March is all about celebrating women…and that is exactly what we are doing with this issue of FACES. Our March issue is a tribute to the legion of women who have dared to break the gender shackles around careers that have men stamped across it. We push our thumbs up to show our admiration for all these women, who, consciously or otherwise, have broken the mould of convention to pursue their dreams and follow their passions. We salute their spirit, as we talk to three women from different walks of life in our cover story, to highlight their determination to succeed. Our ‘In Conversation’, featuring the affable e ke Bend It Li Brazilian Ambassador to Oman, H.E. Mitzi Gurgel Beckham Valente Da Costa, presents a fresh perspective on women in diplomatic field. And, taking the theme of T unconventional careers further, we list out some of the unconventional career options that interested young girls could consider. Focus on women who aren’t afraid to break the mould and get on the ‘unconventional’ bandwagon

Career options for women who think out of the box Unconventional, according to Oxford dictionary, means ‘not based on or conforming to what is generally done or believed.’

W

hat is the norm in one place may be an exception in another, but, generally speaking, women have opted for jobs/careers that are seen as conventional. From teaching and nursing to secretarial and administration, the time-tested careers still continue to attract women, albeit without any rigid gender barriers, as men too have broken the professional shackles to occupy jobs that were traditionally seen as women’s domain. But with society enjoying a forward crest, the options, so to say, are unlimited for women who have the gumption to venture into newer zones or take the road less travelled. Here are some offbeat career paths for women who have what it takes to shed the traditional career cloak and reach to the top...

here is, apparently, no stopping Sofia Vergara. Her romance with Joe Manganiello of ‘True Blood’ and ‘How I Met Your Mother’ fame is set to culminate in marriage soon, and, in the meanwhile, her popular ‘Modern Family’ television series, which is in the middle of its sixth season, continues to earn her kudos. In 2014, Forbes ranked her as the 32nd most powerful woman in the world. She also topped Forbes’ list of highestearning television actresses, raking in an impressive $37 million in earnings this past year. She was also the topearning actress on US television in 2012 and 2013. It is estimated that she earns upwards of $30 million, annually, from her Modern Family salary, as well as various endorsement contracts. Sofía Margarita Vergara is a Colombian-American actress, model and businesswoman. She was born (on July 10, 1972) in Barranquilla, Colombia, to Margarita Vergara Dávila de Vergara, a homemaker, and Julio Enrique Vergara Robayo, a cattle producer. To her five brothers and sisters and hordes of cousins, she was ‘Toti’. She studied dentistry in Colombia, but left her studies before completion of all the semesters to pursue opportunities in modelling and show business. It was during a casual walk on a Colombian beach that a photographer discovered her and offered her modelling and television work. Her first appearance as a performer was at the age of 17 in a Pepsi commercial. In the late 90s she co-hosted two television shows for Spanish-language television network Univisión. It was ‘Chasing Papi’ that got her into the English film in 2003. She appeared in other films, including ‘Four Brothers’, ‘Meet the Browns’ and ‘Madea Goes to Jail’. Her television success

Presenting Sofia Vergara, the highest-paid actress in TV history earned her roles in ‘The Smurfs’, ‘New Year’s Eve’, ‘Happy Feet Two’, ‘The Three Stooges’, ‘Escape from Planet Earth’ and ‘Machete Kills’. As Gloria Delgado-Pritchett in the ‘Modern Family’, she has been nominated for Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013. Although Sofia is still waiting to pick an individual trophy despite several nominations, fans vouch that the massive popularity of Modern Family is in large part due to her effervescent comic presence. About her popularity in the series, she’d said: “It’s incredible. I never expected the kind of recognition Gloria would bring to me, even though I knew it was a great character and I worked with the writers to bring out different aspects of her Latino culture. I think of Gloria as a symbol of the powerful character that Latino women have…” In news recently, following the news of her impending marriage to Joe Manganiello, she’d blamed the paparazzi for the secrecy behind their relationship. She’d met Joe Manganiello at the White House Correspondents’ dinner last year. “I thought he was very handsome, almost too handsome. But then we met again a month later after being introduced by a friend and we start seeing each other after that,” she revealed. Sofia was named one of People magazine’s ‘50 most beautiful people’ and has been recognised by both the Hollywood Reporter and Billboard as one of the most influential Latin women in Hollywood

Breaking the mould …

‘Two roads diverged in a wood, and I – I took the one less travelled by, And that has made all the difference.’ - Robert Frost

W

ith every new paradigm shift in gender roles, women have climbed higher rungs in the symbolic career ladder, some even opting to take the road less travelled. These are the gutsy ones who aren’t wary of taking on new and challenging roles. Be it in the oil field or the racetrack, they have found ways to follow their heart and carve a niche for themselves; some even willing to consider nontraditional jobs like masonry. According to the U.S. Department of Labour, non-traditional jobs are those where women make up less than 25 percent of the workforce, including prime cabinet positions as well as those ranging from carpentry to chiropractor, painter to pilot and electrician to engineer. Changes in attitudes to a woman’s role, from the clichéd concept of ‘a woman’s place is in her home’, has also helped break the gender shackles and pave the path of unconventional careers for women seeking that much more from their lives. Not surprisingly, Omani women too who have been propelled to explore avenues that have previously been seen as male domain. That they continue to establish their mark in different sectors, be it the diplomatic field or the business zone, is the proof of the global wave to push the bar higher... This cover story is a tribute to women who have dared to push the envelope and emerge successful. We present here the stories of Maha Masti, first Omani woman pilot with Oman Air, Laila Al Sinani, Oman’s first female racer, and Vaishali Jesrani, Oman Cricket women’s cricket coordinator.

cover STORY

Maha Masti: Flying High

A senior first officer pilot with Oman Air, Maha Masti describes her responsibility as “flying this multimillion machine from point A to B safely and efficiently.” She’d joined Oman Air cadets programme immediately after her graduation from Sultan Qaboos University’s College of Commerce and Economics. Thereafter she travelled to Australia to get her flying license. She admits that it was a challenge being the only girl who made it through in this field...in the national career. “I had to prove that women are just equal to men, performing any job, regardless of which field we are talking about. And I should highlight that our company and colleagues are very supportive and encouraging for me to accomplish my ambitions,” she explains. This passion for flying began in her childhood. Tracing those early days, she says, “I was always very curious to try everything new and adventurous since my childhood. I used to travel often with my father and was amazed by the flight crew…flying these big airplanes away from ground. I always considered it a very prestigious job. And my father used to encourage me whenever I talked to him about it.”

