There is something distinctly attractive about uniformity…like rolling mountains in the horizon or date palms bordering the highways. It creates a sense of familiarity and an element of uniqueness that establishes a connect with the place. The reference here is to oman’s Arabian architecture, which is incorporated in most buildings in the country. The low-rise structures with distinct arches, mashrabiya windows and muted colours, pack a charm that is evocative of its tradition rich past and culture. And, despite the burgeoning growth in the infrastructure and modernisation, the country has retained its distinctive façade, in edifices both old and new. What is striking though, is that this uniformity hasn’t quelled creativity, especially when it comes to designing the interiors and even appending the outside with novel features that do not impinge on the basic architectural concept. That - little additions and expressions of décor ideas can make a home all the more special - is the crux of this issue, which explores ways and means of enhancing the home look. While the cover story presents interior designer Dina Al Zadjali’s take on home décor, the concept is carried through in the different segments of the issue, with focus on trends in the special pages. It is also packed with a big dose of entertainment with Farhan Akhtar taking the centre Stage. Enjoy!

1st Oman Dragon Boat Festival

Oman Air launches
flights to Goa
Good news for Indian expatriates and visitors travelling to Goa. Oman Air has launched a brand-new service between Muscat and Goa, offering four flights per week. On offer are promotional fares for travel between the two destinations, for a limited time. Following the much-hyped cheating episode during the recent ‘One Direction Tour’, and the immediate parting of ways with the band, Zayn Malik, heartthrob of millions of girls around the world, is all set to go solo ‘I want to be a normal 22-year old’, stated Zayn Malik in his defence, as he clarified to the media why he was breaking away from the successful 1D band. He justified that he wanted to be ‘able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight’. For the legion of 1D fans, that was a shocking blow, one that will take a long while to heal… But Zayn’s plans to literally change his career direction might be good news for the screaming fans. His debut solo album is expected to be released in 2016 by Syco Music. He is, of course, aware that his fans are upset with this move, despite history proving that all boy/girl bands have to endure the test of time and break away or fizzle out with time. He reportedly told an entertainment magazine, “I feel like I’ve let the fans down, but I can’t do this anymore… It is crazy and wild and a bit mad but, at the same time, I’ve never felt more in control in my life ... And I feel like I’m doing what’s right - right by myself and right by the boys, so I feel good.” Zain Javadd ‘Zayn’ Malik, English singer and songwriter, who hit the music horizon while competing in ‘The X Factor’ in 2010, needs no introduction. His life has been a magical fairy tale since then as a member of the popular boy band ‘One Direction’. Born in Bradford, West Yorkshire to British Pakistani father Yaser Malik and English mother Tricia, he has one older sister and

two younger sisters. As a teenager, he took performing arts courses and appeared in school productions. In 2010, the then 17-year-old Malik auditioned for ‘The X Factor’ with his rendition of ‘Let Me Love You’ by Mario. He was accepted into the next round but got eliminated before the final round of the competition. Fate was, of course, on his side and judges Nicole Scherzinger and Simon Cowell grouped him with fellow competitors Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson to form a new act called One Direction. The group became one of the most popular finalists of the series and they were signed to Cowell’s Syco Music; they went on to make history.
Last month changed all that… On March 25, to be exact, Malik departed from the group, expressing his desire to live a normal life. While this may not spell immediate death knell for the group, things are bound to change in the 1D quarters. Malik, in his media interview, hinted that One Direction might not stay together for much longer. Zayn is surprisingly mature for a 22year old, who has savoured success very early in life. Amongst his many quotable quotes, this one well proves it:“There comes a day when you realise turning the page is the best feeling in the world, because you realise there’s so much more to the book than the page you were stuck on”

you in’ might have raised a furore in the social media, with critics dissing it as being ‘over the top, too seductive, x-rated and crossed the line’. But, despite all the negative feedback, Haifa hit back at them on Instagram. She referred to all of them as ‘malicious’ and posted a picture of a black dot against a white background with the word ‘Malice’ as caption. She then posted a screenshot showing the number of views her video had reached at the time and commented, ‘Hello success’.

Kylie in UAE Kylie’s big UAE return, late last month, was a rushed one, writes FACES columnist Ale Al Zadjale, who attended the event. “The show kicked off with one of many set list changes with ‘Les Sex’ being replaced with one of Kylie’s biggest hits, ‘Better The Devil You Know’; despite the song change, she performed the intro song, just like always, with the same choreography and had the dancers step out in the same outfits complete with black tights to censor the costumes in favour of UAE. Kylie flew through the set list, jumping into ‘In My Eyes’, ‘Timebomb’, ‘In My Arms’ and ‘WOW’ before going for her first costume change,” reviews Ale.
Jon Stewart, who has announced his retirement from ‘The Daily Show’ later this year, has explained that there was no single moment that led him to quit…it was more a realisation that it just was not what he wanted to do anymore. He says he wants to spend more time with his family, and also that he is exhausted by the repetitiveness of skewered politics. Stewart explains, “Honestly, it was a combination of the limitations of my brain and a format that is geared towards following an increasingly redundant process, which is our political process. I was just thinking, ‘Are there other ways to skin this cat?’” He will be replaced by Trevor Noah.
Nick Cannon professes his love for Mariah Carey Mariah Carey will ‘always be the love of my life’, revealed Nick Cannon after reuniting with his ex for an Easter egg hunt with their twins. According to rumours, the ‘America›s Got Talent’ judge is showing signs that his separation isn’t as ugly as some first thought. On the Meredith Vieira Show, Cannon reportedly said, “Through this learning process, you never say never. To me one thing I know, that will always be the love of my life, always be my family and that›s never going to change.”
Sofia Vergara has ‘no desire’ for kids with ex Sofia Vergara has categorically stated that she has ‘no desire’ for kids with her ex and has vowed to leave the embryos ‘frozen indefinitely’. She was speaking out in relation to the recent allegations that she was intent on destroying frozen embryos she and her ex-fiancé Nick Loeb had created. Vergara and Loeb signed a November 2013 agreement that “no unilateral action can be taken with regard to the embryos unless both parties consent.” Vergara’s lawyer noted that his client, who split with 39-year-old Loeb last May, “never suggested that she wished to have the embryos destroyed.”

