Affordable, unique and good for the environment, the upcycling and vintage trend is consistently on the rise, and it’s not hard to see why. Cornwall is a creative hub for upcycling old pieces of furniture, transforming driftwood into stunning pieces of furniture or jewellery and finding unique antiques. Madeleine Abbott went on the hunt for the best places for the thrifty to source preloved pieces that will add character and interest to your home and wardrobe.

Beach Life Cornwall was set up by Amanda Westlake in 2012 after redundancy pushed her to start her own business doing something she loved. “I have always enjoyed woodwork but needed to come up with an idea on how to make this hobby into a business. My aim was to produce driftwood products that were affordable to all, as I often heard that people loved driftwood products but found that the prices were too high.” From driftwood mirrors, to shell mosaics, driftwood Cornwall maps to photography, there is something for everyone.

he Leach Pottery’s summer exhibition gives a fascinating personal insight into the life and work of one of Britain’s most dynamic and highly influential potters. From mid-June the Leach Pottery presents a major exhibition of ceramics by Emmanuel Cooper OBE. Born in Derbyshire in 1938, Cooper spent his professional life in London and during a lengthy career devoted to the world of pottery he exerted a huge influence on the story of studio ceramics. This exhibition, entitled Emmanuel Cooper: Connections & Contrasts, is a fitting recognition of Cooper’s celebrated place in British ceramics and a timely return to the gallery, where he curated the very first exhibition at the newly re-opened Leach Pottery in 2008.
Set up earlier this year by Rich Inight, Jacques Cabin is a place offering an interesting and quirky alternative to massproduced furniture. Each piece is individually designed and hand built by Rich from salvaged scrap timber, in his workshop near Bude. Jane Pollock from Jacques Cabin explained: "Salvaged wood has an inherent character and quality that new timber cannot match. We leave in evidence of the timber’s Cornwall’s extends way previous use, torelationship show its historywith and clay add further appeal andbeyond just digging it up. On pageto67 tells readers ‘Red (the other clay)’, an exciting texture ourEsther designs,Dudley which has a clear coastalabout influence."

Known for his flamboyant personality, Cooper poured a great amount of energy into his love of pottery, both inside and outside of his London studio. A powerful advocate for contemporary craft, he was widely known as a writer, critic, teacher, curator, broadcaster and editor and is perhaps best known as the joint founder, in 1970, of Ceramic Review, a magazine which is still considered a cornerstone of the contemporary studio pottery scene. In the early 1960s he trained under Australian ceramicist Gwyn Hanssen Pigott and British potter Bryan Newman, and in 1965 established his first pottery in west London where he honed his skills making domestic tableware for an urban audience. In 1967, a speculative letter to Bernard Leach marked the beginning of an ongoing professional relationship between the two which turned full-circle years later with the publication of Cooper’s acclaimed biography ‘Bernard Leach: Life & Work’ in 2003. He also published important books on both Janet and David Leach, achievements which have made him a central figure in the Leach Pottery’s ongoing story. Bernard Leach’s ‘A Potter’s Book’ was a key influence on Cooper’s early practice, though he ultimately favoured a more metropolitan and Scandinavian aesthetic which focused on experimentation with glazes and surface decoration. His work is defined by his distinctive surfaces and glazes, sometimes textured, often colourful, but always reflecting the intensity and contrasts of the urban environment. His book ‘The Potters Book of Glaze Recipes’ was a best-seller amongst the 28 he wrote during his lifetime, which also included his ‘Handbook of Pottery’,

illions of television viewers in both the UK (BBC) and USA (PBS) are currently engrossed in the latest adaptation of Poldark, the tale of class, smuggling and love in Cornwall, based on the novels of the late Winston Graham. The series is a feast for the eyes and we don't just mean the main characters, as charming as they are, it's the Cornish landscape that's really grabbing the attention of viewers. Some say that the spectacular series will do more for Cornish tourism than any amount of Caroline Quentin fronted programmes (sorry Caroline). It's not just the viewers who have fallen for the beautiful landscapes, the cast and crew have also taken Cornwall to their hearts as myCornwall found out. unnek warn ugens 31
