From a scientific point of view, color is affected by light. We believe that it’s vise versa — color affects light, creates light and helps to differentiate and illuminate. Colors take part in our daily life and we’re always looking for the right color combinations and balance — which is inseparable from our inside feelings. That is the reason why when we’re asked what’s our favorite color, our answer will probably be affected by the way we feel at that moment, and eventually — we love them all.

“I was born and lived in Sevastopol (Crimea) for a long time. Now I live in Murmansk. I am engaged in photography not so long ago, about 4 years ago I decided that I wanted to create something new, exciting viewer's attention. I really want to take my place in art. Perhaps I will not be limited to photography. It sounds big, but everyone has a higher goal. Photography is a means of communication with the viewer. I constantly try something new, try to act on sensations. Sometimes, inspired by different sources, I try to convey some idea and take back a frame. / p h o t o g r a p h e r / Seigar is an English philologist, a highschool teacher, and a curious photographer. He is a fetishist for reflections, saturated colors, details and religious icons. He feels passion for pop culture that shows in his series. He considers himself a travel and street photographer.


Seigar's aim as an artist is to tell tales with his camera, to capture moments but trying to give them a new frame and perspective. Travelling is his inspiration. However, he tries to show more than mere postcards from his visits, creating a continuous conceptual line story from his trips. The details and subject matters come to his camera once and once again, almost becoming an obsession. His three most ambitious projects so far are his “Plastic People",

a study on anthropology and sociology that focuses on the humanization of the mannequins he finds in the shop windows all over the world, “Response to Ceal Floyer for the Summer Exhibition” a conceptual work that understands art as a form of communication, and his “Tales of a city”, an ongoing urban photo-narrative project taken in London. He usually covers public events with his camera showing his interest for social documentation. He has participated in several exhibitions, and his works have also been featured in international publications. He writes for The Cultural Magazine (Spain) about photography and for Memoir Mixtapes (Los Angeles) about music. He has collaborated with VICE Spain, WAG1 Magazine (text and photography for both), and he has some works featured in his Vogue Italy portfolio. Tales of a City IV: this is the fourth episode of an ongoing photo-narrative project that presents street photography taken in England, London. The author shows his most realistic works so far within his pop style schemes. The series was captured using a 35 mm lens to emphasize a cinematic frame of its constant elements: shop windows, plastic people, flesh and bones creatures, food, garbage, abandoned objects and words. The pop approach is developed through the saturated colours and reflections. In Tales IV, there are common details with the previous series, actually, places, which are mostly markets, busy purplehaze /colour issue/

streets and museums, have been revisited for further observation and to study the passing of time in the urban contexts. The difference though is found in the straight forward reading of the findings, and a clear-

published fashion photographer in Russia Danil Golovkin agreed on a small talk with PURPLEHAZE. Just before you start — Danil has been shooting for such magazines as Vogue, L'Officiel, Harper’s Bazaar, GQ and Tatler for more than 10 years. He's Moscow-based, though he travels frequently. Last month Danil's first solo exhibition was held at the Lumiere Brothers Center for Photography. HI, DANIL! WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE MOST COMPLICATED PART IN PHOTOGRAPHER'S JOB? AND WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT BEING A FASHION PHOTOGRAPHER?

YOU USUALLY SHOOT CELEBRI­ TIES. DO YOU ENJOY INTERACTING WITH THEM?

Well, I find it difficult to discover a new language and fresh ideas making a fashion shooting. That's how it goes — you come to the studio, make a shot and realize that it's all the same, the world has seen it a thousand times. Or take another example: you often have to explain to your team that something needs to be redone — the plan changed, you know! And you're responsible for their reaction, saying: “Guys, we're starting over!”, when you all have been working half the day. It's nice to see your team's support, though. The best thing ever is to be on the same page with people you are working with. It's just like tennis — you throw a ball and you get the ball back. Synergy is essential as it affects the end result.

