I am angry as I write this. (Really, Shay? Do tell.) We are not supposed to be living in a christian (lowercase is intentional) nation. We should be free to worship (or not worship) as we choose, but our laws should not be determined by what the Bible says. The Bible is fiction, written by men and used by other men to control and manipulate the masses. Our laws should never have the reason of "The Bible says so" to justify them, no more than I would expect our laws to be based upon Harry Potter or Game of Thrones. Fiction can be used for inspiration, of course. Think of book and movie characters that you love or admire. How many works of fiction have quotes that are shared in order to make a point, encourage a change, or motivate you? I can think of plenty (which is why diversity in fiction is so important - but that is a discussion for another day).

But having laws based upon the Bible? No. Hard stop. Fundamental christianity demonizes women who embrace their power. Women are taught that they are to obey their husband. If they aren't married, they should obey their father. They should obey their pastor. They are not allowed to have authority over a man. Obey, obey, obey. Forget that. Your fantasy book of rape, incest, and murder has no power over me. I should not have to abide by the rules within it. My rights should not be stripped away from me because your stupid book says so. Fundamental christianity demonizes women who embrace their sexuality, slutshaming and denigrating those who dare to realize that being virginal and chaste is nothing more than a way to control what a woman chooses to do with her own body. Bodily autonomy doesn't seem to be something that conservative christians are a fan of, apparently. I could go on, but I think you get the picture. My strength is with words. Am I a decent writer? Yes, I suppose. But I feel my greatest strength is to provide a platform for those whose talent is much greater than mine. I try to provide a way for others to speak up and fight back. Wisdom from the Faerie Godsmother Kali, We Need You WRITTEN BY : HOLLY BRODERICK
It’s 11:30 AM on a Monday morning, the Supreme Court Justices are in session, sitting pretty in their robes. Screams can be heard from just outside the courtroom doors. The doors fling open. Kali comes charging through wielding weapons in three of her hands and a head in the fourth. Six of the nine supreme court justices cowered behind their chairs as Kali charged through the courtroom screaming ear piercing warcries. She does not hesitate to go after the cretins that knowingly doomed women by sending the Roe vs Wade decision back to the States. After their skulls became a part of Kali’s necklace and their arms a part of her skirt, I woke up. This was the dream I had the night after I heard the devastating news about what the USA Supreme Court Justices had done. I was sick to my stomach and felt that it was a sign that I need to invoke my inner Kali, Hecate, Morrigan, or Lillith and use my rage to fuel my life’s decisions. I knew in that moment that I needed to stop dreaming of helping women and actually start helping women.

For the last 20 years or so, I have often pondered getting land, and a few of those tiny homes for women that have been abused to live. We would grow our own vegetables and I would help them get back on their feet and heal. Now, I’m adjusting that dream just a bit to fight for the rights of women in our country because some of us have had our rights snatched out from under us. After all, if you take away the rights of one, aren’t you effectively hurting us all? I am becoming a thorn in the side of the political machine by writing, and emailing politicians. It’s my way of protesting. I’m not one to sit idly by. I’m also saving up for the land I mentioned earlier, increasing my credit score, and looking for properties. Wouldn’t it be amazing if it were big enough to have campouts in the back?

I suppose my way is a little more Hecate or Lillith, and a little less Kali but we need that fire. We need people to feel that rage and feel that Kali energy. That is the kind of fire that makes change. It’s the kind of energy that doesn’t stop until the job is done or everything is destroyed. So Kali, Morrigan, Lilith, Hecate, and all of the powerful Goddesses, please lead us into battle. Let us see Morrigan’s crows as we charge through the courtroom doors, so that we will be victorious! Let us rise up, act out, and stop waiting for our turn! It’s time for us to take what is ours! It’s time to take our turn.

You are meant to change the world. You will change the world, no matter what you do. Simply by existing, you will change the world. Imagine how much you could change if you were mindful in your actions and listened to the Universe for clues. Someone you know is telling someone else about you. Maybe it was how you made them smile or how you showed them a kindness. Maybe it was how you stood up for them. Maybe it was because you listened to them. I often speak words of encouragement. I am generous with praise. If I see a trait, action, or talent that someone has, I tell them. If they did something good, I speak up. I do this with friends, strangers, and everyone in between.

