s another school year begins, we see connections being formed all around us. Freshmen are making new friends; sports teams are coming together to function as one unit; parents are forging forward to help by joining booster organizations for the betterment of the school. When this happens, the most amazing thing occurs – we put ourselves aside to connect with others. This issue of Panther Tracks is full of connections. A major connection that included our entire community – administration, faculty, staff, students, parents, alumni and friends – occurred in August when Paul VI Catholic High School was recognized as a Catholic Education Honor Roll School by the Cardinal Newman Society. This honor is not bestowed on every school that applies, but only those schools distinguishing themselves in the areas of Catholic identity and academic excellence. I know this is not something we do alone in the walls of our school. This is a connection that embraces the entire Paul VI community. Along with new members of our faculty, we welcome two administrators, Fr. Stephen Schultz and Mrs. Elba Campagna (her connection is evident as the mother of an alumnus and three current students). Use of the FORMED program (Thank you to the Diocese of Arlington for funding part of this program!) and our “hurricane rosaries” serve as a connection with our spirituality. It seems that we are always connecting with people: high school friends who have taken the same career paths; summer learning opportunities through language department trips; and the many alumni who return to PVI, both in the classroom and on the fields. Fast fact – in the building 21 alumni + 51 parents = 52% of the faculty and staff have a direct family connection!

The Annual Report, included in this issue, allows us to publicly acknowledge the generous donors who support us and whose giving to PVI’s many programs allows us to do what we do. What we do every year and what we do in future years is all because our community supports us with their gifts, time, talents and prayers. You are connected to the lives of all our students, and I am grateful more than words can say. We are connected by the glue that is Paul VI Catholic High School. May the bond never break.

Paul VI Named to the Catholic Education Honor Roll

P

aul VI Catholic High School was recently recognized as a Catholic Education Honor Roll School. The national Honor Roll program is directed by the Cardinal Newman Society and has recognized over 300 high-performing Catholic high schools nationwide since the program’s inception in 2004.

Paul VI engaged in a thorough internal and external review of its comprehensive program offerings before being awarded this status. It has received specific recognition for its strong integration of Catholic identity throughout its efforts, including the integrity of its mission, and the strength of its community and rich spiritual life.

“It is a great affirmation for Paul VI to be recognized by the Catholic Education Honor Roll,” remarked Ginny Colwell, Head of School.

The Honor Roll also recognized PVI’s efforts at the integral formation of the minds, bodies, and spirits of its students as well as its comprehensive academic program – a program which seeks to instill a Christian vision of the world and human wisdom and culture.

“This is not something we do alone in the walls of our school. It takes our entire community – administration, faculty, staff, students, parents, alumni and friends – working together to assure that our Catholic identity is ingrained in all we do to prepare our students to lead in society and, more importantly, in our faith.”

Paul VI Welcomes New Chaplain

At age 29, he decided to pursue the priesthood. He attended St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Philadelphia.

Father Stephen Schultz

P

aul VI is happy to welcome Father Stephen Schultz as our new Chaplain.

“I am so thrilled to be here,” shares Father Schultz. “The teen years are the most important. These years should be the time to claim one’s faith for adulthood. Working with youth is some of the most important work the Church does.”

Father Schultz attended Mount Vernon High School in Alexandria, where he was involved in band, choir and theatre. He went on to George Mason University, where he majored in Music Education with a focus on Orchestral Percussion. In addition to singing and conducting, he played a number of musical instruments including trumpet and piano. After college, Father Schultz had a successful career as a businessman and entrepreneur in the computer and internet industry and achieved a good level of financial success.

Fun Facts About Father Schultz: • •

“The Honor Roll is a helpful tool for families and benefactors in recognizing the quality of a Catholic high school,” said Patrick J. Reilly, president of The Cardinal Newman Society. “It is external validation that a school is both focused and successful in meeting the high calling of Catholic schools to serve the well-being and salvation of students and to serve the common good.”