Maha Masti’s take on life and her unconventional job… What is the biggest risk you’ve taken in your career? Flying itself is a risk; everything we encounter in everyday flying is a risk, including weather, technical issues, our fitness for flying, etc. Have you ever been a victim of workplace gender discrimination? No, thank God! What, according to you, is a conventional job for a woman? A woman can make any job conventional. It’s only the matter of her degree of professionalism. What brings out the competitive streak in you? People telling me I can’t do something… It brings out the best from me to perform my work in the most professional way I can. Who is your inspiration to excel in your chosen field? My husband inspires me to excel at my job. I try to copy his excellence and professionalism at work. Any turning points in your life that helped you decide on the chosen career? I always wanted to be a pilot. Who is your role model…? I don’t have one. No one is perfect enough. Which gives us all the credit for seeking perfection all the time.

cover STORY

What is your favourite childhood memory? I had a normal, decent and beautiful childhood, full of memories... I would need a separate interview to talk about them all. What is your success mantra? Forget luck; live by intent. Is there anything other than flying you would rather do? If I wasn’t a pilot, I might have been an engineer or a doctor and that goes for my love for studying scientific materials. Does being a pilot prevent you from being or doing something you really like? No, I’m what I always wanted to be; doing the things that I always wanted to do. If you were to write an autobiography, what would it be called? Knowledge and ambition doesn’t have an end point. What adjectives would your colleagues/friends use to describe you? Intelligent, ambitious and humble. Any words of advice for young girls seeking to explore new/ unexplored avenues? There is nothing that is impossible in accomplishing your goals in life. The key words are ‘willingness’ and ‘hard work’. Where do you see yourself ten years from now? I see myself fulfilling my dream of being a captain and accomplishing the rest of my ambitions, apart from flying.

Laila Al Sinani: On the Fast Track

She is the first female Omani pilot; first female Omani to participate in V8 Supercars and in an international event; first female to win a racing title in Oman; and, now, the first female in the world of drifting in the Gulf. She is also the co-founder of RC Sports. A race enthusiast since her childhood, she maintains that it wasn’t about seeking a career in racing. “I wouldn’t say I found racing,” she says, “people who know me would say I’ve always been all about racing. I’m grateful that I was quickly exposed to karting, and, as kids we loved being at the track. Of course, I was aware that I was stepping into male-dominated territory, and perhaps those were my cues in some ways…the drive to keep proving that I could be just as good.” Laila Sinani has, in a way, explored different facets of non-traditional career options. As she puts it, “My degree is in piloting, which was another male-dominated industry I stepped into… There’s no chapter in a textbook that can prepare you for life’s unfairness. That’s why I’m also grateful for the education that I received on the track, how to have tenacity and, importantly, how to be strong. Women are not generally nurtured to be strong, it is seen as unfeminine across all cultures. It’s very difficult to teach equal opportunity, or even why it’s important, from a textbook. It has to be ingrained in our beliefs and values.”

Laila Sinani’s take on life and her unconventional job… What is the greatest strength you bring to your organisation? My ‘drive’ and my passion. What is the biggest risk you’ve taken in your career? The biggest risk has been switching from karting to drift! It’s a new concept of racing. Have you ever been a victim of workplace gender discrimination? Yes, but I bite back! How did you strike a balance? We need to get the message out that we need to confront discrimination head on - you can’t stay silent! What, according to you, is a conventional job for a woman? Conventionally, women weren’t encouraged to work! Women can work anywhere and the whole point of equality is that they are allowed and supported and encouraged to work anywhere. What brings out the competitive streak in you? Nothing has to bring out the streak, because I’m competitive by nature. Who is your inspiration to excel in your chosen field? Before I was racing just for fun, but now, as my children are growing older, it’s about showing my kids that they should push for their dreams too. Any turning points in your life that helped you decide on the chosen career? No Who is your role model, and why? My grandmother; she was an extremely strong and revered woman. What is your favourite childhood memory? The first time I ever got in a kart and drove is literally the best memory I have from childhood. What is your success mantra? What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Is there anything other than racing you would rather do? There really isn’t, although, I would have loved to be an astronaut, but I don’t have the patience for all that studying! Does being a racing driver prevent you from being or doing something you really like? Not at all. If you were to write an autobiography, what would it be called? Life in the Fast Lane! What adjectives would your colleagues/friends use to describe you? They would definitely say competitive add fun…

Any words of advice for young girls seeking to explore newer avenues? The most important requirement for courage is to be true to yourself. When you have that strength, then the haters who hold you back, no longer matter. Where do you see yourself ten years from now? I was just joking today with my team that we are still going to be doing the endurance 24-hour race when we are 50 years old! I definitely see myself involved in racing for my entire career; I want to be promoting young talent as soon as possible.

Vaishali Jesrani: i: Team Player

Cricket, the purported ‘gentleman’ss game’, may have crossed the globall gender boundary decades ago, but ut ke in football loving Oman, it didn’t make its mark until the late 2000s. It was the rl that initiative of one cricket-loving girl h women’s cricket received thumbs up iin the country. Vaishali Jesrani, Women’s Cricket Coordinator under Oman Cricket, has come a long way since she dabbled in the sport as a schoolgirl. She is today women’s cricket coordinator, developing and managing local camp, arranging league matches and knockout tournaments. It was in 2007 that she spearheaded the start of women’s cricket. The following year she participated in the first tour to Thailand with the under 19 team, and, in 2009, experienced her first overseas victory in Malaysia. Late last year, Oman Cricket hosted the inaugural GCC Women’s Cricket Championship, which was another first in her crown. To pursue her interests, she has attended various cricket coaching programmes; she recently completed the Level 2 coaching programme in Lahore, Pakistan. She credits her father as the biggest inspiration in her life. “I come from a cricket passionate family,” she notes, stating that she believes, ‘performance comes from passion, not pressure’. The biggest challenge, she notes is building up the game in the region and making a mark in the international circuit.

Vaishali Jesrani’s take on life… What is the greatest strength you bring to your organisation? Being able to handle the most important card of women’s cricket. What is the biggest risk you’ve taken in your career? I am not someone who takes unnecessary risks, as I am answerable to so many. Of course, I understand risks are a part of the game, but it should be well planned and analysed. Have you ever been a victim of workplace gender discrimination? Yes, it does happen, as it is no more a gentleman’s game and people tend to generally compare us with male cricketers’ skills and techniques. How did you strike a balance? By building self-confidence and having a positive mind. What, according to you, is a conventional job for a woman? One that helps maintain a balance between career and personal life. What brings out the competitive streak in you? My gut feeling in myself… If you fail at least you have tried and learned something. Who is your inspiration to excel in your chosen field? My father is my biggest inspiration. Any turning points in your life that helped you decide on the chosen career? Travelling with my father’s team to different countries around the world and seeing women play cricket.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni for changing the game; Sachin for being the god of cricket; and Brett Lee for his gutsy bowling.