Those of you who have read my column on a regular basis will know that I have a somewhat unique viewpoint in this time of conflict and division. As tragic as life has become, and not forgetting the suffering it’s caused, I see our present set of global crises as the natural consequences of the gradual, but tremendous social progress humanity has made over the past several hundred years. Contrary to many, I do not see them as indicators of the deterioration of human civilization. I see it all as a logical moment in the Great Human Reckoning. Something from which to derive hope. It makes perfect sense that we are where we are. Two vast human stories are unfolding concurrently with one another. Each are on their own independent learning curve, but greatly inform the actions and responses of the other. They are: the refining of the use of free will, and our inherent awareness of the value of human life. Of course, there are many ways to term those two concepts. You also might call it a learning curve of capitalism versus the inner pull of our divine spark. (continued on next page) Purrfectly Pagan | 21

(Continued) These two worlds, Money and Soul, in a literal battle of light and dark, create the push-pull dynamic engine that makes our human classroom function as it does. If there is a God, might not this tempestuous, but potentially fruitful, dynamic be by design? Is there benevolence here? The question becomes, which side is winning? Each is duking it out within our human forms, aspects of both greed and love, both fear and trust, both Earth and Heaven. We spiritual beings are having a darkly human experience at the moment. And we are betting on the soul to win this one. So, what’s a minister‘s job in this moment? Dispensing encouragement.

" In a general sense, dispensing encouragement is the equivalent of “spreading the good news" which all those of the priestly class should be not just speaking but actively demonstrating. The good news I want to identify in particular is hiding in plain sight. We’re just so afraid of the state of things, and rightfully so, that we forget to notice it, or its implications. (Continued) So now I will do my ministerial job to say this: There is so much good to be found. So much human progress, all right in the public record. Billions of people are constantly working together to solve the world's problems. It’s having an effect. That is the work of the soul. And it hasn’t given up for a second. Simultaneously, it is the work of money that invents institutions like slavery, for instance, and does its best to subvert social change that would live up to the higher ideals of the soul. Solely because it is not in their best fiscal interest to do so. But the good news is that the soul is and always has been winning. One need only take a step far enough back to see how the world has changed over the past several centuries with regard to the value of human life and thriving, against all odds. Take note of the increasing number of movements throughout our history that have resulted in sweeping changes to the very fabric of human society in favor of the equalization of all people. We should not forget just how far we’ve come when we look ahead to the struggles yet looming before us. We should be remembering it as fuel to steady us onward. Take the wins and keep fighting. (Continued) All the while money was and is doing its best to keep things as they were. To keep the caste system in place. To keep making their disproportionate amount of profit. But progress happens anyway. Against the tide of all power and money constantly reinvesting its gold in the right to unrestrictedly dig for more, we have continued to gain our rights one by one. Even when we sometimes lose them for a time it only makes us appreciate and demand them back better and stronger. Oppression creates pressure. Enormous resources must be put into building and maintaining a dam against a rising tide. Freedom is like water. The relationship between the two has only one inevitable outcome. Water always wins. Take heart. All shall be well because the hard part has already happened. We have already woken up. All of humanity now realizes we deserve to be safe, happy, free, and thriving. All of humanity knows it deserves a voice. It’s just a matter of time now before we finish refining the system to the point where that is actually our lived experience. (Continued) Rome wasn’t built in a day, nor was it destroyed in one. The systems of oppression that threaten us have already seen this coming. They’ve been building up their arsenals in preparation for this conflict for a very long time. Strengthen your heart with encouragement to keep loving, keep working together, keep inventing, keep ferreting out injustice. Help support those who become the victims of the shifting tides of human progress. Help the refugees and the immigrants. Help the poor. Raise people up. Help reeducate those whose industries become obsolete. They are afraid of their way of life disappearing because it is. Progress has its victims as old systems fall. We have to remember to be compassionate toward them as they sometimes violently resist change. Eventually, their swords will become plowshares. But someone still has to teach them to farm. All shall be well. The more we love one another, the more we will get through this. The more we recognize just how far we’ve come, the more courage it gives us to keep on going. We’ve been doing so well, especially this past century, that we’ve taken progress for granted. That’s a very good sign. Don’t let them convince you progress is a bad idea. Your soul isn’t buying it anyway. Keep up the good work.

Have you ever wondered, just where do witches come from? What actually brought us into this world? There are many who would blame a red horned devil, but the true answer is so mundane that it’s a bit unrealized. There have always been medicine people,
those
who
understood
illness and what the Earth Mother provided as remedy to our ailments. Beyond that though, at our basic human core we were not unlike what many call "witch" today. We honored nature because we were of nature and had to survive nature and all its wrath.

(Continued) Spirituality was such a deep part of us that we worshiped everything before us until the stories developed into all the deities we’ve born today. We worshiped the moon, the sun, the rain, the earth, and all they gave us. Witches still honor this. A witch quite simply is one who respects and understands nature while knowing and appreciating the reality that we come from it and therefore are it. Many witches are medicine people, using potions, tonics, herbs, and earth to heal all of Pachamama’s children. This is the truth in why anyone can wake up one day to her inner power and become a witch. We are all capable of connecting to our source; it’s rather like going home. We return to the understanding of how big, how remarkable, how incredible, how powerful the world is and all that are of it.