He has an identical twin brother named John who lives in Vienna. One of Father Schultz’s best friends is Father Kelly (PVI’s last chaplain) and he was the priest who vested Father Kelly at his ordination. 2

PANTHER TR ACK S Fall 2017

“I was content, but I realized I wasn’t really happy,” he reflects. “I knew that there was more.”

After being ordained a priest in 2009, Father Schultz was assigned to St. Timothy Parish in Chantilly. One of his roles at the time was youth ministry. “When we first started the youth group, not many people showed up. But God provided and we were able to hire two fabulous youth ministers. Every week got a little bit better as word spread and the group really built up during my time there.” Father Schultz is now excited to begin his time as Paul VI’s Chaplain. “In this Diocese, it is a blessing that each school is able to have their own chaplain. We are able to focus on the heart of the place and people of the school. I am thrilled to be a spiritual father and priest, not only for the students, but for the faculty and staff and families too.” Father has hit the ground running, meeting with school leadership, teachers, students and parents, attending athletic events, and working with Joyce Krolicki and Mary Chris Beardsley in Campus Ministry to plan for the year. “I want to help instill in PVI students a sense of who they are as God’s sons and daughters. It is so important to know who we are – to know our identity in Christ.” Father Schultz is very passionate about encouraging PVI students on their individual paths to holiness. “We can be just as holy as God made us to be.”

Caring for the Environment Starts at Home

T

he more students are involved, the better off the environmental situation can become,” shares junior Emma Hitchcock.

Emma recently started an Environmental Impact Club at PVI and will serve as president. “You don’t have to be the biggest tree“I could not have made a better hugger in the world to enjoy learning about the choice in high schools. I love everything about PVI. The classes environment and your impact on it,” are amazing. Teachers are happy she reflects.

to be teaching and students are happy to be learning. I went on tours of other schools, but it felt different here. There is a warmth here, an amazing sense of family.” – Emma Hitchcock ‘19

Emma first became interested in environmental topics through her 8th grade science project, in which she studied different types of vehicle fuels.

She reached out to a lead environmental and building technology scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, who lent her a combustion analyzer. Using a fish tank, tin foil cover, pyrex dish, and gauze as a clean burner, she tested the carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide emissions of regular, premium and diesel fuels. In other projects she has studied the effects of different types of roofing.

With plans for PVI’s new campus underway, Emma was interested in learning more, especially as it related to the environment. “I was curious about the building standards and environmental impacts of the new campus. I mentioned it to my dad and he suggested I email Mrs. Colwell. She was happy to receive my email and invited me to get in touch with Mr. Doug Gehley, the VMDO architect for the project,” Emma shares. “Meeting with Mr. Gehley was really interesting and so fun! I was happy to learn that VMDO always builds to LEED standards. The building will have a lot more windows and more natural light, which is great. Natural light has been linked to better grades.” “I am also excited about things that could happen in the future that could have a positive impact on the environment, such as the possibility for future solar panels or a garden on campus. With the space, there will be more opportunities to have classes outside,” Emma adds.

Fast Facts About PVI’s New Campus

Branching Out

Let There Be Light

This summer, VMDO began clearing and grading the land at Paul VI’s new campus. There are several areas onsite where trees will remain.

• The entire school will be lit with LED features. LED bulbs have a lower energy consumption and will not have to be replaced as often. • With an EUI (Energy Use Intensity) number of 40.3 for the academic and athletic buildings combined, the energy usage of PVI’s new campus will be 44% below the national average, or almost twice as efficient.

The trees that were removed were divided into three main categories: • The medium trees were chipped onsite and sent to a paper mill in Luke, Maryland.

• The lighting intensity is .32 watts per square foot, which is 64% below code requirements.

• Branches from larger trees were made into mulch and sent to local residential mulch distributors.

Sticks and Stones:

• Larger trees were taken to a saw mill in Winchester, Virginia, to make lumber.