I
t is all about space, admits Interior Designer Dina Al Zadjali, as she begins to list out the virtues of open space to create a feel and ambience of comfort and warmth within the home. Her stress on open space is not surprising, as she states, categorically, that she hates walls. “I hate walls…I hate building walls,” she states, justifying that you don’t necessarily need a wall to divide space. The same could be established with a glass or any other panel than a regular concrete wall, which seems to usurp, rather diminish, the feel of open spaces in a home/office, she states.

Her reason: “When you create open space, you feel more comfortable with it... it is very easy to control things in that space.” And, although it seems like a difficult proposition in flats/apartments that are built to save space, you could easily infuse a sense of open space with some nifty ideas, suggests Dina, who calls herself a ‘Space Planner’. It could be a simple sliding door in place of the regular push/pull one, or a hidden storage area to hold things, she hints. As an interior designer, she has several aces up her sleeve to play with space and add to the ambience. The objective, for example, is not just to build a storage area, but also to ensure that it is pleasant to the eye. “Depending on the clients’ requirements, you can play a lot with design for storage in flats, apartments or villas,” she reiterates, listing out the process involved in space augmentation. “The client gives me the drawing before the structure is built and then I modify the entire space to make it more convenient,” she notes. An interior-architect, Dina, who studied Interior Design in Chelsea College for Art and Design, is equipped to do both interiors as well as architecture, like face fronts. She majored in space planning in London and has, since, demonstrated her forte in interior design and related disciplines, such as display villa design, concept and space planning, lead design concepts and turnkey projects, among others. Her first project in Oman, after returning back from London, was the Emirates Medical Centre. She practised here for a year and moved to Dubai, where

she lived for almost five years, before working for a year on The Wave, Muscat project. Following that, she moved back to Dubai and returned back about five years ago to form her company Modern Interior Design House (MIDH). Although her interior design work has been mainly concentrated in the hotel sector in Dubai, back home in Oman she is into a variety of projects, both residential and commercial. She plans to open a showroom for furniture and furnishing, alongside design, as a onestop shop for homemakers. Her objective is to bridge the looming gap between demand and supply, with most designers relying on the neighbouring market to meet their clients’ requirements.

Whether the new crop of talented designers has infused the market with modern touches or it is the consequences of the global change, Oman, in general, and Muscat, in specific, has been experiencing a wave of design and architectural changes. Affirming the same, Dina states: “People today are showing more interest in hiring the services of interior designers than before. Things are really changing here in Oman; there are so many projects coming up...” This interest is not restricted to commercial projects alone, new residential projects and even individuals seeking a change in their living space are approaching designers. Most clients opt for modern design, she notes, however, hastening to add that people are slowly moving towards classic style. “They are getting bored with the modern, as it is all about straight lines - but the beauty of designing is that you can always mix,” she points out, explaining that one can mix modern with classic, new with old/antique; old house with modern interior; or even a new extension on an old building. “Design is limitless, and that is the beauty of it,” she stresses. It all, however, depends on the client. While some seek contemporary design, most prefer to take the safe path, especially when it comes to their homes, she adds. “They don’t want to risk it with colours and fancy stuff…they want to go for mutual colours and include comfy and easy items,” she observes, listing out the importance of working around a concept to have clarity. Her idea of design is to create a spa theme. “Your home should be like a spa. It should be cosy and comfortable and you should always love to stay at home. It should be inviting…” she states. Generally speaking, however, most people are wary of approaching an interior designer owing to the cost factor. To counter this, designers like Dina request
clients to specify their budgets beforehand. “I tell the client to give me a budget so that I don’t go overboard. I always try to meet the clients’ expectations when it comes to budgeting,” she reiterates. To make things easy on the client and herself as the designer, she begins every project with a mood board that is put together along with the client, to get an overall feeling of how the space will look when done. In tandem with the changes in the interior design concept is the architecture in the country, which is fast shedding its previous uniform façade. There is a visible change, agrees Dina. “They are still keeping to the Islamic architecture, but they are adding a bit of modernism to it. Like the mashrabiya windows (a type of projecting oriel window enclosed with carved wood latticework, often lined with stained glass), which is Arabic with a modern presentation… So, yes, things are changing in a big way,” she states.
Trend check
Ask her about design trends to watch out for, and she is quick to demonstrate the futility of following trends. It defies creativity, she retorts, as she likens it to fashion. “It is like you have been a victim of fashion. I don’t believe in trends. I believe in what’s new, what’s beautiful, what’s pleasing to the eyes… It should be something unique, something avant garde – that’s what I believe in. I am not a victim of trends; I am a designer and I should be creative,” she states. Designers, she says, always introduce new things. She is one of those who is always on the lookout for new products in the market, be it technology or materials. Interior designing is a continuous education, she maintains. “It is research, it is inspiration… You have to live like a designer, eat like a designer, dress like a designer…your lifestyle has to be like a designer. You have to be very observant,” muses Dina, who boasts a creative background. Her father is a print media editor and photographer and her mother, Nadira Mahmood, is a well established abstract artist.