Among Equals

First Brazilian Ambassador to Oman, H. E. Mitzi Gurgel Valente Da Costa, talks about the challenges of being a woman diplomat, as she traces her diplomatic journey around the world

“I have never really experienced any difference as a woman diplomat,” states H.E. Mitzi Gurgel Valente Da Costa, Brazilian Ambassador to Oman, but admits that the challenge of being the first Brazilian Ambassador to Oman posed certain challenges. “In that sense, yes, it was a double challenge as this is my first posting as an Ambassador. Fortunately, Omanis have made me feel very welcome here, and I have never felt the need to compare the difference between a man and a woman diplomat,” she adds. On another note, though, she agrees that a woman diplomat may not find spousal support during the placements abroad, as, generally speaking, it is the woman who follows her diplomat husband and not the other way round. “A man following a woman is unusual… When I started my

diplomatic career in the late 70s, it was something of a shock to many people that my husband accompanied me. It may be more common now, but it is still something that people look at as peculiar. You need someone special to deal with that and not let it destroy your relationship. That would be the main challenge of being a woman diplomat. “Many of the women diplomats I know have husbands who stay behind in their home countries, and that, I think, puts a strain on the marriage. It makes it more difficult and many people get divorced…” she explains, pointing out that she was fortunate to marry a man who is able and willing to travel with her. “I was lucky that my husband managed to come to all the postings

that I had,” she points out, adding, “But then again, I also had to return more often to Brazil than I would have liked, so that he could also advance his own career.” H.E. Mitzi Da Costa’s diplomatic placements have taken her to Los Angeles, Sydney, Denmark, Uruguay, Rome and London with several postings in between in Brazil, before coming to Oman. She lives here with her husband, while her daughter, who wants to pursue a career in the diplomatic field, works in the Ministry of Environment in Brazil. During her initial days at the Embassy here, she recalls that there were around 500 Brazilian expatriates living in Oman. The number has dwindled to 300 or so, owing to a variety of

However, she hastens to add that she enjoys that aspect of life. “Four years is the longest I have lived anywhere, including Brazil,” she says, listing out the challenges of meeting new people, seeing and adapting to new culture, as her spurs. It was her father’s diplomatic career that saw her travelling all around the world. It helped her learn French, English, Spanish and a smattering of German, Italian, etc., in addition to her mother tongue Portuguese. She

has some knowledge of Arabic, but hasn’t mastered fluency. “Age does not rhyme well with learning,” she quips. Surprisingly though, the diplomatic bug did not bite her for a very long time. As she recalls, “When I was growing up, I did not want to be a diplomat at all. I had no idea what they did. I majored in science and wanted to become a scientist… But then, I decided that I didn’t want to live in the same place for the rest of my life and my father suggested, ‘why not go into diplomatic field’, and well, I did and it was the best decision I could take…”

Interestingly, her father was the first non-resident Ambassador to Oman. “…And, I am the first resident Ambassador, and that makes the connection,” muses the Ambassador, as she points out that she has lived most of her life out of Brazil. “Every

Beckham Calling all wannabe women footballers…

T

hat football is a national passion is an established fact; the makeshift football pitches, hemming the main roads and the by lanes of the city, are proof enough. But is this passion for the game shared by women too? Are Omani women ready to move from the sidelines and enter the grounds to play at national level? While the answer to that lies conspicuously in the culture and heritage of the country, the fact that the authorities concerned have initiated the process to begin at the grassroots level does portend well for this sport loving country. The makeshift pitches, which otherwise witness vigorous practice sessions in the evenings and weekends, may not immediately witness ‘Bend it like Beckham’ style practices, but the football horizon is slowly sprucing up for some pleasant changes. As Haroon Amur Al-Bartamani, FIFA and Asian Football Confederation goalkeeping instructor, maintains, the focus is on initiating women’s football from grassroots, with schools acting as the foundation for training. “It was decided to start from grassroots, owing to the cultural perceptions… Hopefully things will look better in a couple of years,” he states. FIFA will also strive to promote gender equality and the empowerment of women worldwide and ensure ‘Equal access to football for girls and women, including clubs, schools and colleges’. the focus is on youth to build a strong national team, one that could reach competition level in the near future. At present, women’s football is restricted to schools, which have their own student teams. According to Haroon Bartamani, the need of the hour is to create better awareness regarding the game and explore the possibilities of bridging the gender gaps, while reaching out to all nationalities. “We want all interested football players to be a part of the game through the Oman Football Association. We want them to know they are welcome… Anyone interested in football could contact OFA and we will share our programmes. They could support us to introduce the game. season. Plans are on to concentrate on young wannabe footballers with the six to 12-year segment receiving a boost. The Association, in coordination with the Ministry of Sports Affairs and the Ministry of Education, plans to select students interested in football from schools across the country and provide avenues to train them in the sport. Additionally, establishing indoor areas for practicing football are also on the agenda in girls’ schools. However, putting women’s team together isn’t an easy task, notes Haroon Bartamani, owing to the cultural mores. “We are more tuned to produce coaches, referees and administrators to assist in the formation of a team. It would be easier to put together a younger team…” he maintains, pointing out that creating a full-scale professional women’s team would be difficult at this stage. Conservative communities are not open to the idea of women playing football. So, for the present,

If you are a dessert person like us, you will not be blamed for lingering around this table before moving on to the beautiful al fresco section of the restaurant. From the regular cheesecakes and pastries to the theme night specials - Gajar Halwa, Rasgulla, Gulab Jamun – it is temptation all the way. As expected, the most popular ular utter Indian item on the menu is the butter otel chicken; it never fails to attract Hotel guests, he explains. “We source all our ingredients fresh and create our own masala,” he points out, while explaining what makes their dishes exclusive and tasty. The Hotel has its own little kitchen garden, wherein they grow curry leaves, coriander leaves, basil and lemon grass. To make the dishes palatable for all sections of the society, more so for Europeans/Americans and Omanis who have found a liking for Indian food, the spice levels are kept at medium.