• The boulders that are found on site will either be crushed to use as fill onsite or used in landscaping. • A wood chip trail around the campus perimeter can be used by the Cross Country team or other runners/walkers.

4

Emma plans to pursue a career in the science field, possibly in petroleum engineering or bioengineering. “My grandfather was an engineer. I looked up to him and it would be neat to follow in his footsteps.”

I eventually decided that I couldn’t dedicate 100% to both jobs so I decided to take a year off from the corporate world and see if I could really build my business.” Kelsey notes the preparation she received at Paul VI for becoming an entrepreneur. “Without all the Homecoming dances, I wouldn’t have had friends and canvasses to practice on,” Kelsey jokes. “But in seriousness, PVI instilled accountability and pride in myself. I’m not only performing services for people on the most important day of their lives, I’m selling myself to them in addition to my work. Reputation is huge in this industry and I learned how important that is at Paul VI.” “I love working with PVI alumnae as brides and bridesmaids. Doing someone’s hair and makeup is such a great way to reconnect, whether it’s for a night out, prom or wedding. The PVI community is so close-knit and word of mouth is a major way we do business. Referrals in this community are solid.” Kelsey loves working with Tressa and Amanda on the same weddings. “Not only do we have a personal history and love seeing each other succeed, we have the same drive and dedication to our passions.” “I make people look and feel their best on what is arguably one of the most important days of their lives. It’s priceless.”

CAKE:  Tressa Wiles ‘06 After graduating Paul VI in June 2006, Tressa started culinary school in July and began working at fine dining restaurant 2941. Over the course of three years, she worked her way up to Pastry Sous Chef. She later moved to New York City and worked at Eleven Madison Park, which was recently voted the #1 restaurant in the world. Tressa next moved to Sydney, Australia, where she worked as a pastry chef. When she moved back to Northern Virginia she took her current position as Pastry Chef for Bayou Bakery and Lil’ B Coffee and Eatery. In 2016, Tressa was nominated for the Restaurant Association Metro Washington “Pastry Chef of the Year.” She currently juggles being the pastry chef for two restaurants and running her own wedding cake business, CAKE. “I have worked really hard in restaurants since I was 16, most of the time holding down two jobs, in addition to the sixteen hour days that being a pastry cook brings. This work ethic has helped drive me and made me a self-motivator. I have also always worked with the most skilled chefs in the country, who pushed me every day to be the best chef I can be.”

ALUMN I CO N N EC TIO NS

“In addition to my self-motivation and talented co-chefs, I have my family, my mom and dad, and siblings Matt ‘00, Adam ‘08, Peter ‘10, Virginia ‘12, Paul ‘15, and my longtime boyfriend Tim Voth ‘06, who support me every day!” “Paul VI has a big network to help us and our businesses. I 100% believe PVI connections have helped me in my career – not only because of the support from my friends, but the PVI contacts who have supported me in my business over the years by ordering lots and lots of cake!” “Working with fellow alumni gives me a sense of reassurance that I can trust my clients and vendors who reach out to me. We have all come from the same place and grew up together, so I know their overall character.” Tressa is grateful for the influence Paul VI has had on her life. “I learned more patience and kindness at PVI that has carried me through this journey. I learned more about myself and my relationship with God and different ways of communicating with Him. All in all, these things have been major influences in my life.” “I literally love my job. I never wake up in the morning and dread going to work, never dread working with a client on a cake tasting. I never dread a delivery, even though driving through D.C. with a five-tier cake and horrifying potholes can be very stressful!”

Plan to be Tied: Amanda Walker ‘06 Amanda has her own wedding planning business, Plan to be Tied. “When I was a junior at PVI, I took Marriage and Family Living and we had to plan our own wedding. I had so much fun researching and planning that I went home and told my mom I wanted to be a wedding planner. She said, ‘No, you don’t want to deal with those Bridezillas blaming you for everything going wrong.’ So I just brushed it off and moved on,” shares Amanda.