Technological influences
Dina is more of a technology person and declares that she loves to dabble in technology when it comes to home design/decor. From sound system to lighting, technology plays a major role in all the rooms of the house, she says, noting that technology can make things really unique. It could be in creating an element of novelty in the quintessential shower with buttons to meet the client’s requirements, or it could be a completely new setup with a glass shower in the middle of the room. “Working with technology - that’s my trend when it comes to designing,” she claims. Whether one is opting for a remote control lighting system or installing entertainment panels in the bathroom, technology is all about making homes luxurious and its members pampered. In her quest for unique facets of technological additions to interior design, she has even built glass showers in the middle of the room, which, with a press of a button, could turn foggy, providing the privacy needed.
Eco friendly
As with everything else in the world, interior design too is going the environment way with green and organic items. Although going organic can be an expensive affair, the stress is also on health issues. As Dina explains, MDF (mediumdensity fibre) boards not only bring bad energy, they also affect health, especially when it comes to the bedroom. She recommends beds with headboards, specifically pure leather headboards, as it generates positive energery and is also practical when it comes to cleaning.
l Always make sure that you have a comfortable and practical space in your living area. l Do not overload it with colours. l Always make sure that you have one theme that goes throughout your whole house. l Do not overcrowd the space with things brought from the market; it will lose value if not given appropriate space. l When it comes to furniture and accessories, make sure you have two or three pieces that stand out in your house. l Incorporate aroma candles - remember your house should always be clean and smell nice. l Add comfy cushions. l Lighting is very important. Have bright and comfortable lights – not neon. Hidden lights can add cosiness to the house. l Add a nice soft rug in the bedroom to add an element of comfort. l Opt for roller blinds instead of the velvet, heavy curtains, as they are easy to clean and wash. It will also effectively block out the sun. For energy… “I believe in energy; I believe in Feng Shui. There are so many things that can bring energy to your house…” says Dina, as she suggests the following: l At the entrance of the house have a small console and a mirror so that when someone comes in, their energy – if they have any bad energy when they came in – does not get to you; it reflects back to them in the mirror. l Plants – always have natural plants. Fake plants in the house bring bad energy. l Do not overload the house with rugs and heavy curtains. Try to make it as simple and as cosy as possible l Animal prints or animal skin are a big NO! l Sharp edges in furniture also bring bad energy. l Cactus is also a NO – not in the house. Never place cactus inside. If you want to have cactus, always put it outside, as that is better for energy. l If you have an office, place aloe vera plant, because it absorbs all the negative energy

Keep Writing… ‘Never give up your day job’, is the advise for budding writers from Richard Harrison, Director of Canford Publishing, whose recently launched book, ‘Framework: Academic Writing and Critical Thinking’, is designed to help students develop their English writing skills “Writing is unpredictable and everyday bills still have to be paid,” quips Richard Harrison, ELT author, consultant and Director of Canford Publishing, while advising wannabe writers to hold on to their day jobs. “Sometimes, a writer works hard on a course for many months and it doesn’t sell well, but, other times, a course gets written quickly and is a surprise success. This can be exciting, but lack of a regular income can also be stressful,” he maintains, pointing out the importance of remaining in full or part-time employment so as to keep in touch with the classroom and derive ideas, inspiration and motivation to write. His journey in the publishing industry was not the result of careful planning. “In fact, it has come as something of a surprise that I have arrived where I am. When I started out in English Language education in the 1970s, I had no idea that one day I’d be setting up my own publishing company in Oman,” he says, reflectively. He’d graduated from Kings College, London, in 1971, with a degree in Geography, but, as it happens to students at university, his interest in the chosen subject waned. However, his desire to teach and work overseas led him to Spain in 1973 and later to universities in Saudi Arabia, Iran, Bahrain, the UAE and Oman. “Along the way I collected qualifications in the field of English language teaching, a Diploma in Teaching English Overseas and an MA in Applied Linguistics, as I decided to make a career out of English language education,” he recalls. In 1994, he surprised family and friends by accepting a post of English as Specific Purposes Consultant in Moscow, with the British Council; it involved setting up training courses for Russian teachers. “English and especially Business English was all the rage in Russia at that post-Soviet time. It turned out to be an interesting and rewarding interlude, but after three Russian winters I knew it was time to move back to warmer climates,” he adds. It was in Oman, however, that his passion for writing found a trigger. Recalling those days, he says:“I started my writing career during my first stay in Oman in the mid-1980s. I was working at a Technical College in Al Khuwair and I found my students needed materials, which would help them with their writing difficulties. I wrote and tried out materials with my class, materials which would eventually be published by Longman as ‘Keep Writing’ – a course that continues to the

present day.” In the following years, he produced school courses for Jordan and Libya as well as many other courses for the general market, such as ‘Better Writing’ (Garnet), ‘English Please’ (Longman) and ‘Headway Academic Skills’ (OUP). Richard returned back to Oman in 2007, after a gap of nearly 20 years, to take up a position at the newly formed German University of Technology (GUtech). Soon he became the Head of the Pre-University (Foundation) Department; the university grew from just 60 students to more than 1000 and the campus shifted to its current futuristic building in Halban. He retired from GUtech in 2013, but was keen to remain back in Oman and develop his self-publishing idea. “I was not unhappy with publishers, but I was impatient. I had many ideas for books, especially for this region; however,
publishers were slow to take them up. The idea of Canford Publishing was borne from this impatience. I knew how to write books, so the publication and
titles and bring in more authors into the fold, with the next book, titled ‘Interface’ coming out in July. It is a technical English course written by two specialists in the field. Meanwhile, he is involved in teacher training activities and was recently asked to do teacher-training workshops around the country for Ministry of Education. This provided him a chance to visit parts of Oman that he’d never seen - such as the wild coast of Duqm and the rugged region of Musandam. “It was here that I learned that teachers often had to travel by boat or helicopter to get to workshops in the main towns,” he states

With support and advice from friends, former colleagues and contacts in the publishing field (Al Manahil distributors in Oman, and Mazoon – printers) he published ‘Start Writing’ in June 2014 and followed it with ‘Framework: Academic Writing and Critical Thinking’ in February this year. His company, Canford Publishing, was officially launched last month. “My job is still a hobby,” he maintains. “Of course, if I do start to make money that would be welcome and then I might start to call it a business!” He plans to develop more English language

And he obliged, signing off the ‘Farhan Live’ musical fiesta with his all-time hit, ‘Rock on’, before the curtain call. Organised by ROAR Entertainment, the evening was all about Farhan and his singing forte. He kept to his promise of keeping the fans engaged. When asked, weeks ago, about his scheduled perf ormance in Muscat, at the Qurum Amphitheatre, he’d replied, “It’s going to be an entertaining evening and we’re looking forward to engage with our fans…” It was much more than what his fans bargained for.

