The women helped each other by dressing up in costumes and posing for each other’ paintings. When one had a success, they all would celebrate each other’s good fortune. Elizabeth Shippen Green got assignments to illustrate for The Saturday Evening Post. Oakley did illustration work for several magazines but became known for her large murals in the Pennsylvania State Capitol building. Jessie Wilcox Smith became a famous children's book illustrator, renowned for her empathetic paintings of moth-
The women got along so well that they decided to move in together and share an apartment and art studio in the Red Rose Inn in Villanova, Pennsylvania. The female artists got their nickname, the Red Rose Girls, from Pyle who taught them illustration. He felt they were exemplars of the artistic style of Romantic realism.
LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT
The Red Rose Girls, Philadelphia 1863 1935 From left Violet Oakley, Jesse Wilcox Smith, and Elizabeth Shippen Green with Henrietta Cozens.
You might be asking why would PWCS rename an award at the prestigious International Exhibition after three women from Philadelphia? Well, back in 1897, these three female artists challenged the state of the male dominated American illustration world. The women were Violet Oakley, Jesse Willcox Smith and Elizabeth Shippen Green who also were some of the first females to become members of the Philadelphia Water Color Society.
The story of these women taking classes from Howard Pyle, who was considered the Father of American illustration, serves as a tribute to the perseverance and talent these 3 young women possessed. At this time in American history, women were prohibited from taking drawing classes and were not admitted to the better art schools. However, Pyle allowed them into his art class where they became friends. Pyle felt these three women represented some of the best works in his class and he used his influence to help them get their first illustrating jobs for magazines.

This demonstration will exhibit how Laurie pours a painting. Most watercolorists pour from light to dark, while she finds it easier and more vibrant to pour from dark to light. No masking on any painted surface, therefore, no faded look when masking is removed. This faded look was the trouble Laurie had when she started pouring using conventional techniques. This demonstration will give you the confidence to start pouring paintings which really enhances the beauty of watercolor.
In this workshop, the class will work with color and value to create 3 dimensional looking works of art featuring glass still life. Learn to use your eye to pick up on reflection, refraction and distortion of glass and the objects around the glass. A sketch and reference photo for anyone who would like to use it to learn these techniques will be provided or you can create your own still life with glass objects in it yourself. A few weeks before the workshop you will be able to transfer this photo image to your watercolor paper. This workshop will build your confidence to add glass into your artwork, whether it be a glass vase or glass windows on a storefront. This is a fun course as we discover the beauty of glass in watercolor.

David was born in China and raised in Hong Kong and New York City. To learn more about David’s work visit his website: www.davidleefineart.com
David Lee is an award winning watercolor impressionist who paints landscape and figure, his style is loose, bold and spontaneous. David’s goal is to capture a moment in time that may invoke feeling and interest from viewers. He paints atmosphere, light and the moment, not subjects. David pursued photography as a hobby for two decades while earning his living in insurance management business. When he retired in 2002, he got back to painting with a vengeance, amassing over 50 awards. David’s paintings have been shown in prestigious institutions such as Allentown Art Museum, Bethlehem City Hall, Banana Factory, Lehigh University, Thunderbird Foundation Fine Art Gallery, through groups shows as well as solo shows. The knowledge gained in his life time is all presented in each of his paintings. Years of practice and experiment have allowed him to produce work that is lacking great detail but still retains enough representational imagery for the viewer to connect the dots. David’s goal is to capture a moment in time that may invoke feelings and interest from viewers. He thinks that an artist should strive to show what he sees is worthwhile and important.

that artistic experiences were all about feeling, and different colors affecting mood. He thought that yellow could disturb and perhaps he heard trumpets when he looked at yellow. He said Blue might make people feel good. Apparently he heard a calming organ when he saw blue. I think I would feel calm, too! And when he saw red there was the sound of restless violins. My inclination would be to wander away from red.

In the painting “Color Study. Squares with Concentric Circles” 1903 ( left) he has incorporated all those colors. It would a interesting to actually hear what he heard, while a symphony of colors but to Kandinsky, it might also be a musical symphony.
Lois Ward Wolford NWS, PWCS, BWS She has been awarded the Maurice Prendergast Award in the 2022 TWS 46th Annual National Exhibition for her painting," Morning Routine”.
How does Kandinsky expect us to view each square as an individual piece or united as one? Should we look at each square individually or as a large whole piece? It’s realy up to the viewer to decide the kind of experience they want to have with the painting.

As I look at this painting, the upper left hand square begins with a base of gray. As we continue viewing, do you hear the trumpets blaring with that large swatch of yellow , the violins squeaking with the red circle and finally coming to a center of calm with the blue? I feel more relaxed.

