Meeting Regulatory Requirements in Canada What type of product do you sell? It’s a seemingly simple question that can sometimes have a surprisingly complicated answer. Classifying your product according to Canadian regulations is one of the most important steps when preparing a product for the Canadian marketplace. It is vital to correctly determine the classification of your product to ensure you are in compliance with the appropriate regulations. In many cases, a seemingly minor difference between two similar products can have a significant impact on how each product is marketed, the costs and timelines associated with bringing them into Canada, the legal responsibilities of the product owner, and more. Although it may seem tedious, a little planning and due diligence up front can help to prevent potentially costly headaches down the line. When classifying your product, you should ask the following questions: • Is it a food, food-like natural health product, natural health product, cosmetic, drug, or medical device? • Can it be more than one, and if so, is one classification better than another? • Which classification will allow me to most effectively market my product? • How do I know if my product label meets the requirements for a given classification? • Will my product require reformulation in order to be eligible for a specific classification? • What type of licensing and regulations apply to each product category, and what types of documentation are needed? • What are the timelines and associated costs? It is meant to give vendors and brokers ongoing access and control over their listing specifications, as well as deduction details. PLIC is used for any new product submissions (including POP) or current product changes (such as specs, dimensions, and cost changes), all price-specific promotional activity (MCB or OI deals) that run throughout the year and for getting all deduction information. By automating the new product listing and promotional process, Purity can more efficiently and effectively communicate your new product launch or promotional activity to its sales team and retailers.