The multifaceted actor-singer lured the audience with his inimitable voice and indefatigable energy and kept them hooked from the word go. It was a musical twister, grabbing everyone in the wake of his songs and holding them in its strong grip for nearly two hours. His on-stage energy, reminiscent of his high-voltage film ‘Bhaag Milka Bhaag’, had members of the audience on their feet from the start, as they clapped and danced the evening away. He was well backed by his troupe of musicians and female vocalist Shannon Donald, who matched Farhan in his on-stage verve. The evening not only unravelled his talents, it also demonstrated his camaraderie with this team of musicians as he threw the spotlight on the band members. The drummers obliged and held the audience captive with their duet. Talking about the USP of Farhan Live, in an earlier interview, he’d demurred
All I wanted was to be able to do a self-funded trip to Goa once a year. Life had other trips in store,” he quips. About his ongoing tryst with music, he states: “Music is my passion. In fact, everything that I have done, whether it is directing, writing, producing or acting, I am passionate about all of them. I guess that’s the reason why I am able to do all of them without it being a task. It is important to follow your passion in life, as this is the only time you have. Live it to the fullest. Must admit though, that having a great team working with me does help keep my schedule in order.”
Explaining about his style and the band, he points out that the sound is mainly rock, with a few songs that have varied cultural influences...“Like ‘Senorita’, for e.g. that is structured like a Spanish song or ‘Havan karenge’ that has a Punjabi flavour,” he adds. Asked about the musical influences in his life, he says, “From The Beatles to Pink Floyd to RD Burman to Shankar Ehsaan Loy, the list goes on.” In between his busy band performances, he has been taking time out to shoot for his upcoming films - Dil Dhadakne Do and Wazir, but hopes to get behind the camera to direct another entertaining film soon

with a, “I don’t know what our USP is...” But he admitted that it was all about going with the flow. “We get on stage and a have great time playing music for people, and hope that the joy we are feeling will transcend being just on stage and include all in the audience,” he’d stated. With music occupying so much of his time now, it is surprising that the idea of a band didn’t come until much later in his career. “Come to think of it… when I started my career - directing Dil Chahta Hai - I never thought I would be an actor and, when I was an actor in Rock On, I never thought I would have a band and I would be doing shows.

It is mid-April and guests lounging around the swimming pool and lazing at the beach are reflective of the popularity of the property among tourists who make the most of the tourism season. Although summer is making headway and ensuring its presence is felt, more so in the noontime, the holiday mood is resplendent all around the restaurant. We embraced this siesta mood, as we readied ourselves for a culinary pampering by Chef Bryce
olive croutons, followed by a cold ‘Cucumber Mint Soup’, capped with cauliflower panna cotta. ‘Butter Poached Lobster’, the entrée that Chef Bryce custommade, especially for our lunch, was a culinary masterpiece with tender chunks of lobster and the creamy broth presenting that special relish. Explaining about this dish, which might soon find its way into the upcoming new menu, he informs us that the lobster is cooked in simmering butter and is accompanied with leek fondue, saffron, cream, orange juice, garlic chips and red chilli oil. The rich, creamy texture creates a melt-in-the-mouth dish. Perfect for a leisurely lunch. On the vegetarian counter was an artistically presented ‘Leek Wrapped Vegetable Confetti’, which is roasted peppers, olives, artichokes, mushrooms and goat cheese. And the dessert… What a ‘Sweet Surprise’! Pastry chef Amar Roy calls it ‘The Final Call’ and describes it as a perfect summer item. “The idea,” he says, “is to present a refreshing and

Carter, who joined Beach Pavilion five months ago to infuse the menu with fresh flavours and inspire foodies with his culinary masterpieces. He has been responsible for introducing a distinct Californian twist into the menu, with plans for major menu makeover, post Ramadan. “I am in the process of incorporating vibrant flavours, citrusy notes and bright and fresh touch to the menu,” states Bryce, who has been with the Ritz group for the past 12 years. Foodies can expect to tuck into an array of fresh seafood and scrumptious steaks. And, with the brunch set to restart in September, following the summer break, the menu will include an all new concept, to cater to regulars as well as tourists with refined taste buds. Our food fiesta at the Beach Pavilion was an elaborate affair, with a custom-made entrée from chef Bryce. It began with Tuna Poke (Poke is a raw salad, served as an appetiser in Hawaiian cuisine) and Cioppino Stew, the two new additions in the regular menu of the restaurant. Tuna Poke, with macadamias, avocado, fried wontons and papaya chutney, is distinctly tangy, incorporating the flavours of raw tuna, avocado and the papaya to create a confluence of taste that will stump you with its uniqueness. It was a perfect start. But the lunch, of course, began with the complimentary focaccia bread, made aromatic with olives. The next item to make it to our table was the Cioppino Stew, which could easily pass off as a scrumptious Indian seafood curry, with sautéed seafood (calamari, mussels, clams and shrimps) laid on a bed of slightly spiced tomato broth and seafood stock. For a palette that has grown on Indian food, that stew is a neat rendition of any south Indian fish curry, albeit with spices softened to suit international tastes. On the vegetarian section was Tomato Mozzarella salad with basil pesto, balsamic reduction and
natural twist…something that is not too heavy, but creamy and delicious; a relaxing dessert.” The colourful dish is made exotic with its presentation in frozen fresh coconut and placed on a flat stone with an orchid to adorn. It contains mango salsa, marinated with passion fruit, fresh coriander and lemon juice and topped with coconut parfait and mango granita, topped with fruit cubes. That was, indeed, a lunch to cherish