It is an eyeful, one that could easily be tummy full if you do not want to fet area. But venture into the main buffet ening that is it is the theme of the evening celebrated with the chaat corner near the salads. It is a Wednesday and the Olivos popular theme ‘Indian Curry Night’ is on, catering to foodies who have acquired a taste for all things curry in their quest to appreciate Indian food. The chaat corner is the symbolic feature of this theme night, with pani puri and dahi wadas ruling the roost. For the uninitiated, pani puri is a very popular Indian street food, and so is dahi wada, which is served as a snack in most Indian restaurants. Although it is more about self-service, Sous Chef Murkesh tells us that the restaurant staff could prepare the pani puri for guests who aren’t sure how to go about putting one together. All this, even before we move to the outdoor terrace section, which is hosting the themed buffet, featuring aromatic dishes from different parts of India. It is a confluence of dishes with items from south and north India finding a spot on the buffet section, which changes every week. The theme night opens at 6pm and it makes sense to start early if you want to do justice to the food laid out for you. A sampling of the chaat and the salads could help build your appetite, as you sit outdoors, soaking in the picturesque garden and the swimming pool, enjoying the final lap of the cool wintry evenings. The day was still young as we began our leisurely dinner, making sure that we tucked into everything that looked appetising (well…everything!). The main buffet section is packed with curry items, rice, tandoori, kebabs, and the like. And, on our special night out, we had small helpings of tomato and coriander soup, tandoori

Obviously, we were completely satiated by the time we reached the tandoori section, but well, as always, it had to end with the dessert and to keep with the theme, we opted for gulab jamun. This is one theme night that will cajole you to return to savour other Indian dishes from Chef Murkesh. It is, however, best enjoyed, if you have worked up an appetite for the long meal Enjoy!

Being written off by many as high cholesterol source, eggs are making a comeback, says Anu Bahl, Dietician & Clinical Nutritionist

I

t’s true that egg yolks have a lot of cholesterol - and so may affect blood cholesterol levels; but they also contain nutrients that may help lower the risk for heart disease, including protein, vitamins B12 and D, riboflavin and folate. Recent research has shown that moderate egg consumption - up to one a day - does not increase heart disease risk in healthy individuals and can be part of a healthy diet. Also, it is saturated fat in the diet, not dietary cholesterol that influences blood cholesterol levels the most. I believe eggs are the best source of protein for lacto ovo vegetarians (vegetarians whose diet includes dairy products and eggs). Check out some easy ways to maximise the benefits you derive from eggs without overdoing on the cholesterol; also learn why they are a better option for high quality protein, as compared to chicken, meat and other nonvegetarian options.

Nutrition benefits:

Eggs are rich in several nutrients such as betaine and choline. During pregnancy and breast-feeding, an adequate supply of choline is

particularly important, since choline is essential for normal brain development. Eggs also contain more Vitamin D than they did ten years ago, due to change in chicken feed, which helps to protect bones, preventing osteoporosis and rickets. They are very high in good quality protein and have no carbohydrates, which make them a good option for weight loss, as it keeps us full for a long time.

Egg Whites:

The bulk of the egg protein lies in the egg white along with folate and other B vitamins, minerals like selenium, calcium, magnesium and sodium along with minimum calories.

nutrients. They are rich in calcium and phosphorus required for bones and teeth. It is an excellent source of Vit B12. (People who have difficulty controlling their total and LDL cholesterol may want to be cautious about eating egg yolks and instead choose foods made with egg whites.)

Health CHECK

Health matters… Taking a cue from ‘Men are from Mars and Women from Venus’, which celebrated gender differences on an emotional platform, we present the health problems that are specific to women

Women not only have unique health issues, some of the health issues, which concern both men and women, affect women differently. While women-specific issues include pregnancy, menopause and conditions related to the female organs, they also differ in the severity of some common health conditions. - Women are more likely to die following a heart attack than men - Women are more likely to show signs of depression and anxiety than men - The effects of sexually transmitted diseases can be more serious in women - Osteoarthritis affects more women than men - Women are more likely to have urinary tract problems

Main Health Concerns

Heart Disease Heart disease is the leading killer in both men and women, causing about 29 percent of deaths in women. Although statistics show that more men die of heart disease than women, often, women aren’t aware of the problem until it is too late. Studies have shown that the symptoms, which are typical for women, are either missed or under diagnosed, until it is too late to help. Breast Cancer Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women; it is second to lung cancer as the leading cause of death for women. According to medical experts, though, the fear of breast cancer can sometimes be exaggerated, stopping women from going to their doctors for screening, or pushing women to make rash decisions about mastectomy, when it may not be necessary.

30

March 2015

Osteoporosis Women are more likely to get osteoporosis than men for several reasons, mainly because women tend to have smaller, thinner bones than men; estrogen, a hormone in women that protects bones, also decreases sharply when women reach menopause, causing bone loss. In the 5 to 7 years following menopause, a woman can lose up to 20 percent of her bone density. Approximately one in two women over age 50 is said to break a bone because of osteoporosis. A woman’s risk of breaking a hip is equal to her combined risk of breast, uterine and ovarian cancer. Depression Owing to a variety of factors, depression is said to affect more women than men; women are about twice as likely as men to suffer from depression. Although some of the signs and symptoms of depression are the same for both genders, women tend to experience certain symptoms more often than men. Hormonal changes are also said to trigger the condition, particularly after pregnancy or around menopause

Health CHECK

Women, Weight and Wellness Being obese or even overweight could have a bearing on a host of health concerns, more so for women, who tend to pile on the pounds with age

H

ormonal or otherwise, women are said to be more likely to gain weight in the late 30s (men in mid-40s). A study on the weight patterns found that weight gain among women is marked between the ages of 35 and 40, with 38 being the most dangerous age of all. This weight gain is attributed to a variety of factors, including more than one helping at dinner, getting comfortable in relationships and long working hours. Comfort eating in reaction to stress and boredom, getting married, having babies and becoming less active are the reasons attributed by women for weight gain in the study.

Menopause and weight gain

Hormonal changes associated with menopause are said to make women more likely to gain weight around abdomen than around the hips and thighs. But hormonal changes alone aren’t responsible for triggering menopausal weight gain, as it is compounded by age, as well as lifestyle and genetic factors. Generally speaking, muscle mass typically diminishes with age, while fat increases. Consequently, with the loss of muscle mass, the rate at which the body uses calories also reduces, making it more challenging to maintain a healthy weight. This places the onus on a corresponding increase in physical activity to maintain a balance. However, genetic factors also play a role in menopause weight gain. Besides, stress induced by children leaving home, divorce the death of a spouse, or major life changes could affect diet or exercise habits and also contribute to weight gain.

