Will I be stuck with the pet if it isn’t adopted? No. First, we have been very successful in finding homes for all our animals. But if the adoption takes longer than expected or wanted, we will move the pet to another foster home. We are a no-kill organization.

2.

Isn’t it too hard to let go of the pet? While it’s always difficult to say goodbye to a friend, it is much easier if you are happy with the pet’s new home. KAAP involves you in the adoption process, and you feel good about your foster pet’s future.

3.

Won’t it tie me down from traveling? No. Just give KAAP your schedule, and we will make it fit with our foster pets’ needs. We are looking for weekend-only and short-term foster homes as well, to help fill these gaps.

4.

What will it cost me? Only your precious non-renewable resource – your time. KAAP provides all the supplies for the pet. Anything you wish to donate will receive a tax receipt, as we are a registered charity.

5.

What qualifications do I need? A big heart, a home (or permission from your landlord to foster pets), a love and patience for animals, and time to spend with them. Let us know if you have any special skills or experience with animals, their training, or medical care.

6.

What if I need help? You always have a KAAP volunteer to call and discuss any concerns.

Help KAAP Win $25K For Community Pets Vote for KAAP (Kootenay Animal Assistance Program Society) in the “Pepsi Refresh Canada Project,� and bring $25,000 into our community for animal care. KAAP is doing really well so far; we jumped from #63 to #1 at the beginning of the contest, and have held that spot to date. But the competition is huge, and we must increase our voting base to stay at the top. We are asking for $25,000 to help reduce pet overpopulation, through spay/neuter of 150 pets, and provide necessary medical care to another 50 pets from disadvantaged situations. This initiative will support the other shelters in the area by reducing the number of unwanted pets and helping to take the load off the already full shelters. Update On St. Andrew’s Heritage Resource Centre The activities running at St. Andrew’s United Church in Kaslo, have expanded since they have taken on the mandate of being a Heritage Community Resource Centre. A good working arrangement has been developed with the Food Hub tenant in the lower level of the building, and the co-ordinator there is now handling all bookings for the facility. Contact can be made by phone at 250 353-7120, when the Food Hub is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10-1 or by email at ucbookings@nklcss. org anytime. The management of the facility is handled by an advisory committee, a maintenance committee, with the Food Hub co-ordinator doing the bookings. There are several groups using Heritage hall on a regular weekly basis, and other groups booking for specific events. The ongoing financial obligations of maintaining the building are dependent on the donations received for the use of the hall. A current Tuesday and Friday activity is the “Seniors Keeping Connected� exercise group which meets at 9:30 am for an hour of guided physio prepared exercises. No fee to join this. The acoustics in the sanctuary are excellent, so the Concert Society holds its events there. The next concert is a Clarinet and String Quartet on February 11, 7:30 pm. The winter service schedule is the 2nd Sunday of the month at 10 am for the Sacred Circle informal worship, and on the 4th Sunday, Quiet worship at 7pm.

Kaslo Christmas Hampers Christmas time can be especially difficult for people emotionally as well as financially. The pressure to make sure you not only have a nice dinner Christmas Day, but to also have presents for the family can be an added stress for many. Here we are in our special part of the world called, “Kaslo.” We are fortunate to live in a community that really cares about its neighbours. How do I know this? Because of what happened in the community over the holiday season. Local stores like Sunnyside Naturals, Front Street Market and Fern’s Flowers made space for the collection of non-perishable food items and gifts. The Kaslo Hotel put up a mitten tree to be collected for Christmas hampers. Kim Scott of Homelinks and Julie Avis of CBAL made the special treat of receiving new or nearly new books a reality for families. Barren’s Sport Shop offered a free movie rental for some. The Salvation Army worked diligently to assemble food and gifts for our community families and several others as well. Andy Shadrack, working with RDCK, made sure finances were provided so items could be purchased for the hampers. Lakeside Learning Centre students fought the cold weather and diligently solicited donations for both the Christmas hampers and ongoing efforts of the Food Cupboard. JV Humphries students, parents and teachers solicited donations at the annual Christmas concert. North Kootenay Lake Community Services Society board members, JV Humphries students, and volunteers of the Food Hub assembled all 30 hampers. Staff of North Kootenay Lake Community Services Society took applications for people requiring hampers. A huge amount of good community effort by all these groups and private donations made Christmas a special time this year. We are truly blessed! PAGE 36