serves 4 portions l Sashimi grade tuna- 1kg l Avocado – 2 l Coriander – 1 bunch l Papaya – 1 l Black and white sesame seed - 1gm each l Macadamia nut - 1gm l Wonton skin – 2 l Lime – 4 l Sweet chilli sauce - 1gm l Sweet soy sauce - 1gm l Sambal (sauce typically made from a variety of chilli peppers and secondary ingredients)-1gm l Fish sauce - 1tsp l Sesame oil - 1tsp l Mirin (an essential condiment used in Japanese cuisine) - 1tsp l Olive oil - 1tsp l Salt & pepper – To taste Method: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Toast sesame seeds and macadamia nuts and set aside. Julienne wonton, fry, and set aside. Dice papaya and mix with sesame seeds and mirin. Dice avocado and put in mixing bowl. Toss it with fresh chopped coriander and limejuice. Season to taste. Dice tuna in ¼” cubes and place in mixing bowl. Add all the liquid ingredients, sesame seeds, and coriander. Season to taste. In a martini glass, place 1 large scoop of avocado and add equal portions of tuna on top of avocado. Sprinkle crushed macadamia and top with 1-tablespoon papaya. Garnish with fried wonton, fresh coriander, and lime slice. top with 1 tblsp papaya.

Cut calamari into rings. Saute garlic and chilli flakes with olive oil. Add seafood and season with salt and pepper. Deglaze with stock. Add marinara and simmer until clams and mussels have opened. Julienne leeks and sauté with garlic and butter. Add saffron and continue to sauté until leeks are tender. Deglaze with orange juice and add cream. Simmer for 15 minutes. Adjust seasoning to taste. In a separate pot, bring lobster stock to a boil and reduce by half. Lower heat and whisk in butter and cream. Adjust seasoning to taste. 5. Cut lobster tails in half and remove meat from shell. Place meat in liquid and simmer until lobster is cooked through. 6. To plate, place 1 large spoonful of leek fondue in centre of plate. 7. Pace 2 lobster halves on top of fondue. Garnish with micro greens.

oy is one of the few plant foods with all the amino acids your body needs to make protein. Otherwise only eggs and other animal foods contain all amino acids and therefore are termed as superior proteins. Soy is consumed all over the world but is a major part of Asian diet. Soybean is one of the richest sources of plant protein. It is a good source of PUFA and has a good ratio of omega-3 to omega-6. That is why it’s popular as cooking oil. It has no cholesterol and is good source of calcium and magnesium. Soybeans contain a mix of slowdigesting carbohydrates, with fibre and other starches that are good for promoting the growth of healthy bacteria in the gut. Along with this, soy contains isoflavones and phytoestrogens, which are known to reduce risk of cancer and cardiac diseases. As we all know, moderation is the key to a healthy diet. Take a look at how much of these products should
be consumed for reaping maximum benefits.
Caution while selecting soy products:
1. Always try to choose products made of whole soy instead of soy protein or soy isolates or products having short forms such as TVP and SPI, as these are processed foods and don’t contain the goodness of soy. They may also contain sugar syrups and salt. 2. Do read the expiry date of the product; if the duration is too long, more the number of preservatives added, so avoid it. Select organically grown soy products. Avoid GMO. 3. Whole soy foods contain high levels of healthy protein and fibre fibre helps to reduce bad cholesterol. Plus, soy is a much better source of protein for your heart than saturatedfat-rich animal-derived foods.

from the shelf, prepare it easily at home by simply cooking whole soybeans in water and using a cloth to strain the soymilk. Tofu can be made from full-fat soymilk by using salts or acids to coagulate the milk into curds that can be pressed into cakes. One to two servings of whole and fermented soy foods are recommended. One average serving is a half-cup of tofu or 1 cup of soymilk. Other whole soy options include varieties like tempeh, miso and natto (paste form) made of fermented cooked soybeans. They are rich in Vitamin B complex and excellent for gut, as they are easily digestible. Edamame or young green soybeans are a great source of protein. They steam in minutes and half a cup can be consumed easily in salads or stir-fries. Cancer and thyroid patients should consume these products only after consulting their physician

hile new surveys are indicative of a fall in teenage smoking, more so in developed countries like the United States where fewer new kids are lighting up, the fact that it continues to attract between 80,000 to 100,000 children worldwide to start smoking everyday is ominous, to say the least. Smoking, per se, continues to be an epidemic that needs to be stemmed at the root. Worldwide teenage smoking statistics are alarming… About one in five teen between the ages of 13 and 15 smokes worldwide. Around 50 percent of those who start smoking in adolescent years go on to smoke for 15 to 20 years, suggest evidence. Teen smokers are more likely to have panic attacks, anxiety disorders and depression. Studies have found that nearly all first time use of tobacco takes place before high school graduation. About 30 percent of teen smokers will continue smoking and die early from a smoking-related disease.
Teenage smoking: causes
According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), nearly all cases of first time tobacco use takes place before a person finishes high school. ACS has also found that almost three out of
four regular smokers in high school have already tried and failed to quit. Studies have shown that people who start smoking before the age of 21 have the hardest time quitting. Conversely, youth who do not start using tobacco by age 18 will most likely never start. While peer pressure is seen as the prime reason for indulging in smoking, many take it up only to look older or feel independent. A cross section of teens may even take up smoking to lose weight. The desire to experiment is also one of the reasons cited for teenage smoking. Teens who complain of boredom also tend to see smoking as a way to seek excitement. Often, it could be influenced by parents who smoke, and this places the onus on adults to either curb their habits or set restrictions against smoking, which, if not helping the teen to quit, will at least help in reducing the chances of becoming regular smokers, as the house is out of smoking zone. Media advertising is also seen to affect the habit.