Risk factors in menopausal weight gain

Menopause weight gain could have serious health implications, including increased risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and various types of cancer, including colorectal cancer and breast cancer. Although the accumulated weight cannot be reversed, there are ways to control weight, with some basic steps:

Exercise: Aerobic activity and strength training could help shed excess pounds and maintain a healthy weight. For most healthy adults, moderate aerobic activity, such as brisk walking, for at least 150 minutes a week or vigorous aerobic activity, such as jogging, for at least 75 minutes a week, is recommended. In addition, strength-training exercises are recommended at least twice a week. Diet Control: Diet is essential with age, to not only lose the excess weight, but also to maintain the current weight. For example, you would need about 200 fewer calories a day during your 50s than you did during your 30s and 40s. To reduce calories without skimping on nutrition, attention needs to be paid to the food and beverages consumed. More fruits, vegetables and whole grains are essential, in addition to lean sources of protein. Importance needs to be paid to portion sizes, as the focus should be on consuming fewer calories each day, particularly fat calories. Women need about 200 fewer calories a day to maintain their weight as they enter their mid to late 40s. However, since menopausal women are at increased risk of bone density loss, it’s important to include daily calcium requirements if trying to lose weight

It’s a FAMILY AFFAIR after all “Fill your carts with veggies, fruits, nuts, cereals, low fat diary and seafood”, advises Dr. Praveen Jeyapathy, Diabetologist - M.D (Rom), PGDFM, M.Sc (DDFS) – of Apollo Sugar, as he narrates the story of Mr. X to highlight the importance of diet to keep diabetes at bay

I

t was 9 am and Mr. X was ready for a day of shopping with his wife and son. The engines roared and the car zoomed by with people who were all on their way to fill their carts and fridges. The wheels of the trolley moved about like a skating wizard being filled with the richest food for the table and the tummies back home. Carbonated beverages, high fat cheese, processed meat, white bread and pastries soon took a big bite of Mr. X’s wallet and in turn gave him an extra inch on his waist line… Oh, sorry, three inches in all for his family to be precise. The inches multiplied with time, only for him to be diagnosed with diabetes later sending out a warning siren to the rest of his family. Exercise, counselling, medications and a diet plan filled most of his time for the next week or so. Old habits are hard to change, especially when your son is seen enjoying a fine plate of caramelised banana pudding sitting across you on the table, while you are having lettuce and turnips sprinkled with a touch of olive oil. Late night escapades in the kitchen and fridge ensured that the blood glucose values continued to remain high; the higher it went the lower Mr. X felt, both in body and mind. Frustration began showing in his work and interpersonal relationships at home. When things began getting out of control, his wife and son encouraged him to go back and see the doctor. A diabetic patient’s lifestyle is not a doomed one. It’s one in which very healthy choices are made with regards to food and lifestyle. In a way it can be regarded as the right

Marc Ma March arrc ch 20 2 2015 015 15

way to live. How can eating healthy and exercising daily be something for the sick man only? It’s for all of us to practice, and one should remember that having a parent with diabetes increases one’s risk of having diabetes. So take this as an opportunity for change and start early because once you have diabetes it can only be controlled and never cured! So fill your carts with veggies, fruits, nuts, cereals, low fat diary and seafood and give the rest a miss. Ensure that you free yourself from being a couch potato and be on the move for at least 30 minutes daily. You can be sure you are on your way to a healthy life then. It’s a lesson the family embraced at once. Healthy living begins at home for a diabetic and the change should be wholesome and complete. Adequate support from the family is imperative or else the change will only be harder. The entire family stands to be benefitted from this. In essence, when you help your loved ones who are diabetic to adhere to a healthy lifestyle, and, in the process, get involved and incorporate a lot of it in your life, you are actually helping him/her and yourself. After all, it’s a family affair isn’t it?

Breastfeeding linked to higher IQ?

A long-term study has pointed to a link between breastfeeding and intelligence. The study of nearly 3,500 babies, from all walks of life, found that those who had been breastfed for longer went on to score higher on IQ tests as adults. Experts say the results, while not conclusive, appear to back advice that babies should be exclusively breastfed for six months. However, they say mothers should still have a choice about whether or not to do it.

Women’s Wom Wo men’s memories better than men’s

Scientists have now proven that a man’s memory is worse than a woman’s, and also pointed out that their brains are smaller, at least the part that controls memories. In a study of 1,246 cognitively normal people between the ages of 30 and 95, researchers found that while memory started to decline for both sexes at age 30, male memory was worse than women overall, especially after age 40. And in males, the hippocampus, the part of the brain that controls memory, was also smaller than women’s, especially after age 60.

Inactive childhood linked to middle-aged couch potatoes

Children who lead inactive lives are likely to grow up to become middle-aged couch potatoes, according to a study. Researchers compared the TV viewing habits of more than 6,000 British people born in a single week in 1970, at the ages of 10 and 42, to arrive at that conclusion. They advice parents to increase children’s physical activity to ensure they become fit and healthy adults. They also acknowledge that for today’s children, TV viewing is often replaced by time on computers, smartphones or tablets.

HRT linked to possibility of stroke

Women on HRT pills should be aware that there is a small chance of an increased risk of blood clots and possibly stroke, is the advice from researchers who studied the link via medical trials involving some 40,000 women. While HRT pills can ease menopausal symptoms and may offer some protection against heart disease, this must be weighed against other possible harms. Women facing the dilemma should discuss it with their doctor, they say.

Glow On… Experience Endermolift at Essence Spa and bask in the glow for the next 48 hours Tried & Tested

Essence Spa invited FACES team to come along and experience their new Endermolift anti-aging treatment, from Mobilift M6, earlier this month, with promises of rejuvenating the skin with a fresh glow. Not surprisingly, we were hooked… The visible glow, following 30-minutes of pampering at the hands of the expert beauticians, made us wish we had planned it around one of those special party weekends. The ‘Glow Endermolift’ from Mobilift 6 is designed to up the glamour quotient instantly and we, certainly, would be heading the Essence Spa way before our next party do. One of the main advantages of the New Endermolift is that treatments (for both men and women) don’t last long (from 10 to 30 minutes) and can be easily scheduled during a lunch break, which is what we did. The treatment is a 15-minute session, with the beautician directing the impressive looking machine around the face, to gently exfoliate and even out the skin tone. We learned from the friendly staff manning the Spa that makeup artists of film stars use it as an ideal ‘flash’ treatment for special occasions. The treatment procedure doubles the reflection of light on the skin, and the glow lasts for as long as two days. Our ‘Glow’ session was followed by another 15-minute ‘targeted’ session, aimed at clearing the dark circle around the eyes. The machine targets the area of your choice – upper facial area, eye puffiness and dark circles, eye wrinkles, mouth area, etc. – with a quick and effective treatment. The machine works at different depths of the skin, thanks to sequential suction; it targets cell stimulation, thanks to variable lift pulse speeds. Give Mobilift 6 a try and, like us, you too would be tempted to follow it up with regular sessions to keep the glow on

WITH MODELS ON THE RUNWAY SPORTING LONGISH HAIRSTYLES, THE TREND FOR THE AVE MOVED SEASON APPEARS TO HAVE BACK TO LENGTHY MANES NES

M

odels have a way of getting away way with even messy hairstyles, but whether ‘you’ can get away with one such style is dependent on a variety y of ry it factors… Most importantly, can you carry with panache? But with hair trends moving towards serious rious length, the options of wearing it high on the head or down in loose waves have just gotten exciting. If you have been sporting short style all asiest, along, gear up to grow that bob. The easiest, ne and the most popular styles of all, one that has stood the test of time, is the ponytail. If you have been following the runway styles you would have noticed that ponytails have moved from the high and sleek one to looser and lower style. Other favourites for the season are bohemian waves - those barely there cascades, braids and twists - from twisted rope braids and corn-row buns to classic braids, and big buns, which have shed their matronly look to embrace a cool chic appearance with Japanese-inspired ‘sumo knots’. Other styles to watch out for are bombshell blowouts and mixed materials. Big, sleek blowouts and bouncy curls might need you to use rollers, but the final look will have you smiling. Alternately, you could give your mundane ponytail or bun a look of art with ornate and playful accessories. And, of course, the ever-reliable slick, shiny hair, for the fresh-out-of-water look. Simply part your hair in the middle and comb it back…

HOLLYWOOD’S NEW ‘IT GIRL’ COULD DAKOTA JOHNSON BE THE NEW ‘IT GIRL’ IN FASHION?