It really depends on a person. It goes easy peasy when I work with people that I know well. However, some won't relax and act naturally quickly, so I need time to loosen them up, as it's hardly possible to make a good shooting without seeing the true self of a person. If a character or a model arrives in a bad mood, for me as a photographer it's crucial to get through to his or her emotional state. Thus, I find it tricky to make a shooting in the style that doesn’t go with one's personality. That would be great, if stylists and fashion editors considered character traits of the guest star while suggesting an image for the photo shoot. Just an example, some people rarely smile — they prefer keeping a straight face. Getting emotions out of such a person is not an easy task at all!

As for me, it's the day when I can get enough sleep and not bother myself thinking of all the things I have to do like post-production or photos retouch. Say, having breakfast at 2 pm, seeing my friends or just watching a movie — I can even stay at home for the whole day, the thing is to have some rest and just slow down. I really love weekends, days off and that kind of celebrations like May or New Year holidays when Moscow 107

is empty, everyone left the city or stays at home sleeping till noon. Sometimes it can get boring but I enjoy it really for the first couple of days. Actually, I like resting while others work and vice versa. During official holidays I receive less phone calls and offers, thus, I can concentrate better on my work and run my own schedule. You see, working on Sunday and having time off on Monday is the best option for me (laughing).

WHAT IS YOUR SOURCE

Anything, in fact. It's important to keep searching. Staying open-minded, you're more likely to get inspired even while sitting and looking at the naked wall. Of course, music is a big source of inspiration for me. I make playlists for each shooting, tracks involve me into the desired state of creativity, new ideas emerge.

As long as there have been humans there has been waste. Trash, leftovers, by-products; “unwanted or unusable material” as the dictionary puts it. Awkward things to dispose of, like single socks, outdated outfits, childhood relics and broken tech. There has always been waste, but waste has not always been the same. To our distant ancestors, waste meant scraps and bones; to us, whole loads of plastic discharged into oceans and animals. Its scale, its colour, its texture — all depends on the type of society it spills out of and so-ultimately-who we are. Not only does the physical form of waste change, we might say it exists in the eye of the beholder. What is useless to me can be valuable to you (one man's trash is another man's treasure). Waste then, is never a neutral term. It is loaded with all types of preconceptions.

waste today is more than personal matter. it is literally taking over, seems dangerous and invasive. recycling is a major concern — a must for everyone In my ongoing photographic series, “Waste Not Want Not”, I explore the “unwanted” and question who should have autonomy over what is wanted or not? These photographs capture the gathering of clothes; items found, used, loved and left. Sewed together meticulously by hand, each garment is given the same attention as a colour of paint on a stretched piece canvas. They are elevated from random materials to guiding principle, carefully arranged to respond to each other, becoming anew by becoming-a-whole. But the images also goes beyond the diaristic, if only because waste today is more than personal matter. It is literally taking over, seems dangerous and invasive. Recycling is a major concern — a must for everyone. Photographed in interaction with different nature scenes the images seek to shed light on sustainability, environmental-awareness and provide the impetus to act with urgency — and take better care of our planet.

This sculpture from waste and leftover pieces is imitating the human form, and dances across the planet, on land and in water. We might see a type of flag, one that, as opposed to the ones of one-dimensional nations, is made up of multiple textures. It travels. The piece is destined to move to different coastlines and locations; these photographs are only the beginning of a process of unwanted materials repeatedly arriving and unsettling. The piece also interacts with the human body, transforming and becoming fluid — it is shaping new poetic ways of seeing and evolving, balancing between abstraction and the figurative. Overconsumption of clothes in fashion is more than a byproduct, it is a type of premise for an industry that unsustainably sustains itself on novelty. It is time for whole industries to rethink and reuse immediately. “Waste Not Want Not” demands your attention to take action ■

Doubtlessly, choosing outfit is an integral part of our everyday life. While some people consider it to be a boring necessity, many others see this routine as a good way to express themselves, create a right impression in people’s eyes and finally be accepted the way they really are (or would like to be). As this time we are talking about colours, let’s be successive: What can the chosen colour say about our personality ?