“I went to the University of Alabama for a career in broadcast news but quickly realized I didn’t like the news atmosphere. When I was a senior in college I took a wedding planning class and said the exact same thing to my mom. I was in the wrong field, but wasn’t going to stick around for a couple more years for another major.” “I began working in radio and planned to continue working for the same company in DC but they went bankrupt. I started working in restaurants and realized that in every job I had events were my favorite.” “I tried to get event planning jobs and kept striking out. I loved everything about weddings and started doing online certifications to learn more. In 2014, a friend asked me to plan her wedding “I learned more patience and I did it for free for the experience. I was and kindness at PVI that approached by a caterer who I had worked with in has carried me through the restaurant business about being a planner on this journey.” their staff. I said I would – Tressa Wiles ‘06 love to and wanted my own company name to take credit for my work. They started recommending me and I got my first wedding by someone who wasn’t a friend.” “It was exciting to finally be doing something I loved! I’ve since filed for my LLC, started paying for advertising, and am booking weddings for the end of 2018.” “Since the beginning I have recommended Tressa for cakes and Kelsey for hair and makeup. When I recommend a vendor to a bride that is me saying, ‘I trust this person to do the job.’ I know they will always deliver and make sure the couple is happy. I also have hired two assistants who went to PVI, Victoria Schulz ‘06 and Lisa Meyers ‘07.” “It’s really awesome to be able to say you own your own business. I’m still a small operation, but I’ve made amazing growth in such a short time. I’m motivated by the opportunity to do what I love my own way. I’ve never worked for a wedding planner so I decide how I want to do things, instead of doing what someone has told me. My daughter Lilly will be able to see what I have built and I hope it inspires her to do whatever she can dream up.” “I hope that what I’ve been able to accomplish gives hope to those who feel like they never ‘get the job.’ It was really hard for me to deal with the rejection of not getting jobs I interviewed for. I now feel like not getting those jobs was all God’s grand plan for me to venture out on my own.”

rowing up, Billy Long ‘10 played baseball in West Springfield Little League and later during high school at Paul VI.

And he hasn’t retired his glove yet. In 2013, Billy started his own team, the Lake Monsters, in the DC Men’s Senior Baseball League. For the past five years, he has coached and played on his team, while getting to play baseball with many of his former PVI teammates.

“When I first started playing in this league, I was put on a random team that lost every single game. I am a competitive person, and I wanted to win while having more fun, so I decided to start my own team. I was able to reach out and fill it mostly with PVI alumni that I had played baseball with in high school. Throughout the five years since I started the team, more than twenty different PVI alumni have played at some point!” Billy values being able to stay in touch with so many of his former PVI teammates through baseball. He has also made new connections with guys who played at PVI either before or after his own tenure. “Many of us were great friends in high school, so it’s awesome to see each other a few times a week for games during the summer. It’s kept up friendships and even helped with networking in our respective jobs. Some alumni have played all five seasons while some just one or two years. We’ve had up to eight former PVI players on the team in a single season so it’s been a big success,” Billy shares. “This past year, we won the league championship for the first time. We went 13-3, finished first in the league and swept through the playoffs. The championship was a best two out of three series. We won the first game 8-2 and with the second game tied 3-3 in the last inning, Colin May ‘11 hit a walk-off two run homerun to win it all!” A high concentration of talent makes up the team. Some guys just played in high school while others played Division 1 college ball. Some players are still gunning for a career in professional baseball. For instance, Robbie Kidd ‘11 left the team this past summer after being signed by a minor league team in New York. PVI connections run deep for Billy. His girlfriend Jessica Sutherlin teaches 10th and 11th grade History at PVI and his sister Lauren Long Niehoff ‘08 was recently hired as the head Dance Team coach. Billy treasures his time on the diamond with his friends and teammates. He has also recently started a year-round men’s softball team that plays concurrently with the baseball team for 16