A

s you know, each year Hollywood’s ‘It Girl’ finds herself in the arms of the fashion world and it looks like Dakota is the one taking center stage this year. She is the lead actress in the year’s biggest movie, ‘50 Shades of Grey’, and she is the daughter of two stars; but, somehow, given her past work, she seemed like the least likely choice for superstardom. However, she came on top this year. Dakota’s main advantage is she keeps it simple, she’s not overdone and she doesn’t want to look uncomfortable; her ponytail is always the choice for accessory matched with something elegant. Why do I think Dakota can make it big? Her 2015 Oscars dress and her latest attendance at the 2015 Dior show at Paris Fashion Week had her looking simple, yet effortless having her land headlines inter nationally… something even Kim Kardashian failed to do, as she went ahead and dyed her hair for attention. Dakota’s trademark bangs are going to take her far and I think that with two more movies coming out, she is going to be dominating the fashion scene. And, who knows, maybe she will be taking it to risk in the coming years. I’m happy to say that I always thought she will make i t and she has topped my expectations. Unconventional… that’s the name of the game

Fashion:

Rules meant to be broken

Being trendy is all about following the fashion dictates, while being unconventional is only about breaking those rules Trends are on a constant ‘change’ mode, creating an element of urgency among fashionistas who want to fit into the grove. They are not wary of the fashion slave tag, as it reflects their chic status and a sophisticated attitude. But, for those who belong to the tribe of unconventional fashionistas who have forgotten what it means to toe-the-line, the following could act as a fashion guideline. Check out the fashion rules that could, rather should, be broken, to up your ‘unconventional’ quotient.

Your shoes/bag should match with your outfit

Go ahead, break this one easily. Exercise your freedom of choice and indulge your fun streak with a mix of accessories. Remove the matronly touch from your appearance by using accessories to create a playful mix of colours.

Don’t mix up the prints

From stripes and polka dots to leopard and paisley, go ahead and find your combination of prints without getting inhibited by the fashion rules.

Navy is navy and black is black, and never the twain shall meet

This is one fashion fallacy that you need to shelve right away. The two can easily enhance your chic appearance and can look distinctly different.

Wear sequins and metallic clothes only in the evenings

Some sequined clothes may look apt only during the night, but that should not restrict you from wearing sparkling clothes during the day.

Long dresses and pants are only for tall folks

Height should not dictate your choice of clothes. A good tailor can make almost any dress look perfect on you. Remember, whether it’s a long dress or wide-leg trousers, it all comes down to the perfect fit.

Stockings/socks suit only closed footwear

Brown and black?

Save sneakers for the gym

Overalls, you said?

Naaa… The trick lies in pairing tights with open toe shoes; silver shoe against black tights can add up to your look. You could even hit it off with socks and sandals. Sneakers are in trend this season; but even if it weren’t, you have no reason to refrain from slipping into one while heading to work or going out during the weekend.

Surprise, surprise, this fashion nono has been bypassed by most fashionistas who have found their wow quotient in black and brown. The two colours can project a sleek and contrasting look. Overalls are definitely not for kids alone. A well-fitting distressed pair is just perfect for a day out. Go ahead, dare to be unconventional!

Sweatpants are for home

Sweatpants are comfortable and no one can grudge you for wearing them while running errands and even…even date nights. A nice top could do the trick or you could opt for a chambray shirt and add a strappy heel to add to the look.

Keep gold and silver away from each other

Just like navy and black, the no mixing gold and silver is another breakable colour rule. Experts have long learnt that metallic’s of any shade complement each other, whether it’s your jewellery or accessories.

For the

man DATE

Woman in your life You, probably, joined the world in celebrating women early this month and then followed it with a tribute to all the mothers, but do you know how to treat women right?

Y

ou don’t need to promise her the moon to make her feel good; simply follow a few tried and tested steps to treat her right and lo, you have got it made…

Honesty Always

Be honest, whatever it takes. Women, generally, like the idea of options in their lives and want to hear the truth. Don’t make her feel that she needs to snoop and pry when something is not going right.

Listen…

Yes, don’t just hear what she is saying; listen to even things that she isn’t talking about. Men and women do not share similar communication skills. Studies have shown that average women use spoken words three times more than men; they verbalise feelings more than they communicate a thought. So, listen… Pay attention to her talk and give appropriate comments or even grunts to make her realise you are listening. She probably only needs you to listen and not offer any advice or problemsolving tips.

Communication

Without going contrary to the ‘listen’ advice, do remember that you need to communicate; that means actually talk and not just grunt or nod. Grunting, sighing, head-nodding, eyebrowraising…do not constitute communicating. If the woman in your life has been asking you ‘Are you listening to me?’ chances are that you are not giving appropriate replies. She wants conversation, so speak up!

52

March 2015

man DATE Give her space

Agree, communication is important, but there are times when women want to be on their own. They like to have their alone time. Respect her space, whether she is at work or at home.

Be observant

This does not mean noticing a wart on her face and pointing it out with a smirk on your face. It is that skill you develop in picking up little nuances in her life, understanding what she wants by simply listening to how her day has progressed. As one relationship guru advised, ‘Observe her lifestyle and try to enrich it with your contribution’.

A little appreciation, please

Have a problem remembering all the important dates in your lives? No problem, find ways to show your appreciation to her. Although gifts may always be welcome, doing your bit to ease her workload or stress would go a long way.

Show support

Financial support isn’t what is required to show her you care. Simply make her realise that you support her beliefs and her plans. If you feel any of the plans/goals are unreasonable, find a way to talk to her without discouraging.

Respect her individuality

Like you, she too has her individuality and she might feel the need to assert it. When you treat her with respect, you are bound to get it with interest in return. It may even be the easiest way to her heart. Make sure you convey to her that you also respect her friends and family. Saying anything negative about them or abusing them could spoil everything.

and play a proactive role in the relationship.

