Primary Times Back to School 2016

Hanley Castle High School is one of the most successful schools in Great Britain. Founded in 1326, the school has a long history of academic excellence. However, 2016 has been its most successful year ever and Hanley Castle is enjoying its status as one of the top 100 non-selective state-funded schools in England. GCSE results show that Hanley Castle students are exceptionally high achievers. Around 30% of all GCSE grades are awarded at either A or A* grade. The school’s Humanities Faculty is ranked within the top 1% of schools nationally, while Science is ranked within the top 30%. The percentage of students achieving the prestigious English Baccalaureate is 46% - almost twice the national average. Of course exam results are important, but there are other areas of a school’s performance which matter just as much. The success of the school means that it is able to continue to offer a broad range of subjects – both to younger pupils and

to the growing number of sixth form students from across Worcestershire who choose Hanley Castle for their post-16 studies. As well as an academic core including English, Mathematics, History and the Sciences, the school offers a rich wider curriculum which challenges and supports the talents of individual students in music, drama and sport. The school’s well-rounded, high-achieving students are much sought after by top universities, and the school sends large numbers of students to Oxford, Cambridge and Russell Group universities. However, the success of Hanley Castle students in gaining places is matched by their high performance once their studies have commenced. In 2016 a large number of our students graduated with First Class Honours degrees from universities including Oxford, Durham and Nottingham. Hanley Castle High School is one of

the oldest schools in England, with a unique blend of traditional values and cutting-edge teaching and facilities. New for September 2016 is a magnificent Sixth Form Centre which complements brand new Science laboratories and an upgraded IT infrastructure. Hanley Castle was last visited by Ofsted in May 2013. The report highlighted a number of key strengths including: • Excellent exam results; • The very high quality of teaching; • Outstanding arrangements to support students making the transition from primary school; • The strength of leadership of the sixth form, rising results and the increased numbers of students continuing their studies at top universities including Oxford and Cambridge; • The exceptionally positive attitudes to learning across the school. n

Our parents receive regular and detailed progress updates as we look to prepare our students in Years 7-9 for the rigours of linear examinations that they will face higher up the school.

We are very aware of the importance of the decision about which secondary school to choose and would welcome you to take a closer look at what we can offer. Faye Higgings, trainee MFL teacher at South Bromsgrove High, tell us what it’s really like to be a School Direct trainee. What made you decide to train to be a teacher? I was lucky enough to have a really enthusiastic languages teacher when I was at secondary school. I wanted to pass on the love of languages that she gave me. Why did you choose South Bromsgrove for your placement? I looked on the website and checked out the Ofsted report and the school looked fabulous. Everyone that I met on that day was friendly and informative, I couldn’t ask for a better place to do my training.

22

Primary Times Back to School 2016

What does an average day involve? I start the day with the form group I share, checking that they have arrived at school safely and giving out notices. The rest of the day flies by, as I am either teaching a lesson, planning a lesson, or helping pupils with any problems they may have. What part of the training has had most impact on you? This will sound cheesy, but I’ll say it anyway, it has to be the pupils. That’s what teaching is all about. The planning and evaluating can be a pain, but when I am in the classroom, that’s when I know I have made the right decision to go into teaching. What would you tell someone who is thinking about training to be a teacher? Do it! If you want to keep on top of everything, you may have to cut down on your social life a bit, but this will keep you sane! It’s important to have at least one day off a week where you have a complete rest, but it’s all worth it! n

Students and staff at Tenbury High Ormiston Academy are celebrating today after 72% of students achieved A*- C grades in English and maths. Students smashed previous school records with 78% of students achieving these top grades in maths and 75% achieving them in English. This year’s results are a just reward for the hard work of students and staff. The academy is delighted that so many pupils achieved so highly given the increasing rigour and challenge required to achieve this high standard in literacy and numeracy. Overall the academy’s results place Tenbury High well above national averages and reflect a continuing trend of excellence. A record 71% of all pupils achieved 5 GCSEs at A*- C including English and Maths, representing a 5% point increase from the previous year. Over one third of all pupils achieved the gold star standard of the EBacc and just under one third of all grades were either A* or A. We are also delighted that our student leaders, who are a credit to the academy, achieved so highly. Head Boy Rory Huntbach achieved three A*s, four As and two B grades and Head Girl Kitty Houchin achieved one A, one B and six C grades. Deputy

Head Boy Dan Pye achieved six As, three Bs and one C grade and Deputy head Girl Rosie Liddell achieved six A*s and four A grades. Other individual success stories include: • Lauren Franklin who achieved an incredible nine A*s and three A grades (including an A* in Additional Maths) • Kit Garbutt who achieved one A*, six As and three B grades • Ellie Griffiths who achieved seven A*s and two A grades • Sophie Griffiths who achieved two A*s, seven As and one B grade • Cate Hollis achieved one A*, four As and four B grades • Issy Kite achieved five A*s and four A grades • Charlotte Stone achieved five A*s, five As and one B grade There are also many reasons to celebrate the achievement of students who have overcome adversity to achieve highly. Two of our year 11s suffered tragic family bereavements very close to the exams and went to achieve extremely highly, one achieved two As, six Bs and one C grade and the other pupil achieved two A*s, seven As and one B grade. Given the very difficult circumstances, these results are a credit to those pupils and the support of their families and our staff. n

The King’s School, Worcester has one of the finest settings of any city school in the country. It borders the River Severn in the heart of Worcester and looks across to the Malvern Hills. Located adjacent to the Cathedral in an oasis of calm, away from the sound and sight of traffic, and yet two minutes’ walk from the pedestrianised city centre, the school is within easy walking distance of train and bus stations. The senior school aims to provide an exceptional experience looking after both the educational and pastoral needs of each individual child, aiming to help all pupils to achieve their best academically and instilling confidence in a changing world. Excellent recent exam successes have once again placed King’s at the top of the local league tables. At A level the pass rate was 99.6% and 47.4% of A levels were at A* or A grade. At GCSE the pass rate was 100% of pupils

26

who achieved five GCSEs graded A*- C including English and Mathematics. A record 42% of GCSEs were at A* grade. Sport and Music both play important roles in school life. Sporting facilities are excellent and include a swimming pool, boat house and a recently opened sports and performing arts centre. The school boasts three orchestras, three choirs, a wind band and other ensemble groups. This, in addition to our close connection with the Cathedral, ensures that musical pupils of all abilities have ample opportunities to exhibit their talents. A newly launched website: www.ksw.org.uk is well worth a look for some idea of the ‘King’s Experience. It is best, however, to visit us on one of our opening mornings to gain a fuller understanding of what King’s can offer your child.