Dennis Murphy (Director of Technology) Dennis moved to the Philadelphia area in the 1980s to work in the life sciences while finding time to do sculpture. Intrigued by the possibilities of the then new fangled computers, he ventured into developing interactive kiosks and videos for museums and traveling exhibits, but eventually settled into making websites. Recently retired from trying to make money, he has returned to making sculpture, developing his drawings and paintings. He’s relatively new to watercolor, spending way too much time fending off disasters while trying to control water in his brushes and being intimidated by expanses of blank paper.
Michael Adams (1st Vice President) Michael has been a working illustrator and designer for over 45 years, and a fine art watercolorist for over 30 years. He has been involved in numerous art programs and activities in the Philadelphia area during that time. He has taught Watercolor Materials and Techniques at The University of the Arts, The Greater Norristown Art League, and The Art Center in Ambler. His goal as a member of the PWCS board is to support our membership and enthusiastically promote the creative process to achieve excellence in our artwork.
Linda Cowles (Graphic Designer) Linda Cowles holds a BA in Art Practice with an emphasis on printmaking from Michigan State University as well as a JD degree from Thomas Cooley Law School. Although she taught Graphic Design and Technology in the Advertising Department at MSU for many years drawing and painting were only sporadic pastimes for her. After retirement, she began to pursue her passion for fine art more seriously. She describes herself as primarily an abstract mixed media artist but also dabbles from time to time in digital art. She is a signature member of PWCS, ISEA, and until it disbanded earlier this year, AP USA.
Barbara March (2nd Vice President) Barbara March is an artist from Marlton New Jersey, where she lives and maintains a studio. Watercolor is her preferred means of expression, and her paintings are mostly non objective, which reflect her passion for color and design. Mainly, self taught, her dramatic and captivating paintings have been acquired by corporate and private collectors. Artist, teacher, consultant and former President of the Garden State Watercolor Society, Barbara’s artwork has been exhibited in numerous juried exhibitions both locally and nationally, and she has been acknowledged and honored with extensive awards. She is a Signature Member in the Philadelphia Watercolor Society, the Pennsylvania WaterSociety, color the Baltimore Watercolor Society, the New Jersey Watercolor Society, and the Garden State Watercolor Society, where she currently serves on the Board as Historian. Barbara is already serving on the board as Recording Secretary.
Sherry Shay (Director of Workshops) A lifelong resident of the Philadelphia area, Sherry started her career as a graphic designer and learned digital and traditional watercolor illustration along the way. Currently she sells illustrations and paintings online and in several beach stores in New Jersey. Going “down the shore” is a cherished place to find inspiration for paintings since some of her favorite subjects include sea life, flowers, and nature. Sherry hopes to bring the technical and business knowledge she has learned during her career, and in her own business, to help continue the opportunities that the watercolor society provides.
Terry Freemark (Co Director of International Exhibition) Terry Freemark started watercolor painting in 2010. She began going through old family photos and found real comfort in bringing some of those old images alive through art. Rendering portraits remains her first love. She is a signature member of PWCS. Terry worked as a nurse her entire adult life, and as a nurse anesthesiologist for the last 27 of those years. She is recently retired and enjoys being able to devote more time to painting. She also loves reading, travel, and cooking. She is happy to have the opportunity to “give back” to PWCS.
Page 14
Jeannette (Jan) Cardamone (Co Director of International Exhibition) MS, PhD She is honored to be considered for the position of Co Director of International Exhibition to assist in displaying exceptional works of art on paper as she finds every singular vision to be truly inspiring. She began painting in watercolor after retiring 5 years ago from the Federal government (USDA) after 22 years as Research Leader of Wool Research with patented and scholarly publications describing how to formulate products from wool keratin while serving 6 years as Treasurer of the American Chemical Society’s Cellulose, Paper, and Textile Division. Previously, at the Ohio State University and Virginia Polytechnic and State University, during 9 years of academic teaching and research, and advised Graduate Students in the Textile Science of cellulose and wool fibers. She had been privileged to join an international team of experts to view, study, and advise on the conservation and preservation of the Star Spangled Banner and the Shroud of Turin. Weaving and natural dyeing, cultivated after graduate school and during the hiatus of raising three children, instilled in her the love of fiber and coloration and now she attributes the origin of her love for applying color to that precious time.

Beth A. James (Director of Plein air Events) - Business Management and Accounting along with my current Paralegal career have led me to appreciate the focus of watercolor painting to ease the day to day tension. That said my mother was a fine artist and earned the Edwin B. Kelly, Jr. medal and scholarship to Art School in 1934. She was an inspiration to me. I started Watercolor painting in 2002 at Darlington Art Center under Josephine Tsai and was hooked. The various art groups at Longwood Gardens, Community Art Center, Delaware Art Museum, Philadelphia Urban sketchers and The Brandywine River Museum painters at the Kuerner’s Farm, Chadds Ford, PA have fueled my passion to paint everything. Sharing ideas and various approaches to composition and painting the same subject make painting fun for me. I appreciate strong creative critiques of my work. Currently, I am working on a series in Media, PA in addition to sunrises and sunsets. Renoir along with a myriad of other masters and all my fellow artists continue to fascinate me. I hope to create a community of interactive artists by planning Plein Air events for the Philadelphia Watercolor Society.
Carina “Jinky” Rayo (International Liaison) Carina Rayo is better known as Jinky Rayo in the art community. She is an International Watercolor artist from the Philippines, self taught and has been painting since 2012. Her works are an array of landscapes in unusual perspective and lush hues and still life works brimming with multi colored medley of floral and ornamental objects that reflects her Filipino roots. She has learned to manipulate watercolor to express whatever her willing hands and heart dictate in any given moment. She is so happy and honored to be a part of PWCS and wishes to contribute to its long standing efforts in promoting watercolor around the world especially in a social media prolific era.