Yes, teenage smoking is a big deal as most teens who smoke are likely to turn into adults who smoke. Find out how YOU can help your teen stop smoking NOW! 1. If you are a smoking parent, your teen could be interpreting it as an endorsement for smoking. Find ways
to quit your habit and make sure you don’t light up in the house, in the car or in front of your teen, and don’t leave cigarettes where your teen might find them. Explain how unhappy you are with your smoking, and why it’s so important to you to quit. 2. Talk to your teen about his/ her habit; remember threats and ultimatums aren’t likely to work. Find out what caused him/her to take up the habit. 3. Get your teen to share his/her concerns and apprise him/her of the consequences of smoking. 4. Talk about the cost factor (cigarettes are expensive) and all the negative effects of smoking on the looks – from yellowing teeth and bad breath to wrinkles and energy loss. 5. Put together a workable quitting plan with your teen. Put the plan on paper and encourage your teen to write down the reasons for quitting and specify a date to call it quits. 6. Encourage him/her to hang out with friends who don’t smoke, as it would become increasingly difficult otherwise to quit. 7. Explain the why’s and how’s of resisting cravings. Breathing exercises could help as also gum or cinnamon sticks to keep the mouth occupied otherwise. Anti-smoking nicotine replacement products could also help.

Now, here are some hard-hitting health issues associated with smoking: 50 percent of long-term smokers will die from tobacco. On average, smokers die 13 to 14 years earlier than non-smokers. Every cigarette smoked, cuts at least five minutes (the time taken to smoke it) of life on average. Smoking at an early age increases the risk of lung cancer. Smoking is the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death; it is a prime factor in heart disease, stroke and chronic lung disease. Smoking can cause cancer of the lungs, larynx, oesophagus, mouth, and bladder, and contributes to cancer of the cervix, pancreas, and kidneys. Teenage smokers suffer from shortness of breath almost three times as often as teens who don’t smoke, and produce phlegm more than twice as often as teens who don’t smoke Smoking hurts young people’s physical fitness in terms of both performance and endurance.

Apply a full ounce (or two tablespoons) of sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher at least 30 minutes before exposure to the sun. Wear protective clothing, such as wraparound UV-blocking sunglasses, broad-brimmed hats and tightly woven, bright-colour clothes. Tanning beds also contain a lot of UVA radiation. The bottom line is, do not get a tan; there is no such thing as a safe tan!
Plucking hairs in a precise pattern can make even more pop up in their place, according to a study. Playing with the density of hair removed altered how serious an injury the body recognised and in turn how much hair regrew. The team managed to regenerate 1,300 hairs by plucking 200, in the study using mice. Pulling every hair out led to every hair coming back, but no extra regeneration. Researchers showed that the level of inflammation under the skin was finely tuned to the scale of the damage. And through a cascade of chemical signalling and immune responses, this controlled the amount of regeneration.
Sleep apnea linked to cognitive decline
Breathing problems during sleep - such as heavy snoring and sleep apnea - may be associated with earlier decline in memory and thinking skills, says a study. The study also suggests that treating these abnormal breathing patterns with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) may delay cognitive decline. Research participants with sleep-breathing problems were diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) at an average age of 77, while participants without sleep-breathing problems were diagnosed with MCI at an average age of 90.

Divorcees ‘have more heart attacks’
Divorcees are more likely to have a heart attack than their peers who stay married, US research suggests. An analysis of 15,827 people showed women were worst affected, and barely reduced the risk if they remarried. Women who divorced once were 24 percent more likely to have had a heart attack in the study than women who were continuously married. The figure was 77 percent for those having multiple divorces. In men, there was a modest 10 percent extra risk for one divorce and 30 percent increase after multiple divorces. When it came to remarriage, the risk was only marginally reduced for women while men bounced back.
Weight and dementia
While past research has associated obesity with increased risk of dementia, a new study has suggested that obesity could actually be a protective factor against the condition. The study, said to be the largest ever to assess the link between body mass index and dementia risk, reported that people who are underweight might be at increased risk. Researchers found that, compared with adults who had a healthy BMI, those who were underweight during middle age were 34 percent more likely to be diagnosed with dementia. This increased risk remained for 15 years after adults’ underweight status was recorded.

Located on the road to Nakhal, 100-odd kilometres from the city, it is a perfect prescription for anyone seeking to savour nature without getting into the hassle of long drives, packing for the overnight with food supplies and water. An early morning start would mean an easy drive, without the regular traffic congestion, and an equally relaxing stopover at the destination before

The kilometre signpost on the road to Nakhal, at the T-junction leading to Wadi Abyadh, reads 108kms to Muscat. Add to that another 20-odd kilometres and you are at the start of the pebbled pathway, leading straight to the wadi. From Muscat, drive towards Barka, as if you are heading to the earlier roundabout, before the flyover changed the façade of Barka roads. Take the road below the flyover, with Lulu Hypermarket on your right hand. Turn left on the road leading to Rustaq and Nakhal. Drive along that road for approximately 24kms before coming across a signboard that reads Wadi Abyadh - 22kms. Turn right just after that; the signpost on the left ‘Muscat
explore OMAN 108kms’ and ‘Al Rustaq 59kms’ is your clue. Drive on this road for about 22kms, with small signs on the road taking you on the right turns. We were lucky to find a couple of good Samaritans who simply asked us to follow their car as they were headed towards the same destination; they even invited us for coffee at the end of the trail. Tagging their Lexus meant saving at least a few minutes looking for ‘Wadi Abyadh’ signboards. But that would hardly be a bother, considering that the drive itself is fascinating. The empty roads and the open plains stand starkly against the busy congested roads and highways of the capital, luring you to take time and enjoy the vistas. The road takes you to a busy market area, where you could picks supplies for the trek – water and chips or even some snacks from the coffee shops and the restaurants lining the road. From there on it’s just a few minutes away to the wadi. The tarred road ends abruptly, opening to a wide pebbled pathway, like a sea of smoothened pebbles of varying sizes and shapes. The colours – ranging from grey to stark white – add to the effect of the wadi bed. If you are lucky you might
even catch an exoticlooking bird or two in flight. The trees bordering one end of the pebble-track seem to be home to some of them. Although a salon car can manoeuvre a major part of the one-kilometre or so drive, the last few metres would demand a 4-wheel as the pebble sizes become bigger with deeper indents of tyres on the path, taking the ease out of driving, with dangers of tyres sinking right into the stony trail (We saw a pickup struggling to move the wheels out of the grove and joined in to push it out of the pebble grid). If trekking isn’t an issue, park your car at some point on the road and walk the short distance to the beckoning water flow. Little pools of water and the flowing water along the foot of the hills surrounding the wadi add that ‘fresh’ element and you would be lured to kick off your footwear and trudge on the water trail. The trek on the river bed, with softened pebbles cushioning the soles of your feet, is just what you would need to unwind after a long week at the office. The only sour note in all this is the garbage strewn in the water and even
some spots along the pebble-path - the plastic bags, used Styrofoam plates and food wrappers. The pristine feel of the place is broken by the unsightly bits of garbage and you wish you could get down to a cleanup spree… The beauty of the wadi is well complemented by the hospitality of locals who picnic at the place. While coffee was offered at the beginning of the off-road drive, it was an invite to share in the lunch that culminated it.

