The Month of Self — Self-Care, Self-Defense, Self-Confidence
This month, amidst the hustle and bustle of back-to-school season, take time to pause, care for, and appreciate the skin you’re in. From dermatology appointments to properly applying sunscreen, our feature walks you through the ways to care for the outermost organ that protects you each day. Looking for a little cosmetic boost? Check out our Destinations piece for information on medical spas, what services they offer, and where to go in Prince William. Perhaps it’s not your skin that’s in need of a little boost, but your home instead. This month’s Home and Hearth article shares DIY upgrades to amp up your home’s style and beauty. These simple projects will give your home fresh zest without requiring too much time or money. In On A High Note, we’re bringing you the story of The Castaways Repertory Theatre. This all-volunteer troop presents a variety of plays and includes people of all ages and abilities. And another group of volunteers over at Preservation Virginia are working hard to preserve historic sites. In our Giving Back section, read about their list of endangered sites and learn which Prince William site made this year’s list. Have you been looking for a way to feel more confident or to increase your overall fitness level? Self-defense classes are a great way to accomplish both! Check out Lifelong Learning for several options in our area. And while you’re carving out some time for a boost for yourself, don’t forget the kids. We’ve got some great tips for youth self-care in our Family Fun section. Your Finances is full of information to help you manage your investing in today’s volatile market. Tips from our financial advisor start on page 10. Are you in need of a new dinner spot? Local Flavor features Red House Tavern and their delicious farm-to-table, unique dishes. Their house-crafted cocktails and chef-created menu are making a name for the popular Haymarket gathering spot. Give it a try for your next date night or weekend brunch. And last but certainly not least, in our Health and Wellness column this month, we are honoring one of our own — Susan Bahorich. Susan brought so much to our community with her warmth and support of others. It was an honor to know and work with her, and her loss is widely felt.
All the best, Rebecca Barnes
