kick off what would eventually become a beloved local tradition.
Almost a quarter century later, Music on Main has grown from a single show on a side street to a cornerstone of Bozeman’s summer social calendar, with shows on Main Street on Thursday evenings in July and August (In 2024, Music on Main kicks off on July
11 and continues until August 15). The main events, of course, are the bands filling downtown with the sounds of everything from bluegrass and rock to country and pop. But that isn’t the only attraction. Local nonprofits help organize kids’ activities nearby from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. and numerous local food vendors are set up downtown as well. And if none of those suit your appetite, you can check out one of Bozeman’s many fine brick-and-mortar eateries.

BIG SKY

QUICK FACTS

RECEIVES AN AVERAGE OF MORE THAN 400 INCHES OF SNOWFALL ANNUALLY

IN THE YEARS AFTER THE NORTHERN PACIFIC Railway first crossed southern Montana in the early 1880s, settlers began to fan out across the territory (The Treasure State wouldn’t actually become a state of its own until 1889). Among them was a pioneer and homesteader by the name of Augustus Franklin Crail, who in 1901 purchased rights to a 150-acre homestead in a meadow area above Gallatin Canyon. The price? Just $1 per acre.
Crail, who would later be inducted into the Montana Cowboy Hall of Fame, developed the land in relative obscurity. But it wasn’t until the late 1960s, when Montana native and famous national broadcaster Chet Huntley (known for hosting NBC’s nightly news program in the 1950s and 1960s) put it on the map.
In 1968, he incorporated a ski resort, real estate, and commercial development company to help build up a community called Big Sky. Not long after starting up the simply named “Big Sky Incorporated,” he bought some land to build the first ski resort there, opening in December 1973. That ski area would grow, and another would crop up next to it, later merging into one. Today, Big Sky Resort has more than 5,800 acres of terrain, making it one of the largest in the United States, and is home to one of the top annual snowfalls in the country. But if skiing isn’t your thing, don’t worry, because this thriving community has plenty of other attractions, including spectacular golf courses, whitewater rafting, and more. In some ways, it is Montana’s premier outdoor playground.

BILLINGS & RED LODGE
THEY CALL BILLINGS “MONTANA’S TRAILHEAD,” and a quick look at history will prove that to be an apt moniker. Founded in 1882 by Frederick H. Billings along the banks of the Yellowstone River, Billings became the biggest town in the territory with the arrival of the Northern Pacific Railroad. Within a few months, Billings went from three buildings to more than 2,000, earning it the nickname “The Magic City.” Billings’ growth was so spectacular that everyone from a nearby town called Coulson picked up and moved to Billings (the former site of Coulson is now a city park).
The railroad would eventually continue west, but Billings would continue to flourish and become the biggest city in the state. As a result of that position

at the top, Billings has many amenities, including a thriving arts and museum scene, a strong food culture, and great shopping.
But Billings isn’t the only attraction in this part of the state. Just down the road is the town of Red Lodge, home to some of the best skiing in Montana and the start of the iconic Beartooth Highway to Yellowstone National Park, once called “the most beautiful roadway in America” by Charles Kuralt. Red Lodge once made its living on mining gold and coal, but during the 20th century it opted to change gears and become an outdoor recreation destination. It’s here you’ll find the very best Montana has to offer.

DOWNTOWN BILLINGS
THE BUSTLING HEART OF MONTANA’S LARGEST CITY
More than 140 years after Billings was founded, the Magic City of 117,000 people retains the magic of its namesake, and its downtown area is brimming with it.
Shaped by the rail line that first arrived here in the 1880s, downtown Billings provides all the advantages of city life right in the middle of Big Sky Country. Among the cornerstones of downtown is the Yellowstone Art Museum, which opened 60 years ago and is the largest contemporary art museum in the state. The art doesn’t end at the walls of this modern facility thanks to a number of public art installations,
most notably the #lightbiketrail, a path of illuminated LED-lit bikes scattered about the area, helping bring a little bit of light to once dark and overlooked areas.
In the summer, the downtown area comes alive with numerous events, including the annual Strawberry Festival every July, and the Alive After 5 outdoor summer concert series hosted at different downtown locations every Thursday in June and July. Besides those events, there are numerous restaurants, bars, breweries, and shops, all proving that the magic in Billings is as potent as its earliest days. FROM SILVER RUN TO RED LODGE
Like so many ski areas across the West and Montana, the origins of what we now know as Red Lodge Mountain can be traced back to nothing more than a tow rope and a dream. The Silver Run Ski Club was founded back in the late 1930s by skiers in the Red Lodge and Billings areas who wanted a place of their own to hit the slopes. They didn’t have much, but they did have tenacity, so they strung up a few rope tows and started skiing just a few miles down the road from today’s ski area. Eventually, the club members wanted something a little more, so they headed up the Willow Creek drainage and set their
sights on Grizzly Peak. In 1960, a ski area of that name opened with one chairlift and three runs. Later it was renamed Red Lodge Mountain.
Since those early days, Red Lodge Mountain has grown significantly and today it has six chairlifts giving skiers and riders access to more than 1,600 acres of terrain. Because the locals don’t like to wait around long for snow, the ski area also maintains one of the largest snowmaking operations in the region, which means as soon as the nights get cold in November, they’re making snow.