Sleeping ‘Beauty’ The truth behind the clichéd beauty sleep…
Does the concept of ‘beauty sleep’ really work? Apparently, yes. According to research undertaken by the Skin Study Centre at University Hospitals in Ohio, lack of sleep can accelerate skin ageing. They studied the skin tones of women in the age group of 30 – 49 who had poor quality sleep and compared it with 30 who had rested well; they found that those with less rest had more fine lines, uneven pigmentation and less elastic skin, alongside eye bags and shadows! Although sleep isn’t a single formula that can enhance looks, its deprivation can act as a big dampener. A quick online search throws up a host of truths associated with lack of sleep. The body, apparently, goes into repair mode and regenerates skin, blood and brain cells as well as muscles. However, what needs to be understood is that stress is the culprit behind the changes wrought by sleep deprivation. Of course, like everything else in life, there are certain cheat codes that will help you regain your beauty while you sleep away your stress. Here’s how… Face care routine: Never go to sleep without washing off your makeup. It will save you from the ordeal of waking up with makeup patches all around your eyes. Besides, not taking off the makeup before sleep can cause clogging of the pores, which, in turn, can lead to breakouts. Food ‘no’s: Consuming salty foods or having an alcoholic beverage or two can make you dehydrated, which could lead to puffy eyes. Try sleeping with an extra pillow (unless otherwise prescribed by your doctor), as lying flat is known to make the fluid gather around your eyes. Humidifier: There is no denying the role played by water consumption on your skin, but how to do you ensure that during the eight hours or so of sleep in the night? By using a humidifier…especially during winter when the skin tends to become drier. Moisturise routine: Before hitting the bed, apply anti-ageing night cream that contains hyaluronic acid (a substance that is naturally present in the human body) for a fresh look in the morning. Apply a lip balm, moisturise your eyelashes with a lash conditioner and a beauty cream or serum to help the repair cycle of skin during night. Hair do: Ideally, wear your hair up, but not in one of those tight buns, as it can cause hair breakage. The idea should be to keep your hair out of your face while you’re sleeping, to keep its natural oils from working on your complexion. Satin or silk pillowcase: Sleeping on a satin or silk pillowcase will ensure that you do not wake up in the morning with a bird’s nest for hair. Besides, the texture of the fabric is known to soften wrinkles and fine lines as it causes less friction between skin and pillowcase.

Designed by Creative Director, Guillermo Mariotto, who drew inspiration from the theme of Expo Milano 2015, ‘Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life’, his collection of ‘Couture a la Carte’ amalgamated the finest Italian tailoring with culinary artistry. Mariotto launched the versatile ‘Le Joli Panier’ line with this collection of tulle, organza and silk fabrics in palettes new to the Maison from menthol, currants, yellow olive oil and cinnamon to caramel, black liquorice, strawberry pink and white glacé cream. ‘Couture a la Carte’ is an elegant collection of sartorial Italian tailoring, flawlessly combining modern and innovative designs with centuries-old foundations. Characterising the unmistakable and refined Gattinoni style, the collection featured an anthology of beautiful evening gowns. As a homage to Maranello, the historical automobile manufacturing town in Italy, ‘Tribute to Ferrari’ opened the show. Complete with a long train of chiffon dubbed in organza, and a bustier embroidered with Bilics slabs, the one-of-a-kind gown was designed in appreciation of Alfardan Motors’ support of the Gattinoni show in Oman. Also gracing the runway was a symphony of ‘Le Joli Panier’ silhouettes, from high waist trousers and silkscreen printed gowns to micro panel skirts boasting a lateral panier.

It’s May! This means summer for most of us, whether you are like me (and it’s determined by the end of the semester), or simply because the heat is about to hit us, hard. Fashion-wise, summer is my favourite time of the year because it means bright colours, shorts and relaxation. For this column I want to focus on brightness for obvious reasons, the lighter your wardrobe colour, the more suitable it is for the Omani sun. But, if I had to give out a fashion tip, it would be to tell you all to pull out the neons! The United Nations initiated International Day of Families was conceptualised, according to the UN website, to provide an opportunity to promote awareness of issues relating to families and to increase knowledge of the social, economic and demographic processes affecting families. That family, the basic unit of the society, is important, cannot be overemphasised. It is the crux of all development, both positive and negative. But, how much time do we, as members of the family, devote make our families stronger? The objective here is not to create a serious platform to provoke introspection or cajole every member of the family to shake off the ennui and analyse the situation. Rather, it is about presenting a fun alternative to work together as a family on a little home project. While relationship gurus will tell you to indulge in some quality time and follow the established tenet of ‘The family that eats together, stays together’, we take off on another tangent to observe the International Day of Families this year. We at FACES want to observe the dedicated family day by helping you create a family tree; yes, your very own Family Tree… 1. To begin the project, go on a family treasure hunt drive. Look into your photo albums and family files to locate all the material that you have on your family. You could enlist the help of other members in the family and/or even request relatives to share any family documents they may have. Tuscany in Italy may be a summer destination, but May is ideally the time to visit, as the place is less busy and the weather is perfect. Besides, the place hosts a series of festivals, the most interesting being the Festa del Grillo in Cascine Park, where vendors sell live crickets in decorated cages, before they are all released back into the grass. There are several crossbow festivals and competitions, but the most spectacular is the one where competing teams race up the mountain carrying 9m-high wooden candles.
Peru in May…the Inca Trail, to be specific. With the rainy season ending on a cool note, the valleys are green and vibrant and inviting. And if you are one of those tourists, that tend to avoid crowded destinations, May is the time to hike up the trail, as the big crowds don’t arrive here until June - it might be easier to get the requisite permissions. As per the regulations, a maximum of 500 people are allowed per day on the trail. Moderate fitness is good enough to trek along the guided walk of about 42kms in four days.
Come May and Prague in Czech Republic will turn into a garden city with colourful and beautiful blooms of magnolia. Add to that the Prague Spring Music Festival for three weeks of symphony, opera and chamber concerts. There is more on the food and music section with festivals providing a break from all things mundane.