guys who decided to hang up their baseball cleats but still play for fun with alumni. “PVI has always had a great baseball program and that tradition of excellence has transitioned to our team. It has been great having former PVI guys playing together after high school. It’s sad to see some guys move away from the area and others retire from playing, but I hope we can connect with some younger guys next year and can keep the PVI tradition going.” “This is something I really take pride in and look forward to each summer. Winning the championship this year really solidifies everything we have been working toward for so long. This team has been a great way to keep up and grow our PVI connections, while at the same time doing what we love.” If any former PVI Baseball players or other alumni are interested in joining the competitive baseball team or want to take it a bit slower on the softball field, please contact Billy Long at blong275@gmail.com.

“Playing baseball for the Lake Monsters has been one of the best experiences of my career. It is just like playing ball in high school except my parents never show up to the games and my jersey is a cotton t-shirt.” – Colin May ‘11

Prescription for a Lasting Friendship Anastasie Dunn-Pirio ‘02 and Kara Segna ‘02

P

ursuing a career in the medical field was a long journey for classmates and best friends Kara Segna ‘02 and Anastasie Dunn-Pirio ‘02. Their drive, perseverance, and support from family and friends – especially each other – helped them both achieve their goal of becoming doctors.

Kara and Anastasie became close friends early freshman year. “We met in the McDonald’s next to PVI after school. I had heard about Kara because she thought my name was ‘Anastasia,’ not ‘Anastasie,’ and she corrected those who called me by my actual name. This led to a lot of confusion, but we ended up becoming life-long friends never-the-less,” shares Anastasie. “We were best friends at PVI,” Kara says. “Our advisories were across the hall from each other. We were relatively inseparable throughout high school and have maintained constant contact through college and beyond. Medical school and residency was really hard work and it was so wonderful to have my best friend supporting me. Her support made me feel empowered to accomplish whatever I set my mind to do.” Anastasie wanted to pursue medicine because she loved science, especially biology and physiology. “I felt the best way I could harness my interests for the greater good was to treat patients,” she shares. After graduating PVI, Anastasie attended Marymount University for two years before transferring to The George Washington University, where she earned a B.S. in Biology. She went on to complete a Master’s in Physiology and Biophysics at Georgetown, followed by medical school at the University of Virginia. After PVI, Kara also took the pre-med route. She attended Christopher Newport University followed by medical school at Eastern Virginia Medical School and residency in anesthesiology at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. Throughout their medical training, these best friends were there for each other. “Having the emotional and physical support that you can only get from a fellow friend running the same rat-race as you is vital. Having people rooting for you along the way has been invaluable,” Kara shares. “We continue to support each other to this day.”

18

PANTHER TR ACK S Fall 2017

Anastasie echoes this sentiment, “My enduring friendships with Kara and Jennie (Ocasio) Guisti (also ‘02) have really helped me. They were both there for me when I had a loss in my family. Also, training in medicine can be very intense. It is wonderful to have such good friends to get together with and take your mind off work and studying.” Not only are they now practicing physicians, both Anastasie and Kara are doing cutting edge research in their respective fields.

“I felt the best way I could harness my interests for the greater good was to treat patients.” – Anastasie Dunn-Pirio ‘02

Anastasie is currently a Neurology Fellow at Duke University. She completed a Neurology residency at Duke and went on to do a two-year fellowship in Neuro-Oncology. She is currently undertaking one additional year of training in Neuroimmunology.

One of Anastasie’s main interests is cancer immunotherapy. “Immunotherapy is different than chemotherapy – it involves treatment that boosts a person’s own immune system to fight their cancer. I especially enjoy enrolling patients into immunotherapy clinical trials for primary brain tumors, such as glioblastoma,” she explains. These trials have already produced exciting and promising results. “So far, we have seen some great success with a study that involves injecting modified poliovirus into a person’s brain tumor, which stimulates the immune system to attack the glioblastoma,” Anastasie explains.