Be romantic

Of course you cannot be romantic all the time, but it doesn’t require much to show your romantic side. Just don’t overdo it with gifts and flowers. Even small little gestures that tell her she matters, will help. Go on, show her what she means to you…

Shed laziness

Keep a check on your expectations and remember that you too have flaws of your own. Shed your laziness

For people who have issues with sleep, it is important to figure out the cause of the sleep problems, which might be either physical or psychological. Here are few precautions to take to ensure good sleep hygiene: 1. Avoid caffeine, alcohol and nicotine close to bedtime, as they are stimulants. 2. Exercise is good and promotes good sleep, but done at night or close to bedtime is not good, as exercise stimulates us. Bringing your body to relax and ready for sleep soon after is difficult. 3. Large meals, close to bedtime, could also disrupt sleep. Dinner should be the lightest meal of the day and should be consumed 3 to 4 hours before sleeping, so that the body has time to metabolise it. 4. Establish a regular routine so that you discipline your body and mind about sleep. Try to emotionally shut down so that your mind is not very active at that time. 5. It’s not a good idea to use your bed to watch TV, listen to the radio, or read, as you need to associate your bed with sleep and nothing else. Try to finish all the activities before you go to bed. 20 – Your happiness quotient is neutral. Both the good and the bad are in a competition. 15-19: You are dissatisfied with life, but only slightly. You need to ask yourself whether this feeling has been brought about by a recent negative event or if it is spurred by the fact that your life is heading in the right direction, but you haven’t reached there yet. No reason to worry yet…

10-14: There is no doubt, you are dissatisfied!

Take stock of the situation…maybe your expectations are simply too high or you may need to change something significant in your life. Ideally, seek help from a person you trust or may be a mental health counsellor.

5-9: You are extremely dissatisfied. You need to make serious efforts to turn your life around; you might need professional help March 2015

Just TRAVEL

A

dventure may be too heavy a word to use for solo sojourns to popular destinations, with tour guides chalking out the itinerary and all details of the planned trip, but the element of novelty, or, perhaps, the idea of being on ones own, does pack an element of romance that prods one to opt for solo trips. The prospect of flying to a new destination alone, going on solitary sightseeing jaunts, and even tucking into exotic street food or souvenir shopping on your own, may hold a lure if you like the idea of your own company. For, the idyllic setting of unwinding and getting into a retrospective mode in a new destination does have its own appeal. But what about the obvious challenges‌the safety facets of travelling alone in a completely new place? With all the brouhaha of the International Women’s Day behind us, we need to admit, albeit grudgingly, that gender equality and all things feminism does not necessarily entail safety, more so when it

comes to travelling alone. Whether it’s a trip to a new destination or a favourite place, the need for precaution can never be overemphasised. If you have a solo trip planned for the year, ponder over the little details that need to be ironed out before booking your tickets.

1A little research will go a long

way. Check online for news ws and information about the crime scene in the destination of your choice rrorist and even possibilities of terrorist ts and threats, especially for tourists women.

2 Weigh all the pros and cons when narrowing on a hotel for your stay. You could seek eek recommendations to choose ose

the one that is most secure. Don’t forget to call the hotel and speak directly to the concerned people about the safety factors before you make your bookings. Keep the hotel phone number in your purse/wallet when you go out.

3 Before embarking on your trip, leave a planned itinerary with family and friends and do establish contact regularly from the destination. 4 Try and avoid flights that land at night at the destination of your choice. Apply that rule even while going on day trips, as areas around bus/train stations tend to be deserted, with most small towns shutting early in the evening.

5 Travel only with personal credit and debit cards and do not be tempted to carry valuables. Ideally, carry the cards in your person, rather than in the handbag or purse. Carry only required cash; do not pull out wads of notes from your purse to pay for every small purchase.

6 Do not advertise your travelling status to people you meet during

the trip. And, although, it may not be advisable to befriend strangers, finding a like-minded traveller could add to the ease of your trip.

7 Plan your travel route before venturing out. Carry a book to detract strangers from approaching you during lulls in sightseeing activities. 8 Do not hesitate to make a scene if you are harassed. Remember that walking confidently and assuredly can detract unwanted attention, as appearing lost or confused can make you seem vulnerable.

9 It would help to understand the culture of the place you are visiting to avoid misunderstanding simple gestures and body language.

10

As much as possible, try to blend in with the crowd wherever your sightseeing trip takes you. Pack lightly for the day trips so that you can move quickly.

11Dress appropriately, depending on the customs of the land you are visiting. This, however, doesn’t mean wearing traditional clothes; dressing modestly should help.

12

Stay safe by using your common sense and following usual suggestions - like not walking around late at night, travelling in empty compartments in trains, knowing how to use a pay phone and not compromising on safety. A bit of street smartness will help you enjoy your holiday abroad.

Home Single woman’s guide

Needs to a beautiful home

The notion that women, generally, love the idea of dabbling in home décor, is not far from the truth, considering that most commercials of home furnishing/furniture outlets target women. From wall paints to home embellishments, advertisers are, seemingly, pandering to the whims of women. Imagine then, the fun element, if the home in question belongs solely to you… Being a single woman can have its own attractions, more so with the freedom of choice it promises. It is all about giving vent to you personal preferences - not having to consult any family member/s for his/her choice before zeroing on a colour or a sofa design can be a liberating experience. If you are a ‘single woman’ seeking ways to adorn your abode, check below for some interesting ways to make your bachelorette pad extra special.

1. Whether you are renting the apartment/flat or owning it, add to its warmth by bringing along a piece of furniture from your family home. It could be something that belonged to your grandparents or an item that has a story to tell... It will help establish that sense of being ‘at home’. 2. Spare space for a dressing table. Whatever be its size, it will act as a memory board with items that can be traced back to cherished moments, sharing space with your everyday creams and lotions. 3. Pick curtains that reflect your style. If you can’t find ready ones, don’t hesitate in getting one stitched. 4. If you like the idea of wallpaper, opt for removable ones, more so if the landlord has clauses against wall paint/ décor. 5. Create a bookshelf and make it the focal point of your home. You could add patterned paper to the shelf backings or organise books in a creative way or paint it up, to customise your bookshelf with little effort.

6. Indoor plants can alter the very façade of your room. m. Add window boxes wherever possible and enjoy the fresh appeal.. 7. Adorn your sofa with colourful throw pillows. Opt for colours that are in tune with your personality. 8. Storage space is a big concern in small accommodationss and this is where your ingenuity comes to play. Most apartmentss do not have enough space, in which case you can create storage e with rolling kitchen islands or ottomans with storage space. 9. One easy way to up the dÊcor quotient is to add a rug, be it in the living room or the bedroom. The choice of style and size could depend on your budget. Select one that blends in with the look of your room. 10. Whether you like the idea of cooking or not, equip your kitchen with a microwave and a toaster. Turn the kitchen into a happy place with fun designs on the walls and colourful crockery and cutlery

If you are not in a relationship you may meet someone new and exciting. A word of caution though: proceed slowly.