First things first…clear out the clutter. The biggest space killer is clutter; it can make the room look and feel cramped. While one way to go about it is to throw things that aren’t essential or do not really add to the ambience, you could also find ways to organise them by installing storage cabinets that are behind doors or hidden under the table skirts or placed on shelves. One easy way to declutter is to separate the items based on their usage in the past one year. Keeping shelves looking half empty is also known to add to the space and create a more airy look.
Rearrange
Follow the declutter task with rearranging of furniture and accessories to create more open space. When you move furniture out and away from walkways in the room, you will not only

One thumb of rule to follow while using colour is to coordinate the wall and furniture colours. Contrasting colours have a way of breaking up the space. Remember furniture items will seem less interrupting and blend more with the space if they match the wall colour. Try and link adjacent spaces with similar colour; complementing it with the floor colour will also improve the appearance. Use smaller prints or plain colour fabrics and rugs for a single, unified effect and visually expand the room.

An amalgamation of a variety of art traditions, the paintings on display presented creative concepts on different mediums by noted and emerging artists. ‘Into the Light’ documentary
‘Into the Light’ documentary, which was filmed in Oman with the support of the Ministry of Tourism, is set to be released at VOX Cinema in May. The documentary was screened at a private event last month in the presence of climbing Legend Stefan Glowacz. The Red Bull Athlete made a special appearance at the advanced screening, which was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Tourism and local media members. The challenging route inside Oman’s Majlis Al Jinn set a milestone, as it had never been attempted before and counts as the world’s longest roof climb with 13 pitches. US sport climbing icon and climber of some of the toughest routes on the planet, Chris Sharma, was also part of the challenging Majlis Al Jinn climb.

Shell Super Mileage Challenge 2015
Shell Super Mileage Challenge 2015 concluded on March 28th with the winning team showcasing an impressive mileage. The RQ team of Qasim bin Mohammed bin Said Al- Farsi and Rami Jamal Ahmed Ismail won the grand prize of Shell Fuel Cards for 2500 litres of Shell Super petrol each after achieving 19.2kmpl in a 2 litre car. The event was intended to assess the teams’ driving skills, with an emphasis on safe and fuelefficient driving. The 100km, two-stage challenge, extended from North Azaiba Shell Service Station to Oman Dive Centre near Qantab and back. The route had been selected to mirror everyday city-driving conditions – and to demonstrate how simple changes to driving habits, along with the right fuel, can help to reduce fuel consumption and manage motoring costs.
Whispers of Serenity Clinic Open Day
Whispers of Serenity Clinic organised an open day to inform people about the services of the Clinic and the various initiatives started by the Clinic. There were also educational talks from the Clinic psychologists on counselling, hypnotherapy, tips for a good married life and self-esteem. There was also a separate section for the ‘Not Alone’ initiative started by the clinic for the purpose of awareness about mental health. On the sidelines of the initiative, the Clinic organised a ‘Not Alone Art’ competition for artists to express ideas about mental health through creative forms like digital art, performance, textiles and still life. Three winning entries in each category are scheduled to be on display at the Stal Gallery on May 14, 15 and 16. Serenity is also in the process of setting up a Child Abuse Hotline.

ESO’s whale tracking initiative
The Environment Society of Oman (ESO) has successfully completed tagging three Arabian Sea Humpback Whales as part of the second phase of its satellitetracking project along the coast of Dhofar. This two-year project, funded by the Renaissance Group was launched in 2014 to study the habitats that are important to Arabian Sea Humpback Whales. Identifying feeding grounds and breeding areas as well as exploring the journeys, the population take builds on the Society’s 2011-13 conservation research project. Also funded by the Renaissance Group, the project has created an invaluable body of knowledge about a unique species that is iconic to the Arabian Peninsula.

Weird News Boyfriend stabbed for eating salsa
50-year-old Phyllis Jefferson allegedly stabbed her boyfriend in the groin, with a pen, for eating all the salsa in their house. Jefferson’s boyfriend, Ronnie D. Bucker, 61, told police in Akron, Ohio, that he and the accused were arguing about the salsa consumption when she allegedly stabbed him with the pen. The suspect then walked over to the TV and threatened to knock it on the floor. When Buckner grabbed the TV, Jefferson allegedly walked to the kitchen to grab a knife.

Plastic surgery ahead of robbery spree
A robber in South Korea used plastic surgery as a weapon to evade the police. According to police in South Korea, the suspect, who had been jailed for robbery in 2005, underwent surgery to alter the structure of his jaw and also procedures to stretch his limbs to gain height, before embarking on a nine-month robbery spree, beginning last April that netted cash and goods worth more than $479,000. The 35-year-old-man was arrested late last month for 87 cases of robbery across the country.

Michelinstarred restaurant makes diners pay up-front
Diners in Shoreditch’s exclusive Clove Club will require diners to pay up-front from June, to reduce the number of cancellations. This up-market London restaurant will ask customers to pay up-front. Diners will be offered a choice of two tasting menus costing either £65 or £95, which must be paid for in advance. Drinks and extras can be settled on the day. Head chef Isaac McHale, who was awarded a Michelin star last year, says the cost of cancellations can be damaging for the business. The Clove Club will use a ticketing system called Tock.