CLASS M AT E C ON NE C TIO NS

Kara is currently an Assistant Professor and Anesthesiologist at Johns Hopkins. She also serves as the Medical Director for Public Relations for the Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Division. Next year she will become the Director of Regional Anesthesia for Howard County Hospital. “Initially, I pursued medicine because it sounded exciting – it was a long-reach goal that was difficult to achieve and I knew attaining it would give me great personal satisfaction,” Kara shares. “It was a pursuit I renewed with each step as I progressed from pre-med college student to medical student to resident to fellow and finally an attending.” Each step of the way sparked new interests and passions for Kara. “In medical school, I liked the idea of developing a greater understanding of how the human body functions and being able to respond to everything from respiratory infections to burns to cancer. In residency, I wanted to become an airway and critical care expert. During my fellowship, I developed an acute interest in pain management and how to take someone who is a 10/10 in pain and bring them to a 0/10 without using narcotics.” Kara currently specializes in acute pain and performs regional anesthetic nerve blocks so patients can have a safer and more effective anesthetic for surgery and post-surgery.

Now treating patients and doing cancer research at one of world’s most prestigious medical institutions, Anastasie wants current students to know that it’s never too late to recover from a rough transition to high school. “I did not start out high school as a strong student. In the beginning, I struggled with disorganization and trouble focusing. I recall how embarrassed I was when my mom came into school to clean out my locker every semester because I routinely lost homework assignments,” she remembers.

“I continue to learn and grow and pursue medicine because I feel like when I go to

work I will make “I hit bottom when I earned a D in Biology during my sophomore a difference in year. However, during summer school, I had an someone‘s life.” incredible teacher who reminded me that Biology – Kara Segna ‘02 was really interesting and who gave me the confidence to see that I could be good at it. Armed with confidence and a strong support network of friends and family, I began turning my grades around and during my senior year, had nearly straight A’s. It is never too late to turn things around.”

Like Anastasie, Kara is working on research that will be of great benefit to patients in the future. “I am working with a top vascular surgeon who performs first rib resections for thoracic outlet syndrome. We are implementing a multimodal pain management system which will convert the inpatient procedure to an outpatient one, while decreasing the development of lifelong chronic pain and opioid use. Decreasing opioid use is so important during this era of gross abuse, addiction, and accidental death.” In their careers, both women are motivated by being able to make a positive difference in their patient’s lives. “I continue to learn and grow and pursue medicine because I feel like when I go to work I will make a difference in someone’s life. I strive to bring confidence and comfort to my patients, who if they are seeing me are possibly meeting me at one of the worst times of their life,” reflects Kara. ANNUAL REPORT 2016-2017 PA U L V I C AT H O L I C H I G H S C H O O L

T

hroughout the following annual report, you will catch a glimpse of the year in review – highlights from the 2016-2017 academic year. Behind each of those milestones is the support of a

community of alumni, parents, faculty, and friends,

and a history that makes the future exciting. The Annual Fund and directed gifts efforts had one of its strongest years, with over $370,000 raised to continue the mission of Paul VI Catholic High School. Overall alumni giving increased and PVI’s first graduating class, the Class of 1986, showed that the Paul VI Catholic High School experience stands the test of time with the highest alumni participation. Our parent community – both alumni and current – carried us forward, and our faculty and friends showed their vote of confidence. We are truly grateful. The accomplishments during the year and commitment of our community paint part of the picture that define Paul VI Catholic High School – living our faith through selfless acts of kindness, shared excitement, support during challenging times, and service to one another. These priceless moments cannot be measured in dollars and percentages, however truly provide the greatest return on investment. Goodness permeates the hallways as our students are challenged to discover who they are by faculty who give them a safe place to go on that journey. On behalf of the administration of Paul VI Catholic High School and the School Board, thank you. As we celebrate 35 years of accomplishments, we do so with gratefulness for those who help us make it all happen. We do so knowing the future is bright. Thank you for being a part of this important time in the lives of our students.

