President’s Message President’s Message I would like to welcome everyone to our first live exhibition since the COVID pandemic altered the way we could handle our other shows last year. This is the 121st Philadelphia Water Color Society Anniversary Exhibition of Works on Paper held at the Duke Gallery of the Community Arts Center (CAC) in Wallingford, Pennsylvania. A very appreciative thank you to Paul Downie and his staff at the CAC for all the help they provided in making this year’s exhibition a success. Our Jurors had an arduous task this year with 410 pieces submitted from 28 states, 9 international, and British Columbia and Quebec. In the end, a total of 85 were selected for this year’s exhibition. Our Juror of Selection this year was Ray Balkwill, a well-known British landscape artist, who paints in all media. Our Juror of Awards, Mary Whyte, is an American figurative artist known internationally for her watercolors of contemporary people. A brief biography of each of the jurors are included in the catalog. I want to thank them for their time and effort in handling this challenging task. In addition, Mary provided a well-attended two-day workshop focusing on model observations and painting. Each year the show has a gallery talk given by a local artist or art professional. This year the talk was given by Fred Danziger who is a local artist and instructor. His talk gave wonderful insights into the wide range of styles and media represented in this year’s show and highlighted the diversity the International Exhibition brings together. This year the show distributed over $10,000 in cash awards. It also welcomed 8 new Signature members to the Society. Signature membership is achieved by getting accepted into two shows and the artist has the privilege to use the initials PWCS after their signature on their paintings. And this year, we had two Crest Medal Award winners. Descriptions of this award can be found in the catalog. We extend our sincere congratulations to the new Signature members and Crest Medal winners. On behalf of the Philadelphia Water Color Society, I would also like to thank every artist who entered this year’s show. Their paintings highlighted the diversity of our International Exhibition of Works on Paper. The responsibility of putting together a major exhibition takes a dedicated team and show director. Al Richards, International Show Director, is exemplary in his dedication, organization, and handling of this year’s show. Without his skill set, PWCS would not have been able to have such a successful show this year. A huge thank you is extended to Al and his team for their work effort!

In addition, Board members worked tirelessly supporting the many months of preparation and hanging of this year’s show. Carrie Cheung, the newly elected Treasurer, validated our finances to ensure a healthy Society for the future. Donor correspondence was in safe hands with Jeanne Gunther. Our outgoing webmaster, Nishita Jain, ensured that the entry process worked smoothly. Lena Thynell, social media Director, made certain that e-blasts and other publicity were highlighted on various platforms. Special thanks go to Barbara March, recording secretary, Diane Keesee in charge of hospitality, Rick Kowalewski, Al’s counterpart with the online Members show, Judith Hummer, membership chair who made certain selected artists were listed correctly along with the signature members and crest medal awards, Jane McGovern, Historian, and Denise Vitollo, Workshop Chairperson. Thank you does not seem to be enough to show appreciation for all the hours and work each of them puts into making certain PWCS is a success each year. Thank you to two special individuals, Radhika Srinivas, out-going President and Madeleine Kelly, Vice President and creator of this lovely catalog. Without their continued assistance, the task of transitioning into the role of President of PWCS would have been extremely difficult. Our endowed awards program can only exist with generous donors. It allows PWCS to attract and reward distinguished artists. Your support enables us to offer several scholarships to deserving college students, who are majoring in art, in our area. In addition, the annual renewal of membership dues aids in the support of the production of this catalog. We are so thankful for everyone’s support enabling us to fulfill our mission to elevate works on paper and dignify its art in the world. As you all know, PWCS is a volunteer organization, and we ask our members to get involved! We have some vacancies in Board positions and we are always in need of people to help with our shows. I hope you enjoy looking through the catalog at the selected works for this year’s Exhibition. They represent some of the most skilled artists working on paper today highlighting a diversity of style and themes. Candace Naumowicz-Zacher President Philadelphia Water Color Society

In 1900 the Philadelphia Water Color Society was founded to offset the then common exhibition prejudice against watercolor. Chartered in 1922 as a corporation, it continued its mission of “furthering watercolor art” through varied exhibitions of elected members’ works. Today, our annual exhibitions continue to present the finest in watercolor art as well as other works on paper. Over the years these exhibitions have evolved into open and juried international events. A permanent collection of over 175 works has been developed and presented to the Philadelphia Museum of Art for proper custodianship. The Historical Society of Pennsylvania archives our 121 years of records. Today, over 500 international artists working in a broad variety of media on paper comprise the Philadelphia Water Color Society membership. We take great pleasure in continuing our rich artistic tradition by presenting this exhibition.

Juror of Selection RAY BALKWILL
Ray Balkwill, SWAc
Ray Balkwill is a well-known British landscape artist who paints in all media. He has been painting professionally for over three decades and has held many successful solo exhibitions, as well as shown in group exhibitions including the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, the Royal West of England Academy and the South West Academy of Fine & Applied Arts. Ray was elected an Academician in the South West Academy in 2006 and was a member of the St. Ives Society of Artists for over twenty years. He is the author of seven books and is a regular contributor to art magazines. He also tutors painting courses and has made two art instruction films with APV Films. Ray is a strong advocate of painting en Plein air, with his main objective being to capture the mood and ‘spirit’ of a place. Living on the coast it is little wonder that the wide-open spaces of sea, estuary and sky have been the mainspring of his art. www.raybalkwill.co.uk 6