This 40 year old festival, the largest jazz festival in North America, is an exciting educational event for Mt. Sentinel Stage Band students. Band students have been attending for at least 17 years! Jumbo Update Winter 2011 Recently Psyche Brown, manager of major resort projects for the Southern Interior of BC, told me her office has provided all the requested information to Victoria, and she has no information about timing of any potential decision for the Master Development Agreement (MDA) for the proposed Jumbo Glacier Resort and real estate development. Before the holidays a delegation from the Ktunaxa (Kootenay) Nation traveled to Victoria to deliver the Qat’muk (Jumbo Valley) Declaration in which they called for the government of BC to reject the proposed Jumbo Glacier Resort. “The Qat’muk Declaration is a clear expression of Ktunaxa interest in the Jumbo-Toby Creek Watershed,” said Kathryn Teneese, Ktunaxa National Chair. “The Qat’muk (GOT MOOK) is the home of the Grizzly Bear Spirit and is the unique and proper place to honour this spirit,” stated the Declaration.

Chinese New Year in Nelson looks set to be an explosive experience for all who wish to ring in the ‘Year of the Rabbit’ with a bang! Although fireworks won’t be on the agenda, Master Pauline Bao and students of Nelson’s Bao Academy of Tai Chi and Kung Fu have planned a dynamic Chinese New Year celebration at the Capitol Theatre on Friday, February 4. “Chinese New Year is the most important festival in China,� says Master Bao, who moved to Nelson from China in early 2010. “Nelson has been so welcoming to me and my family. This Chinese New Year celebration is my way of saying thank you, and of sharing a little of my culture with my new home.� Capitol attendees can expect a night of action-packed Kung Fu performances, along with graceful and flowing Tai Chi and Qi Gong displays...all to the sounds of traditional Chinese music. The schedule for this fun-filled family evening includes Tiger, Sword, Knife, Staff and Spear Kung Fu performances by Master Bao’s 5 to 11 year old students, as well as Hand, Sword and Fan Tai Chi performances by Master Bao’s adult classes. Master Bao herself, a 7th generation Shao Lin master, will also be taking the stage, performing ‘Sword’ and ‘Double Knife’ Shao Lin Kung Fu. Also featured prominently in the evening will be Master Bao’s six year old son, George. “My students have been working very hard to put on a good show for the community,� says Master Bao. “I’m very proud of them all, and looking forward to a really fun night of celebration in true Chinese New Year fashion.� All children will receive a special Chinese New Year’s gift at the door, and fun prizes will be handed out throughout the evening. Tickets for the February 4 event are $4/child, $6/student or senior, $8/adult and $17/family of four. Doors to the theatre open at 6 pm. Performances will run from 7 pm to 9 pm. Born in Vancouver, BC, John was raised in Arrowhead and moved to Revelstoke in 1967. Here he and his wife, Carol, raised their three children, Charlene, Duane and Leah, before moving to Kaslo in 1979. John’s connection to the logging industry began in 1953 and continued on in to the late 1980s, at which time he began his career with the Department of Highways. John officially retired in 2006, but continued to operate grader seasonally for CJ Logging until this past summer when his symptoms became evident and he was unable to continue. Many of John’s fondest memories and stories were of the adventures and the people he encountered throughout his many years of work. As well as being a hard worker, John was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. John was pre-deceased by his mother Mabel, his father Eric, and his sister Christina. He is survived by his wife Carol ~Nicky~; his three children Charlene (Julian, Lydia), Duane (Vicki, Sarah, Thomas, Willow, Lyleah), Leah (Darin, Mitchell, Hayley, Jaylyn), and his brother Melvin. At John’s request, there will not be a service. A donation to the ALS Society (www.als.ca), in lieu of flowers, would be greatly appreciated.

The APC has the responsibility to keep the lines of communication open between the people and the RDCK Board. Now that an Area D OfďŹ cial Community Plan is in place, the advisory group will be addressing land use issues as they relate to development permits, variance applications, growth strategies, and community planning. The APC acts in an advisory capacity only with decision making being the responsibility of the RDCK. The APC meets on the third Tuesday of each month. Meetings are open to everyone. Check our monthly submission to Pennywise for time and place. The next meeting is February 15 at 1:00 pm at the United Church Hall in Kaslo.