These decorations are totally made of black paper. Costumes are real and made of cloth. For me as a photographer this shoot was a unique opportunity to make a complex, carefully crafted project, that hardly anyone will ever order from you, but which can grow into an exhibition. There was also an inner desire to create something new in collaboration with other talented artists and to have enough time and space for that.




The shooting took place in the studio of the designer Roman Ermakov famous for his avant-garde costumes, which became the central objects in our images. We have been discussing for a long time who are this creatures and where they can live? We understood that most of all they resemble strange deep-water animals living in their dark space of the ocean and illuminating all around. Designer Венера Казарова (Venera Kazarova) helped us to create this world and built some stunning paper decorations.

Preparation for the project took about 3 months, shooting was non-stop for 4 days — it was not easy and very laborious. The most difficult thing in creative collaboration is that each of the authors is constantly looking for something of their own ideal. This may be lighting that will illuminate the scenery the best way possible, the composition, the arrangement of the details, the poses of models. This process of creative search was repeated 9 times for 9 images. Then the postproduction took about a year, in a free time. It was thorough work with layers and color correction. Somewhere we added algae, fish, somewhere glow effects, glare — I wanted to add volume and picturesque in images, so that the viewer will wonder: “But how is this done?”. As a result, we managed to create a unique underwater world with interesting volumes, textures and heroes. Looking at the result now you do not understand that the scenery is made of plain black paper, and the creatures are people dressed in costumes. Definitely our team experiment ended very well ■

Some people are perfectly fine with eight of them, but if you feel thirst for a whirlpool of colours, please don’t try to fit into the mainstream. Ivory, tango orange, chartreuse, lavender, ballet slipper, cinnamon, porpoise and so forth — you see, there are more than 50 shades of gray or any other colour and each of them has its own story. The word indigo derives from the name of the plant Indigofera tinctoria — the source of the indigo dye extract. Indigofera was cultivated in Peru, Egypt and East Asia back in the fourth millennium B.C., whereas under other version, the plant originated in India and thus obtained its name (from the Latin indicum means Indian dye). Today we consider indigo to be a colour, something between rich blue and violet, however, previously the word referred to the dye at the forefront. Most likely, it was Isaac Newton who discovered rainbow colours, shining a sunlight beam through a prism — and indigo was among them. “The original or primary colours are Red, Yellow, Green, Blue&Violet Purple; together with Orange, Indico & an indefinite variety of intermediate gradations” — wrote Newton summarizing his experiment. You see, the scientist called the colour blue (in its modern sense) indigo, whereas Newton’s blue was more cyan.

Just for a minute going deeper into the esoteric, we would discover seven chakras — seven

famous French minimalist Yves Klein not only contributed greatly to the development of conceptual art but also discovered a new colour energy channels located in different points of the human body. The dark blue or indigo coloured Ajna chakra, located between the eyebrows, is meant to encompass contemplation and rational mind and spirit. Being one of the upper chakras, properly working Ajna gifts its owner the sense of unity with the universe. Deep, spiritual and just magnificent — that’s all about the colour indigo.

art Famous French minimalist Yves Klein not only contributed greatly to the development of conceptual art but also discovered a new colour. Though the artist never p atented the invention, he managed to register the paint formula and thus presented the International Klein Blue (IKB) to the world. The pigment used in IKB is similar to ultramarine and hence closely resembles indigo. Curiously, Klein was always fond of blue: colour of the sky and the sea and the prevailing paint in frescoes by Giotto inspired him to have his own blue epoch, within which he created about 200 blue-coloured monochromes. Probably the most famous (and most scandalous) work by Klein is his Anthropometry Performance, in which nude models acted as living brushes, putting on IKB paint on the wall using their bodies. The artist found the colour special not only because of its meaning, but also its physical qualities — Yves Klein thought that it was blue that looked unforgettable on the texture of a sponge. Beyond that, many artists who were sensitive to colour never lost sight of the rich blue shade — just think of the Blue Nudes by Henri Matisse or Blue Lovers by Marc Chagall.