Gemini

It is time for you and your partner to work together to face problems that concerns you both. This will not only draw you closer but also appreciate each other’s strengths more than ever. There is also a strong emphasis on your career; you will develop new skills and will even take initiatives to come up with new innovative ideas.

Cancer

You need to learn how to be more patient in your personal relationships. Remember, family members have been feeling neglected as you have been focusing on your career since the beginning of this year. Try to avoid conflict at work, as there are a few colleagues who have become envious of your recent achievements and your improved financial status.

Leo

Things are looking bright in your personal relationship, but that is no reason why you should not show your partner that you care. Be patient with him/her. Your career could be at its peak, as you have achieved both success and recognition, but the same cannot be said about your finances… Although they are not looking too bad, do not neglect it.

Aquarius

Give love a chance this April and you will see it improve along with your career. Positive thinking does work, so take every opportunity that comes

Kristen Stewart April 9, 1990

Kristen Jaymes Stewart is an American actress, who became famous for her role as Bella Swan in The Twilight Saga, a role for which she won numerous Teen Choice and People’s Choice Awards. She starred in the film series from 2008–12, which grossed over $3.3 billion worldwide. Her other films include Zathura, Into The Wild, Panic Room, Adventureland, The Runaways, Snow White And The Huntsman, On The Road, Camp X-Ray, Still Alice and Equals. She was listed as the highestearning female actress in the Vanity Fair ‘Hollywood Top Earers List of 2010’ with an estimated earning of $28.5milion.

Everything is bright, even your personal relationship with your partner is going through a good phase. Try and maintain this positive spirit. April could be a month with lots of new exciting projects and contracts. But be careful with money, as there could be some unexpected expenses this month; keep some money aside as an emergency fund. Take care of your health.

Scorpio

Love is in the air for you Scorpio. You are feeling confident, but try not to be too overbearing in your relationship. Remember, it is good to talk, but it is also good to listen. Give in to your charity instinct and help out that friend in need. Look after your business contacts as this could, otherwise, influence your finances negatively.

Aries

Sagittarius

Nothing will stop you this month... If you are single, you will be attracting new interesting people into your life; but if you aren’t, you may face some stresses in your relationship, which could be worked out together with your partner. Expect praise at work for your hard work and attitude, as your professionalism will be noticed. Although money does not seem to be a problem, keep an eye on your spending, as you may tend to feel a bit frivolous this month. On the health count, avoid stress as it could lead to severe migraine. Also, keep a close eye on your blood pressure.

Capricorn

(March 21 – April 20)

Make April your month…a month to pursue your personal pleasure. You will feel stronger and your relationship with your partner will also intensify. If you are single, you might meet someone special you would like to spend some more time with. If you are a creative person, you will be pleasantly surprised by your success, which will, somehow, lead to better finances.

This April, you will feel a need for sensuality and a need to be nurtured. There will be some great career opportunities…make sure you grab them with both hands, as they will lead to better finances. Free yourself from prejudices as they are linked to future changes in your life.

Weird News Goat dressed as Elsa in ‘Frozen’

Just as you thought the furore over ‘Frozen’ has died down, a goat has decided to pay a special tribute to the film. Peppa Lass is the goat that has given Frozen fans another reason to smile. Dressed up as Elsa from the Disney film, she has shown that she can sure rock an ice blue gown and blond wig. Peppa Lass even bleats a few right notes.

Octopus crawls out of aquarium display A giant male octopus was caught on a mobile phone video scaling his glass display tank at the Seattle Aquarium and reaching several tentacles over its open top. According to aquarium officials, the octopus, named Ink, was not attempting a jailbreak, but simply learning to embrace his new home with all eight arms. Ink is one of two new giant Pacific octopuses on display at the aquarium. Found in Puget Sound, they are the world’s largest species of octopuses, weighing on average about 90 pounds (41 kg) and measuring 20 feet (6.1 meters) across. Ink is expected to be released back into the wild as part of an ongoing education and conservation program for the species, next year

From Detroit to Canada on frozen lake

U.S. Coast Guard rescued a 25-year-old American man after he tried to walk from Detroit to Canada across a frozen lake. The man was found on Lake St. Clair, which borders the United States and Canada, about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) from shore by a lookout assigned to the Coast Guard Cutter Neah Bay, a 140-foot ice-breaking tug. The man, who appeared to be carrying only personal goods, told those who rescued him that he was trying to walk to Toronto, about 200 miles (321 km) from Detroit and 175 miles (281 km) from the eastern edge of the lake.

A tribute to ‘Spock’

Fans of Star Trek’s Spock have found creative ways to pay tribute to the legendary actor. The death of actor Leonard Nimoy has inspired people to post photos on social media of marked-up five-dollar Canadian banknotes that show former Prime Minister Wilfrid Laurier transformed to resemble Spock, Nimoy’s famous ‘Star Trek’ character. For years, Canadians have been wielding pens to draw Spock’s pointy Vulcan ears, sharp eyebrows and signature bowl haircut on the fiver’s image of Laurier.

Gender roles, you said? Here’s something that will make you wonder what gender-alisation is all about… Colour Pink: Believe it or not, pink used to be a ‘boy colour’ and blue a ‘girl colour’. Pastels came into style when a 1918 retail trade publication stated: ‘Being a more decided and stronger colour, pink is more suitable for the boy, while blue, which is more delicate and dainty, is prettier for the girl.’ High on heels: High heels were originally created for men and were seen as ‘masculine’. Persian soldiers wore high-heeled shoes when riding horseback, since shooting an arrow from a saddle was easier with a heel to secure the foot in its strap. But when women began adopting the style as well, men’s shoe heels became stockier and shorter. Secretary, please: Ahem…at one time, secretaries and schoolteachers were all men. At the turn of the last century, an estimated 85 percent of clerical jobs were filled by men, earning twice the salary of their female counterparts. But as more women entered the workforce, the field began to shift. Cheerleaders: Cheerleading started out as a boys’ club, as it was seen to be too ‘masculine’ for girls. Johnny Campbell, a student, is believed to be the first cheerleader. He convinced the crowd to follow his chanting lead during an 1898 game. It wasn’t until the 1920s and 1930s that women were really included; it became female-dominated only in the 60s. All lacy: Lace used to be manly… and womanly, as long as one belonged to the upper class. It w a s acceptable for men to wear lace through the 18th centu r y, but the style died out around the 19th century.