The word witch came from those who feared us. Before this word we were Shamans, Spirit Walkers, Earth Talkers, Alchemists, Mediums, Light Workers, Visionaries, Prophets, Seers, Healers. To feel safe and to align to some form of structure many of us connected to religions that worshiped nature in some form, Pagans, Wiccans, Buddhism, and so many others. Others walk the solitary path. Deities have been born of legend and lore throughout the beginning of time. Many spiritual individuals feel compelled to serve one deity or another. In my own Shamanic Prayer to invoke sacred space, we honor all deities, ancient ones, the one with a thousand names, and the unnameable one.

And then there are those of us who choose not to follow any higher authority outside of ourselves. True Atheists connect to themselves as the higher power of their universe and can be said to have a fuller understanding of spirituality than most of even the most renowned religions. Understanding who we are, where we came from in a core sense, to know this is in all of us is its own form of empowerment and liberation. When we embrace ourselves we embrace our own liberation.

So what’s a witch, you ask? A being who embraces their own empowerment with such ferocity they realize true liberation, that upholds all of nature to its true divinity. And with this I invite you and even beseech you, connect with me to our true beginning, connect with me to our likeness in being outcast by society, connect with me and realize your true potential. I am NOT advocating physical violence of any kind. Not on moral grounds, I simply cannot afford a lengthy trial and hot shot attorney. There are many times I daydream of violent revolution. Mostly when I worked dead end jobs for bum pay taking crap from a manager who had a purple punisher skull decal on the hood of his dodge charger….. Yeah, douchebag. I cant help it. I'm attracted to extremes and the more extreme and dangerous the thought, the more I seem drawn to it, like the proverbial moth to flame. It's a burden and a curse, which brings me to our topic of discussion: Curses. Curses are and always will be my Nuclear option. I do not take it lightly and it is absolutely a last resort. (Continued) It wouldn't be hard to advocate for it, nowadays. With a Supreme Court gutting Roe V. Wade and then playing footsies with the christian right by allowing prayer in public schools, one must ask, “How far is too far”’ Government is the Virginia creeper in our cultural garden, it encroaches bit by bit until the hard-earned fruits of our labor are choked out and left to die. Men and women who are braver than yours truly have sacrificed, bled, suffered and died for the liberty we do have, and to them, I owe a great debt of gratitude. I for one, am a particularly patriotic person. I have a very strange yet binding connection to the soil of my birth. I do not pretend my country is infallible or hasn't done horrible things in its past, but at the end of the day, when the chips are down, you stick with your countrymen, for good or ill. My connection and reverence for my nation and its unique patchwork of cultures and traditions does not extend to the Government. It’s the bureaucratic meatgrinder that has no real connection to the people or its traditions, yet thinks it has the inalienable right to tell the population how to run their lives. Yet as sick as it might make me, I refuse to take up arms against my people. That dark day I truly and without an ounce of humor, honestly hope never becomes a bitter reality. That being said, it doesn't mean that I can’t throw my spiritual monkey wrench into the works of the machine. As a patriot and self-identifying agent of chaos, I almost have a civic duty to do so.

(Continued) Spiritually, I'm much more of an Anarchist than is healthy to admit. And few things make me sick more than pro-life knuckleheads and the blending of church and state… ‘church and state’.. There are countless recipes for this nasty stuff, I prefer the iron nails and grave dirt in swamp water with a picture of said bastard…. I mean target. Bury in the corner of target’s property, and whistle dixie because they are SCREWED!!!!! Next on the list, Hoodoo/Voudou Doll. Yes, this works, like a mother. Make a figure of said jerk out of beeswax. Try to get a personal object of the target, if not a picture or merely writing their full name on a piece of paper. And like with all magick, focus your intention into the figure and then, the fun part: DESTROY THE FIGURE!!!! Beat, cuss, spit at, stomp and pummel this piece of trash until you are in a heap on the floor, exhausted and emptied of anger. Afterwards, don't give it a second thought. Your intent has been made, leave it be. Your mind should be clear and at peace. The target is lucky if he/she’s walking with crutches in 6 months or so.

(Continued) And last but certainly not least: The Destruction Ritual: Many different cultures have a version of this. From Santeria to Norse Blood Magick, the destruction ritual works fast, and it destroys. Destroys lives, wealth, health, literally eviscerates the target in question. The Order of Nine Angles are notorious for this, using it in group ritual to assassinate individuals they see as enemies of their Order, whether it be a former member or a politician. They have zero qualms about legit violence, and before you think you got me pegged, I am in no way affiliated with the O9A, though I do have colleagues within the Order. This can be done by oneself or in a coven, but unless you are a practicing Black Magickian, you may want to outsource this job to a practitioner who knows what they are doing. Just like with mixing chemical agents, this ritual can blow up in your face if you don't know what you're doing.

About John Shraden John Shaden was born on a leap year in 1988. He is a musician, black magickian, and a chaos gnostic satanist.