Kate (Grimm) Andreottola ‘94 Director of Advancement

Vive Jesu Society The V+J, Vive Jesu, translates to “Live Jesus.” This is the motto of Saint Francis de Sales, the patron saint of Paul VI Catholic High School. The Vive Jesu Society enriches the lives of Paul VI students, faculty, and staff through their gifts of $1,000 or more during the fiscal year (July 1 – June 30). Paul VI Catholic High School is grateful for the generosity and loyalty of the Vive Jesu Society, allowing the school to continue to teach students how to live Jesus.

The school’s namesake, Pope Paul VI said, “Nothing makes one feel so strong as a call for help.” Members of Pope Paul VI create change. Their generosity enables the high school to achieve its mission, to graduate responsible, moral, service-oriented young adults. Because of Pope Paul VI members, faculty/staff, students, and alumni are prepared to respond to calls for help through leadership and a commitment to acting with integrity.

“Be who you are and be that well.” The words of Saint Francis de Sales grace the walls of the classrooms at Paul VI and the memories of the alumni. Gifts at the Saint Francis de Sales level give students the tools to live as he did – loving God and loving their neighbor. The impact of these gifts are felt far and wide, beyond the walls of Paul VI.

“Grow in grace and wisdom,” the philosophy of the school, is found in the prayer of the apostle Paul in his letter to the Philippians. The kindness of Grace and Wisdom members ensures that this philosophy is rooted in the teachings at Paul VI and in the actions of our students as they prepare academically and socially to confidently lead.

Saint Jane de Chantal, founder of the Congregation of the Visitation, received spiritual guidance from Saint Francis de Sales. An advocate for women in ministry and often facing adversity, Saint Jane de Chantal truly lived her mission. Donors at the Saint Jane de Chantal level help Paul VI students build the skills needed to identify and live their personal mission and advocate for others.

Strong leadership is possible because of the circles of support – alumni, families, and friends – who invest in the academic and spiritual vision of Paul VI. Generous donors of the Principal’s Circle celebrate the Paul VI legacy, provide for the present, and create opportunities for the future.

Pride in who you are as an individual and community; values that embody the teachings of the church; integrity to lead with character and as a responsible member of society – each of these is the core of a Paul VI education. The support of friends of Pride, Values, and Integrity ensures PVI students achieve spiritual, intellectual, personal, social, and physical development according to the teachings of the Gospel and St. Francis de Sales.

Be kind to one another. Be not afraid. Be who you are and be that perfectly well. 30

“We are grateful that PVI has continued and expanded the educational opportunities for students with intellectual disabilities and will continue at the new campus. We are also delighted that so many people have been generous to the scholarship,” shares Stephanie. “Throughout her life, Laura was a pioneer. She participated in advocacy at the local, state and federal levels. She was able to raise awareness, open minds and open doors. Laura’s legacy is having the courage to try new and difficult things.” The first recipient of the Laura Jean Elizabeth Lee Memorial

He is developing a love for learning and attending school, and gaining a respect for teachers and the administration. And it is all wrapped in the Love and mercy of God. We definitely see God’s presence in this school.”

The Bolils also value PVI’s spirited and supportive environment. “There is so much passion and support for the students here. The sound of the crowd cheering for the students in the exhibition game during the PVI/DJO basketball game was simply incredible. The esteem our kids experience at Paul VI is not often what they experience in typical society.” The Laura Lee scholarship has helped the Bolils send Wes to Paul VI, especially during a tough time for their family. “After Wes’s first year, we began plans on finding a place closer to live that would reduce the commute from Warrenton to Fairfax. Soon after, I was diagnosed with a Lymphoma of the brain. Since my battle with cancer, I have been on disability and finances have been tight. The Laura Lee scholarship has made it easier for Wes to attend PVI. The scholarship has been a blessing. It is an honor to be the first recipients.” Gifts can be made to the Laura Jean Elizabeth Lee Memorial Options Scholarship via check or online at www.paulvi.net/give.
